Monitoring soil quality index (SQI) and soil organic carbon (SOC) stock status of the Western Ghats (WG) forests in India is crucial for providing vital ecosystem services alongside sustainable forest management practices. However, comprehensive profile data on SQI and SOC stock across different forest types under WG forests are limited. The study evaluated SQI and SOC stock under three forest types, i.e. tropical wet evergreen (TWE), tropical semi-evergreen (TSE), and tropical moist deciduous (TMD) across WG in Karnataka. SQI was assessed using principal component analysis with two indexing approaches and scoring methodologies, with weightage indexing through nonlinear scoring functions (NLSF) showing superiority over other methodologies. TMD forests exhibited the highest SQI, followed by TWE and TSE, while the lowest was observed in Rippon Pet RF (0.36 surface, 0.28 control section), primarily due to limitations in organic carbon and clay content. SOC stock mirrored SQI trends (TMD > TWE > TSE), with the highest values in Kollegal RF (339.3 MG ha -1 ) and lowest in Rippon Pet RF (102.5 MG ha -1 ). Although SOC and SQI were established to be ideal indicators for dynamic ecosystem services (ESs), high OC content in surface soils of Poomale NF induces pedogenic acidification and Al toxicities, indicating potential forest soil degradation. Insects are emerging as a promising alternative source in animal nutrition, offering high protein content and a low environmental impression compared to traditional feed sources. This abstract explores the potential role of insects in reducing the environmental impact of livestock production. Insects such as black soldier fly larvae, mealworms, and crickets are rich in essential nutrients, including proteins, amino acids, fatty acids and so on. They can be efficiently farmed on organic waste streams, contributing to resource efficiency and waste lessening. Additionally, insect farming needs a small quantity of water, less land, and emits fewer greenhouse gases than conventional animal feed production. Despite these benefits, several challenges must be addressed to realize their potential, including regulatory approval, consumer acceptance, production scalability, and ensuring consistent nutritional quality. By overcoming these challenges through research, innovation, and policy support, insects can be integrated into mainstream animal feed systems, significantly reducing the environmental impact of livestock farming and contributing to a more sustainable agricultural future., (© 2024 Wiley‐VCH GmbH. Glycovesicles are ideal tools to delineate finer mechanisms of the interactions at the biological cell membranes. Multivalency forms the basis which, in turn, should surpass more than one mechanism in order to maintain multiple roles that the ligand-lectin interactions encounter. Ligand densities hold a prime control to attenuate the interactions. In the present study, mannose trisaccharide interacting with a cognate receptor, namely, Con A, is assessed at the vesicle surface. Synthetic (1→3)(1→6)-branched mannose trisaccharides tethered with a diacetylene monomer and glycovesicles of varying sugar densities were prepared. The polydiacetylene vesicles were prepared by maintaining uniform lipid concentrations. The interactions of the glycovesicles with the lectin were probed through dynamic light scattering and UV-Vis spectroscopy techniques. Binding efficacies were assessed by surface plasmon resonance. Aggregative and in-plane modes of interactions show ligand-density dependence at the vesicle surface. Vesicles with sparsely populated ligands engage lectin in an aggregative mode (trans-), leading to a cross-linked complex formation. Whereas glycovesicles embedded with dense ligands engage lectin interaction in an in-plane mode intramolecularly (cis-). The present study was conducted to assess the impacts of loose house roofing designs and materials on modulation of micro-climate of the cow shed and its influences on production and reproduction performance of lactating crossbred Jersey cows. The control group (T0) was kept in a traditional single-slope asbestos roof shed and treatment group (T1) at a specially designed open-ridge ventilated, double-slope thatch roof shed. Lactation stage, average daily milk yield, and average parity at the beginning of the experiment were kept similar between T0 and T1 cows. The specifically designed T1 shed had significantly (P < 0.05) lower temperature, humidity, and thermal humidity index as compared to the traditional shed (T0). The T1 shed was cooler and more comfortable than T0. Housing significantly (P < 0.05) influenced cardinal physiological parameters of resident cows. Body temperature, pulse rate, respiration rate, and discomfort index were significantly (P < 0.05) higher in T0 as compared to those in T1 cows. Improved housing significantly (P < 0.01) influenced milk yield, composition, quality, and udder health of cows. Daily milk yield depending on parity, monthly milk yield, milk fat, SNF, and protein were significantly (P < 0.01) higher in T1 than those in T0 cows. The milk somatic cell count, modified California mastitis test score, electrical conductivity, and pH of milk samples of T0 cows were significantly (P < 0.0) higher than those of T1. Effect of housing type, parity, and interaction of housing × parity did not cause any significant (P > 0.05) differences in reproductive traits such as service period, break period, calving interval, pregnancy rate, and other cow fertility parameters. Post-partum body condition score and body weight loss did not differ significantly (P > 0.05) between the two groups; however, more loss occurred in T0 than T1. The estimated net profit from housing of cows (N = 20) in a comfortable shed was 2200 kg milk per annum, i.e., 110 kg/cow/annum. The study concluded that a central open-ridge ventilated, double-slope thatched roof design created a favorable micro-environment and it significantly affected cows' comfort index; thermo-comfortable housing significantly reduced the heat stress-oriented drop in milk yield and decline in milk composition, and improved udder health and other milk production traits; however, its impact was non-significant on reproduction and fertility traits in Jersey crossbred cows.

Evapotranspiration (ET o ) is an important component of the hydrological cycle and reliable estimates of ET o are essential for assessing crop water requirements and irrigation management. Direct measurement of evapotranspiration is both costly and involves complex and intricate procedures. Hence, empirical models are commonly utilized to estimate ET o using accessible meteorological data. Given that empirical methods operate on various assumptions, it is essential to assess their performance to pinpoint the most suitable methods for ET o calculation based on the availability of input data and the specific climatic conditions of a region. This study aims to evaluate different empirical methods of ET o in the tropical highland Udhagamandalam region of Tamil Nadu, India, utilizing sixty years of meteorological data from 1960-2020. In this study, 8 temperature-based and 10 radiation-based empirical models are evaluated against ET o estimates derived from pan evaporation observation and the FAO Penman-Monteith method (FAO-PM), respectively. Statistical error metrics indicate that both temperature and radiation-based models perform better for the Udhagamandalam region. However, radiation-based models performed better than the temperature based models. This is possibly due to the high humidity of the study region throughout the year. The results suggest that simple temperature and radiation-based models using minimum meteorological information are adequate to estimate ET o and thus find potential application in agricultural water practices, hydrological processes, and irrigation management., (© 2024. This study evaluated the economic impacts caused by mastitis in a small dairy farm with similar characteristics and production to most dairy farms in southern Brazil and investigated if climatic variations influenced mastitis occurrence in the region. A farm with, on average, 45 lactating Holstein cattle was monitored from November 2021 to October 2022, and data on mastitis cases, bulk tank milk somatic cell count, animal treatment costs, milk production, animal disposal costs, and production losses were collected. Monthly averages of temperature, relative humidity (RH), and rainfall in the region were obtained. The greatest loss was related to the drop in milk production, resulting in 63.8% of total losses, followed by animal disposal (29.5%), milk disposal (4.6%), and treating animals with mastitis (2.0%), totaling a 10.6% reduction in the annual gross income. There were negative correlations between the clinical mastitis rate and monthly RH and between subclinical mastitis and temperature; the occurrence of subclinical mastitis and average RH were positively correlated. Forest soils serve as the greatest sink of terrestrial carbon (C) and have a significant impact on worldwide or regional C cycling. By reducing emissions and enhancing the C storage in forests, the environmental monitoring function of a forest ecosystem may be ensured. The study focused on measuring the densities of major nutrients in soil to gain insight into the C and nitrogen dynamics of the Himalayan sub-tropical forest ecosystem of India besides supplementing the information about the C storage potential of these forest soils. The study examined the physico-chemical properties and nutrient densities across three altitudinal ranges viz., 600-800 m (A 1 ), 800-1000 m (A 2 ) and 1000-1200 m (A 3 ) and two aspects, i.e. Northern (N) and Southern (S) in a randomized complete block design and data collection was done from 24 main sample plots (3 altitudinal ranges × 2 aspects × 4 replications). The soil pH, electrical conductivity, and bulk density observed a decreasing pattern with an increase in altitude, whereas a reverse trend was observed in soil organic C (SOC), total nitrogen and available phosphorus. The SOC and total nitrogen densities ranged from 20.08 to 48.35 Mg ha -1 and 2.56 to 4.01 Mg ha -1 , respectively in an increasing trend from A 1 to A 3 . The northern aspect exhibited significantly higher SOC and nitrogen densities than the southern aspects. The C storage potential of forest soils followed the order A 1 < A 2 < A 3 with significantly higher potential (nearly 1.5 times) compared to those on the southern aspect. There was a consistently significant increase in the C:N ratio (CNR) with a maximum value (10.51) at A 3 and minimum value (8.37) at A 1 , however the effect of aspect remained insignificant. This research underscores the importance of considering altitude and aspect when planning forest restoration efforts, as these factors have a substantial influence on soil properties, C storage potential and CNR. Understanding the significance of CNR is critical, as it serves as a key indicator of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from forest soils. The "carbohydrate chemical mimicry" exhibited by sp 2 -iminosugars has been utilized to develop practical syntheses for analogs of the branched high-mannose-type oligosaccharides (HMOs) Man 3 and Man 5 . In these compounds, the terminal nonreducing Man residues have been substituted with 5,6-oxomethylidenemannonojirimycin (OMJ) motifs. The resulting oligomannoside hemimimetic accurately reproduce the structure, configuration, and conformational behavior of the original mannooligosaccharides, as confirmed by NMR and computational techniques. Binding studies with mannose binding lectins, including concanavalin A, DC-SIGN, and langerin, by enzyme-linked lectin assay and surface plasmon resonance revealed significant variations in their ability to accommodate the OMJ unit in the mannose binding site. Intriguingly, OMJMan segments demonstrated "in line" heteromultivalent effects during binding to the three lectins. Similar to the mannobiose (Man 2 ) branches in HMOs, the binding modes involving the external or internal monosaccharide unit at the carbohydrate binding-domain exist in equilibrium, facilitating sliding and recapture processes. This equilibrium, which influences the multivalent binding of HMOs, can be finely modulated upon incorporation of the OMJ sp 2 -iminosugar caps. As a proof of concept, the affinity and selectivity towards DC-SIGN and langerin were adjustable by presenting the OMJMan epitope in platforms with diverse architectures and valencies., (© 2023 The Authors. The present investigation delineates groundwater potential zones (GPZ) in the Jhargram district through an integrated approach employing analytical hierarchical process (AHP), remote sensing, and geographical information systems (GIS). Twelve parameters were utilized for GPZ analysis based on the Groundwater Potential Index, subsequent to multicollinearity testing. Classification of GPZ yielded five distinct categories: very poor, poor, moderate, good, and very good. Validation through receiver operating characteristics (ROC) and cross-validation with borewell yield data affirmed prediction accuracies of 78.4% and 84%, respectively. Spatial distribution analysis revealed that 30.39%, 30.86%, and 13.19% of the surveyed area fell within the poor, moderate, and good potentiality zones, respectively, whereas 15.86% and 9.69% were categorized as very poor and very good GPZs. Sensitivity analysis highlighted the significance of geology, elevation, geomorphology, slope, and lineament density as influencing parameters; elimination of any single parameter engendered significant alterations in the GPZ classification. Understanding natural phenomena with the help of modern scientific approaches helps to reach sustainable solutions for current and future water-related problems. In this context, present study aims to assess relative influencing level of physical factors in controlling groundwater level, using a novel grid-based delineation technique, in Lower Palar River Basin, in Kanchipuram and Chengalpattu districts of South India. The influencing factors viz-a-viz: rainfall, soil texture, land use/land cover, terrain slope, geomorphology, lithology, and drainage characteristics were considered for the study. Archived data (2011 to 2020) of monthly rainfall at four rain gauge stations and monthly groundwater level of 22 locations, soil texture, lithology, and geomorphology data were considered for the study. SRTM digital elevation model with 30-m resolution was used for analyzing drainage characteristics and terrain slope. Thematic maps for considered factors were prepared, using common grid delineation method in GIS platform that divided study area into 52 grids, to inter-relate the discrete and continuous parameters with groundwater level. Results indicate that level of influence increases in the order of precipitation followed by lithology, land use/land cover, terrain slope, geomorphology, infiltration number, and soil texture. The study shows groundwater resilience is highly influenced by soil texture and infiltration number compared to other factors considered. It can be concluded that grid-based delineation successfully identifies grids with significant influence of individual factors by comparing with groundwater resilience. Common grid-based delineation method proves to be more effective in assessing groundwater resilience and can be used more efficiently in groundwater studies., (© 2023. Groundwater is a crucial natural resource for providing reliable and long-lasting water supplies across the globe. The integrated approach used in the current study involved the use of multiple techniques to assess groundwater potential zones (GWPZs) and identify suitable areas for artificial recharge sites. The methods used in the study were a combination of geographic information system (GIS), analytic hierarchy process (AHP), and fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (Fuzzy-AHP) to accomplish this goal. The study considered multiple thematic maps, such as drainage density, elevation, geomorphology, slope, curvature, topographic wetness index (TWI), geology, distance from the river, land use and land cover (LULC), and rainfall, to determine the GWPZs. AHP and Fuzzy-AHP were used to weight thematic maps based on their relative importance in controlling groundwater availability and recharge, and then a weighted overly analysis in a GIS environment was utilized to derive the final GWPZs map. After completing the weighting of thematic maps, both AHP and Fuzzy-AHP models categorized GWPZs into low, moderate, and high categories in the study area. In this study area, GWPZs were classified as poor, moderate, and high using both the AHP and Fuzzy-AHP models. According to the AHP model, 5.41% of the area's GWPZs were categorized as poor, 70.68% as moderate, and 23.91% as high. The Fuzzy-AHP model, on the other hand, categorized 4.92% as poor, 69.75% as moderate, and 25.33% as high. To validate these results, the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) and area under the curve (AUC) were used to explore the prediction accuracy, resulting in an accuracy rate of 70.1% for AHP and 71% for Fuzzy-AHP. These findings suggest that the Fuzzy-AHP model is effective in accurately identifying GWPZs in this area. Additionally, using remote sensing (RS) and GIS, the current study created a map by overlaying the lineament and drainage maps to determine suitable locations for artificial recharge. One-hundred-forty suitable locations for artificial recharge sites were identified based on Fuzzy-AHP. The study's reliable findings assist decision-makers and water users in the research area to use groundwater resources sustainably. Nanolobatone A, featuring an unprecedented tricyclo[10.3.0.0 1,2 ]pentadecane carbon skeleton, along with four new polyoxygenated and four unusual endoperoxide-bridged casbane-type diterpenoids were isolated from the Hainan soft coral Sinularia nanolobata. The structures of the new compounds were established by extensive spectroscopic analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis, and time-dependent density functional theory/electronic circular dichroism calculations. A plausible biosynthetic pathway of new isolates was proposed. Globally, floods as dynamic hydraulic hazard have caused widespread damages to both socioeconomic conditions and environment at various scales. Managing flood and management of water resource is a global challenge under the changing climatic condition. This study assessed flood susceptibility in the Bhagirathi sub-basin, India using entropy information theory and geospatial technology. Twelve flood susceptibility parameters such as land use/land cover, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), slope, elevation, geology, geomorphology, normalized difference water index (NDWI), soil, drainage density, average rainfall, maximum temperature, and humidity during monsoon season were utilized to examine flood susceptibility. Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve and Leave-One-Out Cross-Validation (LOOCV) techniques were carried out to validate flood susceptibility map. Kappa statistics was also used to check the reliability of the flood susceptibility model. Findings of the study revealed that nearly 45% area of the sub-basin was highly susceptible to flood followed by moderate (29.3%), very high (19%), low (6.9%), and very low (0.2%). These findings also revealed that nearly 92% area in the eastern, north-eastern, and deltaic sub-basin was susceptible to floods. ROC analysis indicated high success (0.932) and prediction (0.903) rates for the susceptibility map while LOOCV (R 2 being 0.97) and Kappa (k = 0.934) have shown substantial prediction of the model. Hence, the susceptibility maps are useful for the local planners and government organization in designing the early flood warning system, and reducing the human and economic losses. Natural and anthropogenic processes are primary drivers for soil degradations in the Gangetic plain of India. Indian Remote Sensing (IRS) data was used to assess soil degradations and study spatial changes comparing with the legacy datasets. Based on the nature, extent, and degrees of limitations, these soils were evaluated to suggest suitable reclamation and management options. Typical strong signature (white tones) from a barren highly salinized soil (P3, P6, P9, P11, and P15) and higher energy absorption (blue-black tones) from a permanent waterlogged surface (P13, P14, P10) in the irrigated areas have favored delineation of salt-affected, strong, and permanent waterlogged areas. Moderate and slightly salt-affected soils (P1, P2, P4, P5, P7, P8, and P12) and the areas with high water table depths (P13 and P14) have shown mixed spectral signatures for associations of soil, water, and crops and were mapped using ground truth and soil chemical analysis data. Irrigation with poor quality ground water (RSC: 1.2 to 12.3 me L -1 ) has prompted developing salinity and sodicity in P2, P5, and P11, while irrigation in poorly drained areas caused appearance of waterlogging (WTD < 1.5 m) and salinization (P3, P5, P7, P9, P13, P14). The gypsum application and sub-surface drainage (SSD) techniques have enhanced soil reclamation by (i) neutralizing CO 3 2  - and HCO 3  - in P12 (pH 9.2, ESP 24) and (ii) controlling soil salinity (EC 3.0 dS m -1 ) and waterlogging (WTD > 1.5 m) in P14. Soils with CaCO 3 layers at shallow depth in P3 (0.7-4.2%), P6 (1.2-7.1%), P9 (8-16%), P11 (4-15%), and P13 (0.9-9.4%) were managed using forest plantations. Ground water with high SAR in T1 to T7 can be applied for agriculture using mixing or cyclic mode. Water with high RSC in T4, T5, T7, T8, T9, and T10 needs treatment with gypsum. A significant area (~ 24.87%) of salt-affected soils was reclaimed since 1971. Prominent changes (3.27 to 17.71%) were shown in Panipat and Karnal districts. Cephalodiones A-D (1-4), the first example of C 19 -norditerpenoid dimers, were isolated and fully characterized from a Cephalotaxus plant. These new skeletal natural products shared a unique tricyclo[6.4.1.1 2,7 ]tetradeca-3,5,9,11-tetraene-13,14-dione core that was capped in both ends with rigid multicyclic ring systems either C 2 -symmetrically or asymmetrically. Compounds 1-4 were proposed to be biosynthetically produced by the [6+6]-cycloaddition of two identical C 19 -norditerpenoid troponoids, which was validated by the semisyntheses of dimers 2-4. The heavy metal pollution level in soils is heavily affected by the soil particle size distribution. However, the heavy metal loss during particle size extraction and the effect of calcite on the heavy metals removal in terms of the particle size are unclear. In this study, the distribution of heavy metals (Cu, Cd, Cr, Co, Ni, Zn, Pb, U, and V) was determined in five particle fractions (> 2, 2-0.25, 0.25-0.02, 0.02-0.002, and < 0.002 mm) of two soil and one sediment samples collected from the floodplain of Dongchuan, Yunnan Province, Southwest China. The sampled floodplain soils were mainly composed of gravel and sand fractions (> 97%). The concentrations of all nine heavy metals in the sampled soils and sediment increase significantly with decreasing particle sizes. The maximal loss rate of Cd and Cu reaches 54% and 8.6%, respectively, which should be considered in the process of particle size fraction extraction in soils. The removal amount and removal rate of heavy metals in solution by pure calcite ranks in the order of Pb 2+ > Cu 2+ > Cr 6+ , while the removal rate of Pb (93.13%) is much higher than that of Cu (24.56%) and Cr (10.71%), which increase with the calcite particle size decreasing. The stabilization of carbonate minerals in soils is crucial for heavy metal pollution control in floodplain soils with high carbonate concentrations in Dongchuan, China.
