This paper is focused on the issue of preparing the cutting edge microgeometry of cutting inserts made of cubic boron nitride (CBN). The aim of this research was to investigate the possibilities of rotary ultrasonic machining (RUM) for preparing asymmetric cutting edge microgeometries of various shapes (chamfers, circular, and elliptical rounding and their combinations) on a CBN cutting tool. In this article, a new type of advanced cutting edge preparation method is presented. CBN is relatively resistant to the most often used (abrasive) methods of cutting-edge preparation, due to its very high hardness (which is a prerequisite property for machining difficult-to-cut materials). Such hard materials could be processed using advanced manufacturing methods, and rotary ultrasonic machining (RUM) is one such method. Experiments have shown that RUM can be used for machining CBN. However, high hardness is not the only challenge here. For cutting edge preparation, it is necessary to achieve an adequate accuracy of size and dimensions. The presented paper analyzes the suitability of the RUM process for processing CBN inserts. The results of the experiment showed that this method can be used for preparing asymmetric cutting edge microgeometries with various shapes.

Polycrystalline cBN/copper composite abrasive particles were prepared by an electroless powder coating process. Ti metallization and tin/silver metallization techniques were used to improve the coating process by depositing an autocatalytic metallic layer on the surface of the cBN particles. Metallized, as well as un-metallized, cBN particles were further coated by copper using electroless deposition. Electroless copper coating of un-metallized and metallized cBN particles by 90 wt.% of copper were achieved. The surface morphology, the composition and the crystalline phase identifications of the metallized cBN particles, as well as the 10 wt.% cBN /copper composite powders, were investigated by field emission scanning electron microscopy, an energy-dispersive spectrometer and an X-ray diffractometer. The results show that the surface of the Ti metalized and tin/Ag-metallized cBN particles were covered by the nanosized Ti or Ag layer, respectively, which enhanced the deposition of the copper during the electroless deposition bath. The results also showed that the deposited layer on the metallized cBN particles was composed mainly of metallic copper. The produced 10 wt.% cBN/copper composite particles also underwent thermo-gravimetric analysis to investigate its stability at high temperature. It was revealed that the Ti-metallized cBN/copper composite powder has higher stability at 800 °C under the environmental conditions than the tin/silver-metallized and the un-metallized cBN/copper composite particles, respectively.

Owing to their extreme hardness, cubic boron nitride (cBN) composites are widely used in cutting applications. The performance of cBN composites is closely related to the characteristics of the binder. Therefore, novel binders must be developed to improve the performance of cBN composites. In the present work, TiAl intermetallics were used as binders to fabricate cBN composites by employing a high-temperature and high-pressure sintering method. The phase transformation, sintering reaction mechanism, thermal stability, and mechanical properties of the resultant cBN composites were investigated. It was found that during the sintering process, Ti atoms preferentially reacted with boron nitride particles, whereas Al atoms enriched and transformed into TiAl 3 phases and formed cBN/AlN, AlB 2 /TiN, and TiB 2 /TiAl 3 -layered structures eventually. The composites maintained good oxidation resistance at 1200 °C. A decrease in the particle size of the TiAl binder improved the uniformity of particle size distribution and increased the flexural strength of the composites.

Wear-resistant, super hard ceramic composites based on cubic boron nitride (cBN) are of great interest to industry. However, cBN is metastable under sintering conditions at normal pressure and converts into the soft hexagonal BN (hBN). Therefore, efforts are being made to avoid this process. Besides short sintering times, the use of coated cBN-particles is a way to minimize this process. Therefore, the thermal stability of TiN coated cBN powders in high purity argon and nitrogen atmospheres up to temperatures of 1600 °C was investigated by thermogravimetry, X-ray phase analysis, scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The TiN coating was prepared by the atomic layer deposition (ALD)-method. The investigations showed that the TiN layer reacts in Ar at T ≥ 1200 °C with the cBN and forms a porous TiB 2 layer. No reaction takes place in nitrogen up to temperatures of 1600 °C. Nevertheless, the 20 and 50 nm thin coatings also undergo a recrystallization process during heat treatment up to temperatures of 1600 °C.

Monolayer cubic boron (B) nitride (N) terminated diamond (111) surfaces are proposed and investigated using density functional theory. The carbon (C)-N-B-terminated diamond (111) surface with a monolayer coverage of hydrogen and the C-N-B-terminated diamond (111) surface with a monolayer coverage of fluorine [named C-N-B-F-terminated (111) surface] have positive electron affinities (PEAs) with no inter-band gap states and nearly perfect alignment of nitrogen vacancy (NV). Thus, they could potentially be applied in NV-based quantum sensors. The C-B-N-terminated diamond (111) surface with a monolayer coverage of hydrogen [named C-B-N-H-terminated (111) surface], which has negative EAs (NEAs) and an adsorption energy of -3.51 eV, could potentially be employed in electron emission devices. Specifically, C-N-B-F- and C-B-N-H-terminated diamond (111) surfaces have the largest PEA (4.48 eV) and NEA (-4.00 eV), respectively, of any reported diamond surfaces. We also propose a formalism to construct multiple dipole structures on diamond surfaces to yield extremely large EAs.

Cubic boron nitride (c-BN) is a "difficult-to-cut" material. High precision machining of this material is problematic because it is difficult to control the material removal rate and maintain acceptable accuracy. This paper describes an application of electrodischarge machining (EDM) for drilling micro holes in c-BN. The goal of this research was to determine a set of parameters and technical specifications for such a process. We used an isoenergetic transistor power supply with a microsecond voltage pulse generator and a tungsten tool electrode of diameter d = 381 μm. Each hole was drilled for 10 min. The holes did not exceed 410 μm in diameter and were at least 1000 μm deep. The process was carried out in a hydrocarbon dielectric liquid. We assess the quality of the holes from a qualitative and quantitative point of view. The results show that electrodischarge is a precise, accurate, and efficient method for machining c-BN., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest. In this study, the kraft lignin/cubic boron nitride hybrid materials have been obtained and characterized for the first time. The effectiveness of the combination of lignin and boron nitride was evaluated on the basis of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Furthermore, it was confirmed that the addition of cubic boron nitride (cBN) improved the thermal stability of the inorganic-organic material. Upswing in thermal properties allowed to apply the prepared materials in preparation of model abrasive composites. Beneficial influence of the lignin/cBN filler was also proven by a noticeable decrease in the amount of harmful phenol released from the compositions during headspace gas chromatography analysis. Mechanical properties of the lignin/boron nitride hybrids and resin systems were investigated by the three-point flexural test. The obtained results show that the used additives can be promising materials for abrasive tools combining the good properties of lignin as a plasticizer and of cubic boron nitride as a filler which improves the thermal and mechanical properties of finished products and, at the same time, limits the negative impact on human health and environment., (Copyright © 2018. Cubic boron nitride (c-BN) composites produced at high pressures and temperatures are widely used as cutting tool materials. The advent of new, effective pressure-assisted densification methods, such as spark plasma sintering (SPS), has stimulated attempts to produce these composites at low pressures. Under low-pressure conditions, however, transformation of c-BN to the soft hexagonal BN (h-BN) phase can occur, with a strong deterioration in hardness and wear. In the present work, the influence of secondary phases (B₂O₃, Si₃N₄, and oxide glasses) on the transformation of c-BN was studied in the temperature range between 1100 °C and 1575 °C. The different heat treated c-BN particles and c-BN composites were analyzed by SEM, X-ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy. The transformation mechanism was found to be kinetically controlled solution-diffusion-precipitation. Given a sufficiently low liquid phase viscosity, the transformation could be observed at temperatures as low as 1200 °C for the c-BN-glass composites. In contrast, no transformation was found at temperatures up to 1575 °C when no liquid oxide phase is present in the composite. The relative stability and melting of cubic boron nitride (c-BN) nanoparticles of varying shapes and sizes are studied using classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. Focusing on the melting of octahedral c-BN nanoparticles, which consist solely of the most stable {111} facets, decomposition is observed to occur during melting, along with the formation of phase segregated boron clusters inside the c-BN nanoparticles, concurrent with vaporization of surface nitrogen atoms. To assess this MD prediction, a laser-heating experiment of c-BN powders is conducted, manifesting boron clusters for the post-treated powders. A general analysis of the geometrical and surface dependence of the nanoparticle ground-state energy using a Stillinger-Weber potential determines the relative stability of cube-shaped, octahedral, cuboctahedral, and truncated-octahedral c-BN nanoparticles. This stability is further examined using transient MD simulations of the melting behavior of the differently shaped nanoparticles, providing insights and revealing the key roles played by corner and edge initiated disorder as well as surface reconstruction from {100} to the more stable {111} facets in the melting process. Finally, the size dependence of the melting point of octahedral c-BN nanoparticles is investigated, showing the well-known qualitative trend of depression of melting temperature with decreasing size, albeit with different quantitative behavior from that predicted by existing analytical models.

Cubic boron nitride (c-BN) is a super-hard material whose hardness increases dramatically with decreasing size. However, c-BN nanoparticles (NPs) with sizes less than 10 nm have never been obtained. Herein we report a simple strategy towards the synthesis of ultrafine c-BN NPs with an average size of 3.5 nm. The method, under ambient conditions, exploits a laser-induced photochemical effect and employs dioxane solution of ammonia borane (AB) as a liquid target. Meanwhile, total dehydrogenation of AB is realized by laser irradiation.
