Chrysobalanus icaco L. is a tree found in America and Africa. In Brazil it can be found in the biome along the coast. It has great food potential and its fruits, named guajiru, are consumed by fishing communities in natura and processed as jams and jellies. However, the literature on this tree species is limited. This study aims to describe the element contents and physicochemical characteristics of the C. icaco fruits from two regions in Brazil and investigate if they influence its sensory characteristics. The fruits were collected in the Northeastern region of Brazil in Maracajaú, State of Rio Grande do Norte (RN) and in Salvador, Bahia (BA). The morphometric characteristics, color, texture, and sensory analyses were carried out on the fruits in natura , and the physicochemical analyses and mineral profile on the pulp homogenized with the peel. The mineral profile showed K > Na > Mn > Mg > Ca > Fe > Mn > Cu > Zn > Ni > Cr, varying from 206 mg/100g (K) to 0.87 μg/100 g (Cr). The fruits from RN presented higher levels of trace and macronutrients, which affected the sensory characteristics, mainly the flavor, and led to better acceptance of these samples as compared to those from BA. The inflammatory response is a vital mechanism for repairing damage induced by aberrant health states or external insults; however, persistent activation can be linked to numerous chronic diseases. The nuclear factor kappa β (NF-κB) inflammatory pathway and its associated mediators have emerged as critical targets for therapeutic interventions aimed at modulating inflammation, necessitating ongoing drug development. Previous studies have reported the inhibitory effect of a hydroethanol extract derived from Parinari excelsa Sabine (Chrysobalanaceae) on tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), but the phytoconstituents and mechanisms of action remained elusive. The primary objective of this study was to elucidate the phytochemical composition of P. excelsa stem bark and its role in the mechanisms underpinning its biological activity. Two compounds were detected via HPLC-DAD-ESI(Ion Trap)-MS 2 analysis. The predominant compound was isolated and identified as naringenin-8-sulphonate (1), while the identity of the second compound (compound 2) could not be determined. Both compound 1 and the extract were assessed for anti-inflammatory properties using a cell-based inflammation model, in which THP-1-derived macrophages were stimulated with LPS to examine the treatments' effects on various stages of the NF-κB pathway. Compound 1, whose biological activity is reported here for the first time, demonstrated inhibition of NF-κB activity, reduction in interleukin 6 (IL-6), TNF-α, and interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β) production, as well as a decrease in p65 nuclear translocation in THP-1 cells, thus highlighting the potential role of sulphur substituents in the activity of naringenin (3). To explore the influence of sulphation on the anti-inflammatory properties of naringenin derivatives, we synthesized naringenin-4'-O-sulphate (4) and naringenin-7-O-sulphate (5) and evaluated their anti-inflammatory effects. Naringenin derivatives 4 and 5 did not display potent anti-inflammatory activities; however, compound 4 reduced IL-1β production, and compound 5 diminished p65 translocation, with both exhibiting the capacity to inhibit TNF-α and IL-6 production. Background: Natural products are an important source of bioproducts with pharmacological properties. Here we investigate the components of leaves from M. tomentosa Benth. (Fritsch) (Chrysobalanaceae) and its effects on bacterial cell growth, biofilm production and macrophage activity., Methods: The effect of the different leaf extracts against bacterial cell growth was performed using the microdilution method. The most active extract was analyzed by mass spectrometry, and its effect on bacterial biofilm production was evaluated on polystyrene plates. The extract effect on macrophage activity was tested in the RAW264.7 cell line, which was stimulated with different concentrations of the extract in the presence or absence of LPS., Results: We show that the ethyl acetate (EtOAc) extract was the most effective against bacterial cell growth. EtOAc extract DI-ESI (-)MS n analysis showed the presence of a glycosylated flavonoid tentatively assigned as myricetin 3-O-xylosyl-rhamnoside (MW 596). Also, the EtOAc extract increased biofilm formation by S. aureus and inhibited cytokine and NO production induced by LPS in RAW macrophages., Conclusion: M. tomentosa flavonoid-enriched EtOAc extract presented a bactericidal and anti-inflammatory pharmacological potential., (© 2023. Licania rigida Benth has been evaluated as an alternative drug to treat diseases associated with inflammatory processes. This study evaluated the anti-inflammatory effects of aqueous and hydroalcoholic leaf extracts of L. rigida with inflammation induced by lipopolysaccharides in in vitro and in vivo inflammation models. The phytochemical profile of the extracts, analyzed by ultra-fast liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry, revealed the presence of gallic and ellagic acids in both extracts, whereas isovitexin, ferulate, bulky amino acids (e.g., phenylalanine), pheophorbide, lactic acid, and pyridoxine were detected in the hydroalcoholic extract. The extracts displayed the ability to modulate in vitro and in vivo inflammatory responses, reducing approximately 50% of pro-inflammatory cytokine secretion (TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6), and inhibiting both NO production and leukocyte migration by approximately 30 and 40% at 100 and 500 µg/mL, respectively. Overall, the results highlight and identify, for the first time, the ability of L. rigida leaf extract to modulate inflammatory processes. These data suggest that the leaf extracts of this plant have potential in the development of herbal formulations for the treatment of inflammation.

Among several extracts from species from Guinea-Bissauan flora, the hydroethanol extract obtained from the leaves of gingerbread plum (Neocarya macrophylla (Sabine) Prance ex F. White.) revealed to be one of the most cytotoxic towards human gastric AGS carcinoma cells. Considering the increasing use of N. macrophylla in the food industry and the abundant biomass of agricultural wastes being generated, the identification of phenolic bioactives has been attained by HPLC-DAD-ESI/MS n and UHPLC-ESI/QTOF/MS n . Twenty-seven phenolic constituents were identified for the first time in the monotypic genus Neosartorya, 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid being detected as the major constituent (4.90 ± 0.20 mg g -1 dry extract). While 15 flavan-3-ols derivatives were determined, the extract is predominantly characterized by the occurrence of quercetin, kaempferol, apigenin and chrysoeriol glycosides. Typical apoptotic changes in gastric adenocarcinoma AGS cells upon exposure to N. macrophylla leaf extract were observed. The apoptotic cell death is mediated by the activation of the mitochondrial pathway, as loss of mitochondrial membrane potential was detected, as well as increased caspase-9 and -3 activities. The industrial relevance of this plant material, along with the data presented here on the potential anticancer effects of N. macrophylla and the efficient extraction of phenolic bioactives using water and ethanol (GRAS substance), calls for further research on the leaves as a potential functional food and/or ingredient., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Ltd. Two new ursane-type triterpenoids, named Polyanside A ( 1 ) and B ( 2 ), along with eleven known compounds ( 3 - 13 ), were isolated and elucidated from Maranthes polyandra (Benth.) Prance. The structures of these compounds were elucidated based on chemical evidence and multiple spectroscopic data. Isolated compounds were evaluated for anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory activities, and cytotoxicity on a normal human cell line (BJ). None of them showed activity and cytotoxicity. The hexane fraction was analyzed by GC-MS, resulting in the identification of forty-one compounds. This is the first comprehensive study on the phytochemistry of M. polyandra .

This study was conducted to evaluate the phenolic composition, toxicity, and antimicrobial activity of Licania rigida Benth, an underexploited wild Licania species. L. rigida leaf fractions (ethyl alcohol and ethyl acetate) were analyzed for their phenolic compound and flavonoid total, and high-performance liquid chromatography/ultraviolet spectra chromatographic profiles. Regarding the extract biological effects, toxicity was measured by acute oral toxicity in Wistar rats, MTT [3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide] method, and apoptosis indicators with DAPI in VERO cells, whereas well-agar diffusion and broth microdilution assays were applied to evaluate the antimicrobial ability. The phytochemical analysis resulted in significant amounts of phenolic compounds and total flavonoids in the extract and fraction, with flavonol-3-O-glycosylates as the main constituent. Regarding the extract and fraction antimicrobial activity, the results showed a significant effect against gram-positive bacteria and fungi, among which Staphylococcus epidermidis and Candida krusei displayed more susceptibility. No toxicity effects were observed in animals. Concerning the cytotoxicity assay, only the highest dose tested exhibited a minimal toxic effect on the analyzed cell lines. These results are relevant considering the increase of multiresistant microorganisms to conventional treatments applied. Therefore, investigating the pharmacological properties of the genus Licania is promising in the search for new sources of antimicrobial compounds.

Two new glucosamines, Microphyllose A and B were isolated from the chloroform fraction of Neocarya macrophylla fruit using flash column chromatography. The structures of these compounds were elucidated based on chemical tests and the analysis of their spectral data (IR, 1D- & 2D-NMR). The compounds have demonstrated significant (p < 0.05) antivenom activity against Naja nigricollis venom with 60 and 80% protection, respectively. When subjected to molecular docking, the compounds have demonstrated different binding affinities against three toxins (phospholipase A 2 , neurotoxin and cardiotoxin) from Naja nigricollis venom and they were further screened for ADMET analysis based on Lipinski's and Veber's rule and the compounds have failed absorptivity for oral medications. A new prenylated coumestan, campylohirtin A ( 1 ), along with fifteen phenolic known compounds ( 2‒16 ) and four other known compounds ( 17‒20 ), was obtained from the 95% ethanol extract of roots of Campylotropis hirtella . Their structures were elucidated based on extensive spectroscopic analysis (1 D and 2 D-NMR, MS, UV and IR). In vitro antimalarial activities of compounds 1 - 3 , 5 - 14 and 16 were evaluated by β -hematin formation inhibition assay. Compared with the positive control chloroquine diphosphate, compounds 8 , 11 and 16 exhibited strong antimalarial activity with the IC 50 values of 69.9, 33.2 and 75.4 µM, respectively. Compounds 1 - 3 , 5 - 7 and 12 showed moderate antimalarial activities with IC 50 values ranging from 134.6 µM to 578.6 µM.[Formula: see text].

The genus Chrysobalanus is one of the classes of medicinal plants used in the treatment and management of several diseases. This study is aimed at providing up-to-date information on the phytochemical composition and pharmacological uses of Chrysobalanus icaco. Current literature on the Chrysobalanus species was obtained by searching electronic databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar and Web of Science. Of the species in this genus, four have been reported in the literature, but only one (C. icaco) has been extensively studied. C. icaco is rich in several minerals, including potassium, magnesium, calcium and sodium. The plant also contains a host of phytochemicals, such as flavonoids, diterpenes and triterpenes, which have been shown to have pharmacological activity. It can be concluded that C. icaco is a good source of phytochemicals that contribute to its therapeutic uses. Background and Aim: Licania salicifolia (L.S) Cuatrec., Persea ferruginea (P.F) Kunth, Oreopanax floribundus (P.B) belong to the families Chrysobalanaceae, Lauraceae, Araliaceae, and Rubiaceae, respectively, which have been used as medicines by communities in the Andes. This study evaluated the leishmanicidal and cytotoxic activities of alcohol and non-alcohol extracts from four Andean plant extracts (L.S, O.F, P.F, and P.B).Psychotria buchtienii (P.B) belong to the families Chrysobalanaceae, Lauraceae, Araliaceae, and Rubiaceae, respectively, which have been used as medicines by communities in the Andes. This study evaluated the leishmanicidal and cytotoxic activities of alcohol and non-alcohol extracts from four Andean plant extracts (L.S, O.F, P.F, and P.B)., Materials and Methods: Extracts were obtained by percolation with solvents of different polarities - hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, and ethanol. Phytochemical screening was conducted based on reported methods. All products were evaluated in vitro to determine the leishmanicidal activity against amastigotes of Leishmania panamensis and cytotoxicity against U937 cells., Results: Flavonoids, triterpenes, and tannins were the main secondary metabolites found. From the results, dichloromethane extracts from O.F and P.B, ethanol extract from P.B, and ethyl acetate extracts of all plants were active, with EC 50 <30 μg/mL. Ethyl acetate was the most active extract, which showed EC 50 values of 9.8, 14.1, 23.7, and 25.5 μg/mL, for L.S, P.B, O.F, and P.F, respectively. Hexane extracts from P.B and O.F exhibited moderate activity with EC 50 values of 84.8 and 87.4 μg/mL, respectively. Hexane and ethanol extracts from O.F, ethyl acetate, and ethanol extracts from L.S, and all extracts from P.F were not toxic. Alternatively, hexane and dichloromethane extracts from L.S and P.B as well as dichloromethane and ethyl acetate extracts from O.F displayed high toxicity., Conclusion: Based on the activity we observed, ethyl acetate extract can continue in its usage in the search for new antileishmanial drugs, mainly ethyl acetate extract from L.S showed activity comparable to meglumine antimoniate and was not cytotoxic., (Copyright: © Cardona-G, et al.)

Introduction: Objective: the purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Chrysobalanus icaco on adiposity and its mechanism of action in the gene and protein expression of acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC), a key enzyme in lipogenesis. Method: Wistar rats were divided into a regular or control group (CG) and a high-fat diet (HFD) group. HFD was treated with saline or aqueous extract of Chrysobalanus icaco (AECI) for four weeks. Body weight and food intake were assessed. Subcutaneous, retroperitoneal and periepididymal adipose tissue samples were collected and weighed. Adipocytes from periepididymal tissue were isolated and analyzed. The gene and protein expression of ACC in subcutaneous tissue was determined. Results: AECI showed no effect on intake or body weight. However, the weight of the fat pads and the gene and protein expression of ACC were lower, and glucose tolerance was improved. Conclusion: the aqueous extract of Chrysobalanus icaco proved beneficial for the treatment of obesity, preventing fat storage and improving glycemic homeostasis.

Chrysobalanus icaco L. is a native plant of Brazil used as a food source and traditionally for the treatment of various diseases. The aim of study was performed the phytochemical analysis by UPLC-DAD-ESI-QTOF-MS/MS, and evaluated acute and repeated dose oral toxicities of the C. icaco L. leaf aqueous extract (AECi). The acute toxicity study was performed using a dose of AECi 2000 mg/kg, while the repeated dose toxicity study, the AECi was administered daily at doses of 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg, for 28 days. Behavior and mortality of animals were observed during the test period and body weight, as well water and eating consumption. Hematological, biochemical parameters and histopathological examinations were carried out. Phytochemical analysis of the AECi revealed the presence of flavonoids and tannins. Oral single dose of 2000 mg/kg of AECi resulted in no mortalities or abnormal clinical signs. Studies of repeated dose toxicity promoted a reduction in the body weight of treated animals and an increase of hepatic enzymes alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) in both, males and females. Histopathological analyzes showed alterations in the livers of animals treated with AECi. Licania tomentosa is a Brazilian plant species that produces edible fruits, yet there is little information available concerning their nutritional and/or bioactive composition. This study aimed to evaluate the nutritional and polyphenol composition of L. tomentosa fruits (pulp and seeds) and measure antioxidant activity in ethanolic extracts.The pulp and seeds were excellent sources of fiber (25.62%-41.70%) as well as minerals and vitamins. L. tomentosa contained no lectins or protease inhibitors (chymotrysin and trypsin) and 12 polyphenol compounds were identified in the seed extracts with a predominance of flavonoids. The seeds also presented antioxidant activities using the DPPH (SC 50 10.30-15.87 μg/mL), TBARS (IC 50 18.46-20.84 μg/mL), and FRAP (RC 50 0.203-0.309 μg/mL) assays. Context: Chrysobalanus icaco L. (Chrysobalanaceae) has been used for the treatment of abdominal pain and cramps., Objective: Assess the chemical and pharmacological profile of the lyophilized aqueous extract from C. icaco leaves (AEC)., Materials and Methods: Chromatographic methods were used to assess compounds from AEC. Mice were treated with vehicle (control group) or AEC (100, 200 or 400 mg/kg, p.o.) (group with 7-8 mice) and the analgesic profile was assessed employing the acetic acid-induced writhing, formalin, hot plate tests and hyperalgesia induced by carrageenan (CG) or tumour necrosis factor-alpha. The animal motor performance was assessed using rota-rod and grip strength tests., Results: The chromatographic profile of AEC demonstrated the presence of terpenoid compounds. The acute pretreatment with AEC, at all doses, produced a significant (p < 0.01) inhibition of painful bahaviour (11.4 ± 3.6; 10.3 ± 2.8; 11.3 ± 2.2) when compared to the control group (24.7 ± 4.7) in acetic acid-induced writhing test. In the formalin test, AEC were effective in the second phase (p < 0.01) (57.2 ± 10.3; 56.3 ± 9.2; 54.7 ± 8.9) when compared to control group (121.9 ± 18.5). No response was observed in the hot plate test. The higher dose of AEC produced a significant (p < 0.01 or p < 0.05) inhibitory effect on the mechanical hyperalgesia test. AEC did not affect the motor performance of the mice., Discussion: The terpenoids from AEC are known for its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. So, these results corroborate the experiments using the AEC in inflammatory pain protocols., Conclusion: Our results suggest that AEC act against inflammatory pain.

Premise of the Study: The complex geological and climatic history of the Neotropics has had major implications on the diversification of plant lineages. Chrysobalanaceae is a pantropical family of trees and shrubs with 75% of its 531 species found in the Neotropics, and a time-calibrated phylogeny of this family should shed light on the tempo of diversification in the Neotropical flora. Previously published phylogenetic hypotheses of this family were poorly supported, and its biogeography remains unclear., Methods: We assembled the complete plastid genome of 51 Chrysobalanaceae species, and increased taxon sampling by Sanger-sequencing of five plastid regions for an additional 88 species. We generated a time-calibrated tree including all 139 Chrsyobalanaceae species and 23 outgroups. We then conducted an ancestral area reconstruction analysis and estimated diversification rates in the family., Key Results: The tree generated with the plastid genome alignment was almost fully resolved. It supports the polyphyly of Licania and Hirtella. The family has diversified starting around the Eocene-Oligocene transition. An ancestral area reconstruction confirms a Paleotropical origin for Chrysobalanaceae with several transoceanic dispersal events. The main Neotropical clade likely resulted from a single migration event from Africa around 28 mya ago, which subsequently underwent rapid diversification., Conclusions: Given the diverse ecologies exhibited by extant species, we hypothesize that the rapid diversification of Chrysobalanaceae following the colonization of the Neotropics was triggered by habitat specialization during the complex geological and paleoclimatic history of the Neotropics., (© 2016 Botanical Society of America.)

Premise of the Study: Chrysobalanaceae are woody plants with over 500 species in 20 genera. They are among the most common trees in tropical forests, but a sparse fossil record has limited our ability to test evolutionary and biogeographic hypotheses, and several previous reports of Chrysobalanaceae megafossils are doubtful., Methods: We prepared fossil endocarps and wood collected from the lower Miocene beds along the Panama Canal using the cellulose acetate peel technique and examined them using light microscopy. We compared the fossil endocarps with previously published fossils and with fruits from herbarium specimens. We compared the fossil wood with photographs and descriptions of extant species., Key Results: Parinari endocarps can be distinguished from other genera within Chrysobalanaceae by a suite of features, i.e., thick wall, a secondary septum, seminal cavities lined with dense, woolly trichomes, and two ovate to lingulate basal germination plugs. Fossil endocarps from the Cucaracha, Culebra, and La Boca Formations confirm that Parinari was present in the neotropics by the early Miocene., Conclusions: The earliest unequivocal evidence of crown-group Chrysobalanaceae is late Oligocene-early Miocene, and the genus Parinari was distinct by at least 19 million years ago. Parinari and other Chrysobalanaceae likely reached the neotropics via long-distance dispersal rather than vicariance. The presence of Parinari in the Cucaracha flora supports the interpretation of a riparian, moist tropical forest environment. Chrysobalanus icaco L. is a medicinal plant present in the Brazilian coastline and known for its hypoglicemic and antioxidant properties. Here, we assessed the beneficial metabolic effects of the aqueous extract of C. icaco (AECI) leaves in diet-induced obese mice. Swiss mice were fed standard chow (SC used as controls) or high-fat diet (HFD) to induce obesity. After 10 weeks, mice on each diet were divided into two groups with one group used as control while the other group treated with AECI for 4 weeks resulting in four groups of mice: SC; SC treated with AECI (SC + AECI); HFD; and HFD treated with AECI (HFD + AECI). AECI was administered drinking water at about 200 mg/kg. AECI was able to normalize insulin (13,682 ± 1090 vs. 9828 ± 485 AU, P < .05) and fasting blood glucose (192.8 ± 14.2 vs. 132.3 ± 6.4 mg/dL, P < .05) and inhibit weight gain (39 ± 5.7%) and fat storage in liver (72.60 ± 3.83%, P < .0001), despite the high-fat intake. These findings reinforce the use of AECI in hyperglycemia and highlight the potential extract's effect in preventing weight gain and fat accumulation in liver of diet-induced obese mice.

Recent collections received for identification contain three conspicuous new species for the mid altitude forests of Amazonian Peru. Licaniapalcazuensis, Licaniaapiknae and Licaniamonteagudensis are described as new and their relationship to other species is discussed. A key is provided for all the species of LicaniasubgenusLicaniasectionLicania known to occur in Peru.

The beetle, Anomala testaceipennis Blanchard (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae), occurs in central-western Brazil where larvae feed on the roots of plants causing damage. This research aimed to study sexual dimorphism and mating behavior of A. testaceipennis. Adults of A. testaceipennis were collected with light traps in the experimental area of the State University of Mato Grosso do Sul, in Aquidauana. Laboratory experiments were performed to describe copulation behavior and adult morphology of males and females. In males the last abdominal segment has a pronounced constriction, which is absent in females, and the male's last segment of the first pair of legs has a ventral projection, which is poorly developed in females. The mating activities of adults begin soon after sunset, when adults leave the soil and fly. When the male encounters a female, he touches her with antennae and tarsi. If accepted, the male climbs on the female and remains on her back, and soon after the copulation begins. When the female does not accept the male for mating, she moves rapidly and can roll on the ground, and by so removing the male. In the field, adults feed and mate on bloomed trees of Oiti, Licania tomentosa Benth (Malpighiales: Chrysobalanaceae) and Louro, Cordia glabrata Martius (Boraginaceae). A new mid altitude species of the predominantly lowland genus Licania, Licania condoriensis from Ecuador is described and illustrated.

Context: Parinari excelsa Sabine (Chrysobalanaceae) is an indigenous tree from West and Eastern Africa. This tree is used in Ivory Coast as an antimalaria remedy., Objective: The in vitro antiplasmodial and antileishmanial activities of the stem bark, the leaf and the major compounds from the stem bark were investigated., Materials and Methods: The leaves and stem bark from P. excelsa were separately collected, air-dried and powdered. Two extracts (methylene chloride and methanol) were realized for both powders. Every extract was tested for its antiplasmodial and antileishmanial activities. Only the stem bark crude extracts were fractionated by column chromatography and their major components were analyzed by NMR, HRESIMS and IR methods. The compounds were tested for their antiplasmodial and antileishmanial activities., Results: The comparison of the IC(50) values of the crude extracts were in this order: 3.41 (IC(50) of PeBMc) <4.10 (IC(50) of PeBMc) <4.42 (IC(50) of PeLMe) against P. falciparum and 5.19 (IC(50) of PeBMc) <12.32 (IC(50) of PeBMe) <19.33 (IC(50) of PeLMc) <32.37 (IC(50) of PeLMe) against L. donovani. The stem bark crude extracts were the most active against both parasites. Their fractionation leaded to a new ventiloquinone, five triterpenes and one chlorogenic acid. All these compounds were isolated for the first time from P. excelsa. High activities were observed with (3β)-3-hydroxyolean-12-en-28-oic acid (IC(50) = 8.2 µM) and 3β-hydroxyolean-5,12-dien-28-oic acid (IC(50) = 7.7 µM) against L. donovani. With the antiplasmodial activity, the best activity was observed with 16β-hydroxylupane-1,20(29)-dien-3-one (IC(50) = 28.3 µM)., Discussion and Conclusion: These findings demonstrated that the constituents of P. excelsa stem bark have in vitro antiplasmodial and antileishmanial activities.

Predation pressure affects most aspects of primate behaviour, and is especially pronounced in the context of the use of sleeping sites, given the vulnerability of the animal at this time. Most small-bodied platyrrhines have highly systematic patterns of sleeping site choice and use. This study analyses the use of sleeping sites by a free-ranging group of titis (Callicebus coimbrai) monitored at a site in Sergipe, Brazil, between July, 2009 and June, 2010. When the subjects approached a sleeping tree their behaviour was typically cautious, including slow and silent movement, early retirement (20-162 min before sunset on 52 dry afternoons), and sleeping in a tight huddle with their tails entwined. Despite this behaviour, which has an obvious anti-predator function, the group slept in only three different trees during the course of the study, and returned to the same tree used on the previous night on a quarter of evenings (n = 56). This was despite the availability within the group's home range of a large number of trees with similar structural characteristics (i.e. tall, open crown in the upper canopy). Surprisingly, the three trees were all members of the same species, Licania littoralis (Chrysobalanaceae). The choice of this species, which was not an important source of dietary resources, and the repeated use of a small number of sites, did not seem to be related to factors such as ranging or foraging patterns, but may have a been a response to the specific threat from capuchins, Cebus xanthosternos.

In this article we describe the behavioral responses of a group of white-faced sakis' (Pithecia pithecia) to fruit and water scarcity. Six sakis were observed on Round Island in Guri Lake, Venezuela, between March and May 1996. These months are considered the dry season and the beginning of the wet season. Sakis specialize in eating seeds. During the present study only one tree species, Licania discolor (Chrysobalanaceae), fruited in substantial numbers. Licania seeds accounted for 88% of the time the sakis spent eating fruit in March, 87% in April, and 80% in May. We estimate that the sakis' intake of Licania seeds dropped from 2,573 seeds in the 15-day observation period in March to 956 seeds in the 16-day observation period in May. The sakis not only spent less time eating Licania, they ate the seeds at a much slower rate. The drop in the sakis' feeding rate was probably due to increased local search and inspection times. In response to the scarcity of fruit, the sakis ate more young leaves, insects, and flowers. Feeding bouts became more frequent but shorter. Mean distances between feeding bouts fell significantly and the sakis revisited trees less often., (2005 Wiley-Liss, Inc.)

Licanolide (3beta-hydroxylupane-20,28-olide), a novel triterpene lactone with new stereochemical pattern, was isolated from fresh fruits of Licania tomentosa in addition to betulinic and palmitoleic acid. The structure elucidation was based on spectroscopic methods including two-dimensional NMR experiments (HSQC, HMBC and NOESY).

The phytochemical studies of the leaves of Licania arianeae Prance (Crysobalanaceae) have led to the identification of ten new chromones, four 5,7-dihydroxy-2-alkylchromones, four 5,7-dihydroxy-6-chloro-2-alkylchromones and two 5,7-dihydroxy-6,8-dichloro-2-alkylchromones. The structures were established from IR, NMR and FAB-MS spectra data including 2D NMR experiments of natural substances and of the methyl derivatives.

Plants have been related to our lives, being used as medicine, regardless of scientific evidence of side effects. This work analyses the toxicological effects of Chrysobalanus icaco L. aqueous extract, used in different pathologies. It was studied through: (i) alteration of plasmid pUC 9.1 topology; (ii) survival of bacterial strains submitted, or not, to previous treatment with SnCl2; (iii) transformation efficiency of E. coli strain by the treatment with the plasmid pUC 9.1. In (i), the treatment of the plasmid resulted in DNA single-strand breaks (SSB). A decrease of the lethal effect induced by SnCl2 in presence of the extract was found, while no C. icaco bacterial survival reduction was observed. The transformation efficiency of the plasmid was also reduced. Results suggest that the extract could present a potential genotoxic effect, as demonstrated either by the induction of SSB in plasmid or in transformation efficiency experiments. Finally, it presents an antioxidant action.
