Rain gardens are widely used for low impact development (LID) or as a nature-based solution (NbS). They help to reduce runoff, mitigate hot temperatures, create habitats for plants and insects, and beautify landscapes. Rain gardens are increasingly being established in urban areas. In Taiwan, the Ministry of Environment (MoE) initiated a rain garden project in Taipei city in 2018, and 15 rain gardens have since been constructed in different cities. These Taiwanese-style rain gardens contain an underground storage tank to collect the filtrated rainwater, which can be used for irrigation. Moreover, the 15 rain gardens are equipped with sensors to monitor temperature, rainfall, and underground water levels. The monitoring data were transmitted with Internet of Things (IoT) technology, enabling the capture and export of real-time values. The water retention, temperature mitigation, water quality, and ecological indices of the rain gardens were quantified using field data. The results from the young rain gardens (1-3 years) showed that nearly 100 % of the rainfall was retained onsite and did not flow out from the rain gardens; however, if the stored water was not used and the tanks were full, the rainwater from subsequent storms could not be stored, and the tanks overflowed. The surface temperatures of the rain garden and nearby impermeable pavement differed by an average of 2-4 °C. This difference exceeded 20 °C in summer at noon. The water in the underground storage tanks had very low levels of SS and BOD, with averages of 1.6 mg/L and 5.6 mg/L, respectively. However, the E. coli concentrations were high, and the average was 6283 CFU/100 mL; therefore, washing or drinking water is not recommended. The ecological indices, i.e., the Shannon and Simpson indices, demonstrated the good flora status of the rain gardens after one year. Although the weather differed by city, the performance of the rain gardens in terms of water retention, temperature mitigation, rainwater harvesting, and providing biological habitats was consistent. However, maintenance influences rain garden performance. In local chickens targeted for niche markets, genotyping costs are relatively high due to the small population size and diverse breeding goals. The single-step genomic best linear unbiased prediction (ssGBLUP) model, which combines pedigree and genomic information, has been introduced to increase the accuracy of genomic estimated breeding value (GEBV). Therefore, this model may be more beneficial than the genomic BLUP (GBLUP) model for genomic selection in local chickens. Additionally, the single-step genome-wide association study (ssGWAS) can be used to extend the ssGBLUP model results to animals with available phenotypic information but without genotypic data. In this study, we compared the accuracy of (G)EBVs using the pedigree-based BLUP (PBLUP), GBLUP, and ssGBLUP models. Moreover, we conducted single-SNP GWAS (SNP-GWAS), GBLUP-GWAS, and ssGWAS methods to identify genes associated with egg production traits in the NCHU-G101 chicken to understand the feasibility of using genomic selection in a small population. The average prediction accuracy of (G)EBV for egg production traits using the PBLUP, GBLUP, and ssGBLUP models is 0.536, 0.531, and 0.555, respectively. In total, 22 suggestive- and 5% Bonferroni genome-wide significant-level SNPs for total egg number (EN), average laying rate (LR), average clutch length, and total clutch number are detected using 3 GWAS methods. These SNPs are mapped onto Gallus gallus chromosomes (GGA) 4, 6, 10, 18, and 25 in NCHU-G101 chicken. Furthermore, through SNP-GWAS and ssGWAS methods, we identify 2 genes on GGA4 associated with EN and LR: ENSGALG00000023172 and PPARGC1A. In conclusion, the ssGBLUP model demonstrates superior prediction accuracy, performing on average 3.41% than the PBLUP model. The implications of our gene results may guide future selection strategies for Taiwan Country chickens. This study examined the sediment metal fractions and availability to infer bioaccumulation in marine harbor benthic organisms. Total metals were analyzed using atomic absorption spectrometry and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry for chemical fractions and organisms. The results showed similar metal concentrations and distribution driven by rivers and harbor pollution. We found significant differences in metal accumulation in marine benthic groups, highest in scavenger species. Their metal concentrations in decreasing order were 1.97-4568, 0.10-1260, 1.64-159, and 0.105-112 μg g -1 dw for hermit crabs, forams, bivalves, and polychaetes. Moreover, certain organisms, such as tusk shells, sea pens, bivalves, forams, and isopods, may exhibit selective metal accumulation. Biota-sediment accumulation factors (>1) were highest for essential metals like Cu, Zn, and Mn, while toxic metals like As, Cr, Co, and Ni increased. We evaluated the influence of organic matter in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in port sediments using multiple linear regression (MLR) and prediction models. Total sediment PAHs ranged between 45 and 3230 ng/g dw (average: 557 ± 962 ng/g dw), with PAHs primarily originating from river inputs, confined to areas near the estuaries. Coal/biomaterial combustion and petroleum mainly contribute to the presence of PAHs along estuaries, with medium-high to high ecological risks. MLR TPAHs prediction model included variables, namely, the marine-derived total organic carbon (TOC mar ), terrestrial fraction of organic matter (F terr ), and carbon-to‑nitrogen ratio (CNR). Results indicate that mainly marine- followed by terrestrially-derived organic matter influenced sediment PAH distribution. Total organic nitrogen and CNR were variables in the toxic equivalent (TEQ) prediction model, demonstrating that terrestrial pollution sources primarily influenced TEQ. The rapid increase of offshore projects at Taiwan Strait in recent decade has been debated for elevated noise levels. However, there are no studies on long-term assessment of noise levels and impact of noise on marine organisms. The passive acoustic monitoring was conducted at the foremost wind farm area in Taiwan to assess the sound levels and the impact of noise on fish vocalization behavior. Predominately, in the soundscape around the Taiwan Strait, two chorusing types (Type 1 and Type 2) from the Sciaenid family of fishes exist. Ambient sound levels significantly increased from 2014 to 2019, while the chorusing Types 1 and 2 were observed in a lower percentage of the recordings. Additionally, chorusing peak intensity and duration significantly reduced over the years for both choruses. Objective: Observational studies have reported that major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with sedentary behavior (SB) and multiple chronic pain (MCP), but their associations remain unclear. Mendelian randomization analysis was used to assess the association., Methods: Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with MCP, SB [time spent watching television (Tel), using a computer (Com), or driving (Dri)], and MDD were collected from genome-wide association studies and screened as instrumental variants with a threshold of 1 × 10-5. Mendelian randomization was performed to examine their associations. Sensitivity analyses were conducted to evaluate robustness., Results: MCP was associated with a higher risk of MDD [odds ratio (OR) inverse variance weighting (IVW) = 1.88; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.64-2.15; P = 4.26 × 10-8), and causally related to SB (Tel: ORIVW = 1.23; 95% CI, 1.19-1.26; P = 6.02 × 10-38) (Dri: ORIVW = 1.05; 95% CI, 1.03-1.08; P = 3.92 × 10-5). Causality of SB on MCP was detected for Tel (ORIVW = 1.46; 95% CI, 1.39-1.53; P = 1.40 × 10-54) and Com (ORIVW = 0.88; 95% CI, 0.83-0.93; P = 2.50 × 10-6). No association was observed for SB on MDD. There is currently insufficient evidence to support that leisure activities are a mediating factor in MCP-induced MDD., Conclusion: There are complex relationships among MCP, SB, and MDD. Microplastics (MPs) pose risks to both aquatic ecosystems and human health. This study investigated MPs in the shells and soft tissues of hard clams (Meretrix taiwanica) cultured in the inland waters of Taiwan. This study further developed two novel risk indices for assessing the potential ecological and health consequences of MPs. Moreover, the metal concentrations in the clam's soft tissues and the associated consumption health risks were investigated. Clamshells contained significant amounts of MPs with an average abundance of 16.6 ± 6.9 MPs/ind., which was higher than in the soft tissues (2.7 ± 1.7 MPs/ind.). The distribution and sizes of MPs in shells and soft tissues were similar, primarily small-sized (<2 mm, >99 %), blue (>65 %), and fibrous (>99 %). Dominant MP polymer types included rayon (83.5 %), polyethylene terephthalate (11.8 %), and polyacrylonitrile (3.6 %). The proposed MP potential ecological risk index indicates a higher potential ecological MP risk in soft tissues (302-423) than in shells (270-278) of the clams. The MP potential hazard risk index showed that the risk of exposure to MP through shellfish consumption decreased with age. The total hazard index (THI) value suggested negligible health hazards from metal exposure through shellfish consumption. Moreover, there was no significant correlation between MPs and metal concentrations in soft tissues, suggesting that metals bound to MPs contribute minimally to the total accumulated metals in clam's soft tissues. The strategy of integrating conformational isomerization donors and chiral acceptors in a single molecule was proposed to construct white circularly polarized luminescence (WCPL) materials in this work. Consequently, a pair of dual-emission enantiomers, namely (R/S)-DO-PTZ, were designed and synthesized, which displayed white emission with blue and yellow dual-emission bands in solution and solid films with Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.30, 0.33) and (0.33, 0.35), respectively. Meanwhile, (R/S)-DO-PTZ exhibited a high PLQY of up to 67 % in doped films and clear mirror-image WCPL signals with a |g lum | value of 3.0×10 -3 . Moreover, white circularly polarized electroluminescence (WCPEL) based on organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with (R/S)-DO-PTZ as emitters were also achieved with CIE coordinates of (0.32, 0.37) and EQE max of 4.7 %, representing the state-of-the-art level of white OLEDs based on single-molecule purely organic emitters. By optimizing the device structure, warm WCPEL devices were further obtained with a |g EL | value of 2.8×10 -3 , CIE coordinates of (0.37, 0.48) and EQE max of up to 15.6 %. The impact of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) on the marine food web is crucially understudied in the primary trophic system. We evaluated the seasonal dynamics of PAHs in microplankton in a polluted environment (Taiwan), northeastern South China Sea. Replicate size-fractionated microplankton (55-1000 μm) were freeze-dried, and PAHs were extracted with a 1:1 v/v ratio of acetone: n-hexane, then analyzed using GC-MS. Total PAHs ranged between 68 and 2548 ng/g dw in microplankton, greatest during spring (130-2548 ng/g), followed by autumn (135-772 ng/g) and summer (44-423 ng/g). Spatial distribution varied through seasons but was higher in the southern part (S6 > S4 > S5 > S2 > S3 > S1 > S7), dominated by higher-ring PAHs from mixed pyrogenic and petrogenic sources. PAHs are significantly correlated with environmental factors, especially in colder seasons and lower salinity areas. Suspended matter and plankton influenced PAH transport and partitioning seasonally. Marine organisms, especially top predators such as sharks, are susceptible to environmental pollutants like microplastics (MPs) and phthalate esters (PAEs), leading to ecosystem risks. Research on contamination in these apex species is, however, still limited. This study investigated MPs and PAEs in multiple shark species (Isurus oxyrinchus, Alopias superciliosus, Alopias pelagicus, Carcharhinus brevipinna, and Sphyrna zygaena) off Taiwan's eastern coast. Gastric tissue analyses revealed ubiquitous microplastics (2-31 particles), which positively correlated with body lengths and weights for Isurus oxyrinchus. Blue, fiber-shaped (1-2 mm), and rayon-based MPs are likely associated with textile fiber pollution. The PAEs concentration mean was 7035 ± 6829 ng/g, ww, having DEHP and DiNP as primary compounds. Background: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a highly aggressive cancer type that urgently requires effective therapeutic strategies. Andrographolide, a labdane diterpenoid compound abundant in Andrographis paniculata, has anticancer effects against various cancer types, but its anticancer activity and mechanism against PDAC remain largely uncharacterized., Purpose: This study explores novel drug target(s) and underlying molecular mechanism of andrographolide against PDAC., Study Design and Methods: The malignant phenotypes of PDAC cells, PANC-1 and MIA PaCa-2 cells, were measured using MTT, clonogenic assays, and Transwell migration assays. A PDAC xenograft animal model was used to evaluate tumor growth in vivo. Western blot, immunofluorescence and immunohistochemistry were used for measuring protein expression. The TCGA database was analyzed to evaluate promoter methylation status, gene expression, and their relationship with patient survival rates. RT-qPCR was used for detecting mRNA expression. Reporter assays were used for detecting signal transduction pathways. Promoter DNA methylation was determined by sodium bisulfite treatment and methylation-specific PCR (MSP). The biological function and role of specific genes involved in drug effects were measured through gene overexpression., Results: Andrographolide treatment suppressed the proliferation and migration of PDAC cells and impaired tumor growth in vivo. Furthermore, andrographolide induced the mRNA and protein expression of zinc finger protein 382 (ZNF382) in PDAC cells. Overexpression of ZNF382 inhibited malignant phenotypes and cancer-associated signaling pathways (AP-1, NF-κB and β-catenin) and oncogenes (ZEB-1, STAT-3, STAT-5, and HIF-1α). Overexpression of ZNF382 delayed growth of PANC-1 cells in vivo. ZNF382 mRNA and protein expression was lower in tumor tissues than in adjacent normal tissues of pancreatic cancer patients. Analysis of the TCGA database found the ZNF382 promoter is hypermethylated in primary pancreatic tumors which correlates with its low expression. Furthermore, andrographolide inhibited the expression of DNA methyltransferase 3 beta (DNMT3B) and increased the demethylation of the ZNF382 promoter in PDAC cells. Macrocycle-to-macrocycle conversion is an effective strategy to construct new macrocyclic arenes with specific structures. Herein, a new class of chiral macrocyclic arene, namely, octopus[5]arenes (Oc5s), cannot be synthesized by the direct approach from the corresponding chiral monomers but can be successfully achieved by a macrocycle-to-macrocycle conversion strategy utilizing racemic pagoda[5]arenes as the starting materials. It was found that enantiomeric Oc5s showed fixed conformations and stable chiral structures and exhibited significant chiral recognition toward chiral diamines.

This paper reports on development of an optical biosensor for the detection of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 virus proteins in blood serum. ZnO nanotetrapods with high surface area and stable room temperature photoluminescence (PL) were selected as transducers. Structure and optical properties of the ZnO tetrapods have been studied by XRD, SEM and Raman spectroscopy. Crystallinity, dimensions and emission peaks of the ZnO tetrapods were determined. The ZnO tetrapods were fixed on glass chip. Silanization of ZnO tetrapods surface resulted in forming of functional surface groups suitable for the immobilization of bioselective layer. Two types of recombinant proteins (rS and rN) have been used to form bioselective layer on the surface of the ZnO tetrapods. Flow through microfluidic system, integrated with optical system, has been used for the determination of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 virus proteins present in blood samples. The SARS-CoV-2 probes, prepared in PBS solution, have been injected into the measurement chamber with a constant pumping speed. Steady-state photoluminescence spectra and photoluminescence kinetics have been studied before and after injection of the probes. The biosensor signal has been tested to anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in the range of 0.001 nM-1 nM. Control measurements have been performed with blood serum of healthy person. ZnO-SARS-CoV-2-rS and ZnO-SARS-CoV-2-rN biosensors showed high stability and sensitivity to anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in the range of 0.025-0.5 nM (LOD 0.01 nM) and 0.3-1 nM (LOD 0.3 nM), respectively. Gibbs free energy of interaction between ZnO/SARS-CoV-2-rS and ZnO/SARS-CoV-2-rN bioselective layers with anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies showed -35.5 and -21.4 kJ/mol, respectively. Average detection time of biosensor integrated within microfluidic system was 15-20 min. The detection time and pumping speed (50 μL/min) were optimized to make detection faster. In this work, we report the syntheses of three Pt(II) emitters, namely, Pt4N1, Pt4N2, and Pt4N3, to which their tetradentate chelates were assembled by linking two pyrazolate chelates with a single xylenylamino entity. Functionalization of Pt4N1 was achieved upon addition of electronegative CF3 substituent on pyridinyl groups and switching to more electron deficient pyrazinyl groups in giving Pt4N2 and Pt4N3, respectively. The vertical arranged xylenylamino entity has effectively suppressed the inter-molecular π-π stacking and Pt···Pt interaction, as shown by the single crystal X-ray structural analyses. Upon fabrication of OLED devices, Pt4N2 and Pt4N3 based devices delivered efficient cyan and green emission, with an EQEmax of 15.2% and 11.2%, respectively, affirming the successfulness of the tetradentate chelating strategy., (© 2024 Wiley‐VCH GmbH.)

Introduction: The choice between simultaneous and staged bilateral total knee arthroplasty (BTKA) remains controversial. Age-adjusted Charlson Comorbidity Index(CCI) is a promising tool for risk-stratification. We aimed to compare the outcomes between patients who underwent simultaneous and staged BTKA, stratified by age-adjusted CCI scores., Materials and Methods: We conducted this retrospective, single-surgeon case series from 2010 to 2020. This study consisted of 1558 simultaneous BTKA and 786 staged BTKA procedures. The outcome domains included 30-day and 90-day readmission and 1-year reoperation events. We performed multivariate regression analysis to compare the risk of readmission and reoperation following simultaneous and staged BTKA. Other factors included age, sex, body mass index, diabetes mellitus, rheumatoid arthritis, smoking, receiving thromboprophylaxis and blood transfusion., Results: The rates of 30-day, 90-day readmission and 1-year reoperation following simultaneous BTKA was 1.99%, 2.70% and 0.71%, respectively. The rates of 30-day, 90-day readmission and 1-year reoperation following staged BTKA was 0.89%, 1.78% and 0.89%, respectively. For patients with age-adjusted CCI ≥ 4 points, simultaneous BTKA was associated with a higher risk of 30-day (aOR:3.369, 95% CI:0.990-11.466) and 90-day readmission (aOR:2.310, 95% CI:0.942-5.668). In patients with age-adjusted CCI ≤ 3 points, the risk of readmission and reoperation was not different between simultaneous or staged BTKA., Conclusion: Simultaneous BTKA was associated with an increased risk of short-term readmissions in patients with age-adjusted CCI ≥ 4 points but not in those with age-adjusted CCI ≤ 3 points. This study addresses the degree to which three selection factors (parent personality, depression, and coparent support) drive movement into neighborhoods and predict changes in youth externalizing behavior. Two studies followed children from birth to age 15 ( N = 1,364 for Study 1; N = 4,898 for Study 2). Neighborhood socioeconomic disadvantage, family income, and youth externalizing behavior were consistently and significantly correlated cross sectionally and longitudinally. Selection factors predicted changes in youth externalizing behavior. Higher family income, mother agreeableness, and perceived support from a coparent predicted movement over time into less disadvantaged neighborhoods. Lower levels of mother impulsivity, neuroticism, and depression also predicted movement over time into less disadvantaged neighborhoods. Neighborhood disadvantage did not predict change in youth externalizing behavior when any of the above selection factors were included in the model. A promising kind of ternary chiral co-assemblies with high PLQY, large dissymmetry factor (g lum ), and narrowband multi-resonance characteristics are achieved by codoped-thermal annealing treatments of achiral luminescent polymer F8BT, chiral inducers R/S-5011, and achiral FRET acceptor DBN-ICZ. The optimized co-assemblies (F8BT) 0.9 -(R/S-5011) 0.1 -(DBN-ICZ) 0.005 display narrowband yellow emission with full-width half maximum (FWHM) of 37 nm, PLQY of 79%, and intense CPL signals with |g lum | of up to 0.26. Meaningfully, solution-processed CP-OLEDs by using those ternary chiral co-assemblies as emitting layer are successfully fabricated, which display yellow circularly polarized electroluminescence (CPEL) with EQE max of 4.6% and g EL of up to 0.16. The corresponding Q-factor could reach up to 7.36 × 10 -3 , which is the highest of all the reported CP-OLEDs. Moreover, the devices also exhibit excellent comprehensive device performance with low V on of 7.0 V, high L max of about 25 000 cd m -2 , extremely low efficiency roll-off with EQE of 4.3% at 10 000 cd m -2 , as well as narrowband EL with FWHM of only 39 nm. The proposed ternary co-assembly strategy in fabricating CP-OLED provides the possibility to achieve high comprehensive device performance such as balancing high EQE and large g EL value, as well as narrowband emission, high brightness and low efficiency roll-off simultaneously., (© 2024 Wiley‐VCH GmbH.)

Background: Sheehan's syndrome is a rare condition, which is classically characterized by anterior pituitary hypofunction following postpartum shock or hemorrhage. While diabetes insipidus (DI) is not commonly associated with Sheehan's syndrome, we present a rare case of a multiparous female developing rapid-onset panhypopituitarism and DI following severe postpartum hemorrhage., Case Presentation: A previously healthy 39-year-old woman, gravida 5, para 4, presented with hypovolemic shock after vaginal delivery, attributed to severe postpartum hemorrhage, necessitating emergent hysterectomy. Although her shock episodes resolved during hospitalization, she developed intermittent fever, later diagnosed as adrenal insufficiency. Administration of hydrocortisone effectively resolved the fever. However, she subsequently developed diabetes insipidus. Diagnosis of Sheehan's syndrome with central diabetes insipidus was confirmed through functional hormonal tests and MRI findings. Treatment consisted of hormone replacement therapy, with persistent panhypopituitarism noted during a ten-year follow-up period., Conclusions: Sheehan's syndrome is a rare complication of postpartum hemorrhage. Central diabetes insipidus should be suspected, although not commonly, while the patient presented polyuria and polydipsia. Circularly polarized electroluminescence (CPEL) is highly promising in realm of 3D display and optical data storage. However, designing a groundbreaking chiral material with high comprehensive CPEL performance remains a formidable challenge. In this work, a pair of chiral polymers with self-assembled behavior is designed by integrating a chiral BN-moiety into polyfluorene backbone, named R-PBN and S-PBN, respectively. The chiral polymers show narrowband emission centered at 490 nm with full-width half maximum (FWHM) of 29 nm and high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 79%. After thermal annealing treatment, the chiral polymers undergo self-assembly, exhibiting amplified circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) with asymmetry factor (|glum|) of up to 0.11. Moreover, the solution-processed nondoped CP-OLEDs based on the chiral polymers as emitting layers exhibit maximum external quantum efficiency (EQEmax) of 9.8%, intense CPEL activities with |gEL| of up to 0.07, and small FWHM of 36 nm, simultaneously. Chirality-driven self-sorting plays an essential role in controlling the biofunction of biosystems, such as the chiral double-helix structure of DNA from self-recognition by hydrogen bonding. However, achieving precise control over the chiral self-sorted structures and their functional properties for the bioinspired supramolecular systems still remains a challenge, not to mention realizing dynamically reversible regulation. Herein, we report an unprecedented saucer[4]arene-based charge transfer (CT) cocrystal system with dynamically reversible chiral self-sorting synergistically induced by chiral triangular macrocycle and organic vapors. It displays efficient chain length-selective vapochromism toward alkyl ketones due to precise modulation of optical properties by vapor-induced diverse structural transformations. Experimental and theoretical studies reveal that the unique vapochromic behavior is mainly attributed to the formation of homo- or heterochiral self-sorted assemblies with different alkyl ketone guests, which differ dramatically in solid-state superstructures and CT interactions, thus influencing their optical properties. This work highlights the essential role of chiral self-sorting in controlling the functional properties of synthetic supramolecular systems, and the rarely seen controllable chiral self-sorting at the solid-vapor interface deepens the understanding of efficient vapochromic sensors., (© 2024 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Self-assembled DNA nanostructures hold great promise in biosensing, drug delivery and nanomedicine. Nevertheless, challenges like instability and inefficiency in cellular uptake of DNA nanostructures under physiological conditions limit their practical use. To tackle these obstacles, this study proposes a novel approach that integrates the cationic polymer polyethyleneimine (PEI) with DNA self-assembly. The hypothesis is that the positively charged linear PEI can facilitate the self-assembly of DNA nanostructures, safeguard them against harsh conditions and impart them with the cellular penetration characteristic of PEI. As a demonstration, a DNA nanotube (PNT) was successfully synthesized through PEI mediation, and it exhibited significantly enhanced stability and cellular uptake efficiency compared to conventional Mg 2+ -assembled DNA nanotubes. The internalization mechanism was further found to be both clathrin-mediated and caveolin-mediated endocytosis, influenced by both PEI and DNA. To showcase the applicability of this hybrid nanostructure for biomedical settings, the KRAS siRNA-loaded PNT was efficiently delivered into lung adenocarcinoma cells, leading to excellent anticancer effects in vitro . These findings suggest that the PEI-mediated DNA assembly could become a valuable tool for future biomedical applications.

A material platform that excels in both optical second- and third-order nonlinearities at a telecom wavelength is theoretically and experimentally demonstrated. In this TiN-based coupled metallic quantum well structure, electronic subbands are engineered to support doubly resonant inter-subband transitions for an exceptionally high second-order nonlinearity and provide single-photon transitions for a remarkable third-order nonlinearity within the 1400-1600 nm bandwidth. The second-order susceptibility χ (2) reaches 2840 pm/V at 1440 nm, while the Kerr coefficient n 2 arrives at 2.8 × 10 -10  cm 2 /W at 1460 nm. The achievement of simultaneous strong second- and third-order nonlinearities in one material at a telecom wavelength creates opportunities for multi-functional advanced applications in the field of nonlinear optics.

Background: Segmental bone defects of the mandible result in the complete loss of the affected region. We had incorporated the pressure-reducing device (PRD) designs into the customized mandible prostheses (CMP) and conducted a clinical trial to evaluate this approach., Methods: Seven patients were enrolled in this study. We examined the association among the history of radiotherapy, the number of CMP regions, the number of chin regions involved, and CMP exposure., Results: We included five men and two women with an average age of 55 years. We excised tumors with an average weight of 147.8 g and the average weight of the CMP was 68.5 g. No significant difference between the two weights was noted (p = 0.3882). In tuberculosis (TB), chest radiography (CXR) patterns are highly variable, mimicking pneumonia and many other diseases. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of Google teachable machine, a deep neural network-based image classification tool, to develop algorithm for predicting TB probability of CXRs. The training dataset included 348 TB CXRs and 3806 normal CXRs for training TB detection. We also collected 1150 abnormal CXRs and 627 normal CXRs for training abnormality detection. For external validation, we collected 250 CXRs from our hospital. We also compared the accuracy of the algorithm to five pulmonologists and radiological reports. In external validation, the AI algorithm showed areas under the curve (AUC) of 0.951 and 0.975 in validation dataset 1 and 2. The accuracy of the pulmonologists on validation dataset 2 showed AUC range of 0.936-0.995. When abnormal CXRs other than TB were added, AUC decreased in both human readers (0.843-0.888) and AI algorithm (0.828). When combine human readers with AI algorithm, the AUC further increased to 0.862-0.885. The TB CXR AI algorithm developed by using Google teachable machine in this study is effective, with the accuracy close to experienced clinical physicians, and may be helpful for detecting tuberculosis by CXR., (© 2024. Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) are promising materials due to their rich active sites and straightforward synthesis. However, their limited conductivity and electron transfer inefficiency hinder practical applications. This study utilizes a simple one-pot synthesis approach to produce a tungsten-disulfide (WS 2 ) and iron-cobalt Prussian blue analogue composite (WS 2 -PBA), enhancing conductivity and electron transfer rate performance. Through the inclusion of sodium citrate into the solution, the S-edge site concentration of WS 2 increases. This augmentation introduces additional active sites and defects into the catalyst, enhancing its catalytic activity. The effectiveness of the WS 2 -PBA 3D-Origami paper device for lactate detection in sweat is also evaluated for biomedical applications. The device demonstrated a robust relationship between the lactate concentration and current intensity (R 2  = 0.997), with a detection limit of 1.83 mM. Additionally, this platform has successfully detected lactate in clinical sweat, correlating with the high-performance liquid chromatography test results, suggesting promising prospects for clinical diagnosis. Polyurethane (PU) is a promising material for addressing challenges in bone grafting. This study was designed to enhance the bone grafting capabilities of PU by integrating hydroxyapatite (HAp), which is known for its osteoconductive and osteoinductive potential. Moreover, a uniform distribution of HAp in the porous structure of PU increased the effectiveness of bone grafts. PEG/APTES-modified scaffolds were prepared through self-foaming reactions. A uniform pore structure was generated during the spontaneous foaming reaction, and HAp was uniformly distributed in the PU structure (PU15HAp and PU30HAp) during foaming. Compared with the PU scaffolds, the HAp-modified PU scaffolds exhibited significantly greater protein absorption. Importantly, the effect of the HAp-modified PU scaffold on bone repair was tested in a rat calvarial defect model. The microstructure of the newly formed bone was analyzed with microcomputed tomography (μ-CT). Bone regeneration at the defect site was significantly greater in the HAp-modified PU scaffold group than in the PU group. This innovative HAp-modified PU scaffold improves current bone graft materials, providing a promising avenue for improved bone regeneration.

Introduction: The choice between a cementless taper wedge stem and a fit-and-fill stem in total Hip arthroplasty (THA) for various proximal femoral morphological types has not been thoroughly evaluated. This study aimed to compare the risk of stem-related complications between these two stem types in Dorr type A, B, and C femurs., Materials and Methods: From January 2015 through April 2021, we retrospectively reviewed 1995 cementless THA procedures. We stratified all procedures into three groups: Dorr type A (N = 360, 18.0%), B (N = 1489, 74.7%) and C (N = 146, 7.3%). The primary outcome domain was stem-related complications, including stem subsidence ≥ 3 mm, intraoperative fracture, periprosthetic fracture and aseptic stem loosening. We performed multivariate regression analysis to compare the risk of stem-related complication between the two stem types. Other factors included age, sex, body mass index, diagnosis, age-adjusted Charlson comorbidity index, stem alignment and canal fill ratio., Results: The incidence of stem-related complications in the taper wedge and fit-and-fill stem groups was 4.4% (N = 15) and 6.5% (N = 107), respectively. Fit-and-fill stems showed an increased risk of stem-related complications (aOR: 9.903, 95% CI: 1.567-62.597) only in Dorr type C femurs. No significant difference in risk was observed in Dorr type A and B femurs. Furthermore, the canal fill ratio at the lesser trochanter, 2 cm and 7 cm below the lesser trochanter, did not exhibit an association with stem-related complications in any Dorr type., Conclusions: Concerning the risk of stem-related complications, the taper wedge stem was a better choice in Dorr type C femurs. However, there was no difference in risk between the taper wedge stem and fit-and-fill stem in Dorr type A and B femurs., (© 2024. Chiral conjugated polymer has promoted the development of the efficient circularly polarized electroluminescence (CPEL) device, nevertheless, it remains a challenge to develop chiral polymers with high electroluminescence performance. Herein, by the acceptor copolymerization of axially chiral biphenyl emitting skeleton and benzophenone, a pair of axially chiral conjugated polymers namely R-PAC and S-PAC are synthesized. The target polymers exhibit obvious thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) activities with high photoluminescence quantum yields of 81%. Moreover, the chiral polymers display significant circularly polarized luminescence features, with luminescence dissymmetry factor (|g lum |) of nearly 3 × 10 -3 . By using the chiral polymers as emitters, the corresponding circularly polarized organic light-emitting diodes (CP-OLEDs) exhibit efficient CPEL signals with electroluminescence dissymmetry factor |g EL | of 3.4 × 10 -3 and high maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE max ) of 17.8%. Notably, considering both EQE max and |g EL | comprehensively, the device performance of R-PAC and S-PAC is the best among all the reported CP-OLEDs with chiral conjugated polymers as emitters. This work provides a facile approach to constructing chiral conjugated TADF polymers and discloses the potential of axially chiral conjugated luminescent skeletons in architecting high-performance CP-OLEDs., (© 2024 The Authors. Over the past decades, supramolecular luminescent materials (SLMs) have attracted considerable attention due to their dynamic noncovalent interactions, versatile functions, and intriguing applications in many research fields. From construction to application, great efforts and progress have been made in color-tunable SLMs in recent years. In order to realize multicolor luminescence, various design strategies have been proposed. Macrocyclic chemistry, one of the brightest jewels in the field of supramolecular chemistry, has played a crucial role in the construction of stimuli-responsive and emission-tunable SLMs. Moreover, the flexible and tunable conformation and multiple noncovalent complexation sites of the macrocyclic arenes (MAs) afford a new opportunity to create such dynamic smart luminescent materials. Inspired by our reported work on the color-tunable supramolecular crystalline assemblies modulated by the conformation of naphth[4]arene, this Concept provides a summary of the latest developments in the construction of color-tunable MA-based SLMs, accompanied by the various construction strategies. The different electrolyte conditions, e.g., pH value, for driving efficient HER and OER are one of the major issues hindering the aim for electrocatalytic water splitting in a high efficiency. In this regard, seeking durable and active HER electrocatalysts to align the alkaline conditions of the OER is a promising solution. However, the success in this strategy will depend on a fundamental understanding about the HER mechanism at the atomic scale. In this work, we have provided thorough understanding for the electrochemical HER mechanisms in KOH over Ni- and Co-based hollow pyrite microspheres by in operando X-ray spectroscopies and DFT calculations, including NiS 2 , CoS 2 , and Ni 0.5 Co 0.5 S 2 . We discovered that the Ni sites in hollow NiS 2 microspheres were very stable and inert, while the Co sites in hollow CoS 2 microspheres underwent reduction and generated Co metallic crystal domains under HER. The generation of Co metallic sites would further deactivate H 2 evolution due to the large hydrogen desorption free energy (-1.73 eV). In contrast, the neighboring Ni and Co sites in hollow Ni 0.5 Co 0.5 S 2 microspheres exhibited the electronic interaction to elevate the reactivity of Ni and facilitate the stability of Co without structure or surface degradation. The energy barrier in H 2 O adsorption/dissociation was only 0.73 eV, followed by 0.06 eV for hydrogen desorption over the Ni 0.5 Co 0.5 S 2 surface, revealing Ni 0.5 Co 0.5 S 2 as a HER electrocatalyst with higher durability and activity than NiS 2 and CoS 2 in the alkaline medium due to the synergy of neighboring Ni and Co sites. We believe that the findings in our work offer a guidance toward future catalyst design.

A new macrocyclic arene, dibenzofuran[3]arene, was synthesized, which could be conveniently transformed to an O -doped aromatic belt with a rigid ring-shaped structure and deep cavity. Moreover, the O -doped aromatic belt also showed a high HOMO energy and a narrow HOMO-LUMO gap experimentally and theoretically.

The emergence of COVID-19 caused by the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 has prompted a global pandemic that requires continuous research and monitoring. This study presents a design of an electrochemical biosensing platform suitable for the evaluation of monoclonal antibodies targeting the SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid (N) protein. Screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCE) modified with gold nanostructures (AuNS) were applied to design a versatile and sensitive sensing platform. Electrochemical techniques, including electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and square wave voltammetry (SWV), were used to investigate the interactions between immobilised recombinant N (rN) protein and several monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). The electrochemical characterisation of SPCE/AuNS/rN demonstrated a successful immobilisation of rN, enhancing the electron transfer kinetics. Affinity interactions between immobilised rN and four mAbs (mAb-4B3, mAb-4G6, mAb-12B2, and mAb-1G5) were explored. Although mAb-4B3 showed some non-linearity, the other monoclonal antibodies exhibited specific and well-defined interactions followed by the formation of an immune complex. The biosensing platform demonstrated high sensitivity in the linear range (LR) from 0.2 nM to 1 nM with limits of detection (LOD) ranging from 0.012 nM to 0.016 nM for mAb-4G6, mAb-12B2, and mAb-1G5 and limits of quantification (LOQ) values ranging from 0.035 nM to 0.139 nM, as determined by both EIS and SWV methods. These results highlight the system's potential for precise and selective detection of monoclonal antibodies specific to the rN. Digital divide and energy insecurity are pervasive issues among underserved communities, issues that become prounoued during the COVID-19 lockdowns. These disparities underscore the critical need to address them promptly to narrow socio-economic gaps. Our study, based on an online survey of 2,588 respondents in the United Kingdom, explores how concentrated socio-economic disadvantage exacerbates insecurities relating to energy and internet access. Our findings reveal that marginalized groups including low-income households, women, renters, ethnic minorities, and individuals with lower educational attainment are disproportionately affected. Our research extends beyond financial implications to explore the broader social and psychological effects such as trust in utility and internet providers. The study also demonstrates how heightened burdens from energy and internet costs adversely affect the quality of indoor environments, underscoring the interconnected nature of these challenges. A calix[3]carbazole-based cavitand was conveniently synthesized. It was found that the cavitand with adjustable conformation could show excellent complexation with fullerenes C 60 and C 70 in both solution and the solid state. Moreover, the crystal structures of the host-guest complexes show that the cavitand can stack into channel-like architectures, in which fullerenes are orderly arranged inside.

Background: According to the theory of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), all types of body constitutions, except for the Gentleness (ie, the control group in our study), have disease susceptibility and affect the disease development process. This study attempted to investigate the relationship between TCM body constitutions and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)., Methods: This cross-sectional study was based on Taiwan Biobank (TWB) and collected clinical data from 13 941 subjects aged 30 to 70. The results of the study showed that subjects with Yang-deficiency (N = 3161 subjects, odds ratio [OR] = 2.654, 95% CI = 1.740-3.910), Ying-deficiency (N = 3331 subjects, OR = 1.096, 95% CI = 0.627-1.782) or Stasis (N = 2335 subjects, OR = 1.680, 95% CI = 0.654-3.520) were more likely to have IBS., Results: If the subjects with two or more TCM body constitutions: Yang-deficiency + Ying-deficiency (OR = 3.948, 95% CI = 2.742-5.560), Yang-deficiency + Stasis (OR = 2.312, 95% CI = 1.170-4.112), Ying-deficiency + Stasis (OR = 1.851, 95% CI = 0.828-3.567), or Yang-deficiency + Ying-deficiency + Stasis (OR = 3.826, 95% CI = 2.954-4.932) were also prone to IBS., Conclusion: These results confirmed the high correlation between TCM body constitutions and IBS. Lower repetition induces similar postactivation performance enhancement to repetition maximum after a single set of heavy-resistance exercise. J Strength Cond Res 38(5): 848-855, 2024-The study was divided into 2 parts to investigate the acute postactivation performance enhancement (PAPE) responses to lower repetitions at the same load of 87% 1 repetition maximum (1RM) in the upper and lower body. In part 1, 14 athletes performed plyometric push-up (PPU) after the conditioning activity (CA) of bench press (BP). In part 2, 13 athletes performed a countermovement jump (CMJ) after the CA of parallel squat (PS). Subjects completed 3, 4, or 5 repetitions (trials CA-3, CA-4, or CA-5) of BP or PS in randomized and counterbalanced order. The velocity of each movement of the trial was recorded. The PPU or CMJ was tested every 2 minutes after the trial up to 12 minutes to assess the Post-Max and optimal individual PAPE time. The mean velocity of the last movement of BP in CA-5 was significantly lower than that in CA-3 (0.23 ± 0.06 vs. 0.28 ± 0.06 m·second -1 , p < 0.05), and the velocity of PS in CA-4 or CA-5 was significantly lower than that in CA-3 (0.53 ± 0.07 and 0.50 ± 0.05 vs. 0.57 ± 0.07 m·second -1 , p < 0.05). The peak force of PPU and jump height of CMJ at Post-Max in the 3 trials were significantly greater than those at Pre ( p < 0.05). There were no significant differences among trials in the optimal individual PAPE times in either part of the study. Background: The need for thromboprophylaxis in Asian patients after primary total joint arthroplasty (TJA) remains inconclusive. We aimed to identify the risk factors for venous thromboembolism (VTE) events following primary TJA in a Taiwanese population., Methods: From January 2010 to December 2019, we studied 7511 patients receiving primary TJA from a single surgeon. We validated the incidence and risk factors for 30- and 90-day symptomatic VTE events, including age, sex, body mass index (BMI), smoking, medical comorbidities, VTE history, presence of varicose veins, total knee arthroplasty (TKA) vs total hip arthroplasty (THA), unilateral vs bilateral procedure and receipt of VTE prophylaxis, transfusion, and length of stay., Results: The incidence of 30- and 90-day symptomatic VTE events was 0.33% and 0.44%, respectively. Multivariate regression analysis showed that BMI ≥30 (adjusted odds ratio (aOR): 4.862, 95% CI, 1.776-13.313), bilateral TJA procedure (aOR: 2.665, 95% CI, 1.000-7.104), and presence of varicose veins (aOR: 9.946, 95% CI, 1.099-90.024) were associated with increased odds of 30-day symptomatic VTE events. The recent emergence of Janus 2D materials like SnSSe, derived from SnS 2 , reveals unique electrical and optical features, such as asymmetrical electronic structure, enhanced carrier mobility, and tunable bandgap. Previous theoretical studies have discuss the electronic properties of Janus SnSSe, but experimental evidence is limited. This study presents a two-step method for synthesizing Janus SnSSe, involving hydrogen plasma treatment and in situ selenization. Optimized conditions (38 W, 1.5 min, 250 °C) are determined using Raman spectroscopy and AFM analysis. XPS confirmed SnSSe's elemental composition, while KPFM reveals a significant reduction in the work function (from 5.26 down to 5.14 eV) for the first time, indicating asymmetrically induced n-type doping. Finally, field-effect transistors (FETs) derived from SnSSe exhibited significantly enhanced mobility and on-current, as well as n-type doping, compared to SnS 2 -based FETs. The intrinsic helical π-conjugated skeleton makes helicenes highly promising for circularly polarized electroluminescence (CPEL). Generally, carbon helicenes undergo low external quantum efficiency (EQE), while the incorporation of a multi-resonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR-TADF) BN structure has led to an improvement. However, the reported B,N-embedded helicenes all show low electroluminescence dissymmetry factors (g EL ), typically around 1×10 -3 . Therefore, the development of B,N-embedded helicenes with both a high EQE and g EL value is crucial for achieving highly efficient CPEL. Herein, a facile approach to synthesize B,N-embedded hetero[9]helicenes, BN[9]H, is presented. BN[9]H shows a bright photoluminescence with a maximum at 578 nm with a high luminescence dissymmetry factor (|g lum |) up to 5.8×10 -3 , attributed to its inherited MR-TADF property and intrinsic helical skeleton. Furthermore, circularly polarized OLED devices incorporating BN[9]H as an emitter show a maximum EQE of 35.5 %, a small full width at half-maximum of 48 nm, and, more importantly, a high |g EL | value of 6.2×10 -3 . The Q-factor (|EQE×g EL |) of CP-OLEDs is determined to be 2.2×10 -3 , which is the highest among helicene analogues. Photodynamic immunotherapy (PDI) is an innovative approach to cancer treatment that utilizes photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photosensitizers (PSs) to induce immunogenic cell death (ICD). However, currently most commonly used PSs have restricted capabilities to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) via a type-II mechanism under hypoxic environments, which limits their effectiveness in PDI. To overcome this, we propose a novel approach for constructing oxygen independent PSs based on stable organic free-radical molecules. By fine-tuning the characteristics of tris(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl)-methyl (TTM) radicals through the incorporation of electron-donating moieties, we successfully found that TTMIndoOMe could produce substantial amounts of ROS even in hypoxic environments. In vitro experiments showed that TTMIndoOMe could effectively produce O 2 ˙ - , kill tumor cells and trigger ICD. Moreover, in vivo experiments also demonstrated that TTMIndoOMe could further trigger anti-tumor immune response and exhibit a superior therapeutic effect compared with PDT alone. The contents of metals, total carbon, total nitrogen (TN), total organic carbon (TOC), and stable isotope composition (δ 13 C org and δ 15 N) of sediment organic matter (SOM) were investigated to explore the sources and spatial distribution of metals and SOM in the surface sediments (Kaohsiung Port, Taiwan). Results showed that TOC and metals in estuarine sediments are high, gradually decreasing toward the port entrances. The δ 13 C org , δ 15 N, and TOC/TN ratios indicate that SOM comes mainly from terrestrial sources. This study proposes a befitting model between metal pollution and toxicity risk index and SOM sources in port sediments by combining stable isotope composition, correlation matrix, and multiple linear regression analysis. The model indicates that the degree of metal pollution and toxicity risk in sediments are mainly affected by TOC terr content and SOM source. FNDC3B (fibronectin type III domain containing 3B) is highly expressed in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and other cancer types, and fusion genes involving FNDC3B have been identified in HCC and leukemia. Growing evidence suggests the significance of FNDC3B in tumorigenesis, particularly in cell migration and tumor metastasis. However, its regulatory mechanisms remain elusive. In this study, we employed bioinformatic, gene regulation, and protein-DNA interaction screening to investigate the transcription factors (TFs) involved in regulating FNDC3B. Initially, 338 candidate TFs were selected based on previous chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP)-seq experiments available in public domain databases. Through TF knockdown screening and ChIP coupled with Droplet Digital PCR assays, we identified that E2F1 (E2F transcription factor 1) is crucial for the activation of FNDC3B. Overexpression or knockdown of E2F1 significantly impacts the expression of FNDC3B. In conclusion, our study elucidated the mechanistic link between FNDC3B and E2F1. Background: High hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) level predicts hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients with low viral load. The role of longitudinal HBsAg levels in predicting HCC in HBeAg-positive CHB patients remains unknown., Method: HBeAg-positive CHB participants from the REVEAL-HBV cohort with ≥2 HBsAg measurements before HBeAg seroclearance were enrolled. Group-based trajectory modelling identified distinct HBsAg trajectory groups during a median of 11 years of HBeAg-positive status. Cox regression models were applied for investigating independent predictors of HCC and estimating adjusted hazard ratio (HR adj ) with a 95% confidence interval (CI). A p-value less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant., Results: A total of 319 patients were enrolled and classified by HBsAg trajectory patterns as (A) persistently high group (n = 72): HBsAg persistently ≥10 4  IU/mL, and (B) non-stationary group (n = 233): low HBsAg at baseline or declining to <10 4  IU/mL during the follow-up. Group B had higher proportions of abnormal ALT levels, HBV genotype C and basal core mutation than group A (p < 0.05); age at entry and gender were comparable. The annual incidence of HCC in group A and group B were 0.37% and 1.16%, respectively (p = 0.03). In multivariate analysis, age >40 years (HR adj [95% CI] = 4.11 [2.26-7.48]), genotype C (HR adj [95% CI] = 4.39 [1.96-9.81]) and the non-stationary group (HR adj [95% CI] = 3.50 [1.49-8.21]) were independent predictors of HCC. Basal core promoter mutation was the only risk factor of HCC in the persistently high HBsAg group (HR adj [95% CI] = 32.75 [5.41-198.42])., Conclusion: Patients with persistently high HBsAg levels during HBeAg-seropositive stage represent a unique population with low risk of HCC development., (© 2024 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

Purpose : This study aimed to explore the impact of different landing methods on leg movement ability and the relationship between various parameters of leg movement. Methods : This work parameters including stride, contact time, flight time, duty factor, stride angle, vertical stiffness, leg stiffness and peak vertical ground reaction force. Thirty healthy subjects voluntarily participated in this study. In this experiment, each subject was required to perform two tests on a treadmill (using a speed of 10 km/h and 160 spm) (The interval between two experiments is 7 days). In the first test, subjects used RFS. In the second test, FFS was used. A high-speed video camera was used to collect the images and the Kwon3D motion analysis suite was used to process the images in this experiment. Results : The findings of this study revealed that runners employing the forefoot strike FFS method exhibited several favorable characteristics in contrast to those using the rearfoot strike RFS method. These included shorter contact time, longer flight time, reduced duty cycle, increased stride angle and heightened leg stiffness. Additionally, peak vertical ground reaction forces were significantly elevated in females. Conclusions : While rear foot strike RFS demonstrates a notable enhancement in leg stiffness among female runners with low leg stiffness, it concurrently leads to a significant increase in peak vertical ground reaction force and imposes a greater load on the legs. In this study, we demonstrate that palladium-platinum bimetallic nanoparticles (Pd@Pt NPs) as the nanozyme, combined with a multi-layer paper-based analytical device and DNA hybridization, can successfully detect Mycobacterium tuberculosis . This nanozyme has peroxidase-like properties, which can increase the oxidation rate of the substrate. Compared with horseradish peroxidase, which is widely used in traditional detection, the Michaelis constants of Pd@Pt NPs are fourteen and seventeen times lower than those for 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine and H 2 O 2 , respectively. To verify the catalytic efficiency of Pd@Pt NPs, this study will execute molecular diagnosis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis . We chose the IS 6110 fragment as the target DNA and divided the complementary sequences into the capture DNA and reporter DNA. They were modified on paper and Pd@Pt NPs, respectively, to detect Mycobacterium tuberculosis on a paper-based analytical device. With the above-mentioned method, we can detect target DNA within 15 minutes with a linear range between 0.75 and 10 nM, and a detection limit of 0.216 nM. These results demonstrate that the proposed platform (a DNA-nanozyme integrated paper-based analytical device, dnPAD) can provide sensitive and on-site infection prognosis in areas with insufficient medical resources.

Background: Chronic kidney disease-associated pruritus is a distressing symptom and has a far-reaching impact on patients' sleep and quality of life for most patients receiving haemodialysis. Traditional therapies have limited effectiveness., Objectives: This study aimed to invent a self-operated ice roller and evaluate its efficacy in relieving pruritus, sleep quality, and quality of life., Design: This study was experimental with a two-arm parallel group design., Participants: A convenient sampling method was used to recruit 60 patients receiving haemodialysis who reported pruritus (5D-Itch Scale score >5) lasting over 4 weeks in Taiwan. The participants were randomly assigned to one of two groups: the intervention group used an ice roller for 7 days, while the control group received no anti-pruritus treatment., Measurements: This study was experimental with a two-arm parallel group design. The measurement instruments included the 5D-Itch Scale, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and WHOQOL-BREF-Taiwan Version. The analysis of covariance, chi-square, Independent t tests, and partial Eta 2 (η 2 p) were used to analyse the data., Results: The participants' mean age was 62.77 years. Application of the ice roller significantly decreased overall pruritus (p < .05; η 2 p = .09) and distribution of pruritus-associated bodily parts (p = .03; η 2 p = .08). There were no statistically significant differences in sleep quality and related indicators between the experimental and control groups at the study endpoint. In autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) with germline mutations in a PKD1 or PKD2 gene, innumerable cysts develop from tubules, and renal function deteriorates. Second-hit somatic mutations and renal tubular epithelial (RTE) cell death are crucial features of cyst initiation and disease progression. Here, we use established RTE lines and primary ADPKD cells with disease-associated PKD1 mutations to investigate genomic instability and DNA damage responses. We found that ADPKD cells suffer severe chromosome breakage, aneuploidy, heightened susceptibility to DNA damage, and delayed checkpoint activation. Immunohistochemical analyses of human kidneys corroborated observations in cultured cells. DNA damage sensors (ATM/ATR) were activated but did not localize at nuclear sites of damaged DNA and did not properly activate downstream transducers (CHK1/CHK2). ADPKD cells also had the ability to transform, as they achieved high saturation density and formed colonies in soft agar. Our studies indicate that defective DNA damage repair pathways and the somatic mutagenesis they cause contribute fundamentally to the pathogenesis of ADPKD. Acquired mutations may alternatively confer proliferative advantages to the clonally expanded cell populations or lead to apoptosis. Further understanding of the molecular details of aberrant DNA damage responses in ADPKD is ongoing and holds promise for targeted therapies.

Background: Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have garnered significant attention in the field of cell-based therapy owing to their remarkable capabilities for differentiation and self-renewal. However, primary tissue-derived MSCs are plagued by various limitations, including constrained tissue sources, arduous and invasive retrieval procedures, heterogeneous cell populations, diminished purity, cellular senescence, and a decline in self-renewal and proliferative capacities after extended expansion. Addressing these challenges, our study focuses on establishing a robust differentiation platform to generate mesenchymal stem cells derived from induced pluripotent stem cells (iMSCs)., Methods: To achieve this, we used a comprehensive methodology involving the differentiation of induced pluripotent stem cells into MSCss. The process was meticulously designed to ensure the expression of key MSC positive markers (CD73, CD90, and CD105) at elevated levels, coupled with the minimal expression of negative markers (CD34, CD45, CD11b, CD19, and HLA-DR). Moreover, the stability of these characteristics was evaluated across 10th generations., Results: Our findings attest to the success of this endeavor. iMSCs exhibited robust expression of positive markers and limited expression of negative markers, confirming their MSC identity. Importantly, these characteristics remained stable even up to the 10th generation, signifying the potential for sustained use in therapeutic applications. Furthermore, our study demonstrated the successful differentiation of iMSCs into osteocytes, chondrocytes, and adipocytes, showcasing their multilineage potential., Conclusion: In conclusion, the establishment of induced pluripotent stem cell-derived mesenchymal stem cells (iMSCs) presents a significant advancement in overcoming the limitations associated with primary tissue-derived MSCs. The remarkable stability and multilineage differentiation potential exhibited by iMSCs offer a strong foundation for their application in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering. Background: Due to the recurrent nature of uraemic pruritus among patients receiving haemodialysis, self-care can offer patients a means to ameliorate this symptom. Qualitative data on self-care of uraemic pruritus are limited., Objective: To explore how patients on haemodialysis perceive uraemic pruritus, implement self-care practice, and appraise the outcome of self-caring uraemic pruritus., Design: The Common Sense Model of Self-Regulation guided the study design., Participants and Approaches: Data were collected through face-to-face interviews with 30 patients receiving haemodialysis who were aged from 50 to 89 years and had had uraemic pruritus for more than 6 weeks. Interviews were audio recorded, and verbatim transcriptions of interviews were analysed., Findings: Our participants generally used life-related analogies to describe uraemic pruritus, which they reviewed as a momentarily controllable symptom with an endless timeline. Most participants reported limited knowledge of the aetiology and multifaceted impacts of uraemic pruritus on their daily life and emotional status. The impacts on daily life included decreased zest for activities and sleep disturbances. Physical management of uraemic pruritus involved daily substance use and interventions employed during pruritic episodes. Psychological managements involved preferences for indoor activities and a fatalistic outlook. Unsatisfactory outcomes and psychological burdens from self-care practice were reported., Conclusions: Life experiences shape symptom presentation and self-care practice in patients on haemodialysis. The modalities for self-caring for uraemic pruritus are diverse but not remarkably effective. Performing self-care tasks places a substantial burden on patients.
