Background: This study aimed to assess the association between the risk of colorectal cancer (CRC) and exposure to mood stabilizers, antidepressants, and antipsychotics in patients with affective disorders., Methods: This nested case-control study used data from the National Health Insurance Database of Taiwan collected between 2001 and 2011. All participants in this study had affective disorders. Then, 1209 patients with CRC and 1:10 matched controls were identified based on their demographic and clinical characteristics. A logistic regression model adjusted for demographic and clinical characteristics was used to determine the risk of developing CRC after exposure to psychotropic drugs., Results: Among patients with affective disorders, exposure to mood stabilizers (reported as odds ratio; 95% confidence interval; 0.75; 0.57-0.98), antidepressants (0.83; 0.70-0.97), second-generation antipsychotics (0.67; 0.52-0.86), and first-generation antipsychotics (0.65; 0.52-0.81) were associated with a reduced risk of CRC compared to patients who were not exposed. When considering specific drugs, carbamazepine (0.34; 0.12-0.95), valproic acid (0.66; 0.46-0.95), gabapentin (0.44; 0.20-0.99), fluoxetine (0.82; 0.68-0.99), paroxetine (0.63; 0.45-0.87), and venlafaxine (0.72; 0.55-0.95) were associated with a lower risk of CRC., Conclusion: Exposure to psychotropic drugs in patients with affective disorders is associated with a lower risk of CRC compared to those who were not exposed. Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) has great clinical importance because it has the highest disability burden of all depressive conditions. We investigated the prevalence of TRD and identified the risk and protective factors associated with antidepressant resistance among adult patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). A total of 176 132 adult patients with MDD were selected from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database between 2001 and 2010 and followed for 1 year. TRD was defined as nonresponse to at least two antidepressants, and treatment-resistant tendency was defined as nonresponse to at least the first antidepressant. General physical condition measured by the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI), psychiatric comorbidities, and economic status were assessed. Only 2.6% (n = 4608) of the adults with MDD met the TRD criteria, but 26.4% (n = 46 491) were classified as having treatment-resistant tendency. The following psychiatric comorbidities were related to TRD: anxiety disorders [odds ratio (OR): 1.88], substance use disorders (OR: 1.73), alcohol use disorders (OR: 1.27), and personality disorders (OR: 2.12). In addition, a more severe physical condition (higher CCI) increased the likelihood of TRD (OR: 1.12). Single-pixel imaging (SPI) stands out in computational imaging for its simplicity and adaptability, yet its performance has been hampered by artifacts from translational motion. Existing solutions heavily rely on accurate motion modeling, requiring additional hardware and computational costs. In this Letter, we propose translational motion-agnostic SPI (TMA-SPI), a novel, to the best of our knowledge, single-object SPI framework agnostic to arbitrary translational motion. Our dual-domain optimization method leverages the translation invariance property of the amplitude spectrum in the Fourier domain, combined with the spatially finite and nonnegative constraints in the image domain, to produce a clear image of the moving object without any motion estimation or compensation. Through both simulation and the deployment of a real imaging prototype, we demonstrate its superior performance over the conventional SPI method. Our framework is expected to extend the applicability of SPI, offering significant improvements for dynamic sensing applications.

Background: This study investigated all-cause and suicide mortality rates in adolescents and young adults following an initial psychiatric admission to elucidate the long-term outcomes for this vulnerable group by focusing on the risks associated with various psychiatric diagnostic categories., Methods: This study involved 9762 adolescents and young adults discharged from their first psychiatric admission and matched 1:1 with 9762 individuals discharged following a diagnosis of appendicitis on the basis of birth year and sex by using Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. Both stratified (model 1) and standard (model 2) Cox regression analyses were conducted to assess variations in all-cause and suicide mortality between the groups., Results: Over the 15-year follow-up period, the adolescents and young adults discharged from their first psychiatric admission exhibited an approximately 3-fold increased risk of death from any cause (hazard ratio [HR]: 2.97 in model 1, 2.83 in model 2) and an approximately ten times higher risk of suicide (11.13 in model 1, 9.23 in model 2) compared with those discharged with a diagnosis of appendicitis. Those discharged with alcohol use disorder or major depressive disorder exhibited higher hazard ratios for both all-cause and suicide compared with the reference group., Conclusions: The findings reveal a considerable risk of all-cause and suicide mortality in adolescents and young adults following discharge from their first psychiatric admission. Background: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a kind of immune disease mediated by IgE. We are intrigued by the potential role of DEK proto-oncogene (DEK) in inflammation-related diseases. We investigated the effects and mechanisms of DEK in treating AR, aiming to identify potential new treatment targets for AR., Methods: The AR mouse model was induced by house dust mite (HDM) (1 mg/mL). HNEpCs stimulated by HDM (1 mg/mL) were pretreated for 24 h with or without DEK lentivirus. The effect of DEK knockout or knockdown on AR was evaluated in vitro and in vivo using western blotting, ELISA, flow cytometry, real-time quantitative PCR, immunohistochemistry, HE staining, PAS staining, Diff staining, and immunofluorescence., Results: After DEK knockdown, the inflammatory response of AR mice was reduced. In addition, DEK deletion mitigated nasal tissue damage and mitochondrial division. Our further studies showed that DEK deletion or inhibition led to the down-regulation of RhoA activity and decreased phosphorylation of Ezrin and Drp1 proteins, and inhibited mitochondrial division. Overall, DEK deficiency mitigated AR by down-regulating RhoA/Ezrin/Drp1 pathway activity., Conclusion: DEK alleviates AR through RhoA/Ezrin/Drp1 signaling pathway, which provides a new perspective for developing improved therapies and understanding the pathogenesis of AR., (© 2024 The Author(s). The ADA testing strategy for protein therapeutics was established almost two decades ago when assay methodologies were rudimentary, and serious immunogenicity-related safety issues had recently been observed with some biotherapeutics. The current testing paradigm employs multiple tiers and stringent cut points to minimize false negatives, reflecting a conservative stance towards ADA analysis. The development of highly sensitive ADA assay platforms and technologies such as humanized or fully human monoclonal antibody (mAb) drugs has put the traditional, resource-intensive 3-tiered testing approach under scrutiny. ADA data from clinical studies for three different mAb programs were re-assessed to explore the feasibility of a simplified 1-tiered ADA testing strategy with a 1% false positive cut point versus the traditional 3-tiered approach. The analysis demonstrated moderate to strong correlations between screening results (signal-to-noise, S/N) and those of confirmation and titer results, with the vast majority of samples (~ 97%) across all studies having the same ADA positive/negative classification with either testing approach. Furthermore, at the subject level, over 92% had the same ADA category (pre-existing, treatment-emergent, treatment-boosted) under both testing approaches. The re-categorized subjects had low titer ADA responses with no observed clinical implications on pharmacokinetics, efficacy, or safety. Finally, the treatment-emergent ADA incidences were comparable between the 1-tiered and 3-tiered approaches. The results demonstrate that the 1-tiered testing strategy is suitable for ADA assessment in these programs and is likely more widely applicable. Objective: The current study used a retrospective study design to investigate the association between age of onset of severe mental disorders in offspring and the likelihood of diagnoses of parental mental disorder., Method: We enrolled 212,333 people with severe mental disorder, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder (BD), or major depressive disorder (MDD) and 2,123,329 controls matched for age, sex, and demographics from the National Health Insurance Database of Taiwan. Poisson regression models were used to examine the likelihood of diagnoses of five mental disorders in their parents compared to the parents of the controls (reported as odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval), including schizophrenia, BD, MDD, alcohol use disorder (AUD), and substance use disorder (SUD). The study cohort was classified into child-onset, adolescent-onset, and adult-onset groups according to the onset of severe mental disorders in the offspring., Result: The parents of people with child-, adolescent-, and adult-onset schizophrenia (OR range: 1.73-9.08, all p < 0.05) or BD (OR range: 1.97-8.17, all p < 0.05) were more likely to be diagnosed with schizophrenia, BD, MDD, AUD, and substance use disorder (SUD) than controls except for AUD in the child-onset group. However, the parents of people with child-, adolescent-, and adult-onset depressive disorder were more likely to be diagnosed with schizophrenia, BD, MDD, AUD, and SUD (OR range: 1.82-4.76, all p < 0.05) than controls. Cryoablation is a valuable treatment for liver cancer. To investigate the effect of KCl solution on the immunological response post cryoablation, we created a tumor-bearing mice model by subcutaneously implanting Hepal-6 cells in adult Balb/c mice. Subsequently, the mice were randomly assigned to three groups: group A (sham cryoablation), group B (cryoablation), and group C (cryoablation plus KCl solution). Mice were sacrificed on days 0, 7, and 14 post-treatment. Immune cell populations were assessed using flow cytometry. Blood samples were analyzed for serum IL-4, HSP70, and TGF-β1 levels with ELISA assays. Ablated tissues stained with immunohistochemistry were utilized to evaluate Ki67 expression at the margins of the ablation site. Our findings revealed higher HSP70 expression levels in groups B and C compared to group A. Cryoablation triggered an immune response, which was enhanced by KCl. On days 0, 7, and 14, the percentages of CD4 + T cells, CD8 + T cells, and NK cells in the spleen of group C were significantly increased compared with groups A and B. Additionally, the Th1/Th2 ratio was significantly increased in group C. Serum TGF-β1 expression was elevated after cryoablation, but KCl solution reduced the high TGF-β1 expression after cryoablation and decreased the invasiveness of cancer cells. Finally, the proliferative activity of untreated tumor tissue was significantly reduced in group C compared to groups A and B. Objectives: Previous studies have demonstrated poor oral hygiene in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, the association between ADHD and periodontitis is still unclear., Methods: In all, 16,211 adolescents with ADHD and 162,110 age- and sex-matched controls participated in the study between 2001 and 2011. To identify the occurrence of periodontitis, the participants were followed up till the end of 2011. Confounding factors, including smoking, diabetes, and depressive disorder, were assessed and adjusted in the Cox regression models., Results: Adolescents with ADHD ( HR : 2.29) were more likely to develop periodontitis later in life than controls. We additionally observed the beneficial effect of atomoxetine ( HR : 0.42) on the periodontitis risk among adolescents with ADHD. However, this finding should be interpreted cautiously given the small sample ( n  = 290) of children taking atomoxetine in the present study., Conclusions: ADHD is an independent risk factor for subsequent periodontitis development. Oral health should be closely monitored in adolescents with ADHD. In this study, we examined the risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with borderline personality disorder (BPD). A total of 4649 AYAs with BPD and 46,490 age-, sex-, and socioeconomic-matched controls without BPD were enrolled from the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan from 2001 to 2009 and were followed up until the end of 2011. Participants who contracted any STI during the follow-up period were identified. Cox regression analysis was conducted to examine the risk of contracting any STI among both patients and controls. A total of 4649 AYAs with BPD and 46,490 age-, sex-, and socioeconomic-matched controls without BPD were enrolled from the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan from 2001 to 2009 and were followed up until the end of 2011. Participants who contracted any STI (ICD-9-CM code 042, 091-097, 087.11, 078.8, 078.88, 131, and 054.1) during the follow-up period were identified. Cox regression and sub-analyses stratified by sex, age, psychiatric comorbidity subgroups, and psychotropic medication usage were conducted to assess STI risk. AYAs with BPD were at a higher risk of contracting any STI (hazard ratio [HR] = 50.79, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 33.45-77.11) in comparison with controls, including HIV, syphilis, genital warts, gonorrhea, chlamydia, trichomoniasis, and genital herpes. The association of BPD with an increased risk of any STI was prevalent in both sexes, adolescents, and young adult patients. BPD with or without psychiatric comorbid subgroup were all associated with an elevated risk of contracting any STI relative to the control group. AYAs with BPD are highly susceptible to contracting STIs. Background: The risks of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and teenage pregnancy in the offspring of parents with schizophrenia remain unknown., Methods: From the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database, 5,850 individuals born between 1980 and 1999 having any parent with schizophrenia and 58,500 age-, sex-, income- and residence-matched controls without parents with severe mental disorders were enrolled in 1996 or on their birthdate and followed up to the end of 2011. Those who contracted any STI or became pregnant in adolescence during the follow-up period were identified., Results: Cox regression analyses demonstrated that offspring of parents with schizophrenia (hazard ratio [HR]: 1.21, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.02-1.44), especially daughters (HR: 1.30, 95% CI: 1.06-1.58), were more likely to contract any STI later in life than the control comparisons. In addition, daughters of parents with schizophrenia had an elevated risk of being pregnant in their adolescence (HR: 1.47, 95% CI: 1.29-1.67) compared with those having no parents with severe mental disorders., Discussion: The positive relationship between parental schizophrenia and offspring STIs and teenage pregnancy necessitates clinicians and public health officers to closely monitor the sexual health in the offspring of parents with schizophrenia so that optimal and prompt preventive measures can be taken in the at-risk group., Competing Interests: Declarations. Schizophrenia is highly comorbid with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD); both conditions share numerous pathophysiological etiologies. We, thus, examined the risk of mental disorders in the parents of probands with schizophrenia, OCD, or both conditions. Between 2001 and 2011, we enrolled a nationwide cohort of 69,813 patients with schizophrenia, OCD, or both. The control cohort included 698,130 individuals matched for demographics. Poisson regression models were employed to examine the risk of six mental disorders in their parents, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depressive disorder, OCD, alcohol use disorder, and substance use disorder. We stratified patients into schizophrenia-only, OCD-only, and dual-diagnosis groups, and the dual-diagnosis group was further divided into schizophrenia-first, OCD-first, and simultaneously diagnosed groups. Compared with controls, the schizophrenia, OCD, and dual-diagnosis groups had higher risks for the six mental disorders in their parents (range of odds ratio [OR] 1.50-7.83). The sub-analysis of the dual-diagnosis group showed that the schizophrenia-first, OCD-first, and simultaneously diagnosed groups had higher odds for schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depressive disorder, and OCD (range of OR 1.64-6.45) in their parents than the control group; the simultaneously diagnosed and OCD-first diagnosed groups had a higher odds of parental substance use disorder, while the schizophrenia-first diagnosed group had a higher odds of parental alcohol use disorder. The interrelationship between OCD and schizophrenia is linked to bipolar disorder, depressive disorder, alcohol use disorder, and substance use disorder. Background and Objectives: Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) T-scores have been shown to predict fragility fractures in population-based studies. Recently, a novel MRI-based vertebral bone quality (VBQ) score has been proposed, showing better predictability for fragility fractures compared with DXA T-scores. The aim of this study was to explore the correlation between VBQ scores and DXA T-scores and to determine the impact of VBQ scores on the risk of subsequent fragility fractures after cement augmentation for osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture (OVCF)., Methods: Between January and December 2018, 251 consecutive patients who received cement augmentation for OVCF were included in the study. VBQ scores were calculated using noncontrast T1-weighted MRI. Correlations between VBQ and T-scores were assessed. Patients were divided into 2 groups based on the presence or absence of subsequent fragility fractures after cement augmentation: (1) no Subsequent fracture group and (2) subsequent fracture group. Comparisons between the groups were conducted, and risk factors of subsequent fractures were evaluated using multivariable logistic regression analysis., Results: Of the patients, 42 (16.7%) experienced subsequent fractures after cement augmentation. The VBQ score showed moderate correlations with the T-score of the hip (r = -0.523, P < .001) and the T-score of the lumbar spine (r = -0.383, P < .001). The subsequent fracture group had a significantly higher VBQ score (4.02 ± 0.56 vs 3.52 ± 0.62, P < .001) and a worse T-score of hip (-3.06 ± 1.28 vs -2.42 ± 0.98, P = .004). Infrared (IR) radiation thermography is extensively utilized in diverse fields due to its non-contact capability. Nevertheless, its effectiveness is often compromised by the significant emissivity variations among different objects, limiting its application to specific setups or focused object types. Colorimetric thermography is introduced as an alternative emissivity-independent method of radiation thermometry. This technique involves measuring radiance across two or more spectral bands and calculating the object's temperature based on the signal ratio, thereby mitigating emissivity effects under certain conditions. However, this method has the trade-off of necessitating bulky optical systems, complex filter imaging configurations, and sensor structures. To meet the requirements of IR thermography for compact structure, lightweight design, and customizability, a dual-band metalens is developed for the IR colorimetric thermography. The central wavelengths targeted are 9.5 and 12.5 µm. The dual-band IR imaging by the fabricated dual-band metalens is demonstrated, and the colorimetric thermography of low-emissivity objects is performed without presetting emissivity values. This approach significantly eliminates measurement errors associated with emissivity by an average of 50.16% across a temperature range of 60-180 °C. Aim: Bipolar disorder (BD) and major depression have been associated with an increased risk of developing Parkinson's disease (PD); however, few studies have directly compared the risk of PD development between patients with BD and major depression while considering relevant risk factors and psychotropic medications., Methods: Using the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database, 21,186 patients with BD, 21,188 patients with major depression, and 42,374 controls were enrolled between 2001 and 2009, and followed until the end of 2011. Individuals who developed PD during the follow-up period were identified. Cox regression models were used to analyze the hazard ratio (HR) of developing PD, adjusting for demographic factors, comorbidities, and psychotropic medication usage., Results: Both patients with BD [HR 8.63, 95% confidence interval (CI) 6.35-11.72] and those with major depression (HR 5.68, 95% CI 4.15-7.78) had an elevated risk of subsequent PD compared to the controls. Patients with BD were associated with a 51% increased risk of subsequent PD compared with patients with major depression. Long-term treatment with antiepileptic mood stabilizers was associated with increased PD risk among patients with late-onset BD and high Charlson comorbidity index scores. Lithium was not associated with an increased PD risk., Conclusions: The study highlights an elevated PD risk in patients with BD and major depression compared to the controls, with BD patients at highest risk. Aim: Evidence suggests an association between maternal hypothyroidism and risk of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in offspring. We examined the risk of ASD and ADHD in individuals with congenital hypothyroidism (CHT)., Methods: A nationwide population-based cohort study enrolled a total of 1260 children younger than 12 years with a confirmed diagnosis of CHT and no prior diagnosis of any neurodevelopmental disorders, selected from the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan between 1998 to 2013. In addition, 12,600 controls matched for sex, age, and residence were selected. Cox proportional hazards analysis was used to investigate the association among CHT, ASD, and ADHD., Results: Children with CHT were associated with a higher incidence of ASD (7.1‰ vs 1.3‰, P < 0.001) and ADHD (39.7‰ vs 18.7‰, P < 0.001) than the control group. Cox regression analyses demonstrated that children with CHT were associated with elevated risks of ASD (hazard ratio [HR], 4.72 [95% confidence interval (CI), 2.08-10.70]) and ADHD (HR, 2.03 [95% CI, 1.49-2.77]), after adjusting for demographic data and family history of major psychiatric disorders, compared with the control group., Conclusion: Children with CHT were associated with approximately a two-fold increased risk of ADHD and a four-fold increased risk of ASD than the control group. Background: Children with dental caries are treated with stainless steel metal crowns (SSC), but the aesthetics and precision still need to be improved. Currently, both 3D-printed resin crowns (PRC) and computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacture (CAD/CAM) resin crowns (CRC) meet the clinical requirements for crown applications in terms of strength, production time, cost, and aesthetics., Aim: This study replaced SSC with customized resin crowns by 3D printing and CAD/CAM., Design: In this study, PRC, CRC, and SSC were used for incisor and molar restorations, and 60 crowns were made with 10 for each group. The fabrication efficiency, surface characteristics, marginal fit, and stability of the two different crowns were evaluated., Results: PRC and CRC show superior color and surface characteristics, though production times are longer (5.3-12.4 times and 3.3-9.1 times, respectively) than for SSC (p < .05). They, however, can be completed within 80 min. Edge gaps for PRC and CRC are significantly lower (13.0-19.2 times and 13.0-13.7 times) than for SSC (p < .05). Background: The optimal surgical technique for treating tibial plateau fractures remains controversial. This study aimed to compare the outcomes of arthroscopy-assisted reduction and internal fixation (ARIF) to those of open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) in treating tibial plateau fractures., Methods: This systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to compare surgical outcomes between ARIF versus ORIF for patients with tibial plateau fractures. Relevant studies, comprising randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and non-RCTs, were identified through searches in Cochrane CENTRAL, PubMed, and Embase databases. Risk of bias assessments were conducted using the revised Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for RCTs (RoB 2.0), Newcastle Ottawa scales for non-RCTs, and Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist for case series studies. Data synthesis utilized a random-effects model meta-analysis. The primary outcome assessed was functional outcomes, with complications considered as secondary outcomes., Results: There were fifteen studies (one RCT and fourteen non-RCTs) included in this study, comprising a total of 969 participants (548 in the ARIF group and 421 in the ORIF group). Although patients in the ARIF group showed a trend towards better functional outcomes compared to the ORIF group, the difference was not statistically significant (Hospital for special surgery score, mean difference (MD) = 5.13, 95% confidence interval (CI)=-1.67 to 11.92, I²=83%; Knee society score, MD = 5.84, 95% CI=-1.18 to 12.86, I²=74%). No significant differences were noted in infection, stiffness, DVT, and overall complications between two groups. The ARIF group included ten case series studies with a total of 302 patients. The pooled mean Rasmussen Radiological Score was 16.59 (95% CI, 15.72 to 17.50), and the pooled mean Rasmussen Clinical Score was 27.38 (95% CI, 26.45 to 28.33)., Conclusion: The findings of this study reveal no significant difference in clinical outcomes and complication rates between ARIF and ORIF. Additionally, this study found that the complication rate for patients undergoing ARIF falls within previously reported ranges. Background: Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection can lead to multiple comorbidities in women, including mental health problems. However, few studies have examined the association between maternal HPV infection and risk of neurodevelopmental disorders in their offspring., Aim: We aimed to investigate the association between maternal HPV infection and risk of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or autism spectrum disorder (ASD) among their offspring., Design and Methods: Data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database were used for analysis. Offspring of mothers with HPV infection were identified as the index group, and a demographic-matched group (offspring of mothers without HPV infection) was selected as the controls. The primary outcome was risk of ADHD or ASD. Cox regression models with multiple adjustments were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% of confidence intervals (CIs)., Results: We included 7,762 individuals in the index group and 31,048 in the control group. After adjusting for potential confounding factors, the index group had a higher risk of ADHD (HR: 1.39, 95% CI: 1.15-1.67) than the controls. Importantly, the risk remained significance when HPV infection was diagnosed either before (HR: 1.29, 95% CI: 1.05-1.59) or during pregnancy (HR: 1.79, 95% CI: 1.28-2.51). No increased risk of ASD was identified in the index group compared to the control group., Conclusions: This study highlights the importance of preventing and treating HPV infection during and before pregnancy. Background: Upper respiratory infections (URIs) are common infectious diseases worldwide. Accurate and timely assessment of the disease burden of URIs is crucial for governments to develop comprehensive prevention and control strategies, and to allocate and utilize healthcare resources more efficiently., Methods: For URIs in Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2021 database, age-standardized incidence rates (ASIR), age-standardized prevalence rates (ASPR), age-standardized mortality rates (ASMR), disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), and case numbers for incidence, prevalence, deaths, and DALYs across the globe, five socio-demographic index (SDI) regions, 21 geographical regions, and 204 countries and territories were provided and analyzed. Trends from 1990 to 2021 were described using the average annual percentage change (AAPC), and future URIs burden was projected with a Bayesian age-period-cohort (BAPC) model., Results: From 1990 to 2021, there was a significant decline in global ASIR (APCC = -289.86, 95% confidence interval [ CI ]: -298.59 to -281.12), ASPR (AAPC = -4.04, 95% CI : -4.16 to -3.92), ASMR (AAPC = -0.02, 95 % CI : -0.02 to -0.03) and age-standardized DALY rate (AAPC = -0.75, 95% CI : -0.76 to -0.74). The ASIR, ASPR, ASMR, and age-standardized DALY rate were high in elderly for both males and females, and both genders. Similarly, the number of incident cases, prevalence cases, deaths, and DALY cases for URIs was highest in children under five years. The ASMR and age-standardized DALY rate exhibited a negative correlation with SDI across 204 countries and territories in 2021. The ASIR and ASPR for URIs will show an upward trend from 2022 to 2050, while ASMR and age-standardized DALY rate are expected to decline. Low birth weight for gestation remains the leading contributor to deaths related to URIs., Conclusion: Despite the global decline in URIs burden, significant challenges remain among the elderly population. Background: The circadian variation pattern of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) occurred in Chinese community including both community healthcare centres and primary hospitals remains unknown. This study analysed the circadian variation of SCA in the Chinese community., Methods: Data between 2018 and 2022 from the remote ECG diagnosis system of Xinhua Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine were analysed to examine the circadian rhythm of SCA, stratified by initial shockable (ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation) versus non-shockable (asystole or pulseless electrical activity) rhythm., Results: Among 10 210 cases of SCA, major cases (8736, 85.6%) were non-shockable and 1474 (14.4%) cases were shockable. The circadian rhythm of SCA was as follows: peak time was from 08:00 to 11:59 (30.1%), while deep valley was from 00:00 to 03:59 (7.5%). The proportions of events by non-shockable and shockable events were similar and both reached their peak from 08:00 to 11:59, with a percentage of 29.0% and 36.4%, respectively. Multivariable analysis showed that the relative risk of shockable compared with non-shockable arrests was lower between 00:00 and 03:59 (adjusted OR (aOR): 0.72, 95% CI: 0.54 to 0.97, p=0.028) and 04:00 to 07:59 (aOR: 0.60, 95% CI: 0.46 to 0.79, p<0.001), but higher between 08:00 and 11:59 (aOR: 1.34, 95% CI: 1.09 to 1.64, p=0.005)., Conclusions: In Chinese community, there is a distinct circadian rhythm of SCA, regardless of initial rhythms. Insecticide resistance in Plutella xylostella (Linnaeus) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) is a major constraint on the global production of cruciferous crops. For effective management of insecticide resistance, it is necessary to develop a molecular detection tool for predicting insecticide resistance levels based on the mutation frequency of target sites. In this study, a susceptible strain (SHggt) of P. xylostella was subjected to chlorantraniliprole and tetraniliprole selection under laboratory conditions to obtain the CHLSel and TETSel strains, respectively, to determine their resistance development, cross-resistance and mutation frequencies of the P. xylostella ryanodine receptor (PxRyR). In addition, the tetraniliprole resistance and the mutation frequencies of the PxRyR from 7 field populations were evaluated. Continuous selection over 30 generations resulted in resistance ratios (RRs) of 7,073.2-fold and 6,971.0-fold for the CHLSel and TETSel strains, respectively, and thousandfold increases in cross-resistance to unexposed diamides, e.g., cyantraniliprole and flubendiamide, were observed. For the field populations, three out of seven populations have developed more than thousandfold resistance to tetraniliprole. Among the three investigated target site mutations in PxRyR, only I4790K was detected in both laboratory-selected strains. However, 2 mutations, I4790K and G4946E, were detected in field populations. A positive correlation between RRs and K allele frequencies was observed in the laboratory-selected/relaxed strains and field populations of P. xylostella. These results suggest a possible link between the development of anthranilic diamide resistance and the frequency of the PxRyR I4790K mutation, which can be used to develop effective strategies for diamide resistance management in P. xylostella., (© The Author(s) 2024. The alkylation of nucleophiles is among the most fundamental and well-developed transformations in chemistry. However, to achieve selective alkylation of complex substrates remains a nontrivial task. We report herein a general and selective alkylation method without using strong acids, bases, or metals. In this method, the readily available phosphinites/phosphites, in combination with ethyl acrylate, function as effective alkylating agents. Various nucleophilic groups, including alcohols, phenols, carboxylic acids, imides, and thiols can be alkylated. This method can be applied in the late-stage alkylation of natural products and pharmaceutical agents, achieving chemo- and site-selective modification of complex substrates. Experimental studies indicate the relative reactivity of a nucleophile depends on its acidity and its steric environment. The concurrent rise in the prevalence of autism and youth suicide has drawn public health and professional attention. The renaissance of psychedelics in psychiatry occurred in the early 21st century and may suggest a hope for the therapeutic effect of psychedelics in autism and suicide. The psychedelics' molecular entities are the compounds that modulate the serotoninergic and glutamatergic systems, which play a crucial role in the pathomechanisms underlying autism and suicide. This systematic review comprehensively discussed the prevalence trends of autism and youth suicide globally and in Taiwan and discussed an association between autism and suicidality based on the 21st century clinical and preclinical literature. Furthermore, this review proposed a possible neurobiological connection between autism, suicide, and psychedelics. Thalamocortical connectivity is associated with cognitive and affective processing. The role of thalamocortical connectivity in the pathomechanism of treatment-resistant depression (TRD) remains unclear. This study included 48 patients with TRD and 48 healthy individuals. We investigated thalamocortical connectivity by performing resting-state functional MRI with the bilateral thalamus as the seed. In addition, patients with TRD were evaluated using the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS). Compared with the healthy individuals, the patients with TRD exhibited increased functional connectivity (FC) of the thalamus with the insula and superior temporal cortex and reduced the FC of the thalamus with the anterior paracingulate cortex and cerebellum crus II. Our study may support the crucial role of thalamocortical dysconnectivity in the TRD pathomechanism. However, the small sample size may limit the statistical power. Background/purpose: In Taiwan, there are very few dental radiology curricula in medical radiation education system. This study assessed the participants' learning outcomes after finishing the dental radiology course for the continuing education of medical radiation technologists in Taiwan., Materials and Methods: This study used the questionnaire survey to evaluate the participants' learning outcomes after finishing the dental radiology course for the continuing education of medical radiation technologists in Taiwan., Results: In this study, 85 participants filled out the questionnaires completely after finishing the dental radiology course. The majority of participants agreed that dental radiology courses were rare in the medical radiation school curricula and the continuing education courses of medical radiation technologists. Moreover, most of participants found this course to be helpful in raising their basic knowledge about the dental radiology, their attitude towards the dental radiology, and their interest in further learning of the dental radiology. They were satisfied with the courses. The degree of agreement for each question was high with all the mean scores for each question being between 3.87 and 4.61. The numbers (rates) of respondents who answered as agree were between 58 (68.24%) and 84 (98.82%)., Conclusion: The dental radiology course for the continuing education of medical radiation technologists is found to increase the participants' basic knowledge about the dental radiology, and their awareness and understanding of the radiation protection in dental radiography. Background: Inhibitory control function and proinflammatory cytokines play a role in the pathomechanisms underlying major affective disorders and suicidal behavior. However, the distinct or interactive effects of major affective disorders and suicidal symptom severity on inhibitory control function and proinflammatory cytokines remain unclear., Methods: This study included 287 patients with bipolar disorder, 344 with major depressive disorder, and 169 healthy controls. We categorized the participants into 3 groups based on Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) item 10 (suicidal symptoms) score: 0, 2 or 3, and ≥4. The participants completed the go/no-go task and the measurements for C-reactive protein (CRP) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) levels., Results: Errors in the go/no-go task were associated with suicidality (P = .040), regardless of the severity of suicidal symptoms and diagnosis. An elevated CRP level was especially associated with a Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale item 10 score ≥4 (P = .001). An increased TNF-α level could distinguish bipolar disorder from major depressive disorder (P < .001)., Discussion: Our study indicated the distinct effects of major affective disorder diagnosis and suicide symptom severity on inhibitory control function and CRP and TNF-α levels. Although several studies have examined a diagnostic conversion from major depressive disorder (MDD) to bipolar disorder (BD), only a few studies specifically focused on adolescents and young adults who are at the peak ages of BD onset. Data from participants (N = 130,793) aged 10-29 years who were diagnosed with MDD were extracted from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. We applied demographic analyses, survival analysis, Aalen Johansen curves, and Cox regression, investigating the diagnostic conversion rate and factors that were most or less predictive of conversion. Among the adolescents and young adults with MDD, the number of participant conversion subsample is 14,187 and the conversion rate was 13.80% (95% confidence interval: 13.54-14.06%) during the 11-year follow-up. The conversion rate was highest in the first year (4.50%; 4.39-4.61%) and decreased over time. The significant predictors were younger age of diagnosis with MDD (p < 0.001), moderate and high antidepressant resistance (p < 0.001), obesity (p < 0.001), psychiatric comorbidities (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, substance use disorder, and cluster B and C personality disorder, all p < 0.001), a family history of mental disorders (schizophrenia and mood disorders, all p < 0.05), lower monthly income (p < 0.001), and more mental health visits to the clinic each year (p < 0.001). A composite of demographic characteristics, antidepressant resistance, physical and psychiatric comorbidities, and family history significantly predicted diagnostic conversion from MDD to BD (area under the curve = 0.795, p < 0.001). Whether proinflammatory cytokine dysregulation and cognitive dysfunction are associated with suicidal symptoms in adolescents and young adults with major depressive disorder (MDD) remains uncertain. We assessed the cognitive function and proinflammatory cytokine levels of 43 and 51 patients aged 15-29 years with MDD and severe and mild suicidal symptoms, respectively, as well as those of 85 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Specifically, we measured serum levels of C-reactive protein, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-2, and interleukin-6 and assessed cognitive function by using working memory and go/no-go tasks. The severity of the patients' suicidal symptoms was based on Item 10 of the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale; scores of ≤ 2 and ≥ 4 indicated mild and severe symptoms, respectively. The patients with MDD and severe suicidal symptoms had higher levels of C-reactive protein (p = .019) and TNF-α (p = .002) than did the patients with mild symptoms or the healthy controls. The number of errors committed on the go/no-go by patients with MDD and severe suicidal symptoms (p = .001) was significantly higher than those by patients with MDD and mild symptoms or by controls. After adjusting for nonsuicidal depressive symptoms, we observed suicidal symptoms to be positively associated with TNF-α levels (p = .050) and errors on the go/no-go task (p = .021). Background: As the relationship between attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI) is gaining increasing attention, the TBI risk in patients with ADHD, unaffected siblings of ADHD probands, and non-ADHD controls remains unclear., Methods: Overall, 18,645 patients with ADHD, 18,880 unaffected siblings of ADHD probands, and 188,800 age-/sex-matched controls were followed up from enrollment to the end of 2011. The cases of TBI and TBI requiring hospitalization were identified during follow-up., Results: Patients with ADHD (hazard ratio [HR]: 1.57) and unaffected siblings (HR: 1.20) had an increased risk of any TBI compared with non-ADHD controls. Surprisingly, the likelihood of developing TBI requiring hospitalization during follow-up was higher in the unaffected siblings group (HR: 1.21) than in the control group, whereas it was lower in the ADHD probands group (HR: 0.86)., Conclusions: Patients with ADHD and unaffected siblings of ADHD probands were more likely to develop any TBI during follow-up than controls. Unaffected siblings of patients with ADHD exhibited the highest risk of subsequent TBI requiring hospitalization compared with patients with ADHD and healthy controls. Therefore, TBI risk in patients with ADHD and their unaffected siblings would require further investigation., Impact: ADHD diagnosis and ADHD trait are associated with risk of traumatic brain injury (TBI). Background: The mental health of child and adolescent intensive care unit (ICU) survivors is increasingly being researched. However, the literature on how various types of critical illness influence specific psychiatric disorders remains limited., Methods: This study analyzed the data of 8704 child and adolescent ICU survivors and 87,040 age-, sex-, family income-, and residence-matched controls who were followed from enrollment to the end of 2013; the data covered the period from 1996 to 2013 and were extracted from a nationwide data set. The primary outcomes were the risks of five major psychiatric disorders (MPDs), namely schizophrenia, bipolar disorder (BD), major depressive disorder (MDD), obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)., Results: Relative to the controls, the child and adolescent ICU survivors (mean age = 10.33 years) exhibited higher risks of developing five MPDs. The associated hazard ratios (HRs) and confidence intervals (CIs) are as follows: PTSD, HR = 4.67, 95 % CI = 2.42-9.01; schizophrenia, HR = 3.19, 95 % CI = 2.27-4.47; BD, HR = 2.02, 95 % CI = 1.33-3.05; OCD, HR = 1.96, 95 % CI = 1.21-3.16; and MDD, HR = 1.68, 95 % CI = 1.44-1.95. Background: Anxiety disorders, major psychiatric disorders (e.g., schizophrenia and major affective disorders), and neurodevelopmental disorders (e.g., autism and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder [ADHD]) may cluster together within families. However, whether the first-degree relatives (FDRs) of individuals with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) are at an elevated risk of neurodevelopmental or major psychiatric disorders remains unknown., Methods: We identified 2,378,190 FDRs of patients with GAD and 9,512,760 birth year-matched and sex-matched controls from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. Neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism and ADHD, and major psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and GAD, were identified., Results: The FDRs-parents, offspring, and siblings-of individuals with GAD were more likely to be diagnosed as having schizophrenia (relative risk: 1.22), bipolar disorder (1.36), major depressive disorder (1.29), autism (1.20), ADHD (1.52), obsessive-compulsive disorder (1.21), and GAD (1.61) than are the FDRs of individuals without GAD., Conclusion: Our findings support the notion of a familial coaggregation between GAD, major psychiatric disorders, and neurodevelopmental disorders. Previous studies have shown an association between the thalamocortical dysconnectivity and treatment-resistant depression (TRD). Whether a single subanesthetic dose of ketamine may change thalamocortical connectivity among patients with TRD is unclear. Whether these changes in thalamocortical connectivity is associated with the antidepressant and antisuicidal effects of ketamine treatment is also unclear. Two resting-state functional MRIs were collected in two clinical trials of 48 patients with TRD (clinical trial 1; 32 receiving ketamine, 16 receiving a normal saline placebo) and 48 patients with TRD and strong suicidal ideation (clinical trial 2; 24 receiving ketamine, 24 receiving midazolam), respectively. All participants underwent rs-fMRI before and 3 days after infusion. Seed-based functional connectivity (FC) was analyzed in the left/right thalamus. FCs between the bilateral thalamus and right middle frontal cortex (BA46) and between the left thalamus and left anterior paracingulate gyrus (BA8) increased among patients in the ketamine group in clinical trials 1 and 2, respectively. FCs between the right thalamus and bilateral frontal pole (BA9) and between the right thalamus and left rostral paracingulate gyrus (BA10) decreased among patients in the ketamine group in clinical trials 1 and 2, respectively. However, the associations between those FC changes and clinical symptom changes did not survive statistical significance after multiple comparison corrections. Background/Objectives: To update the perspectives of the association between diabetes (DM) and adhesive capsulitis (AC). Methods: Our findings were summarized in a narrative review. We searched PubMed, Embase, and Consensus databases, using keywords such as "diabetes", "adhesive capsulitis", and "frozen shoulder", for articles published from January 2015 to June 2024, covering both type 1 and type 2 DM. Results: After compiling relevant articles on DM-related AC published since 2015, we found that most studies show an increased prevalence of AC in DM patients, ranging from 3 to 10 times. A longer duration of DM is a risk factor for AC. Whether T1DM or prolonged insulin use will increase the risk of AC is still controversial. Poor blood sugar control seems to increase the risk of AC. Recent studies also show a correlation between blood sugar levels and the prevalence of AC. Cytokines, such as IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α, VEGF, and AGEs, related to inflammation and fibrosis may contribute to the pathophysiological processes of AC. Conclusions: Recent research findings have revealed new perspectives divergent from past notions, while also presenting some topics worthy of exploration. Due the close relationship between DM and AC, clinicians need to be alert to the presence of AC, especially early stage, in DM cases, and control the blood glucose level to reduce the risk of AC. Further research is still needed to provide better prevention and management for DM patients with AC.

Aims: Research evidence has established an association of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) with suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts. However, further investigation is required to determine whether individuals with OCD have higher risk of death by suicide compared with those without OCD., Methods: Of the entire Taiwanese population, between 2003 and 2017, 56,977 individuals with OCD were identified; they were then matched at a 1:4 ratio with 227,908 non-OCD individuals on the basis of their birth year and sex. Suicide mortality was assessed between 2003 and 2017 for both groups. Time-dependent Cox regression models were used to investigate the difference in suicide risk between individuals with versus without OCD., Results: After adjustment for major psychiatric comorbidities (i.e., schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder), the OCD group had higher risk of suicide (hazard ratio: 1.97, 95% confidence interval: 1.57-2.48) during the follow-up compared with the comparison group. Furthermore, OCD severity, as indicated by psychiatric hospitalizations due to OCD, was positively correlated with suicide risk., Conclusions: Regardless of the existence of major psychiatric comorbidities, OCD was found to be an independent risk factor for death by suicide. A suicide prevention program specific to individuals with OCD may be developed in clinical practice in the future.

This study examined the correlation of titin ( TTN ) polymorphisms with the sensitivity of oral squamous cell cancer (OSCC) and clinical characteristics. Six TTN SNPs, including rs10497520, rs12463674, rs12465459, rs2042996, rs2244492, and rs2303838, were evaluated in 322 control groups and 606 patients with oral cancer. We then investigated whether the SNP genotypes rs10497520 had associations with clinical pathological categories. Our data showed that the TC + CC genotype of rs10497520 was associated with moderate/poor tumor cell differentiation. The carriers of TTN rs10497520 polymorphic variant "TC + CC" in OSCC patients with cigarette smoking were linked with poor tumor differentiation ( p = 0.008). Our results suggest that the TTN SNP rs10497520 is a possible genetic marker for oral cancer patients in the cigarette-smoking population. The TTN rs10497520 polymorphisms may be essential biomarkers to predict the onset and prognosis of oral cancer disease.

Background: High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) is widely recognized for its protective effects against cognitive decline. However, recent studies have presented conflicting results, with some suggesting no significant cognitive benefits or even an increased risk of dementia associated with high HDL-C levels. For those who suffer from depression, the cognitive benefits of HDL-C may be diminished or reversed. The purpose of this study is to investigate the associations between HDL-C, cognitive ability, and depressive symptoms in middle-aged and older Chinese adults., Methods: The datasets utilized were sourced from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) for the years 2011 and 2015, comprising 4,302 participants. Cross-lagged models were employed to explore the temporal sequence between cognitive performance and HDL-C levels, and to examine the interplay among depression, cognition, and HDL-C. Confounding factors such as sociodemographic characteristics, sleep conditions, and history of chronic diseases were controlled for., Results: The analysis revealed unidirectional effects of baseline impaired cognition and greater severity of depression on increased HDL-C levels at follow-up (β =  - 0.036 and β = 0.028, respectively, P < 0.05). However, higher baseline HDL-C levels did not significantly predict cognitive performance or depression 4 years later (β =  - 0.008 and β = 0.023, respectively, P > 0.05). Depressive symptoms and cognition were found to have a significant bidirectional association (β =  - 0.026 and β =  - 0.053, respectively, P < 0.05)., Conclusions: Cognitive impairment and depression are associated with higher HDL-C levels, whereas higher HDL-C levels do not appear to protect against cognitive decline or depressive symptoms. These findings underscore the importance of preserving cognitive and mental health, which may lower the likelihood of cardiovascular disease and dementia. Objective: To investigate the risks of suicide, accidental death, and major psychiatric disorders in first-degree relatives (FDRs) of people who die accidentally. Evidence has shown that the endophenotypes of impulsivity and risk-taking are known to coaggregate with major psychiatric disorders, suicide, and accidental deaths within families., Methods: In total, 136,011 FDRs of individuals who died from accidents and 544,044 individuals matched for age and sex who served as a control group were included in the present study. The relative risks of accidental death and suicide were assessed between these groups. Differences in the frequencies of major psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, autism spectrum disorder, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) between the groups were also identified., Results: The FDRs of individuals who died from accidents were more likely to themselves die from accidents (relative risk [RR] = 4.62) and by suicide (RR = 1.54) compared with individuals in the control group. The FDRs of individuals who died from accidents had an increased risk of developing schizophrenia (RR = 1.24), bipolar disorder (RR = 1.18), major depressive disorder (RR = 1.26), and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (RR = 1.10) compared with the FDRs of individuals who did not die from accidents., Conclusion: Our findings may serve as a reminder to public health officials and clinicians to monitor closely the mental health of the FDRs of individuals who die from accidents., (Copyright © 2024 Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research. Background: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease. However, few studies have investigated brain changes associated with chronic inflammation. We hypothesized that chronic inflammation might be related to brain structural alterations in patients with AD. Objectives: To investigate the association between disease severity (Eczema Area and Severity Index [EASI]), proinflammatory cytokines, and differences in brain gray matter (GM) volume in patients with AD. Methods: Nineteen patients with AD and 19 age- and sex-matched healthy subjects were enrolled. All participants underwent clinical assessment and brain magnetic resonance imaging. Voxel-based morphometry was performed to analyze GM volume differences. Results: Patients with AD exhibited significantly decreased GM volume in many brain regions, such as bilateral precentral gyrus, right frontal pole, and right middle temporal gyrus ( P  < 0.001), compared with healthy subjects. Notably, in patients with AD, the GM volume in right middle temporal gyrus was negatively associated with both EASI score and proinflammatory cytokines (sIL-2R [soluble interleukin 2 receptor] and TNF-α receptor-1), whereas the GM volume in left precentral gyrus was negatively associated with both EASI score and proinflammatory cytokines (sIL-2R and CRP). Conclusion: Patients with AD demonstrated significant brain GM volume reduction in many brain regions, which is related to disease severity and proinflammatory cytokines.

Tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) have revolutionized the treatment landscape for chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). However, TKI resistance poses a significant challenge, leading to treatment failure and disease progression. Resistance mechanisms include both BCR::ABL1-dependent and BCR::ABL1-independent pathways. The mechanisms underlying BCR::ABL1 independence remain incompletely understood, with CML cells potentially activating alternative signaling pathways, including the AKT/mTOR and JAK2/STAT5 pathways, to compensate for the loss of BCR::ABL1 kinase activity. This study explored tumoral VISTA (encoded by VSIR) as a contributing factor to TKI resistance in CML patients and identified elevated tumoral VISTA levels as a marker of resistance and poor survival. Through in vitro and in vivo analyses, we demonstrated that VSIR knockdown and the application of NSC-622608, a novel VISTA inhibitor, significantly impeded CML cell proliferation and induced apoptosis by attenuating the AKT/ mTOR and JAK2/STAT5 pathways, which are crucial for CML cell survival independent of BCR::ABL1 kinase activity. Moreover, VSIR overexpression promoted TKI resistance in CML cells. Importantly, the synergistic effect of NSC-622608 with TKIs offers a potent therapeutic avenue against both imatinib-sensitive and imatinib-resistant CML cells, including those harboring the challenging T315I mutation. Our findings highlight the role of tumoral VISTA in mediating TKI resistance in CML, suggesting that inhibition of VISTA, particularly in combination with TKIs, is an innovative approach to enhancing treatment outcomes in CML patients, irrespective of BCR::ABL1 mutation status. This study not only identified a new pathway contributing to TKI resistance but also revealed the possibility of targeting tumoral VISTA as a means of overcoming this significant clinical challenge.

Background: The co-infection of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and tuberculosis (TB) poses a significant clinical challenge and is a major global public health issue. This study aims to elucidate the disease burden of HIV-TB co-infection in global, regions and countries, providing critical information for policy decisions to curb the HIV-TB epidemic., Methods: The ecological time-series study used data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study 2021. The data encompass the numbers of incidence, prevalence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life year (DALY), as well as age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR), prevalence rate (ASPR), mortality rate (ASMR), and DALY rate for HIV-infected drug-susceptible tuberculosis (HIV-DS-TB), HIV-infected multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (HIV-MDR-TB), and HIV-infected extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (HIV-XDR-TB) from 1990 to 2021. from 1990 to 2021. The estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) of rates, with 95% confidence intervals (CIs), was calculated., Results: In 2021, the global ASIR for HIV-DS-TB was 11.59 per 100,000 population (95% UI: 0.37-13.05 per 100,000 population), 0.55 per 100,000 population (95% UI: 0.38-0.81 per 100,000 population), for HIV-MDR-TB, and 0.02 per 100,000 population (95% UI: 0.01-0.03 per 100,000 population) for HIV-XDR-TB. The EAPC for the ASIR of HIV-MDR-TB and HIV-XDR-TB from 1990 to 2021 were 4.71 (95% CI: 1.92-7.59) and 13.63 (95% CI: 9.44-18.01), respectively. The global ASMR for HIV-DS-TB was 2.22 per 100,000 population (95% UI: 1.73-2.74 per 100,000 population), 0.21 per 100,000 population (95% UI: 0.09-0.39 per 100,000 population) for HIV-MDR-TB, and 0.01 per 100,000 population (95% UI: 0.00-0.03 per 100,000 population) for HIV-XDR-TB in 2021. The EAPC for the ASMR of HIV-MDR-TB and HIV-XDR-TB from 1990 to 2021 were 4.78 (95% CI: 1.32-8.32) and 10.00 (95% CI: 6.09-14.05), respectively., Conclusions: The findings indicate that enhancing diagnostic and treatment strategies, strengthening healthcare infrastructure, increasing access to quality medical care, and improving public health education are essential to combat HIV-TB co-infection., (© 2024. 4 β -Hydroxycholesterol (4 β -HC) in plasma has been used as a biomarker to assess CYP3A drug-drug interaction (DDI) potential during drug development. However, due to the long half-life and narrow dynamic range of 4 β -HC, its use has been limited to the identification of CYP3A inducers, but not CYP3A inhibitors. The formation of 1 β -hydroxydeoxycholic acid (1 β -OH DCA) from deoxycholic acid (DCA) is mediated by CYP3A, thus 1 β -OH DCA can potentially serve as an alternative to 4 β -HC for assessment of CYP3A DDI potential. To study this feasibility, we developed a sensitive liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method for the simultaneous quantitation of 1 β -OH DCA and its glycine and taurine conjugates in human plasma with the lower limit of quantitation of 50 pg/ml, which enabled the quantitation of basal levels and further reduction. The method was applied to a DDI study to assess how 1 β -OH DCA and its glycine and taurine conjugates would respond to CYP3A induction or inhibition. Rifampin induction resulted in an increase of 1 β -OH DCA and its conjugates in plasma, with 6.8-, 7.8-, 8.3-, and 10.3-fold increases of area under the curve from the time of dosing to the last measurable concentration (AUC LST ), area under the curve from the time of dosing to 24 hours (AUC 24h ), C max , and mean concentrations for total 1 β -OH DCA (total of all three forms), respectively. Importantly, inhibition with itraconazole resulted in notable reduction of these biomarkers, with 84%, 85%, 82%, and 81% reductions of AUC LST , AUC 24h , C max , and mean concentrations for total 1 β -OH DCA, respectively. These preliminary data demonstrate for the first time that total 1 β -OH DCA in plasma has the potential to serve as a biomarker for CYP3A DDI assessment in early clinical development and may provide key advantages over 4 β -HC. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: The authors have reported the use of total 1 β -hydroxydeoxycholic acid (1 β -OH DCA) (sum of 1 β -OH DCA and its glycine and taurine conjugates) plasma exposure as a biomarker for CYP3A activity. Itraconazole inhibition led to an 81%-85% decrease of total 1 β -OH DCA plasma exposures, whereas rifampin induction led to a 6.8- to 10.3-fold increase of total 1 β -OH DCA plasma exposures. The mean diagnosis age of autism was about 5 years in Taiwan. Whether the delayed diagnosis of autism (≥ 6 years) was associated with parental severe mental disorders remained unknown. The parents of 22,859 autistic individuals and 228,590 age- and sex-matched nonautistic individuals were assessed for the presence of severe mental disorders (schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, alcohol use disorder, and substance use disorder). The timing of autism diagnosis was classified into three age categories: < 6 years, 6-11 years, and ≥ 12 years. Logistic regression models were used to examine associations between parental severe mental disorders and these age categories of autism diagnosis. Parental schizophrenia and substance use disorders were associated with the delayed diagnosis of autism, both diagnosis at ≥ 12 years (odds ratio [OR]: 2.14; 1.57) and at 6-11 years (1.87; 1.38). Parental bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder were also associated with the delayed diagnosis of autism, especially diagnosis at 6-11 years (OR 1.98; 1.86). Objective: Psilocybin-assisted therapy has shown promising efficacy on clinical depressive symptoms. However, diverse psychological support or psychotherapy was performed with psilocybin treatment. This study aimed to explore the association of psychological protocols with the efficacy of psilocybin-assisted therapy for depressive symptoms., Method: Five major databases were systemic searched for clinical trials addressing psilocybin-assisted therapy for patients with clinical depressive symptoms. A Bayesian random-effects meta-analysis and meta-regression were performed. The effect size was mean difference (with 95% credible interval) measured by 17-Item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale., Results: There were 10 eligible studies including 515 adult patients with clinically diagnosed depression. The psychological protocols could be categorized into four types: (i) manualized directive psychotherapy(k=1); (ii) manualized nondirective psychological support(k=3), (iii) non-manualized nondirective psychological support(k=5); and (iv) non-manualized supportive psychotherapy(k=1). The pooled standard mean difference of psilocybin-assisted therapy was 10.08 (5.03-14.70)., Conclusion: Compared with manualized nondirective psychological support, the other three psychological approaches did not differ significantly. Metalens, characterized by their unique functions and distinctive physical properties, have gained significant attention for their potential applications. To further optimize the performance of metalens, it is necessary to characterize the phase modulation of the metalens. In this study, we present a multi-distance phase retrieval system based on optical field scanning and discuss its convergence and robustness. Our findings indicate that the system is capable of retrieving the phase distribution of the metalens as long as the measurement noise is low and the total length of the scanned light field is sufficiently long. This system enables the analysis of focal length and aberration by utilizing the computed phase distribution. We extend our investigation to measure the phase distribution of the metalens operating in the near-infrared (NIR) spectrum and identify the impact of defects in the sample on the phase. Additionally, we conduct a comparative analysis of the phase distribution of the metalens in air and ethanol and observe the variations in the phase modulation of the metalens in different working mediums.
