Here, we report curvature-induced electron spin catalysis by using solid carbon spheres as catalysts, which were synthesized using positive curvature molecular hexabromocyclopentadiene as a precursor molecule, following a radical coupling mechanism. The curvature spin of carbon is regarded as an overlapping state of σ- and π-radical, which is identified by the inverse Laplace transform of pulse-electron paramagnetic resonance. The growth mechanism of carbon spheres abiding by Kroto's model, is supported by the density functional theory study of thermodynamics and kinetics calculations. The solid carbon spheres present excellent catalytic behaviour of oxidation coupling of amines to form corresponding imines with the conversion of >99%, selectivity of 98.7%, and yield of 97.7%, which is attributed to the predominantly curvature-induced electron spin catalysis of carbon, supported by the calculation of oxygen adsorption energy. Materials with near-infrared (near-IR) luminescence are desirable for applications in communications and sensing, as well as biomedical diagnostics and imaging. The most used inorganic near-IR emitters rely on precise doping of host crystal structures with select rare-earth or transition metal ions. Recently, another class of materials with intrinsic near-IR emission has been reported. The compositions of these materials were initially described as vacancy-ordered halide double perovskites Cs 2 MoCl 6 and Cs 2 WCl 6 , but further investigation by some of us on the compound reported as Cs 2 WCl 6 revealed an oxyhalide instead, with a composition Cs 2 WO x Cl 6- x , where 1 < x < 2. Here we demonstrate that the Mo compounds similarly possess the composition Cs 2 MoO x Cl 6- x or Cs 2 MoO x Br 6- x where 1 < x < 2. Preparing the pure halide appears harder for Mo than for W, and we have not succeeded in doing so. The distinctly different composition requires the coordination environment and oxidation state for the Mo and W centers to be reconsidered from what was assumed for the pure halides. In this work, we examine the mechanism for near-IR emission in these materials given their true structures and compositions. We demonstrate that the luminescence is due to the specific d-orbital splitting caused by the presence of oxygen in the distorted [MOX 5 ] 2- octahedra (X is Cl or Br). The fine structure in the emission spectra at low temperatures has been resolved and is attributed to vibronic coupling to the Mo-O and W-O bond stretches. Inorganic zeolites have excellent molecular sieving properties, but they are difficult to process into macroscopic structures. In this work, we use metal-organic framework (MOF) glass as substrates to engineer the interface with inorganic zeolites, and then assemble the discrete crystalline zeolite powders into monolithic structures. The zeolites are well dispersed and stabilized within the MOF glass matrix, and the monolith has satisfactory mechanical stabilities for membrane applications. We demonstrate the effective separation performance of the membrane for 1,3-butadiene (C 4 H 6 ) from other C 4 hydrocarbons, which is a crucial and challenging separation in the chemical industry. The membrane achieves a high permeance of C 4 H 6 (693.00±21.83 GPU) and a high selectivity over n-butene, n-butane, isobutene, and isobutane (9.72, 9.94, 10.31, and 11.94, respectively). The discovery of new crystalline inorganic compounds-novel compositions of matter within known structure types, or even compounds with completely new crystal structures-constitutes an important goal of solid-state and materials chemistry. Some fractions of new compounds can eventually lead to new structural and functional materials that enhance the efficiency of existing technologies or even enable completely new technologies. Materials researchers eagerly welcome new approaches to the discovery of new compounds, especially those that offer the promise of accelerated success. The recent report from a group of scientists at Google who employ a combination of existing data sets, high-throughput density functional theory calculations of structural stability, and the tools of artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) to propose new compounds is an exciting advance. We examine the claims of this work here, unfortunately finding scant evidence for compounds that fulfill the trifecta of novelty, credibility, and utility. Hybrid halide perovskites AM II X 3 (A = ammonium cation, M II = divalent cation, X = Cl, Br, I) have been extensively studied but have only previously been reported for the divalent carbon group elements Ge, Sn, and Pb. While they have displayed an impressive range of optoelectronic properties, the instability of Ge II and Sn II and the toxicity of Pb have stimulated significant interest in finding alternatives to these carbon group-based perovskites. Here, we describe the low-temperature solid-state synthesis of five new hybrid iodide perovskites centered around divalent alkaline earth and lanthanide elements, with the general formula AM II I 3 (A = methylammonium, MA; M II = Sr, Sm, Eu, and A = formamidinium, FA; M II = Sr, Eu). Structural, calorimetric, optical, photoluminescence, and magnetic properties of these materials are reported.

The stellar optoelectronic properties of metal halide perovskites provide enormous promise for next-generation optical devices with excellent conversion efficiencies and lower manufacturing costs. However, there is a long-standing ambiguity as to whether the perovskite surface/interface (e.g. structure, charge transfer or source of off-target recombination) or bulk properties are the more determining factor in device performance. Here we fabricate an array of CsPbI 3 crystal and hybrid glass composites by sintering and globally visualise the property-performance landscape. Our findings reveal that the interface is the primary determinant of the crystal phases, optoelectronic quality, and stability of CsPbI 3 . In particular, the presence of a diffusion "alloying" layer is discovered to be critical for passivating surface traps, and beneficially altering the energy landscape of crystal phases. However, high-temperature sintering results in the promotion of a non-stoichiometric perovskite and excess traps at the interface, despite the short-range structure of halide is retained within the alloying layer. Long-duration storage of hydrogen is necessary for coupling renewable H 2 with stationary fuel cell power applications. In this work, aluminum formate (ALF), which adopts the ReO 3 -type structure, is shown to have remarkable H 2 storage performance at non-cryogenic (>120 K) temperatures and low pressures. The most promising performance of ALF is found between 120 K and 160 K and at 10 bar to 20 bar. The study illustrates H 2 adsorption performance of ALF over the 77 K to 296 K temperature range using gas isotherms, in situ neutron powder diffraction, and DFT calculations, as well as technoeconomic analysis (TEA), illustrating ALF's competitive performance for long-duration storage versus compressed hydrogen and leading metal-organic frameworks. In the TEA, it is shown that ALF's storage capacity, when combined with a temperature/pressure swing process, has advantages versus compressed H 2 at a fraction of the pressure (15 bar versus 350 bar). Given ALF's performance in the 10 bar to 20 bar regime under moderate cooling, it is particularly promising for use in safe storage systems serving fuel cells.

Photoluminescence blinking behavior from single quantum dots under steady illumination is an important but controversial topic. Its occurrence has impeded the use of single quantum dots in bioimaging. Different mechanisms have been proposed to account for it, although controversial, the most important of which is the non-radiative Auger recombination mechanism whereby photocharging of quantum dots can lead to the blinking phenomenon. Here, the singly charged trion, which maintains photon emission, including radiative recombination and non-radiative Auger recombination, leads to fluorescence non-blinking which is observed in photocharged single graphene quantum dots (GQDs). This phenomenon can be explained in terms of different energy levels in the GQDs, caused by various oxygen-containing functional groups in the single GQDs. The suppressed blinking is due to the filling of trap sites owing to a Coulomb blockade. Electrocatalytic synthesis under mild conditions has become increasingly important as one of the practical alternatives for industrial applications, especially for the green ammonia (NH 3 ) industry. A properly engineered electrocatalyst plays a vital role in the realization of superior catalytic performance. Among various types of promising nanomaterials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are competitive candidates for developing efficient electrocatalytic NH 3 synthesis from simple nitrogen-containing molecules or ions, such as N 2 and NO 3 - . In this review, recent advances in the development of electrocatalysts derived from MOFs for the electrosynthesis of NH 3 are collected, categorized, and discussed, including their application in the N 2 reduction reaction (NRR) and the NO 3 - reduction reaction (NO 3 RR). Firstly, the fundamental principles are illustrated, such as plausible mechanisms of NH 3 generation from N 2 and NO 3 - , the apparatus of corresponding electrocatalysis, parameters for evaluation of reaction efficiency, and detection methods of yielding NH 3 . Then, the electrocatalysts for NRR processes are discussed in detail, including pristine MOFs, MOF-hybrids, MOF-derived N-doped porous carbons, single atomic catalysts from pyrolysis of MOFs, and other MOF-related materials. Subsequently, MOF-related NO 3 RR processes are also listed and discussed. Finally, the existing challenges and prospects for the rational design and fabrication of electrocatalysts from MOFs for electrochemical NH 3 synthesis are presented, such as the evolution of investigation methods with artificial intelligence, innovation in synthetic methods of MOF-related catalysts, advancement of characterization techniques, and extended electrocatalytic reactions., (© 2023. Halide double perovskites [A 2 M I M III X 6 ] are an important class of materials that have garnered substantial interest as non-toxic alternatives to conventional lead iodide perovskites for optoelectronic applications. While numerous studies have examined chloride and bromide double perovskites, reports of iodide double perovskites are rare, and their definitive structural characterization has not been reported. Predictive models have aided us here in the synthesis and characterization of five iodide double perovskites of general formula Cs 2 NaLnI 6 (Ln=Ce, Nd, Gd, Tb, Dy). Exclusive capture of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) from hydrocarbons via adsorptive separation is an important technology in the petrochemical industry, especially for acetylene (C 2 H 2 ) production. However, the physicochemical similarities between CO 2 and C 2 H 2 hamper the development of CO 2 -preferential sorbents, and CO 2 is mainly discerned via C recognition with low efficiency. Here, we report that the ultramicroporous material Al(HCOO) 3 , ALF, can exclusively capture CO 2 from hydrocarbon mixtures, including those containing C 2 H 2 and CH 4 . ALF shows a remarkable CO 2 capacity of 86.2 cm 3 g -1 and record-high CO 2 /C 2 H 2 and CO 2 /CH 4 uptake ratios. The inverse CO 2 /C 2 H 2 separation and exclusive CO 2 capture performance from hydrocarbons are validated via adsorption isotherms and dynamic breakthrough experiments. Notably, the hydrogen-confined pore cavities with appropriate dimensional size provide an ideal pore chemistry to specifically match CO 2 via a hydrogen bonding mechanism, with all hydrocarbons rejected. This molecular recognition mechanism is unveiled by in situ Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction studies, and molecular simulations.

Separating oxygen from air to create oxygen-enriched gas streams is a process that is significant in both industrial and medical fields. However, the prominent technologies for creating oxygen-enriched gas streams are both energy and infrastructure intensive as they use cryogenic temperatures or materials that adsorb N 2 from air. The latter method is less efficient than the methods that adsorb O 2 directly. Herein, we show, via a combination of gas adsorption isotherms, gas breakthrough experiments, neutron and synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and computational studies, that the metal-organic framework, Al(HCOO) 3 (ALF), which is easily prepared at low cost from commodity chemicals, exhibits substantial O 2 adsorption and excellent time-dependent O 2 /N 2 selectivity in a range of 50-125 near dry ice/solvent (≈190 K) temperatures. The effective O 2 adsorption with ALF at ≈190 K and ≈0.21 bar (the partial pressure of O 2 in air) is ≈1.7 mmol/g, and at ice/salt temperatures (≈250 K), it is ≈0.3 mmol/g. Though the kinetics for full adsorption of O 2 near 190 K are slower than at temperatures nearer 250 K, the kinetics for initial O 2 adsorption are fast, suggesting that O 2 separation using ALF with rapid temperature swings at ambient pressures is a potentially viable choice for low-cost air separation applications. We also present synthetic strategies for improving the kinetics of this family of compounds, namely, via Al/Fe solid solutions. To the best of our knowledge, ALF has the highest O 2 /N 2 sorption selectivity among MOF adsorbents without open metal sites as verified by co-adsorption experiments..

Imines are important intermediates for synthesizing various fine chemicals, with the disadvantage of requiring the use of expensive metal-containing catalysts. We report that the dehydrogenative cross-coupling of phenylmethanol and benzylamine (or aniline) directly forms the corresponding imine with a yield of up to 98%, and water as the sole by-product, in the presence of a stoichiometric base, using carbon nanostructures as the "green" metal-free carbon catalysts with high spin concentrations, which is synthesized by C(sp 2 )-C(sp 3 ) free radical coupling reactions. The catalytic mechanism is attributed to the unpaired electrons of carbon catalysts to reduce O 2 to O 2 ·- , which triggers the oxidative coupling reaction to form imines, whereas the holes in the carbon catalysts receive electrons from the amine to restore the spin states. This is supported by density functional theory calculations. Here, we report kinetic studies using electron spin resonance spectroscopy on spin catalysis reactions caused by using graphene belts which were synthesized by a radical coupling method. The results show that σ-type free radical species provide the dominant sites for catalytic activity through the spin-spin interaction, although there are some other influencing factors. The spin catalysis mechanism can be applied both in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and in organic synthesis. The graphene belt spin catalyst shows excellent performance with a high ORR half-wave potential of 0.81 V and long-term stability with almost no loss of activity after 50 000 cycles in alkaline media. It also shows excellent performance in a benzylamine coupling with molecular oxygen to generate the corresponding imine at an average conversion of ≈97.7 % and an average yield of ≈97.9 %. Perovskite-related materials show very promising properties in many fields. Pb-free perovskites are particularly interesting, because of the toxicity of Pb. In this study, hybrid double perovskite MA 2 KBiCl 6 (MA = methylammonium cation) was found to have interesting variable temperature behaviours. Both variable temperature single crystal X-ray diffraction, synchrotron powder diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy were conducted to reveal a rhombohedral to cubic phase transition at around 330 K and an order to disorder transition for inorganic cage below 210 K.

A combination of gas adsorption and gas breakthrough measurements show that the metal-organic framework, Al(HCOO) 3 (ALF), which can be made inexpensively from commodity chemicals, exhibits excellent CO 2 adsorption capacities and outstanding CO 2 /N 2 selectivity that enable it to remove CO 2 from dried CO 2 -containing gas streams at elevated temperatures (323 kelvin). Notably, ALF is scalable, readily pelletized, stable to SO 2 and NO, and simple to regenerate. Density functional theory calculations and in situ neutron diffraction studies reveal that the preferential adsorption of CO 2 is a size-selective separation that depends on the subtle difference between the kinetic diameters of CO 2 and N 2 . The findings are supported by additional measurements, including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and variable temperature powder and single-crystal x-ray diffraction.

The rapid development of flexible electronic devices, especially based on 2D materials, has triggered the demand for high-strength materials. Mono- or few-layer phosphorene with excellent electronic properties has attracted extensive attention. However, phosphorene is affected by its low Young's modulus when applied to flexible electronic devices. Here, a strategy via ion intercalation to significantly improve the mechanical properties of black phosphorus to generate hydrogen-bond-bridged phosphorene films with Young's modulus as high as 316 GPa is reported. This value is several times larger than the theoretical values of 166 GPa in the zigzag direction, 44 GPa in the armchair direction, and the averaged Young's modulus among all directions of 94 GPa. The impact of intercalation on mechanical properties is also explored. Experimental nanoindentation results obtained by atomic force microscopy indicate that the relationship between the ratio of intercalated ions to phosphorus atoms and the corresponding Young's modulus satisfies the formula E = e a e - [ ln ( x ) + b ] 2 c ( 0 < x ≤ 1.80 ) \[E{\bm{ = }}{e^{a{e^{\frac{{{\bm{ - }}{{[\ln (x){\bm{ + }}b]}^2}}}{c}}}}}(0{\bm{ &lt; }}x{\bm{ \le }}1.80)\] . Furthermore, a flexible NO 2 gas sensor device based on this ultratough material presents excellent performance, even after 10 000 bending cycles. Lithium and sodium (Na) mixed polyanion solid electrolytes for all-solid-state batteries display some of the highest ionic conductivities reported to date. However, the effect of polyanion mixing on the ion-transport properties is still not fully understood. Here, we focus on Na 1+x Zr 2 Si x P 3-x O 12 (0 ≤ x ≤ 3) NASICON electrolyte to elucidate the role of polyanion mixing on the Na-ion transport properties. Although NASICON is a widely investigated system, transport properties derived from experiments or theory vary by orders of magnitude. We use more than 2000 distinct ab initio-based kinetic Monte Carlo simulations to map the compositional space of NASICON over various time ranges, spatial resolutions and temperatures. Via electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements on samples with different sodium content, we find that the highest ionic conductivity (i.e., about 0.165 S cm -1 at 473 K) is experimentally achieved in Na 3.4 Zr 2 Si 2.4 P 0.6 O 12 , in line with simulations (i.e., about 0.170 S cm -1 at 473 K). The theoretical studies indicate that doped NASICON compounds (especially those with a silicon content x ≥ 2.4) can improve the Na-ion mobility compared to undoped NASICON compositions., (© 2022. Chiral hybrid metal halides with a high dissymmetry factor (g lum ) and a superior photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) are promising candidates for circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) light sources. Here, we report eight new chiral hybrid manganese halides, crystallizing in the non-centrosymmetric space group P2 1 2 1 2 1 and showing intense CPL emissions. Oppositely-signed circular dichroism (CD) and CPL signals are detected according to the R- and S-configurations of the chiral alkanolammonium cations. Time-resolved PL spectra show long averaged decay lifetimes up to 1 ms for (R-3-quinuclidinol)MnBr 3 (R-1). The g lum of polycrystalline samples for coordinated structures (23×10 -3 ) is more than doubled compared with the non-coordinated ones (8.5×10 -3 ), due to the structural variations. R-1 exhibit both a high g lum and a high PLQY (50.2 %). Natrium super ionic conductor (NASICON) compounds form a rich and highly chemically tunable family of crystalline materials that are of widespread interest because they include exemplars with high ionic conductivity, low thermal expansion, and redox tunability. This makes them suitable candidates for applications ranging from solid-state batteries to nuclear waste storage materials. The key to an understanding of these properties, including the origins of effective cation transport and low, anisotropic (and sometimes negative) thermal expansion, lies in the lattice dynamics associated with specific details of the crystal structure. Here we closely examine the prototypical NASICON compound, NaZr 2 (PO 4 ) 3 , and obtain detailed insights into such behavior via variable-temperature neutron diffraction and 23 Na and 31 P solid-state NMR studies, coupled with comprehensive density functional theory-based calculations of NMR parameters. Temperature-dependent NMR studies yield some surprising trends in the chemical shifts and the quadrupolar coupling constants that are not captured by computation unless the underlying vibrational modes of the crystal are explicitly taken into account. Furthermore, the trajectories of the sodium, zirconium, and oxygen atoms in our dynamical simulations show good qualitative agreement with the anisotropic thermal parameters obtained at higher temperatures by neutron diffraction. Hybrid layered double perovskite (HLDP) halides comprise hexacoordinated 1+ and 3+ metals in the octahedral sites within a perovskite layer and organic amine cations between the layers. Progress on such materials has hitherto been limited to compounds containing main group 3+ ions isoelectronic with Pb II (such as Sb III and Bi III ). Here, we report eight HLDP halides from the A 2 M I M III X 8 family, where A = para -phenylenediammonium (PPDA), 1,4-butanediammonium (1,4-BDA), or 1,3-propanediammonium (1,3-PDA); M I = Cu or Ag; M III = Ru or Mo; X = Cl or Br. The optical band gaps, which lie in the range 1.55 to 2.05 eV, are tunable according to the layer composition, but are largely independent of the spacer. Magnetic measurements carried out for (PPDA) 2 Ag I Ru III Cl 8 and (PPDA) 2 Ag I Mo III Cl 8 show no obvious evidence of a magnetic ordering transition. While the t 2 g 3 Mo III compound displays Curie-Weiss behavior for a spin-only d 3 ion, the t 2 g 5 Ru III compound displays marked deviations from the Kotani theory.

In the pursuit of urgently needed, energy dense solid-state batteries for electric vehicle and portable electronics applications, halide solid electrolytes offer a promising path forward with exceptional compatibility against high-voltage oxide electrodes, tunable ionic conductivities, and facile processing. For this family of compounds, synthesis protocols strongly affect cation site disorder and modulate Li + mobility. In this work, we reveal the presence of a high concentration of stacking faults in the superionic conductor Li 3 YCl 6 and demonstrate a method of controlling its Li + conductivity by tuning the defect concentration with synthesis and heat treatments at select temperatures. Leveraging complementary insights from variable temperature synchrotron X-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, cryogenic transmission electron microscopy, solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance, density functional theory, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, we identify the nature of planar defects and the role of nonstoichiometry in lowering Li + migration barriers and increasing Li site connectivity in mechanochemically synthesized Li 3 YCl 6 . We harness paramagnetic relaxation enhancement to enable 89 Y solid-state NMR and directly contrast the Y cation site disorder resulting from different preparation methods, demonstrating a potent tool for other researchers studying Y-containing compositions. With heat treatments at temperatures as low as 333 K (60 °C), we decrease the concentration of planar defects, demonstrating a simple method for tuning the Li + conductivity. Findings from this work are expected to be generalizable to other halide solid electrolyte candidates and provide an improved understanding of defect-enabled Li + conduction in this class of Li-ion conductors.

Thin films with effective ion sieving ability are highly desired in energy storage and conversion devices, including batteries and fuel cells. However, it remains challenging to design and fabricate cost-effective and easy-to-process ultrathin films for this purpose. Here, we report a 300 nm-thick functional layer based on porous organic cages (POCs), a new class of porous molecular materials, for fast and selective ion transport. This solution processable material allows for the design of thin films with controllable thickness and tunable porosity by tailoring cage chemistry for selective ion separation. In the prototype, the functional layer assembled by CC3 can selectively sieve Li + ions and efficiently suppress undesired polysulfides with minimal sacrifice for the system's total energy density. Separators modified with POC thin films enable batteries with good cycle performance and rate capability and offer an attractive path toward the development of future high-energy-density energy storage devices.

Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite (HOIP) ferroelectrics are attracting considerable interest because of their high performance, ease of synthesis, and lightweight. However, the intrinsic thermodynamic origins of their ferroelectric transitions remain insufficiently understood. Here, we identify the nature of the ferroelectric phase transitions in displacive [(CH 3 ) 2 NH 2 ][Mn(N 3 ) 3 ] and order-disorder type [(CH 3 ) 2 NH 2 ][Mn(HCOO) 3 ] via spatially resolved structural analysis and ab initio lattice dynamics calculations. Our results demonstrate that the vibrational entropy change of the extended perovskite lattice drives the ferroelectric transition in the former and also contributes importantly to that of the latter along with the rotational entropy change of the A-site. This finding not only reveals the delicate atomic dynamics in ferroelectric HOIPs but also highlights that both the local and extended fluctuation of the hybrid perovskite lattice can be manipulated for creating ferroelectricity by taking advantages of their abundant atomic, electronic, and phononic degrees of freedom.

Lead halide perovskite (LHP) semiconductors show exceptional optoelectronic properties. Barriers for their applications, however, lie in their polymorphism, instability to polar solvents, phase segregation, and susceptibility to the leaching of lead ions. We report a family of scalable composites fabricated through liquid-phase sintering of LHPs and metal-organic framework glasses. The glass acts as a matrix for LHPs, effectively stabilizing nonequilibrium perovskite phases through interfacial interactions. These interactions also passivate LHP surface defects and impart bright, narrow-band photoluminescence with a wide gamut for creating white light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The processable composites show high stability against immersion in water and organic solvents as well as exposure to heat, light, air, and ambient humidity. These properties, together with their lead self-sequestration capability, can enable breakthrough applications for LHPs.

The guest-dependent flexibility of the pillared-layered metal-organic framework (MOF), Zn 2 bdc 2 dabco· X (guest), where guest = EtOH, DMF or benzene, has been examined by high-pressure single crystal X-ray diffraction. A pressure-induced structural phase transition is found for the EtOH- and DMF-included frameworks during compression in a hydrostatic medium of the guest species, which is dependent upon the nature and quantity of the guest in the channels. The EtOH-included material undergoes a phase transition from P 4/ mmm to C 2/ m at 0.69 GPa, which is accompanied by a change in the pore shape from square to rhombus via super-filling of the pores. The DMF-included material undergoes a guest-mediated phase transition from I 4/ mcm to P 4/ mmm at 0.33 GPa via disordering of the DMF guest. In contrast, the benzene-included framework features a structure with rhombus-shaped channels at ambient pressure and shows direct compression under hydrostatic pressure. These results demonstrate the large influence of guest molecules on the high-pressure phase behavior of flexible MOFs. Vacancy-ordered double perovskites are attracting significant attention due to their chemical diversity and interesting optoelectronic properties. With a view to understanding both the optical and magnetic properties of these compounds, two series of Ru IV halides are presented; A 2 RuCl 6 and A 2 RuBr 6 , where A is K, NH 4 , Rb or Cs. We show that the optical properties and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) behavior can be tuned through changing the A cation and the halide. Within a series, the energy of the ligand-to-metal charge transfer increases as the unit cell expands with the larger A cation, and the band gaps are higher for the respective chlorides than for the bromides. The magnetic moments of the systems are temperature dependent due to a non-magnetic ground state with J eff =0 caused by SOC. Ru-X covalency, and consequently, the delocalization of metal d-electrons, result in systematic trends of the SOC constants due to variations in the A cation and the halide anion., (© 2020 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Although metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are being widely used to derive functional nanomaterials through pyrolysis, the actual mechanisms involved remain unclear. In the limited studies to date, elemental metallic species are found to be the initial products, which limits the variety of MOF-derived nanomaterials. Here, the pyrolysis of a manganese triazolate MOF is examined carefully in terms of phase transformation, reaction pathways, and morphology evolution in different conditions. Surprisingly, the formation of metal is not detected when manganese triazolate is pyrolyzed in an oxygen-free environment. Instead, a direct transformation into nanoparticles of manganese nitride, Mn 2 N x embedded in N-doped graphitic carbon took place. The electrically conductive Mn 2 N x nanoparticles show much better air stability than bulk samples and exhibit promising electrocatalytic performance for the oxygen reduction reaction. This Review examines how the intermarriage of perovskite and metal-organic framework crystals brings new paradigms for material design and functionality. The strategic combination of halide perovskites and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has generated a new family of porous composite materials that will enable new applications, including optoelectronic, catalysis, sensing, and data encryption. This Review surveys the current progress of this exciting new area. Fundamental aspects, including perovskite nucleation and growth, heterojunction electron-hole transfer, electronic structure, and luminescence within confined spaces, are highlighted, with suggestions of approaches by which guest confinement within MOFs can be synthetically designed. We further address the underlying principles and discuss the new insights and tools for the manipulation of these composite materials for the development of synthetic microporous semiconducting composites, as well as new strategies for host-guest interfacial engineering., (© 2020 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Hybrid materials are increasingly demonstrating their utility across several optical, electrical, and magnetic applications. Cu(I) halide-based hybrids have attracted attention due to their strong luminescence in the absence of rare-earths. Here, we report three Cu(I) and Ag(I) hybrid iodides with 1,5-naphthyridine and additional triphenylphosphine (Ph 3 P) ligands. The compounds are built on (Cu/Ag)-I staircase chains or on a rhomboid Cu 2 I 2 dimer and display intense and tunable luminescence. Replacing Cu with Ag, and adding the second kind of organic ligand (Ph 3 P) tunes the emission color from red to yellow and results in significantly enhanced quantum yield. Density functional theory-based electronic structure calculations reveal the separate effects of the inorganic module and organic ligand on the electronic structure, confirming that bandgap, optical absorption, and emission properties of these phosphors can be systemically and deliberately tuned by metal substitution and organic ligands cooperation. The emerging understanding of composition-structure-property relations in this family provides powerful design tools toward new compounds for general lighting applications.

Phosphorene, monolayer or few-layer black phosphorus, exhibits fascinating anisotropic properties and shows interesting semiconducting behavior. The synthesis of phosphorene nanosheets is still a hot topic, including the shaping of its two-dimensional structure into nanoribbons or nanobelts. Here we report electrochemical unzipping of single crystalline black phosphorus into zigzag-phosphorene nanobelts, as well as nanosheets and quantum dots, via an oxygen-driven mechanism. The experimental results agree well with our theoretical calculations. The calculation for the unzipping mechanism study suggests that interstitial oxygen-pairs are the critical intermediate species for generating zigzag-phosphorene nanobelts. Although phosphorene oxidation has been reported, lengthwise cutting is hitherto unreported. Our discovery of phosphorene cut upon oxidation represents a previously unknown mechanism for the formation of various dimensions of phosphorene nanostructures, especially zigzag-phosphorene nanobelts. It opens up a way for studying the quantum effects and electronic properties of zigzag-phosphorene nanobelts.

Hybrid manganese halides have attracted widespread attention because of their highly emissive optical properties. To understand the underlying structural factors that dictate the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of these materials, we report five new hybrid manganese bromides with the general formula A m MnBr 4 [ m = 1 or 2, A = dimethylammonium (DMA), 3-methylpiperidinium (3MP), 3-aminomethylpiperidinium (3AMP), heptamethylenimine (HEP), and trimethylphenylammonium (TMPEA)]. By studying the crystal structures and optical properties of these materials and combining our results with the findings from previously reported analogs, we have found a direct correlation between Mn···Mn distance and the PLQY, where high PLQYs are associated with long Mn···Mn distances. This effect can be viewed as a manifestation of the concentration-quenching effect, except these are in stoichiometric compounds with precise interatomic distances rather than random alloys. To gain better separation of the Mn centers and prevent energy transfer, a bulky singly protonated cation that avoids H-bonding is ideal. We have demonstrated this principle in one of our newly reported material, (TMPEA) 2 MnBr 4 , where a PLQY of 70.8% for a powder sample and 98% for a large single crystal sample is achieved. Our study reveals a generalized method for improving PLQYs in hybrid manganese bromides and is readily extended to designing all varieties of highly emissive hybrid materials.

There has been a great deal of recent interest in extended compounds containing Ru 3+ and Ru 4+ in light of their range of unusual physical properties. Many of these properties are displayed in compounds with the perovskite and related structures. Here we report an array of structurally diverse hybrid ruthenium halide perovskites and related compounds: MA 2 RuX 6 (X=Cl or Br), MA 2 MRuX 6 (M=Na, K or Ag; X=Cl or Br) and MA 3 Ru 2 X 9 (X=Br) based upon the use of methylammonium (MA=CH 3 NH 3 + ) on the perovskite A site. The compounds MA 2 RuX 6 with Ru 4+ crystallize in the trigonal space group R 3 ‾ m and can be described as vacancy-ordered double-perovskites. The ordered compounds MA 2 MRuX 6 with M + and Ru 3+ crystallize in a structure related to BaNiO 3 with alternating MX 6 and RuX 6 face-shared octahedra forming linear chains in the trigonal P 3 ‾ m space group. The compound MA 3 Ru 2 Br 9 crystallizes in the orthorhombic Cmcm space group and displays pairs of face-sharing octahedra forming isolated Ru 2 Br 9 moieties with very short Ru-Ru contacts of 2.789 Å. The structural details, including the role of hydrogen bonding and dimensionality, as well as the optical and magnetic properties of these compounds are described. Bismuth trihalides, BiX 3 (X = F, Cl, Br, and I), have been thrust into prominence recently because of their close chemical relationship to the halide perovskites of lead, which exhibit remarkable performance as active layers in photovoltaic cells and other optoelectronic devices. In the present work, we have used calculations based on density functional theory to explore the energetics and electronic properties of BiX 3 in a variety of known and hypothetical structure types. The results for BiX 3 are compared with those obtained for the halides of the later rare earths, represented by YX 3 and LuX 3 . The relative thermodynamic stabilities of the known and hypothetical structures are calculated, along with their band gaps. For the BiX 3 systems, we have explored the role of lone-pair effects associated with bismuth(III), and for BiI 3 , we have compared the predicted structural behavior as a function of pressure with the available experimental data. We have also attempted to synthesize LuF 3 in the perovskite-related ReO 3 -type structure, which is predicted to be only ∼7.7 kJ mol -1 above the convex hull. This attempt was unsuccessful but led to the discovery of a new hydrated phase, (H 3 O)Lu 3 F 10 H 2 O, which is isomorphous with the known ytterbium analogue.

Materials with the perovskite ABX 3 structure play a major role across materials chemistry and physics as a consequence of their ubiquity and wide range of useful properties. ReO 3 -type structures can be described as ABX 3 perovskites in which the A-cation site is unoccupied, giving rise to the general composition BX 3 , where B is typically a cation and X is a bridging anion. The chemical diversity of such structures is extensive, ranging from simple oxides and fluorides, such as WO 3 and AlF 3 , to complex structures in which the bridging anion is polyatomic, such as in the Prussian blue-related cyanides Fe(CN) 3 and CoPt(CN) 6 . The same ReO 3 -type structure is found in metal-organic frameworks, for example, ln (im) 3 (im = imidazolate) and the well-known MOF-5 structure, where the B-site cation is polyatomic. The extended 3D connectivity and openness of this structure type leads to compounds with interesting and often unusual properties. Notable among these properties are negative thermal expansion (for example, ScF 3 ), photocatalysis (for example, CoSn(OH) 6 ), thermoelectricity (for example, CoAs 3 ) and superconductivity in a phase that is controversially described as SH 3 with a doubly interpenetrating ReO 3 structure. Hybrid halide double perovskites are a class of compounds attracting growing interest because of their richness of structure and property. Two-dimensional (2D) derivatives of hybrid double perovskites are formed by the incorporation of organic spacer cations into three-dimensional (3D) double perovskites. Here, we report a series of seven new layered double perovskite halides with propylammonium (PA), octylammonium (OCA), and 1,4-butyldiammonium (BDA) cations. The general formulas of the compounds are A m M I M III X 8 (single-layered Ruddlesden-Popper type with m = 4 and A = PA or OCA, and single-layered Dion-Jacobson type with m = 2 and A = BDA, M I = Ag, M III = In or Bi, X = Cl or Br) and PA 2 Cs M I M III Br 7 (bilayered, with M I = Ag, M III = In or Bi). These families of compounds demonstrate great versatility, with tunable layer thickness, the ability to vary the interlayer spacing, and the ability to selectively tune the band gap by varying the M I and M III cations along with the halide anions. The band gap of the single-layered materials varies from 2.41 eV for PA 4 AgBiBr 8 to 3.96 eV for PA 4 AgInCl 8 . Photoluminescent emission spectra of the layered double perovskites at low-temperature (100 K) are reported, and density functional theory electronic structure calculations are presented to understand the nature of the band gap evolution. The development of new structural and compositions in layered double perovskite halides enhances the understanding of structure-property relations in this important family.

Manganese (Mn)-based compounds are important materials for both energy conversion and energy storage. Unfortunately, it has been a significant challenge to develop highly ordered microporous/mesoporous structures for them to provide more active sites for these applications. In order to do so using the soft-templating method, three conditions have to be met, namely, a strong interaction between the inorganic precursor and the organic templates; eliminating the formation of bulk manganese phosphate; and the preservation of the manganese phosphate framework without it collapsing upon template removal. Herein, a soft-templating approach is reported using an organophosphonic acid (n-hexylphosphonic acid) as both the etching and the templating agent, followed by high-vacuum-assisted annealing. This approach simultaneously satisfies the above conditions. Both microporous and mesoporous manganese phosphates with uniform pore sizes and well-defined pore structures are obtained. The utilization of the organophosphonic acid is shown to be the key in the transformation from bulk manganese oxide into a highly ordered microporous phosphate. A very high surface area of 304.1 m 2 g -1 is obtained for the microporous manganese phosphate, which is the highest among the reported values for Mn-based compounds. The complete 31P NMR chemical shift tensors for 22 inorganic phosphates obtained from ab initio computation are found to correspond closely to experimentally obtained parameters. Further improvement was found when structures determined by diffraction were geometry optimized. Besides aiding in spectral assignment, the cases where correspondence is significantly improved upon geometry optimization point to the crystal structures requiring correction.

In a search for Pb-free photovoltaic materials, a double perovskite Cs2AgSbBr6 with an indirect optical bandgap of 1.64 eV has been synthesized. Single crystal X-ray diffraction determined the space group as Fm3[combining macron]m with a = 11.1583(7) Å. The black, as-synthesised compound turned brown after heat treatment at 480 K while the symmetry and crystallinity were preserved. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicated the existence of Sb5+ in the black crystals, suggesting that the dark colour arises from the Sb3+-Sb5+ charge transfer. Furthermore, UV visible spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations have been applied to probe the optical properties and electronic structure.

Geometric or electronic confinement of guests inside nanoporous hosts promises to deliver unusual catalytic or opto-electronic functionality from existing materials but is challenging to obtain particularly using metastable hosts, such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Reagents (e.g. precursor) may be too large for impregnation and synthesis conditions may also destroy the hosts. Here we use thermodynamic Pourbaix diagrams (favorable redox and pH conditions) to describe a general method for metal-compound guest synthesis by rationally selecting reaction agents and conditions. Specifically we demonstrate a MOF-confined RuO 2 catalyst (RuO 2 @MOF-808-P) with exceptionally high catalytic CO oxidation below 150 °C as compared to the conventionally made SiO 2 -supported RuO 2 (RuO 2 /SiO 2 ). This can be caused by weaker interactions between CO/O and the MOF-encapsulated RuO 2 surface thus avoiding adsorption-induced catalytic surface passivation. We further describe applications of the Pourbaix-enabled guest synthesis (PEGS) strategy with tutorial examples for the general synthesis of arbitrary guests (e.g. metals, oxides, hydroxides, sulfides).

Trivalent metal hypophosphites with the general formula M(H2PO2)3 (M = V, Al, Ga) adopt the ReO3 structure, with each compound displaying two structural polymorphs. High-pressure synchrotron X-ray studies reveal a pressure-driven phase transition in Ga(H2PO2)3 that can be understood on the basis of ab initio thermodynamics.

Pure metal-organic framework (MOF) layers deposited on porous supports are important candidates for molecular sieving membranes, but their performance usually deviates from theoretical estimations. Here, we combine step-wise scanning electron microscopy imaging, time-resolved synchrotron X-ray scattering, terahertz infrared spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculation to investigate the ZIF-8 membrane formation on two types (polydopamine and TiO 2 ) of functionalized porous supports. Though molecular sieving of ZIF-8 membranes for smaller gases (He, H 2 , and CO 2 ) can be achieved with both types of functionalized supports, we unravel that the strong interaction between MOF and polydopamine can disrupt the formation of "perfect" MOF crystals at the interface, leading to a "contracted" MOF structure with partially uncoordinated imidazolate ligands. This further affects the low-frequency dynamical parameters of the framework and inhibits the effective seeded growth. Eventually, it leads to an unexpected loss of selectivity for the bulkier gases (N 2 and CH 4 ) for ZIF-8 on polydopamine-functionalized supports. This work links the dynamical aspects of MOFs with their gas transport behavior and highlights the importance of regulating the interfacial weak forces to preserve the ideal molecular sieving efficiency of MOF membranes, which also provides guidance for defect engineering of MOF film fabrication for sensing and electronic devices beyond membranes.

Perovskite-derived hybrid platinum iodides with the general formula A2PtIVI6 (A = formamidinium FA and guanidinium GUA) accommodate excess I2 to yield hydrogen-bond-stabilized compounds where the I2 forms catenates with I- anions on the PtI6 octahedra.

Membranes are recognized as a key component in many environment and energy-related applications, but conventional membranes are challenged to satisfy the growing demand for ever more energy-efficient processes. Janus membranes, a novel class with asymmetric properties on each side, have recently emerged and represent enticing opportunities to address this challenge. With an inner driving force arising from their asymmetric configuration, Janus membranes are appealing for enhancing energy efficiency in a variety of membrane processes by promoting the desired transport. Here, the fundamental principles to prepare Janus membranes with asymmetric surface wettability and charges are summarized, and how they work in conventional and unconventional membrane processes is demonstrated., (© 2018 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We describe the solid-state structural evolution in four hybrid hexaiodoplatinate(IV) compounds, demonstrating the increasingly important role that extended hydrogen bonding plays in directing the structure across the series. The compounds are A 2 PtI 6 , where A is one of the following amines: ammonium, NH 4 + ; methylammonium, CH 3 NH 3 + ; formamidinium, CH(NH 2 ) 2 + ; guanidinium, C(NH 2 ) 3 + . These are closely related in structure and properties to the hybrid halide perovskites of lead(II) that have recently established their prowess in optoelectronics. The first three of these compounds crystallize in the vacancy-ordered double perovskite A 2 Pt□I 6 (□ indicates a vacant site) structure in the K 2 PtCl 6 archetype, despite the relatively large perovskite tolerance factors involved. The last compound, (GUA) 2 PtI 6 , crystallizes in a vacancy-ordered variant of the hexagonal CsNiCl 3 structure: the K 2 MnF 6 structure. A combination of solid-state 195 Pt and 1 H NMR spectroscopy and detailed density functional theory calculations helps to reveal structural trends and establish the hydrogen-bonding tendencies. The calculations and measured optical properties support the surprising observation in these iodosalt compounds that, for smaller A cations, the conduction bands are considerably disperse, despite lacking extended I-Pt-I connectivity.

Following the recent discovery of a new family of hybrid ABX 3 perovskites where X=(H 2 POO) - (hypophosphite), this work reports a facile synthesis for mixed X-site formate perovskites of composition [GUA]Mn(HCOO) 3-x (H 2 POO) x , with two crystallographically distinct, partially ordered intermediate phases with x=0.84 and 1.53, corresponding to ca. 30 and 50 mol % hypophosphite, respectively. The driving forces for the phase transitions of ABX 3 hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites have been limited to the octahedral tilting, order-disorder, and displacement. Now, a complex structural phase transition has been explored in a HOIP, [CH 3 NH 3 ][Mn(N 3 ) 3 ], based on structural characterizations and ab initio lattice dynamics calculations. This unusual first-order phase transition between two ordered phases at about 265 K is primarily driven by changes in the collective atomic vibrations of the whole lattice, along with concurrent molecular displacements and an unusual octahedral tilting. A significant entropy difference (4.35 J K -1  mol -1 ) is observed between the low- and high-temperature structures induced by such atomic vibrations, which plays a main role in driving the transition. More than 20 000 MOFs have been reported to date, with different combinations of metal ions/centers and organic linkers, and they can be grown into various 3D, 2D, 1D and 0D morphologies. The flexibility in control over varying length scales from atomic scale up to bulk structure allows access to an almost endless variety of MOF-based and MOF-derived materials. Indeed, MOFs themselves have been studied as a class of useful functional materials. More remarkably, extensive research conducted in recent years has shown that MOFs are exceptionally good precursors for a large variety of nanohybrids as active materials in both electrocatalysis and energy storage. As they already contain both carbon and well-dispersed metal atoms, MOFs can be converted to conductive carbons decorated with active metal species and doping elements through appropriate pyrolysis. Due to the great diversity accessible in the composition, structure, and morphology of MOFs, several types of MOF-derived nanohybrids are now among the best performing materials both for electrocatalysts and electrodes in various energy conversion and storage devices. In addition to mesoporous nano-carbons, both doped and undoped, carbon-metal nanohybrids, and carbon-compound nanohybrids, there are several types of core@shell, encapsulated nanostructures, embedded nanosystems and heterostructures that have been developed from MOFs recently. They can be made in either free-standing forms, nano- or micro-powders, grown on appropriate conducting substrates, or assembled together with other active materials. During the MOF to active material conversion, other active species or precursors can be inserted into the MOF-derived nanostructures or assembled on surfaces, leading to uniquely new porous nanostructures. These MOF-derived active materials for electrocatalysis and energy storage are nanohybrids consisting of more than functional components that are purposely integrated together at desired length scales for much-improved performance. This article reviews the current status of these nanohybrids and concludes with a brief perspective on the future of MOF-derived functional materials.

Three-dimensional carbon-based structures have proven useful for tailoring material properties in structural mechanical and energy storage applications. One approach to obtain them has been by carbonization of selected metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with catalytic metals, but this is not applicable to most common MOF structures. Here, we present a strategy to transform common MOFs, by guest inclusions and high-temperature MOF-guest interactions, into complex carbon-based, diatom-like, hierarchical structures (named for the morphological similarities with the naturally existing diatomaceous species). As an example, we introduce metal salt guests into HKUST-1-type MOFs to generate a family of carbon-based nano-diatoms with two to four levels of structural hierarchy. We report control of the morphology by simple changes in the chemistry of the MOF and guest, with implications for the formation mechanisms. We demonstrate that one of these structures has unique advantages as a fast-charging lithium-ion battery anode. The tunability of composition should enable further studies of reaction mechanisms and result in the growth of a myriad of unprecedented carbon-based structures from the enormous variety of currently available MOF-guest candidates.
