The antifungal and antimycotoxigenic activities of the essential oils (EO) from Cuminum cyminum and Laurus nobilis, and their respective principal compounds, cuminaldehyde and 1,8-cineole, were evaluated against fungi of the genus Aspergillus: A.carbonarius, A.niger, A.ochraceus and A.westerdijkiae. The antifungal activity was determined by the contact method and the mycelial growth of the fungi was evaluated. Scanning Electron Microscopic (SEM) images were obtained to suggest modes of action of the compounds analyzed. The antimycotoxigenic activity was determined by HPLC. A.carbonarius was completely inhibited by cumin EO (500 µL L-1), by laurel EO and by cuminaldehyde (5000 µL L-1). The cumin EO (500 µL L-1) completely inhibited the growth of A.niger. All the samples inhibited the mycelial growth of A.ochraceus, especially cumin EO and cuminaldehyde (250 µL L-1). A.westerdijkiae was completely inhibited by cumin EO and cuminaldehyde (1000 µL L-1), by laurel EO and 1,8-cineole (10000 µL L-1). A decrease in the production of ochratoxin A (OTA) was observed post-treatment, except in A. ochraceus, only inhibited by laurel EO. SEM images showed morphological changes in fungal structures and spore inhibition post-treatment. Supervised field trial studies were conducted to understand dissipation kinetics and harvest time residues of a combination product of fluxapyroxad and pyraclostrobin in cumin plant/leaves and seeds at different locations in India. The results showed initial accumulation of fluxapyroxad at the levels of 15.4 and 20.2 mg kg -1 and pyraclostrobin at the level of 21.2 and 33.4 mg kg -1 in cumin leaves/plant in Anand, Gujarat. Fluxapyroxad and pyraclostrobin followed zero-order and first-order dissipation kinetics in cumin plant/leaves samples respectively. The residues translocated to cumin seeds. As the hazard quotient (HQ) was <1 in all cases consumer health risk may be negligible.

Because of the medical importance of cumin as well as it being one of the food additives to many Saudi dishes, there was a need to study the fungal load of this type of spice. This study aimed to determine the mycological profile of the retail black and green cumin distributed in different markets at western region, Saudi Arabia, using the dilution plat method on dichloran 18% glycerol (DG18) agar and incubation at 25°C. Using morphological criteria and molecular markers (internal transcribed spacer sequence), 39 species belonging to 18 genera were collected from different black cumin (33 species belonging to 17 genera) and green cumin (25 species belonging to 9 genera). Alternaria alternata, Aspergillus flavus, A. niger, A. ochraceus, Cladosporium cladosporioides, and Stemphylium botryosum were the most prevalent. Black cumin harbors fungal counts reaching 545 colony-forming units (CFU)/g, while green cumin included 500 CFU/g. Also, the natural occurrence of aflatoxins and ochratoxin A was also measured. Seventy-two cumin samples (90% of tested samples) showed toxin contamination. Aflatoxins and ochratoxin A ranged from 9.35 to 3.9 PPB in black cumin samples and from 4.08 to 5.75 PPB in green cumin samples.

An experimental setup was developed for simulating the field conditions to determine the force and power required for cutting cumin crops in dynamic conditions. The effect of cutter bar speeds, forward speeds, and blade type on cutting force and power requirement for cutting cumin were also studied. Experiments were carried out at three levels: cutter bar speeds, forward speeds, and blade type. The results showed that all the factors significantly affected cutting force. The cutting force followed a decreasing trend with the increase in cutter bar speed. Whereas it followed an increasing trend with the increase in forward speed. The maximum cutting force for all three blades was observed at a cutter bar speed of 2.00 strokes.s -1 and forward speed of 0.46 m.s -1 . The idle power and actual power required for cutting the cumin crop were also determined based on the cutting force. The results obtained were validated by the power drawn from the power source while operating the cutter bar blades. The R 2 values for Blade-B1, Blade-B2, and Blade-B3 were 0.90, 0.82, and 0.88, respectively. The cutting force was primarily affected by the cutter bar speed, resulting in PCR values of 74.20%, 82.32%, and 81.75% for Blade-B1, Blade-B2, and Blade-B3, respectively, followed by the forward speed, which also had an impact on PCR values of 16.60%, 15.27%, and 18.25% for Blade-B1, Blade-B2, and Blade-B3, respectively. The cutting force for Blade-B1, Blade-B2, and Blade-B3 varied from 15.96 to 58.97 N, 21.08 to 76.64 N, and 30.22 to 85.31, respectively, for the selected range of cutter bar speed and forward speed. This study was performed to check the effect of different essential oils on chitosan and gelatin-based antimicrobial films. Films prepared from biopolymers contain better mechanical strength but lack in moisture barrier properties. In order to increase the moisture barrier properties of chitosan and gelatin-based films in the current research work, different essential oils, i.e., thyme, cinnamon, basil, ginger, and cumin, at varying concentrations (1.0, 1.5, and 2.0%) were incorporated. Moreover, the concentrations of glycerol (plasticizer) and emulsifier (Tween 20) were kept constant to maintain homogeneity in the research. Antimicrobial films composed of gelatin and chitosan infused with essential oils were evaluated for their physicochemical (emulsion stability, particle size, and viscosity), FT-IR, microstructural (scanning electron microscopy), moisture barrier (water vapor permeability), and antimicrobial properties ( E. coli , Salmonella , and S. aureus ). Study outcomes elucidated significant variations ( p < 0.05) as the concentration of essential oil was increased in the film solutions. An increased concentration of essential oil (2.0%) significantly enhanced the moisture barrier properties (1.12 ± 0.03 g.mm/kPa.h.m 2 ). Nevertheless, the tensile strength decreased (38.60 ± 1.4 to 31.50 ± 1.5 MPa) from 1 to 2%. The increase in essential oil concentration in the emulsion-based films also influenced their physicochemical characteristics, such as droplet size, viscosity, and emulsion stability. At lower concentrations (1.0%), films exhibited a uniform microstructure but lacked moisture barrier properties. Antimicrobial properties against E. coli , Salmonella , and S. aureus showed an increased inhibition effect as the concentration of essential oil was increased. Of the essential oil-based films, ginger- and basil-based films showed greater inhibition effects as compared to the other essential oils. Overall, antimicrobial films containing a 1.5% concentration of ginger and basil oil showed better results as compared to the other treatments for mechanical, moisture barrier, and antimicrobial properties, while films with a 2.0% oil concentration showed better antimicrobial and moisture barrier properties but lacked in mechanical properties. Lead (Pb) can disrupt plant gene expression, modify metabolite contents, and influence the growth of plants. Cuminum cyminum L. is highly adaptable to adversity, but molecular mechanism by which it responds to Pb stress is unknown. For this study, transcriptomic and metabolomic sequencing was performed on root tissues of C. cyminum under Pb stress. Our results showed that high Pb stress increased the activity of peroxidase (POD), the contents of malondialdehyde (MDA) and proline by 80.03 %, 174.46 % and 71.24 %, respectively. Meanwhile, Pb stress decreased the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) as well as contents of soluble sugars and GSH, which thus affected the growth of C. cyminum. In addition, Pb stress influenced the accumulation and transport of Pb in C. cyminum. Metabolomic results showed that Pb stress affected eight metabolic pathways involving 108 differentially expressed metabolites, primarily amino acids, organic acids, and carbohydrates. The differentially expressed genes identified through transcriptome analysis were mainly involved the oxidation reductase activity, transmembrane transport, phytohormone signaling, and MAPK signaling pathway. Objectives: This study aimed to compare the effects of green cumin (Cuminum cyminum) and nettle (Urtica dioica L.) oral drops on the indicators of breast milk adequacy in lactating mothers. Due to the presence of phytoestrogens in the combinations of cumin and nettle, it is stipulated that they may have milk-increasing properties., Methods: A triple-blind, randomised, controlled clinical trial was conducted on 117 lactating mothers who had given birth to healthy infants aged 10-15 days and who received cumin oral drops (n = 39), nettle oral drops (n = 39) or placebo (n = 39) from August 2020 to March 2021. The participants were recruited from a regional public health care centre affiliated with Iran University of Medical Sciences of Tehran, Tehran, Iran. The 3 study groups received 15 drops thrice a day for 4 weeks. Infant weight, breastfeeding frequency, number of wet diapers, diaper weight and frequency of infant defecation were evaluated before and after the intervention., Results: At the beginning of the trial, no statistically significant differences were observed between the 3 groups for infant weight ( P = 0.891), breastfeeding frequency ( P = 0.921), number of wet diapers ( P = 0.783), diaper weight ( P = 0.841) and frequency of infant defecation ( P = 0.898). However, following the intervention, the mean scores of all indicators were significantly higher in the experimental groups than in the placebo group ( P <0.001). Cumin (Cuminum cyminum L.), is an important export-oriented seed spice crop for India. Cumin is popularly used for flavouring food, including soups, pickles and vegetables, and for herbal medicine. India is the largest producer, consumer and exporter of cumin seed with an annual production of 0.795 million tones over an area of 1.09 million hectares. During 2020-21, India exported about 0.299 million tons of cumin worth of Rs 33280 million (Anonymous, 2021). Recently, phytoplasma suspected symptoms were observed in cumin at Agricultural Research Station, Mandor, Jodhpur, Rajasthan, India from 2019. The symptoms related to phytoplasma infection were first recorded after 70-75 days of sowing in the month of January of the years 2019 to 2022. The major symptoms recorded were yellowing, phyllody, witches-broom, yellowing and deformed elongated seeds. Disease incidence was recorded as 0.25-1.0%, 0.5-1.5%, 0.5-2.5 % and 0.5-10.6% during the years 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022, respectively using quadrate method. In 2022, among different genotypes assessed GC 4, MCU 73, MCU 105, and MCU 32 exhibited lower disease incidences ranging from 0.5% to 1.5%, while MCU 78 recorded the highest disease incidence at 10.6%. To detect the association of phytoplasma with symptomatic cumin samples, genomic DNA was extracted from four representative cumin genotypes (CuPP-MND-01 to CuPP-MND-04) and one asymptomatic cumin plant using the Qiagen DNeasy plant mini kit (Germany). The extracted DNA was amplified using nested PCR assays with universal phytoplasma detection primers for 16S rRNA gene (P1/P7 and R16F2n/R16R2) (Schneider et al., 1995; Gundersen and Lee, 1996) and secA gene specific primers (SecAfor1/SecArev3 followed by nested PCR primers SecAfor5/ SecArev2) (Hodgetts et al. 2008; Bekele et al. 2011). The amplicons of ∼1.25 kb with 16S rRNA gene and ∼600 bp with secA gene specific primers were amplified in all symptomatic cumin plant samples and positive control of brinjal little leaf. PCR amplified products from the four selected positive samples (CuPP-MND-01 to CuPP-MND-04) of 16S rRNA gene and secA gene, were sequenced from both ends. The 1,245 bp sequences were deposited in GenBank (OQ299007-10), which showed 100% sequence identity with each other and 99.4% identity with 'Candidatus Phytoplasma citri' reference strain (GenBank accession: U15442) (Rodrigues Jardim et al. 2023). The phylogenetic analysis and virtual RFLP analysis using 17 restriction enzymes of 16S rRNA gene sequences through iPhyclassifier allowed affiliating the cumin phytoplasma strains with 16SrII-C subgroup strain with a similarity coefficient of 1 to the reference pattern of 16Sr group II, subgroup C (GenBank accession: AJ293216) (Zhao et al. 2009). In addition, the phylogenetic analysis of the secA gene-based sequences (OQ305073-76) further confirmed the close association of 16SrII-C group phytoplasmas with phyllody and witches' broom disease of cumin. Earlier 16SrII-C subgroup phytoplasma has been reported from various crops and weeds in India (Rao et al. 2021). However, no phytoplasma association has been reported earlier with cumin in India and abroad. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the association of 16SrII-C group phytoplasma causing phyllody, witches' broom in cumin genotypes. This report has economic and epidemiological implications and needs immediate attention to reduce export losses due to phytoplasma disease in cumin and to prevent the potential spread to other crops.

Nigella sativa is an herbal therapy for various afflictions. It has some potential to be a promising option as an efficacious treatment for COVID-19 patients that can contribute to global healthcare as a relatively cheap therapy but evidence of its use from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) is limited. Therefore, to explore the effect of N. sativa in combating COVID-19, we undertook this meta-analysis. We searched several databases to retrieve all RCTs investigating N. sativa for the treatment of COVID-19 as compared to placebo or standard care. We used RevMan 5.4 for all analyses with risk ratio (RR) or odds ratio (OR) as the effect measures. We included a total of seven RCTs in this review. N. sativa significantly reduced the risk of all-cause mortality in patients with COVID-19 compared to the control group (RR 0.27, 95% CI: 0.10 to 0.72; I 2  = 0%). N. sativa significantly reduced the rate of viral PCR positivity (RR 0.62, 95% CI: 0.39 to 0.97; I 2  = 0%). We did not find any significant difference in the risk of hospitalization (RR 0.26, 95% CI: 0.04 to 1.54; I 2  = 0%) and the rate of no recovery (OR 0.48, 95% CI: 0.20 to 1.15; I 2  = 84%) between the two groups. N. sativa is an easily available herbal medicine that may decrease the risk of mortality and improve virological clearance in COVID-19 patients. However, our results are limited by the small number of RCTs available. Skeletal muscle atrophy is a disorder characterized by reductions in muscle size and strength. Cumin extract (CE) possesses anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and hypoglycemic properties. Its pharmaceutical applications are hindered by its low water solubility and by its cytotoxicity when administered at high doses. In this study, we have developed a simplified water distillation method using a rotary evaporator to isolate the active components in cumin seeds. The anti-inflammatory effects of CE and its potential to ameliorate skeletal muscle atrophy in rats with streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes were evaluated. The half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC 50 ) of CE for cells was 80 μM. By encapsulating CE in chitosan nanoparticles (CECNs), an encapsulation efficacy of 87.1% was achieved with a slow release of 90% of CE after 24 h of culturing, resulting in CECNs with significantly reduced cytotoxicity (IC 50 , 1.2 mM). Both CE and CECNs significantly reduced the inflammatory response in interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-1β assays. STZ-induced diabetic rats exhibited sustained high blood glucose levels (>16.5 mmol/L), small and damaged pancreatic β islets, and skeletal muscle atrophy. CE and CECN treatments ameliorated skeletal muscle atrophy, recovered muscle fiber striated appearance, increased grip strength, and decreased IL-6 level. Furthermore, CE and CECNs led to a reduction of damage to the pancreas, restoring its morphological phenotype, increasing serum insulin levels, and lowering blood glucose levels in STZ-induced diabetic rats. Taken together, treatment with CECNs over a 6-week period yielded positive ameliorative effects in STZ-induced rats of muscle atrophy.

Trace minerals are essential for the normal functioning of all living organisms. In addition, the positive effects of several medicinal plants have been demonstrated in aquaculture. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the effects of a mixture of medicinal plants and test the synergistic effects of medicinal plants and chelated minerals on fish growth and immunity. Thus, in the present experiment we evaluated the combined effects of a commercial chelated mineral source (BonzaFish®) and a mixture of 4 medicinal plants including caraway (Carum carvi), green cumin (Cuminum cyminum), dill (Anethum graveolens), and anise (Pimpinella anisum). Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) fingerlings (n = 225) were fed with five formulated diets, including a control diet (basal diet), Bonza (basal diet + 1 g/kg BonzaFish®), Z-5 (basal diet + 1 g/kg BonzaFish® + 5 g/kg mixture of plant seeds), Z-10 (basal diet + 1 g/kg BonzaFish®+10 g/kg mixture of plant seeds), Z-20 (basal diet+1 g/kg BonzaFish®+20 g/kg mixture of plant seeds) for 6 weeks. In diets including BonzaFish®, 50% of the inorganic mineral premix was replaced by BonzaFish®. Results revealed that fish receiving the Z-20 diet showed the best performance in terms of growth parameters, followed by the Bonza treatment (P < 0.05). The highest protease activity was found in Z-5 and Z-10. RBCs were highest in Z-5, while the highest WBCs and hemoglobin were found in the Bonza treatment followed by Z-20. Stress biomarkers were lowest in the Z-20 treatment. Results showed that Z-20 could elicit the most robust immunological responses of lysozyme activity, ACH50, total Ig, C3, and C4. In this research, we present a prototype optical system that offers significant advances in detecting hydrochloric acid (HCl) and ammonia (NH3) vapors. The system utilizes a natural pigment sensor based on Curcuma longa that is securely attached to a glass surface support. Through extensive development and testing with HCl (37% aqueous solution) and NH 3 (29% aqueous solution) solutions, we have successfully demonstrated the effectiveness of our sensor. To facilitate the detection process, we have developed an injection system that exposes C. longa pigment films to the targeted vapors. The interaction between the vapors and the pigment films triggers a distinct color change, which is then analyzed by the detection system. By capturing the transmission spectra of the pigment film, our system allows a precise comparison of these spectra at different concentrations of the vapors. Our proposed sensor exhibits remarkable sensitivity, allowing the detection of HCl at a concentration of 0.009 ppm using only 100 µL (2.3 mg) of pigment film. In addition, it can detect NH 3 at a concentration of 0.03 ppm with a 400 µL (9.2 mg) pigment film. Integrating C. longa as a natural pigment sensor in an optical system opens up new possibilities for detecting hazardous gases. The simplicity and efficiency of our system, combined with its sensitivity, make it an attractive tool in environmental monitoring and industrial safety applications.

Helicobacter pylori causes gastritis, peptic ulcers and gastric cancer and affects more than half of the world's population. Although this infection can have serious consequences, no novel cure or remedy have been discovered, the present therapy still relies on a variety of known antibiotics and anti-secretory agents. In the present study, the potential effect of combinations between methanolic extracts of four Algerian medicinal plants, garlic ( Allium sativum ), red onion ( Allium cepa ), cumin ( Cuminum cyminum L.) and fenugreek ( T. foenum-graecum L.), with different strains of lactic acid bacteria against H. pylori , was investigated. Similarly, the in vivo antibacterial effect of fenugreek extract combined with Bifidobacterium breve on H. pylori colonization potential to confirm the enhanced effect of the mixture was explored. Helicobacter pylori was inhibited by all combined mixtures of extracts and probiotics with varying results. The highest anti- H. pylori activities were found in fenugreek/ B. breve , cumin/ B. breve , garlic/ B. breve and onion/ B. breve combinations with inhibition diameters of 29, 26, 23 and 25 mm, respectively. Preliminary studies on the effect of probiotics against H. pylori revealed that the inhibition was due to lactic acid and bacteriocins and it was also related to the presence of phenolic compounds in the studied plants, such as gallic acid, caffeic acid, quercetin and vanillic acid. Fenugreek extract was found to inhibit the growth of H. pylori in a concentration-dependent manner. When H. pylori -infected rats were administered B. breve , the infection rate of H. pylori was significantly reduced, while the combination of B. breve and fenugreek extract effectively inhibited H. pylori . In addition, the B. breve and fenugreek extract mixture significantly reduced gastritis in H. pylori -infected rats. These results suggest that this complex mixture may be an alternative to treating diseases caused by H. pylori infection.

Retardation of quality loss of seafood has been a new concept in recent years. This study's main objective was to evaluate the microbial, chemical, and sensory attributes of shrimp coated with alginate sodium nanoparticles containing Zataria multiflora and Cuminum cyminum essential oils (EOs) during refrigerated storage. At the end of storage time (15 days storage at 4°C), the pH, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), and total volatile basic nitrogen (TVBN) amounts in shrimps coated with the alginate nanoparticles were 7.62, 1.14 mg MDA/kg, and 117 mg/100 g which were significantly ( p  < .05) lower than the control groups. The count of all bacteria groups was also lower in this treatment, which was 2-2.74 Log CFU/mL on day 15 of cold storage. This combined treatment also obtained the highest sensory scores (around 7) and the lowest melanosis score (2.67) due to the effective delaying microbial and oxidation activities. Essential oils have been proposed as promising non-toxic transdermal permeation enhancers. Their use is limited because of their low water solubility. The use of nanotechnology-based strategies is one of the ways to overcome this limitation. This study aimed to explore the transdermal permeation enhancing capability of cumin essential oil in nanoemulgel systems containing diclofenac sodium. Cumin essential oil nanoemulsion was produced by high-pressure homogenization technique. The formulation was optimized by changing HLB values in a range of 9.65-16.7 using different surfactant mixtures, namely, Tween 20, Tween 80, and Span 80. Preparations were characterized by polydispersity index, droplet size, and zeta potential. Nanoemulsion with concentrations of 2 and 4% essential oil was incorporated into 0.75% Carbopol gel matrix to make nanoemulgel formulation, and its permeation enhancing effect was performed through Franz diffusion cells. Antinociceptive activities of the formulations were measured in thermal (tail-flick) and chemical (formalin) models of nociception in mice. Characterization exhibited that at HLB value of 9.65, the smallest particle size (82.20 ± 5.82 nm) was formed. By increasing the essential oil percentage in the nanoemulgel from 1 to 2%, the permeation of diclofenac increased from 28.39 ± 1.23 to 34.75 ± 1.07 µg/cm 2 at 24 h. The value of permeation from the simple gel (21.18 ± 2.51 µg/cm 2 ) and the marketed product (22.97 ± 1.92 µg/cm 2 ) was lower than the formulations containing essential oil. Nanoemulgel of diclofenac containing essential oil showed stronger antinociceptive effects in formalin and tail-flick tests than simple diclofenac gel and marketed formulation. In the present study, iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe 3 O 2 -NPs) synthesized from ginger (Zingiber officinale) and cumin seeds (Cuminum Cyminum L.) extracts were investigated to reveal their potential to enhance the growth and drought resistance of wheat plants under drought stress. In an In Vitro experiment, four different concentrations for Fe 3 O 2 -NPs (0.3 mM, 0.6 mM, 0.9 mM, and 1.2 mM) of ginger and cumin seeds were tested. Among all the concentrations tested, ginger Fe 3 O 2 -NPs (0.6 mM) and cumin seeds Fe 3 O 2 -NPs (1.2 mM) were more effective to enhance wheat germination, biomass, and survival percentage under drought stress and irrigated conditions than the non-treated control plant. In a pot experiment, wheat plants under induced water stress showed marked up-regulation in the biochemical resistance mechanisms when treated with ginger Fe 3 O 2 -NPs (0.6 mM) and cumin seeds Fe 3 O 2 -NPs (1.2 mM) than the non-treated control. Cumin seeds Fe 3 O 2 -NPs (1.2 mM) were more effective than ginger Fe 3 O 2 -NPs (0.6 mM) in ameliorating adverse effects of drought stress in wheat. Results demonstrated that cumin seeds Fe 3 O 2 -NPs (1.2 mM) exhibited a higher increase in chlorophyll a, b and carotenoids (72%, 265% and 96% respectively), proline (127%), superoxide dismutase (115%), peroxidase (43.8%), ascorbate peroxidase (44.6%). This also showed higher reduction in lipid peroxidation, electrolyte leakage and increased soluble sugars and total Fe content in the roots and shoots than non-treated plants under drought. Background: Until now, there is no method available for analysis of pesticide residues in complex matrices like spices. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop and validate a QuEChERS-based method for the estimation of 104 pesticides in cumin seed., Results: Samples were spiked for 109 pesticides at concentrations of 0.1, 0.5 and 1.0 mg kg -1 . Of these 104 pesticides were recovered. At 0.1, 0.5 and 0.1 mg kg -1 , recoveries ranged from 71% to 108% when compared with matrix matched standards. Seventeen pesticides showed higher or lower recoveries than acceptable range (70-120%) when quantified using solvent standards showing significant matrix effect (ME) (≥ ±20%) even after 20× dilution. However, for the other pesticides ME was significantly eliminated on dilution. The recovery percentage improved for all pesticides on quantitation with matrix matched standards when compared with solvent standards. For pesticides with lower European Union (EU) maximum residue limits (MRLs), an experiment at lower spiking concentrations of 0.01 and 0.05 mg kg -1 with lower dilutions (8×) reveals that almost all pesticides with lower EU MRLs (0.02 and 0.05 mg kg -1 ) showed recoveries in the range 74-124% and relative standard deviation (RSD) less than 20%., Conclusion: Theoretical limit of quantitation (LOQ) is proposed which ranged from 0.01 to 0.18 mg kg -1 for matrix matched standards. An LOQ of 0.01 mg kg -1 was easily achieved for the pesticides with lower EU MRLs with lower dilutions (8×) with exception of fipronil for which this can be achieved without dilution provided matrix matched standards are used. We aimed to evaluate the effect of Cuminum Cyminum (CC) supplementation on lipid profile and selected anthropometric parameters. PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase databases were systematically searched until May 2021. The random-effect model was used to study the effect sizes. The sources of heterogeneity were assessed using subgroup analysis and meta-regression. Publication bias was studied by funnel plots. The GRADE approach was used to assess the overall quality of the evidence.The data from our eight included studies have indicated that CC supplementation can lower body mass index (BMI) (WMD = -0.88 kg/m 2 ; 95%CI: -1.58, -0.18; p = .023) and total cholesterol (TC) (WMD = -3.96 mg/dl; 95%CI: -6.51, -1.04; p=.008). Also, after adjusting for publication bias, CC was shown to be effective in improving waist circumference (WC), high-density lipoprotein (HDL-C), and triglycerides (TG) levels. Although, the current evidence has not shown that CC supplementation can affect low-density lipoprotein (LDL-C), our subgroup analysis has indicated that CC supplementation with supplementation length of more than 8 weeks is associated with beneficial effects on LDL-C.While CC might be a suitable choice in managing BMI and TC, further high-quality studies are needed to confirm its efficacy in the clinical setting., (© 2021 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

Background: Numerous herbs are reported to have anti-hyperglycemic activity and are frequently used in combination with prescription drugs to lower the blood glucose levels in diabetic patients, without proper knowledge about the possibility of herb-drug interaction., Objectives: To investigate the effect of cumin and garden cress on pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamics (PD) of gliclazide (GLZ) in nicotinamide-streptozotocin diabetic model., Methods: Diabetic animals of groups II-IV were treated with GLZ, cumin, 'cumin + GLZ', garden cress and 'garden cress + GLZ'. Herb's treatments were given for two weeks, and GLZ was administered in a single dose. Blood glucose levels (BGLs) were measured at pre-determined time points. Plasma samples of pharmacokinetic study were analyzed using UPLC-MS/MS. GLZ fragment at m/z 324.1>127 was monitored., Results: Cumin and garden cress have shown 15.3% and 15.9% reduction in mean BGL (1-24h) (p-value < 0.001), respectively. GLZ reduced mean BGL by 30.0%, which was significantly better than cumin and garden cress (pvalue <0.05). Concurrently administered "garden cress + GLZ" demonstrated the highest reduction in mean BGL (by 40.46%) and showed a prolonged effect. There was no significant advantage of simultaneously administered 'cumin + GLZ'. Cumin did not affect PK of GLZ. Garden cress has significantly enhanced AUC 0-t (by 69.8%, pvalue 0.0013), but other PK parameters C max , T max , and Kel were close to the control group., Conclusion: PK/PD-based herb-drug interaction was observed. Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Cuminum Cyminum (CC) is a traditional herbal medicine using as an antiseptic, anti-carcinogenic, anti-mutagenic, anti-cancer, anti-hypertensive, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant. Recently hypoglycemic characteristics of CC have been indicated., Aim of the Study: We intended to conduct a meta-analysis on the effect of CC supplementation on glycemic parameters in patients with different chronic diseases., Materials and Methods: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus were searched until May 2021. Random effect model was conducted to perform the meta-analysis. Source of heterogeneity was explored using the meta-regression and subgroup analyses. The Cochrane Collaboration's tool was used to assess the quality of studies. The GRADE approach was used to assess the quality of evidence., Results: Findings of eight studies showed that CC supplementation reduced FBS (SMD = -1.4 mg/dl; 95 % CI: -2.29, -0.51; P = 0.002), HbA1c (SMD = -1.71 %; 95 % CI: -3.24, -0.18; P = 0.028), and HOMA-β (SMD = 0.46; 95 % CI: -0.62, 1.55; P = 0.404) significantly. Also, CC increased QUICKI level (SMD = 0.89; 95 % CI: 0.37, 1.4; P = 0.001. However, no significant effect of CC was observed on insulin (SMD = -0.70 μIU/dl; 95 % CI: -1.84, 0.45; P = 0.234) and HOMA-IR (SMD = 0.46; 95 % CI: -0.62, 1.55; P = 0.404)., Conclusion: CC had an improving effect on FBS, HbA1C, HOMA-B, and QUICKI. Cumin (Cuminum cyminum) and fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) are widely used seasonings and play a very important role in industries such as breeding, cosmetics, winemaking, drug discovery, and nano-synthetic materials. However, studies have shown that cumin and fennel from different regions not only differ greatly in the content of lipids, phenols and proteins but also the substances contained in their essential oils are also different. Therefore, realizing precise identification of cumin and fennel from different regions will greatly help in quality control, market fraud and production industrialization. In this experiment, cumin and fennel samples were collected from each region, a total of 480 NIR spectra were collected. We used deep learning and traditional machine learning algorithms combined with near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy to identify their origin. To obtain the model with the best generalization performance and classification accuracy, we used principal component analysis (PCA) to reduce spectral data dimensionality after Rubberband baseline correction, and then established classification models including quadratic discriminant analysis based on PCA (PCA-QDA) and multilayer perceptron based on PCA (PCA-MLP). We also directly input the spectral data after baseline correction into convolutional neural networks (CNN) and generative adversarial networks (GAN). The experimental results show that GAN is more accurate than the PCA-QDA, PCA-MLP and CNN models, and the classification accuracy reached 100%. In the cumin and fennel classification experiment in the same region, the four models achieve great classification results from three regions under the condition that all model parameters remain unchanged. The experimental results show that when the training data are limited and the dimension is high, the model obtained by GAN using competitive learning has more generalization ability and higher classification accuracy. Neutrophilic inflammatory diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), or psoriasis, exert a huge burden on the global health system due to the lack of safe and effective treatments. Volatile oils from terrestrial plants showed impressive therapeutic effects against disorders of the skin, digestive system, lungs, liver, metabolism, and nervous system. However, their effect on the immune system and neutrophil function is still elusive. Fennel, cumin, marjoram, lavender, caraway, and anise are the common nutraceuticals that are widely used in the Mediterranean diet. The volatile oils of these herbs were screened for various biological activities, including anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, antimicrobial, and antiviral effects. Several oils showed anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial potential. Fennel ( Foeniculum vulgare ) and cumin ( Cuminum cyminum ) fruits' volatile oils significantly suppressed the activation of human neutrophils, including respiratory burst and the degranulation induced by formyl peptide receptor agonists fMLF/CB and MMK1 in the human neutrophils (IC 50 , 3.8-17.2 µg/ml). The cytotoxic effect and free-radical scavenging effects (ABTS, DPPH) of these oils did not account for the observed effects. Both fennel and cumin volatile oils significantly shortened calcium influx recovery time and inhibited phosphorylation of mitogen-activated protein kinases (p38, JNK, and ERK) expression. The gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of these oils revealed the presence of estragole and cuminaldehyde as the major components of fennel and cumin volatile oils, respectively. Talaga cheese is a soft Egyptian cheese that has been associated with foodborne pathogens such as Listeria monocytogenes and Shigella flexneri. Essential oils (EOs) play a pivotal role in sustainably controlling foodborne diseases and as a potential preservative in soft cheeses. However, limited data is available comparing the antibacterial activity of EOs and their nano-emulsions (NEs) when inoculated into Talaga cheese. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the antibacterial activity of carvacrol, clove, and cumin EOs, in addition to their NEs, against L. monocytogenes (NCTC 13372/ATCC® 7644) and S. flexneri (ATCC®12022 TW⁎ ) inoculated into laboratory-manufactured Egyptian Talaga cheese during refrigerated storage. The NEs had a Z-average diameter of 32.98 ± 29.75 nm, 45.2 ± 34.25 nm, and 50.23 ± 15.7 nm and a PDI of 0.326, 0.245, and 0.307 for carvacrol, clove, and cumin NEs, respectively. The flow of active functional groups of EOs and NEs as clarified by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed the spherical-shaped droplet structure of the prepared NEs. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of all EOs and their NEs was 0.78% against L. monocytogenes and 1.56% against S. flexneri, while those of carvacrol EO and its NE were 0.78% against both microorganisms. By supplementation in cheese, NEs significantly reduced the counts of inoculated pathogens from 8.2 log 10 cfu/g to 1.5 log 10 cfu/g after 2 to 3 weeks compared to EOs, which reduced them after 4 to 5 weeks. The carvacrol NE showed excellent antibacterial activity with no cheese sensory impairment. It reduced L. monocytogenes by 99% (R%) after 7 days and after 3 weeks for S. flexneri at 0.78% concentration, while higher concentrations and a longer period were required for the other NEs to show an inhibitory effect. Background: Edible oils have proven health benefits in the prevention and treatment of various disorders since the establishment of human era. This study was aimed to appraise neuropharmacological studies on the commonly used edible oils including Cinnamomum verum (CV), Zingiber officinale (ZO) and Cuminum cyminum (CC)., Methods: The oils were analyzed via GC-MS for identifications of bioactive compounds. Anti-radicals capacity of the oils were evaluated via 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate (DPPH) and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) radicals scavenging assays. The samples were also tested against two important acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) which are among the important drug targets in Alzheimer's disease. Lineweaver-Burk plots were constructed for enzyme inhibition studies which correspond to velocity of enzymes (V max ) against the reciprocal of substrate concentration (K m ) in the presence of test samples and control drugs following Michaelis-Menten kinetics. Docking studies on AChE target were also carried out using Molecular Operating Environment (MOE 2016.0802) software., Results: (Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry GC-MS) analysis revealed the presence of thirty-four compounds in Cinnamon oil (Cv.Eo), fourteen in ginger oil (Zo.Eo) and fifty-six in cumin oil (Cc.Eo). In the antioxidant assays, Cv.Eo, Zo.Eo and Cc.Eo exhibited IC 50 values of 85, 121, 280 μg/ml sequentially against DPPH radicals. Whereas, in ABTS assay, Cv.Eo, Zo.Eo and Cc.Eo showed considerable anti-radicals potentials with IC 50 values of 93, 77 and 271 μg/ml respectively. Furthermore, Cv.Eo was highly active against AChE enzyme with IC 50 of 21 μg/ml. Zo.Eo and Cc.Eo exhibited considerable inhibitory activities against AChE with IC 50 values of 88 and 198 μg/ml respectively. In BChE assay, Cv.Eo, Zo.Eo and Cc.Eo exhibited IC 50 values of 106, 101 and 37 μg/ml respectively. Our results revealed that these oils possess considerable antioxidant and cholinesterase inhibitory potentials. As functional foods these oils can be effective remedy for the prevention and management of neurological disorders including AD. Synergistic effect of all the identified compounds was determined via binding energy values computed through docking simulations. Cumin ( Cuminum cyminum L.) is an important spice crop worldwide and its production is hampered by the infection of Alternaria blight. Cultivation of cumin in Bangladesh is very limited due to the lack of appropriate germplasm and adequate scientific information regarding the prevalence of Alternaria blight. Field trials were conducted with four advanced lines of cumin viz. CN026, CN028, CN031 and CN038 in five agro-ecological zones (AEZ) to know the adaptation possibility of these lines against the incidence and severity of Alternaria blight of cumin in Bangladesh. Among all lines, CN026 was found as the best in germination capacity and other yield parameters in all locations. The incidence and severity of the disease was observed as high as 98% and 88%, respectively, however, out of the five locations, the incidence and severity of the disease was the lowest in Bogura for the line CN026. In an attempt to identify the causal organism of the Alternaria blight of cumin by using molecular tools, a total of twenty three isolates were collected from the plants showing Alternaria blight symptoms from different AEZ in Bangladesh. Based on the molecular analysis, the isolates were identified as Alternaria alternata , A . burnsii , A . gaisen and A . tenuissima . A . alternata was the most prevalent species followed by A . tenuissima . The isolates of the identified species were found to have genetic, morphological and pathogenic variation. An isolate of A . alternata was observed as the most virulent among the isolates. This is the first report of A . alternata causing Alternaria blight disease of cumin in Bangladesh. Cuminum cyminum L. is a versatile spice belonging to family Apiaceae. Though the plant has pan-tropical distribution but it is indigenous to Egypt, the Mediterranean, and South Asian countries. It exhibits numerous culinary, traditional, and pharmacological attributes. Its traditional uses also validate its immense pharmacological potential. Cuminum cyminum is the hub of numerous bioactives such as alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids, and so forth. Cuminaldehyde is the major bioactive, rendered to most of its pharmacological as well as clinical significance. The present study comprised of current knowledge on its taxonomy, nutritional, traditional, phytochemistry, pharmacology (antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammation, antidiabetic, wound healing, anticancer, etc.), toxicology, and clinical attributes. Besides, the mechanism of action is also well explained. The present study provides a rationale for further bioprospection of this wonder plant. Future studies are needed to fill the research gaps, particularly on relevant phytocompound isolation, their pre-clinical and clinical characterization, evaluation, and structure-activity relationship. The present investigation was an attempt to evaluate the hypoglycemic, lipid-lowering, antioxidant and hepatoprotective effects of cumin (Cuminum cyminum family: Apiaceae) supplementation in high fat (HF) diet fed rats. Male Wistar rats were divided into four groups, such as control, control+ cumin, HF and HF+ cumin. Oral glucose tolerance test, plasma lipids, oxidative stress parameters, antioxidant enzymes activities, and liver dysfunction marker enzyme activities were evaluated. Additionally, histological staining of liver tissue was performed to evaluate the inflammatory cells infiltration, iron deposition and fibrosis. The current investigation demonstrated that 1% (w/w) supplementation of cumin powder significantly reduced HF diet-induced glucose intolerance, epididymal and mesenteric fat wet weights and lipid parameters like triglycerides, total cholesterol and low-density lipoproteins. Oxidative stress-related biomarkers including thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), nitric oxide (NO) and advanced oxidation protein product (APOP) were also reduced by cumin supplementation. Moreover, HF-diet increased the activity of hepatic biomarker enzymes such as alanine transaminase (ALT) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activities which were significantly reduced by cumin powder supplementation. On the other hand, cumin powder supplementation was able to restore the reduced glutathione level with parallel augmentation of the antioxidant enzymes activities such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase in liver of HF diet-fed rats. Additionally, histological assessments confirmed that cumin powder supplementation also normalized the fat droplet deposition and inflammatory cells infiltration in the liver of HF diet-fed rats. This study aimed to prepare and evaluate virgin olive oil (VOO) oleogels enriched with thyme and cumin spices with sunflower wax (SW) organogelator. Common physico-chemical, structural, thermal, and rheological analyses were completed. Furthermore, aromatic volatiles composition, sensory descriptive analysis, and consumer tests were provided. Results indicated that spice addition does not interfere with gel formation, stability, and gelation time. The oleogels' color values were affected by the color of the VOO and the spices. The free fatty acidity and peroxide values were within the acceptable limits for virgin olive oils. There were β' crystal polymorphs, and melting peak temperatures were around 62 °C. Rheological analyses proved that the oleogels were fairly stable under moderate frequencies, maintained their gelled state until around 52 °C, and recovered their shear induced structural loss after force cessation. There were 22 aromatic volatiles quantified in the samples, which originated from the VOO and spices used as ingredients. A trained panel defined the samples using 13 sensory descriptors. Consumer tests proved that the new oleogels were liked by consumers. Overall, this study provided information and the possibility of spice-enriched and spreadable VOO oleogels to enhance per capita consumption of olive oils with new consumption habits.

The diseases caused by phytopathogens account for huge economic losses in the agricultural sector. Paenibacillus polymyxa is one of the agriculturally important biocontrol agents and plant growth promoting bacterium. This study describes the antifungal potential of P. polymyxa HK4 against an array of fungal phytopathogens and its ability to stimulate seed germination of cumin and groundnut under in vitro conditions. The cumin and groundnut seeds bacterized with HK4 exhibited enhanced germination efficiency in comparison to controls. The use of HK4 as a soil inoculant significantly promoted the shoot length and fresh weight of groundnut plants in pot studies. The draft genome analysis of HK4 revealed the genetic attributes for motility, root colonization, antagonism, phosphate solubilization, siderophore production and production of volatile organic compounds. The bacterium HK4 harnessed several hydrolytic enzymes that may assist its competence in the rhizosphere. The PCR amplification and sequence analysis of the conserved region of the fusA gene amplicon revealed the ability of HK4 to produce fusaricidin. Furthermore, the LC-ESI-MS/MS of crude cell pellet extract of HK4 confirmed the presence of fusaricidin as a major antifungal metabolite. Breast cancer (BC) is a leading cause of cancer deaths in women in less developed countries and the second leading cause of cancer death in women in the U.S. In this study, we report the inhibition of E2-mediated mammary tumorigenesis by Cuminum cyminum (cumin) administered via the diet as cumin powder, as well as dried ethanolic extract. Groups of female ACI rats were given either an AIN-93M diet or a diet supplemented with cumin powder (5% and 7.5%, w / w ) or dried ethanolic cumin extract (1%, w / w ), and then challenged with subcutaneous E2 silastic implants (1.2 cm; 9 mg). The first appearance of a palpable mammary tumor was significantly delayed by both the cumin powder and extract. At the end of the study, the tumor incidence was 96% in the control group, whereas only 55% and 45% animals had palpable tumors in the cumin powder and extract groups, respectively. Significant reductions in tumor volume (660 ± 122 vs. 138 ± 49 and 75 ± 46 mm 3 ) and tumor multiplicity (4.21 ± 0.43 vs. 1.16 ± 0.26 and 0.9 ± 0.29 tumors/animal) were also observed by the cumin powder and cumin extract groups, respectively. The cumin powder diet intervention dose- and time-dependently offset E2-related pituitary growth, and reduced the levels of circulating prolactin and the levels of PCNA in the mammary tissues. Mechanistically, the cumin powder diet resulted in a significant reversal of E2-associated modulation in ERα, CYP1A1 and CYP1B1. Further, the cumin powder diet reversed the expression levels of miRNAs (miR-182, miR-375, miR-127 and miR-206) that were highly modulated by E2 treatment. We analyzed the composition of the extract by GC/MS and established cymene and cuminaldehyde as major components, and further detected no signs of gross or systemic toxicity. Thus, cumin bioactives can significantly delay and prevent E2-mediated mammary tumorigenesis in a safe and effective manner, and warrant continued efforts to develop these clinically translatable spice bioactives as chemopreventives and therapeutics against BC.

Cuminum cyminum is famous for its spicy fruits used for culinary and therapeutic properties worldwide. Brine shrimp test was performed for detecting cytotoxic fractions and subfractions. Ethyl acetate (EA) and hexane (HE) fractions demonstrated LC 50 of 52.40 and 60.77 µg/ml against Artemia salina while other fractions showed no toxicity (LC 50 > 500 µg/ml). Bioguided elucidation of EA and HE fractions were carried out and cytotoxicity of pure compounds were investigated against breast cancer cell lines (MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231) and normal cell line (NIH/3T3) by MTT assay. Four flavone structures as luteolin, apigenin, luteolin-7- O -glucoside and apigenin-7- O -glucoside from EA and cuminoid A from HE were purified and identified. Luteolin-7- O -glucoside demonstrated potent anticancer activities against MCF-7 cell line (IC 50 of 3.98 µg/ml) with selectivity index of 8.0. In conclusion, flavonoids especially luteolin-7- O -glucoside play a significant role in cytotoxic effect of C. cyminum fruits and can be introduced as candidate for chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic drugs.

Chemical constitutes and phytotoxic activity of Cuminum cymiunm L. is investigated in the present study. For this means seeds of C. cyminum L. was harvested from Ilkhchi of Iran. The major components of essential oil (EO) with more than 94% were 3-caren-10-al, cuminal, 2-Caren-10-al, γ-Terpinene, (-)-β-Pinene and p -Cymene. This study found that cumin EO displayed meaningful inhibitory impacts on germination indices and the growth of the seedlings of Amaranthus retroflexus , Lactuca sativa, and Acroptilon repens . The germination indices showed severely concentration-dependent responses. In the case of A. retroflexus and L. sativa germination indices were controlled in the 500 ppm and in the A. repens were inhibited in the 1500 ppm of EO concentration. Overall, this study suggests that EO derived from C. cyminum L. looks to be a promising candidate for its utilization as a natural herbicide in large scale.[Formula: see text].

Several plant-based traditional ingredients in Asia are anecdotally used for preventing and/or treating type 2 diabetes. We investigated three such widely consumed ingredients, namely corn silk (CS), cumin (CU), and tamarind (TA). The aim of the study was to determine the effects of aqueous extracts of these ingredients consumed either as a drink (D) with high-glycemic-index rice or added to the same amount of rice during cooking (R) on postprandial glycemia (PPG), insulinemia (PPI), and blood pressure (BP), over a 3 h measurement period. Eighteen healthy Chinese men (aged 37.5 ± 12.5 years, BMI 21.8 ± 1.67 kg/m 2 ) took part in a randomized crossover trial, each completing up to nine sessions. Compared to the control meal (plain rice + plain water), the addition of test extracts in either form did not modulate PPG, PPI, or BP. However, the extracts when added within rice while cooking gave rise to significantly lower PPI than when consumed as a drink ( p < 0.01). Therefore, the form of consumption of phytochemical-rich ingredients can differentially modulate glucose homeostasis. Two series of novel cuminaldehyde derivatives containing pyrazoline and isoxazoline moieties have been designed and synthesized. All of the compounds were characterized via 1 H-NMR, 13 C-NMR, and HRMS. The antifungal activities were evaluated against six plant-pathogenic fungi. 3-(2-Fluorophenyl)-5-(4-isopropylphenyl) isoxazoline ( 2d ) and 1-acetyl-3-(2-fluorophenyl)-5-(4-isopropylphenyl)-2-pyrazoline ( 3d ) displayed higher antifungal activities than commercial fungicides against Sclerotinia sclerotiorum , Physalospora piricola and Pyricularia oryzae . The title compounds ( 2d and 3d ) with strong antifungal activities are worth being further evaluated in vivo and in the field.

Background and objective The plethora of anti-diabetic agents available today has many side effects, especially on chronic usage. Hence, alternative approaches utilizing natural and synthetic agents are sought after. Cumin has been shown to be beneficial in treating diabetes. This study evaluates the anti-diabetic effect of cumin and glyburide in the streptozotocin induced diabetes model in rats, and investigates their pharmacodynamic interactions and its implication in diabetes. Methodology The phytoconstituents present in the ethanolic cumin seed extract were determined using appropriate analytical methods. After acute toxicity studies (OECD 2001), the anti-diabetic effect of the extract was evaluated in wistar rats. The rats were divided into five groups - Groups I and II served as the normal and diabetic control. Group III was the standard control (glyburide 5 mg/kg), while groups IV and V received the extract (600 mg/kg) and a combination of the extract (600 mg/kg) and glyburide (2.5 mg/kg; half dose). Biochemical parameters viz. plasma glucose and glycosylated haemoglobin, were measured periodically during the 28 day treatment. On the 28th day, oral glucose tolerance test, lipid profile, renal profile and histopathological evaluation were performed after completion of the study. To investigate the nature of herb-drug interaction, HPLC analysis for estimation of glyburide concentration in the blood was conducted. Results Acute toxicity studies showed the extract to be safe till a dose of 2 g/kg. The extract alone, and in combination with glyburide (half-dose), significantly lowered elevated glucose (by more than 45% from baseline; without producing hypoglycemia), and other lipid and renal parameters. The effects produced by 2.5 mg/kg glyburide, and 5 mg/kg glyburide (without extract) were similar. Histopathological analysis also showed that the extract was able to reverse the degeneration brought about by streptozotocin which was especially notable on the pancreatic and renal tissue. HPLC analysis revealed differing pharmacokinetics of glyburide in the groups treated with 5 mg/kg dose, and 2.5 mg/kg + 600 mg/kg extract. Conclusion The results obtained in this study suggest that Cuminum cyminum L. is a promising anti-diabetic agent, and exhibits pharmacodynamic interaction with glyburide to mitigate symptoms of diabetes mellitus.

Aflatoxins are part of fungal secondary metabolites which become serious health, environmental, and economic problems and can cause corruption of many crops and agricultural grains that used as food and feed for human and animal. Aflatoxins mainly produce by Aspergillus spp. especially Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus. The present work aimed to study the effect of nanoencapsulation of chitosan (CS) nanoparticles with two phenolic compounds 1-(2-ethyl,6-heptyl)phenol (EHP) extracted from Cuminum cyminum and 5-ethyl-2-(methoxymethyl)phenol (EMMP) extracted from black pepper on growth and aflatoxins production of A. flavus and A. parasiticus. A. flavus growth was completely inhibited by 0.6 mg/ml of EHP and EMMP as well as A. parasiticus which showed the same minimal inhibition concentration with the first compound and 0.8 mg/ml with the second one. CS nanoparticles inhibited the growth of the tested organisms more than CS especially with A. parasiticus and this potency became much better when nanoencapsulated with the two extracted phenolic compounds. In inhibition of aflatoxins production, EHP reduced the production of aflatoxin B1 and B2 of A. flavus by 68.6% and 69.7%, respectively. In the same manner EMMP reduce the production of the two toxins by 87.3% and 82.6%, respectively. The reduction effect of CS nanoparticles is much more than that of CS as it record in most cases about twofold increase. Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate the anticandidal effects of essential oils derived from fennel ( Foeniculum vulgare ) and cumin ( Cuminum cyminum ) on Candida strains isolated from edentulous patients., Materials and Methods: Candida samples were isolated from 30 edentulous patients and the strains were identified using the CHROMagar method. Using the macro-broth dilution method and punched-hole tests, the effectiveness of fennel and cumin essential oils (prepared through distillation by water) was clarified. Nystatin was used as a positive control., Results: Nystatin (44 μg/mL) had the strongest antifungal effect, followed by cumin [minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) = 662 μg/mL; minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) = 630 μg/mL] and fennel (MIC = 1,074 μg/mL; MFC = 1,227 μg/mL). The average diameter of the fungal growth inhibition zone was 23 mm for Nystatin, 14 mm for cumin essential oil, and 5 mm for fennel essential oil., Conclusion: The anti- Candida effects of fennel and cumin show promise as alternatives to conventional drugs for the treatment of Candida infections.

Background Cuminum cyminum L., commonly known as cumin, has been traditionally used in Thai traditional medicine and traditional food flavoring. The present study investigated the chemical composition, antimicrobial activity against all tested major food-borne pathogenic bacteria, and bioactive components of essential oil extracted from C. cyminum L. collected in Thailand. Methods The main components of the essential oil were investigated by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) technique. Antibacterial activities against Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Salmonella Typhi were investigated by disk diffusion and microdilution method. The presence of the biologically active antibacterial components was also confirmed by the thin-layer chromatography (TLC)-bioautography. Results The main components of the essential oil investigated by GC-MS were cuminaldehyde (27.10%), beta-pinene (25.04%) and gamma-terpinene (15.68%). The essential oil exhibited antibacterial activity against B. cereus, S. aureus, E. coli and S. Typhi. The essential oil showed the strongest antimicrobial activity against B. cereus with a comparable inhibition zone to tetracycline. TLC confirmed the presence of biologically active antibacterial component in the essential oil against all tested food-borne bacteria. It is further demonstrated that cuminaldehyde was the most active compound in TLC-bioautography which inhibited all of tested bacteria. Conclusions Essential oil extracted from C. cyminum L. exhibited antibacterial activity against all tested major food-borne pathogenic bacteria. Cuminaldehyde is a major bioactive component. Our results suggest that the essential oil extracted from C. cyminum L. could be applied as an alternative natural preservative to control food-borne disease and have the potential for further development of new antibacterial agents.

Biotic and abiotic stresses cause special defense reactions in plant organs, which after a series of reactions, these stresses produce secondary metabolites. The effect of ultraviolet radiation on the expression of key genes involved in the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites (Phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL), Hydroxymethylglutaryl-CoA reductase (HMG-CoA reductase), GPP synthases, Deoxyribonino heptulosinate 7-phosphate synthase (DAHP), and Deoxy Xylose Phosphate Synthase (DXS)), and the association of these genes with different amounts of secondary metabolites (phenol, terpene, flavonoids, anthocyanins, alkaloids, lycopene, and beta-carotene) was investigated in this study. The results of this study showed that the application of UV-B stress significantly increased the expression of GPPs, HMG-CoA reductase, DXS, DAHPs, and PAL genes compared to the control plants. The expression of two key genes involved in the biosynthesis of phenylpropanoids, including DAHPs and PAL, increased with UV-B stress, and the highest expression was related to the PAL gene. The results revealed that UV-B stress caused a significant increase in total levels of terpenoids, phenols, flavonoids, anthocyanins, alkaloids, beta-carotene, and lycopene. The highest relative expression of all genes was obtained in treatment A (UV-B radiation for 1 h), while in treatment B (UV-B radiation for 2 h), no significant changes were observed in the expression of the genes.

We performed a meta-analysis to evaluate the efficacy of cumin supplementation on plasma lipid concentration in adult population. The search included PubMed, Scopus, ISI Web of Science, Google Scholar, and the Cochrane library (up to January 2018) to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) investigating the effects of cumin supplementation on serum lipid parameters. Mean difference (MD) was pooled using a random-effects model. Meta-analysis of data from six eligible RCTs with 376 participants showed a significant reduction in plasma concentration of total cholesterol (MD [95% CI] -10.90 [-21.39, -0.42] mg/dl, p = 0.042) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (MD [95% CI] -6.94 [-11.53, -2.35] mg/dl, p = 0.003) after supplementation with cumin compared with control treatment, and plasma concentration of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (MD [95% CI] 3.35 [1.58, 5.12] mg/dl, p˂0.001) were found to be increased. Although our analysis indicated that cumin supplementation cannot change triglyceride (TG) concentration (MD [95% CI] -20.48 [-41.23, -0.26] mg/dl, p = 0.053), but after stratified the RCTs based on the primary level of TG (hypertriglyceridemia versus nonhypertriglyceridemia subjects), there was a significant decrease in nonhypertriglyceridemia subset. Objective: This study was carried out to determine the effects of cumin essential oil on the silage fermentation, aerobic stability and in vitro digestibility of alfalfa silages., Methods: Alfalfa was harvested at early bloom (5th cutting) stage in October and wilted for about 3 hours. The research was carried out at three groups which were the control group where no additive control was done (CON), cumin essential oil (CMN3) with 300 mg/kg and CMN5 with 500 mg/kg cumin essential oil addition. Alfalfa was ensiled in plastic bags. The packages were stored at 8°C±2°C under laboratory conditions. All groups were sampled for physical, chemical and microbiological analysis 120th day after ensiling. At the end of the ensiling period, all silages were subjected to an aerobic stability test for 7 days. In addition, enzimatic solubility of organic matter (ESOM), metabolizable energy (ME), and relative feed value (RFV) of these silages were determined., Results: pH level decreased in the cumin groups compared to CON (p&lt;0.05), thus inhibiting proteolytic enzymes from breaking down proteins into ammonia. In addition, it increased ESOM amount, and concordantly provided an increase of ME contents. Similarly, dry matter intake and RFV ratio increased. After opening the silage, it kept its aerobic stability for three days., Conclusion: Cumin essential oil improved fermentation, and affected chemical and microbiological characteristics of silages. Especially the addition of 300 mg/kg cumin provided cell wall fractionation through stimulating the activities of enzymes responsible. It also increased the number and activity of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) through providing a development of LAB.

Background: Natural compounds are more frequently used against Anisakis, responsible for the important fish-borne disease anisakidosis. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of enriched Tunisian olive oil with different spices (cumin, turmeric, clove, thyme, and lemon) against Anisakis larvae type 1., Results: In vitro experiment: larvae were submerged separately in the aforementioned oils and then examined to check viability. For each oil, LT50 and LT100 were calculated. Turmeric and cumin oils are the most effective against the parasites; followed by lemon, thyme and clove oils. For the in vivo experiment, turmeric and cumin oils were tested in anchovy fillets previously artificially parasitized with L3 larvae. Cumin was the most effective against parasites (dead after 5 days) compared with turmeric (8 days). For the two oils, the resulting odor was pleasant, as was the taste, while changes in color were much more evident in turmeric fillets., Conclusion: All the flavored oils demonstrated a good nematodical action against Anisakis. Cumin oil was the most effective against encysted larvae. Turmeric oil showed the best activity in the in vitro experiment. Following a request from the European Commission, the EFSA Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed (FEEDAP) was asked to deliver a scientific opinion on the safety and efficacy of cumin tincture ( Cuminum cyminum L.) when used as a sensory feed additive for all animal species. The product is a water ethanol ■■■■■ solution, which contains 0.002-0.003% of 4-isopropylbenzaldehyde (cuminaldehyde). The FEEDAP Panel concludes that the additive cumin tincture is safe at the maximum proposed use level (30 μL/kg complete feed or water for drinking) for all animal species. No safety concern would arise for the consumer from the use of cumin tincture up to the highest safe level in feeds. No specific data were provided by the applicant regarding the safety of the additive for users. In the absence of data, no conclusions can be drawn on the additive's potential to be a dermal/eye irritant or a skin sensitiser. The use of cumin tincture at the maximum proposed dose is not considered to be a risk for the environment. Since the major components of the additive are recognised to provide flavour in food and its function in feed would be essentially the same, no demonstration of efficacy is considered necessary., (© 2018 European Food Safety Authority. Introduction: Cumin (Cuminum cyminum), a popular spice has been widely used in traditional medicine to cure various ailments. Despite the existence of scientific literature about its pharmacological properties, no successful proteome profiling has yet been attempted., Objective: To optimise extraction of cumin proteins and analyse its profile by shotgun proteomics, using one-dimensional electrophoresis coupled with nano-ESI-LC-MS/MS., Methodology: As a first step, we have compared three extraction protocols for total proteins extraction from cumin. Extracted proteins were separated on one-dimensional gel and analysed by state-of-the-art linear ion trap (LTQ)-Orbitrap Velose and Q Exactive HF mass spectrometer., Results: Evaluation of extraction method revealed significant differences in protein yield and proteome composition between the three extracts. LC-MS/MS allowed identification of several proteins with functional significance in various biological processes., Conclusion: This study provides identification of a large number of proteins and offers a molecular basis for future research on potential pharmacologically active cumin proteins. Malnutrition continues to be a key health problem in developing regions. The valorization of food waste appears as an ideal way to prevent malnutrition and improve people's access to food. Cumin ( Cuminum cyminum L.) and caraway ( Carum carvi L.) oilseeds are commonly used for cuisine and medicinal purposes. However, remaining cakes after oil extraction are usually underutilized. In order to assess the usefulness of these by-products in food applications, this study investigated the effect of their addition to protein bread formulations. Different levels (2, 4 and 6%) of whole seeds and cakes flour were used in the study. Fortified protein bread samples were compared to control protein bread and evaluated for their sensory, color, moisture, hardness properties, nutritional values as well as their biological activity. Results indicated that bread fortification shows a significant effect on bread properties depending on fortification level. A higher acceptability was observed specially for bread fortified with by-products flour. Increased tendencies of color darkness, moisture content, bread hardness, nutritional values as well as total phenolic content and radical scavenging activity compared to control bread were observed as the percentage of fortification increased in both cases. The overall results showed that the addition of cumin and caraway seeds and by-product flour can improve the antioxidant potential and overall quality of protein bread., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

This study was established a model of obesity to estimate the impact of fennel and cumin as anti-obesity extracts on body weight, body mass index (BMI), food consumption, leptin concentration, sperm quality and testis architecture to determine the reversibility of reproductive function of obese animals. Male rats were randomly assigned to either a normal or high-fat diet for 8 weeks. Then, we divided 56 adult rats into seven groups: control (CO); obesity (OB); fennel 100 and 200 mg/kg; cumin 50 and 100 mg/kg; and fennel 100 mg/kg plus cumin 50 mg/kg. From weeks 9-16, the animals treated extracts by gavages daily. We analysed leptin concentration, sperm quality and apoptosis of testis along with evaluating changes in body weight. Body weight of animals increased 25% at week 8. However, body weight, BMI, leptin concentration and apoptosis indices of OB rats increased at the end of study. However, the relative sperm parameters decreased. Nevertheless, fennel and cumin treatment improved sperm quality, and spermatogenic cells apoptosis following weight loss. Concomitant with weight loss, leptin concentration and food consumption decreased. Cumin (Cuminum cyminum) is an annual plant from Apiaceae family that is cultivated in Iran as landraces. The most important chemical composition of the cumin essential oil was cuminaldehyde. In this research, the effect of different landraces and growth regulators was evaluated on callus induction, and best callus was used for amount of cuminaldehyde content. Node, root, leaf and hypocotyl explant from seedlings of Birjand and Qaen landraces were cultured on MS and MS5 medium supplemented with different concentrations of 2, 4-D and Kin. This experiment has been carried out in a completely randomised design with 3 replications. Percentage of callogenesis, callus volume, fresh and dry weight were measured. The best treatment for callus induction was 2.5 mg/L 2, 4-D and 0.5 mg/L Kin in MS5 medium. The best callus result was evaluated for cuminaldehyde content. An amount of 5.7% cuminaldehyde was measured using hydrodistillation method.

Staphylococcus aureus is a serious causative agent of infectious disease. Multidrug-resistant strains like methicillin-resistant S. aureus compromise treatment efficacy, causing significant morbidity and mortality. Active efflux represents a major antimicrobial resistance mechanism. The proton-driven multidrug efflux pump, LmrS, actively exports structurally distinct antimicrobials. To circumvent resistance and restore clinical efficacy of antibiotics, efflux pump inhibitors are necessary, and natural edible spices like cumin are potential candidates. The mode of cumin antibacterial action and underlying mechanisms behind drug resistance inhibition, however, are unclear. We tested the hypothesis that cumin inhibits LmrS drug transport. We found that cumin inhibited bacterial growth and LmrS ethidium transport in a dosage-dependent manner. We demonstrate that cumin is antibacterial toward a multidrug-resistant host and that resistance modulation involves multidrug efflux inhibition.

An environment friendly technique is desirable for enhancing of crop production. In this study, seeds of cumin (Cuminum cyminum L.) Yazd accession were treated with 0, 150 mT, 250 mT, 500 mT and 1 T magnetic field strengths for min and germination parameters were determined. All of the treatments improved germination parameters and seedling growth as compared with the control. However, 500 and 150 mT were the most effective treatments and thus selected for field studies. Seeds were exposed to 150 mT and 500 mT static magnetic field of strengths for 12 min, planted in the field during 2010-2012 in Isfahan, Iran. Static magnetic field treatment shortened the days to emergence, flowering and maturity, increased chlorophyll and reduced proline contents. Highest biological, seed and essential oil yield, oil content, and oil yield were recorded under 500 mT followed by 150 mT and control, respectively. The results suggested that the pretreatment of cumin seeds with static magnetic field can improve germination, growth and oil and essential contents of the cumin seed under the field.

Diabetes is one of the most common metabolic diseases in the world. Vitamin E reduces protein glycation and improves insulin sensitivity, while cumin is effective in remission of diabetes. Therefore this study was designed to evaluate the effects of vitamin E and cumin essential oil, on the blood level of leptin,glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1C) and also on lipid profile in diabetic patients.In this double blind clinical trial, 95 diabetic patients were selected and randomly dividedinto three groups.The first group received cumin essential oil in capsule form. The second group received Vitamin E, and the third group was used ascontrol receiving oral gelatin capsules as placebo for three months period.Blood glucose, lipid profile, apolipoprotein A1 (ApoA1), apolipoprotein B (ApoB), leptin, HbA1c, oxidized LDL (oxLDL), and paraoxonase1 activity were measured. The results showed reduction in oxLDL and significant increase in paraoxonase 1 in Vitamin E group by the end of the third month period (P<0.05). Cumin group showed decrease in blood glucose, HbA1C, triglyceride, leptin and ox-LDL. ApoA1 and paraoxonase1 were also increased by cumin treatment (P<0.05).Diabetic complications may have been reduced by intake of Vitamin E and cumin essential oil.
