Objective: To report 5-year efficacy and safety of upadacitinib (UPA) in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) from the phase III long-term extension (LTE) of SELECT-NEXT., Methods: Patients on stable conventional synthetic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs were randomized to UPA 15 mg once daily (QD), UPA 30 mg QD, or placebo for 12 weeks. Following this, placebo-randomized patients were switched to UPA 15 mg QD or UPA 30 mg QD in the LTE; UPA-randomized patients continued their original dose. Blinding remained until dose switching from UPA 30 mg QD to UPA 15 mg QD because of approval of UPA 15 mg QD; the earliest switch occurred at week 168. Efficacy (as observed) and treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs) are reported through 5 years., Results: Overall, 611 (92%) randomized patients entered the LTE; 271 (44%) discontinued the study drug by 5 years, primarily because of adverse events (16%). Clinical outcomes improved or were maintained at 5 years; 51% and 43% of patients achieved Clinical Disease Activity Index remission and 75% and 66% achieved Disease Activity Score in 28 joints based on C-reactive protein < 2.6 among those initially randomized to UPA 15 mg QD and UPA 30 mg QD, respectively. Proportions of patients achieving ≥ 20%/50%/70% improvement in American College of Rheumatology criteria responses increased from week 60 through 5 years. Results were similar regardless of initial randomization to UPA or placebo. TEAEs, including TEAEs of special interest, were consistent with earlier analyses and other SELECT studies. Malignancies (excluding nonmelanoma skin cancer), major adverse cardiovascular events, and venous thromboembolic events were reported infrequently. No new safety signals were observed., Conclusion: The 5-year benefit-risk profile for UPA in RA remains favorable. Objective: Although exercise therapy is safe, effective, and recommended as a nonpharmacological treatment for axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA), there is a lack of guidelines regarding type and dosage. Insufficient knowledge about physical and physiological variables makes designing effective exercise programs challenging. Therefore, the goal of this study was to simultaneously assess trunk strength, spinal mobility, and the cardiorespiratory fitness of patients with axSpA., Methods: In a cross-sectional study, 58 patients with axSpA (mean age 40.8 yrs, 50% male, mean symptom duration 10.3 yrs) performed maximal cervical and trunk mobility and isometric strength tests in all planes (using David Back Concept devices) and a maximal cardiopulmonary bicycle exercise test (n = 25). Mobility and strength data were compared to healthy reference data. Cut-off values for clinical cardiopulmonary exercise testing interpretation were used to judge normality. Patients were compared based on radiographic involvement and symptom duration., Results: Both strength ( P ≤ 0.02) and mobility ( P ≤ 0.001) were significantly lower for the patients with axSpA compared to the reference. Strength deficits were comparable between the radiographic and nonradiographic groups ( P > 0.05, except trunk extension [ P = 0.03]), whereas mobility showed higher deficits in the radiographic group (cervical extension [ P = 0.02] and rotation [ P = 0.01], and trunk extension [ P = 0.03] and rotation [ P = 0.03]), regardless of symptom duration. Similarly, symptom duration positively affected oxygen pulse ( P = 0.03), relative anaerobic threshold ( P = 0.02), and aerobic capacity ( P = 0.02)., Conclusion: In patients with axSpA, strength is more affected than mobility when compared to healthy controls. Likewise, mainly the metabolic component of aerobic capacity is impaired, affecting cardiopulmonary fitness. Antler is one of the primary animal raw materials exploited for technical purposes by the hunter-gatherer groups of the Eurasian Upper Palaeolithic (UP) all over the ecological range of deers, and beyond. It was exhaustively employed to produce one of the most critical tools for the survival of the UP societies: hunting weapons. However, antler implements can be made from diverse deer taxa, with different ecological requirements and ethological behaviours. Identifying the antler's origin at a taxonomic level is thus essential in improving our knowledge of humans' functional, practical and symbolic choices, as well as the human-animal interface during Prehistoric times. Nevertheless, palaeogenetics analyses have focused mainly on bone and teeth, with genetic studies of antler generally focused on modern deer conservation. Here we present the results of the first whole mitochondrial genome ancient DNA (aDNA) analysis by means of in-solution hybridisation capture of antlers from pre-Holocene archaeological contexts. We analysed a set of 50 Palaeolithic and Neolithic (c. 34-8ka) antler and osseous objects from South-Western Europe, Central Europe, South-Western Asia and the Caucasus. We successfully obtained aDNA, allowing us to identify the exploited taxa and demonstrate the archaeological relevance of those finds. Burial rites of archaeological populations are frequently interpreted based on cremated remains of the human body and the urn they were deposited in. In comparison to inhumations, information about the deceased is much more limited and dependent on fragmentation, selection of body regions, taphonomic processes, and excavation techniques. So far, little attention has been paid to the context in which urns are buried. In this study, we combined archaeological techniques with anthropology, computed tomography, archaeobotany, zooarchaeology, geochemistry and isotopic approaches and conducted a detailed analysis on a case study of two Late Bronze Age urns from St. Pölten, Austria (c. 1430 and 1260 cal. BCE). The urns were recovered en-bloc and CT-scanned before the micro-excavation. Osteological and strontium isotope analysis revealed that the cremated remains comprised a young adult female and a child that died at the age of 10-12 years. Both individuals had been subject to physiological stress and were likely local. Animal bones burnt at different temperatures suggested different depositional pathways into the urn and pit as part of the pyre, food offerings, and unintentional settlement debris. Eight wild plant and five crop plant species appeared as part of the local landscape, as food offerings and fire accelerants. Sediment chemistry suggests that pyre remains were deposited around the urns during burial. Objective: RE-EMBARK investigated etanercept (ETN) withdrawal and retreatment in patients with nonradiographic axial spondyloarthritis (nr-axSpA) achieving inactive disease., Methods: Patients received ETN and a background nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug for 24 weeks in period 1 (P1); those achieving inactive disease (Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Score [ASDAS] with C-reactive protein [CRP] < 1.3) discontinued ETN for 40 weeks or less (period 2 [P2]). Patients who flared (ASDAS with erythrocyte sedimentation rate [ESR] ≥ 2.1) were retreated for 12 weeks in period 3 (P3). The primary endpoint was the proportion of patients with inactive disease who flared within 40 weeks of ETN withdrawal. Baseline characteristics were analyzed post hoc as predictors of maintenance and regaining of inactive disease, respectively, using univariate logistic and stepwise multivariable logistic regression models., Results: The proportion of patients experiencing flare following ETN withdrawal (P2) increased from 22.3% (25/112) after 4 weeks to 67% (77/115) after 40 weeks; 74.8% (86/115) experienced flare at any time during P2. Median time to flare was 16.1 weeks. Most patients (54/87, 62.1%) who were retreated with ETN in P3 reachieved inactive disease. Absence of both sacroiliitis detected on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and high-sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP) > 3 mg/L at baseline predicted inactive disease maintenance in P2 following ETN withdrawal in multivariable analysis; male sex and age younger than 40 years predicted regaining of inactive disease in P3 after flare/retreatment. There were no unexpected safety signals., Conclusion: Approximately 25% of patients maintained inactive disease for 40 weeks after discontinuing ETN. Absence of both MRI sacroiliitis and high hs-CRP at baseline predicted response maintenance after ETN withdrawal. Evidence of mobiliary art and body augmentation are associated with the cultural innovations introduced by Homo sapiens at the beginning of the Upper Paleolithic. Here, we report the discovery of the oldest known human-modified punctate ornament, a decorated ivory pendant from the Paleolithic layers at Stajnia Cave in Poland. We describe the features of this unique piece, as well as the stratigraphic context and the details of its chronometric dating. The Stajnia Cave plate is a personal 'jewellery' object that was created 41,500 calendar years ago (directly radiocarbon dated). It is the oldest known of its kind in Eurasia and it establishes a new starting date for a tradition directly connected to the spread of modern Homo sapiens in Europe., (© 2021. The Author(s).)

Objective: To assess the efficacy of secukinumab on axial and peripheral enthesitis in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) using pooled data from randomized controlled phase III studies., Methods: In this posthoc analysis, data were pooled from patients originally randomized to secukinumab 150 mg, 300 mg, or placebo (PBO) from phase III MEASURE 1-4 studies (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT01358175, NCT01649375, NCT02008916, and NCT02159053). Maastricht AS Enthesitis Score (MASES) was used for assessments of enthesitis through Week 52. Efficacy outcomes were mean change in MASES score and complete resolution (MASES = 0) of enthesitis in patients with baseline MASES > 0., Results: A total of 693 (71.5%) patients had enthesitis at baseline in secukinumab 300 mg, 150 mg, and PBO groups (58 [76.3%], 355 [70.4%], and 280 [72%], respectively) out of 969 patients pooled in this analysis. At Week 16, mean changes from baseline for overall MASES and enthesitis at axial MASES sites, respectively, were as follows: -2.9 ( P < 0.01) and -2.9 ( P < 0.01) for secukinumab 300 mg; -2.4 ( P < 0.015) and -2.3 ( P < 0.05) for secukinumab 150 mg; and -1.9 and -1.8 for PBO, with improvements seen through Week 52. More than one-third of secukinumab-treated patients (300 mg: 36.2%; 150 mg: 40.8%) achieved complete resolution of enthesitis at Week 16., Conclusion: Secukinumab improved enthesitis at overall MASES and axial sites in patients with AS., (© 2021 The Journal of Rheumatology.)

Objective: This study evaluated the effect of ixekizumab (IXE) on self-reported functioning and health in patients with radiographic axial spondyloarthritis (r-axSpA) who were either biological disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (bDMARD)-naïve or failed at least 1 tumor necrosis factor inhibitor (TNFi)., Methods: In 2 multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, and active-controlled (bDMARD-naïve only) trials, patients with r-axSpA were randomly assigned to receive 80 mg of IXE [every 2 weeks (Q2W) or every 4 weeks (Q4W)], placebo (PBO), or adalimumab (ADA; bDMARD-naïve only). After 16 weeks, patients who received PBO or ADA were rerandomized to receive IXE (Q2W or Q4W) up to Week 52. Functioning and health were measured by the generic 36-item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) and the disease-specific Assessment of Spondyloarthritis international Society Health Index (ASAS HI). Societal health utility was assessed by the 5-level EuroQol-5 Dimension (EQ-5D-5L)., Results: At Week 16, both doses of IXE in bDMARD-naïve and TNFi-experienced patients resulted in larger improvement in SF-36, ASAS HI, and EQ-5D-5L versus placebo. For SF-36, the largest improvements were seen for the domains of bodily pain, physical function, and role physical. A larger proportion of patients reaching improvement in ASAS HI ≥ 3 as well as an achievement of ASAS HI good health status was reported in patients treated with IXE. Improvements were maintained through Week 52., Conclusion: IXE significantly improved functioning and health as assessed by both generic and disease-specific measures, as well as societal health utility values in patients with r-axSpA, as measured by SF-36, ASAS HI, and EQ-5D-5L at Week 16, and improvements were sustained through 52 weeks., (Copyright © 2021 by the Journal of Rheumatology.)

The Micoquian is the broadest and longest enduring cultural facies of the Late Middle Palaeolithic that spread across the periglacial and boreal environments of Europe between Eastern France, Poland, and Northern Caucasus. Here, we present new data from the archaeological record of Stajnia Cave (Poland) and the paleogenetic analysis of a Neanderthal molar S5000, found in a Micoquian context. Our results demonstrate that the mtDNA genome of Stajnia S5000 dates to MIS 5a making the tooth the oldest Neanderthal specimen from Central-Eastern Europe. Furthermore, S5000 mtDNA has the fewest number of differences to mtDNA of Mezmaiskaya 1 Neanderthal from Northern Caucasus, and is more distant from almost contemporaneous Neanderthals of Scladina and Hohlenstein-Stadel. This observation and the technological affinity between Poland and the Northern Caucasus could be the result of increased mobility of Neanderthals that changed their subsistence strategy for coping with the new low biomass environments and the increased foraging radius of gregarious animals. The Prut and Dniester rivers were probably used as the main corridors of dispersal. The persistence of the Micoquian techno-complex in South-Eastern Europe infers that this axis of mobility was also used at the beginning of MIS 3 when a Neanderthal population turnover occurred in the Northern Caucasus.

Objective: Increased risk of comorbidities has been reported in spondyloarthritis (SpA). The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence and risk of developing comorbidities in patients with SpA in 3 Latin American (LA) countries, and to compare that prevalence with the general population., Methods: Data were analyzed from 390 patients with SpA enrolled in the Assessment of SpondyloArthritis international Society of Comorbidities in SpA study from Argentina, Colombia, and Mexico. Age- and sex-standardized prevalence (95% CI) was estimated for arterial hypertension (AHT), tuberculosis (TB), and malignancies. Age- and sex-specific data from the general population were obtained from the Cardiovascular Risk Factor Multiple Evaluation in Latin America (CARMELA) study for AHT, the Global TB report, and the GLOBOCAN project for malignancies. Data analyzed for AHT were confined to Colombia and Mexico. The prevalence in patients with SpA was compared with the prevalence in the general population per age- and sex-specific stratum, resulting in standardized risk ratios (SRR)., Results: In total, 64% of the patients with SpA were male, with a mean age of 45 years (SD 14.7). The most common comorbidities in the 3 LA countries were AHT (25.3%, 95% CI 21.2-30.0), hypercholesterolemia (21.5%, 95% CI 17.6-26.0), and osteoporosis (9.4%, 95% CI 6.8-12.9). AHT prevalence in Colombia and Mexico was 21.4% (95% CI 15.4-28.9) and was higher than the general population (12.5%, 95% CI 11.4-13.7), resulting in an SRR of 1.5. TB prevalence in the 3 LA countries was 3.3% (95% CI 1.8-5.7), which was significantly higher than in the general population (0.32%), leading to an SRR of 10.3. The prevalence of malignancies was not increased., Conclusion: Patients with SpA in LA are at increased risk of AHT and TB in comparison to the general population. While this sample of patients may not be entirely representative of the patient population in each country, a systematic evaluation of these comorbidities in all patients with SpA still may help to monitor these conditions better.

Present-day hunter-gatherers (HGs) live in multilevel social groups essential to sustain a population structure characterized by limited levels of within-band relatedness and inbreeding. When these wider social networks evolved among HGs is unknown. To investigate whether the contemporary HG strategy was already present in the Upper Paleolithic, we used complete genome sequences from Sunghir, a site dated to ~34,000 years before the present, containing multiple anatomically modern human individuals. We show that individuals at Sunghir derive from a population of small effective size, with limited kinship and levels of inbreeding similar to HG populations. Introduction: Spasticity is a medical problem with a high incidence that significantly impact on the quality of life of patients and their families., Aim: To analyze and to answer different questions about the use of botulinum toxin type A (BTA) in our clinical practice., Development: A group of experts in neurology develop a list of topics related with the use of BTA. Two big groups were considered: spasticity in adults and in children with cerebral palsy. A literature search at PubMed for English, French, and Spanish language articles published up to June 2016 was performed. The manuscript was structured as a questionnaire that includes those questions that, according to the panel opinion, could generate more controversy or doubt. The initial draft was reviewed by the expert panel members to allow for modifications, and after subsequent revisions for achieving the highest degree of consensus, the final text was then validated. Different questions about diverse aspects of spasticity in adults, such as methods for evaluating spasticity, infiltration techniques, doses, number of infiltration points, etc. Regarding spasticity in children with cerebral palsy, the document included questions about minimum age of infiltration, methods of analgesia, etc., Conclusions: This review is a tool for continuous training for neurologist and rehabilitation specialist and residents of both specialties, about different specific areas of the management of BTA.

Objective: To evaluate the validity of enthesitis indices in patients with peripheral spondyloarthritis (pSpA)., Methods: The ABILITY-2 study evaluated the efficacy of adalimumab (ADA) versus placebo (PBO) in patients with active pSpA over 12 weeks. Patients received open-label ADA for an additional 144 weeks. Twenty-nine enthesitis sites used in 3 enthesitis scoring systems [Leeds Enthesitis Index (LEI), Spondyloarthritis Research Consortium of Canada (SPARCC) Enthesitis Index, Maastricht Ankylosing Spondylitis Enthesitis Score (MASES)] were assessed; discriminatory capacity and treatment response at Week 12 were calculated by standardized mean difference (SMD) and Guyatt's effect size (ES). Sites showing resolution or new-onset enthesitis from baseline to Week 12 were analyzed., Results: Overall, 165 patients (ADA, n = 84; PBO, n = 81) were randomized; 143 had ≥ 1 enthesitis site at baseline. The LEI (SMD -0.73, ES -1.07) and SPARCC (SMD -0.56, ES -0.99) enthesitis indices showed higher discriminatory ability and treatment response than MASES (SMD -0.32, ES -0.81). At Week 12, among sites that were positive at baseline, significantly more (p < 0.05) showed resolution among patients treated with ADA versus PBO in the Achilles tendon (60.4% and 36.5%, respectively), medial epicondyle (73.2%, 48.7%), lateral epicondyle (80.6%, 52.8%), and iliac crest (73.5%, 47.2%). Among negative sites at baseline, significantly less (p < 0.05) new-onset enthesitis was observed with ADA versus PBO for Achilles tendon (3.6% and 10.9%, respectively), greater trochanter (3.4%, 14.4%), lateral epicondyle humerus (4.7%, 15.1%), medial femoral condyle (1.6%, 9.2%), and quadriceps insertion superior patella (1.5%, 7.0%)., Conclusion: The LEI and SPARCC enthesitis indices showed better discriminatory capacity and treatment response in patients with pSpA versus MASES, likely because these indices contain more peripheral sites., Trial Registration Number: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT01064856.

Objective: Apremilast, an oral phosphodiesterase 4 inhibitor, downregulates intracellular inflammatory mediator synthesis by elevating cyclic adenosine monophosphate levels. The PALACE 2 trial evaluated apremilast efficacy and safety in patients with active psoriatic arthritis (PsA) despite prior conventional disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs and/or biologic therapy., Methods: Eligible patients were randomized (1:1:1) to placebo, apremilast 20 mg BID, or apremilast 30 mg BID. At Week 16, patients with swollen and tender joint count improvement < 20% entered early escape, with placebo patients rerandomized (1:1) to apremilast 20 mg BID or 30 mg BID while apremilast patients continued on their initial apremilast dose. At Week 24, patients remaining on placebo were rerandomized to apremilast 20 mg BID or 30 mg BID. The primary endpoint was the proportion of patients achieving > 20% improvement in American College of Rheumatology response criteria (ACR20) at Week 16., Results: In the intent-to-treat population (N = 484), ACR20 at Week 16 was achieved by more patients receiving apremilast 20 mg BID [37.4% (p = 0.0002)] and 30 mg BID [32.1% (p = 0.0060)] versus placebo (18.9%). Clinically meaningful improvements in signs and symptoms of PsA, physical function, and psoriasis were observed with apremilast through Week 52. The most common adverse events were diarrhea, nausea, headache, and upper respiratory tract infection. Diarrhea and nausea generally occurred early and usually resolved spontaneously with continued treatment. Laboratory abnormalities were infrequent and transient., Conclusion: Apremilast demonstrated clinical improvements in PsA for up to 52 weeks, including signs and symptoms, physical function, and psoriasis. Modern human dispersal into Europe is thought to have occurred with the start of the Upper Paleolithic around 50,000-40,000 y ago. The Levantine corridor hypothesis suggests that modern humans from Africa spread into Europe via the Levant. Ksâr 'Akil (Lebanon), with its deeply stratified Initial (IUP) and Early (EUP) Upper Paleolithic sequence containing modern human remains, has played an important part in the debate. The latest chronology for the site, based on AMS radiocarbon dates of shell ornaments, suggests that the appearance of the Levantine IUP is later than the start of the first Upper Paleolithic in Europe, thus questioning the Levantine corridor hypothesis. Here we report a series of AMS radiocarbon dates on the marine gastropod Phorcus turbinatus associated with modern human remains and IUP and EUP stone tools from Ksâr 'Akil. Our results, supported by an evaluation of individual sample integrity, place the EUP layer containing the skeleton known as "Egbert" between 43,200 and 42,900 cal B.P. and the IUP-associated modern human maxilla known as "Ethelruda" before ∼ 45,900 cal B.P. This chronology is in line with those of other Levantine IUP and EUP sites and demonstrates that the presence of modern humans associated with Upper Paleolithic toolkits in the Levant predates all modern human fossils from Europe. The age of the IUP-associated Ethelruda fossil is significant for the spread of modern humans carrying the IUP into Europe and suggests a rapid initial colonization of Europe by our species.

Objective: Adalimumab (ADA) was evaluated for its efficacy in patients with moderate to severely active psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and for the presence of correlations in disease change variables., Methods: Patients with inadequate response to standard PsA therapy were given 40 mg of ADA every other week for up to 12 weeks or 20 weeks. Outcome variables encompassed tender joint count (TJC), swollen joint count (SJC), physician's global assessment (PGA) of psoriasis, Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ), patient's global assessment (PtGA) of disease activity and pain, C-reactive protein, as well as composite measures of disease activity. Patients with inactive skin disease symptoms at baseline were excluded from the remission analyses., Results: Of 268 patients with active baseline joint and skin disease and data available at Week 12 following open-label ADA therapy, 73 achieved joint remission (27.2%, TJC ≤ 1 + SJC ≤ 1) and 144 achieved skin remission criteria (53.7%, PGA = clear/almost clear). Simultaneous joint and skin remission criteria were achieved in 16.0% and 24.8% of patients at weeks 12 and 20, respectively. In patients who did not achieve skin and/or joint remission, 12-week ADA treatment improved mean clinical and functional scores. Joint remission was more frequently associated with achieving clinically relevant outcomes including HAQ, PtGA disease activity, and PtGA pain compared to skin remission. No correlation between improvement in skin and joint disease was observed., Conclusion: ADA was effective in achieving strict criteria for remission in joint or skin disease in many patients with active PsA within 12 weeks and sustained through 20 weeks. Objective: To analyze the etiopathogenic role of genetic polymorphisms and serum levels of surfactant protein-D (SP-D) in primary Sjögren syndrome (pSS)., Methods: We analyzed 210 consecutive patients with pSS. SFTPD genotyping (M11T polymorphism rs721917) was analyzed by sequence-based typing and serum SP-D by ELISA., Results: Thirty-two patients (15%) had the Thr11/Thr11 genotype, 80 (38%) the Met11/Met11 genotype, and 96 (46%) the Met11/Thr11 genotype; 2 patients could not be genotyped. Patients carrying the Thr11/Thr11 genotype had a higher prevalence of renal involvement (13% vs 1% and 4% in comparison with patients carrying the other genotypes, p = 0.014). Serum SP-D levels were analyzed in 119 patients (mean 733.94 ± 49.88 ng/ml). No significant association was found between serum SP-D levels and the SP-D genotypes. Higher mean values of serum SP-D were observed in patients with severe scintigraphic involvement (851.10 ± 685.69 vs 636.07 ± 315.93 ng/ml, p = 0.038), interstitial pulmonary disease (1053.60 ± 852.03 vs 700.36 ± 479.33 ng/ml, p = 0.029), renal involvement (1880.64 ± 1842.79 vs 716.42 ± 488.01 ng/ml, p = 0.002), leukopenia (899.83 ± 661.71 vs 673.13 ± 465.88 ng/ml, p = 0.038), positive anti-Ro/SS-A (927.26 ± 731.29 vs 642.75 ± 377.23 ng/ml, p = 0.006), and positive anti-La/SS-B (933.28 ± 689.63 vs 650.41 ± 428.14 ng/ml, p = 0.007), while lower mean values of serum SP-D were observed in patients with bronchiectasis (489.49 vs 788.81 ng/ml, p = 0.019)., Conclusion: In pSS, high SP-D levels were found in patients with severe glandular involvement, hypergammaglobulinemia, leukopenia, extraglandular manifestations, and positive anti-Ro/La antibodies. The specific association between SP-D levels and pulmonary and renal involvements may have pathophysiological implications.

The response of the codling moth (Cydia pomonella L. (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae)) to different emission values of its main pheromone component, 8E,10E-dodecadien-1-ol (codlemone), was investigated in three field trials conducted in plots without mating disruption treatments. Moth catches obtained in traps baited with pheromone dispensers were correlated with the corresponding codlemone release rates by multiple regression analysis. In a preliminary trial conducted in Lleida (NE Spain), a decreasing trend of captures was observed based on increasing pheromone levels. After this, the pheromone release profiles of the pheromone dispensers were studied, in parallel with the field trials, by residual codlemone extraction and gas chromatography quantification. In the trials carried out in Asturias (NW Spain), a correlation between trap catches and emission levels (within the range from 11 to 1,078 μg/d) was found and fitted a logarithmic model. Captures followed a decreasing linear trend in the range of emission rates from 11 to 134 μg/d. Given that release values comprised between 11 and 67 μg/d did not lead to significantly different catches in traps, this emission range could be considered to develop effective formulations for attraction purposes when mating disruption is not acting in the environment.
