Objective: This study aimed to examine the role of long non-coding RNA PCED1B antisense RNA 1 (PCED1B-AS1) in the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)., Methods: A total of 62 pairs of HCC tissues and adjacent non-tumor tissues were obtained from 62 HCC patients. The interactions of PCED1B-AS1 and microRNA-34a (miR-34a) were detected by dual luciferase activity assay and RNA pull-down assay. The RNA expression levels of PCED1B-AS1, miR-34a and CD44 were detected by RT-qPCR, and the protein expression level of CD44 was determined by Western blotting. The cell proliferation was detected by cell proliferation assay, and the cell invasion and migration by transwell invasion assay. The HCC tumor growth after PCED1B-AS1 was downregulated was determined by in vivo animal study., Results: PCED1B-AS1 was highly expressed in HCC tissues, which was associated with poor survival of HCC patients. Furthermore, PCED1B-AS1 interacted with miR-34a in HCC cells, but they did not regulate the expression of each other. Additionally, PCED1B-AS1 increased the expression level of CD44, which was targeted by miR-34a. The cell proliferation and invasion assay revealed that miR-34a inhibited the proliferation and invasion of HCC in vitro, while CD44 exhibited the opposite effects. Furthermore, PCED1B-AS1 suppressed the role of miR-34a. Moreover, the knockdown of PCED1B-AS1 repressed the HCC tumor growth in nude mice in vivo., Conclusion: PCED1B-AS1 may play an oncogenic role by regulating the miR-34a/CD44 axis in HCC., (© 2024. The aim of this work is to explore the effects of herbal medicine on secondary metabolites of microorganisms during fermentation. Clonostachys rogersoniana was found to metabolize only small amounts of polyketide glycosides rogerson B and C on fresh potatoes, but after replacing the medium to the medicinal plant Rubus delavayi Franch., the type and content of the metabolized polyketones showed significant changes. The sugars and glycosides in R. delavayi are probably responsible for the changes in secondary metabolites. Six polyketide glycosides including a new metabolite, rogerson F, and two potential antitumor compounds, TMC-151C and TMC-151D, were isolated from the extract of R. delavayi fermented by C. rogersoniana. In addition, 13 C labeling experiments were used to trace the biosynthesis process of these compounds. TMC-151C and TMC-151D showed significant cytotoxic activity against PANC-1, K562 and HCT116 cancer cells but had no obvious cytotoxic activity against BEAS-2B human normal lung epithelial cells. The yields of TMC-151C and TMC-151D reached 14.37 ± 1.52 g/kg and 1.98 ± 0.43 g/kg, respectively, after fermentation at 28 °C for 30 days. This is the first study to confirm that herbal medicine can induce microbes to metabolize active compounds. We selectively improved the viewing angle characteristics and light extraction efficiency of blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) by tailoring a nanofiber-shaped Si 3 N 4 layer, which was used as an internal scattering layer. The diameter of the polymer nanofibers changed according to the mass ratio of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) in the polymer solution for electrospinning. The Si 3 N 4 nanofiber (SNF) structure was fabricated by etching an Si 3 N 4 film using the PAN/PMMA nanofiber as a mask, making it easier to adjust parameters, such as the diameter, open ratio, and height, even though the SNF structure was randomly shaped. The SNF structures exhibited lower transmittance and higher haze with increasing diameter, showing little correlation with their height. However, all the structures demonstrated a total transmittance of over 80%. Finally, by applying the SNF structures to the blue TADF OLEDs, the external quantum efficiency was increased by 15.6%. In addition, the current and power efficiencies were enhanced by 23.0% and 25.6%, respectively. The internal light-extracting SNF structure also exhibited a synergistic effect with the external light-extracting structure. Furthermore, when the viewing angle changed from 0° to 60°, the peak wavelength and CIE coordinate shift decreased from 20 to 6 nm and from 0.0561 to 0.0243, respectively. These trends were explained by the application of Snell's law to the light path and were ultimately validated through finite-difference time-domain simulations.

Luminous efficiency is a pivotal factor for assessing the performance of optoelectronic devices, wherein light loss caused by diverse factors is harvested and converted into the radiative mode. In this study, we demonstrate a nanoscale vacuum photonic crystal layer (nVPCL) for light extraction enhancement. A corrugated semi-transparent electrode incorporating a periodic hollow-structure array was designed through a simulation that utilizes finite-difference time-domain computational analysis. The corrugated profile, stemming from the periodic hollow structure, was fabricated using laser interference lithography, which allows the precise engineering of various geometrical parameters by controlling the process conditions. The semi-transparent electrode consisted of a 15 nm thick Ag film, which acted as the exit mirror and induced microcavity resonance. When applied to a conventional green organic light-emitting diode (OLED) structure, the optimized nVPCL-integrated device demonstrated a 21.5% enhancement in external quantum efficiency compared to the reference device. Further, the full width at half maximum exhibited a 27.5% reduction compared to that of the reference device, demonstrating improved color purity. This study presents a novel approach by applying a hybrid thin film electrode design to optoelectronic devices to enhance optical efficiency and color purity.

The fungus Nectria sp. MHHJ-3 was isolated from Illigera rhodantha. A molecular networking-guided the secondary metabolites investigation of Nectria sp. MHHJ-3 led to the isolation of ten metabolites (1-10), including two new naphthalenone derivatives, nectrianaphthalenones A (1) and B (2), and two new steroids, nectriasteroids A (3) and B (4). Their structures were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analysis including the HRESIMS, 1D/2D NMR and electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra. A plausible biosynthetic pathway for 1-2 was proposed. Compounds 1 and 2 exhibited moderate acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitory activities. Compounds 3 and 4 showed significant cytotoxic activity against selected tumor cells. Background: Ferroptosis is an emerging type of regulated cell death and associated with antitumoral therapy, while some microRNAs have been shown to regulate the tumorigenesis and cancer progression. Meanwhile, polyphyllin I (PPI) has exhibited antitumoral effects by promoting cancer cell apoptosis and ferroptosis. However, it is unclear whether PPI induces cancer cell ferroptosis by regulating microRNAs. Methods: We used two gastric cancer cell lines (AGS and MKN-45) to set up a tumor model of the nude mice, which were then treated daily with PPI to measure the cancer growth in vitro and in vivo . Ferroptosis was measured using immunofluorescence staining and flow cytometric analysis according to levels of intracellular ROS, lipid ROS and ferrous ions. Moreover, NRF2 expression was measured by Western blotting. In some experiments, the mimics or inhibitors of miR-124-3p were used to further confirm its involvement in PPI-induced cancer cell ferroptosis. Results: Here we found that miR-124-3p mediated cancer ferroptosis and tumor repression induced by PPI since PPI increased miR-124-3p expression in gastric cancer cells and promoted their ferroptosis, whereas inhibition of miR-124-3p mostly abolished the effects of PPI on tumor growth, ferroptosis and NRF2 expression. Moreover, miR-124-3p mimics promoted cancer cell ferroptosis by downregulating NRF2 through directly targeting 3'-UTR region of NRF2, confirming a role for miR-124-3p in regulating PPI-induced ferroptosis. Conclusion: PPI exerts its antitumoral effects on the gastric cancer by promoting cell ferroptosis via regulating miR-124-3p. Tubulointerstitial fibrosis (TIF) makes a key role in diabetic kidney disease (DKD). In this study, we revealed that the expressions of Egr1 and protease-activated receptor 1 (PAR1) were increased in renal tissues of DKD rats. In vitro experiments demonstrated that both Egr1 overexpression and high glucose (HG) condition could promote the expressions of PAR1, fibronectin (FN) and collagen I (COL I). Furthermore, HG stimulation enhanced the binding capacity of Egr1 to PAR1 promoter. Both HG condition and Egr1 upregulation could increase, and thrombin inhibitor did not affect activity of TGF-β1/Smad pathway via PAR1. To interact with humans more precisely and naturally, social robots need to "perceive" human engagement intention, especially need to recognize the main interaction person in multi-person interaction scenarios. By analyzing the intensity of human engagement intention (IHEI), social robots can distinguish the intention of different persons. Most existing research in this field mainly focus on analyzing whether a person has the intention to interact with the robot while lack of analysis of IHEI. In this regard, this paper proposes an approach for recognizing the engagement intention intensity. Four categories of visual features, including line of sight, head pose, distance and expression of human, are captured, and a CatBoost-based machine learning model is applied to train an optimal classifier for predicting the IHEI on the dataset. The experimental results show that this classifier can effectively predict the IHEI that can be applied into real human-robot interaction scenarios. Moreover, the proposed model is an interpretable machine learning model, where interpretability analysis on the trained classifier has been done to explore the deep associations between input features and engagement intention, thereby providing robust and effective robot social decision-making., (© 2023. Background: The role and underlying mechanism of liver macrophages and their derived miR-155-5p in hepatic lymphangiogenesis in liver fibrosis remain unclear. Here, we investigated the mechanism by which macrophages and miR-155-5p were involved in lymphangiogenesis during liver fibrosis and cirrhosis., Methods: In vivo , hepatic lymphatic vessel expansion was evaluated; the liver macrophage subsets, proportion of peripherally-derived macrophages and expressions of CCL25, MCP-1, VAP-1 and MAdCAM-1 were documented; and miR-155-5p in the peripheral blood and liver was detected. In vitro , macrophages with miR-155-5p overexpression and inhibition were used to clarify the effect of miR-155-5p on regulation of macrophage polarization and the possible signalling pathway., Results: Hepatic lymphangiogenesis was observed in mice with liver fibrosis and cirrhosis challenged with carbon tetrachloride (CCl4). In the liver, the number of M1 macrophages was associated with lymphangiogenesis and the degree of fibrosis. The liver recruitment of peripherally-derived macrophages occurred during liver fibrosis. The levels of miR-155-5p in the liver and peripheral blood gradually increased with aggravation of liver fibrosis. In vitro , SOCS1, a target of miR-155-5p, regulated macrophage polarization into the M1 phenotype through the JAK1/STAT1 pathway., Conclusion: MiR-155-5p-SOCS1/JAK1/STAT1 pathway participates in hepatic lymphangiogenesis in mice with liver fibrosis and cirrhosis induced by CCl4 by regulating the polarization of macrophages into the M1 phenotype.

Thiodiglycolic acid (TDGA) is a biomarker for monitoring vinyl chloride exposure. Exploring a facile, rapid and precise analysis technology to quantify TDGA is of great significance. In this research, we demonstrate a fluorescent sensor based on dual-emissive UiO-66 for TDGA detection. This ratiometric fluorescent material named C460@Tb-UiO-66-(COOH) 2 was designed and synthesized by introducing organic dye 7-diethylamino-4-methylcoumarin (C460) and Tb 3+ into UiO-66-(COOH) 2 . The as-obtained C460@Tb-UiO-66-(COOH) 2 samples showed highly selective recognition, excellent anti-interference and rapid response characteristics for the recognition of TDGA. The detection limit is 0.518 mg·mL -1 , which is much lower than the threshold of 20 mg·mL -1 for a healthy person. In addition, the mechanism of TDGA-induced fluorescence quenching is discussed in detail. This sensor is expected to detect TDGA content in human urine.

Birefringent materials with large birefringence play an important role in in laser science and technology owing to their ability to modulate polarized light. However, the lack of systematic and effective synthesis strategies severely hinders the development of novel superior birefringent materials. Herein, the cation-anion synergetic interaction strategy was proposed to successfully synthesize two excellent UV birefringent materials, RbSb(C 2 O 4 )F 2 ·H 2 O and [C(NH 2 ) 3 ]Sb(C 2 O 4 )F 2 ·H 2 O. Both compounds feature unprecedented [Sb(C 2 O 4 )F 2 ] ∞ - anionic chains composed of planar π-conjugated [C 2 O 4 ] 2- units and a distorted SbO 4 F 2 complex with stereochemically active lone pairs, which induce a large optical anisotropy. Remarkably, further enhancement of birefringence in [C(NH 2 ) 3 ]Sb(C 2 O 4 )F 2 ·H 2 O was achieved via cation-anion synergetic interactions between the [C(NH 2 ) 3 ] + cationic groups and [Sb(C 2 O 4 )F 2 ] ∞ - anionic chains. It exhibited a giant birefringence of 0.323@546 nm, twice larger than that of its analogue RbSb(C 2 O 4 )F 2 ·H 2 O (0.162@546 nm). A detailed structural analysis and theoretical calculations revealed that the cation-anion synergetic interaction strategy is an effective strategy for the efficient exploration of superior birefringent materials, which will guide the further exploration of new structure-driven functional materials.

As an important biomarker in urine, the level of uric acid is of importance for human health. In this work, a Cu(II) functionalized metal-organic framework (Cu 2+ @Tb-MOFs) is designed and developed as a novel fluorescence probe for wide-range uric acid detection in human urine. The study shows that this fluorescence platform demonstrated excellent pH-independent stability, high water tolerance, and good thermal stability. Based on the strong interaction between metal ions and uric acid, the designed Cu 2+ @Tb-MOFs can be employed as efficient turn-on fluorescent probes for the detection of uric acid with wide detection range (0~10 4 µM) and high sensitivity (LOD = 0.65 µM). This probe also demonstrates an anti-interference property, as other species coexisted, and the possibility for recycling. The sensing mechanisms are further discussed at length. More importantly, we experimentally constructed a molecular logic gate operation based on this fluorescence probe for intelligent detection of uric acid. These results suggest the Cu(II) functionalized metal-organic framework can act as a prominent candidate for personalized monitoring of the concentration of uric acid in the human urine system.

Global optimization of multicomponent cluster structures is considerably time-consuming due to the existence of a vast number of isomers. In this work, we proposed an improved self-adaptive differential evolution with the neighborhood search (SaNSDE) algorithm and applied it to the global optimization of bimetallic cluster structures. The cross operation was optimized, and an improved basin hopping module was introduced to enhance the searching efficiency of SaNSDE optimization. Taking (PtNi) N ( N = 38 or 55) bimetallic clusters as examples, their structures were predicted by using this algorithm. The traditional SaNSDE algorithm was carried out for comparison with the improved SaNSDE algorithm. For all the optimized clusters, the excess energy and the second difference of the energy were calculated to examine their relative stabilities. Meanwhile, the bond order parameters were adopted to quantitatively characterize the cluster structures. The results reveal that the improved SaNSDE algorithm possessed significantly higher searching capability and faster convergence speed than the traditional SaNSDE algorithm. Furthermore, the lowest-energy configurations of (PtNi) 38 clusters could be classified as the truncated octahedral and disordered structures. In contrast, all the optimal (PtNi) 55 clusters were approximately icosahedral. Our work fully demonstrates the high efficiency of the improved algorithm and advances the development of global optimization algorithms and the structural prediction of multicomponent clusters.

This paper proposes a new foresight approach to estimate the impact of public health emergencies on hotel demand. The forecasting-based influence evaluation consists of four modules: decomposing hotel demand before an emergency, matching each decomposed component to a forecasting model, combining the predictions as the expected demand after the emergency, and estimating the impact by comparing actual demand against that predicted. The method is applied to analyze the impact of COVID-19 on Macao's hotel industry. The core factors affecting the efficiency of photocatalysis are predominantly centered on controllable modulation of anisotropic spatial charge separation/transfer and regulating vectorial charge transport pathways in photoredox catalysis, yet it still meets with limited success. Herein, we first conceptually demonstrate the rational design of unidirectional cascade charge transfer channels over transition metal chalcogenide nanosheets (TMC NSs: ZnIn 2 S 4 , CdS, CdIn 2 S 4 , and In 2 S 3 ), which is synergistically enabled by a solid-state non-conjugated polymer, i.e. , poly(diallyldimethyl ammonium chloride) (PDDA), and MXene quantum dots (MQDs). In such elaborately designed photosystems, an ultrathin PDDA layer functions as an intermediate charge transport mediator to relay the directional electron transfer from TMC NSs to MQDs that serve as the ultimate electron traps, resulting in a considerably boosted charge separation/migration efficiency. The suitable energy level alignment between TMC NSs and MQDs, concurrent electron-withdrawing capabilities of the ultrathin PDDA interim layer and MQDs, and the charge transport cascade endow the self-assembled TMC/PDDA/MQD heterostructured photosystems with conspicuously improved photoactivities toward anaerobic selective reduction of nitroaromatics to amino derivatives and photocatalytic hydrogen evolution under visible light irradiation. Furthermore, we ascertain that this concept of constructing a charge transfer cascade in such TMC-insulating polymer-MQD photosystems is universal. Satellite-derived normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) data are increasingly relied on to reveal the growth responses of vegetation to climate change, yet the vegetation growth tracking accuracy of these data remains unclear due to a lack of long-term field data. Here, we adopted a unique field-measured seasonal aboveground biomass dataset from 1982-2014 to assess the potential of using satellite-derived NDVI data to match field data in regard to the interannual variability in seasonal vegetation growth in a Tibetan alpine grassland. We revealed that Global Inventory Monitoring and Modeling System (GIMMS) NDVI data captured the advancement of field-measured vegetation growth throughout the entire study period but not from 2000-2014, while MODIS NDVI data still observed this advancing trend after 2000 to a limited extent. However, satellite-derived NDVI data consistently underestimated the advancement degree of field-measured vegetation growth, regardless of whether GIMMS or MODIS NDVI data were considered. We tentatively attribute this underestimation to an increased ratio of grass biomass to forb biomass, which could delay the advancement of NDVI development but not affect that of field-measured biomass development. Demographics and psychographics are used to study the influence of different consumers on product effects in food development and testing. Demographics have a longer history and are routinely used in most research; psychographics are more recent, raising the question of whether they add to research on food products. The research presented here represents extensive exploratory data that demonstrate that both demographic measures and psychographic measures add to our understanding of consumer's liking ratings for nutrient supplements. The results are discussed in the context of broader research on a range of food products. In addition, the research reported here was conducted in four different countries, demonstrating many country effects. Finally, tests were conducted with users of the products, lapsed users of the product, and users of other nutrient supplements (non-users), and this led to many differences in product testing. These results further suggest that age and gender are not the only demographic variables to be studied, along with psychographic variables. The psychographic variables should be selected for a particular product category under investigation, as effects of specific psychographic measures vary for product categories. Specific variables do not fit all products for both demographics and psychographics.

The series of alkali-metal tin chloride sulfates A 3 Sn 2 (SO 4 ) 3- x Cl 1+2 x (A = K, Rb, Cs; x = 0, 1), K 3 Sn 2 (SO 4 ) 3 Cl, Rb 3 Sn 2 (SO 4 ) 2 Cl 3 , and Cs 3 Sn 2 (SO 4 ) 2 Cl 3 , were successfully synthesized through an improved mild hydrothermal method. Interestingly, in addition to the cation size effect, the structure-directing effect of anions induces different symmetries in the three title compounds, with K 3 Sn 2 (SO 4 ) 3 Cl being noncentrosymmetric, while Rb 3 Sn 2 (SO 4 ) 2 Cl 3 and Cs 3 Sn 2 (SO 4 ) 2 Cl 3 are centrosymmetric. Powder second-harmonic generation (SHG) measurements indicate that K 3 Sn 2 (SO 4 ) 3 Cl is a nonlinear optical material that is type I phase matchable with a weak SHG response (0.1× KDP). Photoluminescence tests reveal that the three title compounds emit strong greenish yellow, orange, and salmon light, respectively, under UV excitation, indicating that they are promising inorganic solid fluorescent materials. Simultaneously, a detailed structural analysis of all the known tin(II) halide sulfates has been performed, which will guide the systematic exploration of high-performance tin(II)-based functional materials in the future.

Background: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a refractory disease with unclear etiology. Studies have shown that UC is closely associated with gut microbiota dysbiosis. Adsorptive granulomonocytapheresis (GMA) using an Adacolumn has been found to treat UC effectively, but its underlying mechanism of treatment has not been fully elucidated. In this study, we aimed to investigate the influence of GMA on the gut microbiota in patients with active UC., Methods: We conducted a single-center prospective analysis of patients with active UC who received GMA therapy and ultimately achieved clinical remission. Stool samples of healthy controls and patients before and after 5 or 10 sessions of GMA therapy were collected. Subsequently, high-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA V3 and V4 gene region of the stool was conducted and clustering of operational taxonomic units and species annotation were performed., Results: Gut microbial profiles in patients with UC were characterized by low bacterial diversity. After 5 or 10 sessions of GMA therapy, the gut microbiota diversity in patients with UC increased and was similar to that of healthy controls. UC was further characterized by increased abundances of Proteobacteria and Bacteroides, as well as decreased abundances of Faecalibacterium, Roseburia, Firmicutes, and Dialister; however, after GMA therapy, the abundance of Bacteroides decreased, whereas those of Faecalibacterium, Roseburia, and Firmicutes increased., Conclusions: Active UC is associated with gut microbiota dysbiosis. The fermentation of biomass allows for the generation of major renewable ethanol biofuel that has high energy density favorable for direct alcohol fuel cells in alkaline media. However, selective conversion of ethanol to either CO 2 or acetate remains a great challenge. Especially, the ethanol-to-acetate route usually demonstrates decentoxidation current density relative to the ethanol-to-CO 2 route that contains strongly adsorbed poisons. This makes the total oxidation of ethanol to CO 2 unnecessary. Here, we present a highly active ethanol oxidation electrocatalyst that was prepared by in situ decorating highly dispersed Mo sites on Pd nanosheets (MoO x /Pd) via a surfactant-free and facile route. We found that ∼2 atom % of Mo on Pd nanosheets increases the current density to 3.8 A mg Pd -1 , around 2 times more active relative to the undecorated Pd nanosheets, achieving nearly 100% faradic efficiency for the ethanol-to-acetate conversion in an alkaline electrolyte without the generation of detectable CO 2 , evidenced by in situ electrochemical infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, and ion chromatography. The selective and CO 2 -free conversion offers a promising strategy through alcohol fuel cells for contributing comparable current density to power electrical equipment while for selective oxidation of biofuels to useful acetate intermediate for the chemical industry.

Caspase-3/8 are key members of the cysteine-aspartyl protease family with pivotal roles in apoptosis. We have designed and synthesized self-assembling probes, Nap-GFFpYDEVD-AFC and Nap-GFFpYIETD-AFC, with fluorescence 'turn-on' properties for real-time monitoring of Caspase-3/8 activity in living cells.

Abnormal crosstalk between gut immune and the liver was involved in nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Mice with methionine choline-deficient (MCD) diet-induced NASH presented an imbalance of pro-(IL-6 and IFN-γ) and anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-10) in the intestine. We also clarified that the ratio of CD4 + T cells and found that the NASH mesenteric lymph node (MLN) presents decreased numbers of CD4 + Th17 cells but increased numbers of CD4 + CD8 + FoxP3 + regulatory T cells (Tregs). Furthermore, the intestinal immune imbalance in NASH was attributed to impaired gut chemokine receptor 9 (CCR9)/chemokine ligand 25 (CCL25) signalling, which is a crucial pathway for immune cell homing in the gut. We also demonstrated that CD4 + CCR9 + T cell homing was dependent on CCL25 and that the numbers and migration abilities of CD4 + CCR9 + T cells were reduced in NASH. Interestingly, the analysis of dendritic cell (DC) subsets showed that the numbers and retinal dehydrogenase (RALDH) activity of CD103 + CD11b + DCs were decreased and that the ability of these cells to upregulate CD4 + T cell CCR9 expression was damaged in NASH. Taken together, impaired intestinal CCR9/CCL25 signalling induced by CD103 + CD11b + DC dysfunction contributes to the gut immune imbalance observed in NASH., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Inc. In this work, BaYF 5 :20%Yb 3+ /2%Er 3+ / x %Bi 3+ (abbreviated as BaYF 5 :Yb,Er,Bi x , where x = 0-3.0) upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) with various doping concentrations of Bi 3+ were synthesized through a simple hydrothermal method. The influence of the doping amount of Bi 3+ on the microstructures and upconversion luminescence (UCL) properties of the BaYF 5 :Yb,Er,Bi x UCNPs was studied in detail. The doping concentration of Bi 3+ has little influence on the microstructures of the UCNPs but significantly impacts their UCL intensities. Under excitation of a 980 nm near-IR laser, the observed UCL intensities for the BaYF 5 :Yb,Er,Bi x UCNPs display first an increasing trend and then a decreasing trend with an increase in the ratio x , giving a maximum at x = 2.5. A possible energy-transfer process and simplified energy levels of the BaYF 5 :Yb,Er,Bi x UCNPs were proposed. The potential of the BaYF 5 :Yb,Er,Bi x UCNPs as contrast agents for computerized tomography (CT) imaging was successfully demonstrated. An obvious accumulation of BaYF 5 :Yb,Er,Bi x in tumor sites was achieved because of high passive targeting by the enhanced permeability and retention effect and relatively low uptake by a reticuloendothelial system such as liver and spleen. This work paves a new route for the design of luminescence-enhanced UNCPs as promising bioimaging agents for cancer theranostics.

A novel noncentrosymmetric (NCS) metal-free formic-borate, (NH4)3[B(OH)3]2(COOH)3, has been discovered, which exhibits an infrequent graphite-like structure. The alliance of two types of π-conjugated planar anions BO33- and COOH- produced an optimized layered structure to maximize the anisotropic polarizability, resulting in an extremely large birefringence (0.156@546 nm), larger than that of the classical commercial UV birefringent material α-BBO (0.122@546 nm). This strategy that structural optimization could enhance birefringence will guide the discovery of large birefringence materials, especially in the UV region.

Background: Myeloid-derived leucocytes, a major source of inflammatory cytokines, play an important role in the exacerbation of ulcerative colitis (UC). Selective depletion of myeloid leucocytes by adsorptive granulomonocytapheresis (GMA) with an Adacolumn should alleviate inflammation and promote remission. However, there are discrepancies among the reported efficacy outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of GMA in UC patients with a focus on factors affecting clinical efficacy., Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of 50 patients with active UC who had received GMA therapy. GMA efficacy was evaluated based on the Rachmilewitz's clinical activity index (CAI) and Mayo endoscopic score for mucosal healing. Laboratory findings were analyzed to demonstrate any relationship with the GMA-responder or nonresponder feature. Adverse events were recorded during and after GMA therapy., Results: The overall clinical remission rate (CAI ≤4) was 79.2%, and among these, the mucosal healing rate was 59.2%. The clinical remission rate was 69.2% in patients who received 5 GMA sessions and 82.3% in patients who received 10 sessions. Significantly higher baseline CAIs and lower albumin and hemoglobin levels were observed in nonremission cases compared with those who achieved remission. Four patients (8%) experienced transient adverse events, but none were severe., Conclusions: GMA was favored by patients because of its safety and nonpharmacological treatment options. Background: Postoperative acute kidney injury (AKI) is a complex pathological process involved intrarenal and systemic inflammation caused by renal hypoperfusion, nephrotoxic drugs and urinary obstruction. Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is a marker of inflammation reflecting the progress of many diseases. However, whether NLR at admission can predict the occurrence of AKI after surgery in the intensive care unit (ICU) remains unknown., Aim: To clarify the relationship between NLR and the occurrence of AKI in patients with gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary surgery in the ICU., Methods: A retrospective analysis of 282 patients receiving surgical ICU care after gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary surgery in our hospital from December 2014 to December 2018 was performed., Results: Postoperative AKI occurred in 84 patients (29.79%) in this cohort. NLR by the multivariate analysis was an independent risk factor for occurrence of postoperative AKI in patients with gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary surgery in the ICU. In this cohort, receiver operating characteristic curves of AKI occurrence showed that the optimal cut-off value of NLR was 8.380. NLR was found to be significantly correlated with the white blood cell count, neutrophil count, lymphocyte count, arterial lactate and dialysis ( P < 0.05). Additionally, NLR value at admission was higher in AKI patients compared with the non-AKI patients and increased with the severity of AKI. Patients with NLR ≥ 8.380 exhibited significantly higher incidences of postoperative AKI and severe AKI than patients with NLR < 8.380 (AKI: 38.12% vs 14.85%, P < 0.001; severe AKI: 14.36% vs 1.98%, P = 0.001)., Conclusion: NLR at admission is a predictor of AKI occurrence in patients with gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary surgery in ICU. Platelet-derived growth receptor α (PDGFRα) is a key factor in many pathophysiological processes. The expression level of PDGFRα is significantly elevated in the early stage of liver development and maintained at a lower level in adult normal livers. In this study, we constructed a liver-specific PDGFRαD842 mutant transgenic (TG) mice model to explore the effect of continuous activation of PDGFRα on liver regeneration and hepatocarcinogenesis. 14-day-old TG and wild-type (WT) mice were intraperitoneally injected with diethylnitrosamine (DEN) at a dose of 25 μg/g body weight. Two-month-old male TG and WT mice were subjected to partial hepatectomy (PH). The liver tissues were collected for further analysis at different time points. Overexpression of PDGFRα D842V and its target genes, Akt, c-myc and cyclin D1 in hepatocytes with no overt phenotype versus WT mice were compared. Unexpectedly, a dramatic decrease in hepatocyte proliferation was noted after PH in TG versus WT mice, possibly due to the downregulation of hepatocyte growth factor receptor (MET) and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). No TG mice developed HCC spontaneously after 14 months follow-up. However, TG mice were more resistant to DEN-induced hapatocarcinogenesis at 6, 10, and 12 months of age, showing delayed hepatocyte proliferation and apoptosis, lower tumor incidence, smaller size and fewer number, compared with age-matched WTs, partially through downregulation of MET and EGFR. In conclusion, continuous activation of PDGFRα signaling by expression of PDGFRα D842V does not promote, but inhibit hepatic regeneration and hepatocarcinogenesis, possibly through compensatory downregulation of MET and EGFR., Competing Interests: Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interest exists., (© The author(s).)

Two new metal phosphates, namely, Zn(HPO 4 )(C 6 H 11 NO 2 ) (1) and (C 5 H 10 NO 2 )Ga 4 (PO 4 ) 4 F·3H 2 O (2), were prepared under surfactant-thermal conditions. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses reveal that compound 1 has a zigzag-chain structure decorated with homoproline and compound 2 has a three-dimensional zeolite-like structure templated by proline. Notably, compound 2 remains stable in both boiling water and aqueous solutions with a pH range of 2-12. It shows a proton conductivity of 8.89 × 10 -4 S cm -1 at 85 °C and 95% relative humidity.

KTiOPO4 (KTP) is a classic commercial nonlinear optical (NLO) crystal, but its narrow bandgap (3.52 eV) prevents its practical application in the ultraviolet (UV) region. Many trials to widen the narrow bandgap of KTP have failed in the past few decades. A chemical cosubstitution strategy was implemented to design new members of the KTP-type family as potential UV NLO materials. First, a novel centrosymmetric KTP-type compound NH4SbFPO4·H2O with a sharply enlarged bandgap (5.01 eV) was obtained through three-site aliovalent substitution. Second, the noncentrosymmetric NH4SbF2SO4 was synthesized by the introduction of more F- anions to destroy the crystal symmetry and SO42- to replace PO43- for balancing the charge in NH4SbFPO4·H2O, which realized the transformation from a visible phosphate system to solar blind UV sulfate system for KTP-type family NLO materials. The preliminary experimental results indicated that NH4SbF2SO4 is a promising solar blind UV NLO material. The first-principles calculations revealed that the sharply enlarged bandgap resulted from the substitution of the transition metal cations with the main group metal cations and the introduction of F- anions with high electronegativity.

In general, searching the lowest-energy structures is considerably more time-consuming for bimetallic clusters than for monometallic ones because of the presence of an increasing number of homotops and geometrical isomers. In this article, a basin hopping genetic algorithm (BHGA), in which the genetic algorithm is implanted into the basin hopping (BH) method, is proposed to search the lowest-energy structures of 13-, 38-, and 55-atom PtCo bimetallic clusters. The results reveal that the proposed BHGA, as compared with the standard BH method, can markedly improve the convergent speed for global optimization and the possibility for finding the global minima on the potential energy surface. Meanwhile, referencing the monometallic structures in initializations may further raise the searching efficiency. For all the optimized clusters, both the excess energy and the second difference of the energy are calculated to examine their relative stabilities at different atomic ratios. The bond order parameter, the similarity function, and the shape factor are also adopted to quantitatively characterize the cluster structures. The results indicate that the 13- and the 55-atom systems tend to be icosahedral despite different degrees of lattice distortions. In contrast, for the 38-atom system, Pt 10 Co 28 , Pt 11 Co 27 , Pt 17 Co 21 , Pt 19 Co 19 , Pt 20 Co 18 , and Pt 30 Co 8 tend to be disordered, while Pt 21 Co 17 presents a defected face-centered cubic (fcc) structure, and the remaining clusters are perfect fcc. The methodology and results of this work have referential significance to the exploration of other alloy clusters.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are extremely harmful to the human body and environment, thus it is greatly meaningful and urgent to detect VOCs. In this work, terbium-based metal-organic frameworks (Tb-MOFs) have been prepared successfully via a facile and efficient route. These well-constructed Tb-MOFs architectures exhibit characteristic green emission of Tb 3+ ion upon excitation of UV light. It is noteworthy that the Tb-MOFs can act as a convenient and efficient luminescent sensor for VOCs. Especially, the Tb-MOFs displayed high selectivity and superior sensitivity towards the sensing of styrene solution and vapor through fluorescence quenching mechanism. The Tb-MOFs can realize fast detection for styrene vapor with a response time of 30 s. The mechanism of fluorescence quenching of Tb-MOFs induced by styrene was also discussed. More importantly, we have designed a logic gate operation with the combination of the sensor for the intelligent detection of styrene. Nitrogen (N) losses from agricultural production contribute to detrimental impacts on water, soil, air, and human health. However, it is still lacking in evaluating global N budgets in agricultural systems. Hence, we conducted a global analysis on the current status of the N flows in the agricultural systems, explored the possible mitigation measures and challenges, and investigated the existing regulations on controlling N pollution. Globally, agricultural soils received a total of 73 kg of N ha -1 year -1 on average, including N fertilizer plus manure (61%), atmospheric N deposition (10%), and N litters and fixation (29%). The estimated global NH 3 loss to total N inputs was 17%, which led to a loss of $15 billion year -1 . The N use efficiency (NUE) in Eastern China (33%) was much lower than that in the Eastern United States (65%) or Western Europe (61%), leaving much room to enhance the NUE to increase agricultural food production. Meanwhile, higher NH 3 losses from N fertilizers and manure were found in Eastern China (22%) than the Eastern United States (17%) and Western Europe (17%). We highlight the urgency to improve the NUE and decrease NH 3 loss with lower environmental consequences. Our results showed high potentials to mitigate NH 3 volatilization and enhance the NUE by various measures, such as substituting manure N for chemical fertilizer N, applying controlled release fertilizers, and urease inhibitors. These measures should be implemented in combination with the transfer of knowledge to farmers with new technologies and increasing the farm size to enhance the efficiency of agricultural production in the future.

Background: Acute pancreatitis (AP) is often associated with intestinal injury, which in turn exaggerates the progression of AP. Our recent study has shown that a low level of serum irisin, a novel exercise-induced hormone, is associated with poor outcomes in patients with AP and irisin administration protects against experimental AP. However, the role of irisin in intestinal injury in AP has not been evaluated., Aim: To investigate the effect of irisin administration on intestinal injury in experimental AP., Methods: AP was induced in male adult mice by two hourly intraperitoneal injections of L-arginine. At 2 h after the last injection of L-arginine, irisin (50 or 250 μg/kg body weight) or 1 mL normal saline (vehicle) was administered through intraperitoneal injection. The animals were sacrificed at 72 h after the induction of AP. Intestinal injury, apoptosis, oxidative and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress were evaluated., Results: Administration of irisin significantly mitigated intestinal damage, reduced apoptosis, and attenuated oxidative and ER stress in AP mice. In addition, irisin treatment also effectively downregulated serum tumor necrosis factor-alpha and interleukin-6 levels and alleviated injury in the pancreas, liver and lung of AP mice., Conclusion: Irisin-mediated multiple physiological events attenuate intestinal injury following an episode of AP. CoMoO 4 has gained great attention as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries owing to its high theoretical capacity of 980 mAh g -1 and relatively high electrochemical activity. Unfortunately, CoMoO 4 anode also has some drawbacks such as low electronic/ionic conductivity, inferior cyclic stability, and relative severe volumetric expansion during the lithiation/delithiation process, greatly inhibiting its further development and application. Herein, we report Co 0.8 Zn 0.2 MoO 4 /C nanosheet composite constructed via a novel and facile one-stone-three-birds strategy. The preparation of the Co 0.8 Zn 0.2 MoO 4 /C nanosheet is based on the following two-step process: the formation of Co/Zn nanosheet precursors derived from Co/Zn-ZIF rhombic dodecahedra via solvothermal pretreatment, followed by a calcination treatment with molybdic acid (H 2 MoO 4 ) in air. The as-prepared Co 0.8 Zn 0.2 MoO 4 /C is monoclinic crystal structured composite with the in situ formed active carbon, which is well-defined nanosheet with a rough surface and mean thickness of 60-70 nm for a single sheet. This Co 0.8 Zn 0.2 MoO 4 /C nanosheet composite possesses a larger surface area of 37.60 m 2 g -1 , showing a mesoporous structure. When used as anode materials, the as-obtained Co 0.8 Zn 0.2 MoO 4 /C composite can deliver as high as a discharge capacity of 1337 mAh g -1 after 300 cycles at 0.2C and still retain the capacity of 827 mAh g -1 even after 600 cycles at 1C, exhibiting outstanding lithium storage performances. The higher capacity and superior cyclic stability of the Co 0.8 Zn 0.2 MoO 4 /C composite should be ascribed to the synergistic effect of the substitution of Zn 2+ , in situ composited active carbon and the as-constructed unique microstructure for the Co 0.8 Zn 0.2 MoO 4 /C composite. Our present work provides a facile one-stone-three-birds strategy to effectively construct the architectures and significantly enhance electrochemical performances for other transition metal electrode materials.

Background: Persistent hyperparathyroidism after kidney transplantation has been associated with adverse outcomes. Parathyroidectomy is the definitive treatment approach, but the success of parathyroidectomy relies on the accurate preoperative localization of the culprit parathyroid lesions. Simultaneous intrathyroidal parathyroid adenomas and multifocal papillary thyroid carcinoma present important diagnostic challenges. Here, we describe a patient with kidney transplantation who underwent successful surgery after being evaluated with functional and structural imaging., Case Presentation: A 53-year-old man presented with potentially malignant multifocal thyroid nodules by ultrasonography 2 years after kidney transplantation. The patient had hypercalcaemia and persistent hyperparathyroidism. Thyroid papillary carcinoma was confirmed in the left thyroid nodules by fine-needle aspiration biopsy. The right superior thyroid hypoechoic nodule was 1.2 cm in size and showed marked uptake of the tracer 99m TcO 4 -sestamibi during single-photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography (SPECT/CT); additionally, a cystic parathyroid lesion without tracer uptake was present behind the left superior pole of the thyroid. The histological examination demonstrated the coexistence of right intrathyroidal parathyroid adenomas, left cystic parathyroid nodular hyperplasia and multifocal papillary thyroid carcinoma. At the 6-month follow-up, the serum calcium levels were within the normal range, and the patient's kidney function remained stable., Conclusions: Simultaneous intrathyroidal parathyroid adenomas and multifocal papillary thyroid carcinoma in a patient with kidney transplantation is a rare clinical scenario. Physicians must be aware that the combination of functional (SPECT/CT) and structural (ultrasonography) imaging is highly successful in diagnosing patients with coexistent intrathyroidal parathyroid adenomas and papillary thyroid carcinoma.

Background: Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world. The results of treatment after hypofractionated radiotherapy only have been reported from several small randomized clinical trials. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis to compare clinical outcomes of hypofractionated radiotherapy versus conventional radiotherapy in the treatment of intermediate- to high-risk localized prostate cancer., Methods: Relevant studies were identified through searching related databases till August 2018. Hazard ratio (HR) or risk ratio (RR) with its corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) was used as pooled statistics for all analyses., Results: The meta-analysis results showed that overall survival (HR = 1.12, 95% CI: 0.93-1.35, p = 0.219) and prostate cancer-specific survival (HR = 1.29, 95% CI: 0.42-3.95, p = 0.661) were similar in two groups. The pooled data showed that biochemical failure was RR = 0.90, 95% CI: 0.76-1.07, p = 0.248. The incidence of acute adverse gastrointestinal events (grade ≥ 2) was higher in the hypofractionated radiotherapy (RR = 1.70, 95% CI: 1.12-2.56, p = 0.012); conversely, for late grade ≥ 2 gastrointestinal adverse events, a significant increase in the conventional radiotherapy was found (RR = 0.75, 95% CI: 0.61-0.91, p = 0.003). Acute (RR = 1.01, 95% CI: 0.89-1.15, p = 0.894) and late (RR = 0.98, 95% CI: 0.86-1.10, p = 0.692) genitourinary adverse events (grade ≥ 2) were similar for both treatment groups., Conclusion: Results suggest that the efficacy and risk for adverse events are comparable for hypofractionated radiotherapy and conventional radiotherapy in the treatment of intermediate- to high-risk localized prostate cancer.

A novel antimony fluoride nitrate, Rb3SbF3(NO3)3, fabricated by a rational multi-component design, has been successfully synthesized by a rapid evaporation concentration method. This title compound crystallizes in a polar noncentrosymmetric (NCS) space group (P21) and presents a complicated three-dimensional (3D) network composed of SbO3F3, Rb-centered distorted polyhedra and π-conjugated planar triangular NO3 groups. Rb3SbF3(NO3)3 is a potential UV nonlinear optical material due to its large phase-matchable second harmonic generation (SHG) response of approximately 2.2 times that of KH2PO4 (KDP) and a wide band gap of 3.75 eV. Theoretical calculation analysis was used to rationalize the large SHG effect, which originates from the multi-component synergistic effect including moderately polarizable Rb+ cations, a stereochemically active lone pair effect of Sb3+ and NO3 groups with a π-conjugated planar triangular structure.

Anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC) has a mean survival time of 6 months and accounts for 1-2% of all thyroid tumors. Understanding the underlying molecular mechanisms of carcinogenesis and progression in ATC would contribute to the identification of novel therapeutic targets. A previous study revealed that microRNA (miR)-599 was associated with tumor initiation and development in certain types of cancer. However, the specific functions and mechanisms of miR-599 in ATC are poorly understood. The objective of the present study was to identify its expression, function and molecular mechanism in ATC. The expression levels of miR-599 in 10 pairs of surgical specimens and human ATC cell lines were examined by reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Function assays illustrated that miR-599 overexpression not only suppressed KAT-18 cell viability, proliferation and metastasis in vitro and decreased tumor growth in the tumor xenograft model but also induced cell apoptosis. Furthermore, T-cell intracellular antigen (TIA1), a tumor suppressor, was confirmed as a direct target of miR-599. It was demonstrated that TIA1 silencing rescued the inhibitory effect of migration and invasion induced by the overexpression of miR-599 in KAT-18 cells. In conclusion, the present study revealed that miR-599 inhibited ATC cell growth and metastasis via activation of TIA1. Therefore miR-599 may be a novel molecular therapeutic target for ATC.

DAPK, a transcriptional target of the p53 protein, has long been characterized as a tumor suppressor that acts as a negative regulator in multiple cellular processes. However, increasing studies have suggested that the role of DAPK may vary depending on cell type and cellular context. Thus far, the expression and function of DAPK in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) remain ambiguous. Since ccRCC behaves in an atypical way with respect to p53, whether the p53-DAPK axis functions normally in ccRCC is also an intriguing question. Here, tissue specimens from 61 ccRCC patients were examined for DAPK expression. Functional studies regarding apoptosis, growth, and migration were used to determine the role of DAPK in renal cancer cells. The validity of the p53-DAPK axis in ccRCC was also determined. Our study identified DAPK as a negative regulator of ccRCC, and its expression was reduced in certain subgroups. However, the p53-DAPK axis was disrupted due to upregulation of miR-34a-5p under stressed conditions. miR-34a-5p was identified as a novel repressor of DAPK acting downstream of p53. Inhibition of miR-34a-5p can correct the p53-DAPK axis disruption by upregulating DAPK protein and may have potential to be used as a therapeutic target to improve outcomes for ccRCC patients., (© 2019 The Authors. Background: Cirrhosis is a major risk factor for the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Portal vein thrombosis is not uncommon after splenectomy in cirrhotic patients, and many such patients take oral anticoagulants including aspirin. However, the long-term impact of postoperative aspirin on cirrhotic patients after splenectomy remains unknown., Aim: The main purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of postoperative long-term low-dose aspirin administration on the development of HCC and long-term survival of cirrhotic patients after splenectomy., Methods: The clinical data of 264 adult patients with viral hepatitis-related cirrhosis who underwent splenectomy at the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University from January 2000 to December 2014 were analyzed retrospectively. Among these patients, 59 who started taking 100 mg/d aspirin within seven days were enrolled in the aspirin group. The incidence of HCC and overall survival were analyzed., Results: During follow-up, 41 (15.53%) patients developed HCC and 37 (14.02%) died due to end-stage liver diseases or other serious complications. Postoperative long-term low-dose aspirin therapy reduced the incidence of HCC from 19.02% to 3.40% after splenectomy (log-rank test, P = 0.028). Univariate and multivariate analyses showed that not undertaking postoperative long-term low-dose aspirin therapy [odds ratio (OR) = 6.211, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.142-27.324, P = 0.016] was the only independent risk factor for the development of HCC. Similarly, patients in the aspirin group survived longer than those in the control group (log-rank test, P = 0.041). Univariate and multivariate analyses showed that the only factor that independently associated with improved overall survival was postoperative long-term low-dose aspirin therapy [OR = 0.218, 95%CI: 0.049-0.960, P = 0.044]., Conclusion: In patients with viral hepatitis-related cirrhosis, long-term post-splenectomy administration of low-dose aspirin reduces the incidence of HCC and improves the long-term overall survival., Competing Interests: Conflict-of-interest statement: All authors declare no conflicts of interest related to this article.

Background: Cumulative evidences demonstrated the aberrant overexpression of Small Nucleolar RNA Host Gene 12 (SNHG12) in diverse human cancer. However, the expression status and involvement of SNHG12 in renal cell carcinoma is still elusive., Methods: The expression of SNHG12 was determined by q-PCR. The transcriptional regulation was interrogated by luciferase reporter assay. Cell viability was measured with CCK-8 kit. The anchorage-independent was evaluated by soft agar assay. Cell apoptosis was analyzed by Annexin V/7-AAD double staining. The migration and invasion were determined by trans-well assay and wound scratch closure. The in vivo tumor growth was monitored in xenograft mice model. Protein expression was quantified by immunoblotting., Results: SNHG12 was aberrantly up-regulated in renal carcinoma both in vivo and in vitro. High expression of SNHG12 associated with poor prognosis. Deficiency of SNHG12 significantly suppressed cell viability, anchorage-independent growth and induced apoptosis. In addition, SNHG12 silencing inhibited migrative and invasive in vitro and xenograft tumor growth in vivo. Mechanistically, SNHG12 modulated HIF1α expression via competing with miR-199a-5p, which consequently contributed to its oncogenic potential. By introduction of K + , Rb + , and Cs + cations into the classical commercial nonlinear optical crystal LiB 3 O 5 (LBO), the series of novel mixed-alkali-metal borates Li 2.6 K 0.4 [B 5 O 8 (OH) 2 ] (K-LBO), Li 2.85 Rb 0.15 [B 5 O 8 (OH) 2 ] (Rb-LBO), and Li 2.9 Cs 0.1 [B 5 O 8 (OH) 2 ] (Cs-LBO) have been obtained under hydrothermal conditions. The steric hindrance effect generated by the introduction of large alkali-metal cations and partial substitution of small Li + cations broke the three-dimensional (3-D) framework of [B 3 O 7 ] 5- borate-oxygen clusters in LBO and resulted in a structure rearrangement to produce infrequent [B 10 O 26 ] 22- 2-D layers. The unique layered structure induced an increase in birefringence in A-LBOs (A = K, Rb, Cs), which is favorable for phase matching during second-harmonic generation. All three compounds are potential deep-ultraviolet nonlinear optical materials, which was proved by UV-vis-NIR diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and second-harmonic-generation measurements.

Background: The non-receptor tyrosine kinase Fyn-related kinase (FRK) has been reported to affect cell proliferation in several cancer types. However, its effect on the proliferation of clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) remains largely unknown., Purpose: The objective of this study was to investigate the expression pattern and function of FRK in ccRCC. We further determined how FRK interacted with other molecules to regulate ccRCC proliferation., Patients and Methods: The expression of FRK in ccRCC samples and paired normal renal tissues from 30 patients were analyzed by immunoblotting, immunohistochemistry and quantitative PCR. Then the role of FRK in ccRCC proliferation was analyzed by Cell Counting Kit-8, colony formation assay and EdU incorporation assay. In addition, the miRNA targeting FRK was predicted through a bioinformatic approach and validated by quantitative PCR, immunoblotting and luciferase reporter assay. Finally, the underlying mechanism of FRK regulation of ccRCC proliferation was also determined., Results: Low expression of FRK was detected in ccRCC samples and predicted poor survival for ccRCC patients. FRK inhibited the proliferation of ccRCC cells via phosphorylating downstream PTEN. miR-19 was identified as a novel suppressor of FRK in renal cancer cells and it promoted the proliferation of ccRCC by inhibiting the FRK-PTEN axis., Conclusion: Our results unravel a new regulatory mechanism involved in ccRCC proliferation and may be useful in the identification of therapeutic targets for ccRCC., Competing Interests: Disclosure The authors report no conflicts of interest in this work.

Background: Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is one of the major types of hereditary retinal dystrophies with extreme genotypic heterogeneity. To date, more than 80 genes have been identified to be associated with RP in human., Method: Here, we presented a clinical genetic study of three Chinese man manifested with night vision blindness and complete loss of midperipheral visual field. All of these three probands have been identified with loss of both central vision and far peripheral visual field. Gradual loss of rod cells followed by subsequent loss of cone cells have been identified in these probands. Targeted next generation sequencing and Sanger sequencing have been performed to understand the pathogenic variants underlying the disease phenotype in these three unrelated Chinese probands., Results: Targeted next generation sequencing and Sanger sequencing identified three homozygous novel mutations (c.1880C>A; c.1459&#95;1460delGA, and c.392G>A) in the MERTK gene in these three unrelated Chinese proband. In the first proband, the identified mutation (c.1880C>A) leads to the formation of a premature stop codon followed by the formation of a truncated mer-tyrosine kinase (MERTK) protein (p.Ser627*) product which predicted to be disease causing. In the second proband, the identified deletion (c.1459&#95;1460delGA) leads to the formation of a frameshift which also finally results in the formation of a truncated MERTK protein (p.Asp487Leufs*57) product which also predicted to be disease causing. In the third proband, the identified mutation (c.392G>A) leads to the formation of a premature stop codon followed by the formation of a truncated MERTK protein (p.Trp131*) product which also predicted to be disease causing. Hence, these three mutations are loss-of-function mutations. These three mutations were absent in unaffected family members and in 100 normal healthy controls., Conclusion: Our present study also demonstrates the significance of targeted next generation sequencing in determining the genetic basis of RP., (© 2019 The Authors. Two crystalline zinc phosphates, formulated as Zn(HPO 4 )(dl-C 5 H 9 NO 2 ) (SCU-3) and Zn(HPO 4 )(C 2 H 5 NO 2 ) (SCU-10), were prepared under surfactant-thermal conditions using amino acids as structure-directing agents. Different from traditional zeolites with 4-connected nets, the two compounds have different 3-connected nets related to zeolite ABW. Powder second-harmonic-generation (SHG) measurement shows that SCU-10 is a nonlinear optically active solid with an SHG efficiency about 1.4 times that of KH 2 PO 4 .

Background: Sub-health status is defined as declines in vitality, physiological function and capacity for adaptation, but without the presence of clinical or sub-clinical disease. We have developed and evaluated a comprehensive questionnaire, the Sub-Health Self-Rating Scale (SSS), to assess sub-health status in university students., Method: The items for the draft questionnaire were discussed in focus groups. The WHOQOL-BREF was selected as the validity reference. From a professional perspective and large sample evaluation, the scale ultimately consisted of 58 items. The reliability and validity of the SSS was examined in undergraduate students and 1000 questionnaires were randomly selected from the samples for expert evaluation., Results: Cronbach's α of the total scale was 0.942. The dimensions of physiological, psychological and social had high reliability: 0.915, 0.856 and 0.850, respectively. Based on scree plot and related theories, there were 10 factors to be extracted. The correlation coefficient between the total scale and sub-scale was high. The dimensions of physiological, psychological and social had high correlations with the total scale: 0.929, 0.803 and 0.774, respectively. The sub-health cut-off point of the total scale was 72; for the physiological field, it was 72; for the psychological field, it was 60; and the social field, it was 56. The fit between the expert evaluation method and the scale method was 0.758. The lower the score, the worse the health condition., Conclusion: We established and evaluated a valid instrument (SSS) that encompasses physiological, psychological and social factors to investigate sub-health status. It is short and easy to complete, and therefore suitable for use with undergraduate students.

The synthesis of ultrafine and well-distributed rhodium nanoparticles (NPs) with high efficiency toward methanolysis of ammonia borane (AB) is crucially important but challenging. A facile approach has been developed for synthesizing ultrafine and uniform Rh NPs deposited on carbon by using the small soluble organic molecule (SOM) of l-proline (PRO) as capping agent (Rh-PRO/C). The enrichment of N,O-coordination sites for the metal precursor by using PRO was found to be the key to the synthesis Rh-PRO/C. The as-prepared Rh-PRO/C showed high catalytic activity for ammonia borane methanolysis with the highest total turnover frequency (TOF) of 1035 mol H 2  (mol Rh  min) -1 under basic conditions, which was three times higher than that of the state-of-the-art Rh-based catalysts. The excellent catalytic performance of Rh-PRO/C was ascribed to the well-dispersed Rh NPs and the PRO-functionalized metal surface, which can provide more active sites for the reaction.
