The polarity of a surface can affect the electronic and structural properties of oxide thin films through electrostatic effects. Understanding the mechanism behind these effects requires knowledge of the atomic structure and electrostatic characteristics at the surface. In this study, we use annular bright-field imaging to investigate the surface structure of a Pr 0.8 Sr 0.2 NiO 2+x (0 < x < 1) film. We observe a polar distortion coupled with octahedral rotations in a fully oxidized Pr 0.8 Sr 0.2 NiO 3 sample, and a stronger polar distortion in a partially reduced sample. Its spatial depth extent is about three unit cells from the surface. Additionally, we use four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy (4D-STEM) to directly image the local atomic electric field surrounding Ni atoms near the surface and discover distinct valence variations of Ni atoms, which are confirmed by atomic-resolution electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). Our results suggest that the strong surface reconstruction in the reduced sample is closely related to the formation of oxygen vacancies from topochemical reduction. The interface polarity plays a vital role in the physical properties of oxide heterointerfaces because it can cause specific modifications of the electronic and atomic structure. Reconstruction due to the strong polarity of the NdNiO 2 /SrTiO 3 interface in recently discovered superconducting nickelate films may play an important role, as no superconductivity has been observed in the bulk. By employing four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy and electron energy-loss spectroscopy, we studied effects of oxygen distribution, polyhedral distortion, elemental intermixing, and dimensionality in NdNiO 2 /SrTiO 3 superlattices grown on SrTiO 3 (001) substrates. Oxygen distribution maps show a gradual variation of the oxygen content in the nickelate layer. Remarkably, we demonstrate thickness-dependent interface reconstruction due to a polar discontinuity. An average cation displacement of ∼0.025 nm at interfaces in 8NdNiO 2 /4SrTiO 3 superlattices is twice larger than that in 4NdNiO 2 /2SrTiO 3 superlattices. Our results provide insights into the understanding of reconstructions at NdNiO 2 /SrTiO 3 polar interfaces.

Interface engineering in complex oxide superlattices is a growing field, enabling manipulation of the exceptional properties of these materials, and also providing access to new phases and emergent physical phenomena. Here we demonstrate how interfacial interactions can induce a complex charge and spin structure in a bulk paramagnetic material. We investigate a superlattice (SLs) consisting of paramagnetic LaNiO 3 (LNO) and highly spin-polarized ferromagnetic La 2/3 Ca 1/3 MnO 3 (LCMO), grown on SrTiO 3 (001) substrate. We observed emerging magnetism in LNO through an exchange bias mechanism at the interfaces in X-ray resonant magnetic reflectivity. We find non-symmetric interface induced magnetization profiles in LNO and LCMO which we relate to a periodic complex charge and spin superstructure. High resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy images reveal that the upper and lower interfaces exhibit no significant structural variations. The different long range magnetic order emerging in LNO layers demonstrates the enormous potential of interfacial reconstruction as a tool for tailored electronic properties., (© 2023. The detection and manipulation of antiferromagnetic domains and topological antiferromagnetic textures are of central interest to solid-state physics. A fundamental step is identifying tools to probe the mesoscopic texture of an antiferromagnetic order parameter. In this work, we demonstrate that Bragg coherent diffractive imaging can be extended to study the mesoscopic texture of an antiferromagnetic order parameter using resonant magnetic x-ray scattering. We study the onset of the antiferromagnet transition in PrNiO 3 , focusing on a temperature regime in which the antiferromagnetic domains are dilute in the beam spot and the coherent diffraction pattern modulating the antiferromagnetic peak is greatly simplified. We demonstrate that it is possible to extract the arrangements and sizes of these domains from single diffraction patterns and show that the approach could be extended to a time-structured light source to study the motion of dilute domains or the motion of topological defects in an antiferromagnetic spin texture.

Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) faults have emerged as a promising candidate for defect engineering in epitaxial ABO 3 perovskites. Functionalities could be fine-tuned by incorporating RP faults into ABO 3 thin films and superlattices. However, due to the lattice expansion at AO-AO interfaces, it is generally believed that RP faults are only energetically favorable under tensile strain. Contrary to this common cognition, here we present that compressive strain must be regarded as an alternative driving force for creating RP faults. Unlike the conventional perovskite-to-rock-salt transition, the RP faults originated from Shockley partial dislocations bounded by stacking faults on the basal plane. The edge-type partials gave rise to strain relaxation, facilitating the formation of RP faults under compressive strain. We envisage that our results will give new insights into the rational design and defect engineering in epitaxial-strained ABO 3 perovskites.

Transition metal oxides exhibit a high potential for application in the field of electronic devices, energy storage, and energy conversion. The ability of building these types of materials by atomic layer-by-layer techniques provides a possibility to design novel systems with favored functionalities. In this study, by means of the atomic layer-by-layer oxide molecular beam epitaxy technique, we designed oxide heterostructures consisting of tetragonal K 2 NiF 4 -type insulating La 2 CuO 4 (LCO) and perovskite-type conductive metallic LaNiO 3 (LNO) layers with different thicknesses to assess the heterostructure-thermoelectric property-relationship at high temperatures. We observed that the transport properties depend on the constituent layer thickness, interface intermixing, and oxygen-exchange dynamics in the LCO layers, which occurs at high temperatures. As the thickness of the individual layers was reduced, the electrical conductivity decreased and the sign of the Seebeck coefficient changed, revealing the contribution of the individual layers where possible interfacial contributions cannot be ruled out. High-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy investigations showed that a substitutional solid solution of La 2 (CuNi)O 4 was formed when the thickness of the constituent layers was decreased.

Resonant x-ray scattering at the Dy M&#95;{5} and Ni L&#95;{3} absorption edges was used to probe the temperature and magnetic field dependence of magnetic order in epitaxial LaNiO&#95;{3}-DyScO&#95;{3} superlattices. For superlattices with 2 unit cell thick LaNiO&#95;{3} layers, a commensurate spiral state develops in the Ni spin system below 100 K. Upon cooling below T&#95;{ind}=18  K, Dy-Ni exchange interactions across the LaNiO&#95;{3}-DyScO&#95;{3} interfaces induce collinear magnetic order of interfacial Dy moments as well as a reorientation of the Ni spins to a direction dictated by the strong magnetocrystalline anisotropy of Dy. This transition is reversible by an external magnetic field of 3 T. Tailored exchange interactions between rare-earth and transition-metal ions thus open up new perspectives for the manipulation of spin structures in metal-oxide heterostructures and devices.

The interplay between charge density waves (CDWs) and high-temperature superconductivity is currently under intense investigation. Experimental research on this issue is difficult because CDW formation in bulk copper oxides is strongly influenced by random disorder, and a long-range-ordered CDW state in high magnetic fields is difficult to access with spectroscopic and diffraction probes. Here we use resonant X-ray scattering in zero magnetic field to show that interfaces with the metallic ferromagnet La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 greatly enhance CDW formation in the optimally doped high-temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O6+δ (δ ∼ 1), and that this effect persists over several tens of nanometres. The wavevector of the incommensurate CDW serves as an internal calibration standard of the charge carrier concentration, which allows us to rule out any significant influence of oxygen non-stoichiometry, and to attribute the observed phenomenon to a genuine electronic proximity effect. Long-range proximity effects induced by heterointerfaces thus offer a powerful method to stabilize the charge-density-wave state in the cuprates and, more generally, to manipulate the interplay between different collective phenomena in metal oxides.

We use polarized Raman scattering to probe lattice vibrations and charge ordering in 12 nm thick, epitaxially strained PrNiO&#95;{3} films, and in superlattices of PrNiO&#95;{3} with the band insulator PrAlO&#95;{3}. A carefully adjusted confocal geometry is used to eliminate the substrate contribution to the Raman spectra. In films and superlattices under tensile strain which undergo a metal-insulator transition upon cooling, the Raman spectra reveal phonon modes characteristic of charge ordering. These anomalous phonons do not appear in compressively strained films, which remain metallic at all temperatures. For superlattices under compressive strain, the Raman spectra show no evidence of anomalous phonons indicative of charge ordering, while complementary resonant x-ray scattering experiments reveal antiferromagnetic order associated with a modest increase in resistivity upon cooling. This confirms theoretical predictions of a spin density wave phase driven by spatial confinement of the conduction electrons.

The electronic phase behavior and functionality of interfaces and surfaces in complex materials are strongly correlated to chemical composition profiles, stoichiometry and intermixing. Here a novel analysis scheme for resonant X-ray reflectivity maps is introduced to determine such profiles, which is element specific and non-destructive, and which exhibits atomic-layer resolution and a probing depth of hundreds of nanometers., (© 2014 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. A combined synchrotron X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy study reveals a structural phase transition controlled by the overall thickness of epitaxial nickelate-aluminate superlattices. We have used resonant x-ray diffraction to develop a detailed description of antiferromagnetic ordering in epitaxial superlattices based on two-unit-cell thick layers of the strongly correlated metal LaNiO3. We also report reference experiments on thin films of PrNiO3 and NdNiO3. The resulting data indicate a spiral state whose polarization plane can be controlled by adjusting the Ni d-orbital occupation via two independent mechanisms: epitaxial strain and spatial confinement of the valence electrons. The data are discussed in light of recent theoretical predictions.

Using neutron reflectometry and resonant x-ray techniques we studied the magnetic proximity effect (MPE) in superlattices composed of superconducting YBa2Cu3O7 and ferromagnetic-metallic La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 or ferromagnetic-insulating LaMnO(3+δ). We find that the MPE strongly depends on the electronic state of the manganite layers, being pronounced for the ferromagnetic-metallic La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 and almost absent for ferromagnetic-insulating LaMnO(3+δ). We also detail the change of the magnetic depth profile due to the MPE and provide evidence for its intrinsic nature.

The competition between collective quantum phases in materials with strongly correlated electrons depends sensitively on the dimensionality of the electron system, which is difficult to control by standard solid-state chemistry. We have fabricated superlattices of the paramagnetic metal lanthanum nickelate (LaNiO(3)) and the wide-gap insulator lanthanum aluminate (LaAlO(3)) with atomically precise layer sequences. We used optical ellipsometry and low-energy muon spin rotation to show that superlattices with LaNiO(3) as thin as two unit cells undergo a sequence of collective metal-insulator and antiferromagnetic transitions as a function of decreasing temperature, whereas samples with thicker LaNiO(3) layers remain metallic and paramagnetic at all temperatures. Metal-oxide superlattices thus allow control of the dimensionality and collective phase behavior of correlated-electron systems.
