Climate physical risk assessment is crucial to inform adaptation policies and finance. However, science-based and transparent solutions to assess climate physical risks are limited, compounding the adaptation gap. This is a main limitation to fill the adaptation gap. We provide a methodology that quantifies physical risks on geolocalized productive assets, considering their exposure to chronic and acute impacts (hurricanes) across the scenarios of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Then, we translate asset-level shocks into economic and financial losses. We apply the methodology to Mexico, a country highly exposed to physical risks, recipient of adaptation finance and foreign investments. We show that investor losses are underestimated up to 70% when neglecting asset-level information, and up to 82% when neglecting tail acute risks. Therefore, neglecting the asset-level and acute dimensions of physical risks leads to large errors in the identification of adaptation policy responses, investments and finance tools aimed to build resilience to climate change., (© 2024. Some metals belonging to groups IV and V show a high permeability to hydrogen and have been studied as possible alternatives to palladium in membranes for hydrogen purification/separation in order to increase their sustainability and decrease their costs. However, to date, very few alloys among those metals have been investigated, and no membrane studies based on 4-5 element alloys with low or zero Pd content and quasi-amorphous structure have been reported so far. In this work, new membranes based on ZrVTi- and ZrVTiPd alloys were tested for the first time for this application. The unprecedented deposition of micrometric-based multilayers was performed via high-power impulse magnetron sputtering onto porous alumina substrates. Dense Pd/Zr x V y Ti z Pd w /Pd multilayers were obtained. The composition of the alloys, morphology and structure, hydrogen permeance, selectivity, and resistance to embrittlement were tested and analyzed depending on the deposition conditions, and the membrane with the enhanced performance was tuned. The environmental impact of these membranes was also investigated to ascertain the sustainability of these alloys relative to more common Pd 77 Ag 23 and V 93 Pd 7 thin-film membranes using a life cycle assessment analysis. The results showed that the partial substitution of Pd can efficiently lead to a decrease in the environmental impacts of the membranes.

Scaffold-type biomaterials are crucial for application in tissue engineering. Among them, the use of a nonwoven scaffold has grown in recent years and has been widely investigated for the regeneration of different types of tissues. Several polymers, whether they are synthetic, biopolymers or both, have been used to produce a scaffold that can mimic the natural tissue to which it will be applied to. The scaffolds used in tissue engineering must be biocompatible and allow cell adhesion and proliferation to be applied in tissue engineering. In addition, the scaffolds should maintain the mechanical properties and architecture of the desired tissue. Nonwoven fabrics have produced good results and are more extensively applied for the regeneration of cartilage, epithelial and bone tissues. Recent advances in tissue engineering have shown promising results, however, no ideal material or standardization parameters and characteristics of the materials were obtained. The present review provides an overview of the application of nonwoven scaffolds, including the main results obtained regarding the properties of the biomaterials and their applications in vitro and in vivo , focusing on the cartilaginous, the epithelium, and bone tissue regeneration.

Network theory proved recently to be useful in the quantification of many properties of financial systems. The analysis of the structure of investment portfolios is a major application since their eventual correlation and overlap impact the actual risk by individual investors. We investigate the bipartite network of US mutual fund portfolios and their assets. We follow its evolution during the Global Financial Crisis and study the diversification, as understood in modern portfolio theory, and the similarity of the investments of different funds. We show that, on average, portfolios have become more diversified and less similar during the crisis. However, we also find that large overlap is far more likely than expected from benchmark models of random allocation of investments. This indicates the existence of strong correlations between fund investment strategies. We exploit a deliberately simplified model of shock propagation to identify a systemic risk component stemming from the similarity of portfolios. The network is still partially vulnerable after the crisis because of this effect, despite the increase in the diversification of multi asset portfolios. Clinical presentation of patients with foreign bodies is highly variable. We received a 55-year-old female patient with fever and right flank pain. She was treated previously for kidney stones by percutaneous nephrolithtomy with partial resolution, requiring renal embolization during this procedure because of bleeding. CT evidenced metallic density images localized in kidney and ureter, associated with kidney stones located in lower calix. Semirigid ureteroscopy and retrograde intrarenal surgery were performed, revealing the presence of foreign bodies in both localizations and lower calix stones. Complete removal of foreign bodies and stones was performed. Creating a map of actors and their leanings is important for policy makers and stakeholders in the European Commission's 'Better Regulation Agenda'. We explore publicly available information about the European lobby organizations from the Transparency Register, and from the open public consultations in the area of Banking and Finance. We consider three complementary types of information about lobbying organizations: (i) their formal categorization in the Transparency Register, (ii) their responses to the public consultations, and (iii) their self-declared goals and activities. We consider responses to the consultations as the most relevant indicator of the actual leaning of an individual lobbyist. We partition and cluster the organizations according to their demonstrated interests and the similarities among their responses. Thus each lobby organization is assigned a profile which shows its prevailing interest in consultations' topics, similar organizations in interests and responses, and a prototypical question and answer. We combine methods from network analysis, clustering, and text mining to obtain these profiles. Due to the non-homogeneous consultations, we find that it is crucial to first construct a response network based on interests in consultations topics, and only then proceed with more detailed analysis of the actual answers to consultations. Over the last decades, both advanced and emerging economies have experienced a striking increase in the intra-financial activity across different asset classes and increasingly complex contract types, leading to a far more complex financial system. Until the 2007-2008 crisis, the increased financial intensity and complexity was believed beneficial in making the financial system more resilient and less vulnerable to shocks. However, in 2007-2008, the advanced economies suffered the biggest financial crisis since the 1930s, followed by a severe post-crisis recession, questioning the adequacy of traditional tools in predicting, explaining, and responding to periods of financial distress. In particular, the effect of complex interconnections among financial actors on financial stability has been widely acknowledged. A recent debate focused on the effects of unconventional policies aimed at achieving both price and financial stability. Among these unconventional policies, Quantitative Easing (QE, i.e., the large-scale asset purchase programme conducted by a central bank upon the creation of new money) has been recently implemented by the European Central Bank (ECB). In this context, two questions deserve more attention in the literature. First, to what extent, the resources provided to the banking system through QE are transmitted to the real economy. Second, to what extent, the QE may also alter the pattern of intra-financial exposures and what are the implications in terms of financial stability. Here, we address these two questions by developing a methodology to map the multilayer macro-network of financial exposures among institutional sectors across financial instruments (i.e., loans and deposits, debt securities, and equity), and we illustrate our approach on recently available data. Thermoelectric application of conjugated polymers has recently become a subject of scientific interest. This is due to the peculiar features of these organic materials, such as low cost, safety, abundance of atomic components, and easy processing, which make them an interesting alternative to inorganic materials commonly used for this application in the room temperature range, i.e., tellurides derivatives, such as Bi₂Te₃ and Sb₂Te₃. Two are the main drawbacks of organic materials employment: the first is their poor thermoelectrical performance, which is still low in comparison with inorganic benchmark, the second is the scarcity of stable and easy-to-dope n-type polymers. In order to address the first issue, we tried to obtain a further and crucial efficiency improvement, developing a nanocomposite embedding inorganic nanoparticles in a matrix of conjugated polymer. A hybrid film of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxithiophene):Tosylate (PEDOT:Tos) and Mn₃O₄ nanoparticles have been achieved through a novel strategy, involving nanoparticle functionalization and in situ polymerization. The purpose is to enable energy filtering thanks to the presence of the NPs so as to extend this beneficial effect already been observed in inorganic semiconductor to polymers. Our study indicates a new path to obtain PEDOT-based nanocomposite and enlightens the peculiar behaviour of this hybrid material.

Nowadays, a big challenge in the thermoelectric field is the identification of efficient thermoelectric materials but inexpensive, easy to synthesize, and comprised of Earth-abundant elements. On this basis, tetrahedrite mineral family (Cu(12−x)Tr(x)Sb₄S₁₃ where Tr = Cu, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Zn) seems to be an attractive p-Type Pb-free thermoelectric material, showing a relatively high conversion efficiency. In this work, a solvothermal synthesis method was developed for undoped tetrahedrite Cu₁₂Sb₄S₁₃ and the introduction of Zn and Ni as substituents of copper was also tested. The influence of the stoichiometry and the synthesis conditions on the tetrahedrite phase content and density of the samples were investigated by X-ray diffraction (with profile Rietveld refinements) and scanning electron microscope (equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy). Preliminary sintering test were performed by Open Die Pressing.

Following the financial crisis of 2007-2008, a deep analogy between the origins of instability in financial systems and complex ecosystems has been pointed out: in both cases, topological features of network structures influence how easily distress can spread within the system. However, in financial network models, the details of how financial institutions interact typically play a decisive role, and a general understanding of precisely how network topology creates instability remains lacking. Here we show how processes that are widely believed to stabilize the financial system, that is, market integration and diversification, can actually drive it towards instability, as they contribute to create cyclical structures which tend to amplify financial distress, thereby undermining systemic stability and making large crises more likely. This result holds irrespective of the details of how institutions interact, showing that policy-relevant analysis of the factors affecting financial stability can be carried out while abstracting away from such details.

The practice of lobbying in the interest of economic or social groups plays an important role in the policy making process of most economies. While no data is available at this stage to examine the success of lobbies in exerting influence on specific policy issues, we perform a first systematic multi-layer network analysis of a large lobby registry. Here we focus on the domains of finance and climate and we combine information on affiliation and client relations from the EU transparency register with information about shareholding and interlocking directorates of firms. We find that the network centrality of lobby organizations has no simple relation with their lobbying budget. Moreover, different layers of the multiplex network provide complementary information to characterize organizations' potential influence. At the aggregate level, it appears that while the domains of finance and climate are separated on the layer of affiliation relations, they become intertwined when economic relations are considered. Because groups of interest differ not only in their budget and network centrality but also in terms of their internal cohesiveness, drawing a map of both connections across and within groups is a precondition to better understand the dynamics of influence on policy making and the forces at play., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

Financial institutions form multilayer networks by engaging in contracts with each other and by holding exposures to common assets. As a result, the default probability of one institution depends on the default probability of all of the other institutions in the network. Here, we show how small errors on the knowledge of the network of contracts can lead to large errors in the probability of systemic defaults. From the point of view of financial regulators, our findings show that the complexity of financial networks may decrease the ability to mitigate systemic risk, and thus it may increase the social cost of financial crises., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Patients with severe skeletal deformities are a challenging group to treat. A female, white, 35-year-old presented with right kidney stones located in renal pelvis, lower calyx, and upper ureter. She was affected by severe spinal deformity with restrictive respiratory obstruction, caused by kyphoscoliosis. Percutaneous nephrolithotomy in supine position was performed, achieving complete removal of kidney stones. The treatment of renal stones in this patient was complex, so special attention to respiratory function was mandatory; this was a challenging but feasible situation.

The DebtRank algorithm has been increasingly investigated as a method to estimate the impact of shocks in financial networks, as it overcomes the limitations of the traditional default-cascade approaches. Here we formulate a dynamical "microscopic" theory of instability for financial networks by iterating balance sheet identities of individual banks and by assuming a simple rule for the transfer of shocks from borrowers to lenders. By doing so, we generalise the DebtRank formulation, both providing an interpretation of the effective dynamics in terms of basic accounting principles and preventing the underestimation of losses on certain network topologies. Depending on the structure of the interbank leverage matrix the dynamics is either stable, in which case the asymptotic state can be computed analytically, or unstable, meaning that at least one bank will default. We apply this framework to a dataset of the top listed European banks in the period 2008-2013. We find that network effects can generate an amplification of exogenous shocks of a factor ranging between three (in normal periods) and six (during the crisis) when we stress the system with a 0.5% shock on external (i.e. non-interbank) assets for all banks.

Credit Default Swaps (CDS) spreads should reflect default risk of the underlying corporate debt. Actually, it has been recognized that CDS spread time series did not anticipate but only followed the increasing risk of default before the financial crisis. In principle, the network of correlations among CDS spread time series could at least display some form of structural change to be used as an early warning of systemic risk. Here we study a set of 176 CDS time series of financial institutions from 2002 to 2011. Networks are constructed in various ways, some of which display structural change at the onset of the credit crisis of 2008, but never before. By taking these networks as a proxy of interdependencies among financial institutions, we run stress-test based on Group DebtRank. Systemic risk before 2008 increases only when incorporating a macroeconomic indicator reflecting the potential losses of financial assets associated with house prices in the US. This approach indicates a promising way to detect systemic instabilities.

We investigate the community structure of the global ownership network of transnational corporations. We find a pronounced organization in communities that cannot be explained by randomness. Despite the global character of this network, communities reflect first of all the geographical location of firms, while the industrial sector plays only a marginal role. We also analyze the meta-network in which the nodes are the communities and the links are obtained by aggregating the links among firms belonging to pairs of communities. We analyze the network centrality of the top 50 communities and we provide a quantitative assessment of the financial sector role in connecting the global economy.

The recent crisis has brought to the fore a crucial question that remains still open: what would be the optimal architecture of financial systems? We investigate the stability of several benchmark topologies in a simple default cascading dynamics in bank networks. We analyze the interplay of several crucial drivers, i.e., network topology, banks' capital ratios, market illiquidity, and random vs targeted shocks. We find that, in general, topology matters only--but substantially--when the market is illiquid. No single topology is always superior to others. In particular, scale-free networks can be both more robust and more fragile than homogeneous architectures. This finding has important policy implications. We also apply our methodology to a comprehensive dataset of an interbank market from 1999 to 2011.

With the aim of preparing stable nanofluids for heat exchange applications and to study the effect of surfactant on the aggregation of nanoparticles and thermal diffusivity, stable silver colloids were synthesized in water by a green method, reducing AgNO₃ with fructose in the presence of poly-vinylpyrollidone (PVP) of various molecular weights. A silver nanopowder was precipitated from the colloids and re-dispersed at 4 vol% in deionized water. The Ag colloids were characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, combined dynamic light scattering and ζ-potential measurements, and laser flash thermal diffusivity. The Ag nanopowders were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and thermal gravimetric analysis. It was found that the molecular weight of PVP strongly affects the ζ-potential and the aggregation of nanoparticles, thereby affecting the thermal diffusivity of the obtained colloids. In particular, it was observed that on increasing the molecular weight of PVP the absolute value of the ζ-potential is reduced, leading to increased aggregation of nanoparticles. A clear relation was identified between thermal diffusivity and aggregation, showing higher thermal diffusivity for nanofluids having higher aggregation. A maximum improvement of thermal diffusivity by about 12% was found for nanofluids prepared with PVP having higher molecular weight.

We analyse time series of CDS spreads for a set of major US and European institutions in a period overlapping the recent financial crisis. We extend the existing methodology of ε-drawdowns to the one of joint ε-drawups, in order to estimate the conditional probabilities of spike-like co-movements among pairs of spreads. After correcting for randomness and finite size effects, we find that, depending on the period of time, 50% of the pairs or more exhibit high probabilities of joint drawups and the majority of spread series are trend-reinforced, i.e. drawups tend to be followed by drawups in the same series. We then carry out a network analysis by taking the probability of joint drawups as a proxy of financial dependencies among institutions. We introduce two novel centrality-like measures that offer insights on how both the systemic impact of each node as well as its vulnerability to other nodes' shocks evolve in time.

The Statistical Physics of Complex Networks has recently provided new theoretical tools for policy makers. Here we extend the notion of network controllability to detect the financial institutions, i.e. the drivers, that are most crucial to the functioning of an interbank market. The system we investigate is a paradigmatic case study for complex networks since it undergoes dramatic structural changes over time and links among nodes can be observed at several time scales. We find a scale-free decay of the fraction of drivers with increasing time resolution, implying that policies have to be adjusted to the time scales in order to be effective. Moreover, drivers are often not the most highly connected "hub" institutions, nor the largest lenders, contrary to the results of other studies. Our findings contribute quantitative indicators which can support regulators in developing more effective supervision and intervention policies.

A sensitive and fast-responding membrane-free amperometric gas sensor is described, consisting of a small filter paper foil soaked with a room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL), upon which three electrodes are screen printed with carbon ink, using a suitable mask. It takes advantage of the high electrical conductivity and negligible vapour pressure of RTILs as well as their easy immobilization into a porous and inexpensive supporting material such as paper. Moreover, thanks to a careful control of the preparation procedure, a very close contact between the RTIL and electrode material can be achieved so as to allow gaseous analytes to undergo charge transfer just as soon as they reach the three-phase sites where the electrode material, paper supported RTIL and gas phase meet. Thus, the adverse effect on recorded currents of slow steps such as analyte diffusion and dissolution in a solvent is avoided. To evaluate the performance of this device, it was used as a wall-jet amperometric detector for flow injection analysis of 1-butanethiol vapours, adopted as the model gaseous analyte, present in headspace samples in equilibrium with aqueous solutions at controlled concentrations. With this purpose, the RTIL soaked paper electrochemical detector (RTIL-PED) was assembled by using 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide as the wicking RTIL and printing the working electrode with carbon ink doped with cobalt(II) phthalocyanine, to profit from its ability to electrocatalyze thiol oxidation. The results obtained were quite satisfactory (detection limit: 0.5 μM; dynamic range: 2-200 μM, both referring to solution concentrations; correlation coefficient: 0.998; repeatability: ±7% RSD; long-term stability: 9%), thus suggesting the possible use of this device for manifold applications.

Systemic risk, here meant as the risk of default of a large portion of the financial system, depends on the network of financial exposures among institutions. However, there is no widely accepted methodology to determine the systemically important nodes in a network. To fill this gap, we introduce, DebtRank, a novel measure of systemic impact inspired by feedback-centrality. As an application, we analyse a new and unique dataset on the USD 1.2 trillion FED emergency loans program to global financial institutions during 2008-2010. We find that a group of 22 institutions, which received most of the funds, form a strongly connected graph where each of the nodes becomes systemically important at the peak of the crisis. Moreover, a systemic default could have been triggered even by small dispersed shocks. The results suggest that the debate on too-big-to-fail institutions should include the even more serious issue of too-central-to-fail.

We live in a computerized and networked society where many of our actions leave a digital trace and affect other people's actions. This has lead to the emergence of a new data-driven research field: mathematical methods of computer science, statistical physics and sociometry provide insights on a wide range of disciplines ranging from social science to human mobility. A recent important discovery is that search engine traffic (i.e., the number of requests submitted by users to search engines on the www) can be used to track and, in some cases, to anticipate the dynamics of social phenomena. Successful examples include unemployment levels, car and home sales, and epidemics spreading. Few recent works applied this approach to stock prices and market sentiment. However, it remains unclear if trends in financial markets can be anticipated by the collective wisdom of on-line users on the web. Here we show that daily trading volumes of stocks traded in NASDAQ-100 are correlated with daily volumes of queries related to the same stocks. In particular, query volumes anticipate in many cases peaks of trading by one day or more. Our analysis is carried out on a unique dataset of queries, submitted to an important web search engine, which enable us to investigate also the user behavior. We show that the query volume dynamics emerges from the collective but seemingly uncoordinated activity of many users. These findings contribute to the debate on the identification of early warnings of financial systemic risk, based on the activity of users of the www.

Nanostructured, high quality and large area Al-doped ZnO (ZnO:Al) thin films were obtained by radiofrequency (RF) magnetron sputtering. The sample rotation during deposition has resulted in excellent spatial distribution of thickness and electro-optical properties compared to that obtained under static conditions. ZnO:Al thin films are employed in a large number of devices, including thin film solar cells, where the uniformity of the properties is a key factor for a possible up-scaling of the research results to industrially relevant substrate sizes. A chemical post etching treatment was employed achieving tunable surface nanotextures to generate light scattering at the desired wavelength for improved cell efficiency. Since the film resistivity is only slightly increased by the etching, this post-deposition step allows separating the optimization of electro-optical properties from light scattering behavior. The thin films were characterized by FE-SEM, XRD, UV-VIS spectroscopy, four probe and van der Paw techniques.

The structure of the control network of transnational corporations affects global market competition and financial stability. So far, only small national samples were studied and there was no appropriate methodology to assess control globally. We present the first investigation of the architecture of the international ownership network, along with the computation of the control held by each global player. We find that transnational corporations form a giant bow-tie structure and that a large portion of control flows to a small tightly-knit core of financial institutions. This core can be seen as an economic "super-entity" that raises new important issues both for researchers and policy makers.

Room-temperature results of cathodoluminescence (CL) spectroscopy investigations are presented for nanostructured titanium dioxide (anatase) thin films (500 nm thick) deposited via RF magnetron sputtering on high-purity silica substrates. The collected CL bands of the anatase thin films, as deposited and after different annealing cycles, showed a broad morphology consisting of three Voigtian bands located at 500, 550, and 610 nm that were partially overlapping. The overall CL emission increased with increasing temperature and time of the annealing cycle as a consequence of the increased crystallinity of the thin film. A clear trend was found for the oxygen-vacancy-related band (located at 610 nm), whose relative intensity decreased, as compared with the as-grown sample, after annealing in air; the higher the annealing temperature, the lower the relative intensity. We evaluated the photoactivity of the nanostructured thin film samples by measuring their photocatalytic activity in aqueous solution toward the degradation of phenol. A relationship between the decrease in oxygen vacancy concentration as a consequence of the annealing and the increase in the photoactivity was highlighted.

We present a methodology to extract the backbone of complex networks based on the weight and direction of links, as well as on nontopological properties of nodes. We show how the methodology can be applied in general to networks in which mass or energy is flowing along the links. In particular, the procedure enables us to address important questions in economics, namely, how control and wealth are structured and concentrated across national markets. We report on the first cross-country investigation of ownership networks, focusing on the stock markets of 48 countries around the world. On the one hand, our analysis confirms results expected on the basis of the literature on corporate control, namely, that in Anglo-Saxon countries control tends to be dispersed among numerous shareholders. On the other hand, it also reveals that in the same countries, control is found to be highly concentrated at the global level, namely, lying in the hands of very few important shareholders. Interestingly, the exact opposite is observed for European countries. These results have previously not been reported as they are not observable without the kind of network analysis developed here.

Rats explore their surroundings through rhythmic movement of their mystacial vibrissae. At any given moment, multiple whiskers are simultaneously moved and may contact the surface of an object. The aim of this work is to understand how simultaneous multiple-whisker deflections are processed in the somatosensory cortex. Arrays of 25 electrodes were inserted into the vibrissal representation of barrel cortex of adult rats. Multi-unit responses were recorded during (i) stimulation of single whiskers, and (ii) simultaneous stimulation of two, three or four whiskers of a whisker arc or whisker row. The whole-array response elicited by the simultaneous stimulation of multiple-whiskers (observed response) was compared to a multiple-whisker response predictor, defined as the sum of the whole-array responses to the separate stimulation of the corresponding single whiskers. The observed response to stimulation of four whiskers was nearly always less than the predicted response, indicating a sublinear summation of multiple coincident inputs. Examining the poststimulus time course of sublinearity, we found that the earliest cortical response to whisker deflection - reflecting the thalamocortical volley - was linear, whereas the successive cortical response was highly sublinear. This suggests a cortical origin of the phenomenon.

In this report, the input/output relations in an isolated ganglion of the leech Hirudo medicinalis were studied by simultaneously using six or eight suction pipettes and two intracellular electrodes. Sensory input was mimicked by eliciting action potentials in mechanosensory neurons with intracellular electrodes. The integrated neural output was measured by recording extracellular voltage signals with pipettes sucking the roots and the connectives. A single evoked action potential activated electrical activity in at least a dozen different neurons, some of which were identified. This electrical activity was characterized by a high degree of temporal and spatial variability. The action potentials of coactivated neurons, i.e. activated by the same mechanosensory neuron, did not show any significant pairwise correlation. Indeed, the analysis of evoked action potentials indicates clear statistical independence among coactivated neurons, presumably originating from the independence of synaptic transmission at distinct synapses. This statistical independence may be used to increase reliability when neuronal activity is averaged or pooled. It is suggested that statistical independence among coactivated neurons may be a usual property of distributed processing of neuronal networks and a basic feature of neural computation.

This paper introduces improved techniques for multichannel extracellular electrophysiological recordings of neurons distributed across a single layer of topographically mapped cortex. We describe the electrode array, the surgical implant techniques, and the procedures for data collection and analysis. Neural events are acquired through an array of 25 or 100 microelectrodes with a 400-microm inter-electrode spacing. One advantage of the new methodology is that implantation is achieved through transdural penetration, thereby reducing the disruption of the cortical tissue. The overall cortical territory sampled by the 25-electrode array is 1.6 x 1.6 mm (2.56 mm2) and by the 100-electrode array 3.6 x 3.6 mm (12.96 mm2). Using a recording system with 100 channels available, neural activity is simultaneously acquired on all electrodes, amplified, digitized, and stored on computer. In our data, average peak-to-peak signal/noise ratio was 11.5 and off-line waveform analysis typically allowed the separation of at least one well-discriminated single-unit per channel. The reported technique permits analysis of cortical function with high temporal and spatial resolution. We use the technique to create an 'image' of neural activity distributed across the whisker representation of rat somatosensory (barrel) cortex.

It has been recently shown that NGF is not only involved in the survival and development of sympathetic and neural crest-derived sensory neurons, but also in some mechanisms of the immune system. For this reason, we studied the content of NGF in CSF samples from patients with diseases in which neuroimmunological mechanisms seem to be involved (multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Alzheimer disease, chronic relapsing polyradiculoneuritis, Guillain-Barré syndrome, and tumors of the nervous system), as well as from a number of normal control subjects. We setup an ELISA aimed at the beta subunit of NGF, obtaining good validation tests and a detection limit of 28 pg beta NGF per ml. None of the samples was found to contain detectable levels of NGF and, when a concentration method for sample enrichment was used, only one patient was NGF-positive. This suggests that NGF is probably not involved in the neuroimmunological mechanisms underlying some inflammatory and degenerative diseases of the nervous system.

Ten mouse hybridoma lines producing monoclonal antibodies (Mabs) against recombinant human ciliary neurotrophic factor (rhCNTF) have been obtained. Two monoclonal antibodies belonging to the IgG1 class were selected and characterized. Their specificity was established by ELISA and Western blotting. Epitopes recognized by the two Mabs were investigated with ELISA and Western blotting by using rhCNTF mutants, rhCNTF fragments and synthetic peptides mimicking different portions of the CNTF molecule. The carboxy-terminal part of the CNTF and particularly the sequence between aa 150 and 159 appeared to constitute the immunodominant group. The fact that certain amino acid sequences of CNTF are conserved among species was utilized to examine the crossreactivity patterns of the two Mabs with rat sciatic nerve CNTF by Western blotting and immunohistochemistry. These antibodies will be useful for studying the distribution of CNTF in the nervous system and in developing an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for the quantitative determinations of CNTF in various neuropathologies.
