Identification of Traumatic axonal injury (TAI) is critical in clinical practice, particularly in terms of long-term prognosis, but also for medico-legal issues, to verify whether the death or the after-effects were attributable to trauma. Multidisciplinary approaches are an undeniable asset when it comes to solving these problems. The aim of this work is therefore to list the different techniques needed to identify axonal lesions and to understand the lesion mechanisms involved in their formation. Imaging can be used to assess the consequences of trauma, to identify indirect signs of TAI, to explain the patient's initial symptoms and even to assess the patient's prognosis. Three-dimensional reconstructions of the skull can highlight fractures suggestive of trauma. Microscopic and immunohistochemical techniques are currently considered as the most reliable tools for the early identification of TAI following trauma. Finite element models use mechanical equations to predict biomechanical parameters, such as tissue stresses and strains in the brain, when subjected to external forces, such as violent impacts to the head. These parameters, which are difficult to measure experimentally, are then used to predict the risk of injury. The integration of imaging data with finite element models allows researchers to create realistic and personalized computational models by incorporating actual geometry and properties obtained from imaging techniques. Background: Treatment with recombinant human erythropoietin (rHu-EPO) modestly prevented packed red blood cell transfusions (pRBCTs) in preterm infants in studies performed several years ago. In France, some neonatal units stopped using rHu-EPO, while others continued. The aim of this study was to explore the role of rHu-EPO in the prevention of pRBCTs in a recent cohort of preterm infants., Materials and Methods: Preterm infants who met rHu-EPO indications and were hospitalised between 2018 and 2020 in two neonatal units -one that did not use rHu-EPO and another that did- were eligible. Data about the neonatal history, rHu-EPO and iron treatments and pRBCT indications and volumes were collected. Infants exposed and not exposed to rHu-EPO were compared in univariate and multivariate analyses using backward logistic regression and Cox proportional hazards regression., Results: A total of 257 patients exposed to rHu-EPO and 285 patients who were not exposed were included. Three profiles emerged. In the infants with a gestational age <28 weeks, the cumulative pRBCT volume/kg was similar regardless of rHu-EPO exposure (mean difference -2.8 mL, 95% confidence interval -16.1, 10.5, p=0.68). In the infants born between 28 and 30 weeks, a late pRBCT was prevented in the rHu-EPO group (single pRBCT: no rHu-EPO 22.1% vs rHu-EPO 8%, p=0.003). However, rHu-EPO was not independently associated with avoidance of this pRBCT. Finally, the need for pRBCT was low in the infants born after 30 weeks of gestation, making rHu-EPO treatment futile. In contrast, early iron supplementation was revealed to be critical in preventing pRBCT., Discussion: No benefit of rHu-EPO in preventing pRBCT was observed in our cohort. The place of rHu-EPO in future requires careful consideration of the population concerned, adjustment of the therapeutic schedule and evolution of the indications for pRBCT.

Objectives: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that, so far, is considered always fatal. Treatments mainly consist in increasing survival and aim to improve the quality of life of people with ALS (pwALS). Social support and spirituality have been shown to play a key role in pwALS' quality of life. Our study explored it in depth by investigating the underlying mechanisms linking social support, spirituality, and emotional well-being., Methods: Thirty-six pwALS underwent a battery of tests evaluating emotional well-being (emotional well-being scale of the 40-item Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Assessment Questionnaire), social support (6-item Social Support Questionnaire), and spiritual well-being (12-item Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy - Spiritual well-being). Our recruitment was web-based through the FILSLAN and the ARSLA websites as well as through Facebook® advertisements (ALS groups). Data were analyzed by Pearson correlation analysis and Process macro was used in an SPSS program to analyze the mediator variable effect., Results: Availability of social support, spiritual well-being, and 2 of its dimensions, i.e., meaning and peace, were positively correlated with emotional well-being. The mediational analyses showed that spiritual well-being, meaning, and peace act as mediators in the association between availability of social support and good emotional well-being., Significance of Results: Availability of social support and spirituality are essential for the emotional well-being of pwALS. Spirituality as a mediator between availability of social support and emotional well-being appears as real novel finding which could be explored further. Spiritual well-being, meaning, and peace appear as coping resources for pwALS. We provide practical guidance for professionals working with pwALS.

Purpose: The occurrence of an iatrogenic vertebral fracture during non-spinal digestive surgery is an exceptional event that has not been previously documented. Our study aims to explain the occurrence of this fracture from a biomechanical perspective, given its rarity. Using a finite element model of the spine, we will evaluate the strength required to induce a vertebral fracture through a hyperextension mechanism, considering the structure of the patient's spine, whether it is ossified or healthy., Methods: A 70-year-old patient was diagnosed T12 fracture during a liver transplantation on ankylosed spine. We use a finite element model of the spine. Different mechanical properties were applied to the spine model: first to a healthy spine, the second to a osteoporotic ossified spine. The displacement and force imposed at the Sacrum, the time and location of fractures initiation were recorded and compared between the two spine conditions., Results: A surgical treatment is done associating decompression with posterior fixation. After biomechanical study, we found that the fracture initiation occurred for the ossified spine after a sacrum displacement of 29 mm corresponding to an applied force of 65 N. For the healthy spine it occurred at a sacrum displacement of 52 mm corresponding to an applied force of 350 N., Conclusion: The force required to produce a type B fracture in an ankylosed spine is 5 times less than in a healthy spine. Maintaining the well-being of the older adults is a primary concern in gerontology. This study determined different profiles of well-being (WB) and compared the profiles in terms of successful aging (SA), personality, and sociodemographic variables. The study sample consisted of 856 adults aged 65-98 years. WB was taken into account in an eudemonic and hedonic approach. SA was measured by assessing the three distinct components of Rowe and Kahn's model (Successful aging. Gerontol 37(4):433-440. 10.1093/geront/37.4.433, 1997), personality by the Big Five Inventory, and sociodemographic variables. Latent class analyses (LCA) determined the number of WB profiles, and ANOVAs and Chi2 tests to compare them. The LCA revealed three WB profiles: Profile 1 (9.35%, n = 80), Profile 2 (37.38%, n = 320), and Profile 3 (53.27%, n = 456) in which participants reported lower, intermediate, and higher WB scores. Our results confirm that a high level of WB (Profile 3) can be linked to the components of SA and socio-demographic characteristics (age, marital status, level of education, income). This raises questions about the injunctions concerning healthy aging that older people integrate. It's also interesting to note that the intermediate profile (profile 2) can be either close to the "lower WB" profile (Profile 1) in terms of openness, conscientiousness, and agreeableness or to the "higher WB" profile (Profile 3) in terms of extraversion. However the three profiles do not have the same level of neuroticism. Finite element modeling provides a digital representation of the human body. It is currently the most pertinent method to study the mechanisms of head injury, and is becoming a scientific reference in forensic expert reports. Improved biofidelity is a recurrent aim of research studies in biomechanics in order to improve earlier models whose mechanical properties conformed to simplified elastic behavior and mechanic laws. We aimed to study force transmission to the brain following impacts to the head, using a finite element head model with increased biofidelity. To the model developed by the Laboratory of Applied Biomechanics of Marseille, we added new brain structures (thalamus, central gray nuclei and ventricular systems) as well as three tracts involved in the symptoms of head injury: the corpus callosum, uncinate tracts and corticospinal tracts. Three head impact scenarios were simulated: an uppercut with the prior model and an uppercut with the improved model in order to compare the two models, and a lateral impact with an impact velocity of 6.5 m/s in the improved model. In these conditions, in uppercuts the maximum stress values did not exceed the injury risk threshold. On the other hand, the deep gray matter (thalamus and central gray nuclei) was the region at highest risk of injury during lateral impacts. Objective: Although research on equine-assisted intervention (EAI) for older adults is beginning to be published, no scientific study has examined the various elements that can limit or facilitate the implementation of EAI with older adults suffering from Alzheimer's disease (AD) residing in nursing homes. The aim of this study was to identify the possible brakes and levers of implementing EAI with AD patients. A focus on professional affiliation was conducted., Method: The survey was posted online on 2 February 2021 via the Sphinx software. As this study was aimed at gerontology professionals working in nursing homes, they were contacted through various specialized social networks. A total of 663 people answered the survey., Results: The results indicate that for 45% of the participants, the main brake to implementing EAI is related to the institutional burden. As for the levers, 29% of the people indicated that it would mainly be beneficial due to the cognitive stimulation that EAI would provide. People who were not familiar with EAI reported more brakes to its implementation. Finally, it was observed that the caregivers were those who put forward the most levers for the implementation of EAI with AD patients living in nursing homes., Conclusion: Thus, this study allows us to understand some of the reasons why nursing homes are reluctant to set up EAI. Several recombinant proteins have been successfully produced in plants. This usually requires Agrobacterium -mediated cell transformation to deliver the T-DNA into the nucleus of plant cells. However, some genetic instability may threaten the integrity of the expression cassette during its delivery via A. tumefaciens , especially when the protein of interest is toxic to the bacteria. E-scooters as a mode of transportation is rapidly growing in popularity. This study evaluates head impact conditions and injury risk associated with E-scooter crashes. A multibody model of E-scooter falls induced by wheel-curb collision was built and compared with an experimental E-scooter crash test. A total of 162 crash scenarios were simulated to assess the effect of fall conditions (E-scooter initial speed and inclination, obstacle orientation, and user size) on the head impact kinematics. The forehead hit the ground first in 44% of simulations. The average tangential and normal impact speeds were 3.5 m/s and 4.8 m/s respectively. Nearly 100% of simulations identified a risk of concussion (linear acceleration peak >82 g and rotational acceleration peak >6383 rad/s 2 ) and 90% of simulations suggested a risk of severe head injuries (HIC>700). DNA and Histone 3 Lysine 27 methylation typically function as repressive modifications and operate within distinct genomic compartments. In mammals, the majority of the genome is kept in a DNA methylated state, whereas the Polycomb repressive complexes regulate the unmethylated CpG-rich promoters of developmental genes. In contrast to this general framework, the extra-embryonic lineages display non-canonical, globally intermediate DNA methylation levels, including disruption of local Polycomb domains. Here, to better understand this unusual landscape's molecular properties, we genetically and chemically perturbed major epigenetic pathways in mouse trophoblast stem cells. We find that the extra-embryonic epigenome reflects ongoing and dynamic de novo methyltransferase recruitment, which is continuously antagonized by Polycomb to maintain intermediate, locally disordered methylation. Despite its disorganized molecular appearance, our data point to a highly controlled equilibrium between counteracting repressors within extra-embryonic cells, one that can seemingly persist indefinitely without bistable features typically seen for embryonic forms of epigenetic regulation., (© 2023. Objective: Head injuries are common injuries in E-scooter accidents which have dramatically increased in recent years. The head impact conditions and helmet performance during E-scooter accidents are barely investigated. This study aims to characterize the head-ground impact biomechanics and evaluate bicycle helmet protection in typical E-scooter falls., Method: The finite element (FE) model of a hybrid III dummy riding an E-scooter was developed and validated. The FE model with and without a bicycle helmet was used to reproduce twenty-seven E-scooter falls caused by the collision with a curb, in which different riding speeds (10, 20, and 30 km/h), curb orientations (30, 60, and 90°), and E-scooter orientations (-15, 0, and 15°) were simulated. Head-ground impact velocities and locations were evaluated for the unhelmeted configurations while the helmet performance was evaluated with the reduction of head injury metrics., Results: E-scooter falls always resulted in an oblique head-ground impact, with 78 % on the forehead. The mean vertical and tangential head-ground impact velocities were respectively 5.7 ± 1.5 m/s and 3.7 ± 2.0 m/s. The helmet significantly (p < 0.1) reduced the head linear acceleration, angular velocity, HIC&#95;36, and BrIC, but not the angular acceleration. However, even with the helmet, the head injury metrics were mostly above the thresholds of severe head injuries., Conclusion: Typical E-scooter falls might cause severe head injuries. The bicycle helmet was efficient to reduce head injury metrics but not to prevent severe head injuries. To prevent spinal and back injuries in snowboarding, back protector devices (BPDs) have been increasingly used. The biomechanical knowledge for the BPD design and evaluation remains to be explored in snowboarding accident conditions. This study aims to evaluate back-to-snow impact conditions and the associated back injury mechanisms in typical snowboarding backward falls. A previously validated snowboarder multi-body model was first used to evaluate the impact zones on the back and the corresponding impact velocities in a total of 324 snowboarding backward falls. The biomechanical responses during back-to-snow impacts were then evaluated by applying the back-to-snow impact velocity to a full human body finite element model to fall on the snow ground of three levels of stiffness (soft, hard, and icy snow). The mean values of back-to-snow normal and tangential impact velocities were 2.4 m/s and 7.3 m/s with maximum values up to 4.8 m/s and 18.5 m/s. The lower spine had the highest normal impact velocity during snowboarding backward falls. The thoracic spine was found more likely to exceed the limits of flexion-extension range of motions than the lumbar spine during back-to-snow impacts, indicating a higher injury risk. On the hard and icy snow, rib cage and vertebral fractures were predicted at the costal cartilage and the posterior elements of the vertebrae. Despite the possible back injuries, the back-to-snow impact force was always lower than the force thresholds of the current BPD testing standard. Purpose: Each summer, many vacationers enjoy the Mediterranean Sea shores. Among the recreational nautical activities, motorboat cruise is a popular choice that leads to a significant number of thoracolumbar spine fractures at our clinic. This phenomenon seems to be underreported, and its injury mechanism remains unclear. Here, we aim to describe the fracture pattern and propose a possible mechanism of injury., Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical, radiological, and contextual parameters of all motorboat-related spinal fracture cases during a 14-year period (2006-2020) in three French neurosurgical level I centers bordering the Mediterranean Sea. Fractures were classified according to the AOSpine thoracolumbar classification system., Results: A total of 79 patients presented 90 fractures altogether. Women presented more commonly than men (61/18). Most of the lesions occurred at the thoracolumbar transition region between T10 and L2 (88.9% of the levels fractured). Compression A type fractures were seen in all cases (100%). Only one case of posterior spinal element injury was observed. The occurrence of neurological deficit was rare (7.6%). The most commonly encountered context was a patient sitting at the boat's bow, without anticipating the trauma, when the ship's bow suddenly elevated while crossing another wave, resulting in a "deck-slap" mechanism hitting and propelling the patient in the air., Conclusions: Thoracolumbar compression fractures are a frequent finding in nautical tourism. Passengers seated at the boat's bow are the typical victims. Some specific biomechanical patterns are involved with the boat's deck suddenly elevating across the waves. More data with biomechanical studies are necessary to understand the phenomenon. Prevention and safety recommendations should be given before motorboat use to fight against these avoidable fractures.

The application of interventions to enhance mobility in ecological settings remain understudied. This study was developed to evaluate the feasibility of training methods in a community centre and to evaluate their impact on mobility outcomes. Fifty-four participants were randomized to one of three 12-week training programs (three times/week): aerobic (AE), gross motor abilities (GMA) or cognitive (COG). Feasibility was evaluated by calculating adherence, feedback from participants and long-term participation. The impact of these interventions on mobility was assessed by comparing pre- and post-program on Timed-up-and-go (TUG) and spontaneous walking speed (SWS) performances. Results showed relatively high rates of adherence (85.1%) and long-term participation (66.7%), along with favorable feedbacks. SWS significantly improved in COG (0.10 ± 0.11 m.s -1 ; p = 0.004) and AE (0.06 ± 0.11 m.s -1 ; p = 0.017) groups, and TUG performance was maintained in all groups. Results of this feasibility study demonstrated successful implementation of physical and cognitive training programs, encouraging the development of real-world applications.

Objective: Equine-assisted interventions (EAI) can improve a variety of health problems in older adults and thus promote their well-being. This systematic review aimed to synthesize studies on EAI to understand better their effects on the health of older adults., Method: A systematic search guided by the PRISMA 2020 approach was performed on specific databases: Medline (PubMed), EMBASE, PsycINFO, and Cochrane Library. Peer-reviewed articles published in the English language from inception to June 2022 were retrieved. Methodological quality was established using the modified version of the Downs and Black checklist., Results: A total of 244 studies were retrieved, and 13 eligible studies were finally included. Three health domains were investigated: physical (balance, gait, and muscular strength), psychological (quality of life and cognitive assessment), and physiological (hormonal measures, cerebral and muscular activity). Among the eight studies investigating the physical dimension, four studies highlighted a positive effect of EAI on balance, four for gait, and three for strength. Regarding the three studies investigating the psychological dimension, two studies showed a positive effect of EAI on quality of life. Lastly, the four studies investigating the physiological dimensions all demonstrated a positive effect of EAI on hormonal measures and cerebral and muscular activity., Conclusion: Nevertheless, this systematic review provides promising findings regarding the positive effects of EAI on physical, psychological, and physiological health in older adults. In 1925, 5-methylcytosine was first reported in bacteria. However, its biological importance was not intuitive for several decades. After this initial lag, the ubiquitous presence of this methylated base emerged across all domains of life and revealed a range of essential biological functions. Today, we are armed with the knowledge of the key factors that establish, maintain, and remove DNA methylation and have access to a staggering and rapidly growing number of base-resolution methylation maps. Despite this, several fundamental details about the precise role and interpretation of DNA methylation patterns remain under investigation. Frailty is a complex geriatric syndrome with multifactorial associated mechanisms that need to be examined more deeply to help reverse the adverse health-related outcomes. Specific inflammatory and physical health markers have been associated with the onset of frailty, but the associations between these factors and psycho-social health outcomes seem less studied. This systematic review aimed to identify, in the same study design, the potential associations between frailty and markers of inflammation, and physical or psycho-social health. A literature search was performed from inception until March 2021 using Medline, Psycinfo, and EMBASE. Three raters evaluated the articles and selected 22 studies, using inclusion and exclusion criteria ( n = 17,373; 91.6% from community-dwelling samples). Regarding biomarkers, 95% of the included studies showed significant links between inflammation [especially the higher levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and interleukin-6 (IL-6)], and frailty status. Approximately 86% of the included studies showed strong links between physical health decline (such as lower levels of hemoglobin, presence of comorbidities, or lower physical performance), and frailty status. At most, 13 studies among the 22 included ones evaluated psycho-social variables and mixed results were observed regarding the relationships with frailty. Results are discussed in terms of questioning the medical perception of global health, centering mostly on the physical dimension. Objective: The term 'culinary dependence' denotes a situation in which someone delegates all or part of their daily meal-related activities to a third party. The present study aimed to explore nutritional risk among older people (≥65 years) with culinary dependence., Method: The first survey included 559 people either living at home without help, with help unrelated to food activities, with help related to food activities or living in nursing home. The second survey included 319 people with food help provided by a caregiver, by meals-on-wheels or by a nursing home. Nutritional status was assessed with the Mini-Nutritional Assessment. Sociological background and wellness variables (health, cognitive and mental status) were collected., Results: The first survey found a strong association between culinary dependence and nutritional risk. About half of the people who delegated their food-related activities were malnourished or at risk of malnutrition compared with only 4% for people with no help and 12% for people with help unrelated to food activity. According to the second survey, this prevalence varied slightly depending on who the tasks were delegated to (46% for those who had the support of a caregiver; 60% for those who used a meals-on-wheels service; 69% for those living in nursing home). According to multivariate analyses, dependence categories, depressive symptoms and cognitive status were identified as independent determinants of malnutrition., Conclusion: Without inferring a causal relationship between dependence and malnutrition, there is a strong need for care structures to take into account the issue of malnutrition when developing services targeting older people., (© The Author(s) 2021. Death and dying are processes that every human being encounters in his or her lifetime and perhaps the greatest loss an individual can suffer. In this sense, fear of death is regarded as a risk and maintaining factor of psychopathology. As such, effective and efficient measurement of this construct becomes a priority. While the Revised Collett-Lester Fear Of Death Scale (CL-FODS) is a brief, commonly used assessment, such a tool is lacking in French clinical practice. The present study aimed to adapt the revised CL-FODS in a general French sample and to determine its psychometric properties, namely its factorial structure, concurrent and convergent validity, and internal consistency. A sample of 590 participants responded to the French revised CL-FODS, as well as three instruments assessing death anxiety (DAS), neuroticism and spirituality (FACIT-Sp), to examine the internal consistency, validity and factorial structure of the scale. Both exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis confirmed a four-factor model: (1) One's Own Death," (2) The Death of Others, (3) The Dying of Others, and (4) One's Own Dying. Five items did not load on these four factors, suggesting that the revised CL-FODS might require further psychometric refinement. The revised CL-FODS showed good internal consistency. The scale was found to be significantly associated with the Death Anxiety Scale. Objectives: In recreational snow sports activities, safety mattresses are placed on obstacles to prevent injuries from a collision with users. However, the performances of these devices in field conditions remain unclear. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of mattress thickness, impact speed, impacting mass and atmospheric conditions on head acceleration during an in-field impact on safety mattress., Design: 42 in-field experimental drop tests of a normative metallic head were conducted on safety mattress to assess the influence of impact speed (5.8m/s or 7.3m/s), impacting mass (6kg or 11.6kg), outside conditions (3 conditions) and mattress thickness (24cm, 32cm, 44cm) on head acceleration at impact., Methods: Linear accelerations were measured and Head Injury Criteria 15ms (HIC 15 ) was computed. A statistical analysis (ANOVA) was used to characterize the effects of the varying parameters on maximal acceleration and HIC 15 ., Results: Reduced impact speed, increased mattress thickness and change in the outside conditions significantly decreased the head acceleration and HIC 15 (p<0.001). The effect of the impacting mass on head acceleration was not significant., Conclusions: This study highlights the influence of impact speed, atmospheric condition and mattress construction on absorption capacities of safety mattresses. The aging process is associated with physiological, sensory, psychological, and sociological changes likely to have an impact on food intake and the nutritional status. The present study aimed to explore the heterogeneity of the French older population (>65 years old) using a multidisciplinary approach. More specifically, the study aimed to highlight different typologies (i.e. clusters of individuals with similar characteristics) within the older population. We conducted face-to-face interviews and tests with 559 French older people, recruited from different categories of dependency (at home without help, at home with help, in nursing homes). Clustering analysis highlighted seven clusters. Clusters 1-3 contained 'young' older people (<80) with a good nutritional status; these clusters differed according to food preferences, the desire to have a healthy diet, or interest in food. Clusters 4-7 mainly contained 'old' older people (80+), with an increase in the nutritional risk from cluster 4 to cluster 7. Two of these clusters grouped healthy and active people with a good level of appetite, while the two other clusters were associated with a clear decline in nutritional status, with people suffering from eating difficulties or depression. The results raise the need to develop targeted interventions to tackle malnutrition and implement health promotion strategies among the seniors., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. DNA methylation plays a critical role during development, particularly in repressing retrotransposons. The mammalian methylation landscape is dependent on the combined activities of the canonical maintenance enzyme Dnmt1 and the de novo Dnmts, 3a and 3b. Here, we demonstrate that Dnmt1 displays de novo methylation activity in vitro and in vivo with specific retrotransposon targeting. We used whole-genome bisulfite and long-read Nanopore sequencing in genetically engineered methylation-depleted mouse embryonic stem cells to provide an in-depth assessment and quantification of this activity. Utilizing additional knockout lines and molecular characterization, we show that the de novo methylation activity of Dnmt1 depends on Uhrf1, and its genomic recruitment overlaps with regions that enrich for Uhrf1, Trim28 and H3K9 trimethylation. Our data demonstrate that Dnmt1 can catalyze DNA methylation in both a de novo and maintenance context, especially at retrotransposons, where this mechanism may provide additional stability for long-term repression and epigenetic propagation throughout development., (© 2021. Background: The spinal meninges play a mechanical protective role for the spinal cord. Better knowledge of the mechanical behavior of these tissues wrapping the cord is required to accurately model the stress and strain fields of the spinal cord during physiological or traumatic motions. Then, the mechanical properties of meninges along the spinal canal are not well documented. The aim of this study was to quantify the elastic meningeal mechanical properties along the porcine spinal cord in both the longitudinal direction and in the circumferential directions for the dura-arachnoid maters complex (DAC) and solely in the longitudinal direction for the pia mater. This analysis was completed in providing a range of isotropic hyperelastic coefficients to take into account the toe region., Methods: Six complete spines (C0 - L5) were harvested from pigs (2-3 months) weighing 43±13 kg. The mechanical tests were performed within 12 h post mortem. A preload of 0.5 N was applied to the pia mater and of 2 N to the DAC samples, followed by 30 preconditioning cycles. Specimens were then loaded to failure at the same strain rate 0.2 mm/s (approximately 0.02/s, traction velocity/length of the sample) up to 12 mm of displacement., Results: The following mean values were proposed for the elastic moduli of the spinal meninges. Longitudinal DAC elastic moduli: 22.4 MPa in cervical, 38.1 MPa in thoracic and 36.6 MPa in lumbar spinal levels; circumferential DAC elastic moduli: 20.6 MPa in cervical, 21.2 MPa in thoracic and 12.2 MPa in lumbar spinal levels; and longitudinal pia mater elastic moduli: 18.4 MPa in cervical, 17.2 MPa in thoracic and 19.6 MPa in lumbar spinal levels., Discussion: The variety of mechanical properties of the spinal meninges suggests that it cannot be regarded as a homogenous structure along the whole length of the spinal cord., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Background: Increasing numbers of scientific studies have dealt with the benefits of animal assisted intervention programs (AAI). Although many positive effects have been identified, there are still few AAI programs in nursing homes. To date, no study has investigated special the difficulties in implementing such a program. The aim of this study was to explore the representations of this type of program among caregivers., Methods: This qualitative study was conducted between January and June 2019. Psychologists conducted 11 interviews with people working in nursing homes. The sample was based on different professions and on the fact that participants had already been involved in an IAA program., Results: The results were organized according to two main themes: brakes and levers. The results show that the brakes were raised quickly before the implementation of the project, but once the project had been implemented, the perceived beneficial effects multiplied and all those interviewed mentioned the benefits of animals. More than half of the caregivers interviewed mentioned animals as a lever, facilitating contact with elderly people suffering from dementia. Setting up a project upstream enhanced the success of this type of program., Conclusion: The benefits perceived by the people interviewed are consistent with the scientific literature. Mammalian cells stably maintain high levels of DNA methylation despite expressing both positive (DNMT3A/B) and negative (TET1-3) regulators. Here, we analyzed the independent and combined effects of these regulators on the DNA methylation landscape using a panel of knockout human embryonic stem cell (ESC) lines. The greatest impact on global methylation levels was observed in DNMT3-deficient cells, including reproducible focal demethylation at thousands of normally methylated loci. Demethylation depends on TET expression and occurs only when both DNMT3s are absent. Dynamic loci are enriched for hydroxymethylcytosine and overlap with subsets of putative somatic enhancers that are methylated in ESCs and can be activated upon differentiation. We observe similar dynamics in mouse ESCs that were less frequent in epiblast stem cells (EpiSCs) and scarce in somatic tissues, suggesting a conserved pluripotency-linked mechanism. Taken together, our data reveal tightly regulated competition between DNMT3s and TETs at thousands of somatic regulatory sequences within pluripotent cells.

Objectives: The aims of this study were to examine the trajectory of depressive symptoms among older French people, to investigate the role of gender in the developmental trajectory of depressive symptoms and to explore whether the linear increase in depressive symptoms might be accentuated or attenuated at time points during which the older adults' scores on social support and health satisfaction scales were higher than their individual averages., Methods/materials: Data were used from a subsample of older adults living at home who participated in a longitudinal study initiated by researchers from the University of Tours. They were collected at five time points over a 9-year period (T1: 2003; T2: 2005; T3: 2007; T4: 2009; T5: 2011). This study included 707 participants, and multilevel growth curve analysis was used on measures of depressive symptoms, gender differences, social support and health satisfaction., Results: Results indicated (1) a significant positive linear effect of age on depressive symptoms; (2) that women reported significantly higher scores of depressive symptoms than men at 63 years old (i.e., intercept) and that this gender difference remained constant across age; (3) that the slope of depressive symptoms appeared to increase at time points during which participants had higher levels of social support and to decrease when they had greater health satisfaction., Conclusion: This study provides pertinent information about the change of depressive symptoms in older people living at home and particularly highlights the interest in studying gender, social support and health satisfaction., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier B.V. Aims and Objectives: To examine the impact of caregivers' street clothes on people living in special care units (SCUs). We hypothesised that caregivers wearing street clothes would improve residents' relationships with other residents and caregivers and, as a consequence, would improve their quality of life., Background: Environmental factors have been recognised as important elements in the care of people with dementia. Among these factors, the importance of the caregivers' appearance and more particularly their street clothes has been raised., Design: The Street Clothes study (STRECLO) was designed as a multicentre crossover observational study., Method: This study was conducted in two volunteer nursing homes. It involved videotaping residents (N = 24) over a 6-month period: caregivers wore uniform and then street clothes for two consecutive three-month periods. Three outcome measures were observed as follows: (a) behaviours of residents, (b) contents of conversations and (c) proximal interactions between residents and caregivers. The STROBE checklist was used to ensure quality reporting during this observational study., Results: When caregivers wore street clothes, we observed the following: (a) greater solicitation and less anxiety in residents, (b) content of conversations between residents and caregivers included more personal and less health information, and (c) more proximal interaction between caregivers and residents., Conclusion: To our knowledge, this is the first study which investigated the long-term effects on residents of SCU caregivers wearing street clothes. Background: The pathogenesis of the central cord syndrome is still unclear. While there is a consensus on hyperextension as the main traumatic mechanism leading to this condition, there is yet to be consensus in studies regarding the pathological features of the spine (intervertebral disc bulging or ligamentum flavum hypertrophy) that could contribute to clinical manifestations., Methods: A comprehensive finite element model of the cervical spine segment and spinal cord was used to simulate high-speed hyperextension. Four stenotic cases were modelled to study the effect of ligamentum flavum hypertrophy and intervertebral disc bulging on the von Mises stress and strain., Findings: During hyperextension, the downward displacement of the ligamentum flavum and a reduction of the spinal canal diameter (up to 17%) led to a dynamic compression of the cord. Ligamentum flavum hypertrophy was associated with stress and strain (peak of 0.011 Mpa and 0.24, respectively) in the lateral corticospinal tracts, which is consistent with the histologic pattern of the central cord syndrome. Linear intervertebral disc bulging alone led to a higher stress in the anterior and posterior funiculi (peak 0.029 Mpa). Combined with hypertrophic ligamentum flavum, it further increased the stress and strain in the corticospinal tracts and in the posterior horn (peak of 0.023 Mpa and 0.35, respectively)., Interpretation: The stenotic typology and geometry greatly influence stress and strain distribution resulting from hyperextension. Background: In thoracolumbar burst fractures, spinal cord primary injury involves a direct impact and energy transfer from bone fragments to the spinal cord. Unfortunately, imaging studies performed after the injury only depict the residual bone fragments position and pattern of spinal cord compression, with little insight on the dynamics involved during traumas. Knowledge of underlying mechanisms could be helpful in determining the severity of the primary injury, hence the extent of spinal cord damage and associated potential for recovery. Finite element models are often used to study dynamic processes, but have never been used specifically to simulate different severities of thoracolumbar burst fractures., Methods: Previously developed thoracolumbar spine and spinal cord finite element models were used and further validated, and representative vertebral fragments were modelled. A full factorial design was used to investigate the effects of comminution of the superior fragment, presence of an inferior fragment, fragments rotation and velocity, on maximum Von Mises stress and strain, maximum major strain, and pressure in the spinal cord., Findings: Fragment velocity clearly was the most influential factor. Fragments rotation and presence of an inferior fragment increased pressure, but rotation decreased both strains outputs. Although significant for both strains outputs, comminution of the superior fragment isn't estimated to influence outputs., Interpretation: This study is the first, to the authors' knowledge, to examine a detailed spinal cord model impacted in situ by fragments from burst fractures. Objective: Maintaining eating pleasure as long as possible is one of the determinants that contributes to and encourages good nutrition in the ageing population. Our study aimed to translate, adapt to the context of food and validate the Temporal Experience of Pleasure Scale (which distinguishes anticipatory and consummatory experiences of pleasure) in a food dependent older French population., Design: Prospective validation study., Setting: 199 participants dependent for their meals, over 65 years old and living at home., Measurements: A pool of 16 self-reported items constituted the initial version of the anticipatory and consummatory eating pleasure scale (ACEPS). Demographic data, nutritional status, appetite and depressive mood were also assessed., Results: The exploratory factorial analysis and also the confirmatory factor analysis highlighted a two-factor model: anticipatory eating pleasure (four items) and consummatory eating pleasure (four items). The ACEPS showed good internal consistency. A higher score on the ACEPS positively correlated with appetite. Consummatory eating pleasure positively correlated with nutritional status and negatively correlated with depressive moods. The oldest-old and also those receiving a meals-on-wheels service had lower scores for anticipatory pleasure (r=-.14, p<.03)., Conclusion: To our knowledge, the ACEPS is the first comprehensive measure of eating pleasure distinguishing anticipatory and consummatory pleasure. This short measure, easily applicable on older people with vulnerability, allows early identification and intervention preventing malnutrition and decline in health. Thrombosis are severe complications of paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH), effectively reduced by eculizumab. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) may play a central role. The objective of this study was to assess the procoagulant activity of plasma isolated from PNH patients (treated or not by eculizumab) and to quantify their circulating EVs.We iteratively collected the platelet-free-plasma of 17 PNH patients and 16 matched healthy volunteers, quantified their circulating EVs by flow cytometry and evaluated their procoagulant activity by thrombin generation and STA-Procoag-procoagulant phospholipid (PPL) assays.A significant decrease of EVs from platelets (P = .024) and an increase of the STA-Procoag-PPL clotting time (P = .049) was observed after initiation of eculizumab and up to 11 weeks after. This reduction of prothrombotic biomarkers was not observed with the thrombin generation test due to a lack of sensitivity of this assay. Active hemolysis was observed in 90% of patients and elevated D-dimers in 41% of them. However, no significant difference was observed between patients and control subjects regarding the procoagulant activity, the EVs quantity, or the cellular origin. Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels were lower in eculizumab-treated patients compared to nontreated patients (441 vs 2448 IU/L). D-dimers and LDH decreased after administration of eculizumab (mean decrease of 1307 ng/mL and 4159 IU/L, respectively).These observations suggest a decrease of the phospholipid-dependent procoagulant potential of EVs after eculizumab therapy in PNH patients. Spinal injury (SPI) often causes death and disability in snow-sport accidents. SPIs often result from spinal compression and flexion, but the injury risks due to over flexion have not been studied. Back protectors are used to prevent SPIs but the testing standards do not evaluate the flexion-extension resistance. To investigate SPI risks and to better define back-protector specifications, this study quantified the flexion-extension range of motions (ROMs) of the thoracic-lumbar spine during typical snowboarding backward falls. A human facet-multibody model, which was calibrated against spinal flexion-extension responses and validated against vehicle-pedestrian impact and snowboarding backward fall, was used to reproduce typical snowboarding backward falls considering various initial conditions (initial velocity, slope steepness, body posture, angle of approach, anthropometry, and snow stiffness). The SPI risks were quantified by normalizing the numerical spinal flexion-extension ROMs against the corresponding ROM thresholds from literature. A high risk of SPI was found in most of the 324 accident scenarios. The thoracic segment T6-T7 had the highest injury risk and incidence. The thoracic spine was found more vulnerable than the lumbar spine. Larger anthropometries and higher initial velocities tended to increase SPI risks while bigger angles of approach helped to reduce the risks. SPIs can result from excessive spinal flexion-extension during snowboarding backward falls. Additional evaluation of back protector's flexion-extension resistance should be included in current testing standards. Over the past 40 years, there has been a growing trend for intergenerational initiatives worldwide. Intergenerational programs (IGPs) aim to facilitate cooperation and exchange among different age groups. While most studies highlight the benefits for each generation, the programs and study designs vary widely. We conducted a systematic review of the scientific literature between 2005 and 2015 to: (1) characterize and define the IGPs studied and (2) identify the benefits for school-age children and older people aged 60 years or over. First, 53 articles with defined keywords were collected from online databases. Then, using inclusion and exclusion criteria, 11 articles were selected. These were classified according to methodological quality and were analyzed one by one. The content of the programs varied: three involved artistic activities, three educational activities, one health, three open-ended activities, and one was organized around a citizen's project. Concerning the benefits of IGPs for children and older adults, some studies highlighted significant differences in positive attitudes, behaviors, confidence, and competence for the children, and significant differences in mental and physical health, and quality of life for older adults. However, it should be noted that those benefits are not systematic. Our findings are discussed in the light of the meaningfulness of the activities and the role of IGPs, organization of the program, and participants' knowledge of the other generation. Future studies may wish to consider searching for additional variables to further refine our understanding of the benefits for participants.

ABSTRACTObjectives:The objectives of the study were to examine the trajectory of spirituality among older adults, to investigate the roles of gender and religion on the developmental trajectory of spirituality, and to explore whether the linear growth of spirituality accelerated or decelerated at time points at which the participants reported high scores of social support and flexibility., Design: A five-year longitudinal study., Setting: The research used data from a longitudinal study, which follows a non-institutionalized older adults cohort of residents from France. The data used in this paper were collected at three time points (T1: 2007; T2: 2009; T3: 2012)., Participants: A total of 567 participants were included in the analysis (59.44% female; Mage = 75.90, SD = 5.12)., Measurements: Multilevel growth curve analysis was used measuring spirituality, satisfaction with social support, and flexibility., Results: The results indicated the following: (1) stability of spirituality over time, (2) older women reported higher levels of spirituality than older men, and those who had a religion reported higher scores of spirituality than their counterparts who had no religion (these effects were strong and clinically meaningful), (3) older adults who reported higher levels of social support and flexibility also reported higher levels of spirituality, and (4) the slope of spirituality seemed to accelerate at time points at which participants also had higher levels of social support and flexibility (these effects were rather small but of theoretical interest)., Conclusion: The results of the present study help to improve the understanding of the potential benefit of encouraging the spiritual aspects of life.

Purpose: Proper evaluation of ski helmet designs and safety standards should rely on head impact conditions involved in skiing and snowboarding head injuries. To study these impacts, main crash scenarios involving head injuries are numerically replicated., Methods: Multibody models of skiers and snowboarders were developed to investigate five common crash scenarios involved in traumatic brain injury: forward and sideways skiing falls, snowboarding backward falls, collisions between users and collisions with obstacles. For each scenario, the influence of crash conditions on head impact (location, speed, linear and rotational accelerations) and risk of injury are evaluated. Crash conditions were initial velocity, user height, position and approach angle, slope steepness, obstacles, and snow stiffness., Results: One thousand one hundred forty-nine crashes were simulated and three significant levels of impact conditions were discriminated over the investigated crash scenarios: 1) the smallest normal-to-slope impact velocities (6 km·h; 22 km·h) and peak linear accelerations (42g; 75g) were obtained during forward and sideways skiing falls; 2) snowboarding backward falls and collisions between users were associated with high normal-to-surface impact velocities (26 km·h; 32 km·h) and head accelerations (80g; 149g) above one published threshold for mild traumatic brain injury but below the pass/fail criteria of helmet standard tests; 3) collisions with obstacles were associated with high normal-to-surface impact velocities (19 km·h; 35 km·h) and the highest head accelerations (626g; 1885g)., Conclusions: Current impact conditions of helmet standard evaluations consistently replicate collisions with obstacles, but need to be revised to better reflect other significant crash scenarios leading to traumatic brain injury.

Introduction: Sport helmet effectiveness in preventing traumatic brain injury (TBI) has been repeatedly questioned. This study assesses the effect of helmet use on risk of TBI and other types of head injury (OTHI) in alpine sports., Methods: From 2012 to 2014, data on the injured population were collected by physicians in on-mountain clinics in 30 French ski resorts, and interviews were conducted on the slope to sample a noninjured control population. Two sets of cases (1425 participants with TBI and 1386 with OTHI) were compared with 2 sets of controls (2145 participants without injury and 40,288 with an injury to a body part other than the head). The effect of helmet use on the risk of TBI and OTHI was evaluated with a multivariate logistic regression adjusted for age, sex, sport, skill level, crash type, and crash location., Results: Using participants without injury as control, we found that helmet wearers were less likely to sustain any head injury (odds ratio [OR] TBI = 0.65; OR OTHI = 0.42). When considering participants with an injury to another body part as control, the risk of OTHI was lower among helmet wearers (OR OTHI : 0.61). However, no significant effect was found for the risk of TBI. Participants with low skill levels, those aged <26 and >50 years, snowboarders, and those involved in collision and in snowpark accidents were at higher risk of head injury., Conclusions: This study confirms the effectiveness of helmets in protecting users from head injuries but questions their effects on TBI, especially concussion., (Copyright © 2017 Wilderness Medical Society. Background: Thrombotic effects are possible complications of red blood cell transfusion. The generation and accumulation of procoagulant red blood cell extracellular vesicles during storage may play an important role in these thrombotic effects. The objective of this study was to assess the value of a simple phospholipid-dependent clot-based assay (STA ® -Procoag-PPL) to estimate the procoagulant activity of stored red blood cells and changes in this activity during storage of the blood component., Materials and Methods: Extracellular vesicles from 12 red blood cell concentrates were isolated at 13 storage time-points and characterised by quantitative and functional methods: the degree of haemolysis (direct spectrophotometry), the quantification and determination of cellular origin (flow cytometry) and the procoagulant activity (thrombin generation and STA ® -Procoag-PPL assays) were assessed., Results: The mean clotting time of extracellular vesicles isolated from red blood cell concentrates decreased from 117.2±3.6 sec on the day of collection to 33.8±1.3 sec at the end of the storage period. This illustrates the phospholipid-dependent procoagulant activity of these extracellular vesicles, as confirmed by thrombin generation. Results of the peak of thrombin and the STA ® -Procoag-PPL were well correlated (partial r=-0.41. p<0.001). In parallel, an exponential increase of the number of red blood cell-derived extracellular vesicles from 1,779/μL to 218,451/μL was observed., Discussion: The STA ® -Procoag-PPL is a potentially useful technique for assessing the procoagulant activity of a red blood cell concentrate.

Objective: Self-report measures of depression are highly important tools used in research and in various healthcare settings for the diagnosis of different levels of depression. The Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) is the first and the most popular scale used to screen for late-life depression. It is endorsed by the Royal College of Physicians and the British Geriatric Society (1992). The purpose of the present research was to investigate whether scores on the GDS 15 capture depressive mood (i.e. trait depression), depressive affect (i.e. short-term depressive state), or both., Methods: For this purpose, a trait-state model (stable trait, autoregressive trait, and state model) was applied to GDS 15 scores obtained at four time points over a 6-year period among a sample of community-dwelling older persons (N = 753). This model allows decomposing the GDS 15 scores into three different variance components: stable trait variance, autoregressive trait variance, and state variance., Results: Our findings revealed a general pattern of a major proportion of stable trait (69%) and autoregressive trait (22%) variance and a very smaller amount of state variance (9%) in the GDS scores across 6 years. Age and gender (i.e. being female) were shown to be positively linked to more stable trait variance., Conclusions: Depression, as assessed with the GDS 15 , should be regarded as a relatively stable and enduring trait construct, reflecting a stable core of a person's depressivity. The negligible amount of state elements in the variation of the GDS 15 scores provides evidence that changing the context will not be enough to cause significant changes in depressive symptoms. To effectively prevent sport traumatic brain injury (TBI), means of protection need to be designed and tested in relation to the reality of head impact. This study quantifies head impacts during a typical snowboarding accident to evaluate helmet standards. A snowboarder numerical model was proposed, validated against experimental data, and used to quantify the influence of accident conditions (speed, snow stiffness, morphology, and position) on head impacts (locations, velocities, and accelerations) and injury risk during snowboarding backward falls. Three hundred twenty-four scenarios were simulated: 70% presented a high risk of mild TBI (head peak acceleration >80 g) and 15% presented a high risk of severe TBI (head injury criterion >1000). Snow stiffness, speed, and snowboarder morphology were the main factors influencing head impact metrics. Mean normal head impact speed (28 ± 6 km/h) was higher than equivalent impact speed used in American standard helmet test (ASTM F2040), and mean tangential impact speed, not included in standard tests, was 13.8 (±7 km/h). In 97% of simulated impacts, the peak head acceleration was below 300 g, which is the pass/fail criteria used in standard tests. Results suggest that initial speed, impacted surface, and pass/fail criteria used in helmet standard performance tests do not fully reflect magnitude and variability of snowboarding backward-fall impacts., (© 2016 John Wiley & Sons A/S. Background: Fish classifications, as those of most other taxonomic groups, are being transformed drastically as new molecular phylogenies provide support for natural groups that were unanticipated by previous studies. A brief review of the main criteria used by ichthyologists to define their classifications during the last 50 years, however, reveals slow progress towards using an explicit phylogenetic framework. Instead, the trend has been to rely, in varying degrees, on deep-rooted anatomical concepts and authority, often mixing taxa with explicit phylogenetic support with arbitrary groupings. Two leading sources in ichthyology frequently used for fish classifications (JS Nelson's volumes of Fishes of the World and W. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes) fail to adopt a global phylogenetic framework despite much recent progress made towards the resolution of the fish Tree of Life. The first explicit phylogenetic classification of bony fishes was published in 2013, based on a comprehensive molecular phylogeny ( www.deepfin.org ). We here update the first version of that classification by incorporating the most recent phylogenetic results., Results: The updated classification presented here is based on phylogenies inferred using molecular and genomic data for nearly 2000 fishes. A total of 72 orders (and 79 suborders) are recognized in this version, compared with 66 orders in version 1. The phylogeny resolves placement of 410 families, or ~80% of the total of 514 families of bony fishes currently recognized. The ordinal status of 30 percomorph families included in this study, however, remains uncertain (incertae sedis in the series Carangaria, Ovalentaria, or Eupercaria). Comments to support taxonomic decisions and comparisons with conflicting taxonomic groups proposed by others are presented. We also highlight cases were morphological support exist for the groups being classified., Conclusions: This version of the phylogenetic classification of bony fishes is substantially improved, providing resolution for more taxa than previous versions, based on more densely sampled phylogenetic trees. The classification presented in this study represents, unlike any other, the most up-to-date hypothesis of the Tree of Life of fishes.

In 2014, we moved from XE-2100 with Standard SIS rules to XN-9000 with GFHC recommendations for slide review. The aim of our study was to evaluate the potential impact of the new Sysmex ® automation with implementation of GFHC rules on our review rate, turnaround time (TAT), workload and on CD34+ stem cells enumeration. We conducted a retrospective observational study from September 2013 through August 2014, in CHU Dinant Godinne UCL Namur. With the GFHC recommendations and the new Sysmex ® automation, we significantly reduced our review rate by nearly 30% considering all units (35.8% vs 25.9%), and up to 73% when excluding oncology haematology department (17.5% vs 4.7%). We also noticed significantly shorter TAT for CBC measurement (median for routine samples: 76.4 vs 56.8 minutes, p < 0.0001; urgent samples: 18.9 vs 15.2 minutes, p = 0.023), slide review (median: 54.9 vs 36.4 minutes, p < 0.0001) and CD34+ enumeration performed on peripheral blood samples (p < 0.001) and on apheresis samples (p = 0.026). In conclusion, GFHC recommendations implemented on the new Sysmex ® XN-9000 resulted in a significant reduction in review rate and in TAT. This is particularly of interest for the clinicians with subsequent potential faster patient management.

The study aimed to develop a French version of the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Spiritual Well-being short version (FACIT-Sp12), in order to provide a self-reported measure for French people in the field of gerontology. The study involving 63 nursing home residents was conducted to evaluate the construct validity, reliability, and convergence validity of the FACIT-Sp12. A confirmatory factor analysis corroborated a three-factor model (Meaning, Peace and Faith) with modifications for two items, also valid among people with cognitive impairment. Subscales showed good internal consistency and are correlated with quality of life and depression. In conclusion, the validated French version is an suitable instrument to study the maintenance and promotion of quality of life in the elderly.

Using the dual-process model of assimilative-tenacity (TGP) and accommodative-flexibility (FGA), the study aims to identify trajectories of TGP and FGA over five time points within a 9-year period, explore the relationships between the trajectories of TGP and FGA, and explore if participants from distinct TGP and FGA trajectories differed in indicators of well-being and depression. Latent class growth analysis was used in a five-wave longitudinal design among an older population of 747 participants over 65 years. Results highlight (1) emergence of four trajectories for flexibility (low and increasing, moderate and increasing, moderately high and stable, and high and stable trajectories) and three trajectories for tenacity (low and stable, moderate and stable, and high and decreasing trajectories), (2) that older people belonging to particular trajectories of FGA are not more likely to belong to particular trajectories of TGP, and (3) that participants from the high and decreasing TGP and high or moderately high and stable FGA trajectories were characterized by high score of perceived health, satisfaction with life, and self-esteem and low score of depression moods. These results highlight that the heterogeneity in longitudinal TGP and FGA scores throughout the life span needs to be accounted for in future research.

Purpose: Mechanisms of injury and description of head impacts leading to traumatic brain injury (TBI) in skiers and snowboarders have not been extensively documented. We investigate snow sport crashes leading to TBI 1) to identify typical mechanisms leading to TBI to better target prevention measures and 2) to identify the injury mechanisms and the head impact conditions., Methods: The subjects were skiers and snowboarders diagnosed of TBI and admitted between 2013 and 2015 to one of the 15 medical offices and three hospital centers involved in the study. The survey includes the description of the patients (age, sex, practice, skill level, and helmet use), the crash (type, location, estimated speed, causes, and fall description), and the injuries sustained (symptoms, head trauma scores, and other injuries). Sketches were used to describe the crash and impact locations. Clustering methods were used to distinguish profiles of injured participants., Results: A total of 295 skiers and 71 snowboarders were interviewed. The most frequent type of mechanism was falls (54%), followed by collision between users (18%) and jumps (15%). Collision with obstacle (13%) caused the most serious TBI. Three categories of patients were identified. First, men age 16-25 yr are more involved in crash at high speed or in connection with a jump. Second, women, children (<16 yr), and beginners are particularly injured in collisions between users. Third, those older than 50 yr, usually nonhelmeted, are frequently involved in falls. Ten crash scenarios were identified. Falling head first is the most frequent of skiers' falls (28%)., Conclusion: Crash scenarios leading to TBI were identified and associated with profiles of injured participants. Those results should help to better target TBI prevention and protection campaigns.

Background: The checklist of Mysida and Lophogastrida of Greece was created within the framework of the Greek Taxon Information System (GTIS), which is one of the applications of the LifeWatchGreece Research Infrastructure (ESFRI) resuming efforts to develop a complete checklist of species recorded and reported from Greek waters. The objectives of the present study were to update and cross-check taxonomically all records of Mysida and Lophogastrida species known to occur in Greek waters in order to search for inaccuracies and omissions., New Information: The up-to-date checklist of Mysida and Lophogastrida of Greece comprises 49 species, classified to 25 genera.
