Atlantification, known as impacts of high-latitude Atlantic water inflows on the Arctic Ocean has strengthened owing to climate change, corresponding to the rapid ice retreat in the Arctic. The relationship between phytoplankton and environmental changes in the Arctic on the interannual scale is unclear because of the lack of long-time series data. In this study, we discuss the ecological response to Atlantic water intrusion in the Kongsfjorden,Svalbard. We measured chlorophyll a and photosynthesis pigments for the water column samples from a fixed section along the Kongsfjorden to study the response of phytoplankton biomass and communities to Atlantic water intrusion in the summer season from 2007 to 2018. The results showed that dinoflagellates, prasinophytes, cryptophytes, and chlorophytes consistently accounted for over 50% of the total biomass, with the distinct annual variation of chlorophyll a. Bioavailable nitrogen was the main limiting factor on phytoplankton growth in the study area, as inferred by its concentration and nutrients ratios. The relationship between phytoplankton and water mass analysis suggested that the intrusion of Atlantic water in Kongsfjorden may cause interannual variability of the phytoplankton biomass and community structure by influencing the nutrient supply and water stratification in the fjord region. Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in surface sediments were investigated from the Bering Sea, the Chukchi Sea and adjacent Arctic Ocean in 2010. Total concentrations (dry weight) of Σ 14 PFAS in surface sediments (0.85 ± 0.22 ng g -1 ) of the Bering Sea were lower than that in the Chukchi Sea and adjacent Arctic Ocean (1.27 ± 0.53 ng g -1 ). Perfluoro-butanoic acid (PFBS) and perfluoro-octanoic acid (PFOA) were the dominant PFAS in these areas. The concentrations of Σ 15 OCPs in the sediment of the Bering Sea (13.00 ± 6.17 ng g -1 ) was slightly higher than that in the Chukchi and Arctic Ocean (12.05 ± 2.27 ng g -1 ). The most abundant OCPs were hexachlorocyclohexane isomers (HCHs) and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and its metabolites. The composition patterns of HCHs and DDTs indicated that they were mainly derived from the early residues via river runoff. Increasing trends of PFAS, HCHs and DDTs in surface sediments from the Bering Sea to the Arctic Ocean were found, indicating oceanic transport. In summary, the concentrations of OCPs were orders of magnitude greater than the observed PFAS concentrations, and the concentrations of PFAS and OCPs in surface sediments from the Bering Sea to the Chukchi Sea and adjacent Arctic Ocean are at the low to moderate levels by comparing with other coastal and marine sediments worldwide., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Organic and inorganic sedimentary parameters in and off the Changjiang Estuary have been analyzed to reconstruct historical trends in eutrophication and hypoxia over the last century. The lipid biomarker concentrations in the Changjiang Estuary mud area (CEMA) indicated eutrophication accelerated after the 1970s. Meanwhile, Mo/Al indicated hypoxia has increased since 1960s. Eutrophication and hypoxia in the CEMA are primarily a result of the dramatically increased load of terrestrial nutrients from the Changjiang to the East China Sea. The lipid biomarker concentrations in the southwest Cheju Island mud area (SCIMA) showed primary production is controlled mainly by changes in regional climate and marine current. No significant hypoxia occurred in the SCIMA over the past century as indicated by Mo/Al. Therefore, geochemical indicators of eutrophication and hypoxia revealed different patterns between the CEMA and SCIMA, suggesting the role of river-derived nutrients in sustaining eutrophication and hypoxia in the CEMA since the 1960s., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Ltd.
