Objectives: To identify the range of evidence for relationships between psychological factors using the Fear Avoidance Model (FAM) as a guiding framework and relevant clinical outcomes in adult patients with persisting symptoms after concussion (PSaC), develop a comprehensive understanding of psychological factors that have been identified as predictors of clinical outcomes for PSaC, and contribute to the theoretical framework of the FAM for PSaC., Data Sources: Six databases (CINAHL, Embase, PsycINFO, PubMed, SportDiscus, and Web of Science) were searched by a librarian for empirical and theoretical publications and experimental and quasi-experimental study designs. The literature search was not limited by publication date restrictions. Gray literature, with the exception of doctoral dissertations, was excluded., Study Selection: We included studies in the English language consisting of human participants aged ≥18 years. Articles must have included both outcomes pertaining to PSaC (≥3mo after injury) and psychological constructs., Data Extraction: One reviewer extracted data from the resulting studies using a standardized data extraction form designed for this review. Two reviewers independently assessed risk of bias using the Quality in Prognosis Studies tool., Data Synthesis: This review found numerous psychological constructs, some directly linked to the FAM, that have potential prognostic relationships with PSaC. However, research remains limited and some psychological factors central to FAM were only identified in a small number of studies (catastrophizing, cogniphobia, and avoidance), whereas other psychological factors were studied more extensively (anxiety and depression)., Conclusions: There is the need for additional evidence, and this integrative review provides an adaptation of the FAM for PSaC to be used as a guiding preliminary framework for future research. The precise organization of pre- and postsynaptic terminals is crucial for normal synaptic function in the brain. In addition to its canonical role as a neurotrophin-3 receptor tyrosine kinase, postsynaptic TrkC promotes excitatory synapse organization through interaction with presynaptic receptor-type tyrosine phosphatase PTPσ. To isolate the synaptic organizer function of TrkC from its role as a neurotrophin-3 receptor, we generated mice carrying TrkC point mutations that selectively abolish PTPσ binding. The excitatory synapses in mutant mice had abnormal synaptic vesicle clustering and postsynaptic density elongation, more silent synapses, and fewer active synapses, which additionally exhibited enhanced basal transmission with impaired release probability. Alongside these phenotypes, we observed aberrant synaptic protein phosphorylation, but no differences in the neurotrophin signaling pathway. Consistent with reports linking these aberrantly phosphorylated proteins to neuropsychiatric disorders, mutant TrkC knock-in mice displayed impaired social responses and increased avoidance behavior. Xenopus laevis tadpoles exhibit an avoidance behavior when they encounter a moving visual stimulus. A visual avoidance event occurs when a moving object approaches the eye of a free-swimming animal at an approximately 90-degree angle and the animal turns in response to the encounter. Analysis of this behavior requires tracking both the free-swimming animal and the moving visual stimulus both prior to and after the encounter. Previous automated tracking software does not discriminate the moving animal from the moving stimulus, requiring time-consuming manual analysis. Here we present X-Tracker, an automated behavior tracking code that can detect and discriminate moving visual stimuli and free-swimming animals and score encounters and avoidance events. X-Tracker is as accurate as human analysis without the human time commitment. We also present software improvements to our previous visual stimulus presentation and image capture that optimize videos for automated analysis, and hardware improvements that increase the number of animal-stimulus encounters. X-Tracker is a high throughput, unbiased, and significant time-saving analysis system that will greatly facilitate visual avoidance behavior analysis of Xenopus laevis tadpoles, and potentially other free-swimming organisms. Introduction: In the case of patients with Chronic Low Back Pain (cLBP), Functional Restoration Programs (FRP) can improve their condition. Chronicity may reoccur and lead to difficulties in the ability to work related to Fear-Avoidance Beliefs, which may depend on lower motor control., Rationale of the Study: Whereas a limited clinical scale evaluates these beliefs, our study is justified by the search to define motor control parameters that can be used as quantified indicators of fear-avoidance beliefs associated with work activity., Aim: The aim of this study is to explore whether difficulty in working one year after participating in the FRP was related to low motor control in patients with cLBP., Methods: Two groups were defined as: "the patients who could work one year after FRP" (called W-Group) and "the patients who could not work one year after FRP because of cLBP" (called NW-Group). The clinical analysis is based on the assessment of pain intensity and the Fear-Avoidance Belief Questionnaire (or FABQ). Gait stability and coefficients of attenuation on four back levels were considered., Results: The NW-Group had a significantly higher FABQ score than the W-Group one year after FRP (p = 0.02) without any difference regarding pain intensity (p = 0.31). Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) are commonly used in both commercial and agricultural sectors. As a result, ZnO-NPs are extensively discharged into soil ecosystems, creating a significant environmental issue. Therefore, it is crucial to assess their influence on the soil ecology to ensure its secure and enduring utilization in the future. The exact degree of toxicity associated with ZnO-NPs and their ionic form is still uncertain. To address the challenges, the study used the soil bioindicator earthworm species Eudrilus eugeniae as an experimental model to evaluate the effects of two zinc species (ZnO-NPs and ZnCl 2 ) at 100, 250, 500, and 750 mg kg -1 and control (0 mg kg -1 ) in garden soil over 28 days. The investigation also examined the impact of exposure on survival, reproduction, neuro-biomarker, avoidance behavior, and accumulation. The highest avoidance rates were 27.5% for ZnO-NP and 37.5% for ZnCl 2 at 750 mg kg -1 . ZnCl 2 treatment reduced juvenile production by 3.73 ± 1.73, while ZnO-NPs showed 4.67 ± 1.15. At 750 mg kg -1 , soils with ZnCl 2 (63.3%) demonstrated lower survival rates than those with ZnO-NPs (53.3%), likely because of higher Zn ion levels. After 28 days of exposure, ZnCl 2 (536.32 ± 11 mol min -1 ) activated AChE enzymes more than ZnO-NPs (497.7 ± 59 mol min -1 ) at the same dose, compared to control (145.88 ± 28 to 149.41 ± 23 mol min -1 ). Nanoparticles and zinc ions bioaccumulated and reacted negatively with the neurotoxic marker AChE, affecting earthworm reproduction and behavior. However, earthworms exposed to ZnCl 2 exhibited less intestinal Zn than those exposed to NPs. The present work contradicts the finding that ZnO-NPs have hazardous effects on soil organisms. The results indicate that earthworm E. eugeniae may significantly affect soil metal uptake from metallic nanoparticles (NPs). Vehicle collisions with birds are financially costly and dangerous to humans and animals. To reduce collisions, it is necessary to understand how birds respond to approaching vehicles. We used simulated ( i.e ., animals exposed to video playback) and real vehicle approaches with mallards ( Anas platyrynchos ) to quantify flight behavior and probability of collision under different vehicle speeds and times of day (day vs . night). Birds exposed to simulated nighttime approaches exhibited reduced probability of attempting escape, but when escape was attempted, fled with more time before collision compared to birds exposed to simulated daytime approaches. The lower probability of flight may indicate that the visual stimulus of vehicle approaches at night ( i.e ., looming headlights) is perceived as less threatening than when the full vehicle is more visible during the day; alternatively, the mallard visual system might be incompatible with vehicle lighting in dark settings. Mallards approached by a real vehicle exhibited a delayed margin of safety (both flight initiation distance and time before collision decreased with speed); they are the first bird species found to exhibit this response to vehicle approach. Background: Schizophrenia often involves persecutory delusions, which cause psychological distress. Some patients use online gaming as a coping tool. However, excessive online gaming has raised concerns about internet gaming disorders (IGD), while any soothing effects of online gaming on psychological distress remain unclear. Herein, we report changes in anxiety and IGD severity, measured using rating scales, in a patient with schizophrenia who used online gaming as a coping strategy for psychological distress., Case Presentation: A 43-year-old woman diagnosed with schizophrenia had worsening persecutory delusions, including that of being targeted by snipers, and had difficulty going out because of anxiety. She coped with her psychological distress using online shooting games. We assessed her state and trait anxiety, social anxiety, avoidance behavior when alone, and IGD severity. There was a notable reduction in the state anxiety score after the introduction of online gaming. The scores for trait anxiety, social anxiety, and avoidance behavior when alone decreased noticeably after the acquisition of coping strategies. This case demonstrates the presence of IGD only during the acquisition of coping strategies., Conclusion: This case highlights the potential of online gaming as a coping strategy for schizophrenia-related anxiety. However, excessive gaming can lead to IGD and thus necessitates caution. Study Objectives: The effectiveness of advanced emergency braking systems (AEBS) in preventing drowsy driving-related truck collisions remains unclear. We aimed to evaluate the damage-mitigation effect of AEBS on drowsy driving-related collisions involving large trucks using collision rate and damage amount., Methods: Data collected by a Japanese transportation company from 1,699 collisions involving 31,107 large trucks over 7 years were analyzed post-hoc. The collision rate (number of trucks with collisions/total number of trucks) and damage amount (total amount of property damage and personal injury) were compared based on whether the collisions were caused by drowsy or non-drowsy driving and whether the trucks were equipped with AEBS or not., Results: For all and non-drowsy driving-related collisions, the collision rate for the 12,887 trucks with AEBS (1.62 and 1.20 collisions/truck/7 years, respectively) was significantly lower than that for the 18,220 trucks without AEBS (1.94 and 1.56 collisions/truck/7 years, respectively) (p=0.04 and p=0.008, respectively). However, for drowsy driving-related collisions, the collision rate did not significantly differ between trucks with and without AEBS. The damage amount in neither type of collision (drowsy vs. non-drowsy) significantly differed between trucks with and without AEBS., Conclusions: Regarding the collision rate of large trucks, AEBS was effective in non-drowsy driving-related collisions, but not in collisions involving drowsy driving. The damage amount was not mitigated for trucks with and without AEBS regardless of the collision type. Violence is a critical issue in homeless shelters that affects service users and staff, yet there is limited evidence on how shelter-based violence occurs. The objective of this qualitative study was to investigate the antecedents and consequences of shelter-based violence from the perspectives of service users and staff. Purposive sampling was used to recruit individuals experiencing homelessness and shelter staff in a large metropolitan city in Ontario, Canada. Data from in-depth interviews with 56 individuals experiencing homelessness and 30 shelter staff were analyzed. Findings showed that shelter-based violence toward service users and staff was perceived to manifest in response to three interacting factors: (a) burden of homelessness and shelter living, (b) individual histories and marginalization, and (c) interpersonal conflict. These antecedents had a hierarchical structure in that each subsequent factor exacerbated the risk of previous ones and culminated with the most proximal factor for violence. There were three primary outcomes of shelter-based violence reported by service users and staff: (a) health and environmental harms, (b), procedural enforcement, and (c) avoidant behaviors. Avoidance was often a subsequent impact following health harms, as was procedural enforcement to a lesser extent. Overall, the study findings demonstrate that shelter-based violence is a complex and dynamic problem that is perceived to be the result of interacting structural, environmental, programmatic, interpersonal, and individual factors, with similar consequences for service users and staff. During locomotion, most vertebrates-and invertebrates such as Drosophila melanogaster-are able to quickly adapt to terrain irregularities or avoid physical threats by integrating sensory information along with motor commands. Key to this adaptability are leg mechanosensory structures, which assist in motor coordination by transmitting external cues and proprioceptive information to motor centers in the central nervous system. Nevertheless, how different mechanosensory structures engage these locomotor centers remains poorly understood. Here, we tested the role of mechanosensory structures in movement initiation by optogenetically stimulating specific classes of leg sensory structures. We found that stimulation of leg mechanosensory bristles (MsBs) and the femoral chordotonal organ (ChO) is sufficient to initiate forward movement in immobile animals. While the stimulation of the ChO required brain centers to induce forward movement, unexpectedly, brief stimulation of leg MsBs triggered a fast response and sustained motor activity dependent only on the ventral nerve cord (VNC). Moreover, this leg-MsB-mediated movement lacked inter- and intra-leg coordination but preserved antagonistic muscle activity within joints. Finally, we show that leg-MsB activation mediates strong avoidance behavior away from the stimulus source, which is preserved even in the absence of a central brain. Overall, our data show that mechanosensory stimulation can elicit a fast motor response, independently of central brain commands, to evade potentially harmful stimuli. The advent of artificial lighting, particularly during the evening and night, has significantly altered the predictable daily light and dark cycles in recent times. Altered light environments disrupt the biological clock and negatively impact mood and cognition. Although adolescents commonly experience chronic changes in light/dark cycles, our understanding of how the adolescents' brain adapts to altered light environments remains limited. Here, we investigated the impact of chronic light cycle disruption (LCD) during adolescence, exposing adolescent mice to 19 h of light and 5 h of darkness for 5 days and 12 L:12D for 2 days per week (LCD group) for 4 weeks. We showed that LCD exposure did not affect circadian locomotor activity but impaired memory and increased avoidance response in adolescent mice. Clock gene expression and neuronal activity rhythms analysis revealed that LCD disrupted local molecular clock and neuronal activity in the dentate gyrus (DG) and in the medial amygdala (MeA) but not in the circadian pacemaker (SCN). In addition, we characterized the photoresponsiveness of the MeA and showed that somatostatin neurons are affected by acute and chronic aberrant light exposure during adolescence. Psychological treatments of MS-related fatigue mostly depend on energy conservation programs. We argue that the evidence for energy conservation training is weak - in contrast to some reviews on this topic. The reasons for our concerns are the use of informed passive control groups allowing negative placebo effects, the lack of predefined primary outcome parameter, statistically rather than clinically significant effects, and the use of insensitive fatigue questionnaires. We propose to base psychological interventions not on a view of fatigue as a constant loss of mental energy but as a subjective representation ("feeling") of an inflammatory state, which draws away attentional capacity. This conceptualization allows to develop a three-step treatment approach: Getting short-term control on fatigue, extinction to reduce fatigue-related avoidance behavior, and a systematic increase of activities by pacing. Our proposal depends on the techniques, that can interrupt ongoing feelings of fatigue and can serve as a basis for extinction. We propose that Progressive Muscle Relaxation might be such a technique. The advantage of our model is that it shares similarities with well-established treatments for phobias and chronic pain and we discuss the shared set of assumptions. Anthropogenic noise is one of the fastest growing, globally widespread pollutants, affecting countless species worldwide. Despite accumulating evidence of the negative impacts of wind turbines on wildlife, little is known about how the noise they generate affects ecological systems. Songbirds may be susceptible to noise pollution due to their reliance on vocal communication and thus, in this field study, we examined how songbirds are affected by wind turbine noise. We broadcasted noise produced by one wind turbine in a migratory stopover site during the nonbreeding season. Throughout the study, we repeatedly monitored the acoustic environment and songbird community before, during, and after the noise treatments with passive acoustic monitoring and mist netting. We employed generalized linear mixed effects models to assess the impact of experimental noise treatment on birds behavior and likelihood ratio tests to compare models with variables of interest with null models. The daily number of birds in the presence of wind turbine noise decreased by approximately 30% compared with the before and after phases. This reduction had a significant spatial pattern; the largest decrease was closer to the speaker and on its downwind side, fitting measured sound propagation. Although we found no impact on species diversity, two out of three most common species showed clear avoidance behavior: 45% and 36% decrease in abundance for the lesser whitethroat (Sylvia curruca) and Sardinian warbler (Sylvia melanocephala momus), respectively. In the after phase, there were lingering effects on the lesser whitethroat. The age structure of the lesser whitethroat population was affected because only juvenile birds showed avoidance behavior. No difference in avoidance extent was found between migratory and nonmigratory species, but the impacts of displacement on migrants during stopover are especially troubling from a conservation perspective. Our results stress the need to address the impacts of noise pollution on wildlife when planning noise-generating infrastructures, such as wind turbines, to allow for sustainable development without threatening already declining songbird populations., (© 2024 The Authors. Background: Ecosystems are brimming with myriad compounds, including some at very low concentrations that are indispensable for insect survival and reproduction. Screening strategies for identifying active compounds are typically based on bioassay-guided approaches., Results: Here, we selected two candidate odorant receptors from a major pest of cruciferous plants-the diamondback moth Plutella xylostella-as targets to screen for active semiochemicals. One of these ORs, PxylOR16, exhibited a specific, sensitive response to heptanal, with both larvae and adult P. xylostella displaying heptanal avoidance behavior. Gene knockout studies based on CRISPR/Cas9 experimentally confirmed that PxylOR16 mediates this avoidance. Intriguingly, rather than being involved in P. xylostella-host plant interaction, we discovered that P. xylostella recognizes heptanal from the cuticular volatiles of the parasitoid wasp Cotesia vestalis, possibly to avoid parasitization., Conclusions: Our study thus showcases how the deorphanization of odorant receptors can drive discoveries about their complex functions in mediating insect survival. Freshwater fishes exhibit a wide range of auditory adaptations and capabilities, which are assumed to help them navigate their environment, avoid predators, and find potential mates. Yet, we know very little about how freshwater environments sound to fish, or how fish with different auditory adaptations respond to different soundscapes. We first compiled data on fish hearing acuity and adaptations and provided a portrait of how anthropogenic sounds compare to natural sounds in different freshwater soundscapes. We then conducted a sound-enrichment field experiment at Lake Saint Pierre, a large fluvial lake in Canada, to evaluate the effect of motorboat sound exposure on the fish community by looking at the extent to which changes in species abundances were linked to auditory adaptations. Data compilation showed that the hearing acuity of most species overlaps with a wide range of ambient and anthropogenic underwater sounds while the field experiment showed that species with more specialized auditory structures were captured less often in sound-enriched traps, indicating avoidance behavior. The survival of hosts during infections relies on their ability to mount effective molecular and behavioral immune responses. Despite extensive research on these defense strategies in various species, including the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans , the neural mechanisms underlying their interaction remain poorly understood. Previous studies have highlighted the role of neural G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) in regulating both immunity and pathogen avoidance, which is particularly dependent on aerotaxis. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a screen of mutants in neuropeptide receptor family genes. We found that loss-of-function mutations in npr-15 activated immunity while suppressing pathogen avoidance behavior. Through further analysis, NPR-15 was found to regulate immunity by modulating the activity of key transcription factors, namely GATA/ELT-2 and TFEB/HLH-30. Surprisingly, the lack of pathogen avoidance of npr-15 mutant animals was not influenced by oxygen levels. Moreover, our studies revealed that the amphid sensory neuron ASJ is involved in mediating the immune and behavioral responses orchestrated by NPR-15. Additionally, NPR-15 was found to regulate avoidance behavior via the TRPM (transient receptor potential melastatin) gene, GON-2, which may sense the intestinal distension caused by bacterial colonization to elicit pathogen avoidance. The amygdala is a heterogeneous network of subcortical nuclei with central importance in cognitive and clinical neuroscience. Various experimental designs in human psychology and animal model research have mapped multiple conceptual frameworks (e.g., valence/salience and decision making) to ever more refined amygdala circuitry. However, these predominantly bottom up-driven accounts often rely on interpretations tailored to a specific phenomenon, thus preventing comprehensive and integrative theories. We argue here that an active inference model of amygdala function could unify these fractionated approaches into an overarching framework for clearer empirical predictions and mechanistic interpretations. Pain-related avoidance is adaptive when there is a bodily threat, but when it generalizes to safe movements/situations, it may become disabling. Both subclinical anxiety-a vulnerability marker for chronic pain-and chronic pain are associated with excessive fear generalization to safe stimuli/situations. Previous research focused mainly on passive fear correlates (psychophysiological arousal and self-reports) leaving avoidance behavior poorly understood. Therefore, we tested whether high-anxious individuals generalize their pain-related avoidance behavior more to novel, safe contexts than low-anxious people. In a robotic-arm-reaching task, both groups (low vs high trait anxiety) performed 1 of 3 movements to reach a target. In the threat context (black background), a painful stimulus could be partly/completely prevented by performing more effortful trajectories (longer and more force needed); in the safe context (white background), no pain occurred. Generalization of avoidance was tested in 2 novel contexts (light/dark gray backgrounds). We assessed pain expectancy, pain-related fear, startle eyeblink responses for all trajectories, and avoidance behavior (ie, maximal deviation from shortest trajectory). Results indicated that differential fear and expectancy selectively generalized to the novel context resembling the original threat context in both groups. Interestingly and in contrast with the verbal reports, high-anxious participants avoided more in the novel context resembling the original safe context, but not in the 1 resembling the threat context. No generalization emerged in the startle data. Because excessive pain-related avoidance specifically may cause withdrawal from daily life activities, these findings suggest that high-anxious individuals may be vulnerable to developing chronic pain disability. PERSPECTIVE: This paper shows that high-anxious people do not overgeneralize pain-related fear and pain expectancy learned in a threat context more to novel, safe contexts than low-anxious individuals, but that they do avoid more in those contexts. Mood disorders, like major depressive disorder, can be precipitated by chronic stress and are more likely to be diagnosed in cisgender women than in cisgender men. This suggests that stress signaling in the brain is sexually dimorphic. We used a chronic variable mild stress paradigm to stress female and male mice for 6 weeks, followed by an assessment of avoidance behavior: the open field test, the elevated plus maze, the light/dark box emergence test, and the novelty suppressed feeding test. Additional cohorts were used for bulk RNA-Sequencing of the anterodorsal bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (adBNST) and whole-cell patch clamp electrophysiology in NPY-expressing neurons of the adBNST to record stress-sensitive M-currents. Our results indicate that females are more affected by chronic stress as indicated by an increase in avoidance behaviors, but that this is also dependent on the estrous stage of the animals such that diestrus females show more avoidant behaviors regardless of stress treatment. Results also indicate that NPY-expressing neurons of the adBNST are not major mediators of chronic stress as the M-current was not affected by treatment. RNA-Sequencing data suggests sex differences in estrogen signaling, serotonin signaling, and orexin signaling in the adBNST. Background: Illness perceptions (IPs) and avoidance behavior both predict quality of life (QoL) in people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). This study examined whether the effects of IPs on QoL are mediated by avoidance behaviors, and whether this mediation is moderated by participant treatment-seeking status. Methods: People with self-reported IBS ( n  = 253) answered a survey assessing QoL, IPs, avoidance behaviors, and treatment-seeking status. Moderated-mediation analyses investigated the paths from IPs through avoidance behaviors to QoL, with treatment-seeking status entered as a moderator. Results: The final moderated mediation model included the IPs consequences , timeline and emotional representations as independent variables and avoidance behavior and depressive reactions as mediators. This model explained 68.6% of the variance in QoL. Among treatment-seeking participants five significant mediation effects were found, whereas only one significant mediation effect was found among participants who did not report seeking treatment. Conclusions: IPs seem to drive avoidant behavioral responses to IBS symptoms, which in turn predict reductions in QoL. These relationships seem more pronounced among people who seek treatment for their symptoms. Apart from morphological, biochemical, and genetic alterations induced by teratogen compounds, there is an increased interest in characterizing behavioral alterations. Behavior is a sensitive parameter that can provide information regarding developmental disruptions non-invasively. Behavioral disturbances interfere with animals' capacity to cope with the environment, having an impact on the organism's life. Hereby, behavioral assays consisting of recording larvae in multi-well plates, Petri dishes, or cuvettes and video analysis using adequate software, allowing teratogen screening of behavior, are proposed. Most experimental avoidance paradigms lack either control over the experimental situation or simplify real-life avoidance behavior to a great extent, making it difficult to generalize the results to the complex approach-avoidance situations that anxious individuals face in daily life. The current study aimed to examine the usability of our recently developed free-exploratory avoidance paradigm in Virtual Reality (VR) that allows for the assessment of subjective as well as behavioral avoidance in participants with varying levels of spider fear. In a VR escape room, participants searched for cues to decipher a code-locked door. Opening a wooden box marked with a post-it note (conditioned stimulus, CS) resulted in exposure to a virtual crawling spider (unconditioned stimulus, US). Avoidance of the original CS and other objects marked with the CS (generalization stimuli, GSs; EXPgen condition) or non-marked (CONT condition) objects was measured via questionnaires and relative manipulation times in a novel room. We expected a positive linear relationship between US aversiveness (levels of spider fear) and (generalization of) fear and avoidance behaviors. Avoidance learning and generalization was demonstrated on both a subjective and behavioral level. Higher levels of spider fear were, overall, related to more negative emotions in response to the encounter with the spider, higher US expectancies for the GSs, and more self-reported and behavioral avoidance of the original CS and the GSs. Finally, we explored relationships between trait anxiety and intolerance of uncertainty and fear and avoidance (generalization), but no robust associations were observed. In conclusion, we confirmed the expected positive linear relationship between spider fear and (generalization of) fear and avoidance behaviors. Locusts (Locusta migratoria) are one of the most destructive insect pests worldwide. Entomopathogenic fungi can infect and kill locusts, with Metarhizium acridum having evolved as a specialized acridid pathogen. However, locusts have evolved countermeasures to limit or avoid microbial pathogens, although the underlying molecular mechanisms behind these defenses remain obscure. Here, we demonstrate that L. migratoria exhibit avoidance behaviors towards M. acridum contaminated food via recognition of fungal volatiles, with locust perception of the volatile mediated by the LmigCSP60 chemosensory protein. RNAi-knockdown of LmigCSP60 lowered locust M. acridum avoidance behavior and increased infection and mortality. The fungal volatile, 2-phenylethanol (PEA), was identified to participate in locust behavioral avoidance. RNAi-knockdown of LmigCSP60 reduced antennal electrophysiological responses to PEA and impaired locust avoidance to the compound. Purified LmigCSP60 was able to bind a set of fungal volatiles including PEA. Furthermore, reduction of PEA emission by M. acridum via construction of a targeted gene knockout mutant of the alcohol dehydrogenase gene (ΔMaAdh strain) that contributes to PEA production reduced locust avoidance behavior towards the pathogen. Microplastics (MPs) are plastic fragments with particle sizes <5 mm, ubiquitously distributed in terrestrial environments. However, the negative effects of MPs, such as joint-pollution with heavy metals on soil fauna remain controversial. This study investigated survival rate, growth, reproduction, avoidance behavior, histology, biochemical assays, comet assay, qPCR, Cd content, and IBR index. We found that six types of traditional MPs (PC, PP, PVC, LDPE, PET and PS, and PLA (a biodegradable microplastics)) had no adverse effects on earthworm growth, survival and reproduction. Moreover, we found that earthworms exhibit an avoidance behavior towards PLA. Both PS and PLA can exacerbated Cd pollution, leading to loose circular muscle layer, DNA damage in coelomocytes, and impaired antioxidant system due to increased reactive oxygen species (ROS). mRNA level of HSP70 increased under joint-pollution of both PS and Cd or PLA and Cd compared to Cd treatment alone. MPs enhanced Cd accumulation in earthworms in Cd-contaminated soil. Notably, the Integrated Biomarkers Response index revealed that the toxicity of joint PLA and Cd was greater than the joint effect of PS and Cd, which might violate the original intention of biodegradable plastics having non-toxic influence on the soil fauna. Collisions between birds and aircraft cause bird mortality, economic damage, and aviation safety hazards. One proposed solution to increasing the distance at which birds detect and move away from an approaching aircraft, ultimately mitigating the probability of collision, is through onboard lighting systems. Lights in vehicles have been shown to lead to earlier reactions in some bird species but they could also generate attraction, potentially increasing the probability of collision. Using information on the visual system of the Canada goose ( Branta canadensis ), we developed light stimuli of high chromatic contrast to their eyes. We then conducted a controlled behavioral experiment ( i.e. , single-choice test) to assess the avoidance or attraction responses of Canada geese to LED lights of different wavelengths (blue, 483 nm; red, 631 nm) and pulsing frequencies (steady, pulsing at 2 Hz). Overall, Canada geese tended to avoid the blue light and move towards the red light; however, these responses depended heavily on light exposure order. At the beginning of the experiment, geese tended to avoid the red light. After further exposure the birds developed an attraction to the red light, consistent with the mere exposure effect. The response to the blue light generally followed a U-shape relationship (avoidance, attraction, avoidance) with increasing number of exposures, again consistent with the mere exposure effect, but followed by the satiation effect. Lights pulsing at 2 Hz enhanced avoidance responses under high ambient light conditions; whereas steady lights enhanced avoidance responses under dim ambient light conditions. Our results have implications for the design of lighting systems aimed at mitigating collisions between birds and human objects. LED lights in the blue portion of the spectrum are good candidates for deterrents and lights in the red portion of the spectrum may be counterproductive given the attraction effects with increasing exposure. With the widespread use of biochar for soil remediation and improvement, its effects on soil organisms are receiving increased attention. The impacts of biochar on earthworms are still poorly understood. This study aimed to assess the potential ecotoxicity of rice husk biochar (RB) and sludge biochar (SB) on earthworms during potentially toxic elements (PTEs) contaminated soil remediation. The results showed that high rates of RB addition (5% and 10%) caused earthworm mortality, but SB addition did not affect earthworm survival. When added at non-lethal rates (3%), RB and SB addition did not affect survival, weight loss, and PTEs accumulation of earthworms, while resulting in apparent avoidance behavior and oxidative stress response. Among them, RB addition was more likely to cause avoidance behavior, while SB addition had a more pronounced stress effect on earthworms. Additionally, the bacterial communities in the earthworm gut were more sensitive to biochar addition than those in soil. SB addition had a greater impact on earthworm gut bacterial communities than RB addition. The addition of RB and SB increased the abundance of Bacillaceae while decreasing the abundance of Rhizobiaceae in the earthworm gut. This change in the composition of bacterial community may impact the nitrogen cycle and organic matter degradation functions of earthworms. The study suggests that RB and SB may have different effects on earthworms during PTEs-contaminated soil remediation, depending on their properties. Repellents play a major role in reducing the risk of mosquito-borne diseases by preventing mosquito bites. The present study evaluated the mosquito-repellent activity of β-caryophyllene oxide 1% (BCO), vetiver oil 2.5% (VO), and their binary mixtures (BCO + VO (1:1), BCO + VO (2:1), BCO + VO (1:2)) against four laboratory-colonized mosquito species, Aedes aegypti (L.), Aedes albopictus (Skuse), Anopheles minimus Theobald, and Culex quinquefasciatus Say, using an excito-repellency assay system. In general, the compound mixtures produced a much stronger response in the mosquitoes than single compounds, regardless of the test conditions or species. The greatest synergetic effect was achieved with the combination of BCO + VO (1:2) in both contact and noncontact trials with An. minimus (74.07-78.18%) and Cx. quinquefasciatus (55.36-83.64%). Knockdown responses to the binary mixture of BCO + VO were observed for Ae. albopictus , An. minimus, and Cx. quinquefasciatus , in the range of 18.18-33.33%. The synergistic repellent activity of BCO and VO used in this study may support increased opportunities to develop safer alternatives to synthetic repellents for personal protection against mosquitoes.

EU member countries and the UK are currently installing numerous offshore windfarms (OWFs) in the Baltic and North Seas to achieve decarbonization of their energy systems. OWFs may have adverse effects on birds; however, estimates of collision risks and barrier effects for migratory species are notably lacking, but are essential to inform marine spatial planning. We therefore compiled an international dataset consisting of 259 migration tracks for 143 Global Positioning System-tagged Eurasian curlews (Numenius arquata arquata) from seven European countries recorded over 6 years, to assess individual response behaviors when approaching OWFs in the North and Baltic Seas at two different spatial scales (i.e. up to 3.5 km and up to 30 km distance). Generalized additive mixed models revealed a significant small-scale increase in flight altitudes, which was strongest at 0-500 m from the OWF and which was more pronounced during autumn than during spring, due to higher proportions of time spent migrating at rotor level. Furthermore, four different small-scale integrated step selection models consistently detected horizontal avoidance responses in about 70% of approaching curlews, which was strongest at approximately 450 m from the OWFs. No distinct, large-scale avoidance effects were observed on the horizontal plane, although they could possibly have been confounded by changes in flight altitudes close to land. Overall, 28.8% of the flight tracks crossed OWFs at least once during migration. Flight altitudes within the OWFs overlapped with the rotor level to a high degree in autumn (50%) but to a significantly lesser extent in spring (18.5%). Approximately 15.8% and 5.8% of the entire curlew population were estimated to be at increased risk during autumn and spring migration, respectively. Our data clearly show strong small-scale avoidance responses, which are likely to reduce collision risk, but simultaneously highlight the substantial barrier effect of OWFs for migrating species. Our understanding of the evolutionary significance of ectoparasites in natural communities is limited by a paucity of information concerning the mechanisms and heritability of resistance to this ubiquitous group of organisms. Here, we report the results of artificial selection for increasing ectoparasite resistance in replicate lines of Drosophila melanogaster derived from a field-fresh population. Resistance, as ability to avoid infestation by naturally co-occurring Gamasodes queenslandicus mites, increased significantly in response to selection and realized heritability (SE) was estimated to be 0.11 (0.0090). Deployment of energetically expensive bursts of flight from the substrate was a main mechanism of host resistance that responded to selection, aligning with previously documented metabolic costs of fly behavioral defenses. Host body size, which affects parasitism rate in some fly-mite systems, was not shifted by selection. In contrast, resistant lines expressed significant reductions in larva-to-adult survivorship with increasing toxic (ammonia) stress, identifying an environmentally modulated preadult cost of resistance. Flies selected for resistance to G. queenslandicus were also more resistant to a different mite, Macrocheles subbadius, suggesting that we documented genetic variation and a pleiotropic cost of broad-spectrum behavioral immunity against ectoparasites. OBJECTIVE: The validity of existing fear avoidance behavior patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) for concussion is unknown. This study aims to (1) identify PROMs that assess fear avoidance behavior in individuals with concussion and (2) assess the measurement properties of these PROMs. DESIGN: A systematic review of outcome measurement instruments using the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments (COSMIN) checklist. LITERATURE SEARCH: We performed a systematic search of 7 databases. STUDY SELECTION CRITERIA: Studies were included if they assessed fear avoidance behavior (eg, kinesiophobia or cogniphobia) in participants with concussion, occurring in all settings (eg, sport, falls, assaults). DATA SYNTHESIS: Methodological quality of the PROMs was assessed using the COSMIN checklist, and the certainty of the evidence was assessed using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) approach. RESULTS: We identified 40 studies assessing fear avoidance. Four studies (n = 875 participants, representing 3 PROMs) were eligible for COSMIN assessment. Content validity for all PROMs was insufficient due to extreme risk of bias. The Fear Avoidance Short Form Scale demonstrated the greatest validity: moderate-certainty evidence for sufficient structural validity and internal consistency, and low-certainty evidence for measurement invariance. CONCLUSION: Current PROMs for measuring fear avoidance behaviors in people with concussion have insufficient content validity and should be used with caution in research and clinical practice. China is one of the world's most highly-pollutant countries, and over the last few years has experienced severe and persistent haze pollution. Exploring the effects of air pollution on household energy expenditure will provide a more comprehensive and accurate understanding of the economic effects of environmental pollution. It is an important question but remains unanswered because of an estimation endogeneity. Household non-clean energy consumption would increase air pollution. A major challenge in estimates is how to accurately and cleanly identify the unwatched effect of air pollution given the endogeneity. Using the global satellite monitoring data and unique micro-household survey data, we try to construct an instrumental variable to identify the net effect of air pollution on Chinese household energy expenditure. We find that the increase in air pollution has a significantly positive effect on household energy expenditure. The results remain robust after a series of pivotal checks. Our findings highlight that stay-home-avoidance behaviors as a potential mechanism behind the energy-associated effects of air pollution on household energy expenditure. The well-educated, high-income, and urban households in southern China are more likely to engage in stay-home-avoidance behaviors. The glass catfish is a freshwater fish with electroreceptors on its body surface. In this study, we investigated its behavioral response to sinusoidal electrical stimulation with a dipole wider than its body length and the spiking patterns of its electroreceptors. We observed that sinusoidal electric stimulation with a large dipole distance elicited in the glass catfish an avoidance movement whose frequency range is frequency-dependent. The movements were prominent in the frequency range between 10-20 Hz. When the stimulation strength increased, the movements were also found in the low-frequency range. In electrophysiological experiments, periodic interspike intervals of the electroreceptors were modulated by sinusoidal electrical stimuli. The stimulation introduced irregularity in the spiking patterns. The local variability of the spike modulations was significantly higher in the frequency range of 4-40 Hz and was particularly sensitive at 20 Hz. The avoidance movements and an increase in the local variability in the spike patterns were found around 20 Hz. Our results indicate that the glass catfish avoids sinusoidal electrical stimulation in a frequency-dependent manner, and this is associated with local modulations in the spiking patterns of the electroreceptors., Competing Interests: Competing interests The authors declare no competing or financial interests., (© 2023. Transgender (trans) and gender-diverse (GD) adolescents and young adults have remained largely invisible in health research. Previous research shows worse outcomes in health indicators for trans and GD people, compared to cisgender controls. Research on the impact of sexual violence focuses on mainly cisgender female adult victims. This study assessed the impact of sexual violence on the quality of life (QoL) and mental wellbeing (GHQ-12) among trans and GD adolescents and young adults, while taking into account the possible role of gender nonconformity in sexual violence and mental wellbeing. An online, anonymous survey and interviews/focus groups were conducted between October 2021 and May 2022 in Belgium. Multiple analyses of covariance (ANCOVAs) were used to assess the associations between sexual violence, mental wellbeing, and gender nonconformity, while controlling for different background variables (gender identity, sexual orientation, age, economic vulnerability, etc.). The interviews and focus groups were used to validate associations between variables that were hypothesized as important. The quantitative sample consisted of 110 respondents between 15 and 25 years old, with 30 trans respondents (27.3%) and 80 GD respondents (72.7%). A total of 73.6% reported experiences with sexual violence over the past two years ( n = 81). The mean QoL score was 5.3/10, and the mean GHQ-12 score was 6.6/12. Sexual violence was not significantly associated with QoL ( p = 0.157) and only marginally significantly associated with GHQ-12 ( p = 0.05). Changing one's physical appearance to conform to gender norms, out of fear of getting attacked, discriminated against, or harassed was significantly associated with QoL ( p = 0.009) and GHQ-12 ( p = 0.041). The association between sexual violence and changing one's physical appearance to conform to gender norms was analyzed, to assess a possible mediation effect of sexual violence on mental wellbeing. No significant association was found ( p = 0.261). However, the interviews suggest that sexual violence is associated with changing one's physical appearance, but this association is not limited to only trans and GD victims of sexual violence. Non-victims also adjust their appearance, out of fear of future sexual victimization. Together with the high proportion of sexual violence, as well as the lower average QoL and higher average GHQ-12 scores among trans and GD adolescents and young adults, compared to general population statistics, this highlights the need for policy makers to create more inclusive environments.

Although essential and conserved, sleep is not without its challenges that must be overcome; most notably, it renders animals vulnerable to threats in the environment. Infection and injury increase sleep demand, which dampens sensory responsiveness to stimuli, including those responsible for the initial insult. Stress-induced sleep in Caenorhabditis elegans occurs in response to cellular damage following noxious exposures the animals attempted to avoid. Here, we describe a G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) encoded by npr-38, which is required for stress-related responses including avoidance, sleep, and arousal. Overexpression of npr-38 shortens the avoidance phase and causes animals to initiate movement quiescence and arouse early. npr-38 functions in the ADL sensory neurons, which express neuropeptides encoded by nlp-50, also required for movement quiescence. npr-38 regulates arousal by acting on the DVA and RIS interneurons. Objective : The aim of this study was to investigate the preliminary validity of two novel scales, the Fear of Asthma Symptoms scale (FAS) and the Asthma Behavior Checklist (ABC). Methods : Using cross-sectional design, data was collected online from 188 adult participants (Age 18-71 years) with a diagnosis of asthma and self-reported anxiety related to asthma, recruited through social media. Confirmatory factor analysis, internal consistency and test-retest reliability were ascertained to address validity. Results : The confirmatory factor analysis demonstrated convergent validity for both the FAS (average variance extracted; AVE=.57) and the item-reduced ABC-8 (AVE=.61) as well as divergent validity for both scales. Both scales demonstrated high internal consistency (FAS: α = 0.94; ABC-8: α = 0.92). Test-retest reliability assessed after 1 week was good (FAS: r =.85; ABC-8: r =.88). Conclusions : We observed promising psychometric properties of the FAS and the ABC-8. The two novel scales could be useful to identify excessive fear and avoidance in patients with asthma and to investigate putative mechanisms in clinical research on anxiety related to asthma. Further evaluation of psychometric properties in independent samples are needed.

Rationale: Balancing approach of positive and avoidance of negative stimuli is essential when faced with approach-avoidance conflicts, e.g., situations with both positive and negative outcomes. This balance is disturbed in several mental disorders, e.g., excessive avoidance in anxiety disorders, and heightened approach in substance use disorders. Since stress is assumed to impact these disorders' etiology and maintenance, it seems crucial to understand how stress influences behavior in approach-avoidance conflicts. Indeed, some studies suggested altered approach-avoidance behavior under acute stress, but the mechanism underlying these effects is unknown., Objectives: Investigate how the pharmacological manipulation of major stress mediators (cortisol and noradrenaline) influences task-based approach-avoidance conflict behavior in healthy individuals., Methods: Ninety-six participants (48 women, 48 men) received either 20mg hydrocortisone, 20mg yohimbine, both, or placebo before performing a task targeting foraging under predation in a fully crossed double-blind between-subject design. Moreover, we investigated effects of gender and endogenous testosterone and estradiol levels on approach-avoidance behavior., Results: While biological stress markers (cortisol concentration, alpha amylase activity) indicated successful pharmacological manipulation, behavior in approach-avoidance conflicts was not affected as expected. Although yohimbine administration affected risky foraging latency under predation, we found no main effect of hydrocortisone or their interaction on behavior. In contrast, we found gender differences for almost all behavioral outcome measures, which might be explained by differences in endogenous testosterone levels., Conclusions: The investigated major stress mediators were not sufficient to imitate previously shown stress effects on approach-avoidance conflict behavior. Background: Rodents utilize chemical cues to recognize and avoid other conspecifics infected with pathogens. Infection with pathogens and acute inflammation alter the repertoire and signature of olfactory stimuli emitted by a sick individual. These cues are recognized by healthy conspecifics via the vomeronasal or accessory olfactory system, triggering an innate form of avoidance behavior. However, the molecular identity of the sensory neurons and the higher neural circuits involved in the detection of sick conspecifics remain poorly understood., Results: We employed mice that are in an acute state of inflammation induced by systemic administration of lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Through conditional knockout of the G-protein Gαi2 and deletion of other key sensory transduction molecules (Trpc2 and a cluster of 16 vomeronasal type 1 receptors), in combination with behavioral testing, subcellular Ca 2+ imaging, and pS6 and c-Fos neuronal activity mapping in freely behaving mice, we show that the Gαi2 + vomeronasal subsystem is required for the detection and avoidance of LPS-treated mice. The active components underlying this avoidance are contained in urine whereas feces extract and two selected bile acids, although detected in a Gαi2-dependent manner, failed to evoke avoidance behavior. Our analyses of dendritic Ca 2+ responses in vomeronasal sensory neurons provide insight into the discrimination capabilities of these neurons for urine fractions from LPS-treated mice, and how this discrimination depends on Gαi2. We observed Gαi2-dependent stimulation of multiple brain areas including medial amygdala, ventromedial hypothalamus, and periaqueductal grey. We also identified the lateral habenula, a brain region implicated in negative reward prediction in aversive learning, as a previously unknown target involved in these tasks., Conclusions: Our physiological and behavioral analyses indicate that the sensing and avoidance of LPS-treated sick conspecifics depend on the Gαi2 vomeronasal subsystem. Avoiding activities posing bodily threat is adaptive. However, spreading of avoidance to safe activities may cause functional disability in people with chronic pain. We investigated whether costly pain-related avoidance would generalize from one activity to another on the basis of real-life categorical knowledge in 40 pain-free people (30 female; mean age = 25 years; university students and public of Maastricht, The Netherlands). In a computer task, participants moved a joystick to complete activities from two categories (gardening and cleaning). During activities from the avoidance category, pain could be avoided at the cost of task efficiency by deviating from a short, pain-associated joystick movement. Activities from the safe category were never painful. Subsequently, we tested generalization of avoidance to novel pain-free activities from both categories. Participants generalized avoidance to novel activities from the avoidance category despite the novel activities not being paired with pain and despite avoidance costs, suggesting that costly (pain-related) avoidance generalizes from one activity to another on the basis of category knowledge and can thus be wide reaching, creating detrimental consequences.

Understanding the mechanisms responsible for anxiety disorders is a major challenge. Avoidance behavior is an essential feature of anxiety disorders. The two-way avoidance test is a preclinical model with two distinct subpopulations-the good and poor performers-based on the number of avoidance responses presented during testing. It is believed that the habenula subnuclei could be important for the elaboration of avoidance response with a distinct pattern of activation and neuroinflammation. The present study aimed to shed light on the habenula subnuclei signature in avoidance behavior, evaluating the pattern of neuronal activation using FOS expression and astrocyte density using GFAP immunoreactivity, and comparing control, good and poor performers. Our results showed that good performers had a decrease in FOS immunoreactivity (IR) in the superior part of the medial division of habenula (MHbS) and an increase in the marginal part of the lateral subdivision of lateral habenula (LHbLMg). Poor performers showed an increase in FOS in the basal part of the lateral subdivision of lateral habenula (LHbLB). Considering the astroglial immunoreactivity, the poor performers showed an increase in GFAP-IR in the inferior portion of the medial complex (MHbl), while the good performers showed a decrease in the oval part of the lateral part of the lateral complex (LHbLO) in comparison with the other groups. Taken together, our data suggest that specific subdivisions of the MHb and LHb have different activation patterns and astroglial immunoreactivity in good and poor performers. This study could contribute to understanding the neurobiological mechanisms responsible for anxiety disorders.

Avoiding pain-associated activities can prevent tissue damage. However, when avoidance spreads excessively (or overgeneralizes) to safe activities, it may culminate into chronic pain disability. Gaining insight into ways to reduce overgeneralization is therefore crucial. An important factor to consider in this is relief, as it reinforces avoidance behavior and therefore may be pivotal in making avoidance persist. The current study investigated whether experimentally induced positive affect can reduce generalization of pain-related avoidance and relief. We used a conditioning task in which participants (N = 50) learned that certain stimuli were followed by pain, while another was not. Subsequently, they learned an avoidance response that effectively omitted pain with one stimulus, but was ineffective with another. Next, one group of participants performed an exercise to induce positive affect, while another group performed a control exercise. During the critical generalization test, novel stimuli that were perceptually similar to the original stimuli were presented. Results showed that both avoidance and relief generalized to novel stimuli, thus replicating previous work. Physiological stress represents a drastic change of internal state and can drive avoidance behavior, but the neural circuits are incompletely defined. Here, we characterize a sensory-interneuron circuit for mitochondrial stress-induced avoidance behavior in C. elegans. The olfactory sensory neurons and the AIY interneuron are essential, with the olfactory neurons acting upstream of AIY. Unlike pathogen avoidance, stress-induced avoidance does not require AIB, AIZ or RIA interneurons. Ablation or inhibition of the head motor neurons SMDD/V alters the worm's locomotion and reduces avoidance. Objectives: Currently, there is a lack of research on whether people will take action to avoid the harm of air pollution and the heterogeneous behavior of different groups. The goal of this paper is to examine the effects of air pollution on the resulting differential effects on newborns and the timing of pregnancy., Methods: Based on a survey of newborns in a total of 32 hospitals in 12 cities across China in 2011, and after matching with city-level air pollution data, a multiple regression statistical method is then used to examine how the pollution level in a certain period is related to the number of conceptions in that certain period, after controlling for region and season fixed effects., Results: We first demonstrate that exposure to air pollution during pregnancy is associated with a significant increase in adverse birth outcomes. Most importantly, the empirical results show that the number of conceptions decreased significantly during periods of severe air pollution., Conclusion: Evidence suggests that air pollution may be causing some families to delay conception to reduce the possible adverse impact on neonatal outcomes. The nasal epithelium houses a population of solitary chemosensory cells (SCCs). SCCs express bitter taste receptors and taste transduction signaling components and are innervated by peptidergic trigeminal polymodal nociceptive nerve fibers. Thus, nasal SCCs respond to bitter compounds, including bacterial metabolites, and these reactions evoke protective respiratory reflexes and innate immune and inflammatory responses. We tested whether SCCs are implicated in aversive behavior to specific inhaled nebulized irritants using a custom-built dual-chamber forced-choice device. The behavior of mice was recorded and analyzed for the time spent in each chamber. Wild-type (WT) mice exhibited an aversion to 10 mm denatonium benzoate (Den) or cycloheximide and spent more time in the control (saline) chamber. The SCC-pathway knock-out (KO) mice did not exhibit such an aversion response. The bitter avoidance behavior of WT mice was positively correlated with the concentration increase of Den and the number of exposures. Bitter-ageusic P2X2/3 double KO mice similarly showed an avoidance response to nebulized Den, excluding the taste system's involvement and pointing to an SCC-mediated major contributor to the aversive response. Interestingly, SCC-pathway KO mice showed an attraction to higher Den concentrations; however, chemical ablation of the olfactory epithelium eliminated this attraction attributed to the smell of Den. These results demonstrate that activation of SCCs leads to a rapid aversive response to certain classes of irritants with olfaction, but not gustation, contributing to the avoidance behavior during subsequent irritant exposures. We estimate the economic impacts of COVID-19 in the U.S. using a disaster economic consequence analysis framework implemented by a dynamic computable general equilibrium (CGE) model. This facilitates identification of relative influences of several causal factors as "shocks" to the model, including mandatory business closures, disease spread trajectories, behavioral responses, resilience, pent-up demand, and government stimulus packages. The analysis is grounded in primary data on avoidance behavior and healthcare parameters. Pedestrian avoidance behavior often occurs in underground public spaces that connect urban rail transit and commercial complexes. This study proposes a co-monitoring method based on eye movement and electroencephalogram (EEG) to study pedestrian avoidance behavior in a real environment, taking the underground public space of the commercial complex of the Luoxiong Road railway station in Wuhan City as an experimental site. It is found that pedestrian avoidance behavior is influenced by both personal and environmental factors. The pedestrian avoidance behavior is a comprehensive response to the evaded person and the current environment. The personal factors mainly affect the pedestrian avoidance mode, while the environmental factors mainly affect the frequency of avoidance behavior. Avoidance patterns are related to the tendency of Chinese pedestrians to walk right, and the frequency of avoidance behavior is related to the complexity of the intersection of pedestrian walking routes within the environment, so avoidance behavior can be reduced by using spaces with good spatial connectivity in the design of underground public spaces. Although biochar is a promising soil amendment, its characteristics change owing to its aging in soil. Studies have shown that some aged biochar is hazardous to plants and soil microbiota. Earthworms are well-known soil ecosystem engineers; nevertheless, the toxic effects of aged biochar on them (vermitoxicity) are yet unknown, and it is necessary to explore the potential risk factors. Here, a series of soil culture experiments were conducted to systematically examine the vermitoxicity of aged biochar at various levels utilizing the earthworm Eisenia fetida and corncob biochar.. Acute toxicity bioassays were also used to evaluate several potential harm factors utilizing modified aged biochar/leaching solutions. The findings showed that both fresh and aged biochar might have adverse effects on earthworms, and that aged biochar was more toxic than fresh biochar with LC 50 s reduced to 6.89%. Specifically, aged biochar caused earthworm death, growth inhibition with a maximum of 36.6%, and avoidance with 100% avoidance at the application rates of 2% at the individual-behavioral level. At the cellular and physiological-biochemical levels, aged biochar damaged coelomocyte lysosomal membrane stability, disrupted antioxidant enzyme activities, and improved the malondialdehyde (MDA) content in earthworms. Heat-treated and pH-modified aged biochar exhibited less acute toxicity on earthworms than aged biochar, whereas aqueous and acetone extracts showed weak vermitoxicity. As a result, earthworms may be harmed by volatile organic compounds (VOCs), an improper pH, and aqueous and acetone extracts. Additionally, the range of neural red retention times (NRRTs) was reviewed as ∼20-70 min mostly. This study, as far as we know, is the first to evaluate the vermitoxicity of aged biochar and its potential damage factors. Background: Among different psychological predictors of outcome in low back pain (LBP) adults, the negative influence of fear-avoidance beliefs in physical activity is an area of research attention. However, there is a lack of evidence on the burden of fear avoidance about physical activity among chronic LBP adults in Ethiopia., Objective: To describe fear-avoidance beliefs about physical activity and explore its association with socio-demographic and clinical factors among low back pain patients attending physiotherapy treatment in 3 Amhara regional comprehensive hospitals., Methods: A multi-center cross-sectional study was conducted and adults with chronic LBP (n = 263) participated. Data were collected by face-to-face interview using the modified Fear-Avoidance Belief Questionnaire about Physical Activity (mFABQ-PA) tool. Multivariable logistic regression at a p-value <0.05 significance level was used to identify predictors of fear-avoidance beliefs about physical activity., Results: Among the 263 participants, 113 subjects (43%, 95% CI (36.9-49.0)) reported a higher cut-off (>15) mFABQ-PA. The logistic regression model demonstrated that LBP adults with a higher mFABQ-PA score were more likely to be urban residents (AOR 2.75, 95% CI (1.32, 5.88)), and ADL-related LBP (AOR 1.97 95% CI (1.18, 3.29)). The clinical-specific factor indicative of a higher cut-off score of mFABQ-PA was using analgesic medications (AOR 2.00, 95% CI (1.19, 3.37)). The model fit was 0.21 and 0.11 (R 2 = Nagelkerke's, Cox & snell respectively)., Conclusion: High fear avoidance beliefs about physical activity in adults with low back pain were found and associated with residence, work, and medication intake. COVID-19 has exposed university students to high-stress situations, and the percentage of individuals with depressive symptoms was high during the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, subthreshold depression carries a risk for the subsequent development of major depressive disorder (MDD). During the COVID-19 pandemic, we examined whether differences exist between university students who deteriorated from subthreshold depression to MDD and those who remained stable or improved. Four hundred seventeen participants completed all the measures twice over a one-year interval. One hundred twenty-three participants met the criteria for subthreshold depression at Time 1. One year later, 42 participants no longer met the criteria for subthreshold depression, 68 participants maintained the criteria for subthreshold depression, and 13 participants met the criteria for MDD. We conducted two-way repeated measures ANOVA to examine the differences between those who deteriorated from subthreshold depression to MDD and those who did not. The study results suggest that avoidance behavior is associated with the development of MDD from subthreshold depression. Additionally, the study showed that experiencing isolation relates to MDD onset. Therefore, we should monitor avoidance behavior and isolation in pandemic conditions. Consequently, attention to avoidance behavior and isolation may be important; however, further research is required.

Coal fly ash is an industrial waste product generated by coal fired powerplants which has been shown to contain elevated concentrations of several toxic trace metals. When stored in landfills or other repositories, these trace metals can enter nearby surface waters via a number of routes including leaching or runoff. Our study examined 1) the presence and concentration of eleven trace elements in a range of lab-created coal ash leachate solutions at neutral pH using ICP-OES, 2) the physiological effects of these leachate solutions on a freshwater gastropod (Planorbella duryi), and 3) the ability of these trace metals to bioaccumulate in the tissues of exposed individuals. As, Cd, Cu, Mg, Mn, and Pb were detected in solutions at increasing concentrations concurrent with ash concentration. Exposure to leachates caused significant delays in embryonic development, reduced juvenile shell growth, decreases in egg and clutch production, and the display of avoidance behaviors. Tissues of exposed snails contained elevated concentrations of As, Cd, Cu, and Cr, with bioconcentration factors 177,550 times higher in cadmium and 85,468 times higher in arsenic in the highest treatment compared to control organisms.
