Due to variations in chemical composition and production processes, homonymous austenitic stainless steels can differ significantly regarding their initial microstructure, metastability, and thus, their fatigue behavior. Microstructural investigations and fatigue tests have been performed in order to evaluate this aspect. Three different batches and production forms of nominally one type of steel AISI 347 were investigated under monotonic tensile tests and cyclic loading under total strain and stress control in low and high cycle fatigue regimes, respectively. The deformation induced α'-martensite formation was investigated globally by means of in situ magnetic measurements and locally using optical light microscopy of color etching of micrographs. The investigation showed that the chemical composition and the different production processes influence the material behavior. In fatigue tests, a higher metastability and thus a higher level of deformation induced α'-martensite pronounced cyclic hardening, resulting in significantly greater endurable stresses in total strain-controlled tests and an increase in fatigue life in stress-controlled tests. For applications of non-destructive-testing, detailed knowledge of a component's metastability is required. In less metastable batches and for lower stress levels, α'-martensite primarily formed at the plasticization zone of a crack. Furthermore, the formation and nucleation points of α'-martensite were highly dependent on grain size and the presence of δ-ferrite. This study provides valuable insights into the different material behavior of three different batches with the same designation, i.e., AISI 347, due to different manufacturing processes and differences in the chemical composition, metastability, and microstructure.

The application possibilities of austenitic stainless steels in high friction, abrasion, and sliding wear conditions are limited by their inadequate hardness and tribological characteristics. In order to improve these properties, the thermochemical treatment of their surface by plasma nitriding is suitable. This article is focused on the corrosion resistance of conventionally plasma-nitrided AISI 304 stainless steel (530 °C, 24 h) in 0.05 M and 0.5 M sodium chloride solutions at room temperature (20 ± 3 °C), tested by potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy are used for nitrided layer characterization. The experiment results confirmed the plasma-nitrided layer formation of increased micro-hardness related to the presence of Cr 2 N chromium nitrides and higher surface roughness compared to the as-received state. Both of the performed independent electrochemical corrosion tests point to a significant reduction in corrosion resistance after the performed plasma nitriding, even in a solution with a very low chloride concentration (0.05 mol/L).

The main objective of this work was to propose and evaluate a methodology for shielding-gas selection in additive manufacturing assisted by wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) with an austenitic stainless steel as feedstock. To validate the proposed methodology, the impact of multi-component gases was valued using three different Ar-based blends recommended as shielding gas for GMA (gas metal arc) of the target material, using CMT (cold metal transfer) as the process version. This assessment considered features that potentially affect the building of the case study of thin walls, such as metal transfer regularity, deposition time, and geometrical and metallurgical characteristics. Different settings of wire-feed speeds were conceived to maintain a similar mean current (first constraint for comparison's sake) among the three gas blends. This approach implied different mean wire-feed speeds and simultaneously forced a change in the deposition speed to maintain the same amount of material deposited per unit of length (second comparison constraint). The composition of the gases affects the operational performance of the shielding gases. It was concluded that by following this methodology, shielding-gas selection decision-making is possible based on the perceived characteristics of the different commercial blends.

In the present research, microstructure, texture, roughness, hardness, and electrochemical behavior of AISI 316L austenitic stainless steel before and after shot peening were studied to elucidate the effect of conventional and severe shot peening (CSP and SSP) processes. After the shot peening, the fraction of strain-induced martensite (SIM) and mechanical twins (MTs) in the sub-surface layer was increased. The fraction of SIM and MTs in the SSP sample was higher than in the CSP sample. The XRD patterns indicated that the SSP sample had a higher peak broadening compared to the CSP sample. In the CSP and SSP samples, a gradient microstructure was formed along the depth direction. The microstructure of the topmost layer of the CSP and SSP samples exhibited numerous ultrafine grains. The grain refining during severe shot peening was faster because of the accumulation of more strain. The CSP and SSP samples revealed a gradient distribution of elements. After the SSP, the intensity of ⟨110⟩‖ED fiber texture decreased from 12.7 to 11.6 × R and the average intensity of ⟨100⟩‖ED fiber texture increased from 1.7 to 2.0 × R, respectively, compared to the CSP sample. The surface roughness of the SSP sample (Rq = 73.6 nm and Ra = 45.2 nm) was lower than that of the CSP sample which represented the roughness decreased with surface coverage increasing from 100 % to 1500 %. Also, the wettability increased after the conventional and severe shot peening processes. In addition, the microhardness of the CSP and SSP samples showed a gradient distribution. The CSP sample had the lowest corrosion current density (0.13 μA/cm 2 ) whereas the NP (non-peened) sample exhibited the highest current density (0.65 μA/cm 2 ). The presence of ⟨100⟩-oriented grains in both CSP and SSP samples led to the higher corrosion resistance of shot-peened steels compared to the NP sample. The presence of favorable texture with higher intensity in the CSP sample was responsible for the higher corrosion resistance of the CSP sample compared to the SSP sample. Al 2 O 3 -forming austenitic steel (AFA steel) is an important candidate material for advanced reactor core components due to its excellent corrosion resistance and high temperature strength. Al is a strong ferrite-forming element. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the Ni content to stabilize austenite. Ni is expensive and highly active, and so increasing the Ni content not only increases the costs but also damages the radiation resistance. Mn is a low-cost austenitic stable element. Its substitution for Ni will not only help to improve the irradiation resistance of austenitic steel, but also reduce the cost. In order to explore the feasibility of Mn-substituted Ni-stabilized austenite in AFA steel, this paper summarized the research progress of Mn-added AFA steels, whilst the research status of traditional Mn-added austenitic steels are also referred to and compared herein. The effect of the addition of Mn on the microstructure and properties of AFA steel was analyzed. The results show that Mn can promote the precipitation of the M 23 C 6 phase and inhibit the precipitation of the B2-NiAl phase and secondary NbC phase. With the increase in Mn content, the strength of AFA steel at room temperature and high temperature decreased slightly, the room temperature elongation increased slightly, while the high temperature elongation and creep resistance decreased obviously. In addition, for austenitic steel free of Al, the addition of Mn will destroy the oxide layer of Cr 2 O 3 , which will decrease the oxidation resistance of the steel. But the preliminary study shows that Mn has little effect on the Al 2 O 3 oxide layer. It is worth studying the effect of Mn-substituted Ni on the oxidation resistance of AFA steel. In summary, more efforts are necessary to investigate the optimal Mn content to balance the advantages and disadvantages of introducing Mn instead of Ni.

Low-temperature plasma nitriding of austenitic stainless steel can ensure that its corrosion resistance does not deteriorate, improving surface hardness and wear performance. Nevertheless, it requires a longer processing time. The hollow cathode discharge effect helps increase the plasma density quickly while radiatively heating the workpiece. This work is based on the hollow cathode discharge effect to perform a rapid nitriding strengthening treatment on AISI 304 stainless steels. The experiments were conducted at three different temperatures (450, 475, and 500 °C) for 1 h in an ammonia atmosphere. The samples were characterized using various techniques, including SEM, AFM, XPS, XRD, and micro-hardness measurement. Potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy methods were employed to assess the electrochemical behavior of the different samples in a 3.5% NaCl solution. The finding suggests that rapid hollow cathode plasma nitriding can enhance the hardness, wear resistance, and corrosion properties of AISI 304 stainless steel.

Corrosion product films (CPFs) have significant effects on hydrogen permeation and the corrosion process at the crack tip. This paper established a two-dimensional calculation model to simulate the formation of CPFs at the crack tip and its effects on the crack tip stress status and hydrogen diffusion. The CPFs were simplified as a single-layer structure composed of Fe 2 O 3 , the effective CPFs boundary was modeled by the diffusion of oxygen, and the CPF-induced stress was modeled by hygroscopic expansion. The simulation was conducted with two stages; the first stage was to simulate the formation of CPFs formation and its effects on the crack tip stress status, while the second stage focused on the hydrogen diffusion with and without CPF formation under different external tensile loads. The results indicate that the highest compressive stress induced by the formation of CPFs is located at 50~60° of the crack contour and dramatically weakens the crack tip tensile stress at low-stress status. The CPFs can inhibit the hydrogen permeation into the crack tip, and the hydrostatic pressure effects on the redistribution of the permeated hydrogen are significant under larger external load conditions.

As the fourth paradigm of materials research and development, the materials genome paradigm can significantly improve the efficiency of research and development for austenitic stainless steel. In this study, by collecting experimental data of austenitic stainless steel, the chemical composition of austenitic stainless steel is optimized by machine learning and a genetic algorithm, so that the production cost is reduced, and the research and development of new steel grades is accelerated without reducing the mechanical properties. Specifically, four machine learning prediction models were established for different mechanical properties, with the gradient boosting regression (gbr) algorithm demonstrating superior prediction accuracy compared to other commonly used machine learning algorithms. Bayesian optimization was then employed to optimize the hyperparameters in the gbr algorithm, resulting in the identification of the optimal combination of hyperparameters. The mechanical properties prediction model established at this stage had good prediction accuracy on the test set (yield strength: R 2 = 0.88, MAE = 4.89 MPa; ultimate tensile strength: R 2 = 0.99, MAE = 2.65 MPa; elongation: R 2 = 0.84, MAE = 1.42%; reduction in area: R 2 = 0.88, MAE = 1.39%). Moreover, feature importance and Shapley Additive Explanation (SHAP) values were utilized to analyze the interpretability of the performance prediction models and to assess how the features influence the overall performance. Finally, the NSGA-III algorithm was used to simultaneously maximize the mechanical property prediction models within the search space, thereby obtaining the corresponding non-dominated solution set of chemical composition and achieving the optimization of austenitic stainless-steel compositions.

Austenitic stainless steel D9 is a candidate for Generation IV nuclear reactor structural materials due to its enhanced irradiation tolerance and high-temperature creep strength compared to conventional 300-series stainless steels. But, like other austenitic steels, D9 is susceptible to irradiation-induced clustering of Ni and Si, the mechanism for which is not well understood. This study utilizes atom probe tomography (APT) to characterize the chemistry and morphology of Ni-Si nanoclusters in D9 following neutron or proton irradiation to doses ranging from 5-9 displacements per atom (dpa) and temperatures ranging from 430-683 °C. Nanoclusters form only after neutron irradiation and exhibit classical coarsening with increasing dose and temperature. The nanoclusters have Ni 3 Si stoichiometry in a Ni core-Si shell structure. This core-shell structure provides insight into a potentially unique nucleation and growth mechanism-nanocluster cores may nucleate through local, spinodal-like compositional fluctuations in Ni, with subsequent growth driven by rapid Si diffusion. This study underscores how APT can shed light on an unusual irradiation-induced nanocluster nucleation mechanism active in the ubiquitous class of austenitic stainless steels.

The article discusses the practical application of the method of electromagnetic non-destructive investigation of austenitic materials. To identify and evaluate deep artificial defects, the sweep-frequency eddy current method with harmonic excitation is used. The objects of interest are the surface electric-discharged machined notches, with a defined geometry, fabricated in a plate with a thickness of 30 mm. An innovative eddy current probe with a separate excitation and detection circuit is used for the investigation. The achieved results clearly demonstrate the robustness and potential of the method, especially for deep defects in thick material. By using the fifth probe in connection with the frequency sweeping of eddy currents, it is possible to reliably detect artificial defects up to 24 ± 0.5 mm deep by using low-frequency excitation signals. An important fact is that the measuring probe does not have to be placed directly above the examined defect. The experimental results achieved are presented and discussed in this paper. The conducted study can serve, for example, as an input database of defect signals with a defined geometry to increase the convergence of learning networks and for the prediction of the geometry of real (fatigue and stress-corrosion) defects.

Additive manufacturing of austenitic stainless steel results in an unconventional hierarchical microstructure. This hierarchical microstructure was investigated in detail in the as-built condition. The hierarchical microstructure consists of elongated austenite grains and melt pool fusion boundaries with a spherical cap morphology at the largest length scale. At a smaller length scale elongated columnar cell structures exist with elemental segregation at the cell walls. The cells were found not to be a misorientation structure in themselves as often noted, but rather groups of cells with a specific orientation, which are collected in 3-5 μm domains. At even smaller length scales, amorphous spherical silicates are found along with a high dislocation density along cell walls. The thermal stability of the unconventional features as melt pool boundaries, elongated austenite grains, cell domains, cell structure, amorphous precipitates was investigated systematically in the temperature range 400-1100 °C. The dislocation network forming the cell boundaries dissolves gradually and remains thermally stable up to about 800 °C. The melt pool boundaries are more thermally stable and dissolve above 900 °C. The elongated austenite grains and crystallographic texture are fully stable within the investigated temperature range. The cell domains appear to be pinned by precipitation as the cellular structure is dissolved and gradually straighten and resemble regular low angle grain boundaries. The amorphous silicates act as heterogeneous nucleation sites for the formation of σ-phase in the temperature range 700-800 °C, while at higher treatment temperatures these silicates are replaced by large, oblong Si-Mn oxides and small, round Mn-Cr oxides., Competing Interests: The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper, (© 2023 The Authors. The present work focusses on the research of the plastic deformation accumulated effect obtained after two different plastic deformation treatments, over the fatigue life of AISI 304 austenitic stainless steel. The research is focused on ball burnishing as a finishing process to form specific, so-called "regular micro-reliefs" (RMRs) on a pre-rolled stainless-steel sheet. RMRs are formed using a CNC (Computerized Numerically Controlled) milling machine and toolpaths with the shortest unfolded length, generated by an improved algorithm, based on the Euclidean Distance calculation. The effect of the predominant tool trajectory direction during the ball burnishing process (which can be coinciding or transverse with the rolling direction), the magnitude of applied deforming force, and feed-rate is subjected to evaluation using Bayesian rule analyses of experimentally obtained results for the fatigue life of AISI 304 steel. The obtained results give us reason to conclude that the fatigue life of researched steel is increased when directions of pre-rolled plastic deformation and the tool movement during ball burnishing are coincident. It also been found that the magnitude of deforming force has a stronger impact over the fatigue life, than the feed-rate of the ball tool.

The influence of strain rate in the interval of (10 -5 -10 -3 ) 1/s on room temperature tensile behavior, dislocation arrangement, deformation mechanisms, and fracture of austenitic stainless steel AISI 316L electrochemically charged with hydrogen was investigated. Independently on strain rate, hydrogen charging provides the increase in the yield strength of the specimens due to a solid solution hardening of austenite, but it slightly influences deformation behavior and strain hardening of the steel. Simultaneously, hydrogen charging assists surface embrittlement of the specimens during straining and reduces an elongation to failure, which both are strain rate-dependent parameters. Hydrogen embrittlement index decreases with increase in strain rate, which testifies the importance of hydrogen transport with dislocations during plastic deformation. The stress-relaxation tests directly confirm the hydrogen-enhanced increase in the dislocation dynamics at low strain rates. The interaction of the hydrogen atoms with dislocations and hydrogen-associated plastic flow are discussed.

This article presents the comprehensive mechanical testing data archive from a neutron irradiation campaign of nuclear structural alloys fabricated by powder metallurgy with hot isostatic pressing (PM-HIP). The irradiation campaign was designed to facilitate a direct comparison of PM-HIP to conventional casting or forging. Five common nuclear structural alloys were included in the campaign: 316L stainless steel, SA508 pressure vessel steel, Grade 91 ferritic steel, and Ni-base alloys 625 and 690. Irradiations were carried out in the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) to target doses of 1 and 3 displacements per atom (dpa) at target temperatures of 300 and 400 °C. This article contains the data collected from post-irradiation uniaxial tensile tests following ASTM E8 specifications, fractography of these tensile bars, and nanoindentation. In this work, a series of multicomponent alloys (CoCrFeNi, CoCrNi, and CoNiV) were laser welded with 304 stainless steel (304ss), and detailed comparisons on microstructural characteristics and mechanical properties were conducted for dissimilar laser welded joints. It is revealed that all of the dissimilar laser welded samples possessed defect-free joints and the corresponding fusion zone consisting of fcc single-phase showed homogeneous element distribution accompanied by a narrow element gradient in the vicinity of the fusion zone boundary. After laser welding with identical welding parameters, equiaxed grain was observed on the side of multicomponent alloy, while coarse columnar grain was obtained on the side of 304ss. Especially, the columnar grains of the fusion zone on the side of 304ss disclosed preferential <001> growth direction in the CoCrFeNi/304ss and CoCrNi/304ss welded joints. Furthermore, all of the dissimilar laser welded joints were fractured in the fusion zone, attributing to the drastic loss of strength in the fusion zone with coarsened grain. It is worth noting that a special lamellar structure that merged by dimples was found in the fracture surface of the CoNiV/304ss joint, closely related to the existence of the V-enriched region. Finally, a high strength-ductile synergy can be achieved by laser welding CoNiV alloy to 304ss, which showed a yield strength of 338 MPa, ultimate tensile strength of 686 MPa, and total elongation of 28.9%. These excellent mechanical properties prevailed in the potential of a CoNiV/304ss laser welded joint to be applied as a structural material.

The processes that control irradiation creep are dependent on the temperature and the rate of production of freely migrating point defects, affecting both the microstructure and the mechanisms of mass transport. Because of the experimental difficulties in studying irradiation creep, many different hypothetical models have been developed that either favour a dislocation slip or a mass transport mechanism. Irradiation creep mechanisms and models that are dependent on the microstructure, which are either fully or partially mechanistic in nature, are described and discussed in terms of their ability to account for the in-reactor creep behaviour of various nuclear reactor core materials. A rate theory model for creep of Zr-2.5Nb pressure tubing in CANDU reactors incorporating the as-fabricated microstructure has been developed that gives good agreement with measurements for tubes manufactured by different fabrication routes having very different microstructures. One can therefore conclude that for Zr-alloys at temperatures < 300 °C and stresses < 150 MPa, diffusional mass transport is the dominant creep mechanism. The most important microstructural parameter controlling irradiation creep for these conditions is the grain structure. Austenitic alloys follow similar microstructural dependencies as Zr-alloys, but up to higher temperature and stress ranges. The exception is that dislocation slip is dominant in austenitic alloys at temperatures < 100 °C because there are few barriers to dislocation slip at these low temperatures, which is linked to the enhanced recombination of irradiation-induced point defects.

The hydrogen embrittlement (HE) behavior of a selective laser-melted (SLM) 316L austenitic stainless steel has been investigated by hydrogen charging experiments and slow strain rate tensile tests (SSRTs) at room temperature. The results revealed that compared to the samples without H, the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and elongation (EL) of specimens were decreased from 572 MPa to 552 MPa and from 60% to 36%, respectively, after 4 h of electrochemical hydrogenation with a current density of 100 mA/cm 2 . The negative effects of hydrogen charging were more pronounced on the samples' ductility than on their strength. A quasi in situ EBSD observation proved that there was little phase transformation in the samples but an increased density of low angle grain boundaries, after 4 h H charging. After strain was applied, the surface of the H-sample displayed many hydrogen-induced cracks along the melt pool boundaries (MPBs) showing that these MPBs were the preferred areas for the gathering and transferring of hydrogen.

In situ X-ray computed tomography (X-ray CT) is used to investigate the effects of characteristic microstructural features on the pitting initiation and propagation in austenitic stainless steel specimens prepared with laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) additive manufacturing. In situ X-ray CT in probing the mechanism and kinetics of localized corrosion is demonstrated by immersing two LPBF specimens with different porosities in an aggressive ferric chloride solution for the evaluation of corrosion. X-ray CT images are acquired from the specimens after every 8 hours of immersion over an extended period of time (216 hours). Corrosion pit growth is then quantitatively analyzed with a data-constrained modeling method. The pitting growth mechanism of LPBF stainless steel is found to be different from that of conventional stainless steels. More specifically, the mechanism of corrosion pit initiation is closely correlated with the original lack of fusion porosity (LOF) distribution on the surface of the specimens and preferential pit propagation through the LOF pores inside the specimens. Pit growth kinetics are derived from pit volume changes determined through 3D data analysis. Corrosion resistance of sensitized austenitic stainless steel (SS) in chloride environments is currently the subject of numerous studies. Most of them are focused on neutral chloride solutions at room temperature and the experiments are carried out on ground stainless steels surfaces. This paper deals with the corrosion behavior of sensitized AISI 304 stainless steel in acid 1 M chloride solution (pH = 1.1) at the temperatures of 20 ± 3 °C and 50 °C. The specimens after sensitization are tested as covered by high-temperature surface oxides ("heat tinted"), and also after their chemical removal to assess the impact of the surface state on corrosion resistance. Potentiodynamic polarization (PP) and exposure immersion test are used as the independent corrosion tests. Microstructure before/after exposure immersion test is evaluated by optical microscopy (OM) and SEM. The results obtained showed that sensitization significantly conditions corrosion regardless of the removal of high-temperature oxides, and the elevated temperature mainly acts as its accelerating factor., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Investigation of the intrinsic magnetic field of austenitic biomaterial specimens after various heat-treatment processes and mechanical deformation is a matter in this study. Both heat-treatment and mechanical deformation influences are under investigation. A new approach incorporates innovative solutions with the goal to increase the resolution of gained signals in contrast to conventional methods. The proposed procedure was tested on real material specimens. A magnetic field sensor (fluxgate type) was used for this purpose. The presented results clearly show that gained signals can be increased when the appropriate probe instrumentation is used, and the characteristics are further mathematically processed.

Austenitic stainless steels are extensively used in mechanical engineering. The machined surface integrity has an essential influence on the stress corrosion cracking (SCC) performance of stainless steels. In this paper, the effects of multi-pass turning on the SCC susceptibility of AISI 304 austenitic stainless steel were investigated by correlating the SCC crack density to the machining-induced surface characteristics in terms of roughness, micro-hardness, and residual stress. In the multi-pass turning, the surface roughness and residual stress were the least after the double pass turning, and the surface micro-hardness was the maximum after the triple-pass turning. The SCC susceptibility was evaluated after SCC tests in boiling MgCl 2 solution. The results showed that the weakest SCC sensitivity was observed in double-pass turning 304 stainless steel, while the most susceptible SCC was found in triple-pass turning. Compared with the double-pass turning, the increase in SCC sensitivity of triple-pass turning was attributed to the larger roughness, higher micro-hardness and greater residual tensile stresses.

Wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is an additive manufacturing process based on the arc welding process in which wire is melted by an electric arc and deposited layer by layer. Due to the cost and rate benefits over powder-based additive manufacturing technologies and other alternative heat sources such as laser and electron beams, the process is currently receiving much attention in the industrial production sector. The gas metal arc welded (GMAW) based WAAM process provides a higher deposition rate than other methods, making it suitable for additive manufacturing. The fabrication of mild steel (G3Si1), austenitic stainless steel (SS304), and a bimetallic sample of both materials were completed successfully using the GMAW based WAAM process. The microstructure characterization of the developed sample was conducted using optical and scanning electron microscopes. The interface reveals two discrete zones of mild steel and SS304 deposits without any weld defects. The hardness profile indicates a drastic increase in hardness near the interface, which is attributed to chromium migration from the SS304. The toughness of the sample was tested based on the Charpy Impact (ASTM D6110) test. The test reveals isotropy in both directions. The tensile strength of samples deposited by the WAAM technique measured slightly higher than the standard values of weld filament. The deep hole drilling (DHD) method was used to measure the residual stresses, and it was determined that the stresses are compressive in the mild steel portion and tensile in austenitic stainless steel portion, and that they vary throughout the thickness due to variation in the cooling rate at the inner and outer surfaces.

Intergranular corrosion is one of the most important processes affecting the behaviour of austenitic stainless steels. Factors such as steel chemical composition, the degree of prior deformation and the exposure temperature affect the degree of sensitisation. AISI 316L (0% CW) steel was annealed at 650 °C for 5, 10, 30, 100, 300 and 1000 h to analyse the influence of isothermal annealing on the precipitation of secondary phases. AISI 316L steel after 40% cold working and subsequent annealing at 650 °C for 1, 1.5, 2, 5 and 10 h was investigated. Time-temperature sensitisation (TTS) diagrams were created based on corrosion test (ASTM A 262, practice A) results. In the case of AISI 316L (0% CW), M 23 C 6 , chi and sigma phases precipitated at grain boundaries, and the Laves phase was mainly inside of the grains. In the case of AISI 316L (40% CW), sigma, chi, Laves and M 23 C 6 were identified and precipitated mainly along the grain boundaries as well as on the shear bands within different annealing times. It was confirmed that the increase in the annealing time caused an increase in the amounts of secondary phases. Secondary phases in the equilibrium state were calculated using Thermo-Calc software.

Plasma electrolytic polishing (PEP) is an environment-friendly alternative to the conventional electrochemical polishing (EP), giving optimal surface properties and improved corrosion resistance with minimum energy and time consumption, which leads to both economic and environmental benefits. This paper is focused on the corrosion behavior of PEP treated AISI 316L stainless steel widely used as a biomaterial. Corrosion resistance of plasma electrolytic polished surfaces without/with chemical pretreatment (acid cleaning) is evaluated and compared with original non-treated (as received) surfaces by three independent test methods: electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization (PP), and exposure immersion test. All corrosion tests are carried out in the 0.9 wt.% NaCl solution at a temperature of 37 ± 0.5 °C to simulate the internal environment of a human body. The quality of tested surfaces is also characterized by optical microscopy and by the surface roughness parameters. The results obtained indicated high corrosion resistance of PEP treated surfaces also without chemical pretreatment, which increases the ecological benefits of PEP technology.

Austenitic stainless steel is a vital material in various industries, with excellent heat and corrosion resistance, and is widely used in high-temperature environments as a component for internal combustion engines of transportation vehicles or power plant piping. These components or structures are required to be durable against severe load conditions and oxidation damage in high-temperature environments during their service life. In this regard, in particular, oxidation damage and fatigue life are very important influencing factors, while existing studies have focused on materials and fracture behavior. In order to ensure the fatigue life of austenitic stainless steel, therefore, it is necessary to understand the characteristics of the fracture process with microstructural change including oxidation damage according to the temperature condition. In this work, low-cycle fatigue tests were performed at various temperatures to determine the oxidation damage together with the fatigue life of austenitic stainless steel containing niobium. The characteristics of oxidation damage were analyzed through microstructure observations including scanning electron microscope, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and the X-ray diffraction patterns. In addition, a unified low-cycle fatigue life model coupled with the fracture mechanism-based lifetime and the Neu-Sehitoglu model for considering the influence of damage by oxidation was proposed. After the low-cycle fatigue tests at temperatures of 200-800 °C and strain amplitudes of 0.4% and 0.5%, the accuracy of the proposed model was verified by comparing the test results with the predicted fatigue life, and the validity by using the oxidation damage parameters for Mar-M247 was confirmed through sensitivity analysis of the parameters applied in the oxidation damage model. As a result, the average thickness of the oxide layer and the penetration length of the oxide intrusion were predicted with a mean error range of 14.7% and 13%, respectively, and the low-cycle fatigue life was predicted with a ±2 factor accuracy at the measurement temperatures under all experimental conditions.

Influence of strain accumulation schedule during hot rolling, under the thermomechanical control process (TMCP) on the structure evolution and carbide transformations of Cr-Ni-Ti austenitic stainless steel, is studied. The cellular, fragmented dislocation substructure and dynamically recrystallized (DRX) structure are observed in the steel with different strain accumulation schedules. It was found that the strain accumulation schedule, especially fractionality, affects the work-hardening and softening behavior quite significantly. The role of the strain accumulation schedule on the fragmented substructure and DRX structure evolution as well as carbide transformations and the relationship between the microstructure changes due to TMCP and the mechanical properties of studied steel, involving the recent ideas of the physics of large plastic strains, are considered.

The present study aimed to discover the effect of cold swaging reduction on the bulk gradient structure formation and mechanical properties of a 316-type austenitic stainless steel. The initial rod was subjected to radial swaging until 20-95% reduction of initial rod diameter, at room temperature. According to finite element simulation, higher plastic strain was accumulated in the surface layer compared to the center region during swaging. Microstructural investigations revealed three-stage gradient structure formation in the center and edge regions of the deformed rod. Meanwhile, cold swaging resulted in the development of strong 111ǁBA, 001ǁBA, and weak 111ǁBA texture components in the center and edge, respectively. Significant tensile strengthening was observed after cold swaging. For instance, the yield strength (YS) increased from 820 MPa to 930 MPa after 40-80% reduction respectively, without the loss of ductility (δ-14%). This unique aspect of the mechanical behavior was attributed to the gradient structure of the cold swaged material and explained in detail.

This Data in Brief article presents crystallographic data collected along chloride-induced stress corrosion cracks (CISCC) in a gas tungsten arc welded (GTAW) austenitic stainless steel (AuSS) 304L. The experimental setup involved a welded stainless steel 304L coupon of dimensions 105 mm × 18.5 mm × 3 mm, loaded in a 4-point bending fixture with a maximum tensile stress of 380 MPa. The fixtured specimen was immersed in boiling magnesium chloride (MgCl 2 ) solution until a through-crack was observed on the specimen surface after 17 hours of boiling. The cross-section was subsequently polished, and 37 cracks of interest in the heat affected zone (HAZ) and weld zone (WZ) were selected for crystallographic characterization. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) based electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) was used to map the grain orientations along and surrounding each crack path. The obtained orientation imaging microscopy (OIM) datasets were post-processed using EDAX OIM V8 proprietary software to generate inverse pole figures (IPF), image quality (IQ) figures, detector signal (SEM) images, and to determine the Taylor factor and Schmid factor of mapped grains. This dataset can be used to understand CISCC crack initiation, propagation, and termination behaviors, as has been reported in the accompanying original research article. This data article providing the raw EBSD OIM datasets and processed images formatted for accessibility in future studies. The growing demand for implants has seen increasing interest in the introduction of new technologies and surface modification methods of metal biomaterials. This research aimed to produce and characterize a porous layer grown on austenitic stainless steel 316L, obtained via the anodization process near the micro-arc oxidation, i.e., low voltage micro-arc oxidation (LVMAO). The discussed layer significantly influences the properties of metallic biomedical materials. The surface topography, layer thickness, surface roughness, pore diameter, elemental composition, crystal structure, and surface wettability were assessed for all anodized layers, together with the resultant corrosion resistance. Attention was paid to the influence of the process parameters that affect the specification of the produced layer. The obtained results showed surface development and different sized pores in the modified layers, as well as an increase in corrosion resistance in the Ringer's solution.

This paper describes the influence of technological treatments (i.e., bending or welding) on the structural stability of SUPER304H austenitic steel used in reheaters and superheaters in fossil fuel power plants. Although the worldwide trend is transitioning to green power sources, the lifetime of existing power plants has to be prolonged until the transition is complete. Experimental material was tested in as-received state (straight tubes), bends, and homogeneous weld joints. Part of the specimens was solution-annealed after the technological operation. Afterwards, all the samples were thermally aged in furnace (650, 675 and 700 °C) for 7560-20,000 h. For comparison, bent specimens were placed at experimental sites on an operating powerplant for 10,000+ h. The long-term aging causes the formation of Cr-based carbides on the grain boundaries along with the Fe-Cr sigma phase. Combination of elevated temperature and residual stress accelerates formation of the sigma phase. This can be prevented by solution-annealing after bending. Mechanical properties were evaluated by Vickers hardness and tensile tests. The microstructure was observed using light optical microscopy (LOM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with the energy-dispersive X-ray detector (EDXS). Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) were used to characterize the brittle phases.

In order to study the suitability of the S-phase layers as the interlayer for Cr 2 N chromium nitride coatings, a number of composite coatings were deposited by the reactive magnetron sputtering (RMS) method on austenitic steel substrates with various initial surface conditions (as delivered and polished) and their corrosion resistance was assessed. Coatings with S-phase interlayer were deposited at three different nitrogen contents in the working atmosphere (15%, 30%, and 50%), which influenced the nitrogen concentration in the S-phase. Coatings with chromium, as a traditional interlayer to improve adhesion, and uncoated austenitic stainless steel were used as reference materials. Detailed microstructural and phase composition studies of the coatings were carried out by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optical microscopy (LM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) and were discussed in the context of results of corrosion tests carried out with the use of the potentiodynamic polarization method conducted in a 3% aqueous solution of sodium chloride (NaCl). The performed tests showed that the electrochemical potential of the S-phase/Cr 2 N composite coatings is similar to that of Cr/Cr 2 N coatings. It was also observed that the increase in the nitrogen content in the S-phase interlayer causes an increase in the polarization resistance of the S-phase/Cr 2 N composite coating. Moreover, with a higher nitrogen content in the S-phase interlayer, the polarization resistance of the S-phase/Cr 2 N coating is higher than for the Cr/Cr 2 N reference coating. All the produced composite coatings showed better corrosion properties in relation to the uncoated austenitic stainless steel.

In this work, austenitic stainless steel specimens were locally reinforced with WC particles. The reinforcements were fabricated via an ex situ technique based on powder technology. Mixtures of WC, Fe, and M0101 binder were cold-pressed to obtain powder compacts. After debinding and sintering, the porous WC-Fe inserts were fixed in a mold cavity, where they reacted with liquid metal. Microstructural analysis was conducted for characterization of the phases constituting the produced reinforcement zone and the bonding interface. The results revealed that the reinforcement is a graded material with compositional and microstructural gradients throughout its thickness. The zone nearest to the surface has a ferrous matrix with homogeneously distributed WC particles and (Fe,W,Cr) 6 C and (Fe,W,Cr) 3 C carbides, formed from the liquid metal reaction with the insert. This precipitation leads to austenite destabilization, which transforms into martensite during cooling. A vast dissolution of the WC particles occurred in the inner zones, resulting in more intense carbides formation. Cr-rich carbides ((Fe,Cr,W) 7 C 3 , and (Fe,Cr,W) 23 C 6 ) formed in the interdendritic regions of austenite; this zone is characterized by coarse dendrites of austenite and a multi-phase interdendritic network composed of carbides. An interface free of discontinuities and porosities indicates good bonding of the reinforcement zone to stainless steel.

Plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII) of nitrogen is low-temperature surface technology which enables the improvement of tribological properties without a deterioration of the corrosion behavior of austenitic stainless steels. In this paper the corrosion properties of PIII-treated AISI 316L stainless steel surfaces are evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization (PP) and exposure immersion tests (all carried out in the 0.9 wt. % NaCl solution at 37 ± 0.5 °C) and compared with a non-treated surface. Results of the three performed independent corrosion tests consistently confirmed a significant increase in the corrosion resistance after two doses of PIII nitriding.

In-situ electrochemical nanoindentation (ECNI) has been used to study the effect of hydrogen on the mechanical properties of austenitic stainless steel AISI 316L. Changing the electrode potential (via electrochemical charging) revealed the interconnected nature of the hydrogen effect on the nanomechanical properties of the stainless steel. At more positive cathodic potentials, a softening effect of hydrogen can be noticed, while significant hardening can be observed at more negative cathodic potentials. The hydrogen effects on the nanomechanical properties were analyzed in terms of the homogeneous dislocation nucleation (HDN) and the hydrogen-dislocation interactions from the energy point of view. The effects can be explained with the framework of the defactant theory and the hydrogen-enhanced localized plasticity (HELP) mechanism.

In this study, ultra-high-strength steels, namely, cold-hardened austenitic stainless steel AISI 301 and martensitic abrasion-resistant steel AR600, as base metals (BMs) were butt-welded using a disk laser to evaluate the microstructure, mechanical properties, and effect of post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) at 250 °C of the dissimilar joints. The welding processes were conducted at different energy inputs (EIs; 50-320 J/mm). The microstructural evolution of the fusion zones (FZ) in the welded joints was examined using electron backscattering diffraction (EBSD) and laser scanning confocal microscopy. The hardness profiles across the weldments and tensile properties of the as-welded joints and the corresponding PWHT joints were measured using a microhardness tester and universal material testing equipment. The EBSD results showed that the microstructures of the welded joints were relatively similar since the microstructure of the FZ was composed of a lath martensite matrix with a small fraction of austenite. The welded structure exhibited significantly higher microhardness at the lower EIs of 50 and 100 J/mm (640 HV). However, tempered martensite was promoted at the high EI of 320 J/mm, significantly reducing the hardness of the FZ to 520 HV. The mechanical tensile properties were considerably affected by the EI of the as-welded joints. Moreover, the PWHT enhanced the tensile properties by increasing the deformation capacity due to promoting the tempered martensite in the FZ.

The features of discontinuous dynamic recrystallization (DRX) in a highly-alloyed austenitic stainless steel were studied at temperatures of 800 °C to 1100 °C. Hot deformation accompanied by DRX was characterized by an activation energy of 415 kJ/mol. The frequency of the sequential DRX cycles depended on the deformation conditions; and the largest fraction of DRX grains with small grain orientation spread below 1° was observed at a temperature of around 1000 °C and a strain rate of about 10 -3 s -1 . The following power law relationships were obtained for DRX grain size (D DRX ) and dislocation density ( ρ ) vs. temperature-compensated strain rate (Z) or peak flow stress (σ P ): D DRX ~ Z -0.25 , ρ ~ Z 0.1 , σ P ~ D DRX -0.9 , σ P ~ ρ 1.4 . The latter, i.e., σ P ~ ρ 1.4 , was valid in the flow stress range below 300 MPa and changed to σ P ~ ρ 0.5 on increasing the stress. The obtained dependencies suggest a unique power law function between the dislocation density and the DRX grain size with an exponent of -0.5.

Gradient structures in engineering materials produce an impressive synergy of strength and plasticity, thereafter, have recently attracted extensive attention in the material families. Gradient structured stainless steels (SS) were prepared by surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT) with different impacting velocities. The microstructures of the treated samples are characterized by gradient twin fraction and phase constituents. Quantitative relations of gradient microstructure with impacting time and mechanical properties are analyzed according to the observations of SEM, TEM, XRD, and tests of mechanical property. The processed SSs exhibited to be simultaneously stiff, strong, and ductile, which can be attributed to the co-operation of the different spatial distributions of multi-scaled structures. The formation of gradient twinned structure is resolved and the strengthening by gradient structure is explored.

Austenitic stainless steels are used for core internal structures in sodium-cooled fast reactors (SFRs) and light-water reactors (LWRs) because of their high strength and retained toughness after irradiation (up to 80 dpa in LWRs), unlike ferritic steels that are embrittled at low doses (<1 dpa). For fast reactors, operating temperatures vary from 400 to 550 °C for the internal structures and up to 650 °C for the fuel cladding. The internal structures of the LWRs operate at temperatures between approximately 270 and 320 °C although some parts can be hotter (more than 400 °C) because of localised nuclear heating. The ongoing operability relies on being able to understand and predict how the mechanical properties and dimensional stability change over extended periods of operation. Test reactor irradiations and power reactor operating experience over more than 50 years has resulted in the accumulation of a large amount of data from which one can assess the effects of irradiation on the properties of austenitic stainless steels. The effect of irradiation on the intrinsic mechanical properties (strength, ductility, toughness, etc.) and dimensional stability derived from in- and out-reactor (post-irradiation) measurements and tests will be described and discussed. The main observations will be assessed using radiation damage and gas production models. Rate theory models will be used to show how the microstructural changes during irradiation affect mechanical properties and dimensional stability.

The present work describes an experimental investigation of the fatigue durability of AISI 304 and AISI 316L austenitic stainless steels, which have regular reliefs (RR) of the IV-th type, formed by ball burnishing (BB) on flat surfaces, using a computer numerical control (CNC) milling center. The methodology and the equipment used for obtaining regular reliefs, along with a vibration-induced fatigue test setup, are presented and described. The results from the BB process and the fatigue life experiments of the tested austenitic stainless steels are gathered, using the approach of factorial design experiments. It was found that the presence of RR of the IV-th type do not worsen the fatigue strength of the studied steels. The Pareto, t -test and Bayesian rule techniques are used to determine the main effects and the interactions of significance between ball burnishing regime parameters. A stochastic model is derived and is used to find when the probability of obtaining the maximum fatigue life of parts made of AISI 304 or 316L reaches its maximum value. It was found that when the deforming force, the amplitude of the sinewaves and their wavenumber are set at high values, and the feed rate is set at its low value, the probability to reach maximum fatigue life for the parts made of AISI 304 or 316L is equal to 97%.

The evolution of the microstructure and deformation mechanism at different levels of plastic strain are investigated for 304 L austenitic steel with a combination of micro X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) and electron channeling contrast imaging (ECCI). A plastic strain gradient is developed along the longitudinal rolling direction in a wedge-shaped 304 L austenitic steel sample. The graded deformed microstructure includes various amounts of deformation bands, ε- and α'-martensites, and their intersections form during the plastic deformation. ECCI observations reveal several deformation mechanisms of the formation of partial dislocations, dislocations, and interactions. This study suggests geometrically necessary deformation bands (GNDBs) are introduced and stored instead of geometrically necessary dislocations (GNDs) in low stacking fault energy (SFE) materials such as austenite steels. Consequently, increasing the strain gradient leads to an increase in the geometrically necessary martensitic transformation (GNMT); this is the result of the deformation-induced martensite in these materials. In addition to the statistically stored dislocations (SSDs), GNDs are generated at the grain boundaries of the fragmented grains to preserve the continuity of the grains. Accordingly, the strain hardening of the austenite steel includes multiple interactions of the deformation bands, SSDs, GNDs, GNDBs, and GNMT. Two single track multi-layer walls with linear energy inputs (LEIs) of 219 and 590 J/mm were deposited by cold metal transfer-based wire arc additive manufacturing system. Combined with the X-ray diffraction technique, scanning electron microscope and uniaxial tensile tests, the influences of LEI and cooling rate (CR) on the microstructure evolution, mechanical properties and fracture mechanisms of the studied steel are analyzed. It is observed that the microstructures of the studied steel are mainly composed of δ-ferrite and austenite dendrites. σ phase is formed on the δferrite-austenite interface under low CR. Meanwhile, the primary dendrites' spacing decreases with the decrease in LEI or the increase in CR, and the maximal primary dendrites' spacing is 32 μm. The values of elongation to fracture roughly decline with the decrease in LEI or the increase in CR, but the variations of ultimate tensile strength and yield stress show an opposite trend. In addition, the mesoscopic damages in the studied steel under low LEI are mainly caused by the coalescence of pores. While under high LEI, the cracks are induced by the dislocations piling up around δ-ferrite.

The effects of titanium (Ti) ion-implanted doses on the chemical composition, surface roughness, mechanical properties, as well as tribological properties of 316L austenitic stainless steel are investigated in this paper. The Ti ion implantations were carried out at an energy of 40 kV and at 2 mA for different doses of 3.0 × 10 16 , 1.0 × 10 17 , 1.0 × 10 18 , and 1.7 × 10 18 ions/cm 2 . The results showed that a new phase (Cr 2 Ti) was detected, and the concentrations of Ti and C increased obviously when the dose exceeded 1.0 × 10 17 ions/cm 2 . The surface roughness can be significantly reduced after Ti ion implantation. The nano-hardness increased from 3.44 to 5.21 GPa at a Ti ion-implanted dose increase up to 1.0 × 10 18 ions/cm 2 . The friction coefficient decreased from 0.78 for un-implanted samples to 0.68 for a sample at the dose of 1.7 × 10 18 ions/cm 2 . The wear rate was slightly improved when the sample implanted Ti ion at a dose of 1.0 × 10 18 ions/cm 2 . Adhesive wear and oxidation wear are the main wear mechanisms, and a slightly abrasive wear is observed during sliding. Oxidation wear was improved significantly as the implantation dose increased.

The steam oxidation behavior of three heterogeneous HR3C alloys was investigated at 650 °C comparatively. After a long-term oxidation process for 1000 h, the results demonstrated that the commercial HR3C alloy already exhibited a high oxidation resistance. However, the spallation resistance of the oxide scale was low during the initial oxidation period. The addition of a moderate amount of Nb into the alloy (1#HR3C) increased the oxidation resistance of the alloy. In addition, the improvement of the microstructural stability was substantially influenced by solid solution strengthening and fine grain strengthening. However, the addition of excessive Nb could significantly affect the growth model of the oxide scale and negatively affect the oxidation performance and microstructural evolution of the alloy (2#HR3C).

A new characterization method is proposed to study intergranular precipitates of polycrystalline material in the planar manner. A dual beam focused ion beam (FIB) - scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was applied to fabricate thin FIB lamella with a grain boundary parallel to the lamella to investigate for transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Distributions, microstructures and compositions of intergranular precipitates of austenitic stainless steel were then examined by TEM, scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). A dissimilar autogenous laser welded joint of AISI 430F (X12CrMoS17) martensitic stainless steel and AISI 304 (X5CrNi18-10) austenitic stainless steel was manufactured. The welded joint was examined by non-destructive visual testing and destructive testing by macro- and microscopic examination and hardness measurements. With reference to the ISO 13919-1 standard the welded joint was characterized by C level, due to the gas pores detected. Microscopic observations of AISI 430F steel revealed a mixture of ferrite and carbides with many type II sulfide inclusions. Detailed analysis showed that they were Cr-rich manganese sulfides. AISI 304 steel was characterized by the expected austenitic microstructure with banded δ-ferrite. Martensitic microstructure with fine, globular sulfide inclusions was observed in the weld metal. The hardness in the heat-affected zone was increased in the martensitic steel in relation to the base metal and decreased in the austenitic steel. The hardness range in the weld metal, caused by chemical inhomogeneity, was 184-416 HV0.3.

The composition changes in the close to surface of the austenitic stainless steel DIN 1.4981 irradiated at high doses. Theoretical simulations using the SRIM-2013 program show that the damage due to Nickel cation [Ni 2+ ] ions irradiation of 3.66 MeV extends to up 2 μm deep in the steel under study. Then the applications of Grazing incidence X-ray Diffraction (GXRD) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Gallium cation [Ga 3+ ] ions sputtering assisted, were necessary to detect respectively, any compositional changes with the depth. GXRD differences were recorded in the intensity and it's Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM), of the austenite (111) diffraction peak, at different depths in the Irradiate Zone (IZ). Through XPS was found that Nickel [Ni], Niobium [Nb], and Manganese [Mn] were depleted it is important to highlight Chromium [Cr], and Molybdenum [Mo] were improved at the irradiated surface; such behavior was contrary to the element migration under irradiation reported for austenitic stainless steels irradiated at low doses., (© 2020 The Author(s).)

The implant surface and tissue experience strain when micro-motion occurs at the bone-implant interface under physiological loading. Moreover, strain is also introduced on the surface during mechanical processing of biomedical devices. Both these situations can induce phase transformation depending on the degree of stability of the microstructural constituents. In this regard, we elucidate here the interplay between mechanically-induced phase transformation (strain-induced martensite) in austenitic stainless steel on osteoblast functions. Strain-induced martensite significantly impacted cellular functions, notably, cell attachment, cell-surface interactions, proliferation, and synthesis of prominent proteins (fibronectin, actin, and vinculin). Strain-induced martensite favorably modulated cellular activity and contributed to small differences in hydrophilicity in relation to the non-strained austenitic stainless steel surface. This study presents results of experimental tests on quality of dissimilar welded joints between 316L austenitic and 2304 lean duplex stainless steels, welded without ceramic backing. Fiber laser welded butt joints at a thickness of 8 mm were subjected to non-destructive testing (visual and penetrant), destructive testing (static tensile test, bending test, and microhardness measurements) and structure observations (macro- and microscopic examinations, SEM, element distribution characteristics, and ferrite content measurements). Non-destructive tests and metallographic examinations showed that the welded joints meet the acceptance criteria for B level in accordance with EN ISO 13919-1 standard. Also the results of the destructive tests confirmed the high quality of the joints: specimens were fractured in base material with lower strength-316L austenitic stainless steel and a 180° bending angle was obtained confirming the high plasticity of the joints. Microscopic examination, SEM and EDS analysis showed the distribution of alloying elements in joints. The microhardness of the autogenous weld metal was higher by about 20 HV0.2 than that of the lean duplex steel. Ferrite content in the root was about 37% higher than in the face of the weld. The Schaeffler phase diagram was used to predict the phase composition of the welded joints and sufficient compliance with the magnetic method was found. The presented procedure can be used for welding of 316L-2304 stainless steels dissimilar welded joints of 8 mm thickness without ceramic backing.

The ultrafine-grained microstructures and their effect on the yield strength of a 316L-type austenitic stainless steel processed by large strain cold/warm rolling and subsequent annealing were studied. A kind of continuous recrystallization developed during annealing, resulting in the evolution of uniform ultrafine-grained microstructures with relatively high residual dislocation densities. The development of such microstructure at 973 K led to excellent combination of tensile properties including high yield strength (σ 0.2 > 900 MPa) and satisfactory plasticity (δ > 15%). A unique power law function between the annealed grain size and the dislocation density with a dislocation density exponent of -0.5 was obtained for these continuously recrystallized microstructures. A physically justified explanation of the observed structural/substructural strengthening is introduced.

Based on an 33Cr23Ni8Mn3N thermal simulation experiment, the application of an artificial neural network (ANN) in thermomechanical processing was studied. Based on the experimental data, a microstructure evolution model and constitutive equation of 33Cr23Ni8Mn3N heat-resistant steel were established. Stress, dynamic recrystallization (DRX) fraction, and DRX grain size were predicted. These models were evaluated by a variety of statistical indicators to determine that these models would work well if applied in predicting microstructure evolution and that they have high precision. Then, based on the weight of the ANN model, the sensitivity of the input parameters was analyzed to achieve an optimized ANN model. Based on the most widely used sensitivity analysis (SA) method (the Garson method), the input parameters were analyzed. The results show that the most important factor for the microstructure of 33Cr23Ni8Mn3N is the strain rate ( ε ˙ ). For the control of the microstructure, the control of the ε ˙ is preferred. ANN was applied to the development of processing map. The feasibility of the ANN processing map on austenitic heat-resistant steel was verified by experiments. The results show that the ANN processing map is basically consistent with processing map based on experimental data. The trained ANN model was implanted into finite element simulation software and tested. The test results show that the ANN model can accurately expand the data volume to achieve high precision simulation results.
