Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) excitation on the photochromic reaction of a diarylethene derivative (DE) was studied by surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). UV and visible light irradiations transform reversibly DE between open-form (OF) and closed-form (CF) isomers, respectively. A mixture of PMMA and DE (either OF or CF isomer) was spin-coated onto gold nanorods (GNRs) arrays, designed by electron beam lithography, with two localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPR) at distinct wavelengths, due to their anisotropy. The photochromic reaction rates from CF to OF isomers, under LSPR excitation, were monitored from SERS spectral changes under different polarizations, on the same GNR substrate to compare the effect of LSPR field strength. It appears that the photoisomerization rate was faster when LSPR was excited with the polarization parallel to the GNR long axis. Long-range interaction in regular metallic nanostructure arrays can provide the possibility to manipulate their optical properties, governed by the excitation of localized surface plasmon (LSP) resonances. When assembling the nanoparticles in an array, interactions between nanoparticles can result in a strong electromagnetic coupling for specific grating constants. Such a grating effect leads to narrow LSP peaks due to the emergence of new radiative orders in the plane of the substrate, and thus, an important improvement of the intensity of the local electric field. In this work, we report on the optical study of LSP modes supported by square arrays of gold nanodiscs deposited on an indium tin oxyde (ITO) coated glass substrate, and its impact on the surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) of a molecular adsorbate, the mercapto benzoic acid (4-MBA). We estimated the Raman gain of these molecules, by varying the grating constant and the refractive index of the surrounding medium of the superstrate, from an asymmetric medium (air) to a symmetric one (oil). We show that the Raman gain can be improved with one order of magnitude in a symmetric medium compared to SERS experiments in air, by considering the appropriate grating constant. Our experimental results are supported by FDTD calculations, and confirm the importance of the grating effect in the design of SERS substrates.

The design of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) platforms based on the coupling between plasmonic nanostructures and stimuli-responsive polymers has attracted considerable interest over the past decades for the detection of a wide range of analytes, including pollutants and biological molecules. However, the SERS intensity of analytes trapped inside smart hybrid nanoplatforms is subject to important fluctuations because of the spatial and spectral variation of the plasmonic near-field enhancement (i.e., its dependence with the distance to the nanoparticle surface and with the localized surface plasmon resonance). Such fluctuations may impair interpretation and quantification in sensing devices. In this paper, we investigate the influence of the plasmonic near-field profile upon the Raman signal intensity of analytes trapped inside thermoresponsive polymer-coated gold nanoarrays. For this, well-defined plasmonic arrays (nanosquares and nanocylinders) were modified by poly( N -isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) brushes using surface-initiated atom-transfer radical polymerization. Molecular probes were trapped inside these Au@PNIPAM nanostructures by simple physisorption or by covalent grafting at the end of PNIPAM brushes, using click chemistry. The SERS spectra of molecular probes were studied along various heating/cooling cycles, demonstrating a strong correlation between SERS intensities and near-field spectral profile of underlying nanoparticles, as confirmed by simulations based on the finite difference time domain method. Thermoresponsive plasmonic devices thus provide an ideal dynamic SERS platform to investigate the influence of the near-field plasmonic profile upon the SERS response of analytes., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest.

The control of quantum dot (QD) photoluminescence (PL) is a challenge for many applications. It is well known that plasmonic resonances can enhance this PL. In this work, we couple QDs with silver nanoparticles and immerse the system in a photochromic organic material. As these molecules are optical switches going from a transparent to a colored isomer by absorbing UV light, we observe on one hand a Förster Resonant Energy Transfer (FRET) between the QD emission and the absorbing isomer and on the other hand a plasmonic PL enhancement. The photochromic transition leads to the optical control of the FRET, allowing us to control the QD de-excitation preferences (radiative or non-radiative) and so the emitted light.

Active plasmonics is a key focus for the development of advanced plasmonic applications. By selectively exciting the localized surface plasmon resonance sustained by the short or the long axis of silver nanorods, we demonstrate a polarization-dependent strong coupling between the plasmonic resonance and the excited state of photochromic molecules. By varying the width and the length of the nanorods independently, a clear Rabi splitting appears in the dispersion curves of both resonators.

Site-selective surface functionalization of anisotropic gold nanoparticles represents a major breakthrough for fully exploiting nanoparticle anisotropy. In this paper, we explore an original strategy for the regioselective functionalization of lithographically designed gold nanorods (AuNRs), based a combination of photo-induced plasmon excitation and aryl diazonium salt chemistry.

The controlled assembly of anisotropic plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) into highly SERS-active substrates remains particularly challenging for the production of long-term stable NP assemblies in suspension. In this work, we report a simple and efficient strategy to assemble gold nanorods (AuNRs) into dimers. The pH-dependent assembly was triggered using the bifunctional molecular linker BPE (1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene) and quenched with silver nitrate. The resulting AuNR dimers were encapsulated in mesoporous silica shell and proved to be stable in water for at least 5 months. Taking advantage of the large Raman scattering cross-section of the linker BPE, we conducted a detailed study of the enhancement ability of these NR dimers using solution-based surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). Both experimental (SERS) and theoretical (discrete dipole approximation) studies of the near-field characteristics revealed a two-orders of magnitude increase of the SERS enhancement factor for the dimers as compared to isolated AuNRs. Besides thermal and colloidal stability, mesoporous silica coating of AuNRs imparts other notable advantages due to its porosity and biocompatibility, which make these core-shell plasmonic platforms promising for future bio-applications.

A smart and highly SERS-active plasmonic platform was designed by coupling regular arrays of nanotriangles to colloidal gold nanorods via a thermoresponsive polymer spacer (poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), PNIPAM). The substrates were prepared by combining a top-down and a bottom-up approach based on nanosphere lithography, surface-initiated controlled radical polymerization, and colloidal assembly. This multistep strategy provided regular hexagonal arrays of nanotriangles functionalized by polymer brushes and colloidal gold nanorods, confined exclusively on the nanotriangle surface. Interestingly, one could finely tune the gold nanorod impregnation on the polymer-coated nanostructures by adjusting the polymer layer thickness, leading to highly coupled plasmonic systems for intense SERS signal. Moreover, the thermoresponsive properties of the PNIPAM brushes could be wisely handled in order to monitor the SERS activity of the nanostructures coupled via this polymer spacer. The coupled hybrid plasmonic nanostructures designed in this work are therefore very promising smart platforms for the sensitive detection of analytes by SERS.

The chemisorption of 1,3,4-oxadiazole-2-thiol (ODT) on gold nanorods has been investigated by using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and density functional theory (DFT). Although most of the SERS spectra have remarkable similarity to the normal Raman spectra of the pure analyte, the adsorption of ODT on a gold surface leads to a drastic change in its Raman spectrum and distinct vibrational features are obtained with gold nanorods and spherical nanoparticles. Simulated Raman spectra for hybrid systems that consist of an oxadiazole moiety coordinated to a Au20 gold cluster provided valuable information about the coordination mode and enabled us to assign vibration modes., (© 2014 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. A facile method for growing silica layer on lithographically designed gold nanorod arrays (GNRAs) using a convenient sol-gel method is presented herein. The silica layer thickness was controlled on GNRAs with the reaction time. The localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) spectra of these hybrid metal/dielectric nanoparticles were recorded before and after the coating and the effect of different solvents on the LSPR were also assessed. The change in the fluorescence and SERS intensities of a probe molecule (Rh6G) deposited on GNRAs and silica-coated GNRAs revealed that the as-fabricated silica layer does inhibit the quenching of molecular excited states and enhances photophysical/photochemical processes. This kind of hybrid metal/dielectric nanoparticle arrays hence turn out to be real good candidates to design new "plasmonic-active" devices.

Hybrid materials combining gold nanoparticles (GNP) of variable diameter and an organic thin layer of photochromic diarylethenes were achieved. Solid-state photoswitching based on ring-closure/ring-opening reaction was carried out under alternate UV and visible irradiations. In addition to the spectral changes due to the photochromism itself, the surface plasmon resonance related to the GNP is significantly modified, influenced by a photoinduced change in the refractive index of its environment. These two contributions were sorted out, showing the possibility of probing a photochromic switch by following the plasmon band. The shape change of the plasmon band was consistently compared to calculations based on the Mie theory. Additionally, with one given diarylethene compound, both UV-visible spectroscopy and surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy showed an acceleration of the ring-opening photochromic reaction in the presence of GNP.

In this paper, we demonstrate the template-assisted deposition of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) stabilized gold nanorods at lithographically defined positions on a substrate. Overcoating of the nanoparticles with polystyrenesulfonate allows to switch the original nanoparticles positive surface charge to negative and to apply the template-assisted deposition technique developed for citrate-capped gold nanoparticles also to CTAB stabilized nanoparticles. The successful, selective deposition of gold nanorods in trenches with widths down to 50 nm is demonstrated. Our results indicate the potential of this method for the fabrication of well controlled, reproducible plasmonic biosensing substrates, applicable to the vast palette of anisotropic nanoparticle shapes synthesized with CTAB as the templating agent., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Inc. 3D nanostructured transparent indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes prepared by glancing angle deposition (GLAD) were used for the spectroelectrochemical characterization of cytochrome c (Cyt c) and neuroglobin (Nb). These small hemoproteins, involved as electron-transfer partners in the prevention of apoptosis, are oppositely charged at physiological pH and can each be adsorbed within the ITO network under different pH conditions. The resulting modified electrodes were investigated by UV-visible absorption spectroscopy coupled with cyclic voltammetry. By using nondenaturating adsorption conditions, we demonstrate that both proteins are capable of direct electron transfer to the conductive ITO surface, sharing apparent standard potentials similar to those reported in solution. Preservation of the 3D protein structure upon adsorption was confirmed by resonance Raman (rR) spectroscopy. Analysis of the derivative cyclic voltabsorptograms (DCVA) monitored either in the Soret or the Q bands at scan rates up to 1 V s(-1) allowed us to investigate direct interfacial electron transfer kinetics. From the DCVA shape and scan rate dependences, we conclude that the interaction of Cyt c with the ITO surface is more specific than Nb, suggesting an oriented adsorption of Cyt c and a random adsorption of Nb on the ITO surface. At the same time, Cyt c appears more sensitive to the experimental adsorption conditions, and complete denaturation of Cyt c may occur as evidenced from cross-correlation of rR spectroscopy and spectroelectrochemistry.

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is now a well-established technique for the detection, under appropriate conditions, of single molecules (SM) adsorbed on metallic nanostructures. However, because of the large variations of the SERS enhancement factor on the surface, only molecules located at the positions of highest enhancement, so-called hot-spots, can be detected at the single-molecule level. As a result, in all SM-SERS studies so far only a small fraction, typically less than 1%, of molecules are actually observed. This complicates the analysis of such experiments and means that trace detection via SERS can in principle still be vastly improved. Here we propose a simple scheme, based on selective adsorption of the target analyte at the SERS hot-spots only, that allows in principle detection of every single target molecule in solution. We moreover provide a general experimental methodology, based on the comparison between average and maximum (single molecule) SERS enhancement factors, to verify the efficiency of our approach. The concepts and tools introduced in this work can readily be applied to other SERS systems aiming for detection of every single target molecule.

The grafting of stimuli-responsive polymer brushes on plasmonic structures provides a perfectly controlled two-dimensional active device with optical properties that can be modified through external stimuli. Herein, we demonstrate thermally induced modifications of the plasmonic response of lithographic gold nanoparticles functionalized by thermosensitive polymer brushes of (poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), PNIPAM). Optical modifications result from refractive local index changes due to a phase transition from a hydrophilic state (swollen regime) to a hydrophobic state (collapsed regime) of the polymer chains occurring in a very small range of temperatures. The refractive index of the polymer in aqueous solution is estimated in both states, deduced from the discrete dipole approximation (DDA) method. The combination of lithographic gold NPs and thermoresponsive polymer chains leads to a new generation of perfectly calibrated and dynamically controlled hybrid gold/polymer system for real-time nanosensors.

In the present work, the combination of chemical immobilization with electron beam lithography enables the production of sensitive and reproducible SERS-active areas composed of stochastic arrangements of gold nanoparticles. The number of nanoparticles was varied from 2 to 500. Thereby a systematic analysis of these SERS-active areas allows us to study SERS efficiency as a function of the number of nanoparticles. We found that the experimental parameters are critical, in particular the size of the SERS-active area must be comparable to the effective area of excitation to obtained reproducible SERS measurements. The sensitivity has also been studied by deducing the number of NPs that generate the enhancement. With this approach we demonstrates that the maximum enhancement, the best sensitivity, is obtained with the smallest number of nanoparticles that is resonant at a given excitation wavelength.

This paper describes a general stepwise strategy combining diazonium salt, surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP), and click chemistry for an efficient gold surface functionalization by poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) brushes and gold nanoparticle assemblies. We designed by this way a new plasmonic device made of gold nanoparticles separated from a gold film through a thermoresponsive polymer layer. This organic layer responds to temperature variations by conformational changes (with a characteristic temperature called the lower critical solution temperature, LCST) and is therefore able to vary the distance between the gold nanoparticles and the gold film. The optical properties of these stimulable substrates were probed by surface-enhanced raman scattering (SERS) using methylene blue (MB) as a molecular probe. We show that an increase of the external temperature reversibly induces a significant enhancement of the MB SERS signal. This was attributed to a stronger interaction between the gold nanoparticles and the gold substrate. The temperature-responsive plasmonic devices developed in this paper thus provide a dynamic SERS platform, with thermally switchable electromagnetic coupling between the gold nanoparticles and the gold surface.

Silver nanostructured films were directly prepared by spray deposition of preformed polyol-based Ag-PVP nanoparticles. These homogeneous films of high optical quality were tested as SERS-active substrates. Laser excitation at 514.5 nm within the red part of the plasmon band leads to intense and reproducible SERS spectra of acridine, used as the probe molecule. From SERS measurements at different pH values, it was possible to determine the apparent pK(a) of acridine and to obtain specific surface properties of the film. Finally, these SERS titrations along with enhancement factor estimates allowed us to further depict the nature of the films.

This paper describes a general stepwise strategy combining diazonium salt and click chemistries for an efficient gold surface functionalization by gold nanoparticles. The procedure first involves the strong covalent bonding to gold electrodes of OH-terminated aryl layers derived from the electroreduction of the parent diazonium salts. The following step consists in transforming the OH end-groups to azides in order to obtain "clickable"-active gold surfaces, which could further be used as versatile platforms for the subsequent grafting of acetylene-bearing molecules. The practical interest of the gold surfaces functionalized by this stepwise strategy was evidenced through the self-assembly of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-active gold nanoparticles. SERS activity was shown to be amplified by the presence of a very strong local electric field confinement between the particles and the gold surface.

Control of the optical properties of oblate metallic nanoparticles (NP) is realized using an electrochemical switch consisting of a thin layer of conducting polymer (CP). Reversible modulation, moderate damping, and almost total quenching of the localized surface plasmon (LSP) resonance is achieved as a function of the thickness of the CP layer and the potential applied to the electrochemical systems, that is, the charge carrier density injected into the CP layer. These experimental results can be qualitatively reproduced using the single-particle model in the electrostatic approximation. We believe that combining an electroactive conducting polymer and NP will prove to be a general strategy for controlling the properties of various types of NP (fluorescent, magnetic, semiconducting) in many fields.

In the course of developing electronic devices on a molecular scale, dithienylethenes photochromic molecules constitute promising candidates for optoelectronic applications such as memories and switches. There is thus a great interest to understand and control the switching behavior of photochromic compounds deposited on metallic surfaces or nanoparticles. Within the framework of the density functional theory, we studied the effect of small gold clusters (Au3 and Au9) on the electronic structure and absorption spectrum of a model dithienylethene molecule. The molecular orbital interactions between the photochromic molecule and the gold cluster made it possible to rationalize some experimental findings (Dulic, D.; van der Molen, S. J.; Kudernac, T.; Jonkman, H. T.; de Jong, J. J. D.; Bowden, T. N.; van Esch, J.; Feringa, B. L.; van Wees, B. J. Phys. Rev. Lett. 2003, 91, 207402). For the closed-ring isomer, grafting a photochromic molecule on a small gold cluster does not change the characteristics of the electronic transition involved in the ring-opening reaction. On the opposite, the absorption spectrum of the photochromic open-ring isomer is strongly modified by the inclusion of the metallic cluster. In agreement with experimental results, our study thus showed that the cycloreversion reaction which involves the closed-ring isomer should be still possible, whereas the ring-closure reaction which involves the open-ring isomer should be inhibited. Connecting a dithienylethene molecule to a small gold cluster hence provides a qualitative comprehension of the photochromic activities of dithienylethenes connected to a gold surface.

Due to the continuously increasing demand for ultimate miniaturization of electronic and photonic systems, molecular electronics and plasmonic devices are currently booming as alternative technologies because of their very promising potential in writing, reading, storing, and processing information at the nanoscale. Conducting polymers or oligomers have been proposed and used as basic building blocks in molecular and plastic electronics since the end of the 80s. Plasmonics is, on the other hand, an emerging branch of photonics which uses nanostructured materials that support surface plasmons. Among plasmonic devices, active plasmonic devices are still lacking. In this work, we report on new active molecular plasmonic devices in which the electrochemical switching of a nanometric film of conductive polymer between its reduced and oxidized state is used in order to control, switch, and modulate localized surface plasmon (LSP) resonance of gold nanoparticle arrays.

[structure: see text] A new photochromic thieno-2H-chromene alpha-amino acid derivative was prepared by C-N palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling of a bromothieno-2H-chromene with the aminated aromatic side chain of the methyl ester of a N,N-diprotected amino acid. Its good photochromic properties demonstrated by flash photolysis and continuous irradiation indicate a possible application in ophthalmic lenses. It may also be inserted into peptides to give photoinduced reversible structural changes.

The influence of oligothiophene substituents on five new [3H]naphtho[2,1-b]pyrans has been investigated using flash photolysis and continuous irradiation techniques. Photochromic properties strongly depend on the number and position of the thienyl units. Thienyl substitution increases the UV/visible absorbance of the lower energy transition of both the naphthopyran and merocyanine isomers. The rate constants of the thermal fading processes also increase with the number of thiophenic entities. Although several minor photoisomers, whose relative amounts depend on the irradiation conditions could be involved, it has been assumed that under continuous monochromatic irradiation, the evolution of the photochromic reaction can be described by the formation of only one photoisomer. Under these conditions, quantum yields of photocolouration and molar absorption coefficients of the non-isolable photomerocyanine isomer were evaluated by photokinetic analysis. Flash-photolytic colourability can be interpreted using continuous irradiation parameters. A linear correlation has been established between experimental and calculated colourability. This result shows that similar photochromic reactions leading to similar photoisomers are triggered either by polychromatic flash photolysis or by continuous monochromatic irradiation.
