Introduction: Muscle fatigue is a leading cause of rotator cuff (RC) pathologies. Scapular orientation affected by changes in the thoracic spine account for differences in body postures leading to altered RC muscle activation. This posture-related alteration in RC muscle activation and its fatigue response needs to be analyzed., Materials and Methods: This study included 50 healthy shoulders with no coexisting spine pathologies. Raw data were recorded using electromyography sensors for RC muscles during two isometric maneuvers of abduction and external rotation, performed at 30% maximum voluntary contraction at 30°, 45°, and 90° arm elevation in sitting and standing. The raw data were analyzed in DataLITE ® software, and the mean power frequency (MPF) was extracted to analyze the fatigue response of RC muscles. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test and Kruskal-Wallis test with Bonferroni corrections analyzed fatigue differences between postures and various activities. P < 0.05 was considered significant for the results., Results: Supraspinatus muscle demonstrated significant fatigue at 90° of arm elevation in standing as compared to sitting (MPF -5.40: -5.41; P = 0.03) posture. Between the three elevation angles, all the RC muscles showed increased fatigue at 90° (MPF range -5.22 to -6.64). When compared between abduction and external rotation, only infraspinatus showed fatigue in external rotation (MPF range -5.42 to -6.08). Among all the three RC muscles, infraspinatus showed the maximum fatigue of MPF -6.64 when compared to supraspinatus -5.22 and teres minor -5.36., Conclusion: The findings indicate that alterations in the body postures and different elevation angles affect the RC muscles' fatigue response., (© 2022. Background: There are limited published data on factors related to risky sexual practices (RSP) affecting sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among female sex workers (FSWs) in Ecuador., Methods: Cross-sectional study of FSWs presenting for a consultation in a primary health care centre during 2017. A questionnaire was administered to collect information on RSP and potential risk factors including age, membership of an FSW association, self-report of previous STI diagnosis, previous treatment for suspected STI and temporary migration for sex work. Associations between RSP and potential risk factors were estimated by logistic regression. The proportion of STI was estimated from vaginal swabs by real-time PCR for four sexually transmitted pathogens (Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Trichomonas vaginalis, Chlamydia trachomatis, and Mycoplasma genitalium)., Results: Of 249 FSWs recruited, 22.5% had reported RSPs at least once during sex work. Among FSWs reporting unprotected vaginal sex in the previous three months, 25.5% had at least one other RSP type. 17.6% (95%CI 13.3-22.8) had at least one active STI. Prevalence of co-infections was 2.4% (95%CI 1.1-5.2). In multivariable analysis, RSP was associated with age (adjusted OR 1.06; 95%CI 1.02-1.10), membership of an FSWs association (aOR 3.51; 95%CI 1.60-7.72) and self-reported previous STI (aOR 3.43; 95%CI 1.28-9.17)., Conclusions: Among a population of female sex workers with high proportion of STIs, increasing age and belonging to an FSWs association was associated with a higher likelihood of engaging in RSP with clients. Objective: To analyze the health-related quality of life in patients with osteoporosis and to compare it with the overall population., Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out with 60 female patients of the rheumatology service at a university hospital, in Spain, from April to October 2003. The Short Form-36 (SF-36) questionnaire was applied in order to obtain demographic data, clinical characteristics and data about lifestyles related to health. Patients were classified in age groups. The statistics tests performed were Chi-square, general linear model, Student's t-test., Results: The interviewees' average age was 65.57 years old (SD: +/- 9.7 years), and average time interval for diagnosis was 3.4 +/- 2.84 years. The best scores were in social functioning (89), emotional aspects (72.2), mental health (63), and vitality (53.7). The lowest scores were in general health (45.1), physical capacity (47.7), pain (52.3) and physical aspects (59.9). The patients' average scores were lower than the general Spanish population's scores in the following dimensions: functional capacity, physical aspects, pain and overall health status. The greatest differences between the average SF-36 scores for patients and for the overall Spanish population were in the age group ranging from 55 to 64 years old. Scores were lower or similar to the general Spanish population in all other dimensions of the questionnaire. No significant associations were found between the dimensions of the SF-36 contemplated in this study and the clinical, demographic and lifestyle data., Conclusions: The patients presented bad quality of life, particularly with respect to those dimensions that are most relevant with respect to osteoporosis, when compared with the overall Spanish population. The physical dimensions were the ones most affected.

Purpose: This study was conducted to study the influence of protein structure on the immunogenicity in wild-type and immune tolerant mice of well-characterized degradation products of recombinant human interferon alpha2b (rhIFNalpha2b)., Methods: RhIFNalpha2b was degraded by metal-catalyzed oxidation (M), cross-linking with glutaraldehyde (G), oxidation with hydrogen peroxide (H), and incubation in a boiling water bath (B). The products were characterized with UV absorption, circular dichroism and fluorescence spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, reverse-phase high-pressure liquid chromatography, sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, Western blotting, and mass spectrometry. The immunogenicity of the products was evaluated in wild-type mice and in transgenic mice immune tolerant for hIFNalpha2. Serum antibodies were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay or surface plasmon resonance., Results: M-rhIFNalpha2b contained covalently aggregated rhIFNalpha2b with three methionines partly oxidized to methionine sulfoxides. G-rhIFNalpha2b contained covalent aggregates and did not show changes in secondary structure. H-rhIFNalpha2b was only chemically changed with four partly oxidized methionines. B-rhIFNalpha2b was largely unfolded and heavily aggregated. Nontreated (N) rhIFNalpha2b was immunogenic in the wild-type mice but not in the transgenic mice, showing that the latter were immune tolerant for rhIFNalpha2b. The anti-rhIFNalpha2b antibody levels in the wild-type mice depended on the degradation product: M-rhIFNalpha2b > H-rhIFNalpha2b approximately N-rhIFNalpha2b >> B-rhIFNalpha2b; G-rhIFNalpha2b did not induce anti-rhIFNalpha2b antibodies. In the transgenic mice, only M-rhIFNalpha2b could break the immune tolerance., Conclusions: RhIFNalpha2b immunogenicity is related to its structural integrity. Moreover, the immunogenicity of aggregated rhIFNalpha2b depends on the structure and orientation of the constituent protein molecules and/or on the aggregate size.
