Introduction: A woman's body experiences numerous physiological and psychological changes throughout pregnancy in order to accommodate the expanding requirements of the growing fetus. These changes can lead to various pregnancy-related health issues like gestational diabetes, and pre-eclampsia. Women who regularly engage in physical activity during pregnancy have a reduced risk of developing those health problems. Pregnant women should have adequate knowledge and a good attitude towards physical activity during pregnancy, which is an essential precursor for practising exercise. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the knowledge and attitude of antenatal mothers regarding physical activity during pregnancy at a tertiary care hospital in Puducherry., Method: A cross-sectional analytical study design was performed to collect data from 380 antenatal mothers. A convenient sampling technique was used to select the study participants. A structured, validated, self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data from pregnant women attending the antenatal outpatient department of Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER). Data were coded and analysed by IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 19.0 (Released 2010; IBM Corp., Armonk, New York, United States)., Results: This study revealed that almost half of the antenatal mothers (n=195, 51.3%) had adequate knowledge whereas 185 (48.7%) had inadequate knowledge regarding physical activity during pregnancy. Regarding their attitude, most of the antenatal mothers (n=303, 79.7%) had a favourable attitude and 77 (20.3%) had an unfavourable attitude towards physical activity during pregnancy. It was found that there is a significant association between education, employment, pre-pregnancy physical activity status, co-morbidities, and BMI of the antenatal mothers and their level of knowledge (p < 0.05). Also, educational status, employment status, level of activity in day-to-day life, pre-pregnancy physical activity status, co-morbidities, and number of antenatal visits attended by the antenatal mothers were significantly associated with their level of attitude (p < 0.05)., Conclusion: The level of knowledge regarding physical activity during pregnancy was adequate among antenatal mothers and their attitude seems to be favorable. This does not mean that they are exercising effectively. Therefore, health professionals should put forth their effort to bring about behavioural change among pregnant women towards exercise by conducting counselling sessions, and antenatal exercise classes during their antenatal care visits in order to empower pregnant women to lead a healthy pregnancy., Competing Interests: Human subjects: Consent for treatment and open access publication was obtained or waived by all participants in this study. Background: Prenatal genetic testing is done throughout pregnancy to identify or diagnose birth defects. These tests aim to help families make educated decisions regarding pregnancy and reproduction, as well as aid healthcare providers in providing optimal care for pregnant women. Prenatal blood screening is performed twice during pregnancy., Aim: The present study aims to assess the Effectiveness of video assisted teaching programme on level of knowledge and attitude regarding prenatal genetic testing among antenatal mother., Materials and Methods: A Quasi experimental, one group pre and post experimental research design was used for this study. The study conducted in SMCH. A total of 60 study participants were recruited by using a non probability convenient sample technique, based on inclusion criteria., Results: The analysis revealed that most of the antenatal mothers, 24 (40%) were aged between 21 and 25 years, 33 (55%) had higher secondary education, 34 (56.6%) were private employees, 43 (71.6%) were Hindus, 46 (76.7%) were residing in urban area, 40 (66.6%) had an income of between INR 10,000 and 20,000, and 48 (80%) and 3 (30%) had friends/relatives and health care professionals as source of information., Conclusion: The study found that video education on genetic testing improved patients' and increased quality of life., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts of interest., (Copyright: © 2024 Journal of Pharmacy and Bioallied Sciences.)

Background: Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) during gravidity are among the most preponderant contagion globally and can culminate in fetal and maternal mortality. Lack of awareness and poor preventive practices can exacerbate this outcome. This study assessed the knowledge and preventive practices of antenatal mothers' towards UTIs in pregnancy., Design: This was a cross-sectional descriptive survey involving antenatal mothers in selected health care facilities in Ekiti State., Methods: A pre-tested adapted questionnaire was used for data collection. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and Chi-square at p  < 0.05., Results: The mean respondents' age was 24.6 ± 2.1 years and barely less than half (43.8%) were multigravida. The findings of the study revealed that 64.0% of the respondents had good knowledge of UTIs. Overall, majority (78.9%) of the respondents exhibit good preventive practices toward UTIs in pregnancy, although the prevalence of UTIs among the studied subjects was found to be high (54.1%), with nearly half (48.7%) of the respondents reported been tested once for UTIs in the current pregnancy. Furthermore, there was a statistically significant relationship between educational level and respondents' knowledge on the prevention of UTIs in pregnancy ( p  = 0.00; p  < 0.05)., Conclusions: Respondents had good knowledge and good preventive practices toward UTIs. Anemia during pregnancy causes 40% of maternal fatalities in underdeveloped nations, according to statistics from the WHO. Pregnant women should meet the requirements for various nutrients, notably micronutrients, to ensure a better pregnancy outcome in the future. Cucurbita moschata (Pumpkin) seeds contain a variety of compounds, such as m-carboxyphenylalanine, amino butyrate, and citrulline, as well as a number of other amino acids. It has a wide variety of biological activity such as antioxidant, anticancer, anti-inflammatory etc. However, the community's use of pumpkin seeds is still limited. The present study was aimed to assess the impact of supplementation of pumpkin seeds on anemia among antenatal mothers in relation to Demographic and obstetric variables at Amalapuram Mandal, East Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh. In the third stage of the study, antenatal mothers' pre- and post-test scores for indicators of anaemia, pica, nail health, level of activity, heart rate, capillary refill, nutritional status, extremities, and level of hunger were compared. According to age, education, occupation, monthly income, and information source, the data demonstrates that according to three prenatal moms' consumption of pumpkin seeds in the morning, three in the afternoon, and one in the evening. The data available indicates that, of the 5 prenatal moms, 2 displayed symptoms of anemia with respect to the length of the menstrual cycle, the volume of menstrual flow, and the method of the previous delivery. Additionally, it was discovered that three of the pregnant mothers had appropriate hemoglobin levels and three of them had inadequate levels based on their past deliveries, menstrual flow volume, and cycle length. It also revealed that there is no discernible relationship between pregnant mothers in Amalapuram Mandal's diet of dry fruits and nuts and menstrual cycle length, flow volume, or method of prior birth., (© 2022 Biomedical Informatics.)

Providing comfort to an antenatal mother is one of the critical components of the nonstress test (NST). An experimental study was conducted on 450 antenatal mothers beyond 34 weeks, who were randomly allocated into three groups - supine, left lateral, and semi-fowler's position, to explore the association of selected maternal positions on NST results and to find the impact of these positions on the comfort level of antenatal mothers. The fetal parameters were assessed by observing and recording biophysiological measurements from the NST and the maternal comfort of different positions by the Verbal Numerical Rating Scale. The data analyzed reveal a significant association between maternal positions and fetal parameters at P < 0.05 level. Antenatal women who were in semi-fowler's position exhibited more comfort and fetal NST reactivity as noted by significant variation in the baseline fetal heart rate, beat-to-beat variability, acceleration, deceleration, and fetal movements., Competing Interests: None

Maternal and child nutrition has been a critical component of health, sustainable development, and progress in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). While a decrement in maternal mortality is an important indicator, simply surviving pregnancy and childbirth does not imply better maternal health. One of the fundamental obligations of nations under international human rights law is to enable women to endure pregnancy and delivery as an aspect of their enjoyment of reproductive and sexual health and rights and to live a dignified life. The aim of this study was to discover the correlation between the Maternal Observation and Motivation (MOM) program and m-Health support for maternal and newborn health. A comparative study was done among 196 pregnant mothers (study group-94; control group-102 mothers) with not less than 20 weeks of gestation. Maternal outcomes such as Hb and weight gain and newborn results such as birth weight and crown-heel length were obtained at baseline and at 28 and 36 weeks of gestation. Other secondary data collected were abortion, stillbirth, low birth weight, major congenital malformations, twin or triplet pregnancies, physical activity, and maternal well-being. The MOM intervention included initial face-to-face education, three in-person visits, and eight virtual health coaching sessions via WhatsApp. The baseline data on Hb of the mothers show that 31 (32.98%) vs. 27 (28.72%) mothers in the study and control group, respectively, had anemia, which improved to 27.66% and 14.98% among study group mothers at 28 and 36 weeks of gestation ( p < 0.001). The weight gain ( p < 0.001), level of physical activity ( p < 0.001), and maternal well-being ( p < 0.01) also had significant differences after the intervention. Even after controlling for potentially confounding variables, the maternal food practices regression model revealed that birth weight was directly correlated with the consumption of milk ( p < 0.001), fruits ( p < 0.01), and green vegetables ( p < 0.05). As per the physical activity and maternal well-being regression model, the birth weight and crown-heel length were strongly related with the physical activity and maternal well-being of mothers at 36 weeks of gestation ( p < 0.05). Combining the MOM intervention with standard antenatal care is a safe and effective way to improve maternal welfare while upholding pregnant mothers' human rights.

Background: Birth defects (BD) are considered a leading cause of childhood morbidity and mortality. Personal, cultural, and health care system barriers may increase the incidence of BD in low and middle income countries. In this study we assessed the knowledge of antenatal mothers on BD, associated factors, and prevention and management., Methods: Three hundred and fifty (350) antenatal mothers were surveyed using a pretested, self-administered questionnaire. The knowledge on BD was evaluated under 3 categories; knowledge on BD, knowledge on associated factors, and knowledge on prevention and management. The total scores were calculated for each category and converted into percentages. A higher percentage score indicates a high level of knowledge. Descriptive statistics and regression models were used for data analysis. Level of significance was considered as p < 0.05., Results: Mean age of the participants was 28.7 years (SD = 5.2). The age range was 17-44 years. Most of the participants (79%) had studied up to secondary or tertiary education. The average scores of knowledge on BD, associated factors, and prevention and management of BD were 57.6% (95% CI = 52.3-62.9%), 55.1% (95% CI = 49.8-60.4%) and 58.8% (95% CI = 53.5-64.1%) respectively. The average score on the overall total knowledge was 56.4% (95% CI = 51.1-61.7%). Mother's level of education, monthly income of the family and number of clinic visits made by the mother were found to be positively associated with the overall knowledge. About 62% of the participants had taken folic acid (FA) preconceptionally, a major preventive factor of BD associated with the nervous system. Folic acid intake was positively associated with age and educational level, but negatively associated with parity. Media (36.9%) and Public Health Midwives (PHMs) (20%) were found to be the major sources of knowledge on BD, associated factors and prevention in this target group., Conclusions: The average overall knowledge on BD in this group of antenatal mothers was moderate. Thus, there is a need to improve the knowledge in eligible women to reduce the occurrence of BD, ideally before they become pregnant. Media and PHMs were seem to be the effective and possible resources that can be used to educate the community on BD, associated factors and prevention of BD in Sri Lanka.

Background: Mental health disorders globally are on a rise due to various reasons. Gender differences have been one of the reasons. Pregnancy is a stressful event in mothers and it can either exacerbate preexisting mental illness or can give rise to other mental health disorders. Studies have shown that women residing in rural areas are at higher risk of developing mental health problems. Mental health problems have detrimental effects in post-partum period. Most of the complications can be prevented if psychiatric symptoms are detected in early part of pregnancy and if women are aware of these symptoms., Aim: To find the awareness, attitude and perception towards mental illness in antenatal mothers residing in rural area of India., Setting and Design: It's a descriptive cross sectional study conducted at primary health care centers., Methods and Materials: Total of 300 antenatal mothers attending primary health care centers were recruited into the study after a written informed consent was obtained., Statistical Analysis: Basic socio demographic data were collected and a semi structured questionnaire was designed. The participants were interviewed according to the questionnaire. Data collected was analyzed using SPSS software., Results and Conclusion: The mean age of the study participants was 24+5. Of the 300 study participants more than 90% were unaware that mental illness can occur during pregnancy and only around 07% could agree say that it can occur in pregnancy. There is poor awareness of mental health problems amongst pregnant women residing in rural part of southern India. The reasons for the same are lack of awareness, low levels of education, lower socio economic status, cultural beliefs and practices, lack of mental health services and stigma associated with mental illness. There is no routine screening for mental health problems during antenatal visits. Introduction: Breast milk provides nutritional, immunological, behavioral, and economic benefits and helps to build mother-infant bonding. Antenatal mothers need to be sufficiently aware about the benefits of breastfeeding., Objectives: The aim of this study is to assess the awareness and perception of breastfeeding among antenatal mothers and to find out any association between sociodemographic factors and breastfeeding awareness., Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 250 antenatal women residing in the urban slums of field-practice area of urban health and training center; using a predesigned, pretested, semi-structured interview schedule. Antenatal checkup followed by one to one counseling for the women regarding breastfeeding was provided. Data were represented by frequencies, proportions, and associations using Chi-square, and the P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant., Results: Most (55.6%) of the women were in the age group of 18-24 years. The mean age at marriage was 19.2 ± 2.5 years. 81.2% of them were Hindus, 13.2% had adequate, 49.6% had moderately adequate, whereas 37.2% women had inadequate awareness about breastfeeding. About 100% intended to breastfeed their children, but only 64% said that they intended to exclusively breastfeed. 66.4% knew about the importance of colostrum. Age-group, religion, literacy, occupation, type of family, gravida, and number of antenatal visits showed highly significant ( P < 0.001) association with awareness of breastfeeding., Conclusion: Nearly one-third of the antenatal mothers lacked awareness on breastfeeding practices. Although all intended to breastfeed, still only 64% knew about exclusive breastfeeding. These gaps need to be addressed by awareness generation activities during antenatal counseling., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts of interest.
