Numerous factors, such as soil fertility, climatic conditions, human activity, pests, and diseases, limit agricultural yields. Pesticides and fertilizers have become indispensable tools to satisfy the global food demand. However, its adverse environmental effects have led to the search for more sustainable and ethical techniques. Biofertilizers and biopesticides based on plant- growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPRs) are efficient and ecological treatments that promote plant growth and protection against pathogens and abiotic stresses. In this study, twelve rhizobacterial strains with plant-growth-promoting attributes were selected to evaluate their plant-growth-promoting effect on tomato plants ( Solanum lycopersicum L. var Robin). Soil inoculation with these strains resulted in a significant increase in shoot length, up to 50% when compared with control plants. Regarding fresh biomass, rhizobacterial treatments significantly improved seedlings' fresh aerial weight with a maximum increase of 77%. Root biomass also demonstrated a substantial improvement, yielding 62.26% greater fresh root weight compared to the control. Finally, dry root weights exhibited the most remarkable enhancements, with values between 49 and 124%, when compared to the control plants. Concerning the nutritional status, the strains inoculation increased the macronutrients and micronutrients content in the aerial and root parts of the plants. All these findings suggest that rhizobacteria from different ecosystems and agriculture soils of the Canary Islands could be used as fertilizer inoculants to increase crop yield and promote more sustainable practices in modern agriculture.

Objectives: This analytical cross-sectional study evaluates diagnostic approaches for active condylar hyperplasia using bone SPECT techniques. Methods : it was compared the effectiveness of relative activity assessments between condyles and quantitative analysis using the condyle/clivus ratio. Results : This study's findings reveal that the condyle/clivus ratio method significantly outperforms the relative uptake method, achieving a sensitivity of 90.1% (95% CI: 84.1-94) compared to 40.7% (95% CI: 33.5-48.2), and a specificity of 77.1% (95% CI: 67.4-85) versus 72.9% (95% CI: 62.9-81.5). The condyle/clivus ratio also showed a more favorable negative likelihood ratio of 0.13 compared to 0.82 for relative uptake, and a higher area under the curve (AUC) of 0.8360 versus 0.5679. Statistically significant differences were noted ( p = 0.0001). The condyle/clivus ratio method effectively identifies affected condyles in unilateral and bilateral condylar hyperplasia cases. Conclusions: This study emphasizes the importance of incorporating comprehensive clinical evaluations and imaging modalities for assessing condylar growth activity, underscoring the need for tailored reference values in different populations to ensure reliable diagnostic interpretations.

Purpose: Investigations into the correction of presbyopia have considered lens design, clinical implications and the development of objective metrics such as the visual Strehl ratio. This study investigated the Jacobi-Fourier phase mask as an ophthalmic element in the correction of presbyopia. The goal was to develop a contact or intraocular lens whose performance was largely insensitive to changes in pupil diameter., Methods: Numerical simulations based on Fourier optics were performed to evaluate three different Jacobi-Fourier polynomials, with the aim of providing a range of clear vision (1 Dioptre (D)). Performance was evaluated for three pupil sizes (6, 4 and 2 mm), while polychromatic images were simulated using three different wavelengths (656.3, 587.6 and 486.1 nm). The Neural Transfer function was included in the simulation. To validate the method and results, we used the Visual Strehl combined objective metric (VS Combined ) currently used in visual optics. This metric gives more weight to the phase transfer function and is more suitable for non-symmetrical phase functions., Results: Numerical validation showed the suitability of the Jacobi-Fourier phase masks for extending the range of clear vision of presbyopic eyes, providing a visual acuity of at least 0.10 logMAR (6/7.5 Snellen) at all distances between 1 and 6 m. The results show a range of clear vision of 1D was not affected by changes in pupil size, an increase in retinal image contrast accompanied by image artefact reduction by increasing the radial order of the Jacobi-Fourier phase mask and a reduction of wavelength dependence of the retinal images. Radial longitudinal deficiency III and IV present as a short upper limb, functional elbow, and wrist with severe radial and palmar angulation, where the carpus articulates with the radial and palmar edge of the ulna, allowing limited mobility in a nonfunctional position. Surgical treatment aims to correct radial angulation and flexed carpal position, often altering carpal positioning over the distal ulna and impacting wrist mobility. In addition, fixation through distal ulnar epiphysis affects its growth. Although these procedures improve appearance, functionality remains suboptimal. This study describes a novel ulnar osteotomy and extensor carpi ulnaris transfer for the correction of wrist deformity in radial longitudinal deficiency with preservation of ulnocarpal motion and epiphyseal growth. The surgical technique, indications, contraindications, and potential complications are described. Three cases with postoperative follow-ups at 36, 12, and 6 months, evaluating deformity and pre/postsurgical wrist mobility ranges, are reported. A correction was achieved in the forearm-hand angle of 71 to 88 degrees of the initial. The total range of movement, between 50 degrees and 80 degrees, was almost the same before and after the operation in the most anatomic position. In one patient, there was a residual deformity at the dorsoradial border, which showed no progression during the last 6 months of follow-up. For patients with radial longitudinal deficiency, functional outcomes with preserved mobility appear to hold greater significance. The technique described in this study enabled deformity correction while maintaining a wide range of motion. Abstract: We describe a new technique of transferring the motor branch ulnar nerve (UN) to the axillary nerve (AN) by posterior approach. Three patients with C5, C6, and C7 brachial plexus injury were operated. By supraclavicular approach, the spinal accessory was transferred to the suprascapular nerve. By posterior approach in the arm, the AN was identified within the quadrilateral space, and the UN was identified medially with intrafascicular dissection of a motor fascicle, which is lifted to 4 cm in length and transferred to AN. By medial approach, a motor branch from the median nerve is transferred to the biceps nerve. At a follow-up minimum of 10 months, the maximum abduction was 160 and the minimum 90 degrees. Introduction: Bone and Joint Infections (BJI) have high morbidity. Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has increased. Culture-based diagnosis has difficult to recovering fastidious bacteria and detecting polymicrobial infections, molecular methods offer a promising improvement for the diagnosis of BJI with reduced time to result. The aim of the study was to determine the correlation between culture results and the Biofire joint infection panel (BJIP) in a cohort of pediatric patients with BJI., Materials and Methods: Descriptive study. Patients admitted with probable o confirmed BJI between July 1, 2019 and February 28, 2021 at HOMI. Blood cultures, synovial and bone fluid samples were taken. Samples were kept at -70 °C. On September 2022, the panel was performed., Results: 32 patients were included . The average age was 83m (RIQ: 32-145). 23 (71.8%) patients had a positive culture. The most frequent microorganism were S. aureus 19 (83%), 11/19 (57.9%) Staphylococci isolates were MRSA. 24/32 (75%) were positive by panel, 20 positive detections were concordant with culture, there were 6 additional isolates by panel (2 S. aureus , 2 S. pyogenes , 1 K. kingae and 1 C. albicans ), three microorganisms were isolated in culture but not in the panel. (2 S. aureus and 1 S. agalactiae ). Two patients with coinfection were detected. All MRSA were detected by culture and panel. In 26 (81.3%) patients the etiology was documented by any method., Conclusion: These results showed a moderate level of agreement between BJIP and culture ( κ  = 0.47). The panel allowed the detection of fastidious bacteria including K. kingae and polymicrobial samples. Endometrial cancer (EC) stands as one of the most prevalent gynecological malignancies affecting women, with its incidence and disease-related mortality steadily on the rise. Disulfiram (DSF), an FDA-approved medication primarily used for treating alcohol addiction, has exhibited promising anti-tumor properties. Studies have revealed DSF's capacity for enhanced anti-tumor activity, particularly when combined with copper. The novel Copper-Cysteamine (CuCy) compound, Cu 3 Cl(SR) 2 (R[bond, double bond]CH 2 CH 2 NH 2 ), showcases photodynamic effects and demonstrates significant anti-tumor potential under various conditions, including exposure to ultraviolet light, X-ray, microwave, and ultrasound. This study delves into exploring the synergistic anti-tumor effects and underlying mechanisms by utilizing copper-cysteamine in conjunction with DSF against endometrial cancer. The investigation involved comprehensive analyses encompassing in vitro experiments utilizing Ishikawa cells, in vivo studies, and transcriptomic analyses. Remarkably, the combined administration of both compounds at a low dose of 0.5 μM exhibited pronounced efficacy in impeding tumor growth, inhibiting blood vessel formation, and stimulating cell apoptosis. Notably, experiments involving transplanted tumors in nude mice vividly demonstrated the significant in vivo anti-tumor effects of this combination treatment. Detailed examination through transmission electron microscopy unveiled compelling evidence of mitochondrial damage, cellular swelling, and rupture, indicative of apoptotic changes in morphology due to the combined treatment. Moreover, transcriptomic analysis unveiled substantial downregulation of mitochondrial-related genes at the molecular level, coupled with a significant hindrance in the DNA repair pathway. These findings strongly suggest that the combined application of CuCy and DSF induces mitochondrial impairment in Ishikawa cells, thereby fostering apoptosis and ultimately yielding potent anti-tumor effects., (© 2024 The Authors.)

Background: Maternal and child malnutrition represents a public health problem in Mexico Primary care (PC) is responsible for introducing women and children under five to the health system, detecting diseases on time, and providing medical services, including pharmacological treatment if necessary. Providing these services with quality is essential to improve maternal and child health. This study evaluated the quality of nutritional care during preconception, pregnancy, postpartum, infancy, and preschool age at the PC health units across six Mexican states between 2020 and 2021., Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study with a mixed approach in units of the Secretary of Health to assess the quality of nutritional care during preconception, pregnancy, postpartum, childhood, and preschool age. The level of quality was calculated by the percentage of compliance with 16 indicators that integrated a Quality Index of Maternal and Child Nutritional Care (ICANMI, by its Spanish acronym). Compliance by indicator, by life stage, and overall was categorized using the following cut-off points: poor quality (≤ 70%), insufficient quality (71-89%), and good quality (≥ 90%). The perceptions of the barriers and facilitators that affect maternal and child nutrition were evaluated through semi-structured interviews with health professionals (HP) and users. All qualitative instruments were developed with a gender and intercultural perspective., Results: Considering the whole sample studied, maternal and child nutritional care quality during the five life stages evaluated was bad (compliance: ≤12%), reflected in the ICANMI, which had a compliance of 8.3%. Principal barriers identified to providing high-quality nutritional care were the lack of knowledge and training of health professionals, shortages of equipment, medicine, personnel, and materials, the disappearance of the social cash transfer program Prospera, the absence of local indigenous language translators to support communication between doctor and patient, and the persistence of machismo and other practices of control over women., Conclusions: These findings underscore the need for initiatives to improve the quality of nutritional care in PC facilities across Chihuahua, State of Mexico, Veracruz, Oaxaca, Chiapas, and Yucatan. It is necessary for government and health authorities, along with various stakeholders, to collaboratively devise, implement, and assess intercultural and gender-oriented policies and programs geared towards ensuring the health infrastructure and enhancing the training of health professionals to diagnose and treat the prevalence and occurrence of diverse forms of malnutrition in both maternal and child populations., (© 2024. Kounis syndrome (KS) was first described in 1991 by Kounis and Zavras and is also known as allergic angina syndrome or allergy myocardial infarction. It is a rare, and frequently undiagnosed syndrome that is characterized by an anaphylactic reaction. Allergens cause massive degranulation of mast cells leading to coronary spasm, microvascular angina, and/or endothelial dysfunction with myocardial infarction. The annual incidence of severe, life-threatening anaphylaxis with circulatory symptoms is about 7.9-9.6 cases per 100,000 people. More than 300 cases of KS have been described after exposure to various agents such as drugs, insect venoms, food, or medicated stents. Although the incidence of KS is very low, the incidence of myocardial infarction due to anaphylaxis secondary to gadolinium is even lower, reported in a range of 0.002-0.01%. Memory and learning allow animals to appropriate certain properties of nature with which they can navigate in it successfully. Memory is acquired slowly and consists of two major phases, a fragile early phase (short-term memory, <4 h) and a more robust and long-lasting late one (long-term memory, >4 h). Erythropoietin (EPO) prolongs memory from 24 to 72 h when animals are trained for 5 min in a place recognition task but not when training lasted 3 min (short-term memory). It is not known whether it promotes the formation of remote memory (≥21 days). We address whether the systemic administration of EPO can convert a short-term memory into a long-term remote memory, and the neural plasticity mechanisms involved. We evaluated the effect of training duration (3 or 5 min) on the expression of endogenous EPO and its receptor to shed light on the role of EPO in coordinating mechanisms of neural plasticity using a single-trial spatial learning test. We administered EPO 10 min post-training and evaluated memory after 24 h, 96 h, 15 days, or 21 days. We also determined the effect of EPO administered 10 min after training on the expression of arc and bdnf during retrieval at 24 h and 21 days. Data show that learning induces EPO/EPOr expression increase linked to memory extent, exogenous EPO prolongs memory up to 21 days; and prefrontal cortex bdnf expression at 24 h and in the hippocampus at 21 days, whereas arc expression increases at 21 days in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex., (© 2024 Wiley Periodicals LLC.)

The Moberg flap has been used to achieve coverage of amputations of the thumb's fingertip. However, it has been associated with flexion contractures of the interphalangeal (IP) joint of the thumb. A modification of the surgical technique is presented, adding a distal V-Y flap to allow greater advancement, and avoiding IP joint contractures. The proposed surgical technique is presented, and a case series of patients treated with this modification is introduced. A total of 5 patients underwent this surgical technique. All the flaps healed without complications. No patient presented stiffness or flexion contracture of the thumb´s IP joint. There were no cases of neuropathic pain and the 2-point discrimination over the flap was 6.8 mm on average. Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) holds a great promise for cancer patients, however, due to the hypoxic characteristics of most solid tumors and the limited penetration depth of light in tissues, the extensive clinical application of PDT is limited. Herein, we report microwave induced copper-cysteamine (Cu-Cy) nanoparticles-based PDT as a promising cancer treatment to overcome cancer resistance in combination with ferroptosis. The treatment efficiency of Cu-Cy-mediated microwave dynamic therapy (MWDT) tested on HCT15 colorectal cancer (CRC) cells via cell titer-blue cell viability assay and live/dead assay reveal that Cu-Cy upon MW irradiation can effectively destroy HCT15 CRC cells with average IC-50 values of 20 μg/mL. The cytotoxicity of Cu-Cy to tumor cells after MW stimulation can be alleviated by ferroptosis inhibitor. Furthermore, Cu-Cy mediated MWDT could deplete glutathione peroxide 4 (GPX4) and enhance lipid peroxides (LPO) and malondialdehyde (MDA). Our findings demonstrate that MW-activated Cu-Cy killed CRC cells by inducing ferroptosis. The superior in vivo antitumor efficacy of the Cu-Cy was corroborated by a HCT15 tumor-bearing mice model. Immunohistochemical experiments showed that the GPX4 expression level in Cu-Cy + MW group was significantly lower than that in other groups. Overall, these findings demonstrate that Cu-Cy nanoparticles have a safe and promising clinical application prospect in MWDT for deep-seated tumors and effectively inhibit tumor cell proliferation by inducing ferroptosis, which provides a potential solution for cancer resistance., (© 2022 The Authors.)

Macrodactyly is a serious and rare disease and considered one of the most difficult pathologies to treat. There is no rule and the treatment for each patient must be tailor-made, depending on the location and degree of macrodactyly. Although amputation is a valid option for adult patients, nail preservation and reconstruction are important and has a direct impact on the treatment outcome, both aesthetically and on the patient's self-esteem. We have used a wide, z-shaped fingertip flap associated with the preservation of a nail quadrant, bone shortening and distal interphalangeal arthrodesis. We have obtained good functional and aesthetic outcomes with this 'quadrant flap' technique. The technique allows decreasing digit size and volume and reconstruction of the nail complex and finger pulp. Level of Evidence: Level V (Therapeutic).

Highly sensitive and reliable detection of multiple myeloma remains a major challenge in liquid biopsy. Herein, for the first time, quantum dot-molecular beacon (QD-MB) functionalized MoS 2 (QD-MB @MoS 2 ) fluorescent probes were designed for the dual detection of multiple myeloma (MM)-related miRNA-155 and miRNA-150. The results indicate that the two probes can effectively detect miRNA-155 and miRNA-150 simultaneously with satisfactory recovery rates, and the limit of detections (LODs) of miRNA-155 and miRNA-150 in human serum are low to 7.19 fM and 5.84 fM, respectively. Aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) exhibit efficient cytotoxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation capability and unique light-up features in the aggregated state, which have been well explored in image-guided photodynamic therapy (PDT). However, the limited penetration depth of light in tissue severely hinders AIEgens as a candidate for primary or adjunctive therapy for clinical applications. Coincidentally, microwaves (MWs) show a distinct advantage for deeper penetration depth in tissues than light. Herein, for the first time, we report AIEgen-mediated microwave dynamic therapy (MWDT) for cancer treatment. We found that two AIEgens ( TPEPy-I and TPEPy-PF6 ) served as a new type of microwave (MW) sensitizers to produce ROS, including singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), resulting in efficient destructions of cancer cells. The results of 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) and live/dead assays reveal that the two AIEgens when activated by MW irradiation can effectively kill cancer cells with average IC-50 values of 2.73 and 3.22 μM, respectively. Background: The Kapandji scale has 10 levels and includes abduction, rotation and flexion movements. Assessing children with thumb hypoplasia, this scale is poorly understood and confusing. The objective of the study is to evaluate an opposition scale simpler and understandable for children. Methods: It is a validation study of a simplified scale to qualify the opposition of the thumb, in order to asses only the abduction - rotation but not the flexion of the metacarpo-phalangeal (MP) or interphalangeal (IF) joint. The proposed classification goes from 0 to 3 degrees, where 0: No opposition, 1: The thumb touches the middle phalanx of the 2nd finger, 2: the thumb touches the pulp of the 2nd finger and 3: the thumb touches the pulp of the 5th finger. 10 patients with thumb hypoplasia were analyzed by 9 hand surgeons and 9 orthopedic surgeons. Results: The intraclass correlation coefficient shows a very good inter-observer reliability with a kappa of 0.991 ( p = 0.000). When correlated by groups, the finding were very good between the hand surgeons group k = 0.980 ( p = 0.000) and the orthopedic surgeons group 0.974 ( p = 0.000). At 6 weeks a new evaluation was made, the intra-observer reliability was excellent k = 0.995 ( p = 0.000). Conclusions: The proposed scale for the evaluation of the abductionrotation of the thumb is validated and useful in the evaluation of the results of a thumb opposition transfer with a good inter-observer and intra-observer reliability between orthopedic and hand surgeons.

Upper brachial plexus injury or isolated lesions of the axillary nerve (AN) compromise shoulder functionality significantly. Different surgical techniques have been described for selective reconstruction of the AN, with good results especially in association with repair of the suprascapular nerve. The objective of this study is to describe the transfer of motor fascicles of the median nerve to the AN by an axillary approach in cadavers and the clinical results in 2 patients. Dissections were performed on 5 cadavers, followed by identification and dissection of the AN and its divisions before entering the quadrangular space. We standardized the surgical technique in which the median nerve was first identified and then an intrafascicular dissection was performed. Then we harvested a fascicle and transferred it to the anterolateral branch of the AN. Two patients underwent an operation; at 2 years of follow-up, average abduction of 125 degrees and external rotation of 95 degrees were observed. In conclusion, the transfer of motor fascicles of the median nerve to the AN by an axillary approach could be an alternative technique for the deltoid reinnervation in upper brachial plexus injury. Some advantages are the proximity of the donor nerve to the receptor nerve and the low morbidity of the target muscles of the donor nerve. We report a novel FeS₂ loaded large SiO₂ sphere (diameter of 3 cm) via double immobilization with (3-mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane (KH590) as a highly efficient, stable, and tweezers-recoverable heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst (FeS₂/KH590/SiO₂@KH590). Notably, as-prepared composite catalyst exhibits a significant recycling improvement (10 runs) over free FeS₂ powder (3 runs). The outstanding recyclability and stability of FeS₂/KH590/SiO₂@KH590 can be attributed to the passivation of FeS₂ nanoparticles on SiO₂ surface by KH590 and subsequent prevention of Fe 2+ leaching. Overall, our work provides a new avenue towards fabricating composite Fenton-like catalyst with high stability, enhanced recyclability and the advantage of easy separation.

Photothermal ablation therapy (PTA) has been widely reported; however, it is not possible to predict the internal temperature of the tumor in real time that causes ineffective treatment and normal tissue burns. Here, we have designed a photothermal therapy strategy under real-time temperature monitoring by injecting gold nanorods (AuNRs) and NaYF₄: Yb 3+ /Er 3+ into the tumor site where AuNRs are used for PTA of cancer cells by converting the absorbed energy into heat and using Yb 3+ , Er 3+ -NaYF ₄ phosphors to monitor the temperature inside the tumor. Our experiments confirm the effectiveness of this strategy, which is expected to be an aid in the development of real-time temperature monitoring and effective photothermal therapy for the treatment of cancers.

Objectives: The primary aim of this study was to identify the ease and safety of office-based lower airway endoscopy (OLAE) in patients with and without comorbidities. In addition, we identified the most common indications for OLAE and the associated diagnosis., Methods: A retrospective review on 567 patients and 706 in-office flexible fiberoptic procedures was performed. Using a previously established grading system, the ease of visualization of the subglottis, trachea, and carina was assessed, in addition to the overall ease of the exam., Results: Four hundred and eighty-eight videos were available for review. Of those, 105 videos included an OLAE, accounting for 21.5% of all procedures. Laryngomalacia was the most common diagnosis in 35 of 105 (36%) OLAE. For all laryngomalacia cases, the overall ease was found to be on average 2.15 (standard error 0.12). Fisher exact testing showed a statistical significance in the ability to visualize the trachea between the types of Laryngomalacia (LM) (P = .035). Fisher exact testing was performed comparing LM types I, II, or III, and combined types of LM; no statistical difference was found between groups. In 4.76% of OLAE procedures, a subglottic pathology was diagnosed. Comorbidities were found in OLAE 26 of 105 patients. There were no complications identified., Conclusion: We found OLAE more challenging than previously reported. OLAE of combined types of laryngomalacia was subjectively more difficult, but this difference did not reach statistical significance. OLAE continues to be a safe alternative to operative laryngoscopy in pediatric patients and appears safe in those with comorbidities when precautions are taken., Level of Evidence: 4. Herein, we report cost effective and body compatible CuS nanoparticles (NPs) derived from a single source precursor as photothermal agent for healing deep cancer and photocatalytic remediation of organic carcinogens. These NPs efficiently kill MCF7 cells (both in vivo and in vitro) under NIR irradiation by raising the temperature of tumor cells. Such materials can be used for the treatment of deep cancer as they can produce a heating effect using high wavelength and deeply penetrating NIR radiation. Furthermore, CuS NPs under solar light irradiation efficiently convert p-nitrophenol (PNP), an environmental carcinogen, to p-aminophenol (PAP) of pharmaceutical implication. In a nutshell, CuS can be used for the treatment of deep cancer and for the remediation of carcinogenic pollutants. Wrist treatment in spastic cerebral palsy includes splints, botulinum toxin, tendon transfers, tendon lengthening, capsular liberations, and arthrodesis. A well-indicated wrist arthrodesis corrects deformity improving function and cosmetic appearance in patients with fixed deformities. It is indicated in patients with cerebral palsy, older than 12 years with a fixed deformity in wrist flexion. We report 11 clinical cases with the wrist arthrodesis with a plate of 3.5 with 2.7 mm by dorsal approach and technical resources to minimize the complications of tendon irritation and dorsal discomfort. We present an illustrative clinical case. It is a known procedure, its execution must be careful to avoid complications.

Recently we provided data showing that amygdala stimulation can ameliorate spatial memory impairments in rats with lesion in the fimbria-fornix (FF). The mechanisms for this improvement involve early gene expression and synthesis of BDNF, MAP-2, and GAP43 in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex. Now we have studied which brain structures are activated by the amygdala using c-Fos as a marker of neural activation. First, we studied neuronal activation after tetanic stimulation to the amygdala in intact rats. We then carried out a second study in FF-lesioned rats in which the amygdala was stimulated 15 min after daily spatial memory training in the water maze. Our results showed that amygdala stimulation produces widespread brain activation, that includes cortical, thalamic, and brain stem structures. Activation was particularly intense in the dentate gyrus and the prefrontal cortex. Training in the water maze increased c-Fos positive nuclei in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus and in medial prefrontal cortex. Amygdala stimulation to trained FF-lesioned rats induced an increase of neural activity in the dentate gyrus and medial prefrontal cortex relative to the FF-lesioned, but not stimulated group, like the c-Fos activity seen in trained control rats. Neurotoxic lesion of the pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN) is known to cause subtle motor dysfunctions. However, motor coordination during advance on a discontinuous and elevated surface has not been studied. It is also not known whether there are changes in the mRNA expression of nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2 ( Nrf2 ) in nigral tissue., Methods: The effects of the unilateral neurotoxic lesion of the PPN in motor coordination evaluated through grid test and Nrf2 mRNA expression in nigral tissue were evaluated. Two experimental designs (ED) were organized: ED#1 behavioral study (7 and 30 days after PPN lesion) and ED#2 molecular biology study (24 h, 48 h and 7 days) after PPN lesion., Results: ED#1-The number of faults made with left limbs, were significant higher in the lesioned groups ( p < 0.01) both 7 and 30 days post-lesion. The number of failures made by the right limbs, was also significantly higher ( p < 0.05) vs. control groups. ED#2- Nrf2 mRNA expression showed an increase 24 h after PPN injury ( p < 0.01), followed by a peak of expression 48 h post injury ( p < 0.001)., Conclusions: Disorders of motor coordination associated with PPN injury are bilateral. The increased Nrf2 mRNA expression could represent an adaptive response to oxidative stress in the nigral tissue following pontine injury.

Wavefront coding is a technique that combines optical phase elements and digital signal processing in order to increase the effective depth of focus of optical systems. The success of wavefront coding lies in the design of a suitable phase mask placed at the system's aperture. This element allows for image formation invariant under the effects of different second-order optical aberrations. In optical systems limited by temporally or spatially varying high-order aberrations, the use of wavefront coding has not been fully demonstrated. Here we propose the choice of Jacobi-Fourier shaped phase masks to produce sharp and clear retinal images of living eyes. To demonstrate the potential use of the technique, we analyze the performance of the Jacobi-Fourier phase masks through experimental simulations to alleviate aberrations for different eye aberrations. We will show that the best mask choice is robust to noise while keeping acceptable resolution and reducing image artefacts.

Herein, for the first time, we demonstrate that the combination of copper-cysteamine (Cu-Cy) nanoparticles (NPs) and potassium iodide (KI) can significantly inactivate both Gram-positive MRSA and Gram-negative E. coli. To uncover the mystery of the killing, the interaction of KI with Cu-Cy NPs was investigated systematically and the products from their interaction were identified. No copper ions were released after adding KI to Cu-Cy NPs in cell-free medium and, therefore, it is reasonable to conclude that the Fenton reaction induced by copper ions is not responsible for the bacterial killing. Based on the observations, we propose that the major killing mechanism involves the generation of toxic species, such as hydrogen peroxide, triiodide ions, iodide ions, singlet oxygen, and iodine molecules. Objective: People with mental illness frequently have trouble obtaining and keeping competitive employment and struggle with on-the-job performance. To address these issues, the manualized, group-based, 12-session Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Work Success (CBTw) intervention was developed and tested in an open trial. Although posttreatment work outcomes were promising, lasting effects associated with the intervention are unknown., Method: This article presents the 6-month posttreatment work outcomes of the open trial of CBTw in 52 adults with mental illness who were concurrently receiving VA vocational services. Work outcomes included work status, hours worked and wages earned, steady work status, and work performance and effectiveness. Data were analyzed using repeated measures analysis of variances (ANOVAs) and within groups t tests., Results: Findings demonstrate that 75% of unemployed participants at baseline obtained competitive work during the study period. During the 6-month follow-up period, 73% of workers attained steady work status (i.e., working at least 50% of the follow-up period). In addition, during the 6-month follow-up period, working participants averaged significantly more hours of work per week and higher wages earned per hour as compared with the baseline period and the 12-week postintervention period. Finally, among workers, reports of work effectiveness remained high at 6 months and work productivity disruptions remained low at follow-up., Conclusions and Implications for Practice: These findings suggest that CBTw may potentially be a useful tool to enhance the effects of vocational programs. Future work should test CBTw in a randomized controlled trial and examine strategies for implementation in real-world vocational service settings. Introduction: Pronator syndrome has classically required open surgery that leaves a large scar; initial endoscopic techniques required approaches of an average 4cm without achieving release of all structures. The purpose of this study was to describe a new endoscopic approach that allows the median nerve to be safely and completely decompressed, leaving a smaller and less visible scar., Methods: Description of a new approach for decompression of the median nerve in the proximal third of the forearm with minimal incision and endoscopic technique in cryopreserved cadaveric specimens, describing incision, endoscopic anatomy, safe corridors and decompression sites., Results: In 20 elbows of cadavers, an endoscopic approach of the median nerve in the proximal forearm with a 4mm endoscope and 0° of angulation was performed. The advantages and limitations of the technique and surgical details are presented for release in the most common compression points of the nerve in the forearm. We performed this technique in 3 patients with good results without complications., Discussion: Release of the median nerve and section of potential aponeurotic compression structures by endoscopy is possible. The ulnar head of the pronator and the aponeurotic arch of the flexor digitorum superficialis are frequently implicated in the syndrome. The scar is aesthetically good. Background and Objectives : The knowledge that the cholinergic neurons from pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN) are vulnerable to the degeneration in early stages of the Parkinson disease progression has opened new perspectives to the development of experimental model focused in pontine lesions that could increase the risk of nigral degeneration. In this context it is known that PPN lesioned rats exhibit early changes in the gene expression of proteins responsible for dopaminergic homeostasis. At the same time, it is known that nicotinic cholinergic receptors (nAChRs) mediate the excitatory influence of pontine-nigral projection. However, the effect of PPN injury on the expression of transcription factors that modulate dopaminergic neurotransmission in the adult brain as well as the α7 nAChRs gene expression has not been studied. The main objective of the present work was the study of the effects of the unilateral neurotoxic lesion of PPN in nuclear receptor-related factor 1 (Nurr1), paired-like homeodomain transcription factor 3 (Pitx3), and α7 nAChRs mRNA expression in nigral tissue. Materials and Methods : The molecular biology studies were performed by means of RT-PCR. The following experimental groups were organized: Non-treated rats, N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA)-lesioned rats, and Sham operated rats. Experimental subjects were sacrificed 24 h, 48 h and seven days after PPN lesion. Results : Nurr1 mRNA expression, showed a significant increase both 24 h ( p < 0.001) and 48 h ( p < 0.01) after PPN injury. Pitx3 mRNA expression evidenced a significant increase 24 h ( p < 0.001) followed by a significant decrease 48 h and seven days after PPN lesion ( p < 0.01). Finally, the α7 nAChRs nigral mRNA expression remained significantly diminished 24 h, 48 h ( p < 0.001), and 7 days ( p < 0.01) after PPN neurotoxic injury. Copper is an essential element in many biological processes and plays an important role in carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. Excess or deficiency of Cu ions can cause disturbances in cellular homeostasis and damage the central nervous system. Here, for the first time, two functionalized silica gel (SG-A and SG-B) adsorbents were prepared and tested for copper detection via the reactions of chlorinated silica gel with two novel D-π-A Schiff base compounds: 2-amino-3-(quinolin-2-ylmethyleneamino)maleonitrile (A) and 2-(4-(diethylamino)-2-hydroxybenzylideneamino)-3-aminomaleonitrile (B) in the thionyl chloride solution, respectively. SG-A and SG-B as adsorbents filled in a microcolumn were used to enrich trace Cu ions in foods and water with the detection of flame atomic absorption spectrometry. Because of the strong coordination between two D-π-A Schiff base compounds and Cu 2+ ions, the stable heterocyclic Cu 2+ -SG-A/B complex is formed. For a sample volume of 30 mL, detection limits of 0.09 μg L -1 and 0.15 μg L -1 have been achieved. The results of selectivity study show that the two adsorbents can selectively extract Cu 2+ in complex matrixes with other metal cations. The methods have been successfully applied to the determination of Cu 2+ content in various real samples, and the detection sensitivity that we report here is better than most results reported using modified silica gels.

Introduction: radial longitudinal deficiency (RLD) includes bone, musculotendinous and neurovascular abnormalities of multifactorial aetiology of the radial side of the upper extremity. Treatment includes improving the length of the limb, the appearance and functioning of the hand. The aim of this study was to present our experience in a series of patients attended over the past 15 years and to describe the clinical and radiological results., Methodology: a retrospective study of patients with RLD between 2000 and 2016. Variables were analyzed and age associations were identified at the time of surgery, sex, laterality, type of deformity according to the modified Bayne-Klug classification, surgical technique, physis damage, associated diseases, functional and radiological results., Results: 47 cases of 65 met the inclusion criteria. The average age of surgery was 19 months, 61% female. According to classification 60% were type IV, type III 19%, type 0 in 17% and type I in 4%. The intervention was centralization 72.3%, radialization 8.5% and one case of lengthening. Ulna osteotomy was performed in 55.3%. There was damage to the physis in 31%. The postoperative radiological position was neutral in 48.9%., Conclusions: In patients with centralization at 1year, good clinical and radiological correction were observed, however this was lost over time. The management of soft tissues prior to centralization is believed to give better results. The aims of the present work were to evaluate the exploratory activity in Sprague-Dawley rats, as well as to analyze the nigral and striatal mRNA expression of the plasticity-related genes bdnf and arc after L-buthionine sulfoximine (BSO) injection into substantia nigra compacta. Lesioned rats traveled less distance in open field but did not show a decline in the novel object recognition test. On the other hand, RT-PCR analysis showed overexpression of striatal arc 24 h post-lesion; no significant changes in bdnf expression were observed in nigral or striatal tissue. These results suggest that intranigral BSO injection causes impairment in exploratory behavior in these rats, by affecting locomotion, which is associated with changes in striatal synaptic plasticity., (Copyright © 2018. The aim of the study was to compare three methods for high-score measurement in children, Caton-Deschamps, Blackburne-Peel and Koshino-Sugimoto, to determine the normal value of each method in a group of normal children., Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study on knee x-rays of normal children. Three orthopaedic surgeons measured the Caton-Deschamps, Blackburne-Peel and Koshino-Sugimoto indices. Concordance was assessed using the intraclass correlation coefficient. For interobserver variability, the measurements of each observer for each index were compared and for intraobserver variability, the coefficient between the 2 measurements was calculated by the same observer at 2 different times., Results: 140 knee X-rays divided into 4 age groups were obtained. For the Blackburne-Peel index, an average median of the 3 observers was obtained of 1.07 and with P5-P95 (0.76-1.60). For the Caton-Deschamps index, an average median of the three observers of 1.22 was obtained and with P5-P95 (0.91-1.70). For the Koshino-Sugimoto index, we obtained an average median of the 3 observers of 1.16 and with P5-P95 (0.99-1.36)., Discussion: This study shows that the Koshino-Sugimoto index had the highest reliability, reproducibility and similarity in the population studied, both intra-observer and inter-observer. Huntington's disease (HD) is an inherited, neurodegenerative disorder that results from the degeneration of striatal neurons, mainly GABAergic neurons. The study of neurochemical activity has provided reliable markers to explain motor disorders. To treat neurodegenerative diseases, stem cell transplants with bone marrow (BM) have been performed for several decades. In this work we determine the effect of mononuclear bone marrow cell (mBMC) transplantation on the rotational behavior and neurochemical activity in a model of Huntington's disease in rats. Four experimental groups were organized: Group I: Control animals ( n = 5); Group II: Lesion with quinolinic acid (QA) in the striatum ( n = 5); Group III: Lesion with QA and transplant with mBMC ( n = 5); Group IV: Lesion with QA and transplant with culture medium (Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium (DMEM) injection) ( n = 5). The rotational activity induced by D-amphetamine was evaluated and the concentration of the neurotransmitter amino acids (glutamate and GABA) was studied. The striatal cell transplantation decreases the rotations induced by D-amphetamine ( p < 0.04, Wilcoxon matched pairs test) and improves the changes produced in the levels of neurotransmitters studied. This work suggests that the loss of GABAergic neurons in the brain of rats lesioned with AQ produces behavioral and neurochemical alterations that can be reversed with the use of bone marrow mononuclear cell transplants.

The relationships between affective and cognitive processes are an important issue of present neuroscience. The amygdala, the hippocampus and the prefrontal cortex appear as main players in these mechanisms. We have shown that post-training electrical stimulation of the basolateral amygdala (BLA) speeds the acquisition of a motor skill, and produces a recovery in behavioral performance related to spatial memory in fimbria-fornix (FF) lesioned animals. BLA electrical stimulation rises bdnf RNA expression, BDNF protein levels, and arc RNA expression in the hippocampus. In the present paper we have measured the levels of one presynaptic protein (GAP-43) and one postsynaptic protein (MAP-2) both involved in synaptogenesis to assess whether structural neuroplastic mechanisms are involved in the memory enhancing effects of BLA stimulation. A single train of BLA stimulation produced in healthy animals an increase in the levels of GAP-43 and MAP-2 that lasted days in the hippocampus and the prefrontal cortex. In FF-lesioned rats, daily post-training stimulation of the BLA ameliorates the memory deficit of the animals and induces an increase in the level of both proteins. An increasing number of reports sustain a possible role of erythropoietin (EPO) as neuroprotective agent. In two previous articles we have evaluated EPO as plasticity promoting agent, and to contribute the restoration of brain function affected by acquired damage. We have shown that EPO is able to induce an increased synaptic efficacy in vivo along with a plasticity promoting effect. In the Morris water maze EPO administration to fimbria-fornix lesioned male rats induces a significant improvement of their spatial memory, affected by the lesion. Singularly, EPO was only effective when administered shortly after training (10 min) but not after several hours (5 h), suggesting a specific EPO effect on time dependent plasticity process. In the present paper we have expanded this line of evidence using a low stress paradigm of object placement recognition in lesioned and healthy male rats. The memory trace in this model is short-lasting; animals could recognize the change in object position when tested 24 h after, but not 48 or 72 h after the acquisition session. EPO administration 10 min after acquisition significantly prolongs retention to, at least, 72 h in healthy rats. No effect was seen if EPO was administered 5 h after training, suggesting a specific EPO modulatory effect on the consolidation process. Remarkably, early EPO treatment to fimbria fornix lesioned animals reverts the memory deficit caused by the lesion. Background: The degeneration of the pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN) precedes the degeneration of the nigral cells in the pre-symptomatic stages of Parkinson's disease (PD). Although the literature recognizes that a lesion of the PPN increases the vulnerability of dopaminergic cells, it is unknown if this risk is associated with the loss of capability of handling the dopaminergic function., Methods: In this paper, the effects of a unilateral neurotoxic lesion of the PPN in tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), vesicular monoamine transporter 2 (VMAT2) and dopamine transporter (DAT) mRNA expression in nigrostriatal tissue were evaluated. Three experimental groups were organized: non-treated rats, NMDA-lesioned rats and Sham-operated rats., Results: Seven days after the PPN lesion, in nigral tissue, TH mRNA expression was higher in comparison with control groups ( p < 0.05); in contrast, VMAT2 mRNA expression showed a significant decrease ( p < 0.01). DAT mRNA expression showed a significant decrease ( p < 0.001) in the striatal tissue. Comparing nigral neuronal density of injured and control rats revealed no significant difference seven days post-PPN injury., Conclusions: Findings suggest that the PPN lesion modifies the mRNA expression of the proteins associated with dopaminergic homeostasis at nigrostriatal level. Introduction: Diaphyseal fractures of the forearm comprise 6%-10% of all fractures in children. The treatment depends on the age and type of displacement, and conservative and surgical management with fixation of intramedullary nails, among other techniques, is valid. The aim is to show the radiological and functional outcomes, and complications of intramedullary fixation with Kirschner nails in children., Materials and Methods: A retrospective descriptive case series of patients treated with intramedullary fixation of forearm fractures. The radiological and functional results, and complications are correlated., Results: Of the 117 patients operated, 59 met the inclusion criteria. The average age was 10 years. Eighty-four point seven percent were males and the left side was the most affected (62.7%). In 88.1% both bones were fractured and 11 cases had open fractures. An open reduction was performed in 72.8% of the cases, the main indications for this being instability, failed reduction and refracture. There were 52 excellent outcomes, 2 good, and 4 regular and 1 bad. There were 13.5% minor complications., Discussion: This study shows that intramedullary fixation with Kirschner nails in radius and ulna diaphysis fractures in children is a safe, low-cost procedure and offers adequate short and medium term functional outcomes, with a low prevalence of serious complications with only 6 cases of non-consolidation and refracture. Larger preoperative angulations in the anteroposterior and lateral planes, and lateral postoperative angulations, could be considered predictors of less satisfactory functional results., (Copyright © 2017 SECOT. Pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN) has been considered a critically important region in the regulation of some of the physiological functions that fail during the progression of Parkinson's disease (PD). In this paper, the effects of unilateral neurotoxic lesion of the PPN [through the injection of N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) solution (concentration: 0.1M; volume: 0.5µL)] in motor execution and gait disorders and the changes in cellular and molecular indicators in rat nigral tissue were evaluated. The motor execution was assessed using the beam test (BT) and the gait disorders by footprint test. Glutathione (GSH) concentrations, acetyl cholinesterase enzymatic activity (AChE EA), and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) mRNA expression in nigral tissue were analyzed. NMDA-lesioned rats showed fine motor dysfunction with a significant increase in the slow (p≤0.01) and fast movement (p≤0.01) time and in path deviation (p≤0.01) on the smaller diameter beams. Moreover, NMDA-lesioned rats exhibited an imprecise path with moments of advances and setbacks, alternating with left and right deviations, suspensions, and inverted positions. Footprint test revealed slight gait disorders, which were manifested by a reduction in the left and right stride lengths, the intra-step distance, and the support area (p≤0.01). Biochemical studies showed that 48h after the PPN neurotoxic injury, the GSH concentrations and BDNF expression were significantly increased (p≤0.01). These variables returned to normal values 7days after the PPN lesion; the AChE EA showed a significant increase at this time. Cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs) have important roles in regulating key checkpoints between stages of the cell cycle. Their activity is tightly regulated through a variety of mechanisms, including through binding with cyclin proteins and the Cdc2/Cdc28 kinase subunit (CKS), and their phosphorylation at specific amino acids. Studies of the components involved in cell cycle control in parasitic protozoa are limited. Trichomonas vaginalis is the causative agent of trichomoniasis in humans and is therefore important in public health; however, some of the basic biological processes used by this organism have not been defined. Here, we characterized proteins potentially involved in cell cycle regulation in T. vaginalis. Three genes encoding protein kinases were identified in the T. vaginalis genome, and the corresponding recombinant proteins (TvCRK1, TvCRK2, TvCRK5) were studied. These proteins displayed similar sequence features to CDKs. Two genes encoding CKSs were also identified, and the corresponding recombinant proteins were found to interact with TvCRK1 and TvCRK2 by a yeast two-hybrid system. One putative cyclin B protein from T. vaginalis was found to bind to and activate the kinase activities of TvCRK1 and TvCRK5, but not TvCRK2. This work is the first characterization of proteins involved in cell cycle control in T. vaginalis.

We report on the diagnostic capability of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based tracking of ferumoxytol-labeled human neural progenitor cells (hNPCs) transplanted into the porcine spinal cord. hNPCs prelabeled with two doses of ferumoxytol nanoparticles (hNPC-F Low and hNPC-F High ) were injected into the ventral horn of the spinal cord in healthy minipigs. Ferumoxytol-labeled grafts were tracked in vivo up to 105 days after transplantation with MRI. Injection accuracy was assessed in vivo at day 14 and was predictive of "on" or "off" target cell graft location assessed by histology. No difference in long-term cell survival, assessed by quantitative stereology, was observed among hNPC-F Low , hNPC-F High , or control grafts. Histological iron colocalized with MRI signal and engrafted human nuclei. Furthermore, the ferumoxytol-labeled cells retained nanoparticles and function in vivo. This approach represents an important leap forward toward facilitating translation of cell-tracking technologies to clinical trials by providing a method of assessing transplantation accuracy, delivered dose, and potentially cell survival. The volar V-Y flap is used in transverse or dorsal oblique amputations in fingertip injuries; however, its use is contraindicated in patients with volar oblique amputations and cannot advance distally enough to cover the defect. The aim of this report is to describe a technique of double V-Y flap to cover fingertip defects in which a simple V-Y flap is not enough. This technique allows advancement between 30% and 50% farther than the original, simple V-Y flap. Report of cases a series of fingertip amputation covered with this technique. This technique was performed in 7 patients between 25 and 64 years old, with transverse, volar and dorsal oblique defects in the fingertip. The advancing of the flap was between 3 and 5 mm. There were no infections or necrosis of the flaps. In all patients there were acceptable aesthetic results with 2-point discrimination between 4 and 6 mm in the proximal flap and up to 10 mm in the distal flap with a minimum follow-up of 6 months. With this double V-Y flap, we have seen a good coverage even in volar oblique amputation. In addition, it is possible to advance up to 5 mm more with this second V-Y flap without compromising the vitality of the flap. It is a simple and reproducible technique that can be used on any finger, with good results, without flap necrosis.

The independent neurovascular anatomy of the long head of the triceps brachii and its suitability as a free muscle transfer have been extensively studied. Instead muscle transposition of the long head of the triceps brachii to enhance elbow flexion has been rarely described. We describe in this paper two cases of injury of brachial plexus sequel in which transposition was performed only on the long head of the triceps. The elbow flexion was improved, the extension was preserved.

In the distal radius fracture requires radiographic views that allow you to see the articular surface without interposition. The objective was to determine whether lateral radiographic projections 7 and 22° improve the analysis of this surface., Method: Case series study with radiographs of healthy and operated patients, in order to identify the lunate and scaphoid facets in lateral and anteroposterior projections. Qualitative analysis was made on the radiographs of the distal radius with wedges of 7 and 22° in the lateral views and 11° in the anteroposterior view., Results: There were evaluated 14 radiographs of the distal radius of healthy volunteers and 10 patients with distal radius fractures who recieved surgery with internal fixation, and also two anatomical models. In 14 healthy and 10 patients, it was found that the views at 7 and 22° can be better appreciated radio lunate and radio scaphoid surface respectively, observing images with less overlapping in the radiograph of 22° in both groups., Discussion: Radiographic views are important to determine the immediate results of fixation on a distal radius fracture. We observe that the lateral view at 7° is better to show the screws on the lunate facet of the radius. The lateral view at 22° is better to show the facet of the radius with the scaphoid. Finally, the anteroposterior projection at 11° allows us to see the radio carpal joint with lower image overlay.

Objective: Few studies have evaluated the radiologic characteristics of the development of the anterior tibial tuberosity. This study aimed to evaluate the radiologic characteristics of the anterior tibial tuberosity in a pediatric population broken down into age groups., Material and Methods: We assessed 210 plain-film X-rays of the knee from patients aged from 10 to 17 years, divided into groups according to age and sex, for the presence of ossification of the anterior tibial tuberosity, the distance between the anterior tibial tuberosity and the metaphysis, and fusion with the epiphysis., Results: At 10 years of age, the anterior tibial tuberosity was ossified in 50% of the girls but in only 25% of the boys. In all the girls, the anterior tibial tuberosity was ossified at 11 years, fusion of the anterior tibial tuberosity with the epiphysis had started at 12 years, and fusion was complete by 17 years. In boys, the process is delayed by one year compared to girls. A single center of ossification was found in all cases., Conclusion: The ossification of the anterior tibial tuberosity starts distally, then the proximal part fuses with the rest of the epiphysis, and finally the distal part fuses with the tibia. Amygdala seems to promote the consolidation of plastic modification in different brain areas and these long-term brain changes require a rapid de novo RNA and protein synthesis. We have previously shown that basolateral amygdala electrical stimulation produces a partial recovery of spatial memory in fimbria-fornix lesioned animals and it is also able to increase the BDNF protein content in the hippocampus. The emerging question is whether these increased BDNF protein content arises from previously synthesized RNA or from de novo RNA expression. Now we address the question if amygdala electrical stimulation 15min after daily water maze training produces a rapid de novo RNA synthesis in the hippocampus, a critical brain area for spatial memory recovery in fimbria-fornix lesioned animals. In addition, we also study RNA arc expression, a gene which is essential for memory and neural plasticity processes. To this purpose, we study amygdala stimulation effects on the expression of plasticity related-early-genes bdnf and arc in the hippocampus of fimbria-fornix lesioned animals trained in a water-maze for 4days. We also checked on the expression of both genes in non-lesioned, untrained animals (acute condition) at 0.5, 1, 2 and 24h after basolateral amygdala electrical stimulation. Our data from trained animals confirm that daily amygdala electrical stimulation 15min after water maze training produces a partial memory recovery and that is coupled to an increase of bdnf and arc genes expression in the hippocampus. Additionally, the acute study shows that a single session of amygdala stimulation induces a transient increase of both genes (peaking at 30min). These results confirm the memory improving effect of amygdala stimulation in fimbria-fornix-lesioned animals and sustain the assumption that the memory improving effect is mediated by newly synthetized BDNF acting on a memory relevant structure like the hippocampus. Background and Objective: Carpal fusions are useful for treating specific carpal disorders, maximizing postoperative wrist motion, hand strength, reducing pain and instability of the joint. The surgeon selects the appropriate treatment by considering the degree of stability, the chronicity of the injury, functional demands of the patient and former patient's outcomes as well. However there are not many studies regarding the load distribution provided by the treatment. So, the purpose of this study is to analyze the load distribution through the wrist joint with an arthrodesis treatment and compare the results with a normal wrist., Method: To this end the rigid body spring model (RBSM) method was used on a three-dimensional model of the wrist joint. The cartilage and ligaments were simulated as springs acting under compression and tension, respectively, while the bones were considered as rigid bodies. To simulate the arthrodesis, the fused bones were considered as a single rigid body., Results: The changes on the load distribution for each arthrodesis agree with the treatment objective, reducing load transmission through a specific articular surface. For example, for SLAC/SNAC II most of the treatments reduced the load transmitted through the radioscaphoid fossae, almost by 8%. However, the capitolunate (CL) arthrodesis was the treatment that managed to keep the load transmitted through the radiolunate joint closer to normal conditions. Also, in treatments where the scaphoid was excised (3-corner, 4-corner and capitolunate arthrodesis), the joint surface between the lunate surface compensates by doubling the transmitted force to the radius., Conclusions: The common arthrodesis for treating SLAC/SNAC II-III, reduces, in fact, the load on the radioscaphoid joint. Alternative treatments that reduce load distribution on the radiocarpal joint should be three corner and capitolunate arthrodesis for treating SLAC/SNAC-II; and for SLAC/SNAC-III four corners with scaphoid excision. On Kienbock's disease. Scaphocapitate (SC) arthrodesis is more effective on reducing the load transmission through the radiolunate and ulnolunate joints. Introduction: The cause of the tunnel syndrome is the entrapment of the posterior interosseous nerve, and can occur due to different anatomic structures, the arcade of Frohse being the main one of them., Purpose: To describe the anatomic relation between the extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB) muscle and the motor branch of the radial nerve at its entrance under the arcade of Frohse., Materials and Methods: An anatomic dissection of 21 elbows of fresh human cadavers was conducted, describing the deep aponeurosis and the superomedial tendinous arch of ECRB and its relation with the motor branch of the radial nerve., Results: In 100% of the specimens, there was evidence of an aponeurosis in the undersurface of ECRB. A tendinous arch at the superomedial margin of ECRB was found in 20 cases (95.2%). In 71.5%, this arch surpassed proximally the arcade of Frohse on an average of 4.5mm (2-10mm); it passes in direct contact with the motor branch of the radial nerve., Conclusions: The extensor carpi radialis brevis muscle courses in a close relation to the motor branch of the radial nerve at its entrance under the arcade of Frohse, and it demonstrates an aponeurosis at its undersurface and a tendinous arch at its medial edge that could play an important role in the development of the radial tunnel syndrome., Level of Evidence: Level IV. Background: Erythropoietin (EPO) upregulates the mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascade, a central signaling pathway in cellular plastic mechanisms, and is critical for normal brain development., Objective: We hypothesized that EPO could modulate the plasticity mechanisms supporting spatial memory recovery in fimbria-fornix-transected animals., Methods: Fimbria-fornix was transected in 3 groups of rats. Seven days later, EPO was injected daily for 4 consecutive days within 10 minutes after training on a water maze task., Results: Our results show that EPO injections 10 minutes after training produced a substantial spatial memory recovery in fimbria-fornix-lesioned animals. In contrast, an EPO injection shortly after fimbria-fornix lesion surgery does not promote spatial-memory recovery. Neither does daily EPO injection 5 hours after the water maze performance. EPO, on the other hand, induced the expression of plasticity-related genes like arc and bdnf, but this effect was independent of training or lesion., Conclusions: This finding supports our working hypothesis that EPO can modulate transient neuroplastic mechanisms triggered by training in lesioned animals.
