This study aimed to investigate the effects of diets supplemented with 25-hydroxycholecalciferol [25-(OH)D3] and additional vitamin E on growth performance, antioxidant capacity, bone development, and carcass characteristics at different stocking densities on commercial broiler farms. A total of 118,800 one-day-old Arbor Acres broilers were assigned to a 2 × 2 factorial treatment consisting of two dietary vitamin levels (5,500 IU vitamin D3 and 60 IU vitamin E: normal diet, using half 25-(OH)D3 as a source of vitamin D3 and an additional 60 IU of vitamin E: 25-(OH)D3+VE diet) and two stocking densities (high density of 20 chickens/m2: HD and 16 chickens/m2: LD). The experiment lasted for 42 d. The results showed that high-density stocking negatively affected the growth performance of broilers during the first four weeks, whereas the vitamin diet treatment significantly improved the feed conversion ratios (FCR) during the last 2 wk. Vitamin diets increased catalase at 14 and 42 d, and the glutathione peroxidase (GSH-px) levels at 42 d in high-density-stocked broilers. The interaction showed that serum vitamin E levels were significantly improved at 28 d of age in high-density-stocked broilers as a result of the vitamin diets. Stocking density and dietary treatments were found to significantly affect bone development, with the vitamin diet significantly increasing metatarsal length and femoral bone strength in broilers from high-density stocking density at 28 d of age. High stocking density increased the proportion of leg muscles and meat yield per square meter. In general, 25-(OH)D3 and additional vitamin E suppressed oxidative stress and ameliorated the negative effects of high-density stocking on bone development in a commercial chicken farm setting. Background: Vitamin D has been extensively studied for its role in immune modulation, especially in the process of tolerance induction. The loss of tolerance towards self-antigens is the basis of several autoimmune disorders; this seems to be related to lower levels of Vitamin D. A neurological autoimmune disorder due to the loss of tolerance to compounds at the neuromuscular junction is known as Myasthenia Gravis (MG)., Objective: To assess the possible correlation between altered Vitamin D levels and MG., Methods: In this systematic review, all recruited studies compared Vitamin D levels in MG patients and healthy controls. Five studies fulfilled the selection criteria and were included in the quantitative synthesis. The meta-analysis involved data of a total population size of 450 individuals, equally divided into 219 cases and 231 controls., Results: The results showed a statistically significant mean difference between cases and controls. The overall mean Vitamin D levels in MG patients were 4.69 ng/ml lower than control levels (95% CI -6.17; -3.22); by applying a random-effects model, this mean difference was estimated at -3.79 (95% CI -7.24; -0.33), after exclusion of data source of heterogeneity and through applying a fixed-effect model, resulted in a mean difference -5.39 (95% CI -6.91; -3.88). Objective: To investigate the association between serum vitamin D (25-hydroxy-cholecalciferol) (25(OH)D) concentrations and cognitive impairment in older adults living in Southern Brazil., Design: Cross-sectional analysis using data from the second follow-up wave of the populational-based EpiFloripa Aging Cohort Study was collected in 2013-2014., Setting: Cognitive impairment was evaluated using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Blood samples were collected to measure serum vitamin D concentrations using a chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay. Vitamin D concentrations were distributed in quartiles (Q1: 4·0-20·7 ng/ml; Q2: 20·8-26·6 ng/ml; Q3: 26·7-32·0 ng/ml and Q4: 32·1-60·1 ng/ml), and its association with cognitive impairment was tested by crude and adjusted logistic regression (sociodemographic, behavioural and health aspects) using Q4 as a reference group., Participants: 200 men and 371 women aged 60 years or older participated in this study., Results: The prevalence of probable cognitive impairment was 21·7 %. Those without cognitive impairment had a higher mean of vitamin D serum concentrations (26·8 v . 24·6, P = 0·014). In the crude analysis, only individuals in Q2 of vitamin D presented an increased risk for probable cognitive impairment compared with Q4 (highest quartile) (OR 2·65, 95 % CI 1·46, 4·81), remaining significant in the adjusted analysis (OR 6·04, 95 % CI 2·78, 13·13). While Q1 (lowest quartile) was not associated in the crude analysis, but when adjusted, an increased risk of cognitive impairment was observed., Conclusion: The lowest quartile of vitamin D was directly associated with probable cognitive impairment in older adults in Southern Brazil. More studies are needed to investigate whether maintaining adequate serum levels may represent a significant factor in preventing age-related neurological disorders as well as to verify the need for new cutoff points for this age group.

Background: The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the etiological agent of coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19), a respiratory infection that, starting from December 2019, has spread around the world in a few months, becoming a pandemic. The lack of initial knowledge on its management has led to a great effort in developing vaccines and in finding therapeutic weapons capable of improving the clinical outcome of the affected patients. In particular, the possible role of vitamin D status in the management of COVID-19 has been widely analysed, resulting in a great amount of data. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess whether hypovitaminosis D is a risk factor for developing SARS-CoV-2 infection and whether it affects the worsening of the clinical course of COVID-19., Methods: Data were extracted through extensive searches in the Pubmed, MEDLINE, Cochrane, Academic One Files, Google Scholar, and Scopus databases from December 2019 to January 2021, using the keywords: "Vitamin D", "25 hydroxy Vitamin D", "25 hydroxycholecalciferol", "cholecalciferol", "COVID 19″, "SARS-CoV-2″. We included observational cohort, cross-sectional, and case-control studies that evaluated differences in serum levels of 25‑hydroxy-cholecalciferol [25(OH)D] in patients who were positive or negative for SARS-CoV-2, in patients with mild or severe forms of COVID-19, and in patients who died or were discharged from the hospital. Finally, studies that evaluated the risk of developing severe illness or death in patients with vitamin D deficiency (VDD), defined as levels of 25(OH) D <20 ng/ml, were also included. We calculated the mean difference (MD) and the 95% confidence intervals (CI) for quantitative variables such as 25(OH)D levels in patients with or without SARS-CoV-2 infection, in those with mild vs. severe COVID-19, or those who have died vs. those who have been discharged. Instead, we calculated odds ratios and 95% CI for qualitative ones, such as the number of patients with severe illness/death in the presence of VDD vs. those with normal serum 25(OH)D levels. A p-value lower than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. The study was registered on PROSPERO (CRD42021241473)., Findings: Out of 662 records, 30 articles met inclusion criteria and, therefore, were included in the meta-analysis . We found that the serum levels of 25(OH)D were significantly lower in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection than in negative ones [MD -3.99 (-5.34, -2.64); p  <0.00001; I 2 = 95%]. Furthermore, its levels were significantly lower in patients with severe disease [MD -6.88 (-9.74, -4.03); p <0.00001; I 2 =98%] and in those who died of COVID-19 [MD -8.01 (-12.50, -3.51); p  = 0.0005; I 2 =86%]. Finally, patients with VDD had an increased risk of developing severe disease [OR 4.58 (2.24, 9.35); p <0.0001; I 2 =84%] but not a fatal outcome [OR 4.92 (0.83, 29.31); p  = 0.08; I 2 =94%]., Interpretation: This meta-analysis revealed a large heterogeneity of the studies included due to the different enrolment criteria of patient samples (age, body mass index, ethnicity, comorbidities), the country where they live, all factors influencing serum 25(OH)D levels, and the different criteria used to define the severity of COVID-19. Furthermore, the observational nature of these studies does not allow to establish a cause-effect relationship, even taking into account that 25(OH)D represents a marker of acute inflammation. Treatment with vitamin D might be considered for the primary prevention of SARS-CoV-2 infection and the management of patients with COVID-19. Vascular antiphospholipid syndrome (VAPS) and obstetric (OAPS) are different entities because some patients only develop thrombosis (without recurrent pregnancy losses) and vice versa. Only two articles have reported that low 25-hydroxy-cholecalciferol (vitamin D3, VD3) levels were not correlated with the presence of conventional antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL Abs: anticardiolipin (aCL), anti-beta2glycoprotein I (aβ2gpI), and lupus anticoagulant (LA)), but no article analyzed the association of VD3 and anti-annexin A5 (aanxA5) Abs. The aim of our study was to investigate the association between VD3, multiple positivity of conventional aPL and aanxA5 Abs levels only in female OAPS vs. VAPS. Our study included 62 consecutive female PAPS patients. Concentrations of Abs were measured by ELISA, while VD3 levels were determined by immunochemiluminescence. Only 10/62 (16.13%) had sufficient (≥ 30 ng/ml) VD3 levels, while 48/62 (77.42%) and 4/62 (6.45%) had insufficiency and VD3 deficiency, respectively. Statistically significant VD3 deficiency was noticed in VAPS (vs. OAPS, P = 0.013). A negative correlation between VD3 levels and the age of patients was noticed (r = - 0.493, P = 0.032) only in VAPS subgroup. Multiple positivity of aPL and aanxA5 Abs was not associated with VD3 deficiency. Newly emerging aPL Abs, such as aanxA5 Abs, or their combinations with classical aPL Abs are not associated with VD3 deficiency in neither OAPS nor VAPS patients. Due to its immunomodulatory roles in B-Ly homeostasis, supplementation with VD3 should be considered in APS, at least in subgroup with severe form of the disease, i.e., VAPS.
