Pathology laboratories are increasingly using digital workflows. This has the potential of increasing laboratory efficiency, but the digitization process also involves major challenges. Several reports have been published describing the individual experiences of specific laboratories with the digitization process. However, a comprehensive overview of the lessons learned is still lacking. We provide an overview of the lessons learned for different aspects of the digitization process, including digital case management, digital slide reading, and computer-aided slide reading. We also cover metrics used for monitoring performance and pitfalls and corresponding values observed in practice. The overview is intended to help pathologists, information technology decision makers, and administrators to benefit from the experiences of others and to implement the digitization process in an optimal way to make their own laboratory future-proof., (Copyright © 2023 The Authors. Background: The EFLM Task Force Preparation of Labs for Emergencies (TF-PLE) created a survey that has been distributed to its members for gathering information on the key hazards experienced by European medical laboratories during the COVID-19 pandemic., Methods: The survey was distributed to over 12,000 potential contacts (laboratory workers) via an EFLM newsletter, with responses collected between May 8 and June 8, 2023., Results: Two hundred replies were collected and examined from European laboratories. 69.7% and 78.1% of all responders said they were short on non-COVID and COVID reagents, respectively. Exactly half of respondents (50.0%) said that they could not complete all laboratory tests required for a specific period, but this figure climbed to 61.2% for COVID tests. Finally, 72.3% of respondents expressed exhaustion during the pandemic, and 61.2% reported increasing patient hostility., Conclusions: The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on laboratory medicine in Europe. Animal studies have pointed at the liver as a hotspot for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) accumulation and toxicity; however, these findings have not been replicated in human populations. We measured concentrations of seven PFAS in matched liver and plasma samples collected at the time of bariatric surgery from 64 adolescents in the Teen-Longitudinal Assessment of Bariatric Surgery (Teen-LABS) study. Liver:plasma concentration ratios were perfectly explained ( r 2 > 0.99) in a multilinear regression (MLR) model based on toxicokinetic (TK) descriptors consisting of binding to tissue constituents and membrane permeabilities. Of the seven matched plasma and liver PFAS concentrations compared in this study, the liver:plasma concentration ratio of perfluoroheptanoic acid (PFHpA) was considerably higher than the liver:plasma concentration ratio of other PFAS congeners. Comparing the MLR model with an equilibrium mass balance model (MBM) suggested that complex kinetic transport processes are driving the unexpectedly high liver:plasma concentration ratio of PFHpA. Intratissue MBM modeling pointed to membrane lipids as the tissue constituents that drive the liver accumulation of long-chain, hydrophobic PFAS, whereas albumin binding of hydrophobic PFAS dominated PFAS distribution in plasma. The liver:plasma concentration data set, empirical MLR model, and mechanistic MBM modeling allow the prediction of liver from plasma concentrations measured in human cohort studies. Our study demonstrates that combining biomonitoring data with mechanistic modeling can identify underlying mechanisms of internal distribution and specific target organ toxicity of PFAS in humans.

Houston TX experienced a widely known failure of its police forensic laboratory. This gave rise to the Houston Forensic Science Center (HFSC) as a separate entity to provide forensic services to the City of Houston. HFSC is a very large forensic laboratory and has made significant progress at remediating the past failures and improving public trust in forensic testing. HFSC has a large and robust blind testing program, which has provided many insights into the challenges forensic laboratories face. HFSC's journey from a notoriously failed lab to a model also gives perspective to the resource challenges faced by all labs in the country. Challenges for labs include the pervasive reality of poor-quality evidence. Also that forensic laboratories are necessarily part of a much wider system of interdependent functions in criminal justice making blind testing something in which all parts have a role. This interconnectedness also highlights the need for an array of oversight and regulatory frameworks to function properly. The major essential databases in forensics need to be a part of blind testing programs and work is needed to ensure that the results from these databases are indeed producing correct results and those results are being correctly used. Last, laboratory reports of "inconclusive" results are a significant challenge for laboratories and the system to better understand when these results are appropriate, necessary and most importantly correctly used by the rest of the system.

Eye tracking measurements taken while watching a wide field screen are challenging to perform. Commercially available remote eye trackers typically do not measure more than 35 degrees in eccentricity. Analysis software was developed using the Pupil Core Eye Tracking data to analyze viewing behavior under circumstances as natural as possible, on a 1.55-m-wide screen allowing free head movements. Additionally, dynamic area of interest (AOI) analyses were performed on data of participants viewing traffic scenes. A toolkit was created including software for simple allocation of dynamic AOIs (semi-automatically and manually), measurement of parameters such as dwell times and time to first entry, and overlaying gaze and AOIs on video. Participants (n =11) were asked to look at 13 dynamic AOIs in traffic scenes from appearance to disappearance in order to validate the setup and software. Different AOI margins were explored for the included objects. The median ratio between total appearance time and dwell time was about 90% for most objects when appropriate margins were chosen. This validated open-source toolkit is readily available for researchers who want to perform dynamic AOI analyses with the Pupil Core eye tracker, especially when measurements are desired on a wide screen, in various fields such as psychology, transportation, and low vision research., (© 2022. In this investigation, we tested hypotheses concerning how external validity, in relation to leadership and teamwork, was affected as participants moved from organizational to academic settings. Participants consisted of working business students ( N = 159) from two countries, Peru and the United States, who adopted leader/teammate roles across settings. Results indicated that (a) transactional leadership and teamwork behavior demonstrated in organizational contexts were predictive of similar behavior in academic contexts, (b) the cultural setting of the study moderates the carry over effect of teamwork and leadership behavior from organizations to laboratories, and (c) for several leadership and teamwork behaviors, role identity and self-awareness incrementally added to the prediction of similar behaviors in academic contexts. We discuss the implications of our findings for enhancing the external validity of laboratory studies in applied psychology and for instruction of teamwork and leadership in academe.

Intraprocedural stroke is a well-documented and feared potential risk of cardiovascular transcatheter procedures (TPs). Moreover, subclinical neurological events or covert central nervous system infarctions are concerns related to the development of dementia, future stroke, cognitive decline, and increased risk of mortality. Cerebral protection devices (CPDs) were developed to mitigate the risk of cardioembolic embolism during TPs. They are mechanical barriers designed to cover the ostium of the supra-aortic branches in the aortic arch, but newer devices are able to protect the descending aorta. CPDs have been mainly designed and tested to provide cerebral protection during transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), but their use in both Catheterization and Electrophysiology laboratories is rapidly increasing. CPDs have allowed us to perform procedures that were previously contraindicated due to high thromboembolic risk, such as in cases of intracardiac thrombosis identified at preprocedural assessment. However, several concerns related to their employment have to be defined. The selection of patients at high risk of thromboembolism is still a subjective choice of each center. The aim of this review is to update the evidence on the use of CPDs in either Cath labs or EP labs, providing an overview of their structural characteristics. Future perspectives focusing on their possible future employment are also discussed.

Combining eye tracking and virtual reality (VR) is a promising approach to tackle various applied research questions. As this approach is relatively new, routines are not established yet and the first steps can be full of potential pitfalls. The present paper gives a practice example to lower the boundaries for getting started. More specifically, I focus on an affordable add-on technology, the Pupil Labs eye tracking add-on for the HTC Vive. As add-on technology with all relevant source code available on GitHub, a high degree of freedom in preprocessing, visualizing, and analyzing eye tracking data in VR can be achieved. At the same time, some extra preparatory steps for the setup of hardware and software are necessary. Therefore, specifics of eye tracking in VR from unboxing, software integration, and procedures to analyzing the data and maintaining the hardware will be addressed. The Pupil Labs eye tracking add-on for the HTC Vive represents a highly transparent approach to existing alternatives. Characteristics of eye tracking in VR in contrast to other headmounded and remote eye trackers applied in the physical world will be discussed. In conclusion, the paper contributes to the idea of open science in two ways: First, by making the necessary routines transparent and therefore reproducible. Paraneoplastic syndromes are a group of clinical conditions with specific signs and symptoms that are associated with underlying malignancies. The pathophysiology of paraneoplastic syndromes is caused by either the ectopic production of various hormones or the immune production of autoantibodies. Lung cancers are also notorious for being accompanied by paraneoplastic syndromes. The endocrine paraneoplastic syndromes most commonly associated with lung cancer include hypercalcemia of malignancy and syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH). Oftentimes, one of the initial findings in the early stages of lung malignancy is not symptoms of a primary lung neoplasm, but the symptoms and/or lab findings of a paraneoplastic syndrome. This article has been written to present a case of how an asymptomatic patient with a lung mass and lab values suggesting SIADH could benefit from an alteration to the current status quo in the work-up of hypo-osmolar hyponatremia. The main reason for writing the article is to suggest incorporating one of the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) guidelines into the current work-up of hypo-osmolar hyponatremia. Currently, the workup for hypo-osmolar hyponatremia says, "consider chest imaging." However, incorporating one of the USPSTF screenings into a questionnaire for medical providers could be beneficial in identifying lung abnormalities sooner in patients with a smoking history and also be more appropriate in determining whether a patient should receive chest imaging., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist., (Copyright © 2023, Tyre et al.)

Objective: We developed a push notification allowing for an electronic acknowledgment of critical lab results to providers in the intensive care unit., Materials and Methods: This project was conducted over a 3-month period at a large academic safety net hospital. A push notification and acknowledgment system were created to comply with the existing critical results notification requirements. We monitored the number of acknowledged results, time to acknowledgment, and lab type., Results: Prior to the push notification, lab services paged the provider. This resulted in many critical lab results relayed to the clinician beyond the expected 10-minute window. With the push notification workflow, we found that, during the 3-month period, 82, or 5.8%, of the 1414 results were acknowledged. This represented 82 less pages/calls lab services had to make., Discussion: The push notification alert was easy to use and there was quicker results notification when acknowledged. There were limitations due to hand-offs for clinicians and some were not familiar with the mobile technology and the electronic acknowledgment., Conclusions: Although the acknowledgment rate was low, every electronic acknowledgment saved lab service technicians an average of 10 minutes compared to the existing workflow. As familiarity with the technology and workflow increases, this novel form of communication has the potential to have significant cost savings for lab services, in addition to efficiency gains for lab, clinicians, and more timely care. Introduction: In the process of growing societies, and especially in the digital era we live in, there is a need for a strong push for innovation that puts citizens at the center of the process from the beginning to build more resilient, cooperative and flexible communities. Different collaborative design approaches have emerged in recent decades, one of the most interesting being Living Labs, which involves user-centered design and co-creative innovation that bring together different actors and roles. However, although these new methodologies are harnessing creativity, some aspects of this new, more ecosystemic and complex vision are not clearly understood: possible barriers, how to facilitate local and operational solutions, overcoming institutional blockage, integrating new roles, etc., Methods: The incorporation of the Quintuple Helix as a driver to ensure greater coordinated participation of local actors has proven its usefulness and impact during the re-adaptation of LifeSpace (previously named Smart House Living Lab), managed by the Polytechnic University of Madrid (Spain), a transformation based on the experiences and lessons learned during the large-scale ACTIVAGE pilot funded by the European Commission, more specifically at the Madrid Deployment Site. Background: Traditional longitudinal aging research involves studying the same individuals over a long period, with measurement intervals typically several years apart. App-based studies have the potential to provide new insights into life-course aging by improving the accessibility, temporal specificity, and real-world integration of data collection. We developed a new research app for iOS named Labs Without Walls to facilitate the study of life-course aging. Combined with data collected using paired smartwatches, the app collects complex data including data from one-time surveys, daily diary surveys, repeated game-like cognitive and sensory tasks, and passive health and environmental data., Objective: The aim of this protocol is to describe the research design and methods of the Labs Without Walls study conducted between 2021 and 2023 in Australia., Methods: Overall, 240 Australian adults will be recruited, stratified by age group (18-25, 26-35, 36-45, 46-55, 56-65, 66-75, and 76-85 years) and sex at birth (male and female). Recruitment procedures include emails to university and community networks, as well as paid and unpaid social media advertisements. Participants will be invited to complete the study onboarding either in person or remotely. Participants who select face-to-face onboarding (n=approximately 40) will be invited to complete traditional in-person cognitive and sensory assessments to be cross-validated against their app-based counterparts. Participants will be sent an Apple Watch and headphones for use during the study period. Participants will provide informed consent within the app and then begin an 8-week study protocol, which includes scheduled surveys, cognitive and sensory tasks, and passive data collection using the app and a paired watch. At the conclusion of the study period, participants will be invited to rate the acceptability and usability of the study app and watch. We hypothesize that participants will be able to successfully provide e-consent, input survey data through the Labs Without Walls app, and have passive data collected over 8 weeks; participants will rate the app and watch as user-friendly and acceptable; the app will allow for the study of daily variability in self-perceptions of age and gender; and data will allow for the cross-validation of app- and laboratory-based cognitive and sensory tasks., Results: Recruitment began in May 2021, and data collection was completed in February 2023. The publication of preliminary results is anticipated in 2023., Conclusions: This study will provide evidence regarding the acceptability and usability of the research app and paired watch for studying life-course aging processes on multiple timescales. Active learning tools, such as gamification, have facilitated teamwork and improved decision-making skills in Anatomy and Physiology classes. However, most Anatomy and Physiology labs currently contain dissection activities where students are not likely to engage in inquiry, critical thinking, or problem-solving. Usually, the instructor gives a brief lecture on the topic, and students are left to dissect without understanding how the lecture relates to what is in front of them, which is frustrating. Coupled with the frustration, some students have adverse opinions on dissecting specimens, including hesitation to dissect the specimen and religious or ethical concerns with dissection. Utilizing similar game mechanics to Taboo (Hasbro) and Milton Bradley's Operation, Incision Precision is a card game that was made to engage students in the dissection lab by allowing them to connect lecture-based information to a physical structure within an organ system. Each card contains an anatomical or physiological description of the organs commonly dissected in the undergraduate Anatomy and Physiology laboratory. For effective gameplay and full participation, the class should be divided into groups containing 3 to 4 students. The group will draw two cards where members can either correctly name the organ or identify the named organ on the dissected specimen. Playing Incision Precision resulted in participation from all group members during the dissection activity, including those with negative feelings about touching the dissected specimen. Context: In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare-associated infections have taken center stage. Healthcare has adjusted workflows to accommodate for more robust disinfecting regiments to help protect the community. This has resulted in the need for medical institutions to reevaluate the current disinfection protocols down to the student level. The osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) laboratory provides an optimal avenue for assessing the effectiveness of medical students' ability to clean examination tables. With OMM laboratories having a high level of interaction, adequate disinfection is important for the health and safety of students and teaching faculties., Objectives: This study will evaluate the effectiveness of the current disinfection protocols in the medical school OMM labs., Methods: A cross-sectional, nonrandomized study was performed on 20 OMM examination tables utilized for osteopathic training. Tables were chosen based on their close proximity to the podium. Close proximity was utilized as a criteria to increase the probability of utilization by students. The sampled tables were observed to ensure their use by students during class. Initial samples were collected in the morning after disinfection by Environmental Services. Terminal samples were collected after Osteopathic medical students utilized and disinfected the OMM examination tables. Samples were collected from the face-cradle and midtorso regions and analyzed utilizing adenosine triphosphate (ATP) bioluminescence assays with an AccuPoint Advanced HC Reader. This reader provides a digital readout of the quantity of light measured in relative light units (RLUs), which is directly correlated to the amount of ATP present in the sample, providing an estimated pathogen count. For statistical analysis, a Wilcoxon signed-rank test was utilized to find statistical differences in RLUs in samples after initial and terminal disinfection., Results: The face cradle showed a 40 % increase in failure rate in samples after terminal disinfection when samples were compared after initial disinfection. A Wilcoxon signed-rank test revealed an estimated pathogen level for face cradle that was significantly higher after terminal disinfection (median, 4,295 RLUs; range, 2,269-12919 RLUs; n=20) compared to initial disinfection (median, 769 RLUs; range, 29-2,422 RLUs; n=20), z =-3.8, p=0.00008, with a large effect size, d =2.2. The midtorso region showed a 75 % increase in samples after terminal disinfection when samples were compared after initial disinfection. A Wilcoxon signed-rank test revealed that the estimated pathogen levels for midtorso were significantly higher after terminal disinfecting (median, 656 RLUs; range, 112-1,922 RLUs; n=20) compared to initial disinfecting (median, 128 RLUs; range, 1-335 RLUs; n=20), z =-3.9, p=0.00012, with a large effect size, d =1.8., Conclusions: This study suggests that medical students frequently failed to disinfect high-touch regions on examination tables, such as the midtorso and the face cradle. It is recommended that the current OMM lab disinfection protocol be modified to include the disinfection of high-touch regions in order to reduce the possibility of pathogen transmission. Background: A recent shift in the location where peripheral endovascular interventions (PVI) are performed has occurred, from traditional settings such as hospital outpatient departments (HOPD), to ambulatory surgical centers (ASC) and outpatient-based laboratories (OBL). Different settings may influence the safety and efficacy of the PVI, as well as how it is done. This study aims to compare the postprocedural outcomes and intraprocedural details between the three settings., Methods: The Vascular Quality Initiative database was queried for all elective infrainguinal PVIs for occlusive peripheral arterial disease between January 2016 and December 2021. The primary outcomes were rates of postprocedural hospital admissions, postprocedural medical complications, and access site complications. Secondary outcomes included technical success and intraprocedural details, such as types and number of devices used, amount of contrast, and fluoroscopy time. The χ 2 test, analysis of variance, and multivariate logistic regression were used to analyze the outcomes., Results: A total of 66,101 PVI cases (HOPD, 57,062 [83.33%]; ASC, 4591 [6.95%]; OBL, 4448 [6.73%]) were included in the study. There were 445 cases requiring hospital admission (HOPD, 398 [0.70%]; ASC, 26 [0.57%]; OBL, 21 [0.47%]; P = .126). There were no significant differences in cardiac, pulmonary, or renal complications. Access site complications occurred in less than 1.7% of all cases and were significantly higher in OBLs when compared with ASCs (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 3.70; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.70-8.03; P = .001) and significantly lower in ASCs in comparison to HOPDs (aOR, 0.27; 95% CI, 0.18-0.41; P < .001). Technical success occurred in at least 92% of all cases, regardless of setting. There was a 16-fold increase in the use of atherectomy devices in an OBL vs HOPD setting (aOR, 16.79; 95% CI, 11.77-23.95; P < .001) and a five-fold increase in the use of atherectomy devices in an ASC vs HOPD setting (aOR, 5.37; 95% CI, 2.47-11.65; P < .001). There was a five-fold decrease in the use of special balloons in an OBL vs HOPD setting (aOR, 0.20; 95% CI, 0.10-0.39; P < .001) and a four-fold decrease when comparing ASCs with HOPDs (aOR, 0.25; 95% CI, 0.12-0.51; P < .001)., Conclusions: Elective PVIs performed in any outpatient setting proved to be safe and technically successful. However, there are significant differences in the way PVIs are performed in each setting, such as the greater use of atherectomy devices in OBLs and greater use of special balloons in HOPDs. Digital technologies are increasingly adopted and developed in living labs, to support and enable co-production processes around wellbeing related public services. This research report presents the case of one of the local laboratories established by the European project NLAB4CIT, in the city of Kaisariani, Greece. In order to enhance community engagement, participatory design methods are applied under an "infrastructuring" notion; the living lab model is reapproached as community infrastructure; and digital tools are understood as civic technologies. The article reports on the initial co-design phases, in order to provide other living labs on digital co-production with an overview on the socio-technical challenges encountered. These challenges concern how community actors can engage in the process of co-production of public services, and how digital technologies can be introduced to this purpose. Strength factors emerge such as the existence of an already active community, the creation of an enduring space of collaboration between researchers and citizens, and a civic approach to technology that makes them accessible and tailored. Introduction: We aim to evaluate the utility of postoperative labs in predicting the development of an intra-abdominal abscess (IAA) in pediatric patients with perforated appendicitis. We hypothesize that postoperative labs are not predictive of IAA development., Methods: This was a single-institution retrospective cohort study that included pediatric patients (n = 61) who underwent surgery for perforated appendicitis from January 1, 2019 to December 1, 2020. Patients were stratified into those who developed a postoperative IAA (n = 22) and those who did not (n = 39). Postoperative labs (white blood cell [WBC] count, absolute neutrophil count, platelet count, C-reactive protein) were examined. Mann-Whitney U tests and chi-square tests were used to assess for differences between groups., Results: There was extensive heterogeneity and overlap in postoperative lab values between patients who developed an IAA and those who did not. Almost all patients who developed an IAA had clinical signs that were indicative of abscess formation regardless of their postoperative WBC count or change in WBC count. While patients who developed an IAA had a higher postoperative median WBC count (10.8 versus 8.4, P = 0.003) and a smaller WBC count decrease (-4.9 versus -7.4, P = 0.01), no cutoff value for any of the examined lab values specifically predicted abscess formation. Postoperative median absolute neutrophil count (7.4 versus 4.0, P = 0.15), platelet count (360 versus 353, P = 0.98), and C-reactive protein (8.20 versus 5.32, P = 0.06) did not differ significantly., Conclusions: We conclude that postoperative labs have limited clinical utility in evaluating IAA development in children with perforated appendicitis., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Inc. Purpose: This study was performed to assess the effect of baseline Preoperative Laboratory Values (PLV) on post-operative Brain Tumor Resection (BTR) outcomes in a large national registry., Methods: We extracted data from the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) database for BTR patients 2015-2019 (n = 3 0,951). Uni- and multivariate analyses were performed for PLV and key surgical outcomes., Results: The most significant PLV predictors of 30-day mortality after BTR included hypernatremia (odds ratio, OR 4.184, 95% CI, 2.384-7.343, p < 0.001), high serum creatinine (OR 2.244, 95% CI 1.502-3.352, p < 0.001), thrombocytopenia (OR 1.997, 95% CI 1.438, 2.772, p < 0.001), and leukocytosis (OR 1.635, 95% CI 1.264, 2.116, p < 0.001). The most significant predictors of Clavien IV complications were increased INR (OR 2.653, 95% CI 1.444, 4.875, p < 0.01), thrombocytopenia (OR 1.514, 95% CI 1.280, 1.792, p < 0.001), hypoalbuminemia (OR 1.480, 95% CI 1.274, 1.719, p < 0.001), and leukocytosis (OR 1.467, 95% CI 1.306, 1.647, p < 0.001). The most robust predictors of eLOS were increased INR (OR 1.941, 95% CI 1.231, 3.060, p < 0.01) and hypoalbuminemia (OR 1.993, 95% CI 1.823, 2.179, p < 0.001), and those for non-routine discharge included increased INR (OR 1.897, 95% CI 1.196, 3.008, p < 0.01) and hypernatremia (OR 1.565, 95% CI 1.217, 2.012, p < 0.001)., Conclusions: Several PLV independently predicted worse outcomes in BTR patients. Globally, educational institutes are trying to adapt modernized and effective approaches and tools to their education systems to improve the quality of their performance and achievements. However, identifying, designing, and/or developing promising mechanisms and tools that can impact class activities and the development of students' outputs are critical success factors. Given that, the contribution of this work is to propose a methodology that can guide and usher educational institutes step by step through the implementation of a personalized package of training Toolkits in Smart Labs. In this study, the package of Toolkits refers to a set of needed tools, resources, and materials that, with integration into a Smart Lab can, on the one hand, empower teachers and instructors in designing and developing personalized training disciplines and module courses and, on the other hand, may support students (in different ways) in developing their skills. To demonstrate the applicability and usefulness of the proposed methodology, a model was first developed, representing the potential Toolkits for training and skill development. The model was then tested by instantiating a particular box that integrates some hardware to be able to connect sensors to actuators, with an eye toward implementing this system mainly in the health domain. In a real scenario, the box was used in an engineering program and its associated Smart Lab to develop students' skills and capabilities in the areas of the Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). The main outcome of this work is a methodology supported by a model able to represent Smart Lab assets in order to facilitate training programs through training Toolkits.

Dementia is a growing societal challenge putting pressure on care systems across Europe. Providing supporting technology for people living with dementia, referring to both people with dementia and their caregivers, is an important strategy to alleviate pressure. In this paper, we present lessons learned from the Interreg NWE Project Certification-D, in which we evaluated technological products with people living with dementia, using a Living Lab approach. Living Labs were set up in five different countries to conduct field evaluations at the homes of people living with dementia. Via an open call products from small to medium enterprises across northwestern Europe were selected to be evaluated in the Living Labs. In this paper, we describe the setup of and reflection on Living Labs as multi-stakeholder collaboration networks to evaluate technological products in the context of dementia. We reflect on the experiences and insights from the Living Lab researchers to execute and operate the Living Labs in such a sensitive setting. Our findings show that Living Labs can be used to conduct field evaluations of products, that flexibility is required to adopt a Living Lab in various care settings with different stakeholder compositions and expertise, and that Living Lab researchers serve as both a linking pin and buffer between people living with dementia and companies and thereby support the adoption of technological products. We close the paper with a proposal of best practices to encourage inclusivity in, and scalability of, Living Labs in the context of dementia.

Neurodegenerative disease (ND) research is producing new pharmaceutical compounds for chronic diseases utilizing bioinformatics. Algorithmic data mining of high-throughput omics systems is conjoined with the study of the in vitro dynamics of protein folding through visualization techniques, i.e., Bio-AFM. Novel models of disease pathway diagrams are being produced and the processes are in place to enhance the validation of these models. From bench work to BLAST to bedside, globally standardized research is led by collaborative clusters, working on cloud-based platforms, with crowd sourced human cohort collections, pairing pure, curiosity-based neurological research with deep learning data analysis techniques. ND research is leading the way towards clinical applications for preventing, curing, or ameliorating major diseases of neurological dysfunction, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD).Most of this is too complex for the average citizen to comprehend. Can bioart and data-art contribute to the public understanding of genome sequencing and bioinformatics databases in the context of ND research? Informal studies towards demystifying bioinformatics through creative practices have been tested, revealing significant qualitative benefits for public well-being while introducing bioinformatics databases, for instance, previous projects: the VASTAL Bioinformatics and Literary Studies: (De)Mystified Genetic Code Lab, held at the Waag in Amsterdam, NL, 2009 and more recently the Creative Germline Constructs Bank (CGCB) of the transgenic human Genome Alternatives Project (thGAP), held at Hackteria ZET, Zurich, Switzerland, 2021.For the Hub of Art Laboratories (HAL), of the Department of Audio & Visual Arts (AVArts), Ionian University in Corfu, Greece, the animation node is challenged to create audiovisual, immersive, and interactive environments that highlight natural processes and phenomena of the microcosm and macrocosm through nature/data interface experimentation. It is the intention of the node's researchers to expand these notions to be inclusive of the processes of the biotechnological and bioinformatics interrogation of human disease as a part of local clades and global nature. In our productions, we would like to emphasize: cryogenic storage, genome analysis, bioinformatic database management, biomarkers for polygenic abnormalities, genotyping/phenotyping, gene expression patterns over time, AI reading of cloud-based research, experiencial DNA/RNA synthesis, the development of novel DNA, RNA and protein-based therapeutic agents for biomedical applications and CRISPR construct design for model organisms. It is the HAL animation node's goal to design and explore bioart-based, hands-on public workshops that mix bioinformatics and data-art with in-depth knowledge of the scientific community around ND research bodies.To develop these labs, dedicated artistic research is required to be undertaken through laboratory immersion, interactions with scientists, and hands-on experience in the lab. Artists must experience scientific processes through residencies in labs to learn both how to convey the techniques and the social implications of novel methodologies. Artists developing bioart workshops that can introduce non-specialists to a dizzying array of research methodologies need to know what they are talking about. It takes experience and dedication to convey simplified versions of real-time biosensor data, automated histology, clinical databases of medical case studies (anonymized clients), real-time PCR, novel diagnostic biomarker development, etc. As qualitative researchers, artists in labs ensure creative yet informed art and science (SciArt) outcomes able to stimulate public debate through unorthodox education and accurate playfulness. Obviously, the immersive experience of lab research provides an artist's projects with both nuance and knowledge. The aim of this a pioneering research is to investigate linear alkylbenzenes (LABs) as biomarkers of sewage pollution in sediments collected from four rivers and estuaries of the south and east of Peninsular Malaysia. The sediment samples went through soxhlet extraction, two-step column chromatography purification, fractionation and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. Principal component analysis (PCA) with multivariate linear regression (MLR) was used as well for source apportionment of LABs. The results of this study showed that total LAB concentration was 36-1196 ng g -1 dw. The internal to external isomer ratios (I/E ratio) of LABs were from 0.56 to 3.12 indicated release of raw sewage and primary and secondary effluents into the environment of south and east of Peninsular Malaysia. Synthesizing the advancements in technology with classroom practices depends considerably on teachers acceptance of such internet and communication technology (ICT) tools. Adequate teacher training and upgrading of their IT skills are not prioritized in developing economies leading to poor adoption of emerging technology assisted pedagogic interventions. This paper investigated the underlying characteristics of teachers acceptance of mobile friendly virtual laboratories (M-VLs) as part of a longitudinal study conducted over 5 years covering both pre-pandemic and pandemic periods. Systematic analysis of quantitative data from 650 chemistry teachers was carried out. Viewing through the theoretical lens of Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT2) theory, the effects of performance expectancy (PE), effort expectancy (EE), social influence (SI), facilitating conditions (FC), hedonic motivation (HM) and habit (HA) on the behavioral intention (BI) and use behavior (UB) were scrutinized. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) analysis revealed that PE, SI, and HA are the considerable predictors of the BI to use M-VLs and HA is the predictor of UB. The present study found HM influencing teacher's BI and UB before COVID-19. However during COVID-19 the FC influenced usage. Coronary heart disease is a non-communicable disease whose treatment is closely related to infrastructure, such as diagnostic imaging equipment visualizing arteries and chambers of the heart (cath lab) and infrastructure that supports access to healthcare. This research is intended as a preliminary geospatial study to carry out initial measurements of health facility coverage at the regional level, survey available supporting data and provide input on problems in future research. Data on cath lab presence was gathered through direct survey, while population data was taken from an open-source geospatial system. The cath lab service coverage was obtained by analysis based on a Geographical Information System (GIS) specific tool to evaluate travel time from the sub-district centre to the nearest cath lab facility. The number of cath labs in East Java has increased from 16 to 33 in the last six years and the 1-hour access time increased from 24.2% to 53.8%. However, accessibility remains a problem as16.5% of the total population of East Java cannot access a cath lab even within 2 hours. Thus, additional cath lab facilities are required to provide ideal healthcare coverage. Geospatial analysis is the tool to determine the optimal cath lab distribution.

The Algerian Ministry of Higher Education announced the closure of universities and switched to distance teaching due to the strong and rapid spread of COVID-19. The pandemic that forced this change created many obstacles to pedagogy. In fact, many related issues had to be resolved and other alternative teaching strategies examined. This article defines a strategy that ensures the pedagogical continuity of laboratory practical work of computer graphics course in a COVID- 19 context. It also includes data analysis of student satisfaction questionnaire on the lab work strategy quality. As a result of this research, the success rates in the graphics design course reached 91,79% and students' grades ranged from 4.33/20 to 18.17/20. This result is consistent with the combined-type graphical representation of COLLES. Guidelines and best practices are provided for performing online learning labs, including the university's online learning platform as well as different teaching scenarios, tutoring and peer assessment techniques. Background: Unnecessary laboratory testing of hospitalized patients is prevalent., Objective: We conducted a study focused on "mindful ordering" to decrease unnecessary laboratory ordering within an Internal Medicine residency program., Designs, Settings and Participants: We collected survey data on resident/faculty perceptions of laboratory ordering as well as order information from the electronic medical record (EMR)., Intervention: Interventions focused on resident-identified barriers such as knowledge, EMR, habit and faculty expectations. Interventions were cumulative and included resident/faculty education and EMR optimization., Main Outcomes and Measures: We assessed basic and complete metabolic panels (BMP, CMP) and complete blood counts with and without differential (CBC w/diff, w/o diff). Primary outcomes included: total labs ordered per week, lab and frequency, and resident perception of ordering practices. Secondary outcomes included: length-of stay (LOS) and venipuncture utilization., Results: Survey data demonstrated increased resident perception of both mindful ordering and team discussion. Total labs ordered per week decreased 20% in the first year (1944 to 1500 labs/week). Residents' use of the "one-time draw" option increased; use of "daily" frequency decreased. Trends showed an increase in BMP relative to CMP, and an increase in CBC w/o diff relative to CBC w/diff. These changes were sustained through 127 weeks. There was an approximately 10% decrease in monthly average of patients undergoing venipuncture each day (86.7% to 74.2%). The shifts in laboratory ordering in conjunction with increased discussion about labs suggest a sustained change in resident lab ordering behavior. Background: General surgery has the fastest growing robotic operative volume in the United States, but most robotic curricula are focused on basic psychomotor skills. There are limited curricula focused on advanced robotic technical and related non-technical skills. We describe a novel pilot curriculum for robotic hiatal hernia repair developed for senior surgical residents to provide training and standardized assessment of higher-order robotic technical and leadership skills., Methods: Twelve senior residents, post-graduate year (PGY) 4 & 5, participated in a robotic hiatal hernia repair skills curriculum. Residents completed a pre- and post-survey on confidence and ability ratings on a 5-point Likert-type Scale, and a knowledge assessment. An informal faculty-led didactic was provided prior to the simulation. Residents were scored on two validated assessment tools: Ottawa Surgical Competency Operating Room Evaluation (O-SCORE) and Global Ratings Scale of Operative Performance (GRS) by faculty proctors., Results: Confidence in ability to independently complete a robotic hiatal hernia case increased from mean of 2.6 ± 0.8 to 3.3 ± 0.6 (p = 0.0007). Following the simulation, residents reported increased overall confidence and ability to operate independently with mean scores of 3.3 ± 0.8 and 3.8 ± 0.9, respectively. Mean O-SCORE and GRS scores were 3.6 (range 2 - 4) and 25.4 (range 12 - 31), respectively. Number of prior live robotic cases was strongly positively correlated to O-SCORE (R = 0.84, p = 0.0006) and GRS (R = 0.88, p = 0.0002)., Conclusion: Our pilot study suggests live-operative robotic training is not sufficient alone for advanced robotic skill training. Simulations such as this can be used to (1) practice advanced robotic technical and relevant non-technical skills such as communication and operating room leadership in a low stake setting and (2) assess residents in a standardized environment to eventually evaluate robotic competency., (© 2022. Introduction: This study was carried out to evaluate the awareness of radiation protection, radiation types, medical imaging equipment and radiation effects among nurses for the first time in Sri Lanka. Since nurses are involved as direct caregivers in diagnostic and therapeutic radiography and radiation treatment procedures, they need to have a good understanding of the areas mentioned above., Methods: A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data from 391 nurses working in hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare settings. Forwarded questions gathered the participants' demographic details and assessed their awareness of radiation protection, medical imaging equipment, radiation type and radiation effects. The average score per awareness area for each demographic characteristic was calculated based on the responses. Additionally, the percentage of participants who scored above 50 and 75 was calculated for each awareness area., Results: The majority were female participants (81.1%) and possessed a diploma in nursing (66.0%) with 10.8 years of average work experience. 92.3%, 74.7%, 69.8% and 22.3% of the participants scored more than 50 marks for the questions related to radiation protection, medical imaging equipment, radiation type and radiation effects, respectively. The level of nursing education and prior training in radiation protection significantly influenced all awareness areas, whereas participants with a graduate qualification in nursing and with prior radiation protection training scored the highest average marks., Conclusion: Based on the scores obtained, the Sri Lankan nurses have satisfactory awareness of the essential concepts related to radiation types, medical imaging equipment and radiation protection. However, there is a significant lacking of awareness of radiation effects. This can be attributed to the fact that most participants did not have any formal training in radiation protection. The results implicate that proper training in radiation protection can significantly influence awareness of radiation protection and related concepts. Objective: The global COVID-19 pandemic required the teaching of basic science instructional laboratories be done in a remote, online format termed emergency remote teaching (ERT). The aims of this study were to: (1) share strategies for ERT of basic science instructional laboratories and (2) assess student perceptions of the experience of virtual demonstrations that were recorded from the first-person perspective of the professor., Methods: Laboratories for courses in gross anatomy, neuroanatomy, and clinical microbiology were adapted to ERT by creating videos that allowed the students to view the laboratory activities through the eyes and hands of the faculty. A unique 5-question survey instrument was created to collect students' perceptions of gross anatomy, neuroanatomy, and clinical microbiology virtual lab experiences. Percentage of responses were calculated for 4 close-ended questions. Qualitative content analysis was conducted on the single open-ended question. Two additional close-ended questions were used for assessing perception of gross anatomy labs only., Results: Videos of gross anatomy, neuroanatomy, and clinical microbiology laboratory activities mimicked the student experience through the camera lens as labs were performed by faculty members engaged in either dissection, viewing structures or doing experiments, respectively. In all 3 basic science courses, over 70% of students strongly agreed or agreed that the videos created a sense of being in the laboratory., Conclusion: Use of video technology allowed faculty to mimic the student experience of being in basic science laboratories, and, importantly, allowed the student to virtually participate in the learning experience.

Not only in Morocco, throughout the walks of the world covid 19 pandemics has seriously questioned policymakers from different sectors. Think-tank in the educational sector notably higher education addressed by such a wide range of challenges brought about by covid 19. The characteristic concern that educationalists in Moroccan universities have to reconsider in this pandemic period should not be beyond rethinking new pedagogical alternatives including approaches, methods, techniques and didactic materials which can successfully assist practioners of the teaching and learning process to keep up with the current alterations. Practical work (PW) is an indispensable type of teaching in scientific and technical training and meets a real complementary need through real, remote or virtual laboratories. Students can consolidate what they have learnt and develop analytical skills by comparing experimental results with those obtained during the manipulation. In this context, the Laboratory of Engineering Sciences and Energy Management (LASIME) at the Superior School of Technology of Agadir has developed a low-cost platform called LABERSIME installed in the cloud (LMS, IDE) and equipped with an embedded system to drive real laboratory equipment and perform experiments qualitatively more efficient than those in face-to-face mode. An increasing number of laboratories need to collect data from multiple flow cytometers, especially for research projects performed across multiple centers. The challenges of using two flow cytometers in different labs include the lack of standardized materials, software compatibility issues, inconsistencies in instrument setup, and the use of different configurations for different flow cytometers. To establish a standardized flow cytometry experiment to achieve the consistency and comparability of experimental results across multiple centers, a rapid and feasible standardization method was established to transfer parameters across different flow cytometers. The methods developed in this study allowed the transfer of experimental settings and analysis templates between two flow cytometers in different laboratories for the detection of lymphocytes in Japanese encephalitis (JE)-vaccinated children. A consistent fluorescence intensity was obtained between the two cytometers using fluorescence standard beads to establish the cytometer settings. Comparable results were obtained in two laboratories with different types of instruments. Using this method, we can standardize analysis for evaluating the immune function of JE-vaccinated children in different laboratories with different instruments, diminish the differences in data and results among flow cytometers in multiple centers, and provide a feasible approach for the mutual accreditation of laboratory results. The standardization method of flow cytometer experiments will ensure the effective performance of research projects across multiple centers.

Self-driving labs (SDLs) combine fully automated experiments with artificial intelligence (AI) that decides the next set of experiments. Taken to their ultimate expression, SDLs could usher a new paradigm of scientific research, where the world is probed, interpreted, and explained by machines for human benefit. While there are functioning SDLs in the fields of chemistry and materials science, we contend that synthetic biology provides a unique opportunity since the genome provides a single target for affecting the incredibly wide repertoire of biological cell behavior. However, the level of investment required for the creation of biological SDLs is only warranted if directed toward solving difficult and enabling biological questions. Purpose The role of cadaver labs in preparing new generations of effective neurosurgeons is of paramount importance. The Authors describe a personal cadaver lab experience aimed at improving the knowledge of a difficult region of the central skull base. The anterior and middle incisural spaces are regions of remarkable anatomical, and surgical interest due to complex relationships between bony, dural, arachnoidal, and neurovascular structures. The primary purpose of this study is (1) to describe the anatomy of this region with particular emphasis on the relationships between the anterior margin of the free edge of the tentorium and the sphenoid and petrous bone; (2) to identify surgical implications in many different types of neurosurgical procedures dealing with this challenging complex anatomic area.Methods Eight fresh, non-formalin-fixed non-silicon-injected adult cadaver heads and five injected formalin-fixed adult cadaver heads were analyzed in this study.Results The anatomical study was focused on the description of the relationships between bony, dural, arachnoid, and neurovascular structures. Surgical implications are described accordingly.Conclusions Detailed anatomical knowledge of this region finds concrete applications in neurosurgical practice since the anterior and middle incisural spaces are often surgically exposed in neoplastic and vascular diseases., (© 2023. This research contributes to the knowledge of how Information Systems (IS) researchers can iteratively intervene with practitioners to co-create instructional programs with a framework designed for fast-paced, rapidly changing IS fields such as cybersecurity. We demonstrate how complex fields, such as cybersecurity, have the need for a skilled workforce that continues to rapidly outpace supply from universities. IS researchers partnering with practitioners can use this research as an exemplar of a method to design, build, and evaluate these innovative co-curricular IS programs.
