Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the significance of background noise in machine learning models assessing the GRBAS scale for voice disorders., Methods: A dataset of 1406 voice samples was collected from retrospective data, and a 5-layer 1D convolutional neural network (CNN) model was constructed using TensorFlow. The dataset was divided into training, validation, and test data. Gaussian noise was added to test samples at various intensities to assess the model's noise resilience. The model's performance was evaluated using accuracy, F1 score, and quadratic weighted Cohen's kappa score., Results: The model's performance on the GRBAS scale generally declined with increasing noise intensities. For the G scale, accuracy dropped from 70.9% (original) to 8.5% (at the highest noise), F1 score from 69.2% to 1.3%, and Cohen's kappa from 0.679 to 0.0. Similar declines were observed for the remaining RBAS components., Conclusion: The model's performance was affected by background noise, with substantial decreases in evaluation metrics as noise levels intensified. Objectives: Understanding speech in noise (SIN) is the dominant complaint of individuals with hearing loss. For decades, the default test of speech perception in routine audiologic assessment has been monosyllabic word recognition in quiet (WRQ), which does not directly address patient concerns, leading some to advocate that measures of SIN should be integrated into routine practice. However, very little is known with regard to how SIN abilities are affected by different types of hearing loss. Here, we examine performance on clinical measures of WRQ and SIN in a large patient base consisting of a variety of hearing loss types, including conductive (CHL), mixed (MHL), and sensorineural (SNHL) losses., Design: In a retrospective study, we examined data from 5593 patients (51% female) who underwent audiometric assessment at the Stanford Ear Institute. All individuals completed pure-tone audiometry, and speech perception testing of monaural WRQ, and monaural QuickSIN. Patient ages ranged from 18 to 104 years (average = 57). The average age in years for the different classifications of hearing loss was 51.1 (NH), 48.5 (CHL), 64.2 (MHL), and 68.5 (SNHL), respectively. Generalized linear mixed-effect models and quartile regression were used to determine the relationship between hearing loss type and severity for the different speech-recognition outcome measures., Results: Patients with CHL had similar performance to patients with normal hearing on both WRQ and QuickSIN, regardless of the hearing loss severity. In patients with MHL or SNHL, WRQ scores remained largely excellent with increasing hearing loss until the loss was moderately severe or worse. In contrast, QuickSIN signal to noise ratio (SNR) losses showed an orderly systematic decrease as the degree of hearing loss became more severe. This effect scaled with the data, with threshold-QuickSIN relationships absent for CHL, and becoming increasingly stronger for MHL and strongest in patients with SNHL. However, the variability in these data suggests that only 57% of the variance in WRQ scores, and 50% of the variance in QuickSIN SNR losses, could be accounted for by the audiometric thresholds. Patients who would not be differentiated by WRQ scores are shown to be potentially differentiable by SIN scores., Conclusions: In this data set, conductive hearing loss had little effect on WRQ scores or QuickSIN SNR losses. However, for patients with MHL or SNHL, speech perception abilities decreased as the severity of the hearing loss increased. In these data, QuickSIN SNR losses showed deficits in performance with degrees of hearing loss that yielded largely excellent WRQ scores. However, the considerable variability in the data suggests that even after classifying patients according to their type of hearing loss, hearing thresholds only account for a portion of the variance in speech perception abilities, particularly in noise. Reorganization of neonatal intensive care by introducing clinical microsystems may help to allocate nursing time more appropriately to the needs of patients. However, there is concern that cohorting infants according to acuity may enhance noise levels. This single-center study investigated the impact of reorganization of neonatal intensive care unit by implementing clinical microsystems in a Level III NICU on environmental noise. This prospective study measured 24-h noise levels over a period of 6 months during pre- and post-implementation of microsystems cohorting infants of similar acuity. Comparative analyses of the mixed acuity (i.e., before) and the cohorting (i.e., after) model were performed by creating daily profiles from continuous noise level measurements and calculating the length of exposure to predefined noise levels. Compared to baseline daytime measurements, noise levels were 3-6 dBA higher during physician handover. Noise levels were 2-3 dBA lower on weekends and 3-4 dBA lower at night, independent of the organizational model. The introduction of clinical microsystems slightly increased average noise levels for high-acuity pods (A and B) but produced a much more substantial decrease for low-acuity pods (E), leading to an overall reduction in unit-wide noise levels.    Conclusion: Our data show that noise levels are more driven by human behavior than by technical devices. Implementation of microsystems may help to reduce noise exposure in the lower acuity pods in a NICU. What is Known: • Excessive noise levels can lead to adverse effects on the health and development of premature infants and other critically ill newborns. • The reorganization of the neonatal intensive care unit following the clinical microsystems principles might improve quality of care but also affect noise exposure of staff and patients. The soundscape study of an eastern Indian coastal city (Puri) has been investigated. Acoustic data were collected at 36 sampling locations during two time intervals in and around Puri. A number of noise indices, namely, Lmin, Lmax, and Leq, were calculated to demonstrate the noise level of this city. Noise maps are generated using ARC-GIS to investigate the impact of road traffic noise on the soundscape of the city. The response of the public was appraised by a questionnaire. Due to variable traffic features, the equivalent noise level (Leq) as well as peak (L 10 ) and background noise (L 90 ) levels varied with location and time of the day. It was found that socio-demographic characteristics have no bearing on the amount of annoyance. Noise exposure has reached an alarming degree over the years because of rapid growth in the industry, transportation, and urbanization. Therefore, it is a dire need to provide awareness of the sources and mitigation strategies of noise, and to highlight the health, and socio-economic impacts of noise. A few research studies have documented this emerging issue; however, there is no comprehensive document describing all types of noise, their impacts on living organisms, and control strategies. This review article summarizes the sources of noise; their effects on industrial workers, citizens, and animals; and the value of property in noisy areas. The plethora of literature is showing an increased level of noise in various cities of the world, which have various health consequences such as high blood pressure, insomnia, nausea, heart attack, exhaustion, dizziness, headache, and triggered hearing loss. Apart from humans, noise also affects animal habitat, preying, and reproduction ability; increases heart rate and hearing loss to even death and loss in property value; and impairs the hospital environment. Finally, we have discussed the possible strategies to mitigate the noise problem, policy statements, and regulations to be followed, with future research directions based on the identified research gaps., (© 2022. Elevated noise level is an emerging global problem. Therefore, the present work is conducted that can improve, increase, and integrate the already known issue in literature with new information coming from an emerging country such as Pakistan. The objectives of this study were (i) to assess the urban noise levels and traffic density of Chiniot and Jhang and (ii) to determine nonauditory health effects of noise levels on the residents of both cities. Noise levels were examined from 181 locations (103 from Jhang and 78 from Chiniot) and categorized into hospitals, educational, religious and recreational, residential, industrial areas, and traffic intersections. A-weighted noise level measurements were taken using an integrated sound level meter which recorded short-term road traffic noise continuously for 15 min at each location (LA eq15 ). The urban noise data showed 82% of the sites in Jhang (LA max = 103 dB) and 95% in Chiniot (LA max = 120 dB) exceeded the noise limits set by the National Environment Quality Standard of Pakistan (NEQS-Pak) and World Health Organization (WHO). Moreover, higher intensity of noise levels (LA eq15 ≥ 100 dB) was recorded in Chiniot (17 sites) than in Jhang (1 site). Regression analysis showed a relatively strong relationship of traffic density with noise at Chiniot (R 2 = 0.48) compared to Jhang (R 2 = 0.31). However, spatial variability of noise with traffic density was observed in both cities. Survey study revealed that all the respondents in Jhang and Chiniot suffered from many noise-related health problems such as annoyance (53 and 51%), depression (45 and 47%), dizziness (61 and 65%), headache (67 and 64%), hypertension (71 and 56%), hearing loss (53 and 56%), physiological stress (65 and 65%), sleeplessness (81 and 84%), and tinnitus (70 and 62%) due to noise, respectively. We conclude that noise levels are higher in Chiniot primarily due to high road traffic and secondarily due to high population density. Environmental noise can lead to adverse health outcomes. Understanding the spatial variability of environmental noise is crucial for mitigating potential health risks and developing influential urban strategies for reducing noise levels. This study aimed to measure noise levels and develop a land use regression (LUR) model to determine the spatial variability of environmental noise in Shiraz, Iran. A grid-based technique was used to establish 191 noise measurement sites (summer) across the city to generate the LUR model based on two noise metrics: L den and L night . Leave-one-out cross-validation (LOOCV) and 38 additional measurement sites (winter) were used for the LUR model assessment. The mean values of L den and L night during summer were 68.20 (±8.05) and 58.95 (±9.55), respectively, while during winter, the corresponding values were 69.46 (±5.46) and 58.81 (±6.79). The LUR models explained 67% and 65% of the spatial variability in L den and L night , respectively. LOOCV analysis demonstrated R 2 values of 0.64 and 0.61. Moreover, findings indicated mean absolute error (MAE) values of 3.96 dB(A) for L den and 4.74 dB(A) for L night . Validation based on an additional set of 38 measurement sites revealed R 2 values of 0.62 for both L den and L night , with MAE of 2.78 and 3.31, respectively. In addition, the adjusted R 2 values were 0.54 and 0.53. The results indicated no significant temporal variations between summer and winter. The results revealed that road-related variables significantly influenced noise levels. Moreover, the results indicated that L den and L night levels were higher than the World Health Organization recommendations for exposure to road traffic noise. Anthropogenic noise has been identified as one of the most harmful forms of global pollutants impacting both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. As global populations continue to increase, coastlines are seeing substantial increases in the level of urbanisation. Although measures are in place to minimise stress on fauna, they rarely consider the impact of anthropogenic noise. In Australia, New South Wales (NSW) estuaries have seen extensive increases in urbanisation in recent years. Yet, there remains minimal baseline data on their soundscapes to determine if noise pollution is a threat. This research provides a first assessment of baseline sounds across a temporal and seasonal scale. Recreational boating was the primary soundscape contributor in estuaries, and estuaries with higher urbanisation levels contained higher sound levels. Anthropogenic low-frequency noise (ALFN) is a rising pollutant in the world oceans. Despite the ubiquity of ALFN, its effect on marine invertebrates is still poorly understood. Here, we tested how continuous low-frequency noise (CLFN), a substantial component of ALFN, affects the byssal thread production of Mytilus, a cosmopolitan genus of mussels with high ecological and economic importance. The effects of acute CLFN exposure and predator cues on byssogenesis by Mytilus spp. were explored in both the presence and absence of predator cues. While predator effluents increased thread production, CLFN had seemingly no effect on thread counts. Further, trends suggested a synergistic effect of CLFN and predator cues. The behavioral indifference of Mytilus spp. toward CLFN could contribute to the observed prevalence of these animals in inherently disturbed habitats. Background: Chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs) are among the top three causes of human mortality. The relationship between modifiable environmental risk factor of noise and risk of mortality in CRDs is unclear. We investigated the longitudinal association between environmental noise exposure and cause-specific mortality in individuals with CRDs, considering the modifying effect of air pollution., Methods: Residential noise exposure was modelled using Common Noise Assessment Methods in Europe. Information on death causes were acquired from death registry data. Cox proportional-hazards models were used to estimate effect sizes., Results: Among 41,222 participants selected from UK Biobank with CRDs in baseline, a total of 3618 death cases occurred during an average follow-up of 12 years with mortality density of 7.16 per 1000 person years. Exposure with highest noise level (> percentile 90) were associated with 22 % (Hazard ratio [HR] = 1.22, 95 % confidence interval [CI]: 1.05, 1.42), 71 % (HR = 1.71, 95 % CI: 1.14, 2.56), and 84 % (HR = 1.84, 95 % CI: 1.10, 3.07) increased risks for all-cause, respiratory disease (RD)-cause, and COPD-cause mortalities, separately. Both multiplicative and additive interactions was found between air pollution and noise with the risk of RD-cause mortality. Passive acoustic data collected during 2020 and 2021 were used to monitor changes in both terrestrial and underwater soundscapes, as well as human activity from aircraft and vessels. Passive acoustic data were collected at two artificial reefs south of Long Island, as well as along ocean beaches in Southampton, NY. At the artificial reefs, vessel noise was recorded more frequently during 2020 than in 2021. Commercial vessels and multi-user charter fishing vessels were more abundant during 2020. Peaks in power spectral density occurred at 60, 90 and 120 Hz in 2020 and 2021, which are frequencies consistent with noise generated by commercial vessels, suggesting that vessels are a significant contributor to the soundscape of the artificial reefs. In the terrestrial environment, noise generated by aircraft was more common during 2021. Peaks in power spectral density were measured around 160 and 290 Hz at one of the ocean beach sites. These frequencies are consistent with noise generated by aircraft. Air-conducted (AC) microphones capture the high-quality desired speech and ambient noise, whereas bone-conducted (BC) microphones are immune to ambient noise but only capture band limited speech. This paper proposes a speech enhancement model that leverages the merits of BC and AC speech. The proposed model takes the spectrogram of BC and AC speech as input and fuses them by an attention-based feature fusion module. The backbone network of the proposed model uses the fused signals to estimate mask of the target speech, which is then applied to the noisy AC speech to recover the target speech. The proposed model adopts a lightweight design of densely gated convolutional attention network (DenGCAN) as the backbone network, which contains encoder, bottleneck layers, and decoder. Furthermore, this paper improves an attention gate and integrates it into skip-connections of DenGCAN, which allows the decoder to focus on the key areas of the feature map extracted by the encoder. As the DenGCAN adopts self-attention mechanism, the proposed model has the potential to improve noise reduction performance at the expense of an increased input-output latency. Anthropogenic noise is considered one important global pollutant. The impact of noise on marine invertebrates has been less assessed. The present study evaluated the chronic effect of the motorboat noise obtained from a lagoon's soundscape, the natural habitat of the key crab Neohelice granulata, on its whole embryonic development, considering morphological and physiological carryover effects on embryos and hatched larvae. Results demonstrated that embryonic development was shortened under noise exposure. The effects on advanced embryos, larvae and adult females were: increased heartbeats and non-viable eggs, and decreased fecundity. Biochemical responses showed lipid peroxidation in embryos while antioxidant enzymes were activated in larvae and adults, indicating a counteracting effect related to the life stage. The negative effects on fitness offspring may imply ecological consequences at the population level. Anthropogenic noise is a global pollutant but its potential impacts on early life-stages in fishes are largely unknown. Here, using controlled laboratory experiments, we tested for impacts of continuous or intermittent exposure to low-frequency broadband noise on early life-stages of the common goby (Pomatoschistus microps), a marine fish with exclusive paternal care. Neither continuous nor intermittent noise exposure had an effect on filial cannibalism, showing that males were capable and willing to care for their broods. However, broods reared in continuous noise covered a smaller area and contained fewer eggs than control broods. Moreover, although developmental rate was the same in all treatments, larvae reared by males in continuous noise had, on average, a smaller yolk sac at hatching than those reared in the intermittent noise and control treatments, while larvae body length did not differ. Thus, it appears that the increased consumption of the yolk sac reserve was not utilised for increased growth. This suggests that exposure to noise in early life-stages affects fitness-related traits of surviving offspring, given the crucial importance of the yolk sac reserve during the early life of pelagic larvae. Speech enhancement is crucial both for human and machine listening applications. Over the last decade, the use of deep learning for speech enhancement has resulted in tremendous improvement over the classical signal processing and machine learning methods. However, training a deep neural network is not only time-consuming; it also requires extensive computational resources and a large training dataset. Transfer learning, i.e. using a pretrained network for a new task, comes to the rescue by reducing the amount of training time, computational resources, and the required dataset, but the network still needs to be fine-tuned for the new task. This paper presents a novel method of speech denoising and dereverberation (SD&D) on an end-to-end frozen binaural anechoic speech separation network. The frozen network requires neither any architectural change nor any fine-tuning for the new task, as is usually required for transfer learning. The interaural cues of a source placed inside noisy and echoic surroundings are given as input to this pretrained network to extract the target speech from noise and reverberation. Although the pretrained model used in this paper has never seen noisy reverberant conditions during its training, it performs satisfactorily for zero-shot testing (ZST) under these conditions. It is because the pretrained model used here has been trained on the direct-path interaural cues of an active source and so it can recognize them even in the presence of echoes and noise. ZST on the same dataset on which the pretrained network was trained (homo-corpus) for the unseen class of interference, has shown considerable improvement over the weighted prediction error (WPE) algorithm in terms of four objective speech quality and intelligibility metrics. Also, the proposed model offers similar performance provided by a deep learning SD&D algorithm for this dataset under varying conditions of noise and reverberations. Passive acoustics is an effective method for monitoring marine mammals, facilitating both detection and population estimation. In warm tropical waters, this technique encounters challenges due to the high persistent level of ambient impulsive noise originating from the snapping shrimp present throughout this region. This study presents the development and application of a neural-network based detector for marine-mammal vocalizations in long term acoustic data recorded by us at ten locations in Singapore waters. The detector's performance is observed to be impeded by the high shrimp noise activity. To counteract this, we investigate several techniques to improve detection capabilities in shrimp noise including the use of simple nonlinear denoisers and a machine-learning based denoiser. These are shown to enhance the detection performance significantly. Multiple whale-watching vessels may operate around cetaceans at any one time, and targeted animals may experience underwater noise effects. We hypothesised that the cumulative noise of two vessels with low source levels (SLs) will elicit lower behavioural disturbance in short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus) compared to a single vessel with a higher SL. We measured the behaviour of whales during 26 controls (stationary vessel >300 m) and 44 treatments off Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain). Treatments consisted of vessel approaches mimicking whale-watch scenarios (distance ∼60 m, speed 1.5 kn). Approaches with two simultaneous vessels, with maximum cumulative mid and low-frequency (0.2-110 kHz) weighted source levels (SLs MF-LF ) 137-143 dB, did not affect mother-calf pairs' resting, nursing, diving, respiration rate or inter-breath interval. However, a louder single vessel approach with twin petrol engines at SLs MF - LF 139-151 dB significantly decreased the proportion of time resting for the mother. The results suggest that if a single or two vessels are present, if the cumulative SL is < 143 dB, the behavioural disturbance on the whales will be negligible. Background: While long-term air pollution and noise exposure has been linked to increasing cardiometabolic disease risk, potential effects on body composition remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the associations of long-term air pollution, noise and body composition., Methods: We used repeated data from the LEAD (Lung, hEart, sociAl, boDy) study conducted in Vienna, Austria. Body mass index (BMI; kg/m 2 ), fat mass index (FMI; z-score), and lean mass index (LMI; z-score) were measured using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry at the first (t 0 ; 2011-ongoing) and second (t 1 ; 2017-ongoing) examinations. Annual particulate matter (PM 10 ) and nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) concentrations were estimated with the GRAMM/GRAL model (2015-2021). Day-evening-night (L den ) and night-time (L night ) noise levels from transportation were modeled for 2017 following the European Union Directive 2002/49/EC. Exposures were assigned to residential addresses. We performed analyses separately in children/adolescents and adults, using linear mixed-effects models with random participant intercepts and linear regression models for cross-sectional and longitudinal associations, respectively. Models were adjusted for co-exposure, lifestyle and sociodemographics., Results: A total of 19,202 observations (nt 0  = 12,717, nt 1  = 6,485) from participants aged 6-86 years (mean age at t 0  = 41.0 years; 52.9 % female; mean PM 10  = 21 µg/m 3 ; mean follow-up time = 4.1 years) were analyzed. Among children and adolescents (age ≤ 18 years at first visit), higher PM 10 exposure was cross-sectionally associated with higher FMI z-scores (0.09 [95 % Confidence Interval (CI): 0.03, 0.16]) and lower LMI z-scores (-0.05 [95 % CI: -0.10, -0.002]) per 1.8 µg/m 3 . Adults showed similar trends in cross-sectional associations as children, though not reaching statistical significance. We observed no associations for noise exposures. Longitudinal analyses on body composition changes over time yielded positive associations for PM 10 , but not for other exposures., Conclusion: Air pollution exposure, mainly PM 10 , was cross-sectionally and longitudinally associated with body composition in children/adolescents and adults. Background: White noise machines are widely used as a sleep aid for young children and may lead to poor hearing, speech, and learning outcomes if used incorrectly., Objective: Characterize the potential impact of chronic white noise exposure on early childhood development., Methods: Embase, Ovid MEDLINE, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched from inception through June 2022 for publications addressing the effects of chronic noise exposure during sleep on early development in animals and children. PRISMA-ScR guidelines were followed. Among 644 retrieved publications, 20 met inclusion criteria after review by multiple authors. Seven studies evaluated animal models and 13 studies examined pediatric subjects, including 83 animal and 9428 human subjects., Results: White noise machines can exceed 91 dB on maximum volume, which exceeds the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health noise exposure guidelines for a 2-h work shift in adults. Evidence suggests deleterious effects of continuous moderate-intensity white noise exposure on early development in animal models. Human subject data generally corroborates these models; however, studies also suggest low-intensity noise exposure may be beneficial during sleep., Conclusions: Existing data support the limitation of maximal sound intensity and duration on commercially available white noise devices. The sensitivity of the auditory system is regulated via two major efferent pathways: the medial olivocochlear system that connects to the outer hair cells, and by the middle ear muscles-the tensor tympani and stapedius. The role of the former system in suppressing otoacoustic emissions has been extensively studied, but that of the complementary network has not. In studies of selective attention, decreases in otoacoustic emissions from contralateral stimulation have been ascribed to the medial olivocochlear system, but the acknowledged problem is that the results can be confounded by parallel muscle activity. Here, the potential role of the muscle system is examined through a wide but not exhaustive review of the selective attention literature, and the unifying hypothesis is made that the prominent "physiological noise" detected in such experiments, which is reduced during attention, is the sound produced by the muscles in proximity to the ear-including the middle ear muscles. All muscles produce low-frequency sound during contraction, but the implications for selective attention experiments-in which muscles near the ear are likely to be active-have not been adequately considered. This review and synthesis suggests that selective attention may reduce physiological noise in the ear canal by reducing the activity of muscles close to the ear. Indeed, such an experiment has already been done, but the significance of its findings have not been widely appreciated. Recent research has become increasingly interested in the on-linear associations between noise levels and people's short-term noise annoyance. However, there has been limited investigation into measuring short-term noise annoyance and how different activity contexts may affect these non-linear associations. To address this research gap, this study measured people's short-term noise annoyance using real-time Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) data and the Day Reconstruction Method's (DRM) recalled data. Corresponding noise levels were captured using Global Positioning Systems and portable noise sensors. Employing the Shapley additive explanations method, we examined the non-linear associations between noise level and people's real-time and recalled noise annoyance across different activity contexts. The results indicated that 1) People had greater sensitivity to noise levels in real-time annoyance (non-linear association threshold: 60 dB) compared to recalled annoyance, which had a higher non-linear association threshold of 70 dB. 2) The non-linear associations between noise level and people's real-time/recalled noise annoyance varied between different activity contexts. People tended to be more sensitive to noise in real-time annoyance than recalled annoyance on travel routes and at workplaces. 3) Among the factors examined, the contribution of noise level varied across activity contexts. Noise level contributed more significantly to people's real-time noise annoyance in outdoor recreational sites and on travel routes. These findings enhance our understanding of the non-linear association between noise level and people's short-term noise annoyance, moving beyond the linear paradigm. Migratory fish populations have experienced great declines, and considerable effort have been put into reducing stressors, such as chemical pollution and physical barriers. However, the importance of natural sounds as an information source and potential problems caused by noise pollution remain largely unexplored. The spatial distribution of sound sources and variation in propagation characteristics could provide migratory fish with acoustic cues about habitat suitability, predator presence, food availability and conspecific presence. We here investigated the relationship between natural soundscapes and local river conditions and we explored the presence of human-related sounds in these natural soundscapes. We found that 1a) natural river sound profiles vary with river scale and cross-sectional position, and that 1b) depth, width, water velocity, and distance from shore were all significant factors in explaining local soundscape variation. We also found 2a) audible human activities in almost all our underwater recordings and urban and suburban river parts had elevated sound levels relative to rural river parts. Furthermore, 2b) daytime levels were louder than night time sound levels, and bridges and nearby road traffic were much more prominent with diurnal and weekly patterns of anthropogenic noise in the river systems. We believe our data show high potential for natural soundscapes of low-land river habitat to serve as important environmental cues to migratory fish. Noise, as an unavoidable stress (pressure) source in the modern life, affects animals in many ways, both behaviorally and physiologically. Behavioral changes may be driven by changes in hormone secretion in animals. When animals face with noise stress, the neuroendocrine systems, mainly the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, are activated, which promotes the secretion and release of stress hormones, and then leads to a series of behavioral changes. The behavioral changes can be easily observed, but the changes in physiological indicators such as hormone levels need to be accurately measured. Currently, many studies have measured the variations of stress hormone levels in animals under different noise conditions. Taking glucocorticoid as an example, this paper summarizes the different measurement methods of stress hormones, especially the non-invasive measurement methods, and compares the advantages and shortcomings of them. It provides a variety of measurement choices for the study of related issues, and also helps us to further understand the sources of animal stress, in order to provide a better habitat for animals.

Noise pollution is one of the consequences of urbanization that can cause environmental disturbances in urban areas. Urban ecosystems provide noise reduction services through Urban Green infrastructures (UGIs). Many studies have been conducted to evaluate and model traffic noise, but none have addressed the flow, supply, and demand of noise reduction ecosystem services. The main purpose of this paper is to present a new methodology for estimating flow, supply, and demand for noise reduction in Hamadan city that has not been mentioned in any paper so far. UGIs were classified into six main categories: agricultural lands, gardens, parks, abandoned lands, single trees, and street trees. A total of 57 sampling stations for sound measurement were made in August 2018. The current map of noise pollution (flow) was created using the Kriging method. The amount of supply was measured up to a distance of 50 meters from the main roads based on two approaches (the distance effect and the sound barrier effect). To quantify the demand, the current sound intensity level in the noise-sensitive land uses was compared with standards. Zonal statistics was used for spatial analysis of supply-demand in the urban neighborhood as a working unit. Results showed that at distances of 5m, 10m, 15m, and 20m, the average noise reduction was found to be 1.61, 2.83, 3.92, and 5.33 dB, respectively. Sound barriers at distances of 5m and 10m resulted in an average sound reduction of 1.61 and 2.83 dB, respectively. Individual trees, strip trees, abandoned lands, parks, and gardens led to a decrease in traffic noise by 0.3, 1, 0.1, 3.5, and 4.5 dB, respectively. The clustering analysis revealed a significant spatial clustering of noise pollution in Hamedan. Urban dynamics and anthropogenic interventions led to an increase in noise pollution levels, with relevant implications for worldwide healthcare. Structures created to lessen noise pollution from traffic, industry, or other sources are known as noise, sound, or acoustic barriers. The research paper presents a unique design and development of noise barrier with newly composite mix of acoustic panels and vegetative cover augmenting noise attenuation and aesthetics. The barrier provides a symmetrical design around the vertical axis, hence assures utilization of both faces of the barrier. Additionally, the barrier hosts multiple slots to accommodate multi-material acoustic panels based on diverse noise frequencies and environmental conditions. The barrier integrates movable noise caps at 45°, 90°, 180°, and 270° angles for further attenuation and diversion of noise. A drip irrigation system within the soil box ensures optimal plant growth and stability to barrier. Experimental studies showcase the barrier's performance and its effectiveness in diverse noise scenarios. Objective: To describe the prevalence of routine white noise exposure in children who undergo sound field audiometry., Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted at a pediatric otolaryngology clinic affiliated with an academic tertiary care hospital. The medical records of children who underwent sound field audiometry were reviewed and data was collected regarding demographics and audiogram results. The group was divided into two cohorts based on routine exposure to white noise. Children exposed to white noise were tested with warble tones, while those not exposed were tested with narrow-band noise., Results: 127 patients underwent sound field audiometry testing, of which 96 (75.6%) were reported by their parents to use white noise for sleep. The mean age at time of testing was 1.6 years (95% Confidence Interval [CI] 1.5-1.7). 104 (81.9%) children were able to respond to at least four of the sound field thresholds, and there was no significant difference between the children exposed to white noise and those who were not (P = 0.459). Mean pure tone average (PTA) was 26.2 dB (95% CI 25.2-27.2) and mean speech reception threshold (SRT) was 19.2 dB (95% CI 18.2-20.2). The sound field response rate, PTA, and SRT were similar between these two groups., Conclusions: The routine use of white noise therapy was extremely common in this pediatric population. Marine noise is recognised as a growing threat that can induce maladaptive behavioural changes in many aquatic animals, including fishes. The plainfin midshipman is a soniferous fish with a prolonged breeding period, during which males produce tonal hums that attract females, and grunts and growls during agonistic interactions. In this study, we used acoustic recordings to assess the effects of boat noise on the presence, peak frequencies, and durations of plainfin midshipman calls in the wild. We found that all three call types were less likely to occur, and the peak frequencies of hums and grunts increased in the presence of boat noise. We also show that loud and quiet boat noise affected plainfin midshipman vocalizations similarly. Purpose: A significant portion of individuals undergoing colonoscopy report stress and anxiety before the procedure. The efficacy of white noise as a nonpharmacological intervention on state anxiety and vital signs of individuals waiting for colonoscopy has not been investigated in previous studies. The current study aimed to analyze the effect of white noise on preprocedural anxiety and vital signs among older adults undergoing colonoscopy., Design: A pre-test/post-test quasi-experimental study., Methods: Subjects (N = 60) were older adults in the colonoscopy unit and divided into experimental (n = 30) and control groups (n = 30). The subjects in the experimental group listened to the white noise via binaural headphones for 20 minutes, while the control group received routine pre-endoscopic care. State anxiety and vital signs were assessed before and after intervention using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and vital signs monitor, respectively. The data were analyzed using SPSS-25 software., Findings: No statistically significant differences were found between the two groups on demographic characteristics, state-anxiety, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, pulse rate, and respiratory rate before the intervention (P > .05). A significant difference was found between the experimental and control groups in terms of state-anxiety (P = .00) and pulse rate (P = .003) after the intervention. No significant differences were found between the two groups in terms of systolic blood pressure (P = .69), diastolic blood pressure (.59), and respiratory rate (P = .164) after the intervention., Conclusions: This study provides preliminary evidence supporting the use of white noise in older adults undergoing colonoscopy to reduce anxiety. Excessive noise exposure presents significant health risks to humans, affecting not just the auditory system but also the cardiovascular and central nervous systems. This study focused on three male macaque monkeys as subjects. 90 dB sound pressure level (SPL) pure tone exposure (frequency: 500Hz, repetition rate: 40Hz, 1 min per day, continuously exposed for 5 days) was administered. Assessments were performed before exposure, during exposure, immediately after exposure, and at 7-, 14-, and 28-days post-exposure, employing auditory brainstem response (ABR) tests, electrocardiograms (ECG), and electroencephalograms (EEG). The study found that the average threshold for the Ⅴ wave in the right ear increased by around 30 dB SPL right after exposure (P < 0.01) compared to pre-exposure. This elevation returned to normal within 7 days. The ECG results indicated that one of the macaque monkeys exhibited an RS-type QRS wave, and inverted T waves from immediately after exposure to 14 days, which normalized at 28 days. The other two monkeys showed no significant changes in their ECG parameters. Changes in EEG parameters demonstrated that main brain regions exhibited significant activation at 40Hz during noise exposure. After noise exposure, the power spectral density (PSD) in main brain regions, particularly those represented by the temporal lobe, exhibited a decreasing trend across all frequency bands, with no clear recovery over time. In summary, exposure to 90 dB SPL noise results in impaired auditory systems, aberrant brain functionality, and abnormal electrocardiographic indicators, albeit with individual variations. Background: Despite growing attention from researchers and governments, challenges persist in comprehensively assessing urban sound quality by integrating both quietness and naturalness aspects., Goals: This study aimed to develop an innovative soundscape quality index that concurrently evaluates quietness and naturalness in urban soundscapes. Our objectives included conducting urban soundscape quality mapping, analyzing influential mechanisms, and identifying priority zones for sound environment management., Approaches: We collected sound pressure level (SPL) and raw audio data, from which we computed a normalized difference soundscape index (NDSI). With a dataset comprising 28 explanatory variables encompassing land use, built environment, vegetation characteristics, and temporal factors, we employed the random forest (RF) model to predict 10 indicators, including eight SPL-related indices, NDSI, and the QNS (quietness and naturalness soundscape) index. Crucially, we utilized SHAP (SHapley Additive exPlanations) values to interpret the RF model., Findings: Spatial variations in quietness and naturalness were evident, closely associated with road networks and vegetation, respectively, with discernible temporal variations. The top three variables influencing QNS were distance to major roads, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and proportion of tree coverage. Moreover, interaction effects highlighted dual negative or synergistic promoting effects on QNS from factors such as road width, human disturbance, vegetation configurations, and land cover. Notably, these mechanisms were successfully applied to six typical tourist attractions in Xiamen city, where five types of management zones were mapped based on priority considerations of population density and soundscape quality. Environmental noise is a great burden for the population in Germany, especially in urban areas. People are often exposed not only to one but several noise sources. Long-term exposure to environmental noise can have several and severe adverse effects on human health, such as noise annoyance, sleep disturbances, ischaemic heart disease and depression. Additional burdens arise from multiple exposure to particulate matter or air pollutants. The current article describes the relevant adverse health effects due to long-term environmental noise exposure, discusses the challenges of environmental noise in urban areas different and introduces measures and instruments to abate environmental noise.

This paper addresses a joint training approach applied to a pipeline comprising speech enhancement (SE) and automatic speech recognition (ASR) models, where an acoustic tokenizer is included in the pipeline to leverage the linguistic information from the ASR model to the SE model. The acoustic tokenizer takes the outputs of the ASR encoder and provides a pseudo-label through K-means clustering. To transfer the linguistic information, represented by pseudo-labels, from the acoustic tokenizer to the SE model, a cluster-based pairwise contrastive (CBPC) loss function is proposed, which is a self-supervised contrastive loss function, and combined with an information noise contrastive estimation (infoNCE) loss function. This combined loss function prevents the SE model from overfitting to outlier samples and represents the pronunciation variability in samples with the same pseudo-label. The effectiveness of the proposed CBPC loss function is evaluated on a noisy LibriSpeech dataset by measuring both the speech quality scores and the word error rate (WER). The experimental results reveal that the proposed joint training approach using the described CBPC loss function achieves a lower WER than the conventional joint training approaches. In addition, it is demonstrated that the speech quality scores of the SE model trained using the proposed training approach are higher than those of the standalone-SE model and SE models trained using conventional joint training approaches. An ablation study is also conducted to investigate the effects of different combinations of loss functions on the speech quality scores and WER. Here, it is revealed that the proposed CBPC loss function combined with infoNCE contributes to a reduced WER and an increase in most of the speech quality scores.

Active noise control (ANC) is a typical signal-processing technique that has recently been utilized extensively to combat the urban noise problem. Although numerous advanced adaptive algorithms have been devised to enhance noise reduction performance, few of them have been implemented in actual ANC products due to their high computational complexity and slow convergence. With the rapid development of deep learning technology, Meta-learning-based initialization appears to become an efficient and cost-effective method for accelerating the convergence of adaptive algorithms. However, few dedicated Meta-learning algorithms exist for adaptive signal processing applications, particularly multichannel active noise control (MCANC). Hence, we proposed a modified Model-Agnostic Meta-Learning (MAML) initialization for the MCANC system. 1 Additional theatrical research reveals that the nature of MAML, when applied to signal processing, is the expectation of a weight-sum gradient. Based on this discovery, we devised the Monte-Carlo Gradient Meta-learning (MCGM) algorithm, which employed a more straightforward procedure to accomplish the same performance as the Modified MAML algorithm. Social surveys are conducted to determine how annoyed people are in a certain noise situation. The results are typically presented as exposure-response curves showing the percentage of the area population that are highly annoyed as a function of the noise exposure level. It is a well-known fact that the survey results are not only dependent on the accumulated noise exposure, DNL, DENL, or similar, but also on various other factors such as maximum levels, exposure patterns, noise spectra, etc. A re-analysis of previously reported surveys shows that the results are also, to a large extent, dependent on survey-specific factors like the wording of the annoyance questions, how the questionnaires are presented, response scales, methods of scoring highly annoyed, etc. This paper discusses and quantifies the influence of such factors and suggests ways of comparing results from surveys that have been conducted according to different protocols and different analysis methods.

This paper introduces a method aiming at enhancing the efficacy of speaker identification systems within challenging acoustic environments characterized by noise and reverberation. The methodology encompasses the utilization of diverse feature extraction techniques, including Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs) and discrete transforms, such as Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT), Discrete Sine Transform (DST), and Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT). Additionally, an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) serves as the classifier for this method. Reverberation is modeled using varying-length comb filters, and its impact on pitch frequency estimation is explored via the Auto Correlation Function (ACF). This paper also contributes to the field of cancelable speaker identification in both open and reverberation environments. The proposed method depends on comb filtering at the feature level, deliberately distorting MFCCs. This distortion, incorporated within a cancelable framework, serves to obscure speaker identities, rendering the system resilient to potential intruders. Three systems are presented in this work; a reverberation-affected speaker identification system, a system depending on cancelable features through comb filtering, and a novel cancelable speaker identification system within reverbration environments. The findings revealed that, in both scenarios with and without reverberation effects, the DWT-based features exhibited superior performance within the speaker identification system. This paper presents the results of a listening experiment designed to assess annoyance and perceived loudness (PL) for several unmanned aircraft system (UAS) operations, with the listener simulated in indoor and outdoor positions. This research investigated (i) how participant responses change depending on UAS operation, (ii) which broadband metrics are most suitable for representing annoyance and PL, (iii) differences in noise level required to result in equal participant responses to different operations, and (iv) which sound quality metrics (SQMs) are significant for UAS noise perception. Results indicate annoyance and PL responses were greatest for landing operations with flyovers being the least annoying or loud. LAeq, LASmax, and loudness (N5) were the strongest predictors in representing annoyance. Offset analysis predicted small differences in annoyance responses between flyovers and other operations, but also indicated that flyovers would require an increase to LASmax of 3.3 to 6.3 dB compared to other operations to achieve equal PL. Loudness was the most significant SQM, with minor contributions from impulsivity for annoyance and PL when outside, and tonality for PL when indoors.
