Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate associations between digital urine color and paper urine color with other urine indices to assess hydration status., Methods: Twelve male subjects (mean ± standard deviation; age, 26 ± 8 years; body mass, 57.8 ± 5.3 kg; height, 177.5 ± 8.9 cm; VO 2max , 57.8 ± 5.8 ml·kg -1 ·min -1 ) performed four exercise trials in the heat. Before and following exercise trials, subjects provide urine samples. Urine samples were measured using a digital urine color chart on a portable device screen. Urine samples were also assessed with urine specific gravity (USG), urine osmolality (UOsmo), and a validated paper urine color chart., Results: There were extremely large associations found between digital urine color and paper urine color (r = 0.926, p < 0.001). Correlation coefficients showing associations with USG and UOsmo were similar between digital urine color (USG, r = 0.695, p < 0.001; UOsmo, r = 0.555, p < 0.001) and paper urine color (USG, r = 0.713, p < 0.001; UOsmo, r = 0.570, p < 0.001). Bland-Altman analysis indicated that no proportional bias was observed between digital and paper urine colors (bias, - 0.148; SD of bias, 0.492; 95% LOA, - 1.11, 0.817; p = 0.094)., Conclusions: Strong associations were found between digital and paper urine colors with no proportional bias. Furthermore, the degree of associations with USG and UOsmo was similar between digital and paper urine color. These results indicate that digital urine color is a useful tool to assess hydration status and this method could be used as an alternative method to using paper urine color., (© 2023. Aims: Dehydration is one of the common complications of dysphagia and poses significant risks including hospitalization and mortality, but the relationship between dysphagia and dehydration has received little attention. This study aims to determine the prevalence and risk factors for dehydration of patients with dysphagia in eastern China, and to provide reference for early identification and prevention of dehydration., Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional design was conducted. Three hundred and thirty-seven (n = 337) patients with dysphagia participated in the study between August and December 2022. Information relating to participants' demographic variables, nutrition, cognition, functional, hydration status and fluid intake was collected. Univariate analysis was used to examine related impact factors, and then binary logistic regression analysis was conducted to determine reliable impact factors., Results: Among 337 patients with dysphagia, the average age was 63.47 ± 16.96, most participants were male (72.1%) and married (91.7%). The prevalence of dehydration was calculated to be 43.9%, the mean plasma osmolality score was 293.53 mmol/L. Diseases with the highest prevalence were stroke (78.3%), followed by hypertension (63.5%). The risk for dehydration increased with older age, usage of more medicines such as diuretics and beta-blockers, worse functional status and lower fluid intake., Conclusion: This study found a high percentage of dehydration in patients with dysphagia. Dehydration priming (DP) induces stress memory which plays a positive role in plant adaptability, but it is not well understood how DP differentially regulates subsequent dehydration (cis priming) or salt (trans priming) tolerance at the post-translational level. Purpose of this study was to identify proteins, phosphorylation levels and sites, and relevant metabolic pathways for DP-induced dehydration or salt tolerance in Agrostis stolonifera. DP-induced differentially regulated proteins (DRPs) were mostly located in the cytoplasm, chloroplast, and cell membrane, and differentially regulated phosphoproteins (DRPPs) were mostly nuclear proteins and cytoplasmic proteins. DP regulated common phosphorylation sites ([SP] and [RxxS]) under dehydration and salt conditions and also individually affected 8 or 11 phosphorylation sites under dehydration or salt stress. DP-regulated DRPPs were mainly rich in glycolysis and glutathione metabolism pathways, RNA splicing, and dynamin family proteins under dehydration stress, whereas DP-regulated salt tolerance was mainly related to chlorophyll metabolism, photosynthesis, MAPK signaling cascade, and ABC transporter I family at the phosphorylation level. In addition, the DP also significantly up-regulated phosphorylation of histones (ATXR3 and SETD1A) in response to subsequent dehydration and salt stress as well as abundances of antioxidant enzymes, dynamin family protein, and KCS6 under dehydration stress or abundances of PETE, HMGA, XTH, and ABCI6 under salt stress, respectively. Transcriptomics analysis further indicated that DP-regulated dehydration or salt tolerance was also related to transcriptional regulation in the early stage. Current results provided better understanding of the role of stress memory in plant adaptability to repeated or crossed stress via post-translational modifications (PTMs). SIGNIFICANCE: Recurrent moderate drought may buffer drought legacies in many plant species. When plants were exposed to repeated drought stress, their adaptability to subsequent stress could be enhanced, which is known as "stress memory". In the face of anthropogenic warming, drought poses an escalating threat to food production. C 4 plants offer promise in addressing this threat. C 4 leaves operate a biochemical CO 2 concentrating mechanism that exchanges metabolites between two partially isolated compartments (mesophyll and bundle sheath), which confers high-productivity potential in hot climates boosting water use efficiency. However, when C 4 leaves experience dehydration, photosynthesis plummets. This paper explores the physiological mechanisms behind this decline. In a fast dehydration experiment, we measured the fluxes and isotopic composition of water and CO 2 in the gas exchanged by leaves, and we interpreted results using a novel biochemical model and analysis of elasticity. Our findings show that, while CO 2 supply to the mesophyll and to the bundle sheath persisted during dehydration, there was a decrease in CO 2 conductance at the bundle sheath-mesophyll interface. We interpret this as causing a slowdown of intercellular metabolite exchange - an essential feature of C 4 photosynthesis. This would impede the supply of reducing power to the bundle sheath, leading to phosphoglycerate accumulation and feedback inhibition of Rubisco carboxylation. Heavy metal contamination increases plant susceptibility to both biotic and abiotic stresses. However, the comprehensive impact of heavy metal pollution on plant hydraulics, which is crucial for plant productivity, and the interaction between heavy metal stress and environmental factors on plant health are not yet fully understood. In this study, we investigated the effects of cadmium exposure on plant-water relations and hydraulics of Solanum lycopersicum L., cultivar Piccadilly. Particular attention was given to leaf hydraulic conductance (K L ) in response to cadmium pollution and dehydration. Cadmium exposure exhibited negligible impacts on tomato productivity but resulted in significant differences in pressure-volume derived traits. Leaves and roots of Cd-treated plants showed reduced wall stiffness compared to control samples. However, Cd-treated leaves had a less negative turgor loss point (Ψ tlp ), whereas Cd-treated roots exhibited more negative Ψ tlp values due to lower osmotic potential at full turgor compared to control samples. Leaves and root cells of Cd-treated plants showed higher values of saturated water content compared to control plants, along with a distinct mineral profile between the two experimental groups. Despite similar leaf water potential thresholds for 50% and 80% loss of K L in control and cadmium-treated leaves, plants grown in cadmium-polluted soil showed higher leaf cell damages even under well watered conditions. This, in turn, affected the plant ability to recover from drought upon rehydration by compromising cell rehydration ability. Background: Perilla (Perilla frutescens L. Britt.) is an important oilseed and medicinal crop that frequently faces seasonal drought stress during seed germination, leading to a loss of dehydration tolerance (DT), which affects seed emergence and significantly reduces yield. DT has been successfully re-established for many species seeds. However, the physiological mechanisms and gene networks that regulate Perilla's response to DT loss remain unclear., Results: Phenotypic analysis determined that the window for DT in Perilla seeds occurs at radicle lengths of 0-4 mm. Integrating physiological and transcriptomic analyses revealed that the loss of DT promotes the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and regulates oxidase activity and gene expression. This implies that DT may influence seed germination by modulating ROS activity. Four radicle length (i.e., 0, 1, 3, and 4 mm) stages were analyzed, and 262 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified that responded to DT. The majority of these genes were associated with epigenetics, cell function, and transport mechanisms. Analysis of expression data shows that desiccation inhibits the signaling network of genes encoding small secreted peptides (SSPs) and receptor-like protein kinases (RLKs). Finally, a relevant network diagram of DT response was proposed. Based on this information, we have revealed the metabolism regulation maps of the four main pathways involving these DEGs (i.e., metabolic pathways, cell cycle, plant hormone signal transduction, and motor proteins)., Conclusions: In conclusion, these findings deepen our understanding of gene network responses to DT during Perilla seed germination and provide potential target genes for the genetic improvement of drought resistance in this crop., Competing Interests: Declarations Ethics approval and consent to participate The seeds of Perilla 1 and Perilla 3 used in this study were provided by North University of China. In the face of climate change, understanding the metabolic responses of vulnerable animals to abiotic stressors like anurans is crucial. Water restriction and subsequent dehydration is a condition that can threaten populations and lead to species decline. This study examines metabolic variations in the subtropical frog Boana pulchella exposed to dehydration resulting in a 40% loss of body water followed by 24 h of rehydration. During dehydration, the scaled mass index decreases, and concentrations of metabolic substrates alter in the brain and liver. The activity of antioxidant enzymes increases in the muscle and heart, emphasizing the importance of catalase in the rehydration period. Glycogenesis increases in the muscle and liver, indicating a strategy to preserve tissue water through glycogen storage. These findings suggest that B. pulchella employs specific metabolic mechanisms to survive exposure to water restriction, highlighting tissue-specific variations in metabolic pathways and antioxidant defenses. Background: Acutely ill older patients frequently suffer not only from their acute disease, but also polymorbidity and frailty. Dehydration is another typical symptom, usually occurring in its both forms: low-intake dehydration and volume depletion. POCUS is goal-directed bedside ultrasound examination and several studies refer to its positive impact on hydration assessment. The aim of our study was to determine whether POCUS might influence (de)hydration diagnostics and/or treatments in older patients with acute illness., Methods: We randomized 120 acutely ill patients, aged ≥65 years, into POCUS and non-POCUS groups. All participants underwent routine laboratory tests, including haematocrit, serum and urine osmolality, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine, BUN/creatinine ratio, and C-reactive protein (CRP). POCUS was performed twice during the first two days to determine chest and abdominal status, with inferior vena cava (IVC) measurements. Length of hospital stay (HL) and consumption of infused fluids (CIF) was evaluated too. Data were analysed with exploratory methods and appropriate statistics., Results: Among all participants, the serum osmolality significantly correlated with age, BUN, creatinine and CIF. HL correlated with CRP and CIF. No significant correlations between IVC and other followed parameters were found. The POCUS group consumed significantly less infused fluids than the non-POCUS group, what could be influenced by POCUS examination of defined body compartments., Conclusion: Dehydration is a common feature in older individuals and its diagnostics is rather complicated. The role of POCUS in assessing hydration status remains unclear. Dehydration is a common problem in the aging population. Medical professionals can detect dehydration using either blood or urine tests. This requires experimental tests in the lab as well as urine and blood samples to be obtained from the patients. This paper proposed 100 GHz millimeter wave radiometry for early detection of dehydration. Reflectance measurements were performed on healthy and dehydrated patients of both genders (120 males and 80 females) in the aging population. Based on the cause of dehydration, the patient groups were divided into three categories: (1) patients dehydrated due to less thirst sensation, (2) patients dehydrated due to illnesses (vomiting and diarrhea), and (3) patients dehydrated due to diabetes. Reflectance measurements were performed on eight locations: (1) the palm, (2) the back of the hand, (3) the fingers, (4) the inner wrist, (5) the outer wrist, (6) the volar side of the arm, (7) the dorsal surface of the arm, and (8) the elbow. Skin dehydrated due to vomiting and diarrhea was found to have lower reflectance at all the measurement locations compared with healthy and other types of dehydrated skin. The elbow region showed the highest difference in reflectance between healthy and dehydrated skin. This indicates that radiometric sensitivity is sufficient to detect dehydration in a few seconds. This will reduce the patient's waiting time and the healthcare professional's intervention time as well as allow early treatment of dehydration, thus avoiding admission to hospitals.

Objective: Farmworkers are at increased risk of adverse health outcomes related to occupational heat exposure and inadequate access to water, shade, or rest breaks. Presently, there is a dearth of studies examining the prevalence of dehydration and related factors in U.S. farmworkers. Our objectives were to characterize hydration status during typical workdays and to identify risk factors associated with increased dehydration in migrant farmworkers employed in Florida., Methods: Urine samples were collected and analyzed for urine specific gravity (USG) 2-3 times per person per day over five days in May 2021 and 2022. Data collection included demographic characteristics, wet-bulb-globe-temperature (WBGT), and information on working conditions (task type, duration, and crop units harvested), fluid intake, clothing worn, and heat safety behaviors. Multivariable mixed regression models were used to evaluate risk factors associated with change in USG levels (continuous) during a work shift., Results: A total of 111 farmworkers participated in this study providing 1020 cumulative USG measurements, of which 96.8% of end-of-shift USG samples were above 1.020 indicating potential dehydration. In multivariable models, dehydration assessed using change in USG levels significantly declined with age (β = -0.078; 95%CI: 0.150, -0.006) but showed significant increase with body mass index (β = 0.016; 95%CI: 0.003, 0.028), WGBT (β = 0.054; 95%CI:0.044, 0.064), mean shift duration, and state of primary residence. Background: Acute gastroenteritis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in children. The aim of this study was to explore assessment and management of children aged between 6 and 48 months presenting to the emergency department (ED) with acute gastroenteritis., Methods: This retrospective cohort study included 340 children aged 6-48 months. Data were collected by medical record audit for children presenting between 1 January and 31 December 2019., Results: General assessments were appropriate, specific dehydration assessment, blood pressure measurement and fluid balance chart documentation could be improved. Management of children with severe or no/mild dehydration was largely compliant with current recommendations: there was variability in management of children with moderate dehydration. There were no significant differences between Australian Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal children in terms of dehydration severity and pathology abnormalities, however there were differences in management strategies., Conclusions: ED management of children with gastroenteritis was largely consistent with, or superior to, evidence-based recommendations. There was variability in the management of children with moderate dehydration and Australian Aboriginal children but it is unclear whether this is suboptimal or patient specific care. Water stress is a major cause of yield loss in peanut cultivation. Melatonin seed priming has been used to enhance stress tolerance in several crops, but not in peanut. We investigated the impact of seed priming with melatonin on the growth, development, and drought tolerance of two peanut cultivars, TUFRunner™ '511', a drought tolerant cultivar, and New Mexico Valencia A, a drought sensitive cultivar. Peanut seed priming tests using variable rates of melatonin (0-200 μM), indicated that 50 μM of melatonin resulted in more uniform seed germination and improved seedling growth in both cultivars under non stress conditions. Seed priming with melatonin also promoted vegetative growth, as evidenced by higher whole-plant transpiration, net CO 2 assimilation, and root water uptake under both well-watered and water stress conditions in both cultivars. Higher antioxidant activity and protective osmolyte accumulation, lower reactive oxygen species accumulation and membrane damage were observed in primed compared with non-primed plants. Seed priming with melatonin induced a growth promoting effect that was more evident under well-watered conditions for TUFRunnner™ '511', whereas for New Mexico Valencia A, major differences in physiological responses were observed under water stress conditions. New Mexico Valencia A primed plants exhibited a more sensitized stress response, with faster down-regulation of photosynthesis and transpiration compared with non-primed plants. This study assessed the effect of season on cognitive function and psycho-physiological responses during a 14-day swing in mine-service workers. Cognitive function, thermal sensation and comfort, rating of perceived exertion, fatigue, hydration, core temperature and heart rate were assessed throughout a shift, on three separate days over a swing. Working memory and processing efficiency did not differ between seasons (p > 0.05), however counting and recall latencies improved throughout the swing (p < 0.05). Participants reported greater fatigue post-shift compared to pre-shift (p < 0.05). Thermal sensation, thermal comfort, and hydration were significantly elevated in summer compared to winter (p < 0.05). Specifically, workers were significantly/minimally dehydrated in summer/winter (urinary specific gravity = 1.025 ± 0.007/1.018 ± 0.007). Although cognitive function and thermal strain were not impaired in summer compared to winter, it is essential to reinforce worker's knowledge regarding hydration requirements. A 2D plane strain extended finite element method (XFEM) model was developed to simulate three-point bending fracture toughness tests for human bone conducted in hydrated and dehydrated conditions. Bone microstructures and crack paths observed by micro-CT imaging were simulated using an XFEM damage model. Critical damage strains for the osteons, matrix, and cement lines were deduced for both hydrated and dehydrated conditions and it was found that dehydration decreases the critical damage strains by about 50%. Subsequent parametric studies using the various microstructural models were performed to understand the impact of individual critical damage strain variations on the fracture behavior. The study revealed the significant impact of the cement line critical damage strains on the crack paths and fracture toughness during the early stages of crack growth. Furthermore, a significant sensitivity of crack growth resistance and crack paths on critical strain values of the cement lines was found to exist for the hydrated environments where a small change in critical strain values of the cement lines can alter the crack path to give a significant reduction in fracture resistance. In contrast, in the dehydrated state where toughness is low, the sensitivity to changes in critical strain values of the cement lines is low. Evapotranspiration is a key hydrological process for reducing stormwater runoff in bioretention systems, regardless of their physical configuration. Understanding the volumes of stormwater that can be returned to the atmosphere via evapotranspiration is, therefore, a key consideration in the design of any bioretention system. This study establishes the evapotranspiration dynamics of three common, structurally different, bioretention vegetation treatments (an Amenity Grass mix, and mono-cultures of Deschampsia cespitosa and Iris sibirica) compared with an un-vegetated control using lab-scale column experiments. Via continuous mass and moisture loss data, observed evapotranspiration rates were compared with those predicted by the FAO-56 Penman-Monteith model for five 14-day dry periods during Spring 2021, Summer 2021, and Spring 2022. Soil moisture reductions over the 14-day trials led to reduced rates of evapotranspiration. This necessitated the use of a soil moisture extraction function alongside a crop coefficient to represent actual evapotranspiration from FAO-56 Penman-Monteith reference evapotranspiration estimates. Crop coefficients (K c ) varied between 0.65 and 2.91, with a value of 1.0 identified as a recommended default value in the absence of treatment-specific empirical data. Volume depletion is a common condition and a frequent cause of hospitalization in children. Proper assessment of the patient includes a detailed history and a thorough physical examination. Biochemical tests may be useful in selected cases. Understanding the pathophysiology of fluid balance is necessary for appropriate management. A clinical dehydration scale assessing more physical findings may help to determine dehydration severity. Most dehydrated children can be treated orally; however, intravenous therapy may be indicated in patients with severe volume depletion, in those who have failed oral therapy, or in children with altered consciousness or significant metabolic abnormalities. Understanding the relationship between stomatal conductance (g s ) and photosynthesis (A n ) under water stress conditions can improve the accuracy of land surface models for estimating the gas exchange of crop canopies with the atmosphere. However, little is known about the effect of water stress on this relationship in crops. A glasshouse experiment was, therefore, conducted to investigate changes in the linear relationship between g s and A n owing to water stress in rice and the association with soil moisture content. Severe (SWS), mild (MWS), and no water stress (NWS) conditions were applied from flowering onwards and the gas exchange in fully developed flag leaves was assessed weekly. The Ball-Woodrow-Berry linear model was used to assess the relationship between g s and A n under different treatments. SWS had a significant effect and reduced the slope of the linear relationship between g s and A n by 30 % compared with NWS. Only in SWS were A n and g s strongly correlated with soil water content. Our study revealed that changes in the linear relationship through a reduction in the slope imply a conservative water-use strategy for rice under intense water stress. Biochar is a soil amendment that can change soil's physical and hydraulic properties. However, biochar application is far from being a 'one size fits-all' approach. The impact of the management practices is dependent on biochar type (feedstock and production conditions), application depth and method, climate and site characteristics. Hence, this study aims to enrich the available inconclusive information on how biochar could affect clay loamy soil and to assess the potential impact of the induced change on water stress mitigation of rain-fed durum wheat under the specific condition of the semi-arid environment of North West of Tunisia. A field experiment was investigated in which three biochar rates 0 (B0), 10 (equivalent to 0.5% of weight) (B1) and 20 t/ha (equivalent to 1% of weight), (B2), were tested. Other laboratory analysis allowed the evaluation of soil water retention curve (SWRC), saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks), dry density (ρ b ) and biostress biomarkers such as glutathione-S-transferase (GST), catalase activities (CAT) and malondialdehyde content (MDA) as well as yield attributes. Results showed that treatment B2 significantly decreased ρ b and Ks with relative change values of about -3.1% and -19%. Consequently, SWRC showed a better water retention capacity, mostly from saturation to matric potential value (h) of 33 kPa. Total (TAWC), plant (PAWC) and readily (RAWC) available water contents, significantly increased under B2 with relative changes of +6%, +44% and +44% respectively. Moreover, GST and CAT were also boosted under B2. Consequently, biological and grain yields as well as grain water use efficiency (GWUE) significantly increased. GWUE increased from 0.81 ± 0.04 in B0 to 1.09 ± 0.01 kg/m 3 in B2. The correlation analysis showed a significant and positive correlation, between GWUE and soil water parameters (θs, θfc and θmre) suggesting the indirect effect of biochar on water-use efficiency for grain yield of wheat. To reduce the current billions of people facing water scarcity, which is a dedicated Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target, different actions and measures are required. This includes food labelling which accounts for water scarcity, to help consumers make informed choices when purchasing food products. The European Commission is considering the proposal of a "Sustainable food labelling framework" in the last quartal of 2023, within its ambitious Farm to Fork strategy. Implementing such a food label in the EU has a potential reach of 447 million consumers. Most prominent label candidate is its own developed PEF (Product Environmental Footprint), a tool already implemented by some retailers in the EU. However, this paper argues that the category water scarcity in the PEF has two major flaws. First, it does not account for water efficiency of a product, which is essential to solve global water stress. Second, the spatial resolution for water stress is much too coarse. The current PEF tool makes comparisons between products useless and even misleading. Its use might worsen global water scarcity, as it provides producers and consumers the wrong incentives. Urgent revision of the category water stress in the PEF is required. Regular spatial patterns of vegetation are a common sight in drylands. Their formation is a population-level response to water stress that increases water availability for the few via partial plant mortality. At the individual level, plants can also adapt to water stress by changing their phenotype. Phenotypic plasticity of individual plants and spatial patterning of plant populations have extensively been studied independently, but the likely interplay between the two robust mechanisms has remained unexplored. In this paper, we incorporate phenotypic plasticity into a multi-level theory of vegetation pattern formation and use a fascinating ecological phenomenon, the Namibian "fairy circles," to demonstrate the need for such a theory. We show that phenotypic changes in the root structure of plants, coupled with pattern-forming feedback within soil layers, can resolve two puzzles that the current theory fails to explain: observations of multi-scale patterns and the absence of theoretically predicted large-scale stripe and spot patterns along the rainfall gradient. Okara is the insoluble pulp that remains after the grinding and filtration of soybeans during the production of soymilk and tofu. As it retains a noteworthy quantity of nutrients, there has been an increasing emphasis in the utilization of this residue for the development of sustainable processes. This study focused on assessing the environmental impact of employing okara as a medium for fermenting and dehydrating probiotic bacteria at laboratory scale. The evaluation was carried out using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology, considering the entire process lifecycle. Whole okara and defatted okara were used as culture media for Lactiplantibacillus plantarum CIDCA 83114, followed by dehydration (either freeze-drying or spray-drying) and subsequent storage. For the purpose of comparison, both scenarios (whole and defatted okara) were evaluated using 1 kg of dehydrated final product for storage, as functional unit. Based on experimental results, the conservation of the received okara and the dehydration-storage (e.g., freezing and freeze-drying) phases were identified as the most significant environmental hotspots responsible for the most substantial impacts of the processes. Knowledge of powdered dairy products was addressed, emphasizing powdered milk, cheese, and yogurt. These are very versatile products, and because they are within the field of innovations in developing dairy products, their production and application have been encouraged. This work aimed to reveal the possibilities of obtaining an approach to powder dairy products, the environmental and economic aspects involved, the physical properties analysis, and finally a conclusions including the findings and prospects. When comparing possible processes of powder milk obtaining the preferred comprises the following steps: fat standardization; pasteurization; evaporation using a multi-effect evaporator with the inclusion of one of two options to increase the evaporator's energy efficiency: thermal or mechanical vapor recompression; dehydration (spray drying); and adding an emulsifier (lecithin) or using the fluidized bed dryer or return of fines, resulting in a powder product with instantaneous dissolution. The following sequence is recommended for cheese powder: ingredients addition, melting, dehydration (spray drying), and finalizing with cooling. Yogurt powder has its production process initiated by agitation, ultrafiltration, and spray drying. Growing water problems have promoted the Chinese government to implement the strictest water resources management system (SWRMS), the first national policy that puts into practice the concept of "safe operating space" for human water use. Here, we investigate the impact of the SWRMS on China's water use and water stress based on a newly compiled high-resolution and multi-sectoral water use dataset. Results indicate that China's total water use (TWU) increased significantly from 549 km 3  yr -1 to 610 km 3  yr -1 between 2000 and 2012 (i.e., the pre-SWRMS period), but decreased remarkably in the post-SWRMS period (2012-2020), reaching 565 km 3  yr -1 by the year 2020. The decline in TWU was attributed to the improvements of irrigation and industrial water use efficiency (WUE), which were strictly controlled by the SWRMS at various administrative levels of China. The improved WUE has yielded about ∼90 km 3 of water savings per year, freeing 17 prefectures from extreme water stress that affects 6% of China's population and 10% of its GDP. Although the improved WUE caused a significant decrease in TWU, the reduction in China's average water stress was insignificant due to the considerable influence of water availability. We further identified hotspots with great potential for water stress reduction, mainly in northwestern China, and hotspots at high risks of water security, primarily on the North China Plain. The sustainability of industrial production, especially for highly water-demanding processes, is strictly related to water resource availability and to the dynamic interactions between natural and anthropogenic requirements over the spatial and temporal scales. The increase in industrial water demand raises the need to assess the related environmental sustainability, facing the occurrence of global and local water stress issues. The identification of reliable methodologies, based on simple indices and able to consider the impact on local water basins, may play a basilar role in water sustainability diagnosis and decision-making processes for water management and land use planning. The present work focalized on the definition of a methodology based on the calculation of indicators and indices in the view of providing a synthetic, simple, and site-specific assessment tool for industrial water cycle sustainability. The methodology was built starting from geo-referenced data on water availability and sectorial uses derived for Italian sub-basins. According to the data monthly time scale, the proposed indices allowed for an industrial water-related impacts assessment, able to take into account the seasonal variability of local resources. Three industrial factories, located in northern (SB1, SB2) and central (SB3) Italian sub-basins, were selected as case studies (CS1, CS2, CS3) to validate the methodology. The companies were directly involved and asked to provide some input data. The methodology is based on the calculation of three synthetic indexes: the Withdrawal and Consumption water Stress Index (WCSI) allowed for deriving a synthetic water stress level assessment at the sub-basin scale, also considering the spatial and temporal variations; the industrial water use sustainability assessment was achieved by calculating the Overall Factory-to-Basin Impact (OFBI) and the Internal Water Reuse (IWR) indices, which allowed a preliminary evaluation of the factories' impacts on the sub-basin water status, considering the related water uses and the overall pressures on the reference territorial context. The WCSI values highlighted significant differences between the northern sub-basins, characterised by limited water stress (WCSI SB1  = 0.221; WCSI SB2  = 0.047), and the central ones, more subjected to high stress (WCSI SB3  = 0.413). The case studies CS1 and CS3 showed to exert a more significant impact on the local water resource (OFBI CS1  = 0.18%; OFBI CS2  = 0.192%) with respect to CS2 (OFBI = 0.002%), whereas the IWR index revealed the different company's attitude in implementing water reuse practices (IWR CS1  = 40%; IWR CS1  = 27%; IWR CS1  = 99%). Soft X-ray tomography (SXT) is an imaging technique to visualise whole cells without fixation, staining, and sectioning. For SXT imaging, cells are cryopreserved and imaged at cryogenic conditions. Such 'near-to-native' state imaging is in high demand and initiated the development of the laboratory table-top SXT microscope. As many laboratories do not have access to cryogenic equipment, we asked ourselves whether SXT imaging is feasible on dry specimens. This paper shows how the dehydration of cells can be used as an alternative sample preparation to obtain ultrastructure information. We compare different dehydration processes on mouse embryonic fibroblasts in terms of ultrastructural preservation and shrinkage. Based on this analysis, we chose critical point (CPD) dried cells for SXT imaging. In comparison to cryopreserved and air-dried cells, CPD dehydrated cells show high structural integrity although with about 3-7 times higher X-ray absorption for cellular organelles. As the difference in X-ray absorption values between organelles is preserved, 3D anatomy of CPD-dried cells can be segmented and analysed, demonstrating the applicability of CPD-dried sample preparation for SXT imaging. LAY DESCRIPTION: Soft X-ray tomography (SXT) is an imaging technique that allows to see the internal structures of cells without the need for special treatments like fixation or staining. Typically, SXT imaging involves freezing and imaging cells at very low temperatures. In this work, the novel use of ultrasonic pre-treatment and edible coating treatment during osmosis dehydration to optimize the weight reduction, moisture loss, sucrose gain, rehydration, and surface shrinkage using a response surface methodology (RSM) based on a central composite design (CCD) technique was successfully conducted on grapefruit slices. The process parameters include sonication pre-treatment time (5-10 min), xanthan-gum-based edible coating (0.1%-0.3%, w/w), and sucrose concentration (20-50 Brix), were examined and optimized for osmosis dehydration of grapefruit slices. At each step, three grapefruit slices were immersed in an ultrasonic water bath at 40 kHz, 150 W, and 20 C. Then, the sonicated slices were placed in a container contain sucrose and xanthan, and the container was put in a 50 C water-bath for 1 h. The optimum concentration of xanthan gum, sucrose, and time of treatment were predicted to be 0.15%, 20.0 Brix, and 10.0  min, respectively. Under this optimum condition, estimated values of response variables are as follows: weight reduction 14.14%, moisture loss 25.92%, solids gain 11.78%, rehydration ratio 203.40%, and shrinkage 2.90%. The weight reduction and moisture loss increased when the sonication time and sucrose concentration increased. Results demonstrated that the experimental data could be adequately fitted into a linear model with p-value ranging from 0.0001 to 0.0309 for all the variables examined. The rehydration of dried samples increased when xanthan concentration increased. The review is focused on a comparative analysis of the literature data on the ultrastructural reorganization of leaf cells of higher plants, which differ in their response to low sub-damaging temperatures. The importance of adaptive structural reorganization of cells as a special feature contributing to the surviving strategy of plants existing under changed conditions is emphasized. The adaptive strategy of cold-tolerant plants combines the structural, functional, metabolic, physiological and biochemical reorganization of cells and tissues. These changes constitute a unified program directed to protecting against dehydration and oxidative stress, as well as maintaining basic physiological processes, and above all, photosynthesis. The ultrastructural markers of cold-tolerant plants adaptation to low sub-damaging temperatures include some particular changes in cell morphology. Namely: the following: an increase in the volume of the cytoplasm; the formation of new membrane elements in it; an increase in the size and number of chloroplasts and mitochondria; concentration of mitochondria and peroxisomes near chloroplasts; polymorphism of mitochondria; an increase in the number of cristae in them; the appearance of outgrowths and invaginations in chloroplasts; lumen expansion in the thylakoids; the formation in chloroplasts "sun type" membrane system with reduction in the number and size of grana and domination of non-appressed thylakoids membranes. Due to this adaptive structural reorganization cold-tolerant plants are able to function actively during chilling. Amphibians such as the wood frogs,Rana sylvatica, are a primary example of a freeze-tolerant vertebrate that undergoes whole body freezing. Multiple adaptations including sequestering 65-70% of total body water as extracellular/extra organ ice and producing massive amounts of glucose as a cryoprotectant support this. Interestingly, the high glucose levels induced in response to freezing can amplify oxidative stress's effects (reactive oxygen species, ROS) and induce inflammation and mitochondrial dysfunction. Since both freezing and dehydration stress (independent of freezing) can render wood frogs hyperglycemic, this study focussed on these two stresses to elucidate the role of a scaffold protein thioredoxin interacting protein (TXNIP), which localizes in multiple compartments inside the cell under hyperglycemic conditions and mediate diverse stress responses. The results from this study suggest a stress-specific response of TXNIP in inducing the cell-damaging pathway of inflammasome activation via its cytoplasmic localization during freezing. Interestingly, mitochondrial localization of TXNIP did not leads to increase in its binding to thioredoxin 2 (TRX-2) and activating the dysfunction of this organelle by releasing a mitochondrial protein cytochrome c (Cyt c) in cytoplasm under both freezing and dehydration stresses. Post-translational modifications of TXNIP hinted on changes in the regulating proteins involved in the inflammasome and mitochondrial dysfunction pathways, whereas sequential differences (cytosine residues) of amphibian TXNIP (compared to mammalian) assessed via 3D-modeling attributed to its weak binding to TRX-2. A new method for the drying of beef and chicken meats at low temperatures (4 °C) was developed by using a composite film based on sodium carboxymethyl cellulose-gum Arabic (SG) with anthocyanins from Cinnamomum camphora fruit peel (ANC.P, 0, 1, 1.5 and 2%). After incorporation of ANC.P into SG, the physicochemical properties, morphological characteristics, melting, molecular, antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of the resulting dehydration films were improved. Film-dried beef and chicken slices showed higher values of dehydration ratio on day 6 (54.58% and 72.06%, respectively) compared with the control samples without film (4.55% and 7.04%, respectively). Glacial aridity of the Pleistocene was inhospitable for the cool temperate rainforest tree Nothofagus cunninghamii over most of its current range in southeastern Australia, particularly in eastern Tasmania. A chloroplast DNA phylogeographic study was undertaken to investigate whether this species was likely to have survived in situ or conforms to a dispersal model of postglacial recovery. Twenty-three chloroplast haplotypes were identified by PCR-RFLP and direct sequencing of 2164 base pairs from 213 N. cunninghamii individuals collected in a range-wide survey. Fine-scale haplotype distribution was investigated using PCR-RFLP in eastern Tasmania. Deep chloroplast divergence occurred in N. cunninghamii. The single haplotype of the sister species, N. moorei, was nested among N. cunninghamii haplotypes. The distribution of N. cunninghamii haplotypes supports: multiple glacial refugia in coastal and inland western Tasmania, the centre of haplotype diversity; glacial survival in the central highlands of Victoria, corroborating pollen data; and the long-term occupation of eastern Tasmania because of the presence of a unique deeply diverged chloroplast lineage. Nothofagus cunninghamii withstood glacial aridity within multiple regions in apparently nonequable climates. This finding contributes to a growing understanding of how the resilience of temperate species during glacial periods has shaped modern biota.

Despite some studies on tea leaf cuticular wax, their component changes during dehydration and withering treatments in tea processing and suspected relation with tea flavor quality formation remain unknown. Here, we showed that tea leaf cuticular wax changed drastically in tea leaf development, dehydration, or withering treatment during tea processing, which affected tea flavor formation. Caffeine was found as a major component of leaf cuticular wax. Caffeine and inositol contents in leaf cuticular wax increased during dehydration and withering treatments. Comparisons showed that tea varieties with higher leaf cuticular wax loading produced more aroma than these with lower cuticular wax loading, supporting a positive correlation between tea leaf cuticular wax loading and degradation with white tea aroma formation. Dehydration or withering treatment of tea leaves also increased caffeine and inositol levels in leaf cuticular wax and triggered cuticular wax degradation into various molecules, that could be related to tea flavor formation. Thus, tea leaf cuticular waxes not only protect tea plants but also contribute to tea flavor formation. Dehydration is a taphonomic process that affects nearly all skeletal remains, yet there is a dearth of evidence on this process within the forensic taphonomy literature. When considering the forensic implications of skeletal dehydration, a particular area of concern is sharp force trauma due to its global prominence in forensic cases. In an attempt to address these literature gaps and quantify the effects that dehydration has on skeletal elements, a controlled experiment subjected Sus domesticus (i.e., domestic pig) radii samples (n = 36) to laboratory-induced dehydration after they were inflicted with knife trauma. All samples were photographed pre- and post-dehydration; bone section and kerf mark length, width, and area were then measured from these photographs using ImageJ. Statistical analysis of pre- and post-dehydration samples showed that all measurements experienced significant (p ≤ 0.001) shrinkage, with bone sample area shrinking an average of 8.8 % and kerf mark area an average of 29.7 %. Alterations in length, width and area between the kerf marks and bone samples showed a weak, moderate, and strong correlation, respectively. Developing effective strategies to alleviate increasing water stress in China requires an understanding of how consumption and production drive water stress footprints (WSF) at a high resolution and multiple spatial and temporal scales. However, current Chinese multi-regional input-output (CMRIO) models have limited resolution. Here, we build a high-resolution international MRIO model covering 31 Chinese provinces, 163 sectors, to address this issue, and then analyze the impact of changes in China's interprovincial and international trade patterns on the WSF from 2012 to 2017. We find that China's water stress embodied in inter-provincial trade has increased year after year, to 5606 km 3 H 2 O-eq in 2017, exceeding 50 % of the total domestic footprint. Domestic water stress transfer is most apparent in the outsourcing of water stress from eastern coastal regions to Central and Western regions, with the top interregional supply chain paths mainly associated with the demand of processed rice and tobacco products. China has transformed into a net exporter of water stress in 2017, with water stress exports to developing countries accounting for 54 % of total exports, up from 51 % in 2012. With deepening globalization, trade between China and developing countries has boosted bilateral economic development, while also exacerbating water stress in China. In addition to agricultural cultivation, industrial products such as plastics and steel exported to meet international industries further contribute to water stress in Northern China. Shrinkage and collapse phenomena are the two mechanisms involved in the evolution of pores within food products during dehydration. These phenomena can be mathematically represented by shrinkage and collapse functions, which can be derived from theoretical models of porosity, bulk density, or volume reduction coefficient. In this contribution, these two functions were simplified to capture four extreme scenarios of dehydration, which consist in the combination of total or no shrinkage with total or no collapse. The four simplified equations were used to generate theoretical maps characterized by three distinct zones that are associated with pore evolution. Each of these zones represents a key dehydration situation. By superimposing experimental data of porosity, bulk density, or volume reduction coefficient on these theoretical maps, it is possible to assess dehydration processes, i.e., drying technologies and/or dehydration conditions, in terms of pore formation and evolution over time. These theoretical maps can be constructed for each food product before starting the dehydration processes. Therefore, when the experimental data is available, the suggested mapping approach is a simple, fast, and reliable tool to: (i) assess the performance of a given dehydration process versus specific cases of pore formation, and (ii) compare different dehydration processes in terms of their ability to promote pore formation. This practical tool can be used by the industry and academia to quantitatively evaluate how far a drying technology and/or its dehydration conditions are from the ideal scenario in terms of pore formation. Thermal digestion has emerged as a novel technique for the rapid treatment of solid organic waste (SOW). Dehydration mechanism and fate of nutrients during the thermal digestion of the SOW were explored. A series of experiments were carried out in a specially designed laboratory-scale dehydrator to determine its drying kinetics. The statistical analysis revealed that the diffusion model predicted the dehydration profile most accurately than other models. The effective moisture diffusivity coefficient depended on the temperature and varied from 2.81 × 10 -08 m 2 /s to 8.68 × 10 -08 m 2 /s at the tested temperature range. The activation energy required for complete dehydration was found to be 26.56 kJ/mol. The artificial neural network (ANN) model was found highly efficient (R 2 - 0.983) in predicting the total drying time required for attaining equilibrium moisture content. The total N decreased from 2.2% to 1.81% due to evaporation of ammonical nitrogen, while the availability of P and K was increased from 0.38% to 0.43% and 1.47% to 1.75%, respectively when the temperature was increased from 110 °C to 170 °C. Body hydration is considered one of the most important physiological parameters to measure and one of the most challenging. Current methods to assess hydration are invasive and require costly clinical settings. The bio-impedance analysis offers a noninvasive and inexpensive tool to assess hydration, and it can be designed to be used in wearable health devices. The use of wearable electronics in healthcare applications has received increased attention over the last decade. New, emerging medical devices feature continuous patient monitoring and data collection to provide suitable treatment and preventive actions. In this paper, a model of human skin is developed and simulated to be used as a guide to designing a dehydration monitoring system based on a bio-impedance analysis technique. The study investigates the effect of applying different frequencies on the dielectric parameters of the skin and the resulting measured impedance. Two different interdigitated electrode designs are presented, and a comparison of the measurements is presented. The rectangular IDE is printed and tested on subjects to validate the bio-impedance method and study the interpretation of its results. The proposed design offers a classification criterion that can be used to assess dehydration without the need for a complex mathematical model. Further clinical testing and data are needed to refine and finalize the criteria.

Climate water stress internationally challenges the goal of achieving food, energy, and water security. This challenge is elevated by population and income growth. Increased climate water stress levels reduce water supplies in many river basins and elevate competition for water among sectors. Organized information is needed to guide river basin managers and stakeholders who must plan for a changing climate through innovative water allocation policies, trade-off analysis, vulnerability assessment, capacity adaptation, and infrastructure planning. Several hydroeconomic models have been developed and applied assessing water use in different sectors, counties, cultures, and time periods. However, none to date has presented an optimization framework by which historical water use and economic benefit patterns can be replicated while presenting capacity to adapt to future climate water stresses to inform the design of policies not yet been implemented. This paper's unique contribution is to address this gap by designing and presenting results of a hydroeconomic model for which optimized base conditions exactly match observed data water use and economic welfare for several urban and agricultural uses at several locations in a large European river basin for which water use supports a population of more than 3.2 million. We develop a state-of-the arts empirical dynamic hydroeconomic optimization model to discover land and water use patterns that optimize sustained farm and city income under various levels of climate-water stress. Findings using innovative model calibration methods allow for the discovery of efficient water allocation plans as well as providing insight into marginal behavioral responses to climate water stress and water policies. Results identify that water trade policy under climate water stress provides more economically efficient water use patterns, reallocating water from lower valued uses to higher valued uses such as urban water. The Ebro River Basin in Spain is used as an example to investigate water use adaptation patterns under various levels of climate water stress. DDG is a major source of protein, calcium, phosphorus, and sulfur is arguably the most important byproduct of the bioethanol industry with increasing demand over the past few years. Reducing energy consumption in the DDG production process and energy recovery from DDG is vital for sustainable bioethanol productions. In this paper, a novel direct-contact multi-frequency, multimode, and modulated (MMM) ultrasonic dryer (US) was developed for the first time and has been applied in dehydration of wet distillers' grain (WDG). Ultrasonic drying (US) was combined with a convective airflow (HA) at different temperatures of 25 (room temperature), 50 and 70 °C to evaluate the impact of US, HA, and US + HA on drying kinetics, activation energy, chemical compositions, microstructure, and color of DDG. Semi-empirical kinetic models were developed and evaluating drying performances showed that the application of ultrasound significantly enhanced the drying rate and decreased the drying time (by 46%), especially at low drying temperatures. The activation energy for moisture removal in the presence of ultrasound was about 50% of that without ultrasound. The final dried distillers' grains product processed by ultrasonic drying had a brighter color, a higher available protein, a higher digestible protein (the lowest acid detergent insoluble crude protein), and a better surface profile with no compromise on minerals and fiber contents., (Copyright © 2022 The Author(s). Background: Small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) target homologous genomic DNA sequences for cytosine methylation, known as RNA-directed DNA methylation (RdDM), plays an important role in transposon control and regulation of gene expression in plants. Repressor of silencing 1 (ROS1) can negatively regulate the RdDM pathway., Results: In this paper, we investigated the molecular mechanisms by which an upstream regulator ACD6 in the salicylic acid (SA) defense pathway, an ABA pathway-related gene ACO3, and GSTF14, an endogenous gene of the glutathione S-transferase superfamily, were induced by various abiotic stresses. The results demonstrated that abiotic stresses, including water deficit, cold, and salt stresses, induced demethylation of the repeats in the promoters of ACD6, ACO3, and GSTF14 and transcriptionally activated their expression. Furthermore, our results revealed that ROS1-mediated DNA demethylation plays an important role in the process of transcriptional activation of ACD6 and GSTF14 when Arabidopsis plants are subjected to cold stress., Conclusions: This study revealed that ROS1 plays an important role in the molecular mechanisms associated with genes involved in defense pathways in response to abiotic stresses., (© 2022. With the ongoing advances in sensor technology and miniaturization of electronic chips, more applications are researched and developed for wearable devices. Hydration monitoring is among the problems that have been recently researched. Athletes, battlefield soldiers, workers in extreme weather conditions, people with adipsia who have no sensation of thirst, and elderly people who lost their ability to talk are among the main target users for this application. In this paper, we address the use of machine learning for hydration monitoring using data from wearable sensors: accelerometer, magnetometer, gyroscope, galvanic skin response sensor, photoplethysmography sensor, temperature, and barometric pressure sensor. These data, together with new features constructed to reflect the activity level, were integrated with personal features to predict the last drinking time of a person and alert the user when it exceeds a certain threshold. The results of applying different models are compared for model selection for on-device deployment optimization. The extra trees model achieved the least error for predicting unseen data; random forest came next with less training time, then the deep neural network with a small model size, which is preferred for wearable devices with limited memory. Embedded on-device testing is still needed to emphasize the results and test for power consumption.

Background: 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) is a high value-added platform compound which can be obtained by dehydration of hexose under acidic conditions., Objective: In this paper, a novel impregnation strategy for the molecular sieves (ZSM-5) as carrier and phosphotungstic acid (TPA) as active ingredient is proposed, the influence of the fructose dehydration process were studied and eco-friendliness, low-cost 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) was successfully obtained., Method: The structure surface area, pore size, acidity and microstructure of solid acid catalysts were investigated by XRD, BET, NH3-TPD and SEM. The influences of reaction temperature, reaction time, catalyst dosage on the yield of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HFM) were investigated., Results: The results showed that TPA/ZSM-5 (mass ratio 20:10) has good dispersion and catalytic activity, fructose dosage 5 g, reaction temperature 140 °C, reaction time 2 h, catalyst dosage 0.5 g, and the yield of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural was 80.75% and after five times use the yield of 5-HMF remained above 75%., Conclusion: The novel solid acid TPA/ZSM-5 catalyst exhibited good catalytic activity and stability for the fructose dehydration to produce 5-HMF.

Objective: To systematically examine the effect of dehydration on health outcomes, identify associated financial costs and consider impacts on cognitive performance in older adults., Design: A systematic review of English-language articles via OVID using MEDLINE, PsychINFO, EMBASE, and others, to March 2018. Included studies examined the relationship between hydration status and health, care costs or cognitive outcome., Setting: Cross sectional and cohort data from studies reporting on dehydration in older adults., Participants: Adults aged 60 years and older., Measurements: Independent quality ratings were assessed for all extracted articles., Results: Of 1684 articles screened, 18 papers (N = 33,707) met inclusion criteria. Participants were recruited from hospital settings, medical long-term care centres and the community dwelling population. Data were synthesised using a narrative summary. Mortality rates were higher in dehydrated patients. Furthermore, health outcomes, including frailty, bradyarrhythmia, transient ischemic attacks, oral health and surgery recovery are linked to and worsened by dehydration. Length of hospital stay, either as a principal or secondary diagnosis, is greater in those with dehydration, compared to those who are euhydrated. Finally, neurocognitive functioning may be impacted by dehydration. There are issues with study design, inconsistency in hydration status measurement and different measures used for outcome assessment., Conclusion: Dehydration in older people is associated with increased mortality, poorer course of illness and increased costs for health services. In addition, there is some, but sparse evidence that dehydration in older people is linked to poorer cognitive performance. Riparian areas in the Cantabrian Atlantic ecoregion (northwest Portugal) play a key role in soil formation and conservation, regulation of nutrient and water cycle, creation of landscape aesthetic value and the preservation of biodiversity. The maintenance of their ecological integrity is crucial given the ever increase in multiple anthropogenic (water demand and agriculture) and climatic pressures (droughts and extreme events). We developed a transferable remote sensing approach, taking advantage of the latest freely available technologies (Sentinel-2 and Copernicus Land products), to detect intra-annual and inter-annual changes in riparian vegetation productivity at the river basin scale related to water stress. This study has used the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) to investigate riparian vegetation productivity dynamics on three different vegetation types (coniferous, broadleaved and grassland) over the past 5 years (2015-2019). Our results indicated that inter-annual seasonality differed between drier (2017) and wetter (2016) years. We found that intra-annual dynamics of NDVI were influenced by the longitudinal river zonation. Our model ranked first (r 2 m = 0.73) showed that the productivity of riparian vegetation during the dry season was positively influenced by annual rainfall and by the type of riparian vegetation. The emergent long lags between climatic variation and riparian plant productivity provides opportunities to forecast early warnings of climatically-driven impacts. In addition, the different average productivity levels among vegetation types should be considered when assessing climatic impacts on riparian vegetation. Justification: The IAP last published the guidelines "Comprehensive Management of Diarrhea" in 2006 and a review in 2016. The WHO in 2002 and the Government of India in 2004 recommended low osmolarity rehydration solution (LORS) as the universal rehydration solution for all ages and all forms of dehydration. However, the use of LORS in India continues to be unacceptably low at 51%, although awareness about ORS has increased from a mere 14% in 2005 to 69% in 2015. Availability of different compositions of ORS and brands in market added to the confusion., Process: The Indian Academy of Pediatrics constituted a panel of experts from the fields of pediatrics, pediatric gastroenterology and nutrition to update on management of dehydration in children with particular reference to LORS and issue a current practice guideline. The committee met twice at CIAP HQ to review all published literature on the aspect. Brief presentations were made, followed by discussions. The draft paper was circulated by email. All relevant inputs and suggestions were incorporated to arrive at a consensus on this practice guideline., Objectives: To summarize latest literature on ORT and empower pediatricians, particularly those practicing in rural areas, on management of dehydration by augmenting LORS use., Recommendations: It was stressed that advantages of LORS far out-weigh its limitations. Increased use of LORS can only be achieved by promoting better awareness among public and health-care providers across all systems of medicine. LORS can also be useful in managing dehydration in non-diarrheal illness. More research is required to modify ORS further to make it safe and effective in neonates, severe acute malnutrition, renal failure, cardiac and other co-morbidities. There is an urgent need to discourage production and marketing all forms of ORS not in conformity with WHO approved LORS, under a slogan "One India, one ORS".

We hypothesize that threat of dehydration provided selection pressure for the evolutionary emergence and persistence of the anterior communicating artery (ACoA - the inter-arterial connection that completes the Circle of Willis) in early amniotes. The ACoA is a hemodynamically insignificant artery, but, as we argue in this paper, its privileged position outside the blood-brain barrier gives it a crucial sensing function for the osmolarity of the blood against the background of the rest of the brain, which efficiently protects itself from dehydration. Till now, the questions of why the ACoA evolved, and what its physiological function is, have remained unsatisfactorily answered. The traditional view-that the ACoA serves as a collateral source of vascularization in case of arterial stenosis-is anthropocentric, and not in accordance with principles of natural selection that apply more generally. Diseases underlying arterial stenosis are associated with aging and the human lifestyle, so this cannot explain why the ACoA formed hundreds of millions of years ago and persisted in amniotes to this day. The peculiar hemodynamic properties of the ACoA could be selected traits that allowed for more efficient forebrain detection of dehydration and complex behavioral responses to water loss, a major advantage in the survival of early amniotes. The annual killifish, Austrofundulus limnaeus , survives in ephemeral ponds in the coastal deserts of Venezuela. Persistence through the dry season is dependent on drought-resistant eggs embedded in the pond sediments during the rainy season. The ability of these embryos to enter drastic metabolic dormancy (diapause) during normal development enables A. limnaeus to survive conditions lethal to most other aquatic vertebrates; critical to the survival of the species is the ability of embryos to survive months and perhaps years without access to liquid water. Little is known about the molecular mechanisms that aid in survival of the dry season. This study aims to gain insight into the mechanisms facilitating survival of dehydration stress due to aerial exposure by examining metabolite profiles of dormant and developing embryos. There is strong evidence for unique metabolic profiles based on developmental stage and length of aerial exposure. Actively developing embryos exhibit more robust changes; however, dormant embryos respond in an active manner and significantly alter their metabolic profile. A number of metabolites accumulate in aerial-exposed embryos that may play an important role in survival, including the identification of known antioxidants and neuroprotectants. In addition, a number of unique metabolites not yet discussed in the dehydration literature are identified, such as lanthionine and 2-hydroxyglutarate. Despite high oxygen availability, embryos accumulate the anaerobic end product lactate. This paper offers an overview of the metabolic changes occurring that may support embryonic survival during dehydration stress due to aerial incubation, which can be functionally tested using genetic and pharmacological approaches.
