Minnesota has the largest Somali diaspora in the world. Uniquely, the Minnesotan Somali diaspora utilizes traditional healing practices along with Western medicine. Therefore, medical providers who regularly interact with Somali patients must be aware of traditional healing practices. A scoping review inclusive of three databases (Embase Classic + Embase, Ovid MEDLINE, PsychINFO) was conducted. Fifty-eight studies met established criteria. Traditional medicine is performed with conventional medicine. Illnesses are acknowledged to be caused by a malfunctioning body, evil eye, and/or zar (possession). Examples of the utilization of dawo dhaqmeed (traditional practices) included ilko dacowo (dental enucleation), khat (catha edulis), guboow (use of a fire-heated object), cupping, xoq (scraping), xidhayn (female genital mutilation), duugto (massage), baan (nutrition), herbs, caano geel (camel milk), Qur'anic healing, prayer, zam zam (holy water), tahliil liquid (blessed water), and amulets. Practices ranged from benign to harmful. Identifying Somali traditional healing practices is the first step in understanding the health of the Somali community in Minnesota., (© 2021. This article poses a response to one argument supporting the force feeding of political prisoners. This argument assumes that prisoners have moral autonomy and thus cannot be force fed in the early stages of their hunger strike. However, as their fasting progresses, their cognitive competence declines, and they are no longer autonomous. Since they are no longer autonomous, force feeding becomes justified. This article questions the recurrent citation of a paper in empirical support of the claim that hunger strike causes mental disorders or cognitive impairments. The paper, written by Daniel Fessler, partially relies on the Minnesota Starvation Experiment conducted in 1944 to 1945 for scientific support. Using widely accepted criteria for assessing the ethical acceptability of clinical research, we argue that the Minnesota Starvation Experiment had significant scientific shortcomings and is a case of unethical research. From this, we question the appropriateness of citing the Minnesota Starvation Experiment and consequently Fessler's paper. If Citing Fessler's paper becomes problematic, this particular argument for the force feeding of prisoners loses much of its strength., (© 2021. Journal of Bioethical Inquiry Pty Ltd.)

Purpose The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) Comprehensive Core Set for Vocational Rehabilitation (CSVR) is a shortlist of functioning domains developed for use with people of working age that experience limitation in their work-related functional capacity. Functional capacity can be measured by, for example, Spinal Function Sort pictorial questionnaire and Functional Capacity Evaluation tests such as the: Complete Minnesota Dexterity Test, grip strength test, pushing, pulling, progressive iso-inertial lifting and carrying. However, these tests have not yet been linked to the CSVR. The objective of this study was to evaluate the extent to which the Spinal Function Sort and Functional Capacity Evaluation tests could be mapped to the ICF categories of the CSVR. Methods Two raters independently performed the linking of the Spinal Function Sort and the Functional Capacity Evaluation related tests to the CSVR according to established ICF linking rules. If an item could not accurately be linked to a CSVR category, the item was linked to the most fitting ICF category. Disagreements were resolved in a consensus meeting. Interrater agreement between raters was expressed in percentage agreement. Results The Spinal Function Sort and Functional Capacity Evaluation tests described a total of 39 unique ICF categories, out of which only six (15%) came from the CSVR. Interrater agreement ranged between 17 and 91%. Conclusions The study found six categories including vestibular functions, muscle power functions, writing, lifting and carrying objects, fine hand use and hand and arm use within the CSVR using the Spinal Function Sort and The Complete Minnesota Dexterity Test. With the rest of the items, the CSVR was considered too broad.

The mere threat of predation may incite behavioral changes in prey that lead to community-wide impacts on productivity, biodiversity, and nutrient cycling. The paucity of experimental manipulations, however, has contributed to controversy over the strength of this pathway in wide-ranging vertebrate systems. We investigated whether simulated gray wolf (Canis lupus) presence can induce behaviorally-mediated trophic cascades, specifically, whether the 'fear' of wolf olfactory cues alone can change deer foraging behavior in ways that affect plants and soils. Wolves were recently removed from the Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve (Minnesota, USA), such that consumptively mediated predator effects were negligible. At 32 experimental plots, we crossed two nested treatments: wolf urine application and herbivore exclosures. We deployed camera traps to quantify how white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) adjusted their spatiotemporal habitat use, foraging, and vigilance in response to wolf cues and how these behavioral changes affected plant productivity, plant communities, and soil nutrients. Weekly applications of wolf urine significantly altered deer behavior, but deer responses did not cascade to affect plant or soil properties. Deer substantially reduced crepuscular activity at wolf-simulated sites compared to control locations. As wolves in this area predominantly hunted during mornings and evenings, this response potentially allows deer to maximize landscape use by accessing dangerous areas when temporal threat is low. Our experiment suggests that prey may be sensitive to 'dynamic' predation risk that is structured across both space and time and, consequentially, prey use of risky areas during safe times may attenuate behaviorally-mediated trophic cascades at the predator-prey interface.

This paper examines age of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) identification and related factors in a diverse urban sample, focusing on ASD identification in the East African Somali community. The overall average age of initial ASD identification was 4.8 years. Somali children received an initial clinical diagnosis of Autistic Disorder later than White children, and Somali children diagnosed with ASD born outside of Minnesota (MN) received their first comprehensive evaluation later than Somali children diagnosed with ASD born in MN. Most children had noted developmental concerns before age 3, with no significant racial or ethnic differences in those concerns. The current study contributes to a limited number of studies on early ASD identification in culturally and linguistically diverse populations.

Chelation therapy is often used to treat mercury poisoning. Public health personnel are often asked about mercury toxicity and its treatment. This paper provides a public health department response to use of a mercury-containing cosmetic in Minnesota, a perspective on two unpublished cases of chelation treatment for postulated mercury toxicity, and comments on the use of a nonsystemic treatment for removal of mercury following the Iraqi seed coat poisoning incident. Physicians should evaluate sources of exposure, biomarkers, and risks and benefits before recommending chelation therapy for their patients. Potential risks to chelation therapy and its little understood subtle or latent effects are areas of public health concern.

The establishment of several large area monitoring networks over the past few decades has led to increased research into ways to spatially balance sample locations across the landscape. Many of these methods are well documented and have been used in the past with great success. In this paper, we present a method using geographic information systems (GIS) and fractals to create a sampling frame, superimpose a tessellation and draw a sample. We present a case study that illustrates the technique and compares results to those from other methods using data from Voyageurs National Park in Minnesota. Our method compares favorably with results from a popular plot selection method, Generalized Random Tessellation Stratified Design, and offers several additional advantages, including ease of implementation, intuitive appeal, and the ability to maintain spatial balance by adding new plots in the event of an inaccessible plot encountered in the field.

Section 303(d) of the Clean Water Act requires States and Tribes to list waters not meeting water quality standards. A total maximum daily load must be prepared for waters identified as impaired with respect to water quality standards. Historically, the management of pollution in Minnesota has been focused on point-source regulation. Regulatory effort in Minnesota has improved water quality over the last three decades. Non-point source pollution has become the largest driver of conventional 303(d) listings in the 21st century. Conventional pollutants, i.e., organic, sediment and nutrient imbalances can be identified with poor land use management practices. However, the cause and effect relationship can be elusive because of natural watershed-system influences that vary with scale. Elucidation is complex because the current water quality standards in Minnesota were designed to work best with water quality permits to control point sources of pollution. This paper presents a sentinel watershed-systems approach (SWSA) to the monitoring and assessment of Minnesota waterbodies. SWSA integrates physical, chemical, and biological data over space and time using advanced technologies at selected small watersheds across Minnesota to potentially improve understanding of natural and anthropogenic watershed processes and the management of point and non-point sources of pollution. Long-term, state-of-the-art monitoring and assessment is needed to advance and improve water quality standards. Advanced water quality or ecologically-based standards that integrate physical, chemical, and biological numeric criteria offer the potential to better understand, manage, protect, and restore Minnesota's waterbodies.

Project Northland was a randomized community trial to prevent or delay alcohol use among adolescents. Students in the intervention communities were exposed to a multi-component prevention program in early adolescence and high school. This paper examines the impact of Project Northland on the trajectories of four scales of the adolescent form of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI-A). Students in the intervention communities demonstrated lower rates of growth of family problems and alcohol/drug use proneness than students in the delayed-program control communities. The results were more robust for baseline non-drinkers. EDITORS' STRATEGIC IMPLICATIONS: This experimental study extends the scope of the impact of Project Northland, already recognized as a model substance abuse prevention program by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The results suggest that focused prevention programs have the potential to impact young adolescents' lives more broadly. Replication and further examination of the mechanisms by which risk factors and outcomes are modified is necessary, but school administrators and public health officials could learn from this promising program and evaluation.

Objective: A promising means of screening for depression among high-risk perinatal women involves interactive voice response (IVR) technology in which patients self-enter data into a database using a touch tone telephone. Our aim was to test the feasibility of using IVR to screen for depression among low-income, urban pregnant patients and to solicit their preferences for treatment., Methods: The study population included a convenience sample of English-speaking pregnant patients awaiting routine prenatal visits in an urban obstetric clinic. Consenting subjects used a phone in a private clinic room to complete an IVR version of the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). Patients scoring in the "not depressed" range were branched to a closing message while those with mild to severe depressive symptoms were branched to additional automated questions about their treatment preferences., Results: All 54 participants who consented to the study were able to complete the IVR phone session. More than 90% expressed willingness to complete IVR interviews as part of routine prenatal and postpartum care. Sixteen out of 54 participants (29.6%) scored in the moderate to severe range for depressive symptoms (EPDS >/= 12) which was consistent with a prior study in the same population using a validated paper-pencil screen. Only 12 out of 21 (57%) depressed subjects indicated a desire to speak with a health care provider about how they are feeling. The majority of these depressed subjects preferred to speak with a social worker about housing or financial problems (92%) or an obstetrician or midwife (83%), while a minority (42%) wanted to speak with a mental health professional., Conclusions: This pilot study suggests that it is feasible to use an automated phone interview to screen for depression in low-income, urban pregnant women.

In the spring of 1996, the Minnesota Health Partnership (MHP) received a demonstration grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Workers Compensation Health Initiative to pilot a model of health care that was designed to combine the best practices of general health and workers' compensation medical care. This paper outlines the genesis of the MHP, and the relationship of its Coordinated Health Care and Disability Prevention model to traditional managed care and 24-h care models. In order to effectively implement disability prevention principles within a primary care clinical setting, it is essential to increase health care provider awareness that the disability relating to a specific impairment can be positively impacted by specific clinical strategies. The basis and specifics of these strategies are also discussed. Plans for the evaluation of this model will also be described.

The Minnesota Cancer Pain Project (MCPP) is a community-based research project to test various innovative education strategies for improving cancer pain management (CPM) in Minnesota. The main hypothesis is that community-based, multidisciplinary and integrated education programs can improve CPM and change knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors regarding CPM in cancer patients, their families, and community physicians and nurses. The specific aim of the MCPP is to demonstrate effective methods to improve CPM in communities. The MCPP design is a randomized trial with before- and after-intervention assessments of cancer pain and CPM knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors among cancer patients and their families, physicians, and nurses. The unit of randomization and study is the community, with six Minnesota communities participating in the MCPP. This paper describes the hypotheses, design, methods, and education strategies of the MCPP. Baseline data from the participating communities and the cancer patient sample are reported.
