Background: Metabolic and bariatric surgery is a safe and effective treatment strategy for severe childhood obesity, affecting 10% of US adolescents., Objectives: This prospective observational study addresses knowledge gaps related to changes in weight, cardiometabolic risk, and weight-related quality of life (WRQOL) in adolescents 10 years after laparoscopic adjustable gastric band (LAGB) insertion., Setting: Five Teen-Longitudinal Assessment of Bariatric Surgery (Teen-LABS) US centers., Methods: Anthropometric, micronutrient, cardiometabolic risk, and WRQOL data were collected on 274 adolescents undergoing metabolic and bariatric surgery, of which 14 participants underwent LAGB insertion (2008-2011). Descriptive analyses compared outcomes from baseline to 10 years., Results: Participants were mostly female (86%), White (71%), with a median age of 18.5 years and preoperative median BMI of 49. Baseline prevalence of type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia were 1 of 14 (7%), 8 of 14 (57%), and 8 of 13 (62%), respectively, versus 10-year prevalence of 1 of 8 (13%), 4 of 10 (40%), and 3 of 9 (33%), respectively. Two participants underwent LAGB removal (years 2 and 3), whereas two converted from LAGB to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (years 2 and 6). Following initial BMI reduction (-10%) at year 1, 10-year median BMI in the LAGB retention group was 51, representing a 9.2% increase versus baseline. Micronutrient abnormalities and WRQOL remained similar between baseline and 10 years. One participant (1 of 14) withdrew from the study at year 7., Conclusions: Long-term follow-up of this cohort reveals that LAGB had minimal impact on BMI, cardiometabolic risk factors, and WRQOL among adolescents. Donepezil (DPZ) is used to treat Alzheimer's disease by increasing acetylcholine in the brain, necessitating precise analytical methods for its evaluation. This study aims to develop and validate a new turn-off fluorescence sensing method for quantifying DPZ, enhancing its evaluation in pharmaceutical formulations, quality control laboratories, and biological fluids. By leveraging the fluorescence-quenching interplay between DPZ and tetrabromofluorescein, the assay parameters were fine-tuned to enhance the development of an ion-associated complex. The developed method demonstrated a measurement range from 40.0 to 800.0 ng/mL, with detection and quantification limits of 12.6 ng/mL and 38.0 ng/mL, respectively. However, the successful application of the method to commercial DPZ tablets and plasma samples confirmed its effectiveness for both quality control labs and clinical research settings. It ensured accurate content uniformity and high precision, making it ideal for routine DPZ monitoring. In contrast to previous methods, this approach emphasizes environmental sustainability, evaluated using advanced tools like the Eco score scale, AGREE, RGB12, and BAGI. With recent technical advances, many cognitive and sensory tasks have been adapted for smartphone testing. This study aimed to assess the criterion validity of a subset of self-administered, open-source app-based cognitive and sensory tasks by comparing test performance to lab-based alternatives. An in-person baseline was completed by 43 participants (aged 21 to 82) from the larger Labs without Walls project (Brady et al., 2023) to compare the self-administered, app-based tasks with researcher-administered equivalents. 4 preset tasks sourced from Apple's ResearchKit (Spatial Memory, Trail Making Test, Stroop Test, and dBHL Tone Audiometry) and 1 custom-built task (Ishihara Color Deficiency Test) were compared. All tasks except the Spatial Memory task demonstrated high comparability to the researcher-administered version. Specifically, the Trail Making Tests were strongly correlated (.77 and .78 for parts A and B, respectively), Stroop correlations ranged from .77 to .89 and the Ishihara tasks were moderately correlated (r = .69). ICCs for the Audiometry task ranged from .56 to .96 (Moderate to Excellent) with 83% sensitivity and 100% specificity. Bland-Altman plots revealed a mean bias between -5.35 to 9.67 dB for each ear and frequency with an overall bias of 3.02 and 1.98 for the left and right ears, respectively, within the minimum testing interval. Furthermore, all app-based tasks were significantly correlated with age. These results offer preliminary evidence of the validity of four open-source cognitive and sensory tasks with implications for effective remote testing in non-lab settings., Competing Interests: Declarations. This review article provides a thorough examination of an interaction between linear alkylbenzenes (LABs) and ecosystems. The review covers various aspects of LABs' impact on ecosystems, focusing on detection and treatment strategies to mitigate ecological consequences. It delves into LABs' role as molecular markers for sewage pollution, their physicochemical properties contributing to persistence, and their effects on aquatic and terrestrial organisms, including disruptions to endocrine systems. The diverse sources of LABs, including domestic wastewater and industrial effluents, are explored, along with their ratios in different matrices for assessing contamination origins. Biodegradation pathways of LABs, both aerobic and anaerobic, are scrutinized, considering their interaction with microbes. Distribution patterns in aquatic environments are discussed, encompassing sediment, water, sewage, and soils. An investigation is conducted on the relationship between LABs and total organic carbon (TOC) as a means of evaluating sewage pollution. Introduction: Multiple studies have indicated that isolated abnormal laboratory results necessitate obtaining abdominal computed tomography (CT) for pediatric patients with blunt abdominal trauma (BAT), regardless of the normal abdominal examination. This study aims to identify the predictors of intra-abdominal injury (IAI) and the role of laboratory tests in CT imaging among pediatric BAT patients., Methods: This is a retrospective review at a Level II pediatric trauma center (2018-2022). Children (younger than 18 years) who presented with BAT and received abdominal CT imaging were included. Outcomes were rates of IAI and interventions. Multivariable regression analysis was performed., Results: Over 5 years, 483 patients met the inclusion criteria. The mean age was 13 years, 58.2% were male, and the median Glasgow Coma Scale was 15. Overall, 19.3% had abdominal pain; 6.2%, postinjury emesis; 26.1%, abdominal tenderness; and 10.6%, pelvic tenderness. On initial imaging, 7.0% had a positive focused assessment with sonography in trauma examination, and 7.2% had an abnormal plain x-ray. On initial laboratory testing, 7.9% had abnormal serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST), 3.1% had abnormal hematocrit, 1.2% had abnormal urine analysis, and 0.8% had abnormal lipase. Seventeen percent had at least one IAI, of which 17% underwent intervention. Multivariable regression analysis identified abdominal tenderness, abnormal plain x-ray, positive focused assessment with sonography in trauma, blood transfusion requirements, and abnormal AST as independent predictors of IAI on abdominal CT imaging. Moreover, among patients with IAI, only 37.3% had abnormal laboratory results, and all had at least one of the predictors of IAI (in addition to or other than abnormal AST). Among patients with abnormal laboratory results (n = 57), nine patients had none of the predictors of IAI, out of which none were found to have IAI on abdominal CT., Conclusion: More than 80% of all abdominal CT imaging had negative results. Background: As clinical laboratories struggle to maintain their financial footing and as patients face mounting out-of-pocket expenses for diagnostic testing, being able to perform financial analysis of laboratory stewardship efforts has become an increasingly important skill., Content: Understanding the revenue cycle as it relates to diagnostic testing is fundamental to selecting, designing, implementing, and evaluating laboratory stewardship interventions for maximum financial return. Leveraging the data and processes driving the revenue cycle can inform informatics-based interventions (such as clinical decision support) and allow deliberate financial analyses of stewardship-focused projects. Meat analogs or meat alternatives mimic conventional meat by using non-meat ingredients. There are several reasons for the rising interest in meat alternatives, e.g., health-consciousness, environmental concerns, and the growing demand for sustainable diets. Factors like low-calorie foods, low-fat, efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and flexitarian lifestyles are also contributing to this change (conventional to meat analogs). Numerous meat substitutes are presently being launched in alternative meat markets. Plant-based meat, restructured meat, cultured meat, hybrid cultured meat, and insect protein-based meat are prevalent among meat alternatives. The scope of meat alternatives, including plant-based meat, cultured meat, restructured meat, and insect-based protein products, is expanding due to advances in food technology. Innovation in food technology plays a crucial role in sustainable food production. Still, there are some challenges to the market of meat alternatives, including consumer acceptance, the appearance of meat alternatives, and the cost of production. Innovative approaches, such as advanced technologies and awareness of meat alternatives to the meat consumer, are required to deal with these challenges. This review briefly examines the technological advances, regulatory requirements, pros and cons, and market trends of meat alternatives. The finding of this review highlights the importance of meat alternatives as a sustainable resource of food. Moreover, meat alternatives can fulfill the increasing demand for meat and also decrease the environmental impact. Abstract: This research evaluates the effectiveness of a large specialized cardiac catheterization laboratory shielding device (SCCLSD) placed perpendicular to the patient compared to traditional shielding methods in reducing occupational exposure to scattered x rays, contributing to the ongoing enhancement of radiation safety in the cardiac catheterization laboratory (CCL) setting. An experimental setup involving an anthropomorphic phantom on the catheterization table simulated radiation scatter from a patient. Measurements were taken systematically at various grid points and heights in the CCL using a Fluke 451P ion chamber while mimicking a real interventional scenario. In-air peak exposure rates were analyzed at head, chest, and waist heights in the anteroposterior (AP) position. Results demonstrated that the SCCLSD provided a superior radiation shadow and effective whole-body radiation exposure reduction compared to conventional shielding devices. Considering that conventional shielding requires staff to wear lead aprons, an effective dose equivalent correction factor was applied for exposure measurements without the SCCLSD. Even after the correction factor, the SCCLSD continued outperforming lead aprons and offered whole-body protection, including the head and arms, which is typically neglected with conventional shielding. The SCCLSD also reduces exposure to the eyes, aligning with lower occupational exposure recommendations from ICRP and NCRP. However, proper CCL staff positioning is important in maximizing the effectiveness of the SCCLSD. Background: Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) is an important marker for ovarian reserve and response to fertility treatments. However, interassay variability exists due to the lack of a standardized method. This study evaluates the performance of the new Siemens Healthineers Atellica IM AMH assay against established assays (Beckman DxI 600 Access, Roche cobas Elecsys® e801, and Ansh Labs AMH ELISA)., Methods: We measured AMH concentrations in 120 residual serum samples from patients presenting for routine AMH testing using all four assays. Passing-Bablok regression and Bland-Altman method were used for data analysis., Results: The Siemens Healthineers Atellica IM assay demonstrated strong correlation with Beckman DxI (slope: 1.07, R 2 : 0.9881) but showed a minimal positive bias. Conversely, the Roche cobas Elecsys® e801 assay exhibited a negative bias compared to Beckman DxI (slope: 0.74, R 2 : 0.9696), while the Ansh Labs assay demonstrated a significant positive bias with increasing variability at higher AMH concentrations., Conclusion: Overall, the Siemens Healthineers Atellica IM assay shows promise as an alternative method for AMH measurement, demonstrating good correlation with established assays. Background: The intrapartum period is critical for reducing maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. The WHO's Safe Childbirth Checklist (SCC) was designed as a reminder of the most critical, evidence-based practices (EBPs) to improve quality care and reduce preventable complications and deaths., Objective: To assess the impact of SCC on birth attendant behavior and maternal and newborn health outcomes., Search Strategy: A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed searching across five databases from 2009 to 2023., Selection Criteria: We included randomized controlled trials, quasi-experimental studies, and pre/post studies., Data Analysis: A meta-analysis yielded a pooled estimate of relative risk (RR) for adherence to and effectiveness of the SCC., Main Results: Of 1070 articles identified, 16 were included. Use of the SCC increased adherence to EBPs by 65% (RR 1.65; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.34-2.02). The behaviors that improved the most were danger sign counseling (RR 12.37; 95% CI 1.95-78.52; P = 0.008) and pre-eclampsia management (RR 3.43; 95% CI 1.33-8.88; P = 0.011). There was moderate evidence for stillbirth reduction (RR 0.89; 95% CI 0.80-0.99; P = 0.034)., Conclusion: There is moderate evidence demonstrating the effectiveness of the SCC in reducing stillbirths and improving adherence to EBPs., (© 2025 The Author(s). Background: Bacterial identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing is an important step in timely therapeutic decisions for canine superficial bacterial folliculitis (SBF), commonly caused by Staphylococcus pseudintermedius. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) offers the appeal of potentially expedited results with complete detection of bacterial organisms and associated resistance genes compared to culture. Limited studies exist comparing the two methodologies for clinical samples., Hypothesis/objectives: To compare and contrast genotypic and phenotypic methods for bacterial identification and antimicrobial susceptibility from cases of canine SBF., Animals: Twenty-four client-owned dogs with lesions consistent with SBF were enrolled., Materials and Methods: A sterile culturette swab was used to sample dogs with SBF lesions. The swab was rinsed in 0.9 mL of sterile phosphate-buffered saline and vortexed to create a homogenous solution. Two swabs for NGS laboratories (Labs) and one swab for culture (Culture Lab) were randomly sampled from this solution and submitted for bacterial identification and antimicrobial susceptibility., Results: No statistical difference regarding turnaround time for NGS Labs compared to Culture Lab was found. NGS Lab 1 identified more organisms than NGS Lab 2 and Culture Lab, which were both statistically significant. There was no statistical difference in detection frequency for Staphylococcus spp. among all laboratories. The expansion of prenatal genetic screening and diagnosis warrants the evaluation of approved postnatal therapies that may be safely and feasibly translated to prenatal administration to a fetus affected by monogenic disease. For lysosomal storage diseases (LSDs), enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) often represents the main therapeutic approach. In utero enzyme replacement therapy (IUERT) has several potential benefits compared to postnatal therapy, such as: (1) delivering enzyme before the onset of irreversible organ damage; (2) developing tolerance toward the recombinant enzyme; and (3) targeting the central nervous system through a more permeable blood-brain barrier. In this review, we examine the general and disease-specific rationale for IUERT, and provide an overview of the main elements of our current clinical trial for the prenatal treatment of early-onset lysosomal storage diseases. Background: Etrasimod is an oral, once-daily (q.d.), selective sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) 1,4,5 receptor modulator for the treatment of moderately to severely active ulcerative colitis (UC). Unlike the S1P receptor modulator ozanimod, etrasimod does not have a molecular structure to inhibit monoamine oxidase (MAO). Coadministration of drugs that inhibit MAO with opioids and antidepressants may increase the risk of adverse events (AEs)., Aims: This post hoc analysis evaluated the incidence of AEs potentially related to serotonin syndrome in patients taking etrasimod and concomitant opioids or antidepressants in the Phase 3 ELEVATE UC 52 and ELEVATE UC 12 trials., Methods: Safety data pooled from both trials were analysed in subgroups of patients receiving etrasimod 2 mg q.d. (up to 52 weeks of exposure) with/without concomitant opioids or antidepressants. We report the proportions of patients who had ≥ 1 concurrent AE potentially associated with serotonin syndrome, including hypertension-related events., Results: Among 527 patients receiving etrasimod, 77 (14.6%) and 35 (6.6%) were taking concomitant opioids or antidepressants, respectively. The incidence of AEs potentially related to serotonin syndrome, including hypertension-related AEs, was low (≤ 8.6%) and generally comparable in all subgroups. No reported AEs were serious or led to treatment discontinuation among patients taking these concomitant medications., Conclusions: The incidence of AEs was low and comparable in patients receiving etrasimod with or without concomitant opioids or antidepressants. This analysis further supports the low likelihood of clinically relevant drug-drug interactions between etrasimod and medications commonly prescribed to patients with UC, such as opioids or antidepressants. Psychophysiology, the flagship journal of psychophysiological research, has played a key role in the field for 60 years. For the present study, we conducted a bibliometric analysis assessing the journal's development in terms of performance, authorship trends, and thematic content for this time span. Over the years, Psychophysiology has experienced a consistent increase in manuscript submissions, published articles, and impact factor. Authorship trends showed larger, more diverse author teams, with a growing percentage of female first authors now representing about 50% of submissions and an increase in international collaborations. Thematic content has evolved, shifting from peripheral measures to central nervous system measures like EEG and ERPs while maintaining the journal's long-standing emphasis on methodological advancements. Research topics have expanded from basic stimulus processing to more complex investigations into emotion, cognition, and psychopathology, with growing interdisciplinary integration. In recent years, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has become an alarming threat to global health as notable increase in morbidity and mortality has been ascribed to the emergence of superbugs. The increase in microbial resistance because of harboured or inherited resistomes has been complicated by the lack of new and effective antimicrobial agents, as well as misuse and failure of existing ones. These problems have generated severe and growing public health concern, due to high burden of bacterial infections resulting from scarce financial resources and poor functioning health systems, among others. It is therefore, highly pressing to search for novel and more efficacious alternatives for combating the action of these super bacteria and their infection. The application of metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) with their distinctive physical and chemical attributes appears as promising tools in fighting off these deadly superbugs. The simple, inexpensive and eco-friendly model for enhanced biologically inspired MNPs with exceptional antimicrobial effect and diverse mechanisms of action againsts multiple cell components seems to offer the most promising option and said to have enticed many researchers who now show tremendous interest. This synopsis offers critical discussion on application of MNPs as the foremost intervening strategy to curb the menace posed by the spread of superbugs. Abstract: Mangine, GT, Hines, A, Grazer, J, Esmat, TA, and McLester, J. Can video annotation software with minimal standardization be used as a back-up for a marker-free motion tracking system when monitoring barbell thruster velocity during a repeated circuit? J Strength Cond Res 39(2): 147-155, 2025-This study examined the agreement between a marker-free motion tracking system (PERCH) and a free video annotation software (KINOVEA) for measuring barbell thruster velocity using minimal standardization. For a larger placebo-controlled supplement intervention, 10 men (28.7 ± 8.0 years, 175 ± 8 cm, 91.0 ± 12.0 kg) and 10 women (31.3 ± 5.2 years, 167 ± 4 cm, 70 ± 13 kg) completed a circuit of rowing, 6 barbell thrusters (men: 43.1 kg, women: 29.5 kg), and 3 box jumps for "as many repetitions as possible" (AMRAP) in either 5 or 15 minutes. Barbell velocity (m × second -1 ) was monitored by PERCH from the frontal plane, whereas all sessions were video recorded from the same view and subsequently analyzed by KINOVEA using natural barbell landmarks. Fifty repetitions were randomly and equally drawn from each participant ( n = 1,000 repetitions) across all workout and supplement conditions. Although Wilcoxon signed-rank test revealed no differences (mean difference = 0.03 m × second -1 , p = 0.332), KINOVEA only explained 2.6% of PERCH variance, and Spearman's correlation analysis of Bland-Altman plots suggested that differences between technologies were exacerbated by the magnitude of velocity ( ρ = -0.62, p < 0.001). The reaction with in situ extraction to yield 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from d-fructose (Fru) was investigated using a biphasic system based on a self-consuming deep eutectic solvent (DES) as reaction phase. The significance of choline chloride (ChCl), a cost-effective and safe quaternary ammonium salt, was evident in enhancing HMF yield through fructose dehydration and concurrently suppressing side reactions. The DES system demonstrated fast reactions with high selecivities and recyclability across five cycles. The observed decline in H 4 SiW 12 O 40 activity, primarily due to proton leaching, was successfully restored with the addition of HCl. Furthermore, ChCl exhibited ease of recrystallization in the presence of acetonitrile. This research proposes an environmentally friendlier approach for HMF production through a reusable-biphasic process. The presented reaction system suppresses completely the formation of levulinic and formic acid leading to HMF yields of up to 84 % of selectivities of up to 88 % after 30 minutes at 80 °C. The design of antibody mimetics holds great promise for revolutionizing therapeutic interventions by offering alternatives to conventional antibody therapies. Structure-based computational approaches have emerged as indispensable tools in the rational design of those molecules, enabling the precise manipulation of their structural and functional properties. This review covers the main classes of designed antigen-binding motifs, as well as alternative strategies to develop tailored ones. We discuss the intricacies of different computational protein-protein interaction design strategies, showcased by selected successful cases in the literature. Subsequently, we explore the latest advancements in the computational techniques including the integration of machine and deep learning methodologies into the design framework, which has led to an augmented design pipeline. Many nations are struggling to reduce deforestation, despite having extensive environmental protection laws in place and commitments to international agreements that address the biodiversity and climate crises. We developed a novel framework to quantify the extent to which contemporary deforestation is being captured under national and subnational laws. We then applied this framework to northern Australia as a case study, a development and deforestation hotspot with ecosystems of global significance. First, deforestation may be compliant under all relevant legislation, either through assessment and approval or because of exemptions in the legislation. Second, deforestation may be compliant under at least one relevant law, but not all. Third, there may be no evidence of deforestation assessment or exemption from assessment, despite their apparent requirement, which could mean the deforestation is potentially noncompliant. Finally, deforestation may occur in an area or under circumstances that are beyond the intended scope of any relevant legislation. All deforestation that we analyzed was hypothetically covered by one or more laws. However, 65% of deforestation was potentially noncompliant with at least one law. Because multiple laws could be relevant to a given clearing event, the majority of clearing was still compliant with at least one law, but of these events, only a small proportion was explicitly approved (19%). The remaining were permitted under various exemptions. Of all the legislation we analyzed, most of the exempt clearing occurred under one subnational law and most potentially noncompliant clearing occurred under one national law. Our results showed that even a nation with a suite of mature environmental protection laws is falling well short of achieving international commitments regarding deforestation. Aims: Estimation of post-bariatric surgery weight loss is important for informed clinical decisions, yet existing predictive models lack accuracy and reliability. We assessed the effectiveness of the validated Stratification of Obesity Phenotypes to Optimize Future Therapy (SOPHIA) bariatric weight trajectory prediction tool in our patient population., Materials and Methods: We conducted a retrospective study of 178 adults who underwent bariatric surgery over a 3-year period. Actual weights at baseline and annually over 5 years of follow-up were compared with predicted weights to calculate mean difference and median absolute deviation (MAD)., Results: The study comprised 157 women (88.2%) and 21 men (11.8%) with mean (standard deviation) age of 46.9 (10.6) years and baseline weight of 138.4 (23.5) kg. The bariatric surgical procedures included 148 (83.1%) gastric bypass, 19 (10.7%) sleeve gastrectomy and 11 (6.2%) gastric band operations. The proportion of patients with actual weights within the prediction interquartile range (IQR) was 50.7%, 43.2% and 38.8% at 12, 24 and 60 months, respectively. The mean difference between actual and predicted weight at 60 months was 0.6 (16.7) kg, p = 0.654 (paired t test). The mean MAD at 60 months was 12.9 (95% CI, 11.3-14.4) kg, indicating moderate predictive utility. The predictive accuracy was highest for gastric bypass. Subgroup analysis revealed greater accuracy in patients without diabetes/pre-diabetes, and in nonsmokers., Conclusions: The SOPHIA study tool provides accurate postoperative weight forecasts for some subgroups of patients, but its precision diminishes with time. Background: Ventilator-associated events (VAE) are associated with higher mortality rates. Understanding the risk factors for VAE provides preventive strategies for reducing them. Several studies have been conducted on VAE risk factors. However, the findings were inconsistent., Aim: This scoping review aimed to explore the existing evidence on risk factors of VAEs in intensive care unit (ICU) patients., Study Design: Searches were performed across eight databases including Pubmed, ProQuest, Scopus, ScienceDirect, BMJ, Web of Science, Taylor & Francis and Ebsco from 26 March to 5 April 2024, complemented by backward and forward citation tracking-eligible studies criteria: participants aged 18 years and older reporting on VAE risk factors. The publication must have occurred between 2013 and 2024, be available as full text and be written in English. A total of 19 studies met the inclusion criteria and were analysed., Results: Forty-four risk factors were identified. Decreased level of consciousness, chronic lung diseases, invasive operation, duration of MV, trauma, fluid overload, reintubation, enteral feeding, administration of sedation and stress ulcer prophylaxis were the most frequently reported risk factors for VAE., Conclusions: This review identified several potential risk factors for VAE; some factors have varying results or lack evidence. Purpose: This study aimed to identify trajectories of BMI, obesity-specific health-related quality of life (HR-QoL), and depression trajectories from pre-surgery to 24 months post-bariatric metabolic surgery (BMS), and explore their associations, addressing subgroup differences often hidden in group-level analyses., Method: Patients with severe obesity (n = 529) reported their HR-QoL and depression before undergoing BMS, and at 12 and 24 months post-operation. Latent Class Growth Analysis was used to identify trajectories of BMI, HR-QoL and depression., Results: BMI and HR-QoL improved significantly for all patients from pre-surgery to 24 months post-operation, though some patients deteriorated in their outcomes after 12 months. Three distinct trajectories of BMI were identified: Low (35.4%), Medium (45.5%), and High (19.2%), and of HR-QoL: High (38.4%), Medium (43.4%), and Poor (18.1%). Three trajectories of depression were extracted: Low/none (32.4%), Medium-low (45.3%), and Worsening (22.3%). The association between the trajectories of BMI and depression was significant, but not between the BMI and HR-QoL trajectories. Specifically, the Low BMI trajectory patients were more likely to follow the Worsening depression trajectory and reported poorer preoperative psychological health than the other two BMI trajectories., Conclusion: Patients following the most favourable weight loss trajectory may not manifest psychologically favourable outcomes (i.e., Worsening depression), and preoperative characteristics do not consistently describe post-surgical BMI trajectories. Law and Order: Special Victims Unit (SVU) (1999-present) is a popular primetime drama that spotlights the use of genetic information to solve crimes. Despite the show's heavy reliance on the forensic use of DNA evidence, the role of genetics in defining family and identity arises in complex ways. Many episodes wrestle with social, ethical, and legal questions that reflect assumptions about genetic essentialism and genetic determinism, but counterarguments about the importance of non-biological relationships, social factors, and legal entitlements are given equal or greater weight. For this study, we identified and viewed 38 episodes from SVU's first twenty seasons centered on genetic themes in non-forensic contexts. Two recurring themes emerged: (1) that the role DNA plays is only one factor in a complex web of biological and social considerations that shape our understanding of kinship; and (2) that genetic predispositions to behavioral traits such as mental illness or violence should not be seen as obscuring the responsibility of personal choice. The school built environment is closely related to children's health, and research on this topic is increasing. However, bibliometric analyses seeking to provide a comprehensive understanding of the research landscape and key themes in the field are lacking. This study comprehensively explored the global trends and research hotspots on the associations between school built environment and children's health. We used a scientometric analysis to review the research progress. The temporal distribution of publications, scientific collaborations, research hotspots, research frontiers, and co-citations over the past 30 years were analyzed. The results show that the number of publications in this field rose significantly between 1987 and 2025, with research hotspots focusing on physical activity, performance, behavior, perception, thermal comfort, and indoor air quality. Environmental themes related to children's health fall into four main groups: the built environment related to children's activities, intelligent learning environments, indoor environments and interiors, and natural environments. Health outcomes and measures that reflect physiological, psychological, cognitive, behavioral, and physical factors are discussed. In this study, we investigated age-related changes in clinical laboratory data and their association with mortality in dogs from the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study. By analyzing complete blood count (CBC) and biochemistry data from 2'412 Golden Retrievers over 16,678 visits, we observed significant changes during the first 2 years of life and throughout aging. Based on these observations, we developed a biological aging clock using a LASSO model to predict age based on blood markers, achieving an accuracy of R = 0.78. Although the biological age clock and pace of aging did not significantly improve mortality prediction, a model incorporating all blood biomarkers showed better predictive power for lifetime (C-index = 0.763) and 1-year mortality (AUC = 0.817). This study emphasizes the critical importance of closely monitoring and controlling the sialic acid content in therapeutic glycoproteins, including EPO, interferon-γ, Orencia, Enbrel, and others, as the level of sialylation directly impacts their pharmacokinetics (PK), immunogenicity, potency, and overall clinical performance due to its influence on protein clearance via hepatic asialoglycoprotein receptors (ASGPR). The ASGPR recognizes and binds to glycoproteins exposed to terminal galactose or N-acetylgalactosamine residues, leading to receptor-mediated endocytosis. Recent studies have demonstrated that sialylation of O-linked glycan plays a role in protecting against macrophage galactose lectin (MGL)-mediated clearance. In addition to the impact on serum half-life, sialylation can influence other clinical outcomes, including immunogenicity, potency, and cytotoxicity. Therefore, the level of sialic acid is a critical quality attribute (CQA), and monitoring and regulating sialylation has become a regulatory requirement to ensure desired clinical performance. To achieve consistent levels of sialic acid-to-protein ratio, the time of upstream harvest and conductivity of downstream wash buffers must be tightly regulated based on the sialic acid content. Therefore, the utilization of process analytical technology (PAT) tools for generating real-time or near-real-time sialic acid content is a business-critical requirement. This work demonstrates the utility of an integrated PAT system for near real-time online sialic acid measurements. The system consists of a micro-sequential injection analyzer (µSIA) interfaced with SegFlow and an ultra performance liquid chromatography (UPLC). The fully automated architecture exemplifies the execution of online sampling, automatic sample preparation, and subsequent online UPLC analysis. Extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography has enabled significant reductions in device dimensions but is often limited by capillary force-driven pattern collapse in conventional wet processes. Recent dry-development approaches, while promising, frequently require toxic etchants or specialized equipment, limiting their broader applicability and highlighting the need for more sustainable, cost-effective alternatives. In this study, highly reactive, etchant-free dry-developable EUV photoresists using N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-based metal-ligand complexes, achieving half-saturation at EUV doses of 8.5 or 27 mJ cm -2 , are synthesized. A simple thermal dry development process is employed, utilizing a standard furnace to remove unexposed areas of the photoresist, leading to 80 nm resolution with line-edge roughness (LER) comparable to wet-developed patterns. Moreover, EUV-induced chemical reactions of the NHC metal-ligand complexes are investigated via EUV-photoelectron spectroscopy, near-edge X-ray absorption fine structures, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and density functional theory. It is suggested that the high EUV sensitivity of the NHC metal-ligand complexes is attributed to branching polymerization reactions initiated by secondary electron and photoelectron generation. These EUV-sensitive, dry-developable NHC metal-organic photoresists offer a sustainable and economical alternative to conventional techniques, eliminating the need for toxic and corrosive etchants while achieving high-resolution nanopatterns through simple thermal treatment, thus advancing future nanofabrication technologies., (© 2025 Wiley‐VCH GmbH.)

Tonal short-term memory has been positively associated with both incidentally acquired absolute pitch memory (e.g., for popular songs) and explicitly learned absolute pitch (AP) categories; however, the relationship between these constructs has not been directly tested within the same individuals. The current study investigated how tonal short-term memory relates to both incidentally and intentionally acquired AP. Participants (n = 192) completed a tonal short-term memory task, an incidental AP task, and an AP categorization task. The tonal short-term assessment involved adjusting a starting tone to match a target tone. The incidental AP task involved judging whether excerpts of popular songs were presented in the correct key. The AP categorization task involved associating six pitch chroma categories with arbitrary labels, including a generalization test that used Shepard tones to discourage pitch height cues. We found that all three pitch measures were positively correlated with one another. Critically, however, we found that tonal short-term memory fully mediated the relationship between incidental AP and explicit AP categorization. This finding held even when controlling for musical training and tonal language fluency. Overall, these results suggest that pitch memory is a consistent individual difference measure across different timescales and different measures (e.g., incidental measures, explicit measures). Background: Medical student exposure to role-modeling of high-value care (HVC) behaviors may shape professional identity formation and future HVC practices., Objective: To investigate the frequency and characteristics of HVC role-modeling witnessed by medical students during core clinical rotations., Design: Cross-sectional survey study., Participants: Medical students on clinical rotations at 11 US medical schools., Main Measures: A validated 13-item survey was used to assess medical student perception of cost-conscious role-modeling behaviors or potentially wasteful role-modeling behaviors and modified to include whom demonstrated the behavior (attending vs resident/fellow) and during which clinical rotation the modeling occurred., Key Results: Cost-conscious role-modeling behaviors were observed by medical students sometimes/often 52.9-70.5% (353/667-452/641) of the time across all clinical rotations, except for praising a student for ordering a cost-effective diagnostic work-up which was seen only 25.7% (143/556) of the time. Potentially wasteful role-modeling behaviors were observed sometimes/often 5-14.3% (26/537-87/609) of the time, except simultaneously ordering numerous tests before seeing results of initial screening tests 45.1% (273/605) and repeating tests rather than attempting to obtain recently performed test results 32.2% (194/602). HVC modeling was most often demonstrated by internal medicine attendings 67.7% (65/96) and least frequently by general surgery attendings 47.3% (17/36). Attendings were overall more likely to model HVC compared to residents/fellows., Conclusion: HVC role-modeling, as observed by medical students, is not consistently demonstrated across clinical rotations. Sediment cores were collected from the nearshore to bay mouth region in Daya Bay, aiming to describe the historical patterns of heavy metals deposition in the sediment. During the last 40 years, the heavy metals exhibited significant different deposition behaviors in the sediment, in which As, Zn, Cr were more enriched and contributed to metals pollution in this area. Moreover, heavy metals deposition exhibited completely opposite behaviors from the nearshore to bay mouth region. An increasing of pollution level and ecological risk was observed in the nearshore, whereas a decreasing trend was detected in the bay mouth. Principal component analysis suggested that heavy metals were possibly derived from anthropogenic activities in the nearshore, whereas natural sources were the main sources in bay mouth. Anterior cervical spine surgeries are often complicated by difficulty swallowing due to local postoperative swelling, pain, scarring, and tissue dysfunction. These postoperative events lead to systemic steroid and narcotic use. Local, sustained drug delivery may address these problems, but current materials are unsafe for tight surgical spaces due to high biomaterial swelling, especially upon degradation. To address these shortcomings, a low-swelling, amphiphilic hydrogel system termed DexaPatch is developed containing dexamethasone-poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) microparticles for sustained release upon local implantation in the surgical site. The bulk amphiphilic hydrogel, comprised of 4-arm poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-maleimide macromer cross-linked with triblock dithiolated PEG-poly(propylene glycol)-PEG (poloxamer a.k.a. Pluronic), achieves consistent and tunable mechanical and low-swelling properties. Dexamethasone is released in a burst, followed by a sustained release over 40 days, similar to the release from microparticles alone. The DexaPatch system is lyophilized for shelf stability and surgical handling properties, sterilized, and briefly rehydrated in the operating room prior to surgical implantation in a rabbit model of anterior spinal surgery. DexaPatch results in significantly reduced prevertebral edema radiographically and decreased fibrosis in prevertebral muscles compared to sham surgery. Background: This study aimed to create a comprehensive Core Outcome Set (COS) for assessing the long-term outcome (≥ 5 years) after Metabolic Bariatric Surgery (MBS), through the use of the Delphi method., Methods: The study utilized a three-phase approach. In Phase 1, a long list of items was identified through a literature review and expert input, forming the basis for an online Delphi survey. In Phase 2, Dutch healthcare professionals involved in MBS care, defined as having at least 1 year of experience in routine follow-up or managing issues arising during follow-up, rated the importance of these items over three Delphi rounds using a 5-point Likert scale. Participants had the option to suggest additional items. Consensus was defined as 75% agreement among panelists. In Phase 3, the final COS was validated at a national conference., Results: Thirty-one professionals participated in the first Delphi round. Of these, 28 (90%) completed the second round, and 24 (77%) completed the third round. The final COS, validated by 18 healthcare professionals, included various domains: short-term textbook outcome, weight loss, remission of comorbidities, quality of life, micronutrient deficiencies, lifestyle, psychopathology, long-term complications, and preoperative indication., Conclusions: The final COS offers a multidimensional approach to evaluate long-term outcomes after MBS. Pressure is mounting to minimize the carbon footprint of chemical industry while increasing its sustainability. An argument is made that working from Green Chemistry principles during discovery-based catalysis results in effective chemistry and circumvents a need to "rediscover" chemical reactivity under sustainable conditions. Examples of comparative success in selected examples of hydrophosphination catalysis in various degrees of development are provided to support two main ideas: 1) Starting from more sustainable practices in chemical discovery is inertia in methodology that should be overcome, and 2) substantial challenges remain in catalysis for which sustainable solutions would positively impact other areas of chemistry. Examples of successes, even in the face of the challenges noted, are presented herein as indications that even as a starting point, sustainability can meet short- and long-term needs. Fifty years ago, Tversky and Kahneman (Cognitive Psychology, 5[2], 207-232, 1973) reported that people's speeded estimations of 8 × 7 × 6 × 5 × 4 × 3 × 2 × 1 were notably higher than their estimations for the equivalent expression in the opposite order, 1 × 2 × 3 × 4 × 5 × 6 × 7 × 8 (Median = 2,250 vs. 512, respectively). On top of this order effect, both groups grossly underestimated the correct value (40,320). The differential effect of the two orders on estimation has become famous as an early demonstration of the anchoring effect, where people's judgments under uncertainty are unduly influenced by an initial reference point (or "anchor"). Despite this fame, to the best of our knowledge, this effect has never been replicated. In a sample of 253 U.S. adults, the current study provides the first replication of this foundational example of anchoring. It extends this effect for the first time to a within-participants design, revealing its relative robustness even among participants who see the descending order first. Drawing on procedures from the mathematical cognition literature, it shows how the anchoring effect can be mitigated: calibrating to the correct value of 6! reduces this effect, and calibrating to 10! eliminates it altogether. An individual differences analysis measures the arithmetic fluency of participants and their accuracy on a new estimation assessment, and finds that higher estimation ability may be a "protective factor" against some anchoring effects. Introduction: Hypoxia presents a physiological challenge to the Warfighters during military aviation and subterranean warfare operations by decreasing the supply of oxygen to the brain, which results in a reduced cognitive function depending on the magnitude and duration of hypoxic exposure. Moderate hypoxic exposures, fractions of inspired oxygen (FiO2) of 0.11 to 0.14, show no effects on simple tasks, but complex tasks like working memory may be hindered. Unfortunately, people often cannot recognize their own symptoms of hypoxemia, which are individualistic at moderate hypoxic exposure. Thus, screening tools, like gamified cognitive assessments, during moderate hypoxia may provide personnel objective feedback to initiate safety protocols before a possible accident. However, whether gamified assessments of working memory are sensitive to moderate hypoxia is unknown. Therefore, we tested the hypothesis which moderate normobaric hypoxia decreases gamified working memory performance when accounting for the individualistic responses of arterial blood oxygen saturations., Materials and Methods: Following 3 consecutive days of 2 practice sessions per day, 30 healthy adults (25 ± 5 years, 10 women) completed three 1-min rounds of the tablet-based working memory game (Backtracker, Statespace Labs, Inc.) at baseline and 60 and 90 min after exposure to FiO2 (= 0.138 ± 0.002 [hypoxia] and 0.201± 0.004 [normoxia] oxygen). Both conditions were completed on the same day and administered in a single-blind, block randomized manner. Arterial oxyhemoglobin saturation was estimated via forehead pulse oximetry (SpO2). Data were analyzed using linear mixed effects modeling., Results: Compared to normoxia (99 ± 1%), SpO2 was lower (P < .001) at 60 (90 ± 2%) and 90 (90 ± 2%) min of hypoxia. A decrease in SpO2 was associated with a statistically significant decrease in the proportion of both tiles with the correct location (P < .02; -0.016) and correct order of appearance recalled (P < .01; -0.016). A decrease in SpO2 was associated with a statistically significant decrease in median time to first tap (P < .01; -0.041 s) and median time between taps (P < .01; -0.030 s). A significant interaction effect between the SpO2 decrease and baseline performance was found for proportion of tiles with the correct location recalled (P < .05; -0.014), median time to first tap (P < .01; -0.070 s), and median time between taps (P < .01; -0.037 s). A significant interaction effect between the SpO2 decrease and the path length was found for the proportion of tiles with the correct location recalled (P < .01; +0.021), median time to first tap (P < .01; -0.036 s), and median time between taps (P < .01; -0.043 s)., Conclusions: These findings indicate that greater decreases in SpO2 during moderate hypoxic exposure hinder performance on a gamified assessment of working memory as measured by the proportion of correctly identified order and location of tiles. Considering the statistically significant decrease in both median time to first tap and median time between taps associated with the decrease in SpO2, participants are taking less time to plan or execute movements, which may compound or independently contribute to spatial and temporal memory mistakes., (© The Association of Military Surgeons of the United States 2024. The meaningful participation of young people from marginalized ethnic backgrounds in civic processes is central to the social cohesion of increasingly diverse liberal democracies, but their participation is compromised by a range of barriers resulting in decision-making that is disconnected from their lives. To address participation barriers, a group of young people from marginalized ethnic migrant backgrounds joined a team of researchers, social innovators, and community leaders to co-design and pilot an innovation to increase youth participation in policymaking. Delivered in phases over an 18-month period, the project followed an approach that combined social innovation and evaluation methods. The process revealed factors that help and hinder young people from marginalized ethnic backgrounds' genuine engagement in partnerships with adults. The project learnings informed principle-based guidelines for marginalized young people's civic engagement, which are offered to policymakers, practitioners, and researchers interested in inclusive youth participation., (© 2025 The Author(s). Target identification is crucial for drug screening and development because it can reveal the mechanism of drug action and ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results. Chemical biology, an interdisciplinary field combining chemistry and biology, can assist in this process by studying the interactions between active molecular compounds and proteins and their physiological effects. It can also help predict potential drug targets or candidates, develop new biomarker assays and diagnostic reagents, and evaluate the selectivity and range of active compounds to reduce the risk of off-target effects. Chemical biology can achieve these goals using techniques such as changing protein thermal stability, enzyme sensitivity, and molecular structure and applying probes, isotope labeling and mass spectrometry. Concurrently, computational biology employs a diverse array of computational models to predict drug targets. This approach also offers innovative avenues for repurposing existing drugs. Previous studies suggest that NIPT's implementation differed widely across countries but offer limited insight into what shaped these differences. To address this gap, we conducted an in-depth analysis of how NIPT was incorporated into prenatal care in the US, the Netherlands, and Japan-countries with similar economic status-to identify actionable lessons. We conducted an integrative literature review on the process of introducing and implementing NIPT, stakeholders' roles, documented considerations in the decision to introduce NIPT, implementation choices, and NIPT uptake. We included 184 sources, including white and gray literature and non-English sources. We identified 17 considerations that were documented to have influenced the decision whether to introduce NIPT across five domains: clinical considerations, ethical considerations and societal values, financial considerations, demand and capacity and applicable oversight. Fewer factors seem to have been considered in the US as compared to Japan or the Netherlands. Countries subsequently made choices on how to implement NIPT-we identified 35 such choices. While most of the identified choices were eventually considered by all three countries, they made different decisions (e.g., on out-of-pocket costs). In 2022, the estimated proportion of pregnant persons who used NIPT was 58% in the Netherlands, 49% in the US, and 9% in Japan. While differences in cultural values, population characteristics, and healthcare systems explain some variation, we identified other more adaptable aspects of the decision-making process (e.g., oversight) that may be useful for countries introducing NIPT or similar technologies to consider., (Published 2025. Introduction: Populations experiencing poverty often lack access to convenient lab tests. This analysis assesses trends observed from a national point of care (POC) lab donation program for free and charitable clinics across the United States., Methods: A total of 16 clinics were selected to receive a comprehensive package of POC lab tests. De-identified data on POC test utilization and results were assessed to descriptively identify trends in utilization (primary objective) and glycemic control (secondary objective). A paired t -test was utilized to identify statistically significant changes in HbA1c from baseline to predefined 90-day time intervals for all people living with diabetes (PLWD) and those with a baseline HbA1c ≥ 9.0 % (75 mmol/mol). The main comparison of interest was the change in HbA1c from baseline to 90-179 days., Results: A total of 17,563 POC tests were completed for 9658 patients with 3223 tests being HbA1c's. Photonic manipulation of large-capacity data with the advantages of high speed and low power consumption is a promising solution for explosive growth demands in the era of post-Moore. A well-developed lithium-niobate-on-insulator (LNOI) platform has been widely explored for high-performance electro-optic (EO) modulators to bridge electrical and optical signals. However, the photonic waveguides on the x-cut LNOI platform suffer serious polarization-mode conversion/coupling issues because of strong birefringence, making it hard to realize large-scale integration. Here, low-birefringence photonic integrated circuits (PICs) based on lithium-tantalate-on-insulator (LTOI) are proposed and demonstrated, which enables high-performance passive photonic devices as well as EO modulators, showing great potential for large-scale photonic chips. Analysis of mode conversion and evolution behaviors with both low- and high-birefringence shows undesired mode hybridizations can be effectively suppressed. A simple and universal fabrication process is developed and various representative passive photonic devices are demonstrated with impressive performances. Finally, a wavelength-division-multiplexed optical transmitter is developed with a data rate of 1.6 Tbps by monolithically integrating 8 EO modulators and an 8-channel arrayed waveguide grating. Therefore, the demonstrated low-birefringence LTOI platform shows strong ability in both passively and actively controlling photon behaviors on a chip, indicating great potential for ultrafast processing and communicating large-capacity data., (© 2025 The Author(s). Background: Multiple outpatient therapies have been developed for COVID-19 in high-risk individuals, but solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients were not well represented in controlled clinical trials. To date, few comparative studies have evaluated outcomes between outpatient therapies in this population., Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study using de-identified administrative claims data from OptumLabs Data Warehouse. Patients were included if they were age ≥ 18 years, diagnosed with COVID-19 between January 2022 and December 2023, and underwent SOT prior to COVID-19. The primary outcome was 30-day hospitalization. Stabilized inverse probability of treatment weighting was used to account for potential confounding variables., Results: 4192 SOT recipients with COVID-19 were identified. 1403 received an outpatient COVID-19 therapy, including anti-spike monoclonal antibodies (N = 748, 53.3%), molnupiravir (N = 327, 23.3%), ritonavir-boosted nirmatrelvir (N = 217, 15.5%), or remdesivir (N = 141, 10.0%). In weighted analysis compared to no treatment, anti-spike monoclonal antibodies (hazard ratio [HR] 0.39, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.28-0.55; p < 0.001), molnupiravir (HR 0.56, 95% CI 0.36-0.89; p = 0.013), and nirmatrelvir (HR 0.47, 95% CI 0.25-0.89; p = 0.020) were associated with reduced hospitalization risk, while remdesivir (HR 1.00, 95% CI 0.50-1.98; p = 0.992) was not. Hospitalization rates were similar between the treatment agents, apart from remdesivir showing a higher risk compared to anti-spike monoclonal antibodies., Conclusions: Outpatient COVID-19 therapies were largely associated with improved outcomes among SOT recipients. These treatment agents showed similar rates of 30-day hospitalization, except for remdesivir. Background: Stroke is one of the most serious illnesses worldwide and is the primary cause of acquired disability among adults. Post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) is a complication of stroke that significantly impacts patients' daily activities and social functions. Therefore, developing a risk prediction model for PSCI is essential for identifying and preventing disease progression., Objectives: This study systematically reviewed and analyzed PSCI prediction models, identifying the associated risk factors., Methods: We systematically retrieved literature from PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, and other sources. Two researchers independently extracted the literature and assessed the risk of bias using the Critical Appraisal and Data Extraction for Systematic Reviews of Prediction Modelling Studies (CHARMS) checklist and The Prediction Model Risk of Bias Assessment Tool (PROBAST)., Results: A total of 20 articles describe the PSCI prediction model, with an incidence rate ranging from 8% to 75%. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) value for the development models ranged from 0.66 to 0.969, while the validation models ranged from 0.763 to 0.893. Age, diabetes, hypersensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), hypertension, and homocysteine (hcy) were identified as the strongest predictors., Conclusion: In this systematic review, several PSCI prediction models demonstrate promising prediction performance, although they often lack external validation and exhibit high heterogeneity in some predictive factors. Therefore, we recommend that medical practitioners utilize a comprehensive set of predictive factors to screen for high-risk PSCI patients. The term "human fetal and embryological collections" refers to repositories or archives that house remains of human fetuses and embryos. Most of these remains have been obtained without informed consent from the next of kin, thus reflecting a time in history where this may have been acceptable. Previous quantitative studies seeking stakeholder perceptions toward these collections suggest that there is misalignment with the values of society today, and the current guiding frameworks pertaining to these collections. The aim of this study was to qualitatively explore and analyze the perceptions of key stakeholders regarding human fetal and embryological collections. Twenty-seven individuals signed up and completed the demographic survey. However, 25 attended the focus group interviews. The study sought to provide an in-depth exploration of how stakeholders perceive the value of fetal and embryological collections, and the importance of informed consent. The mean age of participants was 29.1 years of age with a gender distribution of 40.7% (n = 11 out of 27) men and 50.3% (n = 16 out of 27) of women. Thematic analysis identified four themes: (1) consent; (2) preparation for clinical practice; (3) equity and fairness; and (4) educational value, with several subthemes identified at macro, meso, and micro ethical levels. Macro subthemes included importance of informed consent, equity and fairness, and genetic composition. Meso subthemes included respect and privacy, and legal and institutional considerations. Micro subthemes included emotional considerations, preparation for clinical practice, and educational value. It is striking that visual attention, the process by which attentional resources are allocated in the visual field so as to locally enhance visual perception, is a pervasive component of models of eye movements in reading, but is seldom considered in models of isolated word recognition. We describe BRAID, a new Bayesian word-Recognition model with Attention, Interference and Dynamics. As most of its predecessors, BRAID incorporates three sensory, perceptual, and orthographic knowledge layers together with a lexical membership submodel. Its originality resides in also including three mechanisms that modulate letter identification within strings: an acuity gradient, lateral interference, and visual attention. We calibrated the model such that its temporal scale was consistent with behavioral data, and then explored the model's capacity to generalize to other, independent effects. We evaluated the model's capacity to account for the word length effect in lexical decision, for the optimal viewing position effect, and for the interaction of crowding and frequency effects in word recognition. We further examined how these effects were modulated by variations in the visual attention distribution. We show that visual attention modulates all three effects and that a narrow distribution of visual attention results in performance patterns that mimic those reported in impaired readers. Overall, the BRAID model could be conceived as a core building block, towards the development of integrated models of reading aloud and eye movement control, or of visual recognition of impaired readers, or any context in which visual attention does matter., Competing Interests: Declarations.
