In an era marked by growing global population and climate variability, ensuring food security has become a paramount concern. Rice, being a staple crop for billions of people, requires accurate and timely yield prediction to ensure global food security. This study was undertaken across two rice crop seasons in the Udham Singh Nagar district of Uttarakhand state to predict rice yield at 45, 60 and 90 days after transplanting (DAT) through machine learning (ML) models, utilizing a combination of optical and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data in conjunction with crop biophysical parameters. Results revealed that the ML models were able to provide relatively accurate early yield estimates. For summer rice, eXtreme gradient boosting (XGB) was the best-performing model at all three stages (45, 60, and 90 DAT), while for kharif rice, the best-performing models at 45, 60, and 90 DAT were XGB, Neural network (NNET), and Cubist, respectively. The combined ranking of ML models showed that prediction accuracy improved as the prediction date approaches harvest, and the best prediction of yield was observed at 90 DAT for both summer and kharif rice. Overall rankings indicate that for summer rice, the top three models were XGB, NNET, and Support vector regression, while for kharif rice, these were Cubist, NNET, and Random Forest, respectively. The findings of this study offer valuable insights into the potential of the combined use of remote sensing and biophysical parameters using ML models, which enhances food security planning and resource management by enabling more informed decision-making by stakeholders such as farmers, policy planners as well as researchers., (© 2024. Radar systems are diverse and used in industries such as air traffic control, weather monitoring, and military and maritime applications. Within the scope of this study, we focus on using radar for human detection and recognition. This study evaluated the general state of micro-Doppler radar-based human recognition technology, the related literature, and state-of-the-art methods. This study aims to provide guidelines for new research in this area. This comprehensive study provides researchers with a thorough review of the existing literature. It gives a taxonomy of the literature and classifies the existing literature by the radar types used, the focus of the research, targeted use cases, and the security concerns raised by the authors. This paper serves as a repository for numerous studies that have been listed, critically evaluated, and systematically classified.

Background: Changes in spatio-temporal gait parameters and their variability during balance-challenging tasks are markers of motor performance linked to fall risk. Radio frequency (RF) sensors hold great promise towards achieving continuous remote monitoring of these parameters., Research Questions: To establish the concurrent validity of RF-based gait metrics extracted using micro-Doppler (µD) signatures and to determine whether these metrics are sensitive to gait modifications created by multidirectional visual perturbations., Methods: Fifteen participants walked overground in a virtual environment (VE) and VE with medio-lateral (ML) and antero-posterior (AP) perturbations. An optoelectronic motion capture system and one RF sensor were used to extract the linear velocity of the trunk and estimate step time (ST), step velocity (SV), step length (SL), and their variability (STV, SVV, and SLV). Intra-class coefficient for consistency (ICC), mean and standard deviation of the differences (MD), 95 % limits of agreement, and Pearson correlation coefficients (r) were used to determine concurrent validity. One-way repeated-measures analysis of variance was used to analyze the main and interaction effects of visual conditions., Results: All outcomes showed good to excellent reliability (r>0.795, ICC>0.886). Average gait parameters showed good to excellent agreement, with values obtained with the RF sensor systematically smaller than the values obtained with the markers (MD of 0.001 s, 0.09 m/s, and 0.06 m). Gait variability parameters showed poor to moderate agreement, with values obtained with the RF sensor systematically larger than those obtained with the markers (MD of 1.9 %-3.9 %). Both measurement systems reported decreased SL and SV during ML perturbations, but the gait variability parameters extracted with the radar were not able to detect the higher STV and SLV during this condition., Significance: The radar µD signature is a valid and reliable method for the assessment of average spatio-temporal gait parameters but gait variability measures need to be viewed with caution because of the lower levels of agreement and sensitivity to ML visual perturbations. Respiration is an invaluable signal that facilitates the real-time observation of physiological dynamics. In recent years, the advancement of noncontact measurement technology has gained momentum in capturing physiological activities in natural settings. This technology is anticipated to be found not only in humans but also in nonhuman primates. Currently, the predominant noncontact approach for nonhuman animals involves measuring vital signs through subtle variations in skin color. However, this approach is limited when addressing areas of the body covered with hair or when working in outdoor settings under fluctuating sunlight. To overcome this issue, we focused on noncontact respiratory measurements using millimeter-wave radar. Millimeter-wave radar systems, which employ millimeter waves that can penetrate animal fur and estimate respiration-derived periodic body motion, exhibit minimal susceptibility to sunlight interference. Thus, this method shows potential for conducting noncontact vital measurements in natural and outdoor settings. In this study, we validated a millimeter-wave radar methodology for capturing respiration in outdoor-housed rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta). The radar was positioned beyond the captive enclosure and maintained at a distance >5 m from the target. Millimeter waves were transmitted to the target, and the reflected waves were used to estimate skin surface displacement associated with respiration. The results revealed periodic skin surface displacement, and the estimated respiratory rates weres within the reported range of respiratory rates for rhesus macaques. These results suggest the potential applicability of millimeter-wave radar for noncontact respiration monitoring in outdoor-living macaques without anesthesia or immobilization. Measuring vital signs (VS) contained in the echoes is crucial to the analyses of breathing and heartbeat signals using medical radar. Although many advanced signal processing algorithms have been developed for radar-based VS measurement and make some improved progress, existing schemes cannot achieve a good estimation of echo phases modulated by the respiratory and cardiac activities with high accuracy or low computation, and thus resulting in serious performance degradation on the subsequent separation of breathing and heartbeat patterns as well as the assessment of breathing rate (BR), heart rate (HR), and heart rate variability (HRV). In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective method to measure VS for medical radar, named 3M method. Specifically, our method firstly introduces the Markov-Gauss model to obtain the recursive expression of the echo phases carrying VS, and secondly derive a simple observation equation (SOE) to reflect the relationship between the observed signal and VS of radar measurement. Thirdly, the aforementioned Markov-Gauss model and SOE are fused by Kalman filter to measure VS with accurate estimation. The 3M method demonstrates an elegant structure, low complexity and excellent features introduced by Kalman filter. Simulation results show the superiority of 3M over other methods. Then, we conduct extensive experiments with insightful visualizations to validate the effectiveness of the 3M method. Comparative results on different scenarios illustrate that the 3M method not only achieves state-of-the-art VS measurement performance but also expresses robust properties to HRV analysis.

Physiotherapy plays a crucial role in the rehabilitation of damaged or defective organs due to injuries or illnesses, often requiring long-term supervision by a physiotherapist in clinical settings or at home. AI-based support systems have been developed to enhance the precision and effectiveness of physiotherapy, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. These systems, which include game-based or tele-rehabilitation monitoring using camera-based optical systems like Vicon and Microsoft Kinect, face challenges such as privacy concerns, occlusion, and sensitivity to environmental light. Non-optical sensor alternatives, such as Inertial Movement Units (IMUs), Wi-Fi, ultrasound sensors, and ultrawide band (UWB) radar, have emerged to address these issues. Although IMUs are portable and cost-effective, they suffer from disadvantages like drift over time, limited range, and susceptibility to magnetic interference. In this study, a single UWB radar was utilized to recognize five therapeutic exercises related to the upper limb, performed by 34 male volunteers in a real environment. A novel feature fusion approach was developed to extract distinguishing features for these exercises. Various machine learning methods were applied, with the EnsembleRRGraBoost ensemble method achieving the highest recognition accuracy of 99.45%. The performance of the EnsembleRRGraBoost model was further validated using five-fold cross-validation, maintaining its high accuracy.

This study introduces an innovative approach by incorporating statistical offset features, range profiles, time-frequency analyses, and azimuth-range-time characteristics to effectively identify various human daily activities. Our technique utilizes nine feature vectors consisting of six statistical offset features and three principal component analysis network (PCANet) fusion attributes. These statistical offset features are derived from combined elevation and azimuth data, considering their spatial angle relationships. The fusion attributes are generated through concurrent 1D networks using CNN-BiLSTM. The process begins with the temporal fusion of 3D range-azimuth-time data, followed by PCANet integration. Subsequently, a conventional classification model is employed to categorize a range of actions. Our methodology was tested with 21,000 samples across fourteen categories of human daily activities, demonstrating the effectiveness of our proposed solution. The experimental outcomes highlight the superior robustness of our method, particularly when using the Margenau-Hill Spectrogram for time-frequency analysis. When employing a random forest classifier, our approach outperformed other classifiers in terms of classification efficacy, achieving an average sensitivity, precision, F1, specificity, and accuracy of 98.25%, 98.25%, 98.25%, 99.87%, and 99.75%, respectively.

Falls among the elderly population pose significant health risks, often leading to morbidity and decreased quality of life. Traditional fall detection methods, namely wearable devices and cameras, have limitations such as lighting conditions and privacy concerns. Radar-based fall detection has emerged as a promising alternative, offering unobtrusive technique. In this study, an attempt has been made to classify fall detection using smoothed pseudo wigner-ville distribution (SPWVD) images and XGBoost learning. For this, online publicly available radar database (N=15) is considered. Radar signals is employed to SPWVD for time-frequency representation images. Ten features are extracted and applied to XGBoost learning. Experiments are performed and performance is evaluated using 10-fold cross validation. The proposed approach is able to discriminate elderly fall. Using XGBoost learning, the approach yields a maximum average classification accuracy, f1-score, precision, sensitivity, specificity, and kappa scores of 87.47%, 87.38%, 88.12%, 86.81%, 88.31% and 74.94% respectively. The combination of conventional features with concentration measures and median frequency obtained the second best performance. Thus, the proposed framework could be utilized for accurate and efficient detection of falls among the elderly population in their private spaces.

Falls among the elderly are a common and serious health risk that can lead to physical injuries and other complications. To promptly detect and respond to fall events, radar-based fall detection systems have gained widespread attention. In this paper, a deep learning model is proposed based on the frequency spectrum of radar signals, called the convolutional bidirectional long short-term memory (CB-LSTM) model. The introduction of the CB-LSTM model enables the fall detection system to capture both temporal sequential and spatial features simultaneously, thereby enhancing the accuracy and reliability of the detection. Extensive comparison experiments demonstrate that our model achieves an accuracy of 98.83% in detecting falls, surpassing other relevant methods currently available. In summary, this study provides effective technical support using the frequency spectrum and deep learning methods to monitor falls among the elderly through the design and experimental validation of a radar-based fall detection system, which has great potential for improving quality of life for the elderly and providing timely rescue measures.

To address the challenges in recognizing various types of falls, which often exhibit high similarity and are difficult to distinguish, this paper proposes a human fall classification system based on the SE-Residual Concatenate Network (SE-RCNet) with adaptive weighted fusion. First, we designed the innovative SE-RCNet network, incorporating SE modules after dense and residual connections to automatically recalibrate feature channel weights and suppress irrelevant features. Subsequently, this network was used to train and classify three types of radar images: time-distance images, time-distance images, and distance-distance images. By adaptively fusing the classification results of these three types of radar images, we achieved higher action recognition accuracy. Experimental results indicate that SE-RCNet achieved F1-scores of 94.0%, 94.3%, and 95.4% for the three radar image types on our self-built dataset. After applying the adaptive weighted fusion method, the F1-score further improved to 98.1%.

Study Objectives: The demand for cost-effective and accessible alternatives to polysomnography (PSG), the conventional diagnostic method for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), has surged. In this study, we have developed and validated a deep learning model for detecting apnea-hypopnea events using radar data., Methods: We conducted a single-center prospective cohort study, dividing participants with suspected sleep-disordered breathing into development and temporally independent test sets. Utilizing a hybrid CNN-Transformer architecture, we performed 5-fold cross-validation on the development set to develop and subsequently validate the model. Evaluation metrics included sensitivity for event detection, mean absolute error (MAE), intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), and Pearson correlation coefficient (r) for apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) estimation. Linearly weighted kappa statistics (κ) assessed OSA severity., Results: The development set comprised 54 participants (July 2021-May 2022), while the test set included 35 participants (June 2022-June 2023). In the test set, our model achieved an event detection sensitivity of 67.2% (95% CI: 65.8%, 68.5%) and demonstrated a MAE of 7.54 (95% CI: 5.36, 9.72), indicating good agreement (ICC = 0.889 [95% CI: 0.792, 0.942]) and a strong correlation (r = 0.892 [95% CI: 0.795, 0.945]) with the ground truth for AHI estimation. Furthermore, OSA severity estimation showed substantial agreement (κ = 0.780 [95% CI: 0.658, 0.903])., Conclusions: Our study highlights radar sensors and advanced AI models' potential to improve OSA diagnosis, paving the path for future radar-based diagnostic models in sleep medicine research., (© The Author(s) 2024. Aiming at the characteristics that the signal noise ratio (SNR) gradually decreases from the near to far range of the swath, an adaptive phase filtering algorithm based on Goldstein filtering and combined with multiple quality-guided graphs was proposed. Firstly, the components used to determine the filtering parameters were obtained through residue density, pseudo-coherence coefficient and pseudo-SNR, the three quality-guided graphs. Then, the filter parameters were calculated by weighting the three components. Finally, the size of filtering window was determined according to the account of residues, and the interferometric phase noise was removed in frequency domain. Simulated data, TSX/TDX data and airborne interferometric imaging radar altimeter data were used to verify the performance of the new algorithm. Compared with the results of Goldstein filtering and its improved algorithms, the results showed that the proposed algorithm can effectively filter out phase noise while maintaining the edge characteristics of interferometric fringe. The section of filtering result can well match with the section of simulated pure interfeometric phase. Moreover, the algorithm proposed in this paper can effectively remove the noise in the interferogram of TSX/TDX sea ice data, and the residues' filtering rate was above 86%, which can effectively remove the phase residues of the sea ice surface while maintaining the characteristics of the sea ice edge. Assessing sleep posture, a critical component in sleep tests, is crucial for understanding an individual's sleep quality and identifying potential sleep disorders. However, monitoring sleep posture has traditionally posed significant challenges due to factors such as low light conditions and obstructions like blankets. The use of radar technolsogy could be a potential solution. The objective of this study is to identify the optimal quantity and placement of radar sensors to achieve accurate sleep posture estimation. We invited 70 participants to assume nine different sleep postures under blankets of varying thicknesses. This was conducted in a setting equipped with a baseline of eight radars-three positioned at the headboard and five along the side. We proposed a novel technique for generating radar maps, Spatial Radio Echo Map (SREM), designed specifically for data fusion across multiple radars. Sleep posture estimation was conducted using a Multiview Convolutional Neural Network (MVCNN), which serves as the overarching framework for the comparative evaluation of various deep feature extractors, including ResNet-50, EfficientNet-50, DenseNet-121, PHResNet-50, Attention-50, and Swin Transformer. Among these, DenseNet-121 achieved the highest accuracy, scoring 0.534 and 0.804 for nine-class coarse- and four-class fine-grained classification, respectively. This led to further analysis on the optimal ensemble of radars. For the radars positioned at the head, a single left-located radar proved both essential and sufficient, achieving an accuracy of 0.809. When only one central head radar was used, omitting the central side radar and retaining only the three upper-body radars resulted in accuracies of 0.779 and 0.753, respectively. This study established the foundation for determining the optimal sensor configuration in this application, while also exploring the trade-offs between accuracy and the use of fewer sensors.

Conventional geodetic methods rely on point measurements, which have drawbacks for detecting and tracking geologic disasters at specific locations. In this study, the time series Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) approach was incorporated to estimate non-linear surface deformation caused by tectonic, shoreline reclamation, and other anthropogenic activities in economically important urban regions of Pakistan's southern coast, which possesses around 270 km. The shoreline is extended from the low-populated area on the premises of the Hub River in the west to the highly populated Karachi City and Eastern Industrial Zone, where we collected the Sentinel-1A C-band data from 2017 to 2023 to address urban security and threats to human life and property. The main advantage of opting for the non-linear persistent scatterer interferometric SAR (PSInSAR) approach for this study is that it exposes minute movements without any prior consideration of conventional monitoring techniques, making it valid in continuously varying regions. An average vertical displacement range of - 170 to + 82 mm per year was found, which was used to investigate the potential correlation with the most effective causative parameters of deformation. The densely populated areas of the study area experience an annual subsidence of 170 mm, and the less populated western region experiences an uplift of 82 mm annually. Land deformation varies along the coast of the study area, where the eastern region is highly reclaimed and is affected by erosion. Groundwater table-depleting regions experienced high levels of land subsidence, and tectonic activities controlled vertical displacement in the region. Major variation was detected after an earthquake occurred along fault lines. This study introduces a contactless blood pressure monitoring approach that combines conventional radar signal processing with novel deep learning architectures. During the preprocessing phase, datasets suitable for synchronization are created by integrating Kalman filtering, multiscale bandpass filters, and a periodic extraction method in the time domain. These data comprise data on chest micro variations, encapsulating a complex array of physiological and biomedical information reflective of cardiac micromotions. The Radar-based Stacked Deformable convolution Network (RSD-Net) integrates channel and spatial self attention mechanisms within a deformable convolutional framework to enhance feature extraction from radar signals. The network architecture systematically employs deformable convolutions for initial deep feature extraction from individual signals. Subsequently, continuous blood pressure estimation is conducted using self attention mechanisms on feature map from single source coupled with multi-feature map channel attention. The performance of model is corroborated via the open-source dataset procured using a non-invasive 24 GHz six-port continuous wave radar system. The dataset, encompassing readings from 30 healthy individuals subjected to diverse conditions including rest, the Valsalva maneuver, apnea, and tilt-table examinations. It serves to substantiate the validity and resilience of the proposed method in the non-contact assessment of continuous blood pressure. Evaluation metrics reveal Pearson correlation coefficients of 0.838 for systolic and 0.797 for diastolic blood pressure predictions. The Mean Error (ME) and Standard Deviation (SD) for systolic and diastolic blood pressure measurements are -0.32 ±6.14 mmHg and -0.20 ±5.50 mmHg, respectively. The ablation study assesses the contribution of different structural components of the RSD-Net, validating their significance in the overall of model performance.

The subsidence of the earth's surface in mining areas is characterized by fast speed and large gradients. Conventional small baseline subset interferometric synthetic aperture radar (SBAS-InSAR) monitoring can significantly underestimate results, making it challenging to capture the surface's temporal subsidence features. In this context, this paper proposes a method for monitoring subsidence in mining areas. It utilizes a phase unwrapping network (PUNet) and a fused Weibull model within the SBAS-InSAR framework to address nonlinear and large-gradient subsidence. The basic principle of this method is to first process the SAR images using the small baseline method to obtain the differential interferogram, utilizing the PUNet to obtain reliable large-gradient unwrapped phases. Next, the Weibull model parameters of each pixel are calculated based on the unwrapped phase, and the temporal subsidence of each point on the surface is determined using the calculated parameters. This method introduces a nonlinear model into the SBAS-InSAR solution, which is more consistent with the subsidence characteristics of mining areas. Heart rate is a crucial vital sign and a valuable indicator for assessing the physical and psychological condition of a target animal. Heart rate contributes to (1) fundamental information for cognitive research, (2) an indicator of psychological and physical stress, and (3) improving the animal welfare of captive animals, especially in nonhuman primate studies. Heart rate has been measured using a contact-type device; however, the device burdens the target animals and that there are risks associated with anesthesia during installation. This study explores the application of heartbeat measurement techniques using millimeter-wave radar, primarily developed for humans, as a remote and noninvasive method for measuring the heart rate of nonhuman primates. Through a measurement test conducted on two chimpanzees, we observed a remarkable correspondence between the peak frequency spectrum of heart rate estimated using millimeter-wave radar and the mean value obtained from electrocardiograph data, thereby validating the accuracy of the method. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of the precise measurement of great apes' heart rate using millimeter-wave radar technology. Compared to heart rate measurement using video analysis, the method using millimeter-wave radar has the advantage that it is less susceptible to weather and lighting conditions and that measurement techniques for multiple individuals have been developed for human subjects, while its disadvantage is that validation of measurement from long distances has not been completed. Another disadvantage common to both methods is that measurement becomes difficult when the movement of the target individual is large. Nowadays, classifying human activities is applied in many essential fields, such as healthcare, security monitoring, and search and rescue missions. Radar sensor-based human activity classification is regarded as a superior approach in comparison to other techniques, such as visual perception-based methodologies and wearable gadgets. However, noise usually exists throughout the process of extracting raw radar signals, decreasing the quality and reliability of the extracted features. This paper presents a novel method for removing white Gaussian noise from raw radar signals using a denoising algorithm before classifying human activities using a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN). Specifically, the denoising algorithm is used as a preprocessing step to remove white Gaussian noise from the input raw radar signal. After that, a lightweight Cross-Residual Convolutional Neural Network (CRCNN) with adaptable cross-residual connections is suggested for classification. The analysis results show that the denoising algorithm with a range-bin interval of 3 and a cut-threshold value of 3 achieves the best denoising effect. When the denoising algorithm was applied to the dataset, CRCNN improved the right classification rate by up to 10% compared to the recognition results achieved with the original noise-added dataset. Additionally, a comparison of the CRCNN with the denoising algorithm solution with six cutting-edge DCNNs was conducted. Determining movement parameters for pest insects such as tephritid fruit flies is critical to developing models which can be used to increase the effectiveness of surveillance and control strategies. In this study, harmonic radar was used to track wild-caught male Queensland fruit flies (Qflies), Bactrocera tryoni, in papaya fields. Experiment 1 continuously tracked single flies which were prodded to induce movement. Qfly movements from this experiment showed greater mean squared displacement than predicted by both a simple random walk (RW) or a correlated random walk (CRW) model, suggesting that movement parameters derived from the entire data set do not adequately describe the movement of individual Qfly at all spatial scales or for all behavioral states. This conclusion is supported by both fractal and hidden Markov model (HMM) analysis. Lower fractal dimensions (straighter movement paths) were observed at larger spatial scales (> 2.5 m) suggesting that Qflies have qualitatively distinct movement at different scales. Further, a two-state HMM fit the observed movement data better than the CRW or RW models. Human action recognition (HAR) technology based on radar signals has garnered significant attention from both industry and academia due to its exceptional privacy-preserving capabilities, noncontact sensing characteristics, and insensitivity to lighting conditions. However, the scarcity of accurately labeled human radar data poses a significant challenge in meeting the demand for large-scale training datasets required by deep model-based HAR technology, thus substantially impeding technological advancements in this field. To address this issue, a semi-supervised learning algorithm, MF-Match, is proposed in this paper. This algorithm computes pseudo-labels for larger-scale unsupervised radar data, enabling the model to extract embedded human behavioral information and enhance the accuracy of HAR algorithms. Furthermore, the method incorporates contrastive learning principles to improve the quality of model-generated pseudo-labels and mitigate the impact of mislabeled pseudo-labels on recognition performance. Experimental results demonstrate that this method achieves action recognition accuracies of 86.69% and 91.48% on two widely used radar spectrum datasets, respectively, utilizing only 10% labeled data, thereby validating the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

The rapid development of active safety systems in the automotive industry and research in autonomous driving requires reliable, high-precision sensors that provide rich information about the surrounding environment and the behaviour of other road users. In practice, there is always some non-zero mounting misalignment, i.e., angular inaccuracy in a sensor's mounting on a vehicle. It is essential to accurately estimate and compensate for this misalignment further programmatically (in software). In the case of radars, imprecise mounting may result in incorrect/inaccurate target information, problems with the tracking algorithm, or a decrease in the power reflected from the target. Sensor misalignment should be mitigated in two ways: through the correction of an inaccurate alignment angle via the estimated value of the misalignment angle or alerting other components of the system of potential sensor degradation if the misalignment is beyond the operational range. This work analyses misalignment's influences on radar sensors and other system components. In the mathematically proven example of a vertically misaligned radar, pedestrian detectability dropped to one-third of the maximum range. In addition, mathematically derived heading estimation errors demonstrate the impact on data association in data fusion. The simulation results presented show that the angle of misalignment exponentially increases the risk of false track splitting. Additionally, the paper presents a comprehensive review of radar alignment techniques, mostly found in the patent literature, and implements a baseline algorithm, along with suggested key performance indicators (KPIs) to facilitate comparisons for other researchers.

Objective outcomes for pediatric community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) are lacking. The desirability of outcome ranking (DOOR) and response adjusted for duration of antibiotic risk (RADAR) outcome encompass clinical benefit and adverse effects, while also accounting for antibiotic exposure. We evaluated DOOR/RADAR through simulations and compared sample size considerations to non-inferiority designs in a hypothetical trial comparing antibiotics to no antibiotics (i.e., placebo) for children with mild CAP. We also evaluated a trial comparing different durations of antibiotics. Three scenarios were considered - one with no difference in DOOR between the two groups, one in which placebo is more efficacious, and another in which amoxicillin is more efficacious than placebo. Power to detect a difference between arms was greater using DOOR/RADAR compared to DOOR. Assuming a sample size of 200, DOOR had 2.5%, 50%, and 65% power to detect a statistical difference between arms for Scenarios 1-3, respectively, significantly less than DOOR/RADAR. Importantly, DOOR/RADAR incorrectly identified placebo as superior in Scenario 3 where amoxicillin was truly efficacious. Sample size requirements for non-inferiority designs were larger to achieve similar levels of power as DOOR and DOOR/RADAR. Radar sensors, leveraging the Doppler effect, enable the nonintrusive capture of kinetic and physiological motions while preserving privacy. Deep learning (DL) facilitates radar sensing for healthcare applications such as gait recognition and vital-sign measurement. However, band-dependent patterns, indicating variations in patterns and power scales associated with frequencies in time-frequency representation (TFR), challenge radar sensing applications using DL. Frequency-dependent characteristics and features with lower power scales may be overlooked during representation learning. This paper proposes an Enhanced Band-Dependent Learning framework (E-BDL) comprising an adaptive sub-band filtering module, a representation learning module, and a sub-view contrastive module to fully detect band-dependent features in sub-frequency bands and leverage them for classification. Experimental validation is conducted on two radar datasets, including gait abnormality recognition for Alzheimer's disease (AD) and AD-related dementia (ADRD) risk evaluation and vital-sign monitoring for hemodynamics scenario classification. For hemodynamics scenario classification, E-BDL-ResNet achieves competitive performance in overall accuracy and class-wise evaluations compared to recent methods. For ADRD risk evaluation, the results demonstrate E-BDL-ResNet's superior performance across all candidate models, highlighting its potential as a clinical tool. E-BDL effectively detects salient sub-bands in TFRs, enhancing representation learning and improving the performance and interpretability of DL-based models.

IoT sensors offer a wide range of sensing capabilities, many of which have potential health applications. Existing solutions for IoT in healthcare have notable limitations, such as closed-source, limited I/O protocols, limited cloud platform support, and missing specific functionality for health use cases. Developing an open-source internet of things (IoT) gateway solution that addresses these limitations and provides reliability, broad applicability, and utility is highly desirable. Combining a wide range of sensor data streams from IoT devices with ambulatory mHealth data would open up the potential to provide a detailed 360-degree view of the relationship between patient physiology, behavior, and environment. We have developed RADAR-IoT as an open-source IoT gateway framework, to harness this potential. It aims to connect multiple IoT devices at the edge, perform limited on-device data processing and analysis, and integrate with cloud-based mobile health platforms, such as RADAR-base, enabling real-time data processing. We also present a proof-of-concept data collection from this framework, using prototype hardware in two locations. The RADAR-IoT framework, combined with the RADAR-base mHealth platform, provides a comprehensive view of a user's health and environment by integrating static IoT sensors and wearable devices. Despite its current limitations, it offers a promising open-source solution for health research, with potential applications in managing infection control, monitoring chronic pulmonary disorders, and assisting patients with impaired motor control or cognitive ability.

This work investigated the annual variations in dry snow (DSRZ) and wet snow radar zones (WSRZ) in the north of the Antarctic Peninsula between 2015-2023. A specific code for snow zone detection on Sentinel-1 images was created on Google Earth Engine by combining the CryoSat-2 digital elevation model and air temperature data from ERA5. Regions with backscatter coefficients (σ⁰) values exceeding -6.5 dB were considered the extent of surface melt occurrence, and the dry snow line was considered to coincide with the -11 °C isotherm of the average annual air temperature. The annual variation in WSRZ exhibited moderate correlations with annual average air temperature, total precipitation, and the sum of annual degree-days. However, statistical tests indicated low determination coefficients and no significant trend values in DSRZ behavior with atmospheric variables. The results of reducing DSRZ area for 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 compared to 2018/2018 indicated the upward in dry zone line in this AP region. The methodology demonstrated its efficacy for both quantitative and qualitative analyses of data obtained in digital processing environments, allowing for the large-scale spatial and temporal variations monitoring and for the understanding changes in glacier mass loss.

Human action recognition based on optical and infrared video data is greatly affected by the environment, and feature extraction in traditional machine learning classification methods is complex; therefore, this paper proposes a method for human action recognition using Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar based on an asymmetric convolutional residual network. First, the radar echo data are analyzed and processed to extract the micro-Doppler time domain spectrograms of different actions. Second, a strategy combining asymmetric convolution and the Mish activation function is adopted in the residual block of the ResNet18 network to address the limitations of linear and nonlinear transformations in the residual block for micro-Doppler spectrum recognition. This approach aims to enhance the network's ability to learn features effectively. Finally, the Improved Convolutional Block Attention Module (ICBAM) is integrated into the residual block to enhance the model's attention and comprehension of input data. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves a high accuracy of 98.28% in action recognition and classification within complex scenes, surpassing classic deep learning approaches. Moreover, this method significantly improves the recognition accuracy for actions with similar micro-Doppler features and demonstrates excellent anti-noise recognition performance.

Breathing is one of the body's most basic functions and abnormal breathing can indicate underlying cardiopulmonary problems. Monitoring respiratory abnormalities can help with early detection and reduce the risk of cardiopulmonary diseases. In this study, a 77 GHz frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) millimetre-wave (mmWave) radar was used to detect different types of respiratory signals from the human body in a non-contact manner for respiratory monitoring (RM). To solve the problem of noise interference in the daily environment on the recognition of different breathing patterns, the system utilised breathing signals captured by the millimetre-wave radar. Firstly, we filtered out most of the static noise using a signal superposition method and designed an elliptical filter to obtain a more accurate image of the breathing waveforms between 0.1 Hz and 0.5 Hz. Secondly, combined with the histogram of oriented gradient (HOG) feature extraction algorithm, K-nearest neighbours (KNN), convolutional neural network (CNN), and HOG support vector machine (G-SVM) were used to classify four breathing modes, namely, normal breathing, slow and deep breathing, quick breathing, and meningitic breathing. The overall accuracy reached up to 94.75%. Therefore, this study effectively supports daily medical monitoring.

Publicly accessible weather radar data have significant capabilities for meteorological measurements and predictions and, further, have the potential to measure nonmeteorological events that include smoke, ash, and debris plumes as well as explosions. The ability to identify and track nonmeteorological events can be of assistance in emergency response, hazard mitigation, and related activities in locations where radar coverage both exists and is recorded and accessible to the user. In this study, events from multiple locations in the United States that are reported in news outlets are assessed using a manual inspection process of Level 2 weather radar data to identify anthropogenic and nonbiological returns. Explosive events are also identified, and a large high-altitude debris cloud from the intentional destruction of the SpaceX Starship is tracked across a wide area. Finally, future efforts using a machine learning model are discussed as a means of automating the process and potentially enabling near-real-time nonmeteorological event identification in the same areas where the data are accessible. Using weather radar data can be a valuable new tool for Department of Defense systems to aid in military awareness, and for interagency emergency response and forensic mission experts to consider national weather service data in their mission profiles. Radar data can be effective in detecting several common types of emergencies and inform and aid response personnel.

Climate change is altering the timing of seasonal events for many taxa. There is limited understanding of how northward/southward songbird migration follows or is limited by the latitudinal progression of seasonal transitions. Consistent environmental conditions that migrating birds encounter across latitudes likely represent or correlate with important resources or limiting factors for migration. We tested whether migratory passage-observed via radar-consistently tracked land surface variables and phenophases across latitudes in the US Central Flyway in both spring and fall. The daily temperatures, precipitation and vegetation greenness occurring on 10%, 50% and 90% cumulative passage dates changed substantially with latitude, indicating that most migrants experienced rapidly changing conditions as they headed north or south. Temperature did not limit the progression of migration in either season. Peak spring migration in the southern US occurred nearly 40 days after the spring green wave, the northward progression of vegetation growth, but nearly caught up to green-up at 48° N. Spring migration phenology may have evolved to prioritize earlier arrival for breeding. Across all latitudes, peak fall migration coincided with the same land surface phenophase, an interval of 26 days prior to dormancy onset. Migrants may rely on phenological events in vegetation during fall stopovers. Considering that (a) migratory passage tracked fall land surface phenology across latitudes at a continental scale, (b) previous studies at local scales have demonstrated the importance of fruit during fall migratory stopover and (c) fruiting phenology in North America is occurring later over time while fall migration is advancing, the potential for mismatch between fall fruiting and bird migration phenology urgently needs further investigation., (© 2024 The Authors. Delirium is highly prevalent among hospitalized older adults and is associated with unfavorable outcomes. However, delirium often remains undiagnosed in the hospital context. Having a valid, simple, and fast screening tool could help in limiting the additional workload for healthcare professionals, without leaving delirium undetected. The aim of this study was to estimate the sensitivity and specificity of the Recognizing Acute Delirium As part of your Routine (RADAR) scale in an Italian hospital. An observational cross-sectional study was conducted. A total of 150 patients aged ≥70 years were enrolled. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves using the Confusion Assessment Method (CAM) criterion-defined delirium as the gold standard were plotted to evaluate the performance of the RADAR scale. The cut-off suggested by previous research was used to estimate the sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values of the RADAR scale. The involved patients were mostly females (60%; n = 90), with a median age of 84 years (I-III quartiles: 80-88). According to the CAM and the RADAR scale, 37 (25%) and 58 (39%) patients were classified as experiencing delirium, respectively. The area under the ROC curve of the RADAR scale was 0.916. Furthermore, the RADAR scale showed robust sensitivity (95%), specificity (80%), and positive (60%) and negative predictive values (98%). The RADAR scale is thus suggested to be a valid tool for screening assessment of delirium in hospitalized older adults.

A 77 GHz frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar was utilized to extract biomechanical parameters for gait analysis in indoor scenarios. By preprocessing the collected raw radar data and eliminating environmental noise, a range-velocity-time (RVT) data cube encompassing the subjects' information was derived. The strongest signals from the torso in the velocity and range dimensions and the enveloped signal from the toe in the velocity dimension were individually separated for the gait parameters extraction. Then, six gait parameters, including step time, stride time, step length, stride length, torso velocity, and toe velocity, were measured. In addition, the Qualisys system was concurrently utilized to measure the gait parameters of the subjects as the ground truth. The reliability of the parameters extracted by the radar was validated through the application of the Wilcoxon test, the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) value, and Bland-Altman plots. The average errors of the gait parameters in the time, range, and velocity dimensions were less than 0.004 s, 0.002 m, and 0.045 m/s, respectively. This non-contact radar modality promises to be employable for gait monitoring and analysis of the elderly at home.

To achieve non-contact measurement of human heart rate and improve its accuracy, this paper proposes a method for measuring human heart rate based on multi-channel radar data fusion. The radar data were firstly extracted by human body position identification, phase extraction and unwinding, phase difference, band-pass filtering optimized by power spectrum entropy, and fast independent component analysis for each channel data. After overlaying and fusing the four-channel data, the heartbeat signal was separated using frost-optimized variational modal decomposition. Finally, a chirp Z-transform was introduced for heart rate estimation. After validation with 40 sets of data, the average root mean square error of the proposed method was 2.35 beats per minute, with an average error rate of 2.39%, a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.97, a confidence interval of [-4.78, 4.78] beats per minute, and a consistency error of -0.04. The experimental results show that the proposed measurement method performs well in terms of accuracy, correlation, and consistency, enabling precise measurement of human heart rate.

Due to rapid technological innovations, the automated monitoring of insect assemblages comes within reach. However, this continuous innovation endangers the methodological continuity needed for calculating reliable biodiversity trends in the future. Maintaining methodological continuity over prolonged periods of time is not trivial, since technology improves, reference libraries grow and both the hard- and software used now may no longer be available in the future. Moreover, because data on many species are collected at the same time, there will be no simple way of calibrating the outputs of old and new devices. To ensure that reliable long-term biodiversity trends can be calculated using the collected data, I make four recommendations: (1) Construct devices to last for decades, and have a five-year overlap period when devices are replaced. (2) Construct new devices to resemble the old ones, especially when some kind of attractant (e.g. light) is used. Keep extremely detailed metadata on collection, detection and identification methods, including attractants, to enable this. (3) Store the raw data (sounds, images, DNA extracts, radar/lidar detections) for future reprocessing with updated classification systems. (4) Enable forward and backward compatibility of the processed data, for example by in-silico data 'degradation' to match the older data quality. In the current biodiversity crisis, populations of many species have alarmingly declined, and insects are no exception to this general trend. Biodiversity monitoring has become an essential asset to detect biodiversity change but remains patchy and challenging for organisms that are small, inconspicuous or make (nocturnal) long-distance movements. Radars are powerful remote-sensing tools that can provide detailed information on intensity, timing, altitude and spatial scale of aerial movements and might therefore be particularly suited for monitoring aerial insects and their movements. Importantly, they can contribute to several essential biodiversity variables (EBVs) within a harmonized observation system. We review existing research using small-scale biological and weather surveillance radars for insect monitoring and outline how the derived measures and quantities can contribute to the EBVs 'species population', 'species traits', 'community composition' and 'ecosystem function'. Furthermore, we synthesize how ongoing and future methodological, analytical and technological advancements will greatly expand the use of radar for insect biodiversity monitoring and beyond. Owing to their long-term and regional-to-large-scale deployment, radar-based approaches can be a powerful asset in the biodiversity monitoring toolbox whose potential has yet to be fully tapped. Concerns about perceived widespread declines in insect numbers have led to recognition of a requirement for long-term monitoring of insect biodiversity. Here we examine whether an existing, radar-based, insect monitoring system developed for research on insect migration could be adapted to this role. The radar detects individual larger (greater than 10 mg) insects flying at heights of 150-2550 m and estimates their size and mass. It operates automatically and almost continuously through both day and night. Accumulation of data over a 'half-month' (approx. 15 days) averages out weather effects and broadens the source area of the wind-borne observation sample. Insect counts are scaled or interpolated to compensate for missed observations; adjustment for variation of detectability with range and insect size is also possible. Size distributions for individual days and nights exhibit distinct peaks, representing different insect types, and Simpson and Shannon-Wiener indices of biodiversity are calculated from these. Half-month count, biomass and index statistics exhibit variations associated with the annual cycle and year to year changes that can be attributed to drought and periods of high rainfall. While species-based biodiversity measures cannot be provided, the radar's capacity to estimate insect biomass over a wide area indicates utility for tracking insect population sizes. Radar networks hold great promise for monitoring population trends of migrating insects. However, it is important to elucidate the nature of responses to environmental cues. We use data from a mini-network of vertical-looking entomological radars in the southern UK to investigate changes in nightly abundance, flight altitude and behaviour of insect migrants, in relation to meteorological and celestial conditions. Abundance of migrants showed positive relationships with air temperature, indicating that this is the single most important variable influencing the decision to initiate migration. In addition, there was a small but significant effect of moonlight illumination, with more insects migrating on full moon nights. While the effect of nocturnal illumination levels on abundance was relatively minor, there was a stronger effect on the insects' ability to orientate close to downwind: flight headings were more tightly clustered on nights when the moon was bright and when cloud cover was sparse. This indicates that nocturnal illumination is important for the navigational mechanisms used by nocturnal insect migrants. Further, our results clearly show that environmental conditions such as air temperature and light levels must be considered if long-term radar datasets are to be used to assess changing population trends of migrants. Millimeter-wave radar-based identification technology has a wide range of applications in persistent identity verification, covering areas such as security production, healthcare, and personalized smart consumption systems. It has received extensive attention from the academic community due to its advantages of being non-invasive, environmentally insensitive and privacy-preserving. Existing identification algorithms mainly rely on a single signal, such as breathing or heartbeat. The reliability and accuracy of these algorithms are limited due to the high similarity of breathing patterns and the low signal-to-noise ratio of heartbeat signals. To address the above issues, this paper proposes an algorithm for multimodal fusion for identity recognition. This algorithm extracts and fuses features derived from phase signals, respiratory signals, and heartbeat signals for identity recognition purposes. The spatial features of signals with different modes are first extracted by the residual network (ResNet), after which these features are fused with a spatial-channel attention fusion module. On this basis, the temporal features are further extracted with a time series-based self-attention mechanism. Finally, the feature vectors of the user's vital sign modality are obtained to perform identity recognition. This method makes full use of the correlation and complementarity between different modal signals to improve the accuracy and reliability of identification. Simulation experiments show that the algorithm identity recognition proposed in this paper achieves an accuracy of 94.26% on a 20-subject self-test dataset, which is much higher than that of the traditional algorithm, which is about 85%.

Heart rate (HR) and respiration rate (RR) play an important role in the study of complex behaviors and their physiological correlations in non-human primates (NHPs). However, collecting HR and RR information is often challenging, involving either invasive implants or tedious behavioral training, and there are currently few established simple and non-invasive techniques for HR and RR measurement in NHPs owing to their stress response or indocility. In this study, we employed a frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar to design a novel contactless HR and RR monitoring system. The designed system can estimate HR and RR in real time by placing the FMCW radar on the cage and facing the chest of both awake and anesthetized macaques, the NHP investigated in this study. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms existing methods, with averaged absolute errors between the reference monitor and radar estimates of 0.77 beats per minute (bpm) and 1.29 respirations per minute (rpm) for HR and RR, respectively. In summary, we believe that the proposed non-invasive and contactless estimation method could be generalized as a HR and RR monitoring tool for NHPs. Furthermore, after modifying the radar signal-processing algorithms, it also shows promise for applications in other experimental animals for animal welfare, behavioral, neurological, and ethological research., (© 2024. This paper presents the results of bats detected with marine radar and their validation with acoustic detectors in the vicinity of a wind turbine with a hub height of 120 m. Bat detectors are widely used by researchers, even though the common acoustic detectors can cover only a relatively small volume. In contrast, radar technology can overcome this shortcoming by offering a large detection volume, fully covering the rotor-swept areas of modern wind turbines. Our study focused on the common noctule bats (Nyctalus noctula). The measurement setup consisted of a portable X-band pulse radar with a modified radar antenna, a clutter shielding fence, and an acoustic bat detector installed in the wind turbine's nacelle. The radar's detection range was evaluated using an analytical simulation model. We developed a methodology based on a strict set of criteria for selecting suitable radar data, acoustic data and identified bat tracks. By applying this methodology, the study data was limited to time intervals with an average duration of 48 s, which is equal to approximately 20 radar images. For these time intervals, 323 bat tracks were identified. The most common bat speed was extracted to be between 9 and 10 m/s, matching the values found in the literature. Of the 323 identified bat tracks passed within 80 m of the acoustic detector, 32% had the potential to be associated with bat calls due to their timing, directionality, and distance to the acoustic bat detector. The remaining 68% passed within the studied radar detection volume but out of the detection volume of the acoustic bat detector. A comparison of recorded radar echoes with the expected simulated values indicated that the in-flight radar cross-section of recorded common noctule bats was mostly between 1.0 and 5.0 cm2, which is consistent with the values found in the literature for similar sized wildlife., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist., (Copyright: © 2024 Krapivnitckaia et al. Breathing temporarily pauses during swallowing, and the occurrence of inspiration before and after these pauses may increase the likelihood of aspiration, a serious health problem in older adults. Therefore, the automatic detection of these pauses without constraints is important. We propose methods for measuring respiratory movements during swallowing using millimeter wave radar to detect these pauses. The experiment involved 20 healthy adult participants. The results showed a correlation of 0.71 with the measurement data obtained from a band-type sensor used as a reference, demonstrating the potential to measure chest movements associated with respiration using a non-contact method. Additionally, temporary respiratory pauses caused by swallowing were confirmed by the measured data. Furthermore, using machine learning, the presence of respiring alone was detected with an accuracy of 88.5%, which is higher than that reported in previous studies. Respiring and temporary respiratory pauses caused by swallowing were also detected, with a macro-averaged F1 score of 66.4%. Although there is room for improvement in temporary pause detection, this study demonstrates the potential for measuring respiratory movements during swallowing using millimeter wave radar and a machine learning method.

Driving while drowsy poses significant risks, including reduced cognitive function and the potential for accidents, which can lead to severe consequences such as trauma, economic losses, injuries, or death. The use of artificial intelligence can enable effective detection of driver drowsiness, helping to prevent accidents and enhance driver performance. This research aims to address the crucial need for real-time and accurate drowsiness detection to mitigate the impact of fatigue-related accidents. Leveraging ultra-wideband radar data collected over five minutes, the dataset was segmented into one-minute chunks and transformed into grayscale images. Spatial features are retrieved from the images using a two-dimensional Convolutional Neural Network. Following that, these features were used to train and test multiple machine learning classifiers. The ensemble classifier RF-XGB-SVM, which combines Random Forest, XGBoost, and Support Vector Machine using a hard voting criterion, performed admirably with an accuracy of 96.6%. Additionally, the proposed approach was validated with a robust k-fold score of 97% and a standard deviation of 0.018, demonstrating significant results. The dataset is augmented using Generative Adversarial Networks, resulting in improved accuracies for all models. Among them, the RF-XGB-SVM model outperformed the rest with an accuracy score of 99.58%.

Current methods for fall risk assessment rely on Quantitative Gait Analysis (QGA) using costly optical tracking systems, which are often only available at specialized laboratories that may not be easily accessible to rural communities. Radar placed in a home or assisted living facility can acquire continuous ambulatory recordings over extended durations of a subject's natural gait and activity. Thus, radar-based QGA has the potential to capture day-to-day variations in gait, is time efficient and removes the burden for the subject to come to a clinic, providing a more realistic picture of older adults' mobility. Although there has been research on gait-related health monitoring, most of this work focuses on classification-based methods, while only a few consider gait parameter estimation. On the one hand, metrics that are accurately and easily computable from radar data have not been demonstrated to have an established correlation with fall risk or other medical conditions; on the other hand, the accuracy of radar-based estimates of gait parameters that are well-accepted by the medical community as indicators of fall risk have not been adequately validated. This paper provides an overview of emerging radar-based techniques for gait parameter estimation, especially with emphasis on those relevant to fall risk. A pilot study that compares the accuracy of estimating gait parameters from different radar data representations - in particular, the micro-Doppler signature and skeletal point estimates - is conducted based on validation against an 8-camera, marker-based optical tracking system. Cardiovascular diagnostics relies heavily on the ECG (ECG), which reveals significant information about heart rhythm and function. Despite their significance, traditional ECG measures employing electrodes have limitations. As a result of extended electrode attachments, patients may experience skin irritation or pain, and motion artifacts may interfere with signal accuracy. Additionally, ECG monitoring usually requires highly trained professionals and specialized equipment, which increases the treatment's complexity and cost. In critical care scenarios, such as continuous monitoring of hospitalized patients, wearable sensors for collecting ECG data may be difficult to use. Although there are issues with ECG, it remains a valuable tool for diagnosing and monitoring cardiac disorders due to its non-invasive nature and the detailed information it provides about the heart. The goal of this study is to present an innovative method for generating continuous ECG waveforms from non-contact radar data by using Deep Learning. The method can eliminate the need for invasive or wearable biosensors and expensive equipment to collect ECGs. In this paper, we propose the MultiResLinkNet, a one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D CNN) model for generating ECG signals from radar waveforms. With the help of a publicly accessible radar benchmark dataset, an end-to-end DL architecture is trained and assessed. There are six ports of raw radar data in this dataset, along with ground truth physiological signals collected from 30 participants in five distinct scenarios: Resting, Valsalva, Apnea, Tilt-up, and Tilt-down. By using strong temporal and spectral measurements, we assessed our proposed framework's ability to convert ECG data from Radar signals in three distinct scenarios, namely Resting, Valsalva, and Apnea (RVA). ECG segmentation performed better by MultiResLinkNet than by state-of-the-art networks in both combined and individual cases. As a result of the simulations, the resting, valsalva, and RVA scenarios showed the highest average temporal values, respectively: 66.09523 ± 19.33, 60.13625 ± 21.92, and 61.86265 ± 21.37. In addition, it exhibited the highest spectral correlation values (82.4388 ± 18.42 (Resting), 77.05186 ± 23.26 (Valsalva), 74.65785 ± 23.17 (Apnea), and 79.96201 ± 20.82 (RVA)), along with minimal temporal and spectral errors in almost every case. The qualitative evaluation revealed strong similarities between generated and actual ECG waveforms. Background: Wire-guided localization has been the mainstay of localization techniques for non-palpable breast and axillary lesions prior to excision. Evidence is still growing for relatively newer localization technologies. This study evaluated the efficacy of the wireless localization technology, SCOUT®, for both breast and axillary surgery., Methods: Data were extracted from a prospective database (2021-2023) of consecutive patients undergoing wide local excision, excisional biopsy, targeted axillary dissection, or axillary lymph node dissection with SCOUT at a high-volume tertiary centre. Rates of successful reflector placement, intraoperative lesion localization, and reflector retrieval were evaluated. A survey of surgeon-reported ease of lesion localization and reflector retrieval was also evaluated., Clinical Trial Registration: ACTRN386751., Results: One-hundred-ninety-five reflectors were deployed in 172 patients. Median interval between deployment and surgery was 3 days (range 1-20) and mean distance from reflector to lesion was 3.2 mm (standard deviation, SD 3.1). Rate of successful localization and reflector retrieval was 100% for both breast and axillary procedures. Mean operating time was 65.8 min (SD 33). None of the reflectors migrated. No reflector deployment or localization-related complications occurred. Ninety-eight percent of surgeons were satisfied with ease of localization for the first half of cases., Conclusion: SCOUT is an accurate and reliable method to localize and excise both breast and axillary lesions, and it may overcome some of the limitations of wire-guided localization., (© 2024 The Authors. Seabirds interact with fishing vessels to consume fishing discards and baits, sometimes resulting in incidental capture (bycatch) and the death of the bird, which has clear conservation implications. To understand seabird-fishery interactions at large spatiotemporal scales, researchers are increasing their use of simultaneous seabird and fishing vessel tracking. However, vessel tracking data can contain gaps due to technical problems, illicit manipulation, or lack of adoption of tracking monitoring systems. These gaps might lead to underestimating the fishing effort and bycatch rates and jeopardize the effectiveness of marine conservation. We deployed bird-borne radar detector tags capable of recording radar signals from vessels. We placed tags on 88 shearwaters (Calonectris diomedea, Calonectris borealis, and Calonectris edwardsii) that forage in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea and the Canary Current Large Marine Ecosystem. We modeled vessel radar detections registered by the tags in relation to gridded automatic identification system (AIS) vessel tracking data to examine the spatiotemporal dynamics of seabird-vessel interactions and identify unreported fishing activity areas. Our models showed a moderate fit (area under the curve >0.7) to vessel tracking data, indicating a strong association of shearwaters to fishing vessels in major fishing grounds. Although in high-marine-traffic regions, radar detections were also driven by nonfishing vessels. The tags registered the presence of potential unregulated and unreported fishing vessels in West African waters, where merchant shipping is unusual but fishing activity is intense. Overall, bird-borne radar detectors showed areas and periods when the association of seabirds with legal and illegal fishing vessels was high. Vital sign monitoring is dominated by precise but costly contact-based sensors. Contactless devices such as radars provide a promising alternative. In this article, the effects of lateral radar positions on breathing and heartbeat extraction are evaluated based on a sleep study. A lateral radar position is a radar placement from which multiple human body zones are mapped onto different radar range sections. These body zones can be used to extract breathing and heartbeat motions independently from one another via these different range sections. Radars were positioned above the bed as a conventional approach and on a bedside table as well as at the foot end of the bed as lateral positions. These positions were evaluated based on six nights of sleep collected from healthy volunteers with polysomnography (PSG) as a reference system. For breathing extraction, comparable results were observed for all three radar positions. For heartbeat extraction, a higher level of agreement between the radar foot end position and the PSG was found. An example of the distinction between thoracic and abdominal breathing using a lateral radar position is shown. Lateral radar positions could lead to a more detailed analysis of movements along the body, with the potential for diagnostic applications.

In case necessary precautions are not taken in surface mines, serious accidents and loss of life may occur, particularly due to large mass displacements. It is extremely important to identify the early warning signs of these displacements and take the necessary precautions. In this study, free medium-resolution satellite radar images from the European Space Agency's (ESA) C-band Sentinel-1A satellite and commercial high-resolution satellite radar images (SAR, Synthetic Aperture Radar) from the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt's (DLR) X-band TerraSAR-X satellite were obtained, and it was attempted to reveal the traceability and adequacy of monitoring of deformations and possible mass displacements in the dump site of an open-pit coal mine. The compatibility of the results obtained from the satellite radar data with two devices of Global Positioning System (GPS) which were installed in the field was evaluated. Furthermore, the velocity results in the Line Of Sight (LOS) direction and vertical deformation velocity results obtained with all three approaches (GPS/Sentinel-1A, GPS/TerraSAR-X, and Sentinel-1A/TerraSAR-X) were compared. It was observed that the results were statistically equal and the directions of movement were similar/compatible. The result of this study showed that deformations at mine sites can be monitored with sufficient accuracy for early warning with free Sentinel-1A satellite data, although the TerraSAR-X satellite offers a higher resolution., (© 2024. Frequency agility refers to the rapid variation of the carrier frequency of adjacent pulses, which is an effective radar active antijamming method against frequency spot jamming. Variation patterns of traditional pseudo-random frequency hopping methods are susceptible to analysis and decryption, rendering them ineffective against increasingly sophisticated jamming strategies. Although existing reinforcement learning-based methods can adaptively optimize frequency hopping strategies, they are limited in adapting to the diversity and dynamics of jamming strategies, resulting in poor performance in the face of complex unknown jamming strategies. This paper proposes an AK-MADDPG (Adaptive K-th order history-based Multi-Agent Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient) method for designing frequency hopping strategies in frequency agile radar. Signal pulses within a coherent processing interval are treated as agents, learning to optimize their hopping strategies in the case of unknown jamming strategies. Agents dynamically adjust their carrier frequencies to evade jamming and collaborate with others to enhance antijamming efficacy. This approach exploits cooperative relationships among the pulses, providing additional information for optimized frequency hopping strategies. In addition, an adaptive K-th order history method has been introduced into the algorithm to capture long-term dependencies in sequential data. Simulation results demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed method.

Introduction: The National Registry of Rare Kidney Diseases (RaDaR) collects data from people living with rare kidney diseases across the UK, and is the world's largest, rare kidney disease registry. We present the clinical demographics and renal function of 25,880 prevalent patients and sought evidence of bias in recruitment to RaDaR., Methods: RaDaR is linked with the UK Renal Registry (UKRR, with which all UK patients receiving kidney replacement therapy [KRT] are registered). We assessed ethnicity and socioeconomic status in the following: (i) prevalent RaDaR patients receiving KRT compared with patients with eligible rare disease diagnoses receiving KRT in the UKRR, (ii) patients recruited to RaDaR compared with all eligible unrecruited patients at 2 renal centers, and (iii) the age-stratified ethnicity distribution of RaDaR patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) was compared to that of the English census., Results: We found evidence of disparities in ethnicity and social deprivation in recruitment to RaDaR; however, these were not consistent across comparisons. Compared with either adults recruited to RaDaR or the English population, children recruited to RaDaR were more likely to be of Asian ethnicity (17.3% vs. 7.5%, P -value < 0.0001) and live in more socially deprived areas (30.3% vs. 17.3% in the most deprived Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) quintile, P -value < 0.0001)., Conclusion: We observed no evidence of systematic biases in recruitment of patients into RaDaR; however, the data provide empirical evidence of negative economic and social consequences (across all ethnicities) experienced by families with children affected by rare kidney diseases., (© 2024 International Society of Nephrology. Radio detection and ranging-based (radar) sensing offers unique opportunities for biomedical monitoring and can help overcome the limitations of currently established solutions. Due to its contactless and unobtrusive measurement principle, it can facilitate the longitudinal recording of human physiology and can help to bridge the gap from laboratory to real-world assessments. However, radar sensors typically yield complex and multidimensional data that are hard to interpret without domain expertise. Machine learning (ML) algorithms can be trained to extract meaningful information from radar data for medical experts, enhancing not only diagnostic capabilities but also contributing to advancements in disease prevention and treatment. However, until now, the two aspects of radar-based data acquisition and ML-based data processing have mostly been addressed individually and not as part of a holistic and end-to-end data analysis pipeline. For this reason, we present a tutorial on radar-based ML applications for biomedical monitoring that equally emphasizes both dimensions. We highlight the fundamentals of radar and ML theory, data acquisition and representation and outline categories of clinical relevance. Since the contactless and unobtrusive nature of radar-based sensing also raises novel ethical concerns regarding biomedical monitoring, we additionally present a discussion that carefully addresses the ethical aspects of this novel technology, particularly regarding data privacy, ownership, and potential biases in ML algorithms., Competing Interests: The authors declare that they have no commercial or financial relationships that could be construed as a potential conflict of interest., (© 2024 The Authors.)
