Aims: This study was designed to analyse the prevalence of class 1 and class 2 integron integrase genes among antibiotic-resistant coliform bacteria isolated from paper currency circulating in Pakistan., Methods and Results: A total of 500 individual currency notes were collected from different food vending sites at Lahore, Pakistan. Bacterial population were identified by biochemical and PCR techniques. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed by disc diffusion assay. The highest bacterial population on currency was found from street vendors and butcher shops. Escherichia coli was found to be the most prevalent coliform bacteria followed by Klebsiella sp. and Enterobacter sp. PCR amplification of antimicrobial resistance gene showed the presence of ampC, bla TEM , bla NDM-1 , qnrA, tet(A) and tet(B) genes among coliform isolates. A total of 47 integron integrase bearing strains of coliform bacteria were analysed. Sequence analysis showed the presence of dfrA1-aadA1, dfrA1, dfrA5, dfrA7, aadA1, aadA4 cassette arrays in class 1 integron and dfrA1-sat2-aadA1 in class 2 integrase genes., Conclusion: Circulating currency was heavily contaminated with antimicrobial-resistant coliform bacteria bearing class 1 and class 2 integron integrase genes., Significance and Impact of the Study: This study describes a potential threat of severe bacterial infections due to improper hand hygiene and community sanitation when dealing with the currency notes., (© 2020 The Society for Applied Microbiology.)

This study focuses on the risk of pollen allergy due to paper mulberry (Broussonetia papyrifera L.), an Asian invasive plant species now common in large parts of the world. Pollen plays a key role in the pathogenesis of respiratory allergic diseases, particularly rhinitis and asthma, and Islamabad, a major metropolitan city, is severely affected by allergy owing to B. papyrifera pollen. Due to its seasonality and other relationships with climatic variables, we used remote sensing to monitor the trend of pollen count. We also mapped the localisation of patients affected by pollen allergy using geographic information systems. The maximum likelihood algorithm was applied to SPOT-5 satellite imagery for land use/land cover classification. Temporal analysis of remotely sensed data revealed an increasing trend of paper mulberry density towards the southern and south-western part of Islamabad. Although not evident during rainfall, a clear positive correlation was found between patient count and pollen count. Field survey data and hotspot spatial analysis of allergy patients revealed that residents of Shakerperiyan and Lok Virsa areas (Sectors H-8, I-8, I-9, G-8, G-7 and G-6 in Islamabad) had more pronounced symptoms compared to residents of other sectors. The methodology adopted used in this study can be used to map the distribution of similar invasive species in other parts of the country.

Objective: To understand why skilled birth attendance-an acknowledged strategy for reducing maternal deaths-has been effective in some settings but is failing in Pakistan and to demonstrate the value of a theory-driven approach to evaluating implementation of maternal healthcare interventions., Design: Implementation research was conducted using an institutional ethnographic approach., Setting and Population: National programme and local community levels in Pakistan., Methods: Observations, focus group discussions, and in-depth interviews were conducted with 38 Community Midwives (CMWs), 20 policymakers, 45 healthcare providers and 136 community members. A critical policy document review was conducted. National and local level data were brought together., Main Outcomes: Alignment of programme theory with real-world practice., Results: Data revealed gaps between programme theory, assumptions and reality on the ground. The design of the programme failed to take into account: (1) the incongruity between the role of a midwife and dominant class and gendered norms that devalue such a role; (2) market and consumer behaviour that prevented CMWs from establishing private practices; (3) the complexity of public-private sector cooperation. Pakistan has an extensive public sector service delivery infrastructure consisting of a three tiered healthcare delivery system which includes Basic Health Units and Rural Health Centers forming the core of the primary health model, secondary care including first and second referral facilities providing acute, ambulatory and inpatient care through Tehsil Headquarter and District Headquarter hospitals and Tertiary Care comprising teaching hospitals. Notwithstanding, most people receive healthcare through private out-of-pocket payments made directly to the providers at the point of care. Recently, many attempts have been made to mainstream alternative arrangements of service delivery at various levels in order to bridge gaps in the present system of service delivery, albeit with limited success. As one of the core areas of reform-related interventions, the Gateway Paper makes a strong case for introducing change at two levels in order to obviate these issues. Firstly, at the level of hospitals the hospital sustainability reform process calls for major structural and financing adjustments, the development of appropriate policy frameworks, decentralizing hospital management to autonomous hospital boards and providing legal, managerial and fiscal autonomy to hospitals with appropriate community representation. At the primary healthcare level, a system for restructuring BHUs and RHCs has been supported--one that makes a case for appropriate checks and balances in order to ensure sustained improvements by redefining the roles of management, quality assurance, regulation and community oversight the latter through linkages with the devolution initiative. The Gateway Paper dovetails these alternative service delivery arrangements with parallel financing models.

As an opening of a dialogue on health reforms in Pakistan, the Gateway Paper presents a viewpoint on its proposed directions making a strong case for systems reforms, which need to scope beyond the healthcare system. Positioning the reform process to strengthen Pakistan's health policy cycle, the paper articulates a roadmap for a paradigm shift to achieve health outcomes in Pakistan with major structural reorganization within the health system. The proposed reform points in the four areas namely, reforms within the health sector, overarching measures, reconfiguration of health within an inter-sectoral scope and generating evidence for reforms. Reforms within the health sector focus on developing new models of service delivery and health financing which can enable the state to leverage the private sector outreach to deliver health-related public goods on the one hand and maximize the outreach of the State's health care delivery mechanisms through mainstreaming the role of the private sector on the other, albeit with safeguards. In addition, these call for strengthening the stewardship role to regulate these arrangements. The second area of reform focuses on overarching measures; these include developing frameworks for public-private partnerships which will enable the bringing together of organizations with the mandate to offer public goods and those that could facilitate this goal through the provision of resources, technical expertise or outreach; mainstreaming health into the country's social protection strategy in order to address issues of access and affordability for the poor and introducing civil service and public service reform focused on good governance, accountability, breakdown of institutional corruption which are critical to improving health outcomes. The third area of reform involves broadening health to its inter-sectoral scope, redefinition of objectives and targets within the health sector and garnering support from across the sectors to forester inter-sectoral action particularly with reference to the social determinant of health. The fourth area of reform focuses on generation of evidence around which several priority areas for health systems and policy research have been flagged. The Gateway Paper also underscores the need to develop norms and standards and points to institution mechanisms which need to be created to support the reform process.

As opposed to preventive healthcare where State mandated healthcare agencies play a pre-dominant role, a number of actors within the healthcare system other than the State play a role in providing personalized curative healthcare within the country. The sector constitutes a set of diverse group of doctors, nurses, pharmacists, traditional healers, drug venders as well as laboratory technicians, shopkeepers and unqualified practitioners. The services they produce include hospitals, nursing homes, maternity clinics, clinics run by a range of healthcare providers, diagnostic facilities and the sale of drugs from pharmacies and unqualified sellers. However, in some cases the distinction between public and private sector is not very clear as many public sector practitioners practice privately, legally and illegally. The sector is fragmented and characterized by a mixed ownership patterns, many types of providers and different systems of medicines. As a viewpoint on the configuration of a proposed health reform within Pakistan, the Gateway Paper flags key issues in relation to this sector. This encompasses lack of a formal regulatory mechanism for private sector providers and their delivery mechanisms, absence of a formal mechanism for building capacity and ensuring quality and absence accreditation arrangements for private hospitals and nursing homes. With this as a context recommendations focus on the nature of regulatory mechanisms and the institutional arrangements necessary support them with particular reference to quality and continuing medical. In regard to traditional medicines directions focus on exploring ways to harnessing the potential within the system in order to leverage its outreach and integrate it with the formal healthcare system. The Paper also stresses on the need to fully exploit the potential within behavioral change interventions in order improve health systems performance in Pakistan and to broaden its scope from lifestyle and prevention behaviors in a health education paradigm to impact the performance of all the actors in the health care system.

As an opening for a dialogue on health reforms in the country, the Gateway Paper places emphasis on strengthening the stewardship function of mandated State agencies in Pakistan with particular attention to two key areas. Firstly, greater emphasis on a stewardship role for the Ministry and departments of health in the context of inter-sectoral scope of health and secondly, a stronger role for the State agencies as regulators of healthcare within the country. The Gateway Paper envisages that the role of State agencies will become more critical as new models of financing health and delivering services are structured given that these entail regulation of private sector providers, providing oversight for ensuring a system for ongoing education and implementation of frameworks for public-private partnerships. The Gateway Paper refers to stewardship with reference to analysis and overview of health policies within the country, their relationship with evidence, their follow-up into planning and finally their implementation. The Paper also provides an insight into policies from a process-related as well as content and program related perspectives. In doing so a number of questions relating to the evidence and policy disconnect; issues at strategic and operational levels of planning, and governance-related impediments to program implementation have been discussed and a viewpoint articulated on an approach to addressing these challenges.

Health reforms must be firmly grounded in evidence, which in turn, should be utilized for appropriate modifications as the reforms get on their way to being implemented. It must be appreciated that the generation of evidence and its utilization must proceed in tandem with the reforms process - an approach which allows action accompanied by rigorous evaluation and up-gradation of programs and policies. The individual components of health reforms being proposed in the Gateway Paper, which presents a viewpoint on the configuration of health reform in Pakistan also mandate robust evaluation. This can allow the evaluation of competing concepts and can, therefore, guide the up-scaling of appropriate initiatives for broader systems-wide adoption. With this as a context, the Gateway Paper stresses on the need to: develop a comprehensive policy on research, bridge gaps in technical capacity within institutions, particularly those with research as a core mandate, broaden the base of budgetary and extra-budgetary research funding sources, foster appropriate incentives and rewards for research and mainstream an institutional mechanism for ethical oversight of research within the country. The Gateway Paper also underscores the need to develop a comprehensive, sustainable public health surveillance system and flags the legal requirements in this regard. It lays emphasis on the need to define priorities for epidemiological research in specific domains, particularly with reference to defining targets for preventive initiatives. In addition, strong recommendations have been made to institutionalize health policy and systems and operational research and to invest in capacity building of decision-makers in order to enable them to recognize the benefits of evidence based decision-making.

Pakistan currently principally uses three modes of financing health--taxation, out of pocket payments and donor contributions of which the latter is the least significant in terms of size. Less than 3.6% of the employees are covered under the social security scheme and there is a limited social protection mechanism, which collectively serves the health needs of 3.4% of the population. The main issues in health financing include low spending, lack of attention to alternate sources of financing and issues with fund mobilization and utilization. With respect to the first, health reforms proposed as part of the Gateway Paper make a strong case for promoting the reallocation of tax-based revenues and developing sustainable alternatives to low levels of public spending on health. With respect to alternative sources of health financing, the Gateway Paper lays stress on exploring policy options for private health insurance, broadening the base of Employees Social Security, creating a Federal Employees Social Security Programme, developing social health insurance within the framework of a broad-based social protection strategy, which scopes beyond the formally employed sector, establishing a widely inclusive safety net for the poor; mainstreaming philanthropic grants as a major source of health financing; developing a conducive tax configuration; generating greater corporate support for social sector causes within the framework of the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility and developing cost-sharing programmes, albeit with safeguards. The Gateway Paper regards efficient fund utilization a priority and lays stress on striking a balance between minimizing costs, controlling costs and using resources more efficiently and equitably--in other words, getting the best value for the money, on the one hand, and increasing the pool of available resources, on the other. Specific interventions such as the promotion of transparent financial administration, budgeting and cost controls and enhancing the capacity to overcome onerous financial management procedures and decentralizing decision-making are underscored as a priority as is the need for ensuring greater financial procedural clarity at the federal-provincial-district interface.

The Gateway Paper recognizes three system interfaces as being critical to the delivery of healthcare within Pakistan. These include the federal/provincial interface, the provincial-district interface and the public-private interface. A number of gaps in each area have been highlighted. At the federal-provincial interface lack of provincial ownership of federal initiatives, gaps in provincial counterpart arrangements, ambiguities about federal and provincial roles and responsibilities, conflicts over sharing of resources and gaps in understanding provincial requirements and poor coordination have been articulated as core issues. It is envisaged that the development of a broad based mechanism to develop a consensus on national policy positions, incorporation of appropriate guidance from the provinces, giving provinces an active participatory role in decision-making, garnering their support and clearly demarcating roles and responsibilities will obviate some of these issues as would the institutionalization of a federal-provincial coordinating mechanism to review actions at both levels with regards to progress on meeting stipulating goals. At a district level poor governance, limited capacity within the system, lag in granting full district level financial and administrative autonomy, and lack of operational clarity in the rules of business have contributed to the challenge. This is compounded by inadvertent centralization of some functions within the district, which political and administrative decentralization has paradoxically created and impediments to harnessing the role of communities. The clear delineation of these issues provides a substrate, which need to be at the heart of strategic reform within the context of the recent devolution initiative. At the public-private interface the absence of locally established principles, legislative frameworks, policies and operational strategies have been contributing to the adhoc nature of public-private engagement within the country, which leads to skewed powered relationships and lack of clarity in combined models of governance. Within this context the Gateway Paper makes a strong case for developing a set of norms and ethical principles, developing legislative and policy frameworks, and specific guidelines to steer such relationships with careful attention to accountability and sustainability related parameters.

Pakistan's public health interventions include a range of programs lead by the federal government with implementation arms at the provincial and district levels. Some of the programs are disease specific such as the respective programs on HIV/AIDS, Malaria, Tuberculosis, non-communicable diseases and Hepatitis; others are specific to life cycle domains such as in the case of maternal and child health whereas still others such as the National Program for Family Planning and Primary Healthcare and the National Expanded Program for Immunization are cross-cutting. Although these programs have contributed to improving health outcomes at intermediate outcomes level, a number of critical impediments to maximizing their impact have been noted. These include lack of integration, institutional impediments to the implementation of programs with particular reference to problems at the federal/provincial level and unrealized implications of federal programs at the provincial level are amongst the foremost. These have been further compounded by the addition of another service delivery tier in Pakistan's health system through the introduction of the devolution initiative. Furthermore, the unsustainable and under-utilized BHUs which serve as the service delivery base of these programs add to the problems. The Gateway Paper makes a number of recommendations to obviate these issues such as recommendations to integrate programs, strengthen surveillance systems, and with reference to obviating issues to implementation, emphasis is laid on decentralizing decision-making and central control, institutionalizing managerial audit, and prioritizing specific governance and management reforms. The Paper also stresses on the need for establishing a national coordination mechanism for fostering federal/provincial harmony and ensuring the creation of appropriate counterpart institutional arrangements in the provinces and districts. Recommendations on restructuring BHUs at a management, oversight, quality related and community participation level will play a vital role in determining the manner in which the efficiency of these public health programs can be enhanced.

Human capillary blood drawn by finger pricking was absorbed on Whatman no. 4 filter paper and tested for anti-Leishmania antibodies using the direct agglutination test (DAT). Over 1400 filter paper samples were collected from L. infantum endemic areas in northern Pakistan and compared with 569 serum samples obtained from the same area. Eleven filter paper samples (0.8%) gave positive results (antibody titre > or = 1:3200), compared with 8 serum samples (1.4%); the difference was not statistically significant (P = 0.35). The filter paper eluates compared well with their homologous sera, and were strongly correlated with respect to antibody titre (r = 0.7, P < 0.0001).

To compare the serum and uncentrifuged plasma for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) enzyme linked immuno sorbent assay (ELISA), ninety samples were analysed. The study was conducted so that in the field, where no amenities are available especially in countries like Pakistan, the separated but uncentrifuged plasma may be preserved by spotting on the filter paper for sero-epidemiological studies later. It was found that there was no statistically significant difference between the serum and uncentrifuged plasma values.

Introduction: The study explores the relationship between son preference and the desire for more children in the context of polygyny in Pakistan. It also highlights the link between household wealth status and son preference., Methods: Data analysis entails logistic regression and simple linear regression tests utilizing data from the Demographic and Health Survey 2017-2018. The sample size comprises 1796 women, belonging to polygynous families., Results: The findings show that at each parity, the desire for more children strengthens with an increasing number of girls than boys and it moderates with a balanced sex composition of children. The overall desire for more children slightly decreases with the increasing number of children, yet it is greater among women having fewer sons than daughters. Son preferences increase with increasing wealth., Conclusion: Women with more girls than boys continuously show a higher desire for more children. The efficiency of water distribution at primary, secondary, and tertiary levels in the Indus Basin Irrigation System (IBIS) has historically suffered due to poor design, suboptimal operation, and water scarcity. To address these issues, the system has been designed with ungated irrigation outlets to ensure equitable water allocation at secondary and tertiary levels. This research evaluates the hydraulic performance of three irrigation outlets: adjustable proportional module (APM), adjustable orifice semi-module (AOSM), and open flume (OF) using a physical model study. A distributary channel model with these outlets was constructed at the Centre of Excellence in Water Resources Engineering, where discharge coefficients (Cd) were calibrated and measured under various hydraulic and geometric conditions, including free and submerged flow conditions, and with adjustments to flow depths and outlet settings. The results showed variability in Cd values under free flow and submerged flow conditions with APM and AOSM ranging from 6.07 to 8.20 and 0.56 to 0.74, respectively, and OF between 2.46 and 4.31. Additionally, the behavior of outlet tampering on Cd values was also assessed under three scenarios: tampering with the half wing wall (1st), tampering with the full wing wall (2nd), and lowering the bed level downstream of the outlet (3rd). The increase in Cd values for APM and AOSM was + 10.84% and + 14.49% under 1st scenario, + 17.12% and + 22.36% under 2nd scenario, and + 24.25% and + 26.30% under 3rd scenario, respectively. The results reveal that even minor tampering with outlet structures can lead to significant deviations in performance, highlighting the importance of maintaining stringent control over outlet configurations to ensure equitable and efficient water distribution. There is a critical need for rigorous, site-specific calibration of irrigation outlets to optimize their performance under local conditions and redesigning outlet structures to minimize the impacts of tampering, thereby enhancing the overall sustainability of water use in large-scale irrigation systems. The findings from this study provide essential insights for irrigation engineers and policymakers tasked with upgrading and maintaining irrigation infrastructure. Over the past three decades, Pakistan's energy consumption has surged due to industrialization, population growth, and development activities. To meet the escalating energy demands, the country has primarily relied on thermal power projects, which are financially burdensome and environmentally detrimental, compared to hydropower projects. This reliance exposes Pakistan to global oil price shocks and environmental degradation. To address this dilemma, this empirical research investigates the impact of both non-energy factors (labour and capital) and energy-specific factors (renewable and non-renewable) on Pakistan's aggregate output, using annual time-series data from 1980 to 2021. The analysis employs the newly established Residual Augmented Least Square (RALS) cointegration test and the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) methodology to estimate the long-term cointegrating relationship among the examined variables. The empirical findings demonstrate that both non-energy and energy-specific factors positively and significantly influence Pakistan's long-term aggregate output. However, petroleum consumption exerts a positive but insignificant influence on Pakistan's long-term aggregate output. The study recommends diversifying the energy supply mix to include more hydroelectricity, non-hydroelectric renewables (mainly solar and wind), and natural gas. Specifically, transitioning from imported, expensive, and more greenhouse gas (GHG)-generating petroleum products to domestically produced natural gas could potentially reduce Pakistan's trade deficit and its vulnerability to global oil price shocks. Besides the economic benefits, shifting from non-renewable energy sources (specifically oil) to renewable energy would enhance Pakistan's image and increase its geopolitical influence over neighboring countries. This article examines how militarized regimes of narcotics and price control sustain unpalliated cancer pain in Pakistan. It shows how these regimes of control-reimagined as "regimes of pain"-render morphine, a cheap, effective opiate analgesic, scarce in hospitals. Meanwhile, heroin, morphine's illegal derivative, proliferates in illicit circuits. The article highlights a devastating consequence of the global wars against drugs and "terror": the consignment of cancer patients to agonizing end-of-life pain. Widening the analytic lens upon palliation beyond bodies and their clinical encounters, the article offers a geopolitics of palliation. It shows how narcovigilance targeting illicit drugs has the perverse effect of throttling morphine's licit supply. It shows further how unviably low price ceilings, purported to ensure a poor population's access to morphine, render it scarce on the official market. Water scarcity in arid regions poses significant livelihood challenges and necessitates proactive measures such as rainwater harvesting (RWH) systems. This study focuses on identifying RWH sites in Dera Ghazi Khan (DG Khan) district, which recently experienced severe water shortages. Given the difficulty of large-scale ground surveys, satellite remote sensing data and Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques were utilized. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) approach was employed for site selection, considering various criteria, including land use/land cover, precipitation, geological features, slope, and drainage. Landsat 8 OLI imagery, GPM satellite precipitation data, soil maps, and SRTM DEM were key inputs. Integrating these data layers in GIS facilitated the production of an RWH potential map for the region. The study identified 9 RWH check dams, 12 farm ponds, and 17 percolation tanks as suitable for mitigating water scarcity, particularly for irrigation and livestock consumption during dry periods. The research region was classified into four RWH zones based on suitability, with 9% deemed Very Good, 33% Good, 53% Poor, and 5% Very Poor for RWH projects. The generated suitability map is a valuable tool for hydrologists, decision-makers, and stakeholders in identifying RWH potential in arid regions, thereby ensuring water reliability, efficiency, and socio-economic considerations., (© 2024. According to a plethora of research and publications, the volume and amount of pollution are largely attributable to human-made emissions. Even during the recently ended Covid-19 outbreak, there was a notable decrease in global pollution, particularly in Pakistan's heavily populated cities. Due to the current situation, it is strategically important to safeguard the environment, and there are many criteria and predictors that should be used to encourage green behavior. This study examines green banking as a means of demonstrating ecologically responsible conduct in a developing nation. A survey questionnaire was used to collect information from 280 respondents via human contact and an internet platform. Software called SmartPLS3.0 was used to analyze the structural relationships between the study's variables. The results show that customers' adoption of green banking practices is statistically significantly influenced by their level of environmental consciousness and attitude. Similarly, green culture exhibits a substantial mediating influence between the independent variables and green behavior as well as a positive significant effect on green behavior. However, it is established that the consumer's apparent behavioral control is negligible. Metal pollution in water, soil, and vegetation is an emerging environmental issue. Therefore, this study investigated the abundance of heavy metals (HMs) within roots and shoots of native plant species i.e., Bromus pectinatus, Cynodon dactylon, Poa annua, Euphorbia heliscopa, Anagallis arvensis, and Stellaria media grown in the adjoining area of municipal wastewater channels of a Pakistani city of Abbottabad. HMs concentrations (mg L -1 ) in municipal wastewater were: chromium (Cr) (0.55) > nickel (Ni) (0.09) > lead (Pb) (0.07) > cadmium (Cd) (0.03). Accumulation of HMs in both roots and shoots of plant species varied as B. pectinatus > C. dactylon > P. annua > E. heliscopa > A. arvensis > S. media. Irrespective of the plant species, roots exhibited higher concentrations of HMs than shoots. Higher amount of Cr (131.70 mg kg -1 ) was detected in the roots of B. pectinatus and the lowest amount (81 mg kg -1 ) in A. arvensis, Highest Cd concentration was found in the shoot of B. pectinatus and the lowest in the E. heliscopa. The highest concentration of Ni was found in the roots of S. media (37.40 mg kg -1 ) and the shoot of C. dactylon (15.70 mg kg -1 ) whereas the lowest Ni concentration was achieved in the roots of A. arvensis (12.10 mg kg -1 ) and the shoot of E. heliscopa (5.90 mg kg -1 ). The concentration of HMs in individual plant species was less than 1000 mg kg -1 . Considering the higher values (> 1) of biological concentration factor (BCF), biological accumulation co-efficient (BAC), and translocation factor (TF), B. pectinatus and S. media species showed greater potential for HMs accumulation than other species. The fundamental consequences of global warming include an upsurge in the intensity and frequency of temperature extremes. This study provides an insight into historical trends and projected changes in extreme temperatures on annual and seasonal scales across "Balochistan, Pakistan". Historical trends are analyzed through the Mann Kendal test, and extreme temperatures (Tmax and Tmin) are evaluated using generalized extreme value (GEV) distribution for historical period (1991-2020) from the observational data and the two projected periods as near-future (2041-2070) and far-future (2071-2100) using a six-member bias-corrected ensemble of regional climate models (RCMs) projections from the coordinate regional downscaling experiment (CORDEX) based on the worst emission scenario (RCP8.5). The evaluation of historical temperature trends suggests that Tmax generally increase on yearly scale and give mixed signals on seasonal scale (winter, spring, summer, and autumn); however, Tmin trends gave mixed signals at both yearly and seasonal scale. Compared to the historical period, the return levels are generally expected to be higher for Tmax and Tmin during the both projection periods in the order as far-future > near-future > historical on yearly and seasonal basis; however, the changes in Tmin are more evident. Station-averaged anomalies of + 1.9 °C and + 3.6 °C were estimated in 100-year return levels for yearly Tmax for near-future and far-future, respectively, while the anomalies in Tmin were found to be + 3.5 °C and + 4.8 °C which suggest the intensified heatwaves but milder colder extreme in future. Recently, the trend of circular economy innovation (CEI) drive SMEs to initiate more sustainable practices to attain market competitiveness but rare attention has been paid in emerging economies. Hence, this study plans to explore the impacts of CEI on the triple bottom lines (TBL) efficiencies in the light of market competitiveness among the production SMEs in emerging economies. The study complied data by using a survey-based technique in Pakistan, Malaysia, and China. With a sample of 306 for each segment, data were evaluated with PLS-SEM to clarify results. The findings reveal that CEI has positive significant effects on the market competitiveness and TBL efficiencies among the production SMEs in emerging economies. The findings also clarify that market competitiveness mediates the relationship between CEI and the TBL efficiencies. The findings elaborate the theoretical foundations for environmental-based production SMEs to formulate more sustainable strategies in the light of CEI to gain market competitiveness. It also clarifies the understandings of policy makers and environmental regulators by providing a novel precursor to frame the environment-based TBL guidelines for SMEs. This research work contributes to the literature by examining the role of energy consumption in mitigating poverty via decomposing energy consumption into its positive and negative components, covering the period spanning from 1985 to 2017. To accomplish this objective, this study employs the nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) approach recently popularized by Shin et al., (2014). The NARDL approach is well-suited to our study becuase of its capability to delineate hidden asymmetries. The empirical findings reveal the prevalence of long-run associations among the studied variables. The outcomes show that an increase (decrease) in energy consumption combats (augments) poverty in Pakistan. The empirical findings underscore that the decreasing effect of energy consumption on poverty is found to be more promising than its increasing effect, both in the long and short run. Based on the empirical outcomes, we suggest that the policymakers, and other stakeholders should consider the asymmetric or nonlinear behavior of the studied variables for better poverty policy-making in Pakistan., (© 2023. Population in South Asia is increasing ever than a faster rate, subsequently; food security, climate change, and capital intensive agro farming techniques are the prevailing challenges in this region. This is a tri-country penal analysis, Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh, and the study covers the data throughout (1973-2020). This study has used modern farm input data besides demographic variables in the study. In this study, we use panel data set, ARDL (PMG) approach, autoregressive distributed lag model pooled mean group, which is an extensively dynamic modeling technique for heterogeneous data. The results of the study explore that transition in the demographic pattern in Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh is the real cause of low crop productivity and land intensification. Prcis: This study demonstrated that the compliance levels with International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) Guidelines for glaucoma eye care were low for all the elements in both public and private health care settings., Purpose: To determine the compliance with the ICO guidelines for glaucoma eye care among Pakistani ophthalmologists and to compare differences among ophthalmologists practicing in public and private health care settings., Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective chart review, and the records were reviewed according to ICO guidelines. The ICO recommends that each patient with glaucoma be evaluated for 19 items from 3 elements which are history, examination, and investigations. Mean compliance was recorded for each of the 3 elements. The compliance of each item was also checked and then a compared between the 2 settings, that is, public and private health care settings., Results: A total of 394 records were analyzed, with a mean age of 51.9±14.9 years and 232 (58.9%) male patients. Most records were from private settings 339 (86%), and primary open angle glaucoma 163 (41.4%) was the most common diagnosis. Compliance was low for all elements; history (31.8%), examination (61.3%), and investigation (6%). Pupil reaction differed significantly between the 2 groups ( P =0.001)., Conclusion: Pakistan's ophthalmologists, whether in public or private health care settings, lack knowledge of ICO guidelines for glaucoma eye care. Fish diversity and water quality are vital indicators of the health of freshwater ecosystems, however these systems are increasingly threatened by environmental changes and anthropogenic activities. This investigation aimed to assess the fish diversity and evaluate the physicochemical parameters of water at Ghazi Swabi near Tarbela Dam, River Indus, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, between March and June 2020. Monthly water samples were collected and analyzed for various physicochemical parameters such as temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), total dissolved solids (TDS), pH, turbidity, salinity, and concentrations of heavy metals including lead (Pb), copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), and mercury (Hg). Using various nets and traps the fish specimens were collected with the help of local fishermen. Morphometric and meristic analyses were conducted to identify the species, while systematic keys were used to remove misidentifications. A total of 110 fish specimens were collected, representing 7 species across 6 genera, 3 families, and 3 orders. The family Cyprinidae was the most abundant, with species including Puntius conchonius, Puntius waageni, Crossocheilus diplocheilus, Barilius modestus, and Aspidoparia morar. The Belonidae family was represented by Xenentodon cancila, and the Ambassidae family by Chanda nama. Physicochemical analysis showed that the water quality remained within permissible limits for aquatic life, however higher levels of certain heavy metals were detected, which may pose long-term risks. The study concluded that the fish diversity at Ghazi Swabi near Tarbela Dam reflects a moderately healthy ecosystem, the presence of heavy metals in the water raises concerns about future ecological health. Regular monitoring and mitigation efforts are recommended to preserve biodiversity and maintain water quality. Economic and social development, the state of the environment and a propensity for disasters are closely intertwined. Therefore, environmental policy integration (EPI) across development and disaster management (DM) policies and plans is important. Pakistan as a country is highly vulnerable to climate-induced environmental changes and associated disasters. In this paper, the extent to which its national environment and climate change policy, disaster risk reduction (DRR) policy as well as disaster management (DM) plans are aligned is established, based on a review of government documents and expert opinions. In this context, a particular emphasis is put on China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) that led the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor Plan (CPEC; 2017-2030). While environmental assessment (EA) is currently not conducted for any DM policies and plans, DM and EA are well integrated into provincial environmental protection acts, in national as well as most provincial DM plans. Lahore is the second major metropolitan city in Pakistan in terms of urban population and built-up area, making the city a more ideal place to form the surface urban heat island (SUHI) effects. In the last two decades, the considerable land-use conversion from a natural surface (vegetation) and permeable (waterbody) surface into an impervious (built-up area) surface has lead to an increase in land surface temperature (LST) in Lahore. The human thermal comfort (HTC) of the residents is also impacted by the higher LST. The present study uses multi-temporal Landsat (5&8) satellite imageries to examine the ecological and thermal conditions of Lahore between 2000 and 2020. The ecological and thermal conditions of Lahore are assessed by calculating the urban heat islands and UTFVI (urban thermal field variance index), based on LST data which quantitatively assessed the UHI effect and the quality of human life. The outcomes establish that the urban built-up area has increased by 18%, while urban vegetation, vacant land, and waterbody decreased by 13%, 4%, and 0.04%, respectively. In the last 20 years, the mean LST of the study region has risen by about 3.67 °C. The UHI intensity map shows intensification and a rise in surface temperature variation from 4.5 °C (2000) to 5.9 °C (2020). Furthermore, the finding shows that the ecological and thermal conditions are worse in construction sites, transition zones, and urban areas in comparison to nearby rural areas. The lower UTFVI was observed in dense vegetation cover areas while a hot spot of higher UTFVI was predominantly observed in the areas of transition zones and built-up area expansion. Those areas with higher hot spots are more vulnerable to the urban heat island effect. Food waste is one of the major sustainability issues that need to be addressed due to its negative impacts on the economy, environment, and food security. To develop food waste reduction policies on regional and global level, it is mandatory to have a clear understanding of the various factors prompting food waste at household level and the extent of the economic losses incurred by food waste. Reducing food waste can decrease household expenditure on food, freeing resources for health, education, and well-being. The current study was aimed to (1) examine the food waste behavior of the respondents and to (2) determine the level of monetary losses from food waste. To address these objectives, a questionnaire survey and sample of food waste generated during 24 h were collected from 51 households in Tehsil Kahror Pakka, District Lodhran, Punjab, Pakistan. The survey focus was on levels of food waste and respondents' knowledge and behaviors about food waste. Economic estimation of food waste was also done. In the survey, respondents from both high- and low-income households revealed that their fruit and vegetables (31%; 32%) and peel and scrap (53%; 48%) losses were higher while egg losses (4%; 4%) were lower among various food waste categories. Wanting to eat fresh food and having no time to save food were the reasons for food waste. The study area is a part of the Salt Range, where water quality is being deteriorated by natural and anthropogenic sources. This research integrates water quality assessment, arsenic enrichment, hydrogeochemical processes, groundwater recharge and carbon sources in aquifer. Total dissolved solid (TDS) contents in springs water, lake water and groundwater are in range of 681-847 mg/L, 2460-5051 mg/L and 513-7491 mg/L, respectively. The higher concentrations of magnesium and calcium in water bodies next to sodium are because of carbonates, sulfates, halite and silicates dissolution. The average concentrations of ions in groundwater are in order of HCO 3 -  > SO 4 2-  > Cl -  > Na +   > Mg 2+  > Ca 2+  > K +  > NO 3 - , virtually analogous to springs water, but different from lake water, categorized as poor quality and unfit for drinking purposes. Based on major ions hydrochemistry, NaCl and mixed Ca-Mg-Cl type hydrochemical facies are associated with concentration of arsenic (4.2-39.5 µg/L) in groundwater. Groundwater samples (70%) having arsenic concentration (11 ≤ As ≤ 39.5 µg/L) exceeded from World Health Organization (WHO) guideline (As ≤ 10 µg/L) in near neutral to slightly alkaline (6.7 ≤ pH ≤ 8.3), positive Eh(6 ≤ Eh ≤ 204 mV), signifying its oxic condition. Eh-pH diagrams for arsenic and iron indicate that 80% of groundwater for arsenic and iron were in compartments of HAsO 4 2- and Fe(OH) 3 , unveil oxic environment. Arsenic is moderately positive correlated with TDS, sodium, chloride, bicarbonate, nitrate, sulfate and weak negative with δ 13 C DIC in surface and groundwater, forecasting multiple sources of arsenic to aquifer. Stable isotopes of waters show recharge of groundwater from local rain and lake water. Over the past few decades, rapid or unplanned urbanization has been a major problem for developing countries, affecting the environment very badly. Pakistan is also the fifth most vulnerable country in terms of environmental impact from socio-economic activities. Mostly, this type of research has been conducted across countries. So, this study intends to analyze the role of urbanization in energy consumption, economic growth, trade, and technology in carbon emissions by evaluating data from 1985 to 2021 in the context of Pakistan. Autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) and non-linear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) with Granger causality assessment are employed to experimentally examine the variables' short and long-term associations. The ARDL result demonstrates that carbon dioxide (LCO 2 ) emissions are increased by energy consumption (LEC) and technology (LTech), while they are decreased by economic growth (LEG) and trade (LT). In NARDL, rising and falling urbanization (LU) lead to increased carbon emissions, but insignificantly. Ascending LEC leads to increased emissions, whereas descending LEC leads to reduced emissions in the context of short and long-term asymmetry. Yet, the opposite is true in the case of trade: a rise in LT decreases emissions significantly, whereas a fall in LT increases emissions insignificantly. This paper highlights the importance of international trade for a country facing these challenges. This means that LT is at the forefront of emission-reducing technology. A Granger causality analysis results show that LU and LTech are two critical determinants of LCO 2 emissions. Diagnostic tests ensure the model's reliability, ensuring that it could potentially be used without adverse intent. Due to global and regional climatic dynamics for a couple of decades, agricultural productivity, rural livelihood, and food security have been badly affected in Pakistan. This study was conducted in Punjab, Pakistan, to explore the farmers' understanding of the impacts of climate change, adaptation strategies, determinants, and benefits on agriculture using data from 1080 respondents. Perceived risks by the farmers in the rice-wheat cropping system and the cotton-wheat cropping system were weed infestation, seed rate augmented, low-quality seeds, infestation of crop diseases and pests, change of cropping pattern, increase of input use, decrease of cropping intensity and productivity, decreasing soil fertility, increasing irrigation frequency, and increase of harvesting time. To alleviate the adverse influences of climate change, the adaptation strategies used by farmers were management of crop and variety, soil and irrigation water, diversification of agriculture production systems and livelihood sources, management of fertilizer and farm operations time, spatial adaptation, access to risk reduction measures and financial assets, adoption of new technologies, institutional support, and indigenous knowledge. Moreover, the results of Binary Logistic Regression indicate that adaptation strategies are affected by different factors like age, education, household family size, off-farm income, remittances, credit access, information on climatic and natural hazards, information on weather forecasting, land acreage, the experience of growing crops and rearing of livestock, tenancy status, tube well ownership, livestock inventory, access to market information, agricultural extension services, and distance from agricultural input/output market. There is a significant difference between adapters and nonadapters. The risk management system may be created to protect crops against failures caused by extreme weather events. There is a need to develop crop varieties that are both high yielding and resistant to climate change. Moreover, cropping patterns should be revised to combat the effects of climate change. To enhance farmers' standard of living, it is necessary to provide adequate extension services and a more significant number of investment facilities. Workers in informal employment suffered significant out-of-pocket healthcare expenditures (OOPHEs) due to their low earnings and a lack of a social safety net or health insurance. There is little or no evidence of impoverishment caused by OOPHEs in the context of labor market categorization. Therefore, this study examines the economic burden of OOPHEs and its associated consequences on households, whose members are in informal employment. This study estimates the incidence of catastrophic health expenditures (CHEs) and impoverishment across the households in formal and informal employment and their key determinants in Pakistan by employing the data from the two rounds of the Household Integrated Economic Survey (2015-16, 2018-19). For measuring CHEs and impoverishment, the budget share and capacity-to-pay approaches are applied. Various thresholds are used to demonstrate the sensitivity of catastrophic measures. We found a higher incidence of catastrophic healthcare payments among the informal workers, that is, 4.03% and 7.11% for 2015-16 and 2018-19, respectively, at a 10% threshold, while at a 40% threshold, the incidence of CHEs is found to be 0.40% and 2.34% for 2015-16 and 2018-19, respectively. These OOPHEs caused 1.53% and 3.66% of households who are in informal employment to become impoverished, compared with their formal counterparts. The study demonstrates that the probability of incurring CHEs and becoming impoverished is high among informal workers, compared with their formal counterparts. This result has clear policy implications, in which to protect the informal workers, it is necessary to expand the insurance coverage, particularly during the COVID-19 response and recovery efforts., (© 2023 The Authors. The Hindukush, Karakorum, and Himalaya (HKH) mountains are often referred to as the "Third Pole" because of high snow, being a major freshwater resource and early indicator of climate change. Therefore, research on the dynamics of glacier changes and their relationship with climate and topographic variability is essential for sustainable water resource management and adaptation strategies in Pakistan. In this contribution, we delineated 187 glaciers and examined these glacier changes in the Shigar Basin from 1973 to 2020 using Corona, Landsat Operational Land Imager/Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus/Thematic Mapper/Multispectral Scanner System (OLI/ETM/TM/MSS), Alaska Satellite Facility (ASF), and Shuttle Radar Topography Mission Digital Elevation Model (SRTM DEM) imageries. The total glacier area decreased from 2796.31 ± 132 km 2 in 1973 to 2756.27 ± 63 km 2 in 2020 at an average rate of - 0.83 ± 0.03 km 2 yr -1 . Specifically, during the period of 1990-2000, these glaciers shrank most heavily at an average rate of - 2.372 ± 0.08 km 2 yr -1 . In contrast, an increased rate of 0.57 ± 0.02 km 2 yr -1 in total glacier area was observed during the recent decade (2010-2020). Moreover, the glaciers with gentle slopes retreated less heavily than the steep ones. There was reduction in glacier coverage and length for all slope classes, and a small reduction was observed with gentle slopes, while higher losses were observed on steep slope gradients. The transition of glaciers in the Shigar Basin may be attributed by the direct influence of glacier size and topographical characteristics. By comparing with climate records, our findings suggest that the overall reduction in glacier area from 1973 to 2020 was associated with declining precipitation (- 0.78 mmm/year) and rising temperature (0.045 °C/year) trends in the region, and glacier advances in recent decade (2010-2020) were likely to be driven by increased winter and autumn precipitation., (© 2023. This study aimed to determine the farmers' perceived impact of climate change on irrigation water and the adaptation measure adopted to mitigate its adverse effects. A binary logistic regression model was used to identified factors affecting the selection of adaptation measures. Partial Least Square-Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) was employed to compute the benefits of adaptation strategies. The study was conducted in two major cropping systems, i.e., the Cotton Wheat Cropping System (CWCS) and Rice Wheat Cropping System (RWCS) of Punjab, Pakistan, using primary data of 1080 farmers collected through a multistage sampling technique. Due to climate change there was deterioration in surface water and groundwater quality in CWCS than in RWCS. The farmer uses different adaptation strategies like water harvesting, crop diversification, increasing use of irrigation, laser land leveling to save water, making ridges, building a water harvesting scheme, changing irrigation time, high-efficiency irrigation system and water-saving technologies. Adaptation strategies used by farmer were affected by different socioeconomic, demographic and agronomic factors. Results of the binary logistic regression showed that age, farming experience, education, household size, farm size, tenancy status of owner, access to farm credit, information on weather forecasting, soil quality, tube well ownership, remittances, off-farm income, agricultural extension services provided for irrigation water, and information on climatic and natural hazards played a significant role in the selection of adaptation strategies for irrigation water. Results of PLS-SEM showed that adaptation strategies mitigate the adverse effects of climate change on irrigation water. Farmers' awareness regarding the impact of climatic variability on irrigation water should be enhanced. Availability of credit to farmers should be improved on easy terms to facilitate the adoption of interventions for better irrigation water management. Present climate change consists of global warming that is caused by the emission of greenhouse gases, generally carbon dioxide. The study examines the pollution haven, pollution halo, and environmental Kuznets curve for a number of Asian countries during the period of 1985 to 2020. Outcomes suggest that urbanization, gross domestic product per capita, energy consumption, and foreign direct investment inflow have positive effects, while gross domestic product square, foreign direct investment square, and tourism have negative effects on emissions of carbon dioxide. Furthermore, findings support the validity of the environmental Kuznets curve, pollution haven, and pollution halo hypothesis for the selected Asian countries. This study examined the effect of air pollution on the initial return of IPOs in Pakistan. Cross-sectional data were used to examine 102 listed IPOs on Pakistan Stock Exchange between 1996 and 2019. Ordinary least squares and quantile least squares were employed to examine the influence of air pollution on IPO initial returns. Lastly, stepwise regression was utilised for additional analysis. According to the findings, in the presence of high air pollution, IPO initial returns also increase due to higher uncertainty. The findings demonstrate that air pollution intensifies a company's information environment and financial uncertainty. Therefore, addressing environmental challenges is critical for both public health and capital formation. This study's findings will increase companies' awareness of the economic effect of air pollution, particularly in a country where air pollution is strictly regulated. This study examines the impact of several important macroeconomic variables such as quality of education, infrastructure development, foreign direct investment inflow, and green energy transitions on economic growth. We analyzed annual time series data sample for estimation of the above macroeconomic indicators during 1990 to 2020. We use nonlinear auto-regressive distributive lag model (NARDL) approach to detect the short-term and long-term effects of undermentioned macroeconomic variables on economic growth of Pakistan. The results primarily reveal that the quality education, foreign direct investment inflow, and infrastructure development are playing a significant positive role in the economic growth of Pakistan. Similarly, in short term the foreign direct investment inflow, infrastructure, and green energy transition coefficients are significantly positive related to sustainable development goals. However, the education found as unsubstantial as contributive as other variables. Moreover, the Granger causality and structural break estimations are employed to estimate the causal association between the selected parameters and unexpected change over the economy. The estimated outcomes find the unidirectional causality from education and green energy transition towards economic growth, where education is found within relation to infrastructure. Additionally, bidirectional causal relationship is found between FDI and infrastructure towards economic growth which shows that the increase in foreign investment has the potential to boost the economic growth. Global health metrics come into being in complex circumstances. Through ethnography that focuses closely on the forces driving uneven obstetric case reporting in a government hospital in northern Pakistan, this article challenges the integrity of the health care system documentation on which the state and non-state interventions and evaluations rely. Incomplete and skipped case records not only resulted from the time constraints posed by work on a busy maternity ward. They also helped vulnerable frontline providers disguise and avoid accountability for the aftermaths of the medical mismanagement and maltreatment made more likely by infrastructural scarcity and disarray. Yet the provider-side protections these tactics afforded came at patients' expense because they rendered error, wrongdoing, and iatrogenesis as invisible and unactionable. The sum of these reporting practices was "hospital paperworlds": defensively authored and aspirational datasets that conveyed desired rather than achieved outcomes, decontextualized risks and harms, and were too-rarely triangulated for their correlational significances or deficiencies. Pesticide residues have become an escalating concern in Pakistan, raising significant risks to both public health and the environment. This review overviews the current status of pesticide contamination in the country, with a specific focus on residue levels in relation to Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) and a comparative analysis with regional and global counterparts. Several studies reveal that 30% to 70% of tested food products, including fruits, vegetables, and animal-derived products, especially in Punjab and Sindh, exceed established MRLs. This level of contamination is considerably higher than in neighboring countries such as India, where MRL exceedance ranges from 20 to 30%, and Bangladesh, which reports lower levels due to stricter regulatory efforts. In comparison, developed countries, including those in the European Union and the United States, report less than 5% of food samples exceeding MRLs, often falling below 1% due to stringent safety standards. The high prevalence of pesticide residues in Pakistan poses severe health risks, including neurological disorders, reproductive problems, and cancer, particularly in vulnerable groups like children and pregnant women. Key factors contributing to these elevated pesticide levels include insufficient knowledge of safe pesticide use, the unregulated application of banned or expired products, improper safety protocols, and malfunctioning equipment. A prevailing reliance on pesticides as the sole pest control method further hinders the adoption of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies. In conclusion, pesticide residue levels in Pakistan are above permissible MRLs compared to regional and global standards, underscoring the need for urgent improvements in pesticide regulation, enforcement, and the promotion of sustainable pest control methods like IPM to better protect human health and the environment., (© 2024. Manufacturing industries are vital for economic development, but they cause significant environmental damages. As there are scarce research studies for this industrial sector from developing countries, this article reports a comprehensive environmental and economic analyses for cutlery manufacturing in Pakistan. SimaPro 9.5 was used as a modelling software tool, while ReCiPe 2016 methods were used to evaluate various midpoint and endpoint environmental impacts. Various economic indicators were used to evaluate the economic performance of different alternative scenarios. The results revealed that injection molding process, due to its energy-intensive nature caused the most environmental impacts as compared to other manufacturing processes. Global warming and terrestrial ecotoxicity were the most affected impact categories with values of 11.8 kg CO 2 eq and 12.0 kg 1,4-DCB, respectively. Meanwhile, at endpoint level, human health category was most damaged as compared to others. Based on technical process intervention and energy transition, four different alternative scenarios were developed. In comparison with baseline scenario, the alternative scenario with double-cavity mold resulted in a reduction of more than 30% for various impact categories. The other three alternatives were grounded on the use of solar energy (50% or 100%) and injection mold with double or single cavity. Overall, the alternative scenario with 50% solar energy and double-cavity mold was the best solution that showed more than 50% reduction in most of the impact categories, less than 3-year payback time, 2.12 million (Pakistani Rupees) net present value, and 36.3% of return on investment. This study clearly shows the importance of renewable energy resources and simple changes in process technology for improving sustainability performance. Improving the low productivity levels of native cattle breeds in smallholder farming systems is a pressing concern in Pakistan. Crossbreeding high milk-yielding holstein friesian (HF) breed with the adaptability and heat tolerance of Sahiwal cattle has resulted in offspring that are well-suited to local conditions and exhibit improved milk yield. The exploration of how desirable traits in crossbred dairy cattle are selected has not yet been investigated. This study aims to provide the first overview of the selective pressures on the genome of crossbred dairy cattle in Pakistan. A total of eighty-one crossbred, thirty-two HF and twenty-four Sahiwal cattle were genotyped, and additional SNP genotype data for HF and Sahiwal were collected from a public database to equate the sample size in each group. Within-breed selection signatures in crossbreds were investigated using the integrated haplotype score. Crossbreds were also compared to each of their parental breeds to discover between-population signatures of selection using two approaches: cross-population extended haplotype homozygosity and fixation index. We identified several overlapping genes associated with production, immunity, and adaptation traits, including U6, TMEM41B, B4GALT7, 5S&#95;rRNA, RBM27, POU4F3, NSD1, PRELID1, RGS14, SLC34A1, TMED9, B4GALT7, OR2AK3, OR2T16, OR2T60, OR2L3, and CTNNA1. Pakistan is among the South Asian countries mostly vulnerable to the negative health impacts of air pollution. In this context, the study aimed to analyze the spatiotemporal patterns of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) incidence and its relationship with air pollutants including aerosol absorbing index (AAI), carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide (SO2), and nitrogen dioxide. Spatial scan statistics were employed to identify temporal, spatial, and spatiotemporal clusters of COPD. Generalized linear regression (GLR) and random forest (RF) models were utilized to evaluate the linear and non-linear relationships between COPD and air pollutants for the years 2019 and 2020. The findings revealed three spatial clusters of COPD in the eastern and central regions, with a high-risk spatiotemporal cluster in the east. The GLR identified a weak linear relationship between the COPD and air pollutants with R 2 = 0.1 and weak autocorrelation with Moran's index = -0.09. The spatial outcome of RF model provided more accurate COPD predictions with improved R 2 of 0.8 and 0.9 in the respective years and a very low Moran's I = -0.02 showing a random residual distribution. The RF findings also suggested AAI and SO2 to be the most contributing predictors for the year 2019 and 2020. Background: Bovine leukocyte adhesion deficiency (BLAD), bovine citrullinemia (BC), and deficiency of Uridine monophosphate synthetase (DUMPS) are the common autosomal recessive disorders affecting the global dairy industry. BLAD leads to poor wound healing and recurrent infections. In BC, ammonia builds up leading to neurological disorders and death. DUMPS results in developmental abnormalities., Methodology: In this study, tetra-primer amplification refractory mutation system polymerase chain reaction (ARMS PCR) based diagnostic tests were optimized for BLAD, BC, and DUMPS. A total of 250 animals (58 indigenous and 192 Holstein Friesian (HF)) were screened from all across Pakistan. In addition to validation of ARMS-PCR results through Sanger sequencing, the protein modeling provided structural insights of the disease-associated reported SNPs. Pathway analysis illustrated gene functions under normal and mutated conditions. Furthermore, haplotype and phylogenetic analysis of ASS1 (Argininosuccinate synthetase) gene were performed on study samples and NCBI retrieved sequences., Results: The study's focus was to screen the herds for prevalence of carriers of genetic disorders, as they are the main source of disease dissemination. One animal was found carrier for BC, whereas no carriers were found for BLAD and DUMPS. The protein models corroborated the reported amino acid change in BLAD, and protein truncation in both BC and DUMPS proteins. SNPs found in NCBI retrieved sequences were either silent or missense and had no effect on protein structure. DNA network presented graphical illustration of haplotype interactions and phylogenetic analysis conferred evolutionary landscape of ASS1 gene. The combination of these approaches produced an in-depth genetic picture of BC in Pakistani cattle., Conclusion: The development of diagnostic tests and identification of the heterozygous BC sample underscores the significance of constant monitoring to avoid the unwanted dissemination of mutant alleles among Pakistani cattle, thereby promoting the general well-being and sustainability of the dairy sector., (© 2024. Groundwater depletion and water scarcity are pressing issues in water-limited regions worldwide, including Pakistan, where it ranks as the third-largest user of groundwater. Lahore, Pakistan, grapples with severe groundwater depletion due to factors like population growth and increased agricultural land use. This study aims to address the lack of comprehensive groundwater availability data in Lahore's semi-arid region by employing GIS techniques and remote sensing data. Various parameters, including Land Use and Land Cover (LULC), Rainfall, Drainage Density (DD), Water Depth, Soil Type, Slope, Population Density, Road Density, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Normalized Difference Built-Up Index (NDBI), Moisture Stress Index (MSI), Water Vegetation Water Index (WVWI), and Land Surface Temperature (LST), are considered. Thematic layers of these parameters are assigned different weights based on previous literature, reclassified, and superimposed in weighted overlay tool to develop a groundwater potential zones index map for Lahore. The groundwater recharge potential zones are categorized into five classes: Extremely Bad, Bad, Mediocre, Good, and Extremely Good. The groundwater potential zone index (GWPZI) map of Lahore reveals that the majority falls within the Bad to Mediocre recharge potential zones, covering 33% and 28% of the total land area in Lahore, respectively. Additionally, 14% of the total area falls under the category of Extremely Bad recharge potential zones, while Good to Extremely Good areas cover 19% and 6%, respectively. By providing policymakers and water supply authorities with valuable insights, this study underscores the significance of GIS techniques in groundwater management. Precipitation extremes have surged in frequency and duration in recent decades, significantly impacting various sectors, including agriculture, water resources, energy, and public health worldwide. Pakistan, being highly susceptible to climate change and extremes, has experienced adverse events in recent times, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive investigation into the relationship between precipitation extremes and crops production. This study focuses on assessing the association between precipitation extremes on crops production, with a particular emphasis on the Punjab province, a crucial region for the country's food production. The initial phase of the study involved exploring the associations between precipitation extremes and crops production for the duration of 1980-2014. Notably, certain precipitation extremes, such as maximum CDDs (consecutive dry days), R99p (extreme precipitation events), PRCPTOT (precipitation total) and SDII (simple daily intensity index) exhibited strong correlations with the production of key crops like wheat, rice, garlic, dates, moong, and masoor. In the subsequent step, four machine learning (ML) algorithms were trained and tested using observed daily climate data (including maximum and minimum temperatures and precipitation) alongside model reference data (1985-2014) as predictors. Gradient boosting machine (GBM) was selected for its superior performance and employed to project precipitation extremes for three distinct future periods (F1: 2025-2049, F2: 2050-2074, F3: 2075-2099) under the SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5 derived from the CMIP6 (Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6) archive. The projection results indicated an increasing and decreasing trend in CWDs (maximum consecutive wet days) and CDDs, respectively, at various meteorological stations. Furthermore, R10mm (the number of days with precipitation equal to or exceeding 10 mm) and R25mm displayed an overall increasing trend at most of the stations, though some exhibited a decreasing trend. These trends in precipitation extremes have potential consequences, including the risk of flash floods and damage to agriculture and infrastructure. Adversity within low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) poses severe threats to neurocognitive development, which can be partially mitigated by high-quality early family experiences. Specifically, maternal scaffolding and home stimulation can buffer cognitive development in LMIC, possibly by protecting underlying neural functioning. However, the association between family experiences and neural activity remains largely unexplored in LMIC contexts. This study explored the relation of early family experiences to later cognitive skills and absolute gamma power (21-45 Hz), a neural marker linked to higher-order cognitive skills. Drawing data from the PEDS trial, a longitudinal study in rural Pakistan, we examined maternal scaffolding at 24 months and home stimulation quality at 18 months as predictors of verbal IQ, executive functions, and absolute gamma at 48 months for 105 mother-child dyads (52 girls). Maternal scaffolding interacted with gender to predict absolute gamma power, such that higher maternal scaffolding was related to higher gamma more strongly for girls. Maternal scaffolding also interacted with absolute gamma to predict executive functions, such that higher gamma was related to better executive functions only when maternal scaffolding was average to high.
