We propose a trajectory-based quasi-classical method for approximating dynamics in condensed phase systems. Building upon the previously developed optimized mean trajectory approximation that has been used to compute linear and nonlinear spectra, we borrow some ideas from filtering trajectory methods to obtain a novel semiclassical method for the dynamical propagation of density matrices. This new approximation is tested rigorously against standard multistate electronic models, spin-boson models, and models of the Fenna-Matthews-Olson complex. For dissipative systems, the current method is significantly better or as good as many other semiclassical methods available, especially at low temperatures and for off-diagonal density matrix elements, whereas for scattering models, the current method bears similar limitations as mean-field propagation schemes. All results are tested against the numerically exact hierarchical equations of motion method. In floating catalyst chemical vapor deposition (FCCVD), high-aspect-ratio carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are produced in the gas phase at high number concentrations and undergo collision and agglomeration, eventually giving rise to a macroscale aerogel, enabling functional material forms such as fibers or mats to be obtained directly from the synthesis process. The self-assembly behavior between high-aspect-ratio CNTs dictates the resulting morphology at the nanoscale and subsequently the bulk properties of the CNT product. Reorientation between CNTs after collision is a critical step that results in bundle formation and precedes aerogel formation. However, it has been challenging to study the phenomenon with existing methods as it spans multiple time and length scales. In this study, a physics-based semi-analytical model was developed to study the gas-phase reorientation dynamics of high-aspect-ratio CNTs and their bundles, with ±10% accuracy compared with mesoscale molecular dynamics simulations, but at <0.1% the computational cost. It was revealed that the reorientation time scale is dictated by the interplay among the van der Waals potential, drag, and the geometric configuration of CNTs upon collision. This then allows the time scale of reorientation (i.e., bundle formation) to be compared with other gas-phase dynamics in a typical FCCVD reactor and offers new insights into the self-assembly behavior of 1D nanoparticles in the gas phase.

Changes in EEG have been reported in both major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD). Specifically, power changes in EEG alpha and theta frequency bands during rest and task are known in both disorders. This leaves open whether there are changes in yet another component of the electrophysiological EEG signal, namely phase-related processes that may allow for distinguishing MDD and BD. For that purpose, we investigate EEG-based spontaneous phase in the resting state of MDD, BD and healthy controls. Our main findings show: (i) decreased spontaneous phase variability in frontal theta of both MDD and BD compared to HC; (ii) decreased spontaneous phase variability in central-parietal alpha in MDD compared to both BD and HC; (iii) increased delays or lags of alpha phase cycles in MDD (but not in BD), which (iv) correlate with the decreased phase variability in MDD. Together, we show similar (decreased frontal theta variability) and distinct (decreased central-parietal alpha variability with increased lags or delays) findings in the spontaneous phase dynamics of MDD and BD. Real-time detection of intermediate species and final products at the surface and near-surface in interfacial solid-gas reactions is critical for an accurate understanding of heterogeneous reaction mechanisms. In this article, an experimental method that can simultaneously monitor the ultrafast dynamics at the surface and above the surface in photoinduced heterogeneous reactions is presented. This method relies on a combination of mass spectrometry and femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy. As a model system, the photoinduced reaction of methyl iodide on and above a cerium oxide surface is investigated. The species that are simultaneously detected from the surface and gas-phase present distinct features in the mass spectra, such as a sharp peak followed by an adjacent broad shoulder. The sharp peak is attributed to the species detected from the surface, while the broad shoulder is due to the detection of gas-phase species above the surface, as confirmed by multiple experiments. By monitoring the evolution of the sharp peak and broad shoulder as a function of the pump-probe time delay, transient signals are obtained that describe the ultrafast photoinduced reaction dynamics of methyl iodide on the surface and in the gas-phase. We propose a method to reconstruct the phase dynamics in rhythmical interacting systems from macroscopic responses to weak inputs by developing linear and nonlinear response theories, which predict the responses in a given system. By solving an inverse problem, the method infers an unknown system: the natural frequency distribution, the coupling function, and the time delay which is inevitable in real systems. In contrast to previous methods, our method requires neither strong invasiveness nor microscopic observations. We demonstrate that the method reconstructs two phase systems from observed responses accurately. The qualitative methodological advantages demonstrated by our quantitative numerical examinations suggest its broad applicability in various fields, including brain systems, which are often observed through macroscopic signals such as electroencephalograms and functional magnetic response imaging.

By means of the dispersive temporal interferometry technique, we carried out a real-time observation of the time separation and relative phase evolutions of two pulses toward harmonic mode-locking. During the separation stage of the buildup process, the time separation increases, while the relative phase decreases synchronously, and the largest change rates are 0.247 fs/r and -0.017 rad/r, respectively. Meanwhile, the two rates show a linear relation with the former 17.4 times larger than the latter. Moreover, a residual phase change rate of -3.89 × 10 -4  rad/r is observed in a steady non-uniform dual-soliton state, while such phase change is absent in a uniform four-soliton state. This study unveils the soliton interaction dynamics in lasers, which not only help to reduce timing jitter in multi-soliton mode-locking, but also bring insight to a temporal tweezing of femtosecond pulse.

Characterizing the brain's dynamic pattern of response to an input in electroencephalography (EEG) is not a trivial task due to the entanglement of the complex spontaneous brain activity. In this context, the brain's response can be defined as (1) the additional neural activity components generated after the input or (2) the changes in the ongoing spontaneous activities induced by the input. Moreover, the response can be manifested in multiple features. Three commonly studied examples of features are (1) transient temporal waveform, (2) time-frequency representation, and (3) phase dynamics. The most extensively used method of average event-related potentials (ERPs) captures the first one, while the latter two and other more complex features are attracting increasing attention. However, there has not been much work providing a systematic illustration and guidance for how to effectively exploit multifaceted features in neural cognitive research. Based on a visual oddball ERPs dataset with 200 participants, this work demonstrates how the information from the above-mentioned features are complementary to each other and how they can be integrated based on stereotypical neural-network-based machine learning approaches to better exploit neural dynamic information in basic and applied cognitive research.

We review an approach for reconstructing oscillatory networks' undirected and directed connectivity from data. The technique relies on inferring the phase dynamics model. The central assumption is that we observe the outputs of all network nodes. We distinguish between two cases. In the first one, the observed signals represent smooth oscillations, while in the second one, the data are pulse-like and can be viewed as point processes. For the first case, we discuss estimating the true phase from a scalar signal, exploiting the protophase-to-phase transformation. With the phases at hand, pairwise and triplet synchronization indices can characterize the undirected connectivity. Next, we demonstrate how to infer the general form of the coupling functions for two or three oscillators and how to use these functions to quantify the directional links. We proceed with a different treatment of networks with more than three nodes. We discuss the difference between the structural and effective phase connectivity that emerges due to high-order terms in the coupling functions. For the second case of point-process data, we use the instants of spikes to infer the phase dynamics model in the Winfree form directly. Preparation of neutral non-volatile molecules intact in the gas phase for mass spectrometry or chemical dynamics experiments remains a challenge for many classes of molecules. Here, we report the design and characterization of a fiber-coupled laser-based thermal desorption source capable of preparing intact neutral molecules at high molecular densities in the gas phase for use in velocity-map imaging experiments. Within this source, the sample is deposited onto a thin tantalum foil. Irradiation of the foil from the reverse side by a focused laser beam leads to highly localized heating of the sample, resulting in desorption of a plume of molecules into the gas phase. The fiber-coupled design simplifies the alignment of the desorption laser beam, and the ability to rotate the foil relative to the fixed laser beam allows the sample to be continually refreshed under vacuum. We use 118 nm photoionization of three test molecules-uracil, adenine, and phenylalanine-to characterize the source and to demonstrate various aspects of its performance. These include the dependence of the velocity-map imaging performance on the size of the interaction region and the dependence of the laser-induced desorption source emission on desorption laser power and heating time. Signal levels recorded in these measurements are comparable to those we typically obtain in similar experiments using a pulsed supersonic molecular beam, and we, therefore, believe that the source has considerable potential for use in a wide range of chemical dynamics and other experiments., (© 2023 Author(s). A comprehensive study of vortex phases and vortex dynamics is presented for a recently discovered high-temperature superconductor YH 6 with T c (onset) of 215 K under a pressure of 200 GPa. The thermal activation energy ( U 0 on magnetic field with a possible crossover at a field around 8-10 T. Furthermore, we have depicted the vortex phase transition from the vortex-glass to vortex-liquid state according to the vortex-glass theory. Finally, vortex phase diagram is constructed for the first time for superhydrides. Very high estimated values of flux flow barriers U 0 ∝ H α on magnetic field with a possible crossover at a field around 8-10 T. Furthermore, we have depicted the vortex phase transition from the vortex-glass to vortex-liquid state according to the vortex-glass theory. Finally, vortex phase diagram is constructed for the first time for superhydrides. Very high estimated values of flux flow barriers U 0 ( H ) = (1.5-7) × 10 4 K together with high crossover fields make YH 6 a rather outstanding superconductor as compared to most cuprates and iron-based systems. The Ginzburg number for YH 6 Gi = (3-7) × 10 -3 indicates that thermal fluctuations are not so strong and cannot broaden superconducting transitions in weak magnetic fields.

We experimentally investigate the stochastic phase dynamics of planar Josephson junctions (JJs) and superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) defined in epitaxial InAs/Al heterostructures, and characterized by a large ratio of Josephson energy to charging energy. We observe a crossover from a regime of macroscopic quantum tunneling to one of phase diffusion as a function of temperature, where the transition temperature T^{*} is gate-tunable. The switching probability distributions are shown to be consistent with a small shunt capacitance and moderate damping, resulting in a switching current which is a small fraction of the critical current. Phase locking between two JJs leads to a difference in switching current between that of a JJ measured in isolation and that of the same JJ measured in an asymmetric SQUID loop. In the case of the loop, T^{*} is also tuned by a magnetic flux.

Mixer-setters units are widely used in uranium purification processes. For efficient operations of mixer-settler units, it is essential to measure the hydrodynamics parameters of the different phases involved. The residence time distribution (RTD) measurement is commonly used method to estimate the hydrodynamics parameters of process reactors. In the present study, RTD of the aqueous phase was measured in different stages mixer-settler unit (mixers, settlers and mixer-settler units) used for stripping operation using Iodine-131 as a radiotracer. For the RTD measurements, radiotracer was injected as an impulse in aqueous phase feed line and its movement was monitored at different locations in the stripping unit using NaI(Tl) detectors. The mean residence times (MRTs) of the aqueous phase were estimated from measured RTD curves. For quantification of the degree of mixing, suitable flow models were proposed based on design and nature of the measured RTD curves and subsequently used for simulation. Based on the results of the RTD study, the mixing of aqueous phase was characterized and design of the stripping unit and its sub-units were validated. Nonlocally coupled oscillators with a phase lag self-organize into various patterns, such as global synchronization, the twisted state, and the chimera state. In this paper, we consider nonlocally coupled oscillators that move on a ring by randomly exchanging their positions with the neighbors and investigate the combined effects of phase lag and mobility on the collective phase dynamics. Spanning the whole range of phase lag and mobility, we show that mobility promotes synchronization for an attractive coupling, whereas it destroys coherence for a repulsive coupling. The transition behaviors are discussed in terms of the timescales of synchronization and diffusion of the oscillators. We also find a novel spatiotemporal pattern at the border between coherent and incoherent states.

The third-order response lies at the heart of simulating and interpreting nonlinear spectroscopies ranging from two-dimensional infrared (2D-IR) to 2D electronic (2D-ES), and 2D sum frequency generation (2D-SFG). The extra time and frequency dimensions in these spectroscopic techniques provide access to rich information on the electronic and vibrational states present, the coupling between them, and the resulting rates at which they exchange energy that are obscured in linear spectroscopy, particularly for condensed phase systems that usually contain many overlapping features. While the exact quantum expression for the third-order response is well established, it is incompatible with the methods that are practical for calculating the atomistic dynamics of large condensed phase systems. These methods, which include both classical mechanics and quantum dynamics methods that retain quantum statistical properties while obeying the symmetries of classical dynamics, such as LSC-IVR, centroid molecular dynamics, and Ring Polymer Molecular Dynamics (RPMD), naturally provide short-time approximations to the multi-time symmetrized Kubo transformed correlation function. Here, we show how the third-order response can be formulated in terms of equilibrium symmetrized Kubo transformed correlation functions. We demonstrate the utility and accuracy of our approach by showing how it can be used to obtain the third-order response of a series of model systems using both classical dynamics and RPMD. In particular, we show that this approach captures features such as anharmonically induced vertical splittings and peak shifts while providing a physically transparent framework for understanding multidimensional spectroscopies.

The study was carried out to evaluate the dynamics of monthly numbers of cases, deaths, tests and case fatality ratio worldwide during three phases of the COVID-19 pandemic. Material and methods: Twenty-three sets of databases, dated the 22nd of each month from January 2020 to November 2021, for 213 countries were collected from the Worldometer website. The number of cases, deaths, tests, case fatality ratio, infection fatality ratio, etc. were counted for various periods of time for each of the 213 countries, then the results related to different periods of time were compared. The analysis of main epidemiological parameters resulted in division of three phases of the global pandemic evolution. The first phase (23.01.20-22.07.20), the second phase (23.07.20-22.01.21) and the third phase (23.01.21-22.07.21) were different in terms of the number of tests performed, new cases and mortality due to COVID-19. By the end of second phase, the worldwide statistics indicated end of the pandemic, but the third phase was characterized by sudden rise in number of new cases and deaths. The most dramatic evolution of epidemic curve occurred in the countries where physicians had successfully confronted COVID-19 during the first two phases of the pandemic. Despite the decrease in the overall numbers deaths during the latest months analyzed, additional study is necessary to identify causes of new cases and deaths during the third phase of the pandemic. It can be suggested that preventive and therapeutic protocols should be changed from the 'standard' to 'personalized' types.

Presumably, there are several causes of negative evolution of the current pandemic, including over-reliance on polymerase chain reaction tests, application of non-specialized premises for quarantine and treatment, non-professional management, following therapeutic protocols applied in countries with high number of deaths, ignoring preventive treatment, and decreasing in mass and individual immunity. It can be suggested that the use of drugs modulating T-cell immunity is necessary, and preventive and therapeutic protocols should be changed from the 'standard' to 'personalized' types.

DNA supercoils are generated in genome regulation processes such as transcription and replication and provide mechanical feedback to such processes. Under tension, a DNA supercoil can present a coexistence state of plectonemic and stretched phases. Experiments have revealed the dynamic behaviors of plectonemes, e.g., diffusion, nucleation, and hopping. To represent these dynamics with conformational changes, we demonstrated first the fast dynamics on the DNA to reach torque equilibrium within the plectonemic and stretched phases, and then identified the two-phase boundaries as collective slow variables to describe the essential dynamics. According to the timescale separation demonstrated here, we developed a two-phase model on the dynamics of DNA supercoiling, which can capture physiologically relevant events across timescales of several orders of magnitudes. In this model, we systematically characterized the slow dynamics between the two phases and compared the numerical results with those from the DNA polymer physics-based worm-like chain model. The supercoiling dynamics, including the nucleation, diffusion, and hopping of plectonemes, have been well represented and reproduced, using the two-phase dynamic model, at trivial computational costs. Past research suggests that pitch height can influence the perceived tempo of speech and music, such that higher-pitched signals seem faster than lower-pitched ones. However, previous studies have analyzed perceived tempo across a relatively limited range of fundamental frequencies. To investigate whether this higher-equals-faster illusion generalizes across the wider range of human hearing, we conducted a series of five experiments. We asked participants to compare the tempo of repeating tones from six different octaves and with 15 different interonset intervals to a metronomic standard tempo. In Experiments 1-3, we observed an inverted U-shaped effect of pitch on perceived tempo, with the perceived tempo of piano tones peaking between A4 (440 Hz) and A5 (880 Hz) and decreasing at lower and higher frequencies. This bias was consistent across base tempos and was only slightly attenuated by synchronous tapping with the repeating tones. Experiment 4 tested synthetic complex tones to verify that this nonlinearity generalizes beyond the piano timbre and that it was not related to the presence of low-frequency mechanical noise present in our piano tones. Experiment 5 revealed that the decrease in perceived tempo at extremely high octaves can be abolished by exposing participants to only high-pitched tones. Together, our results suggest that perceived tempo depends more on the relative pitch within a context than on absolute pitch and that tempo biases may invert or taper off beyond a two-octave range. We relate this context-dependence to human vocal ranges and propose that illusory tempo effects are strongest within pitch ranges consistent with human vocalization., Competing Interests: Declarations. In this study, we employed femtosecond Raman-induced Kerr effect spectroscopy to analyze the concentration-dependent intermolecular dynamics in positively or negatively charged aromatics and their neutral analogous aromatics (imidazolium hydrochloride (ImHCl), imidazole (Im), sodium triazolide (NaTr), and triazole (Tr)) in aqueous solutions at 293 K. We also measured their liquid properties, such as density, viscosity, and surface tension, at 293 K, and compared them with their dynamic properties. Furthermore, we performed the quantum chemistry calculations of the target aromatics and some clusters to elucidate their optimized structures, interaction energies, charge populations, and Raman-active normal modes. We characterized the Kerr transients over 2 ps using a triexponential function. The results revealed that the aqueous solutions' intermediate and slow relaxation time constants were linearly proportional to the viscosities. The slopes of the time constants to the viscosity of the aqueous ImHCl solutions were steeper than those of the aqueous Im solutions, whereas the slopes of the aqueous NaTr solutions were milder than those of the aqueous Tr solutions. These findings indicated that the charge of the aromatics in the aqueous solutions affected the coupling parameter between the solute and solvent in the orientational dynamics with different ways. The first moment (M 1 ) of the low-frequency band (< 200 cm -1 ), coming from the intermolecular vibrations, in the difference spectra between the aqueous aromatic solutions and neat water shifted to the high-frequency region as the concentration increased. The M 1 slope to the concentration for the aqueous ImHCl solutions was steeper than that for the aqueous Im solutions. Conversely, the concentration dependence of M 1 for the aqueous NaTr solutions was similar to that for the aqueous Tr solutions. Modeling global net ecosystem exchange is essential to understanding and quantifying the complex interactions between the Earth's terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere. Emphasizing the inter-relatedness between the global net ecosystem exchange, global sea surface temperature, and atmospheric CO 2 levels, intuitively suggests that all three systems may exhibit collective environmental memory. Motivated by this, we explicitly identified a collective memory function and showed a similar non-Markovian stochastic behavior for these systems exhibiting superdiffusive behavior in short time intervals. We obtained the values of the memory parameter, μ , and the characteristic frequencies, ν , for global net ecosystem exchange (GNEE) ( μ = 0.94 ± 0.03 , ν = 0.67 ± 0.08 / m o . ), global sea surface temperature (GSST) ( μ = 0.68 ± 0.11 , ν = 0.30 ± 0.18 / m o . ), and atmospheric CO 2 ( μ = 0.78 ± 0.08 , ν = 0.66 ± 0.13 / w k . ). The values of the memory parameter are within the range, 0 < μ < 1 , and thus all three systems are in the superdiffusive regime. We emphasize, further, that these results were consistent with our previous analyses at the ecosystem level (i.e. Great Barrier Reef) suggesting scale invariance for these phenomena. The brain is a complex non-equilibrium system capable of expressing many different dynamics as well as the transitions between them. We hypothesized that the level of non-equilibrium can serve as a signature of a given brain state, which was quantified using the arrow of time (the level of irreversibility). Using this thermodynamic framework, the irreversibility of emergent cortical activity was quantified from local field potential recordings in male Lister-hooded rats at different anesthesia levels and during the sleep-wake cycle. This measure was carried out on five distinct brain states: slow-wave sleep, awake, deep anesthesia-slow waves, light anesthesia-slow waves, and microarousals. Low levels of irreversibility were associated with synchronous activity found both in deep anesthesia and slow-wave sleep states, suggesting that slow waves were the state closest to the thermodynamic equilibrium (maximum symmetry), thus requiring minimum energy. Higher levels of irreversibility were found when brain dynamics became more asynchronous, for example, in wakefulness. These changes were also reflected in the hierarchy of cortical dynamics across different cortical areas. The neural dynamics associated with different brain states were characterized by different degrees of irreversibility and hierarchy, also acting as markers of brain state transitions. Complex dynamical systems are often governed by equations containing many unknown parameters whose precise values may or may not be important for the system's dynamics. In particular, for chemical and biochemical systems, there may be some reactions or subsystems that are inessential to understanding the bifurcation structure and consequent behavior of a model, such as oscillations, multistationarity and patterning. Due to the size, complexity and parametric uncertainties of many (bio)chemical models, a dynamics-preserving reduction scheme that is able to isolate the necessary contributors to particular dynamical behaviors would be useful. In this contribution, we describe model reduction methods for mass-action (bio)chemical models based on the preservation of instability-generating subnetworks known as critical fragments. These methods focus on structural conditions for instabilities and so are parameter-independent. Heat dissipation is a natural consequence of operating any electronic system. In nearly all computing systems, such heat is usually minimized by design and cooling. Here, we show that the temporal dynamics of internally produced heat in electronic devices can be engineered to both encode information within a single device and process information across multiple devices. In our demonstration, electronic NbO x Mott neurons, integrated on a flexible organic substrate, exhibit 18 biomimetic neuronal behaviours and frequency-based nociception within a single component by exploiting both the thermal dynamics of the Mott transition and the dynamical thermal interactions with the organic substrate. Further, multiple interconnected Mott neurons spatiotemporally communicate purely via heat, which we use for graph optimization by consuming over 10 6 times less energy when compared with the best digital processors. This study explores a novel approach to enhancing cognitive proficiency by targeting neural mechanisms that facilitate science and math learning, especially mental rotation. The study specifically examines the relationship between upper alpha intensity and mental rotation skills. Although prior neurofeedback research for increasing upper alpha highlights this correlation, mostly with familiar objects, novel chemistry and math learning prompts envisioning unfamiliar objects which question the persistence of this correlation. This study revisits the upper alpha and mental rotation relationship in the context of unfamiliar objects with a single neurofeedback session and examines the efficiency of manual and automatic neurofeedback protocols. Results will provide a basis for integrating neurofeedback protocols into learning applications for enhanced learning. Our study encompassed three cohorts: Group 1 experienced an automatic neurofeedback protocol, Group 2 received a manual neurofeedback protocol, and the control group had no neurofeedback intervention. The experimental phases involved EEG measurement of individual upper alpha (frequency of maximal power + 2 Hz) intensity, mental rotation tasks featuring geometric and unfamiliar molecular stimuli, one neurofeedback session for applicable groups, post-treatment upper alpha level assessments, and a mental rotation retest. The neurofeedback groups exhibited increased levels of upper alpha power, which was correlated with improved response time in mental rotation, regardless of stimulus type, compared to the control group. Both neurofeedback protocols achieved comparable results. It is well known that the FitzHugh-Nagumo model is one of the simplified forms of the four-variable Hodgkin-Huxley model that can reflect most of the significant phenomena of nerve cell action potential. However, this model cannot capture the irregular action potentials of sufficiently large periods in a one-parameter family of solutions. Motivated by this, we propose a modified FitzHugh-Nagumo reaction-diffusion system by changing its recovery kinetics. First, we investigate the parameter regime to know the existence of the wavetrains. Second, we conceive the occurrence of Eckhaus bifurcations of solutions that divide the solution region into two parts. The essential spectra at different grid points explore the occurrence of bifurcations of the waves. We find that the wavetrains of sufficiently large periods cross the stability boundary. This characteristic phenomenon is absent in the standard FitzHugh-Nagumo model. Finally, we observe a reasonable agreement between the direct PDE simulations and the solutions in the traveling wave ODEs. Furthermore, the model exhibits spiral wave for monotone and non-monotone cases that agrees with the waves observed in cellular activity., (© 2022. In the quest for emerging in-sensor computing, materials that respond to optical stimuli in conjunction with non-volatile phase transition are highly desired for realizing bioinspired neuromorphic vision components. Here, we report a non-volatile multi-level control of VO 2 films by oxygen stoichiometry engineering under ultraviolet irradiation. Based on the reversible regulation of VO 2 films using ultraviolet irradiation and electrolyte gating, we demonstrate a proof-of-principle neuromorphic ultraviolet sensor with integrated sensing, memory, and processing functions at room temperature, and also prove its silicon compatible potential through the wafer-scale integration of a neuromorphic sensor array. The device displays linear weight update with optical writing because its metallic phase proportion increases almost linearly with the light dosage. Moreover, the artificial neural network consisting of this neuromorphic sensor can extract ultraviolet information from the surrounding environment, and significantly improve the recognition accuracy from 24% to 93%. Purpose: The Beer-Lambert law suggests that visual pigment optical density (OD) should be linearly related to the length of photoreceptor outer segments (POSs). Mammalian studies indicate that visual pigment concentration increases with POS length, but the nature of this relationship may vary due to factors such as visual pigment packing density or retinal eccentricity, and may not necessarily be linearly related. The purpose of this study was to establish the relationship between OD and POS length in humans., Methods: Spectral domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) was used to image POS, and imaging retinal densitometry (IRD) was used to measure OD at corresponding locations in 19 healthy participants (age range 25-82 years). POS length and OD measurements were extracted from OCT and IRD images at 23 discrete locations spanning the central 9° of the retina. The averaged data from all participants were fitted with models based on the Beer-Lambert law to establish the relationship between OD and POS length., Results: Visual pigment OD increased monotonically with POS length, but the relationship was non-linear, and a straight-line fit, based on a simple interpretation of the Beer-Lambert law, provided a poor description. A model allowing for different rod and cone visual pigment concentrations provided a superior fit. Specifically, the data were well described by a model where the molar concentration of visual pigment in cones and rods were 3.8 × 10 -3 mol/L and 1.8 × 10 -3 mol/L, respectively., Conclusions: In accordance with the Beer-Lambert law, the results indicate that OD increases monotonically with POS length in humans, but the precise relationship is dependent on photoreceptor type. These results suggest that visual pigment concentration in rods is only about 48% of that found in cones. To achieve high-efficiency combustion of heavy fuel oil (HFO), this study investigated the combustion characteristics of methanol/HFO droplets with methanol content from 10 to 30% using the suspension method under ambient temperature from 923 to 1023 K. The combustion of methanol/HFO droplets was summarized as a two-phase process consisting of six typical stages, emphasizing liquid phase. Especially, the fluctuation evaporation stage, induced by frequent and intense puffing, was identified as prominent character. Both the ignition delay and lifetime of HFO and methanol/HFO droplets decreased with increasing ambient temperatures. For the methanol/HFO droplet, the ignition delay and droplet lifetime increased with the increasing methanol content. Prominently, compared to HFO, HM10 had the most significant reduction in droplet lifetime and TINL under the same operating conditions, which indicated that the addition of 10% methanol accelerated the combustion process and reduced soot generation. Additionally, the thermos-dynamic characteristics of methanol/HFO droplets were investigated. Puffing was primarily attributed to superheating of methanol and pyrolysis of heavy components in HFO, which resulted in active and passive rupture of bubbles. Similarity and maximum deformation were employed to qualitatively distinguish between them. To support a range of behaviours, the brain must flexibly coordinate neural activity across widespread brain regions. One potential mechanism for this coordination is a travelling wave, in which a neural oscillation propagates across the brain while organizing the order and timing of activity across regions. Although travelling waves are present across the brain in various species, their potential functional relevance has remained unknown. Here, using rare direct human brain recordings, we demonstrate a distinct functional role for travelling waves of theta- and alpha-band (2-13 Hz) oscillations in the cortex. Travelling waves propagate in different directions during separate cognitive processes. In episodic memory, travelling waves tended to propagate in a posterior-to-anterior direction during successful memory encoding and in an anterior-to-posterior direction during recall. Because travelling waves of oscillations correspond to local neuronal spiking, these patterns indicate that rhythmic pulses of activity move across the brain in different directions for separate behaviours. More broadly, our results suggest a fundamental role for travelling waves and oscillations in dynamically coordinating neural connectivity, by flexibly organizing the timing and directionality of network interactions across the cortex to support cognition and behaviour., (© 2024. We explored unintentional drifts of finger forces during force production and matching task. Based on earlier studies, we predicted that force matching with the other hand would reduce or stop the force drift in instructed fingers while uninstructed (enslaved) fingers remain unaffected. Twelve young, healthy, right-handed participants performed two types of tasks with both hands (task hand and match hand). The task hand produced constant force at 20% of MVC level with the Index and Ring fingers pressing in parallel on strain gauge force sensors. The Middle finger force wasn't instructed, and its enslaved force was recorded. Visual feedback on the total force by the instructed fingers was either present throughout the trial or only during the first 5 s (no-feedback condition). The other hand matched the perceived force level of the task hand starting at either 4, 8, or 15 s from the trial initiation. No feedback was ever provided for the match hand force. After the visual feedback was removed, the task hand showed a consistent drift to lower magnitudes of total force. Contrary to our prediction, over all conditions, force matching caused a brief acceleration of force drift in the task hand, which then reached a plateau. There was no effect of matching on drifts in enslaved finger force. We interpret the force drifts within the theory of control with spatial referent coordinates as consequences of drifts in the command (referent coordinate) to the antagonist muscles. Traveling waves of neural activity emerge in cortical networks both spontaneously and in response to stimuli. The spatiotemporal structure of waves can indicate the information they encode and the physiological processes that sustain them. Here, we investigate the stimulus-response relationships of traveling waves emerging in adaptive neural fields as a model of visual motion processing. Neural field equations model the activity of cortical tissue as a continuum excitable medium, and adaptive processes provide negative feedback, generating localized activity patterns. Synaptic connectivity in our model is described by an integral kernel that weakens dynamically due to activity-dependent synaptic depression, leading to marginally stable traveling fronts (with attenuated backs) or pulses of a fixed speed. Our analysis quantifies how weak stimuli shift the relative position of these waves over time, characterized by a wave response function we obtain perturbatively. Persistent and continuously visible stimuli model moving visual objects. Intermittent flashes that hop across visual space can produce the experience of smooth apparent visual motion. Background: Type 2 time-intensity curves can indicate both malignant and benign breast lesions in dynamic contrast enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI)., Purpose: To investigate whether diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) or early phase kinetics of DCE-MRI is practical to discriminate breast masses that depict type 2 curve in DCE-MRI., Material and Methods: We retrospectively included 107 lesions in 97 patients with type 2 curves in DCE-MRI. Morphological characteristics, early phase dynamic parameters on DCE-MRI, and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values on DWI were evaluated. Diagnostic thresholds of ADC and early phase maximum enhancement ratio (EPMER) to distinguish between benign and malignant masses were calculated. Strongest predictors of malignancy were determined to build the most effective diagnostic model., Results: DWI, EPMER, and all morphological features were found statistically significant to discriminate malignancy ( P <0.05). The thresholds of ADC and EPMER were assigned as 1.0 ×10 -3  mm 2 /s and 72%, respectively. The sensitivity and specificity were 80% and 97% for ADC, and 93% and 60% for EPMER, respectively. Two models were established. Model 1 comprised ADC and the lesion margin. Model 2 consisted of ADC, margin, and EPMER with a high specificity (99%) and positive predictive value (97%)., Conclusion: When combined with DWI, early phase wash-in data provide diagnostic improvement of breast masses presenting type 2 curve in the late phase of DCE-MRI, especially for specificity. Purpose: The effect of skin lipids on the formation and stability of the human tear film was investigated., Methods: Skin swab substances (SSSs) were applied to the eyes of volunteers and studied using fluorescein or with TearView, which records infrared emissivity showing tear film integrity in real time. Results were compared with similar experiments using castor oil, freshly collected meibum, or acetic acid, which simulated the low pH of the skin., Results: Fluorescein and TearView results were comparable. TearView showed the natural unaltered tear film over the whole eye, instant changes to the tear film, and meibomian gland activity. Minimal amounts of SSS destroyed the integrity of the film and caused pain. Corneal epithelial damage could be detected. TearView showed that SSS stimulated meibomian gland secretion if applied directly to the posterior eyelid margin. Excess meibum had no effect on the tear film spread or integrity. Castor oil formed floating lenses on the tear film which were spread by a blink but then condensed back toward themselves. There was no pain or surface damage with these oils., Conclusions: SSS contamination of the ocular surface disrupts the tear film, causes stinging, and fluorescein staining of the corneal epithelial cells after a blink. SSS stimulates meibomian gland activity. It is possible that various ocular conditions associated with dry eye, such as blepharitis and ocular rosacea, may compromise a meibomian lipid barrier of the eye lid margin. Sensing internal bodily signals, or interoception, is fundamental to maintain life. However, interoception should not be viewed as an isolated domain, as it interacts with exteroception, cognition and action to ensure the integrity of the organism. Focusing on cardiac, respiratory and gastric rhythms, we review evidence that interoception is anatomically and functionally intertwined with the processing of signals from the external environment. Interactions arise at all stages, from the peripheral transduction of interoceptive signals to sensory processing and cortical integration, in a network that extends beyond core interoceptive regions. Interoceptive rhythms contribute to functions ranging from perceptual detection up to sense of self, or conversely compete with external inputs. Renewed interest in interoception revives long-standing issues on how the brain integrates and coordinates information in distributed regions, by means of oscillatory synchrony, predictive coding or multisensory integration. Autoimmune diseases are pathological conditions that result from the misidentification of self-antigens in immune system, leading to host tissue damage and destruction. These diseases can affect different organs and systems, including the blood, joints, skin, and muscles. Despite the significant progress made in comprehending the underlying pathogenesis, the complete mechanism of autoimmune disease is still not entirely understood. In autoimmune diseases, the innate immunocytes are not functioning properly: they are either abnormally activated or physically disabled. As a vital member of innate immunocyte, neutrophils and their modes of death are influenced by the microenvironment of different autoimmune diseases due to their short lifespan and diverse death modes. Related to neutrophil death pathways, apoptosis is the most frequent cell death form of neutrophil non-lytic morphology, delayed or aberrant apoptosis may contribute to the development anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV). In addition, NETosis, necroptosis and pyroptosis which are parts of lytic morphology exacerbate disease progression through various mechanisms in autoimmune diseases. We have developed a haptic dynamic clamp dedicated to the regulation of arousal. It takes the form of a vibrating stress ball to be squeezed, called Viball, controlled by Righetti's nonlinear adaptive Hopf oscillator. Participants squeezed an adaptive Viball which adapts its frequency of vibration to the current frequency of human squeezing. The adaptive Viball was compared to three non-adaptive Viballs, parametrized to vibrate at a lower, equal, or higher frequency than the participants' preferred frequency. While squeezing the ball, participants looked at stressful or calming pictures and their electrodermal activity was recorded. Using the preference paradigm, we show that participants preferred to interact with the adaptive Viball rather than with the most slowly vibrating ball that most strongly reduced arousal. The stability of the human-ball coordination was the highest with the adaptive Viball. There was also a positive correlation between the stability of coordination and arousal. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common multifaceted endocrine disorder among reproductive-aged women. Deranged luteinizing hormone levels and associated downstream signaling cascade mediated by its receptor luteinizing hormone chorionic gonadotropin receptor (LHCGR) are pivotal in the etiopathogenesis of PCOS. Genetic variations in the LHCGR have been associated with PCOS risk. However, the results are mixed and inconclusive. We evaluated the association of the LHCGR rs2293275 polymorphic variant with PCOS risk and its association with clinico-biochemical features of PCOS. 120 confirmed PCOS cases and an equal number of age-matched controls were subjected to clinical, biochemical, and hormonal investigations. Genotyping for rs2293275 was performed using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism. Logistic regression models were used to calculate odds ratios (ORs) at 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs). In the current study, PCOS cases reported a lower number of menstrual cycles per year than respective controls. A significantly higher BMI, Ferriman Galway score, levels of serum testosterone, insulin, TSH, FSH, and fasting glucose were observed in cases than in controls (p < 0.01). Compared to GG carriers, we observed a higher risk of developing PCOS in the subjects who harbored GA (OR 10.4, p < 0.0001) or AA (OR 7.73, p = 0.02) genotype. The risk persisted in the dominant model (GA + AA) as well (OR 10.29, p = 0.01). On stratification, a higher risk of developing PCOS was observed in variant genotype carriers who had a family history of either type two diabetes mellitus (OR 117; p < 0.0001) or hirsutism (OR 79; p < 0.0001). We also found significantly elevated levels of serum LH levels in the subject harboring GA and AA genotypes when compared to GG carriers. Murine double minute 2 (MDM2) is a well-recognized molecule for its oncogenic potential. Since its identification, various cancer-promoting roles of MDM2 such as growth stimulation, sustained angiogenesis, metabolic reprogramming, apoptosis evasion, metastasis, and immunosuppression have been established. Alterations in the expression levels of MDM2 occur in multiple types of cancers resulting in uncontrolled proliferation. The cellular processes are modulated by MDM2 through transcription, post-translational modifications, protein degradation, binding to cofactors, and subcellular localization. In this review, we discuss the precise role of deregulated MDM2 levels in modulating cellular functions to promote cancer growth. An increasing number of studies take advantage of ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) coupled to mass spectrometry (IMS-MS) to investigate the spatial structure of gaseous ions. Synthetic polymers occupy a unique place in the field of IMS-MS. Indeed, due to their intrinsic dispersity, they offer a broad range of homologous ions with different lengths. To help rationalize experimental data, various theoretical approaches have been described. First, the study of trend lines is proposed to derive physicochemical and structural parameters. However, the evaluation of data fitting reflects the overall behavior of the ions without reflecting specific information on their conformation. Atomistic simulations constitute another approach that provide accurate information about the ion shape. Gene transcription is an essential and highly regulated process. In eukaryotic cells, the structural organization of nucleosomes with DNA wrapped around histone proteins impedes transcription. Chromatin remodelers, transcription factors, co-activators, and histone-modifying enzymes work together to make DNA accessible to RNA polymerase. Histone lysine methylation can positively or negatively regulate gene transcription. Methylation of histone 3 lysine 4 by SET-domain-containing proteins is evolutionarily conserved from yeast to humans. In higher eukaryotes, mutations in SET-domain proteins are associated with defects in the development and segmentation of embryos, skeletal and muscle development, and diseases, including several leukemias. Since histone methyltransferases are evolutionarily conserved, the mechanisms of gene regulation mediated by these enzymes are also conserved. Budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is an excellent model system to study the impact of histone 3 lysine 4 (H3K4) methylation on eukaryotic gene regulation. Unlike larger eukaryotes, yeast cells have only one enzyme that catalyzes H3K4 methylation, Set1. In this review, we summarize current knowledge about the impact of Set1-catalyzed H3K4 methylation on gene transcription in S. cerevisiae. We describe the COMPASS complex, factors that influence H3K4 methylation, and the roles of Set1 in gene silencing at telomeres and heterochromatin, as well as repression and activation at euchromatic loci. Globally, waste disposal options such as landfill, incineration, and discharge to water, are not preferred long-term solutions due to their social, environmental, political, and economic implications. However, there is potential for increasing the sustainability of industrial processes by considering land application of industrial wastes. Applying waste to land can have beneficial outcomes including reducing waste sent to landfill and providing alternative nutrient sources for agriculture and other primary production. However, there are also potential hazards, including environmental contamination. This article reviewed the literature on industrial waste applications to soils and assessed the associated hazards and benefits. The review investigated wastes in relation to soil characteristics, dynamics between soils and waste constituents, and possible impacts on plants, animals, and humans. The current body of literature demonstrates the potential for the application of industrial waste into agricultural soils. The main challenge for applying industrial wastes to land is the presence of contaminants in some wastes and managing these to enhance positive effects and reduce negative outcomes to within acceptable limits. Background: Classically, cerebral autoregulation (CA) entails cerebral blood flow (CBF) remaining constant by cerebrovascular tone adapting to fluctuations in mean arterial pressure (MAP) between ∼60 and ∼150 mmHg. However, this is not an on-off mechanism; previous work has suggested that vasomotor tone is proportionally related to CA function. During propofol-based anaesthesia, there is cerebrovascular vasoconstriction, and static CA remains intact. Sevoflurane-based anaesthesia induces cerebral vasodilation and attenuates CA dose-dependently. It is unclear how this translates to dynamic CA across a range of blood pressures in the autoregulatory range., Objective: The aim of this study was to quantify the effect of step-wise increases in MAP between 60 and 100 mmHg, using phenylephrine, on dynamic CA during propofol- and sevoflurane-based anaesthesia., Design: A nonrandomised interventional trial., Setting: Single centre enrolment started on 11 January 2019 and ended on 23 September 2019., Patients: We studied American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) I/II patients undergoing noncardiothoracic, nonneurosurgical and nonlaparoscopic surgery under general anaesthesia., Intervention: In this study, cerebrovascular tone was manipulated in the autoregulatory range by increasing MAP step-wise using phenylephrine in patients receiving either propofol- or sevoflurane-based anaesthesia. MAP and mean middle cerebral artery blood velocity (MCA Vmean ) were measured in ASA I and II patients, anaesthetised with either propofol ( n  = 26) or sevoflurane ( n  = 28), during 10 mmHg step-wise increments of MAP between 60 and 100 mmHg. Static CA was determined by plotting 2-min averaged MCA Vmean versus MAP. Dynamic CA was determined using transfer function analysis and expressed as the phase lead (°) between MAP and MCA Vmean oscillations, created with positive pressure ventilation with a frequency of 6 min -1 ., Main Outcomes: The primary outcome of this study was the response of dynamic CA during step-wise increases in MAP during propofol- and sevoflurane-based anaesthesia., Results: MAP levels achieved per step-wise increments were comparable between anaesthesia regiment (63 ± 3, 72 ± 2, 80 ± 2, 90 ± 2, 100 ± 3 mmHg, and 61 ± 4, 71 ± 2, 80 ± 2, 89 ± 2, 98 ± 4 mmHg for propofol and sevoflurane, respectively). MCA Vmean increased more during step-wise MAP increments for sevoflurane compared to propofol ( P ≤0.001). Dynamic CA improved during propofol (0.73° mmHg -1 , 95% CI 0.51 to 0.95; P  ≤ 0.001)) and less pronounced during sevoflurane-based anaesthesia (0.21° mmHg -1 (95% CI 0.01 to 0.42, P  = 0.04)., Conclusions: During general anaesthesia, dynamic CA is dependent on MAP, also within the autoregulatory range. Lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) is the most common histological type of lung cancer. In recent years, cell senescence emerges as a potential therapeutic target of cancer therapy. However, the role of cell senescence in LUAD has not been comprehensively unveiled. One single cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) dataset (GSE149655) and two bulk RNA-seq datasets (TCGA and GSE31210) of LUAD were included. Seurat R package was used to process scRNA-seq data and identify immune cell subgroups. Single sample gene set enrichment analysis (ssGSEA) was performed to calculate enrichment score of senescence-related pathways. Senescence-based molecular subtyping for LUAD samples was conducted through unsupervised consensus clustering. pRRophetic package was introduced to analysis drug sensitivity. The senescence-associated risk model was established using univariate regression and stepAIC methods. Western blot, RT-qPCR, immunofluorescence assay and CCK-8 were used to explore the effect of CYCS in LUAD cell lines. Malignant immune cells had remarkedly higher enrichment of senescence-related pathways than non-malignant cells. P53 signaling and DNA damage telomere stress induced senescence pathways were found to be significantly activated in LUAD samples compared with normal samples. We identified two clusters (clust1 and clust2) based on senescence-related genes. Clust1 had severe genomic instability, aggravated senescent features, and low immune and stromal infiltration. The senescence-associated risk model including CASP9, CHEK1, CYCS, SERPINE1, SESN2, TP53I3, LMNB1, RAD50 and TERF2IP, was effective to distinguish high- and low-risk groups. Moreover, low-risk group exhibited sensitive responses to immunotherapy and chemotherapeutic drugs. In vitro experiments results showed that CYCS expression was increased and promoted cell viability in LUAD cell lines. This study explored the important role of senescence in LUAD progression, and confirmed the potential of senescence-related genes in predicting LUAD prognosis and response to immunotherapy and chemotherapy., (© 2023. DNA lesions that evade repair can lead to mutations that drive the development of cancer, and cellular responses to DNA damage can trigger senescence and cell death, which are associated with ageing. In the kidney, DNA damage has been implicated in both acute and chronic kidney injury, and in renal cell carcinoma. The susceptibility of the kidney to chemotherapeutic agents that damage DNA is well established, but an unexpected link between kidney ciliopathies and the DNA damage response has also been reported. In addition, human genetic deficiencies in DNA repair have highlighted DNA crosslinks, DNA breaks and transcription-blocking damage as lesions that are particularly toxic to the kidney. Genetic tools in mice, as well as advances in kidney organoid and single-cell RNA sequencing technologies, have provided important insights into how specific kidney cell types respond to DNA damage. The emerging view is that in the kidney, DNA damage affects the local microenvironment by triggering a damage response and cell proliferation to replenish injured cells, as well as inducing systemic responses aimed at reducing exposure to genotoxic stress. The pathological consequences of DNA damage are therefore key to the nephrotoxicity of DNA-damaging agents and the kidney phenotypes observed in human DNA repair-deficiency disorders., (© 2023. The human retina serves as a light detector and signals transmission tissue. Advanced insights into retinal disease mechanisms and therapeutic strategies require a deep understanding of healthy retina molecular events. Here, we sequenced the mRNA of over 0.6 million single cells from human retinas across six regions at nine different ages. Sixty cell sub-types have been identified from the human mature retinas with unique markers. We revealed regional and age differences of gene expression profiles within the human retina. Cell-cell interaction analysis indicated a rich synaptic connection within the retinal cells. Gene expression regulon analysis revealed the specific expression of transcription factors and their regulated genes in human retina cell types. Some of the gene's expression, such as DKK3, are elevated in aged retinas. A further functional investigation suggested that over expression of DKK3 could impact mitochondrial stability. Overall, decoding the molecular dynamic architecture of the human retina improves our understanding of the vision system., (© 2022. The 2019 coronavirus pandemic forced the shift to distance education aggravating mental and physical vulnerabilities of undergraduate students, including sleep. This review aims to describe sleep problem rates and prevalence, sleep pattern disruption, sleep duration, sleep quality, insomnia symptoms, psychological and socio-economic factors affecting sleep of undergraduates in 22 countries. A systematic search for articles published from 2020 to 2021 using 'COVID-19,' 'Coronavirus,' 'Pandemic,' 'Sleep,' 'Mental Health,' and 'Students' from PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane yielded 2550 articles, where 72 were included. Selection criteria were: English full-text available articles, undergraduates and not postgraduates, reported sleep outcomes, and participants not from allied health courses. Risk of bias was assessed using various Joanna Briggs Institute checklists and outcomes were descriptively synthesized. Prevalence of sleep problems was notable, while longitudinal studies showed increased rates. There was significantly increased sleep duration, and sleep pattern disruption during lockdowns. Several psychological, behavioural, environmental, demographic, and socio-economic factors were found to be associated with sleep changes. These highlight the pandemic's impact on sleep of undergraduate students and reveal opportunities for institutions to intervene with policies and programs to promote the well-being of undergraduates. Photochromic compounds of the spiropyran family have two main isomers capable of inter-switching with UV or visible light. In the current review, we discuss recent advances in the synthesis, investigation of properties, and applications of spiropyran derivatives. Spiropyrans of the indoline series are in focus as the most promising representatives of multi-sensitive spirocyclic compounds, which can be switched by a number of external stimuli, including light, temperature, pH, presence of metal ions, and mechanical stress. Particular attention is paid to the structural features of molecules, their influence on photochromic properties, and the reactions taking place during isomerization, as the understanding of the structure-property relationships will rationalize the synthesis of compounds with predetermined characteristics. The main prospects for applications of spiropyrans in such fields as smart material production, molecular electronics and nanomachinery, sensing of environmental and biological molecules, and photopharmacology are also discussed., (© 2023. Retrieval of glacier ice thickness is extremely important for monitoring water resources and predicting glacier dynamics and changes. The inter-annual glacier ice thickness observations (more than 5 years) exploit the glacier mass changes. Ice thickness is one of the important parameters to predict the future sea-level rise. Without adequate knowledge and precise information of glacier ice thickness distribution, future sea-level changes cannot be accurately assessed. In this study, we use an existing flow model to estimate the ice thickness of the High Mountain Asia (HMA) glaciers, using remote sensing techniques. The glacier ice velocity is one of the significant parameters in the Laminar flow model to retrieve the ice thickness. The glacier ice velocity is derived by utilizing the Differential SAR Interferometry (DInSAR) technique. The most optimum DInSAR data (ALOS-2/PALSAR-2) is used for estimating the ice velocity of the HMA glaciers. The ice thickness is mainly estimated for five different states in the HMA region, namely Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Bhutan, and Arunachal Pradesh. Most of the states are observed with a mean ice thickness of 100 m. Five benchmark glaciers (Samudra Tapu, Bara Shigri, Chhota Shigri, Sakchum, and Gangotri glaciers) are also selected for validating our results with the existing thickness information. The issues related to velocity-based ice thickness inversion are also emphasized in this study. The high-velocity rate due to the influx of melting water from adjacent glaciers causes an increment in the flow rate. This abnormal velocity derives erroneous ice thickness measurements. This is one of the major problems to be considered in the velocity-based thickness-derived procedures. Finally, the investigation suggests the inclusion of the velocity influencing parameters in the physical-based models for an accurate ice thickness inversion., (© 2022.
