Objective: Mastoidectomy surgical training is challenging due to the complex nature of the anatomical structures involved. Traditional training methods based on direct patient care and cadaveric temporal bone training have practical shortcomings. 3D-printed temporal bone models and augmented reality (AR) have emerged as promising solutions, particularly for mastoidectomy surgery, which demands an understanding of intricate anatomical structures. Evidence is needed to explore the potential of AR technology in addressing these training challenges., Methods: 21 medical students in their clinical clerkship were recruited for this prospective, randomized controlled trial assessing mastoidectomy skills. The participants were randomly assigned to the AR group, which received real-time guidance during drilling on 3D-printed temporal bone models, or to the control group, which received traditional training methods. Skills were assessed on a modified Welling scale and evaluated independently by two senior otologists., Results: The AR group outperformed the control group, with a mean overall drilling score of 19.5 out of 25, compared with the control group's score of 12 (p < 0.01). Background: Successfully restoring facial contours continues to pose a significant challenge for surgeons. This study aims to utilize head-mounted display-based augmented reality (AR) navigation technology for facial soft tissue defect reconstruction and to evaluate its accuracy and effectiveness, exploring its feasibility in craniofacial surgery., Methods: Hololens 2 was utilized to construct the AR guidance system for facial fat grafting. Twenty artificial cases with facial soft tissue defects were randomly assigned to Group A and Group B, undergoing filling surgeries with the AR guidance system and conventional methods, respectively. All postoperative three-dimensional models were superimposed onto virtual plans to evaluate the accuracy of the system versus conventional filling methods. Additionally, procedure completion time was recorded to assess system efficiency relative to conventional methods., Results: The error in facial soft tissue defect reconstruction assisted by the system in Group A was 2.09 ± 0.56 mm, significantly lower than the 3.23 ± 1.15 mm observed with conventional methods in Group B (p < 0.05). Additionally, the time required for facial defect filling reconstruction using the system in Group A was 25.45 ± 2.58 min, markedly shorter than the 37.05 ± 3.34 min needed with conventional methods in Group B (p < 0.05)., Conclusion: The visual navigation offered by the fat grafting AR guidance system presents obvious advantages in facial soft tissue defect reconstruction, facilitating enhanced precision and efficiency in these filling procedures., (© 2024. Immersive virtual reality (IVR) and augmented reality (AR) are emerging technologies with significant potential in ultrasound education. IVR, utilizing head-mounted devices (HMDs), and AR, enhancing real-world views with digital overlays, have demonstrated their value in various educational and training scenarios. This narrative review examines the use of IVR and AR in ultrasound education, evaluating their effectiveness compared to traditional methods. Studies show that IVR and AR can match or surpass conventional training, offering benefits like standardized assessments and reduced costs. Despite some limitations, such as small sample sizes and potential conflicts of interest, the current data supports the viability of IVR and AR as tools for ultrasound education. Anatomy is the cornerstone of medical education. Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies are becoming increasingly popular in the development of anatomy education. Various studies have evaluated VR and AR in anatomy education. This meta-analysis aims to evaluate the effectiveness of VR and AR in anatomical education. The protocol was registered in Prospero. Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases were searched. From the 4487 articles gathered, 24 randomized controlled trials were finally selected according to inclusion criteria. According to the results of the meta-analysis, VR had a moderate and significant effect on the improvement of knowledge scores in comparison with other methods (standardized mean difference = 0.58; 95% CI = 0.22, 0.95; p < 0.01). Due to the high degree of heterogeneity (I 2  = 87.44%), subgroup analyses and meta-regression were performed on eight variables. In enhancing the "attitude," VR was found to be more "useful" than other methods (p = 0.01); however, no significant difference was found for "enjoyable" and "easy to use" statements. Compared with other methods, the effect of AR on knowledge scores was non-significant (SMD = -0.02; 95% CI = -0.39, 0.34; p = 0.90); also, in subgroup analyses and meta-regression, the results were non-significant. The results indicate that, unlike AR, VR could be used as an effective tool for teaching anatomy in medical education. This article examines fiction references in news coverage of extended reality. Based on a mixed methods analysis of 977 news articles from UK mainstream mass media outlets, this study found that fiction references were frequently used as framing devices within the news articles, with a focus on two franchises: The Matrix original trilogy (1999-2003) and Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987-1994). These references were utilised in the following three key ways: claiming fiction is becoming real; as a tool to improve readers' understanding of extended reality; and, to a limited degree, to create dystopic visions of extended reality. Ultimately, this article shows that, despite the dystopic representations of extended reality in fiction, fiction references have primarily been used to portray extended reality as advanced and high-quality. This supports extended reality adoption and the commercial interests of technology companies, raising questions as to whether journalists prioritise the interests of their readers when creating such news.

Attending to the behaviors of eyewitnesses at police lineups could help to determine whether an eyewitness identification is accurate or mistaken. Eyewitness identification decision processes were explored using augmented reality holograms. Children (n = 143; Mage = 10.79, SD = 1.12 years) and adults (n = 152; Mage = 22.12, SD = 7.47 years) viewed staged crime videos and made identification decisions from sequential lineups. The lineups were presented in augmented reality. Children were less accurate than adults on the lineup task. For adults, fast response times and high post-identification confidence ratings were both reflective of identification accuracy. Fast response times were also reflective of accuracy for children; however, children's confidence ratings did not reflect the likely accuracy of their identifications. A new additional measure, the witness' proximity to the augmented reality lineup, revealed that children who made mistaken identifications moved closer to the lineup than children who correctly identified the person from the crime video. Adults who moved any distance towards the lineup were less accurate than adults who did not move at all, but beyond that, adults' proximity to the lineup was not reflective of accuracy. The findings give further evidence that behavioral indicators of deliberation and information-seeking by eyewitnesses are signals of low lineup identification reliability. At the Worldwide Developers Conference in June 2023, Apple introduced the Vision Pro. The Apple Vision Pro (AVP) is a mixed reality headset; more specifically, it is a virtual reality device with an additional video see-through capability. The video see-through capability turns the AVP into an augmented reality (AR) device. The AR feature is enabled by streaming the real world via cameras on the (virtual reality) screens in front of the user's eyes. This is, of course, not unique and is similar to other devices, such as the Varjo XR-3 (Varjo Technologies Oy). Nevertheless, the AVP has some interesting features, such as an inside-out screen that can show the headset wearer's eyes to "outsiders," and a button on the top, called the "digital crown," that allows a seamless blend of digital content with the user's physical space by turning it. In addition, it is untethered, except for the cable to the battery, which makes the headset more agile, compared to the Varjo XR-3. This could actually come closer to "The Ultimate Display," which Ivan Sutherland had already sketched in 1965. After a great response from the media and social networks to the release, we were able to test and review the new AVP ourselves in March 2024. Background: Microsurgical clipping is a delicate neurosurgical procedure used to treat complex Unruptured Intracranial Aneurysms (UIAs) whose outcome is dependent on surgeon's experience. Simulations are emerging as excellent complements to standard training, but their adoption is limited by the realism they provide. The aim of this study was to develop and validate a microsurgical clipping simulator platform., Methods: Physical and holographic simulators of UIA clipping have been developed. The physical phantom consisted of a 3D printed hard skull and five (n = 5) rapidly interchangeable, perfused and fluorescence compatible 3D printed aneurysm silicone phantoms. The holographic clipping simulation included a real-time finite-element-model of the aneurysm sac, allowing interaction with a virtual clip and its occlusion. Validity, usability, usefulness and applications of the simulators have been assessed through clinical scores for aneurysm occlusion and a questionnaire study involving 14 neurosurgical residents (R) and specialists (S) for both the physical ( p ) and holographic ( h ) simulators by scores going from 1 (very poor) to 5 (excellent)., Results: The physical simulator allowed to replicate successfully and accurately the patient-specific anatomy. UIA phantoms were manufactured with an average dimensional deviation from design of 0.096 mm and a dome thickness of 0.41 ± 0.11 mm. The holographic simulation executed at 25-50 fps allowing to gain unique insights on the anatomy and testing of the application of several clips without manufacturing costs. Aneurysm closure in the physical model evaluated by fluorescence simulation and post-operative CT revealed Raymond 1 (full) occlusion respectively in 68.89% and 73.33% of the cases. For both the simulators content validity, construct validity, usability and usefulness have been observed, with the highest scores observed in clip selection usefulness R p =4.78, S p =5.00 and R h =4.00, S h =5.00 for the printed and holographic simulators., Conclusions: Both the physical and the holographic simulators were validated and resulted usable and useful in selecting valid clips and discarding unsuitable ones. Background: To capture the distortion of exploratory activity typical of patients with spatial neglect, traditional diagnostic methods and new virtual reality applications use confined workspaces that limit patients' exploration behavior to a predefined area. Our aim was to overcome these limitations and enable the recording of patients' biased activity in real, unconfined space., Methods: We developed the Free Exploration Test (FET) based on augmented reality technology. Using a live stream via the back camera on a tablet, patients search for a (non-existent) virtual target in their environment, while their exploration movements are recorded for 30 s. We tested 20 neglect patients and 20 healthy participants and compared the performance of the FET with traditional neglect tests., Results: In contrast to controls, neglect patients exhibited a significant rightward bias in exploratory movements. The FET had a high discriminative power (area under the curve = 0.89) and correlated positively with traditional tests of spatial neglect (Letter Cancellation, Bells Test, Copying Task, Line Bisection). An optimal cut-off point of the averaged bias of exploratory activity was at 9.0° on the right; it distinguished neglect patients from controls with 85% sensitivity., Discussion: FET offers time-efficient (execution time: ∼3 min), easy-to-apply, and gamified assessment of free exploratory activity. It supplements traditional neglect tests, providing unrestricted recording of exploration in the real, unconfined space surrounding the patient.

Human-virtual object interaction is common in both entertainment and work settings. This study investigated the movement time (MT) and subjective rating of difficulty (SRD) for moving a virtual cuboid in a 3D space. The participants wore an augmented reality (AR) headset, picked up a virtual cuboid, and placed it on an assigned target. They rated the SRD of the task on a five-point scale. The effects of the 3D coordinate of the target, sex, and handedness on the MT were analysed. The error placement rate was also recorded. Significant effects of spatial coordinates were found on both MT and SRD. Both single- and two-stage MT modelling were conducted using segmented and unsegmented MT data, respectively. The insignificant prediction error between the models indicates that the two-stage MT model is not superior to the single-stage one. The findings of this study are beneficial to software designers in designing user-friendly AR applications.

Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental disorders worldwide. These conditions are characterized by excessive anxiety that is difficult to control. In most anxiety disorders, symptoms are triggered by exposure to specific objects or situations. This leads sufferers to avoid such exposures, leading to impaired social and occupational functioning and reduced quality of life. Therapies based on behavioral principles, either alone or in combination with cognitive techniques, are the most effective psychological interventions for anxiety disorders. However, the effectiveness of these therapies may be limited due to a lack of generalization from clinic to real-world settings. Augmented reality (AR) is a technology that provides an interactive experience by superimposing computer-generated content, often in multiple sensory modalities, on the real world. Emerging evidence suggests that AR may be useful in treating a broad range of mental disorders, including anxiety disorders. This review examines the evidence for the use of AR-based techniques as an aid to behavioral or cognitive-behavioral therapies for anxiety disorders. The available evidence suggests that this method may offer significant advantages over conventional therapies, particularly in the case of specific phobias, but also in social anxiety disorder. AR can also be combined with other novel technologies to monitor psychophysiological markers of anxiety and its reduction over the course of treatment. The advantages of AR could be related to its combination of real and simulated content, allowing for better generalization of the benefits of conventional exposure-based therapy. Background: Labor pain and anxiety are significant challenges in maternal healthcare, often managed through pharmacological interventions. Virtual Reality (VR), as a non- pharmacological method, has emerged as a potential tool for pain and anxiety relief in labor. This integrative review aims to synthesize evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs), qualitative studies, and mixed-methods research to evaluate the effectiveness of VR in labor pain and anxiety management and to understand patient experiences., Methods: Adhering to the PRISMA guidelines, a structured literature search was conducted across databases, including PsycINFO, CINAHL, and PubMed, yielding 1,227 studies. Following a meticulous screening and selection process by authors, 13 studies (10 RCTs, 2 qualitative, and 1 mixed methods) met the inclusion criteria. Data extraction focused on study design, population characteristics, VR interventions, outcomes measured, and key findings, with a content analysis approach employed for thematic synthesis., Results: The RCTs consistently showed VR's efficacy in reducing labor pain and, to some extent, anxiety. Qualitative studies highlighted VR's role in enhancing patient experiences, offering distraction, relaxation, and improved self-efficacy in pain management. The integration of findings from quantitative and qualitative studies provided a comprehensive understanding of VR's effectiveness and acceptability in labor. Notable themes included the importance of VR's immersive nature and its potential to reduce reliance on pharmacological interventions., Conclusion: VR emerges as a promising tool for managing labor pain and anxiety, offering a non-invasive and patient-friendly alternative to traditional pain relief methods. Its implementation in clinical practice could enhance patient satisfaction and overall birthing experiences. Purpose: To create an open-access Linear Accelerator Education and Augmented Reality Navigator (Open LEARN) via 3D printable objects and interactive augmented reality assets., Methods: This study describes an augmented reality linear accelerator (linac) model accessible through a QR code and a smartphone to address the challenges of medical physics and radiation oncology trainees in low-to-middle-income countries., Results: Major components of a generic linear accelerator are modeled as individual objects. These objects can be 3D printed for hands-on learning and used as interactive 3D assets within the augmented reality app. In the AR app, descriptions are displayed to navigate the components spatially and textually. Items modeled include the treatment couch, klystron, circulator, RF waveguides, electron gun, waveguide, beam steering assemblies, target, collimators, multi-leaf collimators, and imaging systems. Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing the field of biomedical research and treatment, leveraging machine learning (ML) and advanced algorithms to analyze extensive health and medical data more efficiently. In headache disorders, particularly migraine, AI has shown promising potential in various applications, such as understanding disease mechanisms and predicting patient responses to therapies. Implementing next-generation AI in headache research and treatment could transform the field by providing precision treatments and augmenting clinical practice, thereby improving patient and public health outcomes and reducing clinician workload. AI-powered tools, such as large language models, could facilitate automated clinical notes and faster identification of effective drug combinations in headache patients, reducing cognitive burdens and physician burnout. AI diagnostic models also could enhance diagnostic accuracy for non-headache specialists, making headache management more accessible in general medical practice. Furthermore, virtual health assistants, digital applications, and wearable devices are pivotal in migraine management, enabling symptom tracking, trigger identification, and preventive measures. AI tools also could offer stress management and pain relief solutions to headache patients through digital applications. However, considerations such as technology literacy, compatibility, privacy, and regulatory standards must be adequately addressed. Background: In the realm of trauma response preparation for prehospital teams, the combination of Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) with manikin technologies is growing in importance for creating training scenarios that closely mirror potential real-life situations. The pilot study focused on training of airway management and intubation for trauma incidents, based on a Trauma AR-VR simulator involving reserve paramedics of the National EMS service (Magen David Adom) who had not practiced for up to six years, activated during the Israel-Gaza conflict (October 2023). The trauma simulator merges the physical and virtual realms by utilizing a real manikin and instruments outfitted with sensors. This integration enables a precise one-to-one correspondence between the physical and virtual environments. Considering the importance of enhancing the preparedness of the reserve paramedics to support the prehospital system in Israel, the study aims to ascertain the impact of AR-VR Trauma simulator training on the modification of key perceptual attitudes such as self-efficacy, resilience, knowledge, and competency among reserve paramedics in Israel., Methods: A quantitative questionnaire was utilized to gauge the influence of AR-VR training on specific psychological and skill-based metrics, including self-efficacy, resilience, medical knowledge, professional competency, confidence in performing intubations, and the perceived quality of the training experience in this pilot study. The methodology entailed administering a pre-training questionnaire, delivering a targeted 30-minute AR-VR training session on airway management techniques, and collecting post-training data through a parallel questionnaire to measure the training's impact. Fifteen reserve paramedics were trained, with a response rate of 80% (n = 12) in both measurements., Results: Post-training evaluations indicated a significant uptick in all measured areas, with resilience (3.717±0.611 to 4.008±0.665) and intubation confidence (3.541±0.891 to 3.833±0.608) showing particularly robust gains. The high rating (4.438±0.419 on a scale of 5) of the training quality suggests positive response to the AR-VR integration for the enhancement of medical training, CONCLUSIONS: The application of AR-VR in the training of reserve paramedics demonstrates potential as a key tool for their swift mobilization and efficiency in crisis response. Gait guidance systems that synchronize the gait rhythm with an avatar in a mixed reality (MR) environment are attracting attention owing to their rehabilitation applications. More effective gait guidance can be achieved by changing body sensations for the sense of embodiment (SoE), which refers to the feeling of owning, controlling, and being inside a body in MR. This study investigated full-body synchronous motion between a human and a virtual avatar to enhance the SoE in walking with actual position changes in the real world. The full-body motion and gait rhythm were measured using body-worn inertial measurement units and a visual avatar was provided through a transparent head-mounted display. The results showed that the SoE of the participants was enhanced under higher synchronization conditions. In addition, questionnaire results showed that the SoE in the synchronous condition was significantly higher than that in the asynchronous condition, and the SoE in the self-avatar condition was significantly higher than that in the other-avatar condition. This indicates that a higher synchronization level with the appearance of an avatar leads to a stronger SoE in the human perception mechanism, which is important for potential application in medical or other fields., (© 2024. Purpose: Optical-see-through head-mounted displays have the ability to seamlessly integrate virtual content with the real world through a transparent lens and an optical combiner. Although their potential for use in surgical settings has been explored, their clinical translation is sparse in the current literature, largely due to their limited tracking capabilities and the need for manual alignment of virtual representations of objects with their real-world counterparts., Methods: We propose a simple and robust hand-eye calibration process for the depth camera of the Microsoft HoloLens 2, utilizing a tracked surgical stylus fitted with infrared reflective spheres as the calibration tool., Results: Using a Monte Carlo simulation and a paired-fiducial registration algorithm, we show that a calibration accuracy of 1.65 mm can be achieved with as little as 6 fiducial points. We also present heuristics for optimizing the accuracy of the calibration. The ability to use our calibration method in a clinical setting is validated through a user study, with users achieving a mean calibration accuracy of 1.67 mm in an average time of 42 s., Conclusion: This work enables real-time hand-eye calibration for the Microsoft HoloLens 2, without any need for a manual alignment process. Objectives: To investigate whether the scanning time, trueness and number of photos are influenced when augmented reality (AR) heads-up display (HUD) is utilized during the intraoral scan of fully dentate mandibular arches., Methods: A total of 10 patients (6 females and 4 males) were included. The mandibular arch of each patient was scanned twice using an intraoral scanner (Trios4 Pod IOS: 3Shape): one with and one without AR-HUD (ML2; Magic Leap). Further, alginate impression was taken, and the cast was digitized to acquire the reference model for trueness comparison (T310, Medit). The scan time and number of photos were recorded. Trueness was evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively using colored heat maps and RMSE values respectively. t-test was used to evaluate the difference in scan time, trueness, and number of photos between the two groups (α = .05)., Results: AR-assisted IOS resulted in significantly faster scan time (44 s) compared to the time consumed following conventional scan method without AR-HUD (63 s) (P = <0.001). The number of photos was also significantly less with AR-assisted IOS (836) compared to IOS using conventional technique without AR-HUD (1209) P = <0.001. Background: Telementoring studies found technical challenges in achieving accurate and stable annotations during live surgery using commercially available telestration software intraoperatively. To address the gap, a wireless handheld telestration device was developed to facilitate dynamic user interaction with live video streams., Objective: This study aims to find the perceived usability, ergonomics, and educational value of a first-generation handheld wireless telestration platform., Methods: A prototype was developed with four core hand-held functions: (1) free-hand annotation, (2) cursor navigation, (3) overlay and manipulation (rotation) of ghost (avatar) instrumentation, and (4) hand-held video feed navigation on a remote monitor. This device uses a proprietary augmented reality platform. Surgeons and trainees were invited to test the core functions of the platform by performing standardized tasks. Usability and ergonomics were evaluated with a validated system usability scale and a 5-point Likert scale survey, which also evaluated the perceived educational value of the device., Results: In total, 10 people (9 surgeons and 1 senior resident; 5 male and 5 female) participated. Participants strongly agreed or agreed (SA/A) that it was easy to perform annotations (SA/A 9, 90% and neutral 0, 0%), video feed navigation (SA/A 8, 80% and neutral 1, 10%), and manipulation of ghost (avatar) instruments on the monitor (SA/A 6, 60% and neutral 3, 30%). Regarding ergonomics, 40% (4) of participants agreed or strongly agreed (neutral 4, 40%) that the device was physically comfortable to use and hold. These results are consistent with open-ended comments on the device's size and weight. The average system usability scale was 70 (SD 12.5; median 75, IQR 63-84) indicating an above average usability score. Participants responded favorably to the device's perceived educational value, particularly for postoperative coaching (agree 6, 60%, strongly agree 4, 40%)., Conclusions: This study presents the preliminary usability results of a novel first-generation telestration tool customized for use in surgical coaching. Favorable usability and perceived educational value were reported. Future iterations of the device should focus on incorporating user feedback and additional studies should be conducted to evaluate its effectiveness for improving surgical education. Objective: Ophthalmic ward nursing work is onerous and busy, and many researchers have tried to introduce artificial intelligence (AI) technology to assist nurses in performing nursing tasks. This study aims to use augmented reality (AR) and AI technology to develop an intelligent assistant system for ophthalmic ward nurses and evaluate the usability and acceptability of the system in assisting clinical work for nurses., Methods: Based on AR technology, under the framework of deep learning, the system management, functions, and interfaces were completed using acoustic recognition, voice interaction, and image recognition technologies. Finally, an intelligent assistance system with functions such as patient face recognition, automatic information matching, and nursing work management was developed. Ophthalmic day ward nurses were invited to participate in filling out the System Usability Scale (SUS). Using the AR-based intelligent assistance system (AR-IAS) as the experimental group and the existing personal digital assistant (PDA) system as the control group. The experimental results of the three subscales of learnability, efficiency, and satisfaction of the usability scale were compared, and the clinical usability score of the AR-IAS system was calculated., Results: This study showed that the AR-IAS and the PDA systems had learnability subscale scores of 22.50/30.00 and 21.00/30.00, respectively; efficiency subscale scores of 29.67/40.00 and 28.67/40.00, respectively; and satisfaction subscale scores of 23.67/30.00 and 23.17/30.00, respectively. The overall usability score of the AR-IAS system was 75.83/100.00., Conclusion: Based on the analysis results of the System Usability Scale, the AR-IAS system developed using AR and AI technology has good overall usability and can be accepted by clinical nurses. Purpose: Anatomical understanding is an important basis for medical teaching, especially in a surgical context. The interpretation of complex vascular structures via two-dimensional visualization can yet be difficult, particularly for students. The objective of this study was to investigate the feasibility of an MxR-assisted educational approach in vascular surgery undergraduate education, comparing an MxR-based teaching-intervention with CT-based material for learning and understanding the vascular morphology of the thoracic aorta., Methods: In a prospective randomized controlled trial learning success and diagnostic skills following an MxR- vs. a CT-based intervention was investigated in 120 thoracic aortic visualizations. Secondary outcomes were motivation, system-usability as well as workload/satisfaction. Motivational factors and training-experience were also assessed. Twelve students (7 females; mean age: 23 years) were randomized into two groups undergoing educational intervention with MxR or CT., Results: Evaluation of learning success showed a mean improvement of 1.17 points (max.score: 10; 95%CI: 0.36-1.97). The MxR-group has improved by a mean of 1.33 [95% CI: 0.16-2.51], against 1.0 points [95% CI: -0.71- 2.71] in the CT-group. Regarding diagnostic skills, both groups performed equally (CT-group: 58.25 ± 7.86 vs. MxR-group:58.5 ± 6.60; max. score 92.0). 11/12 participants were convinced that MxR facilitated learning of vascular morphologies. The usability of the MxR-system was rated positively, and the perceived workload was low., Conclusion: MxR-systems can be a valuable addition to vascular surgery education. Further evaluation of the technology in larger teaching situations are required. Purpose: Genitoplasty is becoming more and more common, and it is important to improve the accuracy of the procedure and simplify the procedure. This experiment explores the feasibility of using augmented reality (AR) technology combined with PSI titanium plates for navigational assistance in genioplasty performed on models, aiming to study the precision of such surgical interventions., Methods: Twelve genioplasty procedures were designed and implemented on 3D-printed resin mandibular models by the same surgeon using three different approaches: AR+3DT group (AR+PSI) , 3DT group (patient-specific titanium plate) , and a traditional free-hand group(FH group). Postoperative models were assessed using CBCT to evaluate surgical accuracy., Results: In terms of osteotomy accuracy, the AR group demonstrated a surgical error of 0.9440±0.5441 mm, significantly lower than the control group, which had an error of 1.685±0.8907 mm (P < 0.0001). In experiments positioning the distal segment of the chin, the overall centroid shift in the AR group was 0.3661±0.1360 mm, significantly less than the 2.304±0.9629 mm in the 3DT group and 1.562±0.9799 mm in the FH group (P < 0.0001). Regarding angular error, the AR+3DT group showed 2.825±1.373°, significantly <8.283±3.640° in the 3DT group and 7.234±5.241° in the FH group., Conclusion: AR navigation technology combined with PSI titanium plates demonstrates higher surgical accuracy compared to traditional methods and shows feasibility for use. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the changes in ocular refraction and pupillary diameter during fixation on augmented reality (AR) images using a Maxwellian display., Methods: Twenty-two healthy young volunteers (average age, 20.7 ± 0.5 years) wore a Maxwellian display device in front of their right eye and fixated on an asterisk displayed on both a liquid-crystal display (real target) and a Maxwellian display (AR target) for 29 seconds (real as a baseline for 3 seconds, AR for 13 seconds, and real for 13 seconds) at distances of 5.0, 0.5, 0.33, and 0.2 meters. A binocular open-view autorefractometer was used to measure the ocular refraction and pupillary diameter of the left eye., Results: Accommodative (5.0 meters, 0.28 ± 0.29 diopter [D]; 0.5 meter, -0.12 ± 0.35 D; 0.33 meter, -0.43 ± 0.57 D; 0.2 meter, -1.20 ± 0.82 D) and pupillary (5.0 meters, 0.07 ± 0.22 mm; 0.5 meter, -0.08 ± 0.17 mm; 0.33 meter, -0.16 ± 0.20 mm; 0.2 meter, -0.25 ± 0.24 mm) responses were negative when the real target distances were farther away. The accommodative response was significantly and positively correlated with the pupillary response during fixation on the AR target (R2 = 0.187, P < 0.001)., Conclusions: Fixating on AR images using a Maxwellian display induces accommodative and pupillary responses. Accommodative responses depend on the distance between real objects. Overall, the Maxwellian display does not completely eliminate accommodation in real space.

Sleep problems are highly prevalent in autism and negatively impact the physical and mental health of children and their caregivers. Sleep education programs are often recommended as a first line-treatment to help parents implement healthy sleeping habits and a bedtime routine at home; however, the accompanying paper-based toolkits used in the bedtime routines have limitations related to engagement and adherence. To address these gaps, we iteratively developed and tested the usability of an augmented reality (AR) bedtime routine application. Our single participant design study ( n  = 7 child/parent dyads) found 86% compliance with the program and suggested good-excellent usability of the app with a trend toward increased willingness and faster completion of children's bedtime routines. This work supports the feasibility of using technology-based tools in sleep education programs and informs future clinical studies examining the effectiveness of these approaches for mitigating sleep difficulties.

Purpose: Augmented reality navigation in liver surgery still faces technical challenges like insufficient registration accuracy. This study compared registration accuracy between local and external virtual 3D liver models (vir3DLivers) generated with different rendering techniques and the use of the left vs right main portal vein branch (LPV vs RPV) for landmark setting. The study should further examine how registration accuracy behaves with increasing distance from the ROI., Methods: Retrospective registration accuracy analysis of an optical intraoperative 3D navigation system, used in 13 liver tumor patients undergoing liver resection/thermal ablation., Results: 109 measurements in 13 patients were performed. Registration accuracy with local and external vir3DLivers was comparable (8.76 ± 0.9 mm vs 7.85 ± 0.9 mm; 95% CI = -0.73 to 2.55 mm; p = 0.272). Registrations via the LPV demonstrated significantly higher accuracy than via the RPV (6.2 ± 0.85 mm vs 10.41 ± 0.99 mm, 95% CI = 2.39 to 6.03 mm, p < 0.001). There was a statistically significant positive but weak correlation between the accuracy (d Feature ) and the distance from the ROI (d ROI ) (r = 0.298; p = 0.002)., Conclusion: Despite basing on different rendering techniques both local and external vir3DLivers have comparable registration accuracy, while LPV-based registrations significantly outperform RPV-based ones in accuracy. Background: The demand for telesurgery is rapidly increasing. Augmented reality (AR) remote surgery is a promising alternative, fulfilling a worldwide need in fracture surgery. However, previous AR endoscopic and Google Glass remotes remain unsuitable for fracture surgery, and the application of remote fracture surgery has not been reported. The authors aimed to evaluate the safety and clinical effectiveness of a new AR remote in fracture surgery., Materials and Methods: This retrospective non-inferiority cohort study was conducted at three centres. Between 1 January 2018 and 31 March 2022, 800 patients who underwent fracture surgery were eligible for participation. The study enroled 551 patients with fractures (132 patellae, 128 elbows, 126 tibial plateaus, and 165 ankles) divided into an AR group (specialists used AR to remotely guide junior doctors to perform surgeries) and a traditional non-remote group (specialists performed the surgery themselves)., Results: Among 364 patients (182 per group) matched by propensity score, seven (3.8%) in the AR group and six (3%) in the non-remote group developed complications. The 0.005 risk difference (95% CI: -0.033 to 0.044) was below the pre-defined non-inferiority margin of a 10% absolute increase. A similar distribution in the individual components of all complications was found between the groups. Hierarchical analysis following propensity score matching revealed no statistical difference between the two groups regarding functional results at 1-year follow-up, operative time, amount of bleeding, number of fluoroscopies, and injury surgery interval. A Likert scale questionnaire showed positive results (median scores: 4-5) for safety, efficiency, and education., Conclusion: This study is the first to report that AR remote surgery can be as safe and effective as that performed by a specialist in person for fracture surgery, even without the physical presence of a specialist, and is associated with improving the skills and increasing the confidence of junior surgeons. With software developments and advances in display technologies substantially improved, augmented reality (AR) application has gained popularity. In this study, we discuss using classic PowerPoint and AR for two kinds of scaffolding tasks (task-lifeline assembly and hedge assembly) for users with different spatial ability. We considered both objective and subjective measures of performance, i.e., correct rate and system usability and the ITC-sense of presence inventory (ITC-SOPI) scale. The results of the study show that participants using AR achieved higher operating performance than those using PowerPoint. Furthermore, the users' learning effect was influenced by spatial ability when using PowerPoint. Participants with high spatial ability achieved higher performance than participants with low spatial ability in PowerPoint. However, participants who used AR as a training method did not show significantly different operating performance at different levels of spatial ability. Consequently, AR was believed to be a potential method for enhancing training performance.

Objectives: Tooth preparation is complicated because it requires the preparation of an abutment while simultaneously predicting the ideal shape of the tooth. This study aimed to develop and evaluate a system using augmented reality (AR) head-mounted displays (HMDs) that provide dynamic navigation capabilities for tooth preparation., Methods: The proposed system utilizes optical see-through HMDs to overlay digital information onto the real world and enrich the user's environment. By integrating tracking algorithms and three-dimensional modeling, the system provides real-time visualization and navigation capabilities during tooth preparation by using two different visualization techniques. The experimental setup involved a comprehensive analysis of the distance to the surface and cross-sectional angles between the ideal and prepared teeth using three scenarios: traditional (without AR), overlay (AR-assisted visualization of the ideal prepared tooth), and cross-sectional (AR-assisted visualization with cross-sectional views and angular displays)., Results: A user study (N = 24) revealed that the cross-sectional approach was more effective for angle adjustment and reduced the occurrence of over-reduction. Additional questionnaires revealed that the AR-assisted approaches were perceived as less difficult, with the cross-sectional approach excelling in terms of performance., Conclusions: Visualization and navigation using cross-sectional approaches have the potential to support safer tooth preparation with less overreduction than traditional and overlay approaches do. Problem: Emergency obstetric management is essential in midwifery training to prevent fetal and maternal morbidity. Repeating this management in practice is often not possible. Sustainable confidence in these procedures is usually achieved in the first few years of practice., Background: Simulation training complements hands-on learning and improves practical skills, benefiting both students and patients. Research on obstetric emergency simulation training have demonstrated this, but the use of digital simulation approaches, such as augmented reality (AR), is under-researched., Aim: To investigate whether AR simulation training influences midwifery students' subjective perceptions of knowledge, confidence and practical skills in emergency situations., Methods: A descriptive exploratory study was conducted using a pre-post design. AR scenarios were developed on the topics of 'preparing emergency tocolysis', 'preparing a pregnant woman for caesarean section' and 'resuscitation of newborns'. The AR simulation was conducted in the fourth to fifth semester of the midwifery programme. A questionnaire was developed for students (N = 133) to self-assess their competence in the categories of knowledge, confidence and practical skills., Results: Students rated their competence significantly better in the post-survey than in the pre-survey (p=<0.05). Simulation has an impact on self-assessment of professional knowledge, confidence and practical skills in emergency situations. It enhances students' procedural knowledge and practical skills in complex contexts, complements subject knowledge and builds confidence., Conclusion: The results provide initial evidence that AR simulation is an effective learning strategy for emergency management preparedness. Background: Catheter shaping is vital in cerebral aneurysm coil embolization; however, understanding three-dimensional (3D) vascular structures on two-dimensional screens is challenging. Although 3D-printed vascular models are helpful, they demand time, effort, and sterility. This study explores whether mixed-reality (MR) devices displaying 3D computer graphics (3D-CG) can address these issues., Methods: This study focused on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of seven cases of cerebral aneurysms. Head-mounted display (HMD) and spatial reality display (SRD) MR devices were used, and applications for 3D-CG display at a 1:1 scale and a 3D-CG control panel were developed. Catheters shaped using a 3D printer, HMD, and SRD were inserted into hollow models to assess their accessibility and positioning., Results: The concordance rate of the 3D printer and HMD groups in terms of accessibility to the aneurysm was 71.4 %, while that of the 3D printer and SRD group was 85.7 %, and that of the HMD and SRD group was 85.7 %. Evidence-based interventions are needed to promote engagement in physical activity. Audio-visual stimuli are frequently employed to enhance the exercise experience. Nonetheless, there is a paucity of research that examines the qualities of technological devices that are employed. Using the Embodiment-Presence-Interactivity Cube (Flavián et al., 2019) as a guiding conceptual framework, the aim of this registered report was to examine how each dimension of the cube (i.e., embodiment, presence and interactivity) influenced a range of exercise-related affective and perceptual variables. A counterbalanced within-subjects design was employed (N = 24). Participants completed 20-min exercise bouts on a cycle ergometer under four conditions: Television, augmented reality, 360° video and virtual reality. A repeated-measures ANOVA indicated a significant Condition × Timepoint interaction for affective valence (p = 0.046), with greater embodiment offered by technological devices leading to more positive responses. Analyses also indicated main effects of condition for exercise enjoyment, remembered pleasure and forecasted pleasure, with greater presence of technological devices leading to more positive responses. Background: The use of simulation has the potential to accelerate the learning curves and increase the efficiency of surgeons. However, there is currently a scarcity in models dedicated to skull base surgical approaches. Thus, the objective of this study was to develop a cost-effective mixed reality system consisting of an ultrarealistic physical model and augmented reality and evaluate its use in training surgeons on the retrosigmoid approach., Methods: The virtual models were developed from images of patients with vestibular schwannoma. The tumor was mirrored to allow bilateral approaches and the model has drawers for repositioning structures, allowing reuse of the material and cost reduction. Pre and posttest assessments were applied to 10 residents and young neurosurgeons, divided into control and test groups. Only the control group was exposed to the model. The difference in scores obtained by participants before and after exposure to the models was considered for analysis and participants in the control group answered self-satisfaction questionnaires., Results: The mean differences were 4.80 in the control group (95% credibility intervals=1.08-9.79) and 5.43 in the test group (95% credibility intervals=1.67-8.20). The average score of the self-satisfaction questionnaires was 24.0 (23-25)., Conclusions: The ultrarealistic model efficiently allowed retromastoid access to the cerebellopontine angle. A tendency toward greater gains in performance in the group exposed to the model was verified. Background: Patients may be educated about facial fractures using two-dimensional computed tomography (2DCT); however, three-dimensional mixed reality (3DMR) goggles may improve patient education by delivering content in an immersive environment. Objective: To compare the effectiveness of 2DCT and 3DMR formats used for patient education on facial fractures, as measured by surveys. Methods: In this prospective, randomized, crossover study, video tutorials intended for facial fracture informed consent were created in 2DCT and 3DMR formats from a single CT data set of a zygomaticomaxillary complex (ZMC) fracture. Subjects were randomly assigned into two groups. Group 1 ( n  = 25) viewed the 2DCT tutorial, answered self-assessment and information recall surveys, viewed the 3DMR tutorial, repeated the prior surveys as well as a comparison survey. Group 2 ( n  = 25) followed the same sequence but viewed the 3DMR tutorial and then the 2DCT tutorial. Results: Participants ( n  = 50) had no differences in age (group 1-51.9 years/standard deviation [SD] 20.9; group 2-44.7 years/SD 17.6 years; p  = 0.223), gender (group 1-10 male/15 female; group 2-11 male/14 female; p  = 0.999), college education level (group 1-25 yes; group 2-25 yes; p  = 0.844), or prior 2DCT or 3DMR experience (group 1-9 yes/16 no; group 2-13 yes/12 no; p  = 0.393). The 3DMR format was preferred over 2DCT ( p  < 0.05), and it was reported to enhance understanding as compared to 2DCT ( p  < 0.05). No differences for information recall were noted ( p  = 0.753). Conclusion: In this study, participants preferred 3DMR goggles over 2DCT for a simulated ZMC fracture-informed consent.

Purpose of Review: This review provides an overview of the current and future role of artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual reality (VR) in addressing the complexities inherent to the diagnosis, classification, and management of headache disorders., Recent Findings: Through machine learning and natural language processing approaches, AI offers unprecedented opportunities to identify patterns within complex and voluminous datasets, including brain imaging data. This technology has demonstrated promise in optimizing diagnostic approaches to headache disorders and automating their classification, an attribute particularly beneficial for non-specialist providers. Furthermore, AI can enhance headache disorder management by enabling the forecasting of acute events of interest, such as migraine headaches or medication overuse, and by guiding treatment selection based on insights from predictive modeling. Additionally, AI may facilitate the streamlining of treatment efficacy monitoring and enable the automation of real-time treatment parameter adjustments. VR technology, on the other hand, offers controllable and immersive experiences, thus providing a unique avenue for the investigation of the sensory-perceptual symptomatology associated with certain headache disorders. Moreover, recent studies suggest that VR, combined with biofeedback, may serve as a viable adjunct to conventional treatment. Addressing challenges to the widespread adoption of AI and VR in headache medicine, including reimbursement policies and data privacy concerns, mandates collaborative efforts from stakeholders to enable the equitable, safe, and effective utilization of these technologies in advancing headache disorder care. Background: Exercise has positive effects on psychological well-being, with team sports often associated with superior mental health compared to individual sports. Augmented reality (AR) technology has the potential to convert solitary exercise into multi-person exercise. Given the role of oxytocin in mediating the psychological benefits of exercise and sports, this study aimed to investigate the impact of AR-based multi-person exercise on mood and salivary oxytocin levels., Methods: Fourteen participants underwent three distinct regimens: non-exercise (Rest), standard solitary cycling exercise (Ex), and AR-based multi-person cycling exercise (Ex+AR). In both Ex and Ex+AR conditions, participants engaged in cycling at a self-regulated pace to maintain a Rating of Perceived Exertion of 10. In the Ex+AR condition, participants' avatars were projected onto a tablet screen, allowing them to cycle alongside ten other virtual avatars in an AR environment. Mood states and saliva samples were collected before and immediately after each 10-minute regimen. Subsequently, salivary oxytocin levels were measured., Results: Notably, only the Ex+AR condition significantly improved mood states associated with depression-dejection and exhibited a non-significant trend toward suppressing anger-hostility in participants. Moreover, the Ex+AR condition led to a significant elevation in salivary oxytocin levels, while the Ex condition showed a non-significant trend toward an increase. However, changes in salivary oxytocin did not show a significant correlation with changes in mood states., Conclusions: These findings suggest that Ex+AR enhances mood states and promotes oxytocin release. Over the past few decades, instrumentation and techniques for total knee arthroplasty have evolved from conventional manual tools to a wide range of technologies, including calibrated guides for accurate bone cuts and alignment, smart tools, dynamic intraoperative sensors for soft tissue balancing, patient-specific guides, computer navigation, and robotics. This review is intended to provide an overview of the latest advancements in total knee arthroplasty technology, address potential challenges and solutions related to the application of these technologies, and explore their limitations., (Copyright © 2024. Background: Ventriculostomy, one of the most common neurosurgical procedures, involves inserting a draining catheter into the brain's ventricular system to alleviate excessive cerebrospinal fluid accumulation. Traditionally, this procedure has relied on freehand techniques guided by anatomical landmarks, which have shown a high rate of misplacement. Recent advancements in virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies have opened up new possibilities in the field. This comprehensive review aims to analyze the existing literature, examine the diverse applications of VR and AR in ventriculostomy procedures, address their limitations, and propose potential future directions., Methods: A systematic search was conducted in Web of Science and PubMed databases to identify studies employing VR and AR technologies in ventriculostomy procedures. Review papers, non-English records, studies unrelated to VR/AR technologies in ventriculostomy, and supplementary documents were excluded. In total 29 papers were included in the review., Results: The development of various VR and AR systems aimed at enhancing the ventriculostomy procedure are categorized according to the Data, Visualization and View taxonomy. The study investigates the data utilized by these systems, the visualizations employed, and the virtual or augmented environments created. Furthermore, the surgical scenarios and applications of each method, as well as the validation and evaluation metrics used, are discussed., Discussion: The review delves into the fundamental challenges encountered in the implementation of VR and AR systems in ventriculostomy. During cycling activities, cyclists often monitor a variety of information such as heart rate, distance, and navigation using a bike-mounted phone or cyclocomputer. In many cases, cyclists also ride on sidewalks or paths that contain pedestrians and other obstructions such as potholes, so monitoring information on a bike-mounted interface can slow the cyclist down or cause accidents and injury. In this article, we present HazARdSnap, an augmented reality-based information delivery approach that improves the ease of access to cycling information and at the same time preserves the user's awareness of hazards. To do so, we implemented real-time outdoor hazard detection using a combination of computer vision and motion and position data from a head mounted display (HMD). We then developed an algorithm that snaps information to detected hazards when they are also viewed so that users can simultaneously view both rendered virtual cycling information and the real-world cues such as depth, position, time to hazard, and speed that are needed to assess and avoid hazards. Results from a study with 24 participants that made use of real-world cycling and virtual hazards showed that both HazARdSnap and forward-fixed augmented reality (AR) user interfaces (UIs) can effectively help cyclists access virtual information without having to look down, which resulted in fewer collisions (51% and 43% reduction compared to baseline, respectively) with virtual hazards.

Background: Virtual and augmented reality surgical simulators, integrated with machine learning, are becoming essential for training psychomotor skills, and analyzing surgical performance. Despite the promise of methods like the Connection Weights Algorithm, the small sample sizes (small number of participants (N)) typical of these trials challenge the generalizability and robustness of models. Approaches like data augmentation and transfer learning from models trained on similar surgical tasks address these limitations., Objective: To demonstrate the efficacy of artificial neural network and transfer learning algorithms in evaluating virtual surgical performances, applied to a simulated oblique lateral lumbar interbody fusion technique in an augmented and virtual reality simulator., Design: The study developed and integrated artificial neural network algorithms within a novel simulator platform, using data from the simulated tasks to generate 276 performance metrics across motion, safety, and efficiency. Innovatively, it applies transfer learning from a pre-trained ANN model developed for a similar spinal simulator, enhancing the training process, and addressing the challenge of small datasets., Setting: Musculoskeletal Biomechanics Research Lab; Neurosurgical Simulation and Artificial Intelligence Learning Centre, McGill University, Montreal, Canada., Participants: Twenty-seven participants divided into 3 groups: 9 post-residents, 6 senior and 12 junior residents., Results: Two models, a stand-alone model trained from scratch and another leveraging transfer learning, were trained on nine selected surgical metrics achieving 75 % and 87.5 % testing accuracy respectively., Conclusions: This study presents a novel blueprint for addressing limited datasets in surgical simulations through the strategic use of transfer learning and data augmentation. It also evaluates and reinforces the application of the Connection Weights Algorithm from our previous publication. Introduction: The uses of on-demand, interactive tablet-based surgical training environments are of interest as potential resources for both the acquisition and maintenance of rarely performed, critical procedures for expeditionary surgical care. This study examined the effectiveness of a tablet-based augmented reality (AR) procedural training environment for lower leg fasciotomy with a cohort of novice surgical trainees in (1) procedural knowledge, (2) tablet-based procedural skills, (3) tablet-based procedural time, and (4) procedural performance on a cadaver. We hypothesized that engaging with the AR procedural training would increase procedural knowledge and tablet-based skills and procedural time. We hypothesized that the tablet-based AR training environment would be insufficient to acquire the ability to perform lower leg fasciotomy on a cadaver., Materials and Methods: This study was approved as exempt by the Institutional Review Board at USU. Surgical interns, sub-interns, and independent duty corpsman (n = 30) with no prior lower leg fasciotomy experience voluntarily participated. Tablet-based training activities included pre-training assessment, engagement with instruction, interactive procedural practice, and post-training assessment. Tablet-based knowledge assessment included 17 multiple choice questions covering concepts, reasoning, and judgment associated with the procedure. Tablet-based procedural completion and time were assessed within the training environment. Within 1 week of completing the tablet activities, participants were assessed by fellowship-trained trauma surgeons while performing cadaver-based lower leg fasciotomy. Statistical analysis included paired t-tests and effect size (Cohen's d). Statistical significance was set at P < .05., Results: Tablet-based AR procedural training significantly improved procedural knowledge (P < .001), tablet-based procedural skills (P < .001), and reduced tablet-based procedural time (P < .002). Effect sizes were very large for tablet-based procedural knowledge (d = 1.75) and skills (d = 3.2) and small (d = 0.42) for procedural time. There were no significant effects of procedural knowledge, tablet-based procedural skills, or time on cadaver-based performance. No participant was able to accurately and independently complete lower leg fasciotomy procedure on a cadaver., Conclusions: Tablet-based AR procedural training improved procedural knowledge and tablet-based skills; however, those gains did not transfer to the ability to perform the procedure on a cadaver. The tablet's limited AR interface did not support the acquisition of requisite surgical technique, tissue handling, and decision-making in novice surgical trainees. Experienced surgeons may have different outcomes because their mature understanding of surgical constructs would allow extrapolation of abilities to other procedural contexts. Introduction: Variability in return-to-duty (RTD) decision-making following mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is a threat to troop readiness. Current RTD assessments lack military-specific tasks and quantitative outcomes to inform stakeholders of a service member's (SM) capacity to successfully perform military duties. Augmented reality (AR), which places digital assets in a user's physical environment, provides a technological vehicle to deliver military-relevant tasks to a SM to be used in the RTD decision-making process. In addition to delivering digital content, AR headsets provide biomechanical data that can be used to assess the integrity of the central nervous system in movement control following mTBI. The objective of this study was to quantify cognitive and motor performance on an AR rifle qualification test (RQT) in a group of neurologically healthy military SMs., Materials and Methods: Data were collected from 111 healthy SMs who completed a basic (single-task) and complex (dual-task) RQT with a simulated M4 rifle. The complex scenario required the SM to perform the RQT while simultaneously answering arithmetic problems. Position data from the AR headset were used to capture postural sway, and the built-in microphone gathered responses to the arithmetic problems., Results: There were no differences in the number of targets hit, trigger pull reaction time, and transition time from kneeling to standing between the basic and complex scenarios. A significant worsening in postural sway following kneel-to-stand transition was observed in the complex scenario. The average reaction time to answer the arithmetic problems was nearly 2 times slower than the average reaction time to pull the trigger to a displayed target in the complex scenario., Conclusion: The complex scenario provoked dual-task interference in SMs as evidenced by worsening postural sway and reaction time differences between the cognitive and motor tasks. An AR RQT provides objective and quantitative outcomes during a military-specific task. Molecular case studies (MCSs) are open educational resources that use a storytelling approach to engage students in biomolecular structure-function explorations, at the interface of biology and chemistry. Although MCSs are developed for a particular target audience with specific learning goals, they are suitable for implementation in multiple disciplinary course contexts. Detailed teaching notes included in the case study help instructors plan and prepare for their implementation in diverse contexts. A newly developed MCS was simultaneously implemented in a biochemistry and a molecular parasitology course at two different institutions. Instructors participating in this cross-institutional and multidisciplinary implementation collaboratively identified the need for quick and effective ways to bridge the gap between the MCS authors' vision and the implementing instructor's interpretation of the case-related molecular structure-function discussions. Augmented reality (AR) is an interactive and engaging experience that has been used effectively in teaching molecular sciences. Its accessibility and ease-of-use with smart devices (e.g., phones and tablets) make it an attractive option for expediting and improving both instructor preparation and classroom implementation of MCSs. In this work, we report the incorporation of ready-to-use AR objects as checkpoints in the MCS. Interacting with these AR objects facilitated instructor preparation, reduced students' cognitive load, and provided clear expectations for their learning. Based on our classroom observations, we propose that the incorporation of AR in MCSs can facilitate its successful implementation, improve the classroom experience for educators and students, and make MCSs more broadly accessible in diverse curricular settings., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.
