Climate change is altering the timing of seasonal events for many taxa. There is limited understanding of how northward/southward songbird migration follows or is limited by the latitudinal progression of seasonal transitions. Consistent environmental conditions that migrating birds encounter across latitudes likely represent or correlate with important resources or limiting factors for migration. We tested whether migratory passage-observed via radar-consistently tracked land surface variables and phenophases across latitudes in the US Central Flyway in both spring and fall. The daily temperatures, precipitation and vegetation greenness occurring on 10%, 50% and 90% cumulative passage dates changed substantially with latitude, indicating that most migrants experienced rapidly changing conditions as they headed north or south. Temperature did not limit the progression of migration in either season. Peak spring migration in the southern US occurred nearly 40 days after the spring green wave, the northward progression of vegetation growth, but nearly caught up to green-up at 48° N. Spring migration phenology may have evolved to prioritize earlier arrival for breeding. Across all latitudes, peak fall migration coincided with the same land surface phenophase, an interval of 26 days prior to dormancy onset. Migrants may rely on phenological events in vegetation during fall stopovers. Considering that (a) migratory passage tracked fall land surface phenology across latitudes at a continental scale, (b) previous studies at local scales have demonstrated the importance of fruit during fall migratory stopover and (c) fruiting phenology in North America is occurring later over time while fall migration is advancing, the potential for mismatch between fall fruiting and bird migration phenology urgently needs further investigation., (© 2024 The Authors. With the continuous advancement of autonomous driving and monitoring technologies, there is increasing attention on non-intrusive target monitoring and recognition. This paper proposes an ArcFace SE-attention model-agnostic meta-learning approach (AS-MAML) by integrating attention mechanisms into residual networks for pedestrian gait recognition using frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) millimeter-wave radar through meta-learning. We enhance the feature extraction capability of the base network using channel attention mechanisms and integrate the additive angular margin loss function (ArcFace loss) into the inner loop of MAML to constrain inner loop optimization and improve radar discrimination. Then, this network is used to classify small-sample micro-Doppler images obtained from millimeter-wave radar as the data source for pose recognition. Experimental tests were conducted on pose estimation and image classification tasks. The results demonstrate significant detection and recognition performance, with an accuracy of 94.5%, accompanied by a 95% confidence interval. Additionally, on the open-source dataset DIAT- μ RadHAR, which is specially processed to increase classification difficulty, the network achieves a classification accuracy of 85.9%.

Short sprints are predominantly assessed using timing gates and analyzed through parameters of the mono-exponential equation, including estimated maximal sprinting speed (MSS) and relative acceleration (TAU), derived maximum acceleration (MAC), and relative propulsive maximal power (PMAX), further referred to as the No Correction model. However, the frequently recommended flying start technique introduces a bias during parameter estimation. To correct this, two additional models (Estimated TC and Estimated FD) were proposed. To estimate model precision and sensitivity to detect the change, 31 basketball players executed multiple 30 m sprints. Athlete performance was simultaneously measured by a laser gun and timing gates positioned at 5, 10, 20, and 30 m. Short sprint parameters were estimated using a laser gun, representing the criterion measure, and five different timing gate models, representing the practical measures. Only the MSS parameter demonstrated a high agreement between the laser gun and timing gate models, using the percent mean absolute difference (%MAD) estimator (%MAD < 10%). The MSS parameter also showed the highest sensitivity, using the minimum detectable change estimator (%MDC95), with an estimated %MDC95 < 17%. Interestingly, sensitivity was the highest for the No Correction model (%MDC95 < 7%). All other parameters and models demonstrated an unsatisfying level of sensitivity. Thus, sports practitioners should be cautious when using timing gates to estimate maximum acceleration indices and changes in their respective levels.

Micro-Doppler effect is a vital feature of a target that reflects its oscillatory motions apart from bulk motion and provides an important evidence for target recognition with radars. However, establishing the micro-Doppler database poses a great challenge, since plenty of experiments are required to get the micro-Doppler signatures of different targets for the purpose of analyses and interpretations with radars, which are dramatically limited by high cost and time-consuming. Aiming to overcome these limits, a low-cost and powerful simulation platform of the micro-Doppler effects is proposed based on time-domain digital coding metasurface (TDCM). Owing to the outstanding capabilities of TDCM in generating and manipulating nonlinear harmonics during wave-matter interactions, it enables to supply rich and high-precision electromagnetic signals with multiple micro-Doppler frequencies to describe the micro-motions of different objects, which are especially favored for the training of artificial intelligence algorithms in automatic target recognition and benefit a host of applications like imaging and biosensing., (© 2024 The Authors. Pulse repetition interval modulation (PRIM) is integral to radar identification in modern electronic support measure (ESM) and electronic intelligence (ELINT) systems. Various distortions, including missing pulses, spurious pulses, unintended jitters, and noise from radar antenna scans, often hinder the accurate recognition of PRIM. This research introduces a novel three-stage approach for PRIM recognition, emphasizing the innovative use of PRI sound. A transfer learning-aided deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) is initially used for feature extraction. This is followed by an extreme learning machine (ELM) for real-time PRIM classification. Finally, a gray wolf optimizer (GWO) refines the network's robustness. To evaluate the proposed method, we develop a real experimental dataset consisting of sound of six common PRI patterns. We utilized eight pre-trained DCNN architectures for evaluation, with VGG16 and ResNet50V2 notably achieving recognition accuracies of 97.53% and 96.92%. Integrating ELM and GWO further optimized the accuracy rates to 98.80% and 97.58. In this paper, a 3D conformal meta-lens designed for manipulating electromagnetic beams via height-to-phase control is proposed. The structure consists of a 40 × 20 array of tunable unit cells fabricated using 3D printing, enabling full 360° phase compensation. A novel automatic synthesizing method (ASM) with an integrated optimization process based on genetic algorithm (GA) is adopted here to create the meta-lens. Simulation using CST Microwave Studio and MATLAB reveals the antenna's beam deflection capability by adjusting phase compensations for each unit cell. Various beam scanning techniques are demonstrated, including single-beam, dual-beam generation, and orbital angular momentum (OAM) beam deflection at different angles of 0°, 10°, 15°, 25°, 30°, and 45°. A 3D-printed prototype of the dual-beam feature has been fabricated and measured for validation purposes, with good agreement between both simulation and measurement results, with small discrepancies due to 3D printing's low resolution and fabrication errors. This meta-lens shows promise for low-cost, high-gain beam deflection in mm-wave wireless communication systems, especially for sensing applications, with potential for wider 2D beam scanning and independent beam deflection enhancements.

The article presents the analysis, design, and low-cost implementation of application-specific AD converters for M-sequence-based UWB applications to minimize and integrate the whole UWB sensor system. Therefore, the main goal of this article is to integrate the AD converter's own design with the UWB analog part into the system-in-package (SiP) or directly into the system-on-a-chip (SoC), which cannot be implemented with commercial AD converters, or which would be disproportionately expensive. Based on the current and used UWB sensor system requirements, to achieve the maximum possible bandwidth in the proposed semiconductor technology, a parallel converter structure is designed and presented in this article. Moreover, 5-bit and 4-bit parallel flash AD converters were initially designed as part of the research and design of UWB M-sequence radar systems for specific applications, and are briefly introduced in this article. The requirements of the newly proposed specific UWB M-sequence systems were established based on the knowledge gained from these initial designs. After thorough testing and evaluation of the concept of the early proposed AD converters for these specific UWB M-sequence systems, the design of a new AD converter was initiated. After confirming sufficient characteristics based on the requirements of UWB M-sequence systems for specific applications, a 7-bit AD converter in low-cost 0.35 µm SiGe BiCMOS technology from AMS was designed, fabricated, and presented in this article. The proposed 7-bit AD converter achieves the following parameters: ENOB = 6.4 bits, SINAD = 38 dB, SFDR = 42 dBc, INL = ±2-bit LSB, and DNL = ±1.5 LSB. The maximum sampling rate reaches 1.4 Gs/s, the power consumption at 20 Ms/s is 1050 mW, and at 1.4 Gs/s is 1290 mW, with a power supply of -3.3 V.

This contribution focuses on the detection of tracer particles within non-homogeneous bulk media, aiming to enhance insights into particulate systems. Polarimetric radar measurements are employed, utilizing cross-polarizing channels in order to mitigate interference from bulk media reflections. To distinguish the tracer particle in the measurements, a resonant cross-polarizing structure is constructed, facilitating the isolation of frequency signatures from the surrounding bulk clutter. In addition to characterizing the bulk and tracer components, this study provides a detailed presentation and discussion of the measurement setup, along with the employed signal processing methods. The effectiveness of the proposed methods is demonstrated through comprehensive measurements, where a tracer particle is systematically positioned at various locations. The results affirm the feasibility and efficacy of the approach, highlighting its applicability for enhanced dynamic monitoring in particulate systems within industrial processes.

Activity recognition is one of the significant technologies accompanying the development of the Internet of Things (IoT). It can help in recording daily life activities or reporting emergencies, thus improving the user's quality of life and safety, and even easing the workload of caregivers. This study proposes a human activity recognition (HAR) system based on activity data obtained via the micro-Doppler effect, combining a two-stream one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN) with a bidirectional gated recurrent unit (BiGRU). Initially, radar sensor data are used to generate information related to time and frequency responses using short-time Fourier transform (STFT). Subsequently, the magnitudes and phase values are calculated and fed into the 1D-CNN and Bi-GRU models to extract spatial and temporal features for subsequent model training and activity recognition. Additionally, we propose a simple cross-channel operation (CCO) to facilitate the exchange of magnitude and phase features between parallel convolutional layers. An open dataset collected through radar, named Rad-HAR, is employed for model training and performance evaluation. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed 1D-CNN+CCO-BiGRU model demonstrated superior performance, achieving an impressive accuracy rate of 98.2%. This outperformance of existing systems with the radar sensor underscores the proposed model's potential applicability in real-world scenarios, marking a significant advancement in the field of HAR within the IoT framework.

Objectives: Systematically measuring the work environment of healthcare employees is key to continuously improving the quality of care and addressing staff shortages. In this study, we systematically analyse the responses to the one open-ended question posed in the Dutch version of the Culture of Care Barometer (CoCB-NL) to examine (1) if the responses offered new insights into healthcare employees' perceptions of their work environment and (2) if the original CoCB had any themes missing., Design: Retrospective text analysis using Rigorous and Accelerated Data Reduction technique., Setting: University hospital in the Netherlands using the CoCB-NL as part of the annual employee survey., Participants: All hospital employees were invited to participate in the study (N=14 671). In total, 2287 employees responded to the open-ended question., Results: 2287 comments were analysed. Comments that contained more than one topic were split according to topic, adding to the total (n=2915). Of this total, 372 comments were excluded because they lacked content or respondents indicated they had nothing to add. Subsequently, 2543 comments were allocated to 33 themes. Most comments (n=2113) addressed the 24 themes related to the close-ended questions in the CoCB-NL. The themes most commented on concerned questions on 'organisational support'. The remaining 430 comments covered nine additional themes that addressed concerns about work environment factors (team connectedness, team effectiveness, corporate vision, administrative burden and performance pressure) and themes (diversity and inclusion, legal frameworks and collective bargaining, resilience and work-life balance, and personal matters)., Conclusions: Analysing responses to the open-ended question in the CoCB-NL led to new insights into relevant elements of the work environment and missing themes in the COCB-NL. This paper proposes a new approach for wide angle monitoring of vital signs in smart home applications. The person is tracked using an indoor radar. Upon detecting the person to be static, the radar automatically focuses its beam on that location, and subsequently breathing and heart rates are extracted from the reflected signals using continuous wavelet transform (CWT) analysis. In this way, leveraging the radar's on-chip processor enables real-time monitoring of vital signs across varying angles. In our experiment, we employ a commercial multi-input multi-output (MIMO) millimeter-wave FMCW radar to monitor vital signs within a range of 1.15 to 2.3 m and an angular span of -44.8 to +44.8 deg. In the Bland-Altman plot, the measured results indicate the average difference of -1.5 and 0.06 beats per minute (BPM) relative to the reference for heart rate and breathing rate, respectively.

The adoption of telehealth has soared, and with that the acceptance of Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) and virtual care. A review of the literature illustrates, however, that poor device usability can impact the generated data when using Patient-Generated Health Data (PGHD) devices, such as wearables or home use medical devices, when used outside a health facility. The Pi-CON methodology is introduced to overcome these challenges and guide the definition of user-friendly and intuitive devices in the future. Pi-CON stands for passive, continuous, and non-contact, and describes the ability to acquire health data, such as vital signs, continuously and passively with limited user interaction and without attaching any sensors to the patient. The paper highlights the advantages of Pi-CON by leveraging various sensors and techniques, such as radar, remote photoplethysmography, and infrared. It illustrates potential concerns and discusses future applications Pi-CON could be used for, including gait and fall monitoring by installing an omnipresent sensor based on the Pi-CON methodology. This would allow automatic data collection once a person is recognized, and could be extended with an integrated gateway so multiple cameras could be installed to enable data feeds to a cloud-based interface, allowing clinicians and family members to monitor patient health status remotely at any time.

Background: Metformin is a biguanide hyperglycemic agent used to manage non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. Adverse reactions include mainly mild gastrointestinal adverse effects, but severe complications, such as metformin-associated lactic acidosis (MALA) can occur. Metformin is excreted renally and, therefore, not recommended in patients with renal impairment. The reported incidence of MALA is 3 cases per 100,000 patient-years., Case Report: A 79-year-old woman with a complex medical history, including end-stage renal disease on dialysis and type 2 diabetes, presented to the emergency department (ED) for altered mental status. Prior to arrival, she was found to be hypoglycemic. Her laboratory results were significant for creatinine of 6.56 mg/dL and an anion gap of 52 mmol/L. The venous blood gas revealed a venous pH of 6.857 [reference range (7.32-7.43)], pCO 2 of 15.9 mm Hg (40.6-60 mm Hg), HCO 3 of 2.7 mmol/L (21-30 mmol/L), lactate of 27 mmol/L (0.5-2 mmol/L), and ammonia of 233 µmol/L. The patient was dialyzed emergently in the ED; repeat laboratory test results showed blood urea nitrogen of 10 mg/dL, creatinine of 1.65 mg/dL, carbon dioxide of 26 mmol/L, and anion gap of 13 mmol/L. The repeat ammonia was 16 µmol/L. The patient's metabolic encephalopathy resolved, and she was discharged home on hospital day 3. WHY SHOULD AN EMERGENCY PHYSICIAN BE AWARE OF THIS?: MALA has a high mortality rate (36%). Laboratory markers have not been found to be a reliable predictor of mortality. Sodium bicarbonate is controversial, but a pH < 7.15 indicates consideration of its use. A pH < 7.1 and a lactate level > 20 mmol/L indicate the need for emergent hemodialysis. Photonic radar, a cornerstone in the innovative applications of microwave photonics, emerges as a pivotal technology for future Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). Offering enhanced accuracy and reliability, it stands at the forefront of target detection and recognition across varying weather conditions. Recent advancements have concentrated on augmenting radar performance through high-speed, wide-band signal processing-a direct benefit of modern photonics' attributes such as EMI immunity, minimal transmission loss, and wide bandwidth. Our work introduces a cutting-edge photonic radar system that employs Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) signals, synergized with Mode Division and Wavelength Division Multiplexing (MDM-WDM). This fusion not only enhances target detection and recognition capabilities across diverse weather scenarios, including various intensities of fog and solar scintillations, but also demonstrates substantial resilience against solar noise. Furthermore, we have integrated machine learning techniques, including Decision Tree, Extremely Randomized Trees (ERT), and Random Forest classifiers, to substantially enhance target recognition accuracy. The results are telling: an accuracy of 91.51%, high sensitivity (91.47%), specificity (97.17%), and an F1 Score of 91.46%. Background: Pneumonia is the most common intensive care unit (ICU)-acquired infection and source of potential sepsis in ICU populations but can be difficult to diagnose in real-time. Despite limited data, rapid initiation of antibiotic agents is endorsed by society guidelines. We hypothesized that a post hoc analysis of a recent randomized pilot study would show no difference between two antibiotic initiation strategies. Patients and Methods: The recent Trial of Antibiotic Restraint in Presumed Pneumonia (TARPP) was a pragmatic cluster-randomized pilot of antibiotic initiation strategies for patients with suspected ICU-acquired pneumonia. Participating ICUs were cluster-randomized to either an immediate initiation protocol or a specimen-initiated protocol where a gram stain was required for initiation of antibiotics. Patients in the study were divided into one of seven mutually exclusive outcome rankings (desirability of outcome ranking; DOOR): (1) Survival, No Pneumonia, No adverse events; (2) Survival, Pneumonia, No adverse events; (3) Survival, No Pneumonia, ventilator-free-alive days ≤14; (4) Survival, Pneumonia, ventilator-free-alive days ≤14; (5) Survival, No Pneumonia, Subsequent episode of suspected pneumonia; (6) Survival, Pneumonia, Subsequent episode of suspected pneumonia; and (7) Death. These rankings were further refined using the duration of antibiotics prescribed for pneumonia (response adjusted for antibiotic risk; RADAR). Results: There were 186 patients enrolled in the study. After applying the DOOR analysis, a randomly selected patient was equally likely to have a better outcome in specimen-initiated arm as in the immediate initiation arm (DOOR probability: 50.8%; 95% confidence interval [CI], 42.7%-58.9%). Outcome probabilities were similar after applying the RADAR analysis (52.5%; 95% CI, 44.2%-60.6%; p = 0.31). Conclusions: We found that patients for whom antibiotic agents were withheld until there was objective evidence (specimen-initiated group) had similar outcome rankings to patients for whom antibiotic agents were started immediately. This supports the findings of the TARPP pilot trial and provides further evidence for equipoise between these two treatment strategies.

The potential increases in carbon stocks in arid regions due to recent shrub encroachment have attracted extensive interest among both ecologists and carbon policy analysts. Quantifying the shrub root biomass amount in these ecosystems is essential to understanding the ecological changes occurring. In this paper, we proposed a simple nondestructive method for estimating the coarse lateral root biomass of shrubs based on the root counts obtained from ground-penetrating radar (GPR) radargrams. Root data were gathered via field experiments using GPR with antenna center frequencies of 900 MHz and 400 MHz. Five Caragana microphylla Lam. shrubs of different sizes were selected for measuring objects, and a total of 40 GPR survey lines were established for GPR data acquisition. The soil profile wall excavation method was used to obtain the total root biomass from each radargram. A model for estimating the root biomass was built by establishing the relationship between the root biomass in each profile and the root counts interpreted from the radargrams. According to the mathematical relationship between the root diameter and root biomass, the proxy root radius was derived, which could explain the rationality of the proposed model from the biological mechanism. The established model provided high confidence in estimating the root dry biomass using the GPR data obtained at the two antenna frequencies (R 2 = 0.73 for 900 MHz and R 2 = 0.71 for 400 MHz). The leave-one-out cross-validation results showed that the model exhibits satisfactory performance. Human eye activity has been widely studied in many fields such as psychology, neuroscience, medicine, and human-computer interaction engineering. In previous studies, monitoring of human eye activity mainly depends on electrooculogram (EOG) that requires a contact sensor. This article proposes a novel eye movement monitoring method called continuous wave doppler oculogram (cDOG). Unlike the conventional EOG-based eye movement monitoring methods, cDOG based on continuous wave doppler radar sensor (cDRS) can remotely measure human eye activity without placing electrodes on the head. To verify the feasibility of using cDOG for eye movement monitoring, we first theoretically analyzed the association between the radar signal and the corresponding eye movements measured with EOG. Afterward, we conducted an experiment to compare EOG and cDOG measurements under the conditions of eyes closure and opening. In addition, different eye movement states were considered, including right-left saccade, up-down saccade, eye-blink, and fixation. Several representative time domain and frequency domain features obtained from cDOG and from EOG were compared in these states, allowing us to demonstrate the feasibility of using cDOG for monitoring eye movements. The experimental results show that there is a correlation between cDOG and EOG in the time and frequency domain features, the average time error of single eye movement is less than 280.5 ms, and the accuracy of cDOG in eye movement detection is higher than 92.35%, when the distance between the cDRS and the face is 10 cm and eyes is facing the radar directly.

Background: Individuals with rare kidney diseases account for 5-10% of people with chronic kidney disease, but constitute more than 25% of patients receiving kidney replacement therapy. The National Registry of Rare Kidney Diseases (RaDaR) gathers longitudinal data from patients with these conditions, which we used to study disease progression and outcomes of death and kidney failure., Methods: People aged 0-96 years living with 28 types of rare kidney diseases were recruited from 108 UK renal care facilities. The primary outcomes were cumulative incidence of mortality and kidney failure in individuals with rare kidney diseases, which were calculated and compared with that of unselected patients with chronic kidney disease. Cumulative incidence and Kaplan-Meier survival estimates were calculated for the following outcomes: median age at kidney failure; median age at death; time from start of dialysis to death; and time from diagnosis to estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) thresholds, allowing calculation of time from last eGFR of 75 mL/min per 1·73 m 2 or more to first eGFR of less than 30 mL/min per 1·73 m 2 (the therapeutic trial window)., Findings: Between Jan 18, 2010, and July 25, 2022, 27 285 participants were recruited to RaDaR. Median follow-up time from diagnosis was 9·6 years (IQR 5·9-16·7). RaDaR participants had significantly higher 5-year cumulative incidence of kidney failure than 2·81 million UK patients with all-cause chronic kidney disease (28% vs 1%; p<0·0001), but better survival rates (standardised mortality ratio 0·42 [95% CI 0·32-0·52]; p<0·0001). Median age at kidney failure, median age at death, time from start of dialysis to death, time from diagnosis to eGFR thresholds, and therapeutic trial window all varied substantially between rare diseases., Interpretation: Patients with rare kidney diseases differ from the general population of individuals with chronic kidney disease: they have higher 5-year rates of kidney failure but higher survival than other patients with chronic kidney disease stages 3-5, and so are over-represented in the cohort of patients requiring kidney replacement therapy. Through-wall radar human body pose recognition technology has broad applications in both military and civilian sectors. Identifying the current pose of targets behind walls and predicting subsequent pose changes are significant challenges. Conventional methods typically utilize radar information along with machine learning algorithms such as SVM and random forests to aid in recognition. However, these approaches have limitations, particularly in complex scenarios. In response to this challenge, this paper proposes a cross-modal supervised through-wall radar human body pose recognition method. By integrating information from both cameras and radar, a cross-modal dataset was constructed, and a corresponding deep learning network architecture was designed. During training, the network effectively learned the pose features of targets obscured by walls, enabling accurate pose recognition (e.g., standing, crouching) in scenarios with unknown wall obstructions. The experimental results demonstrated the superiority of the proposed method over traditional approaches, offering an effective and innovative solution for practical through-wall radar applications. The contribution of this study lies in the integration of deep learning with cross-modal supervision, providing new perspectives for enhancing the robustness and accuracy of target pose recognition.

Amplification of wideband high-frequency and microwave signals is a fundamental element within every high-frequency circuit and device. Ultra-wideband (UWB) sensor applications use circuits designed for their specific application. The article presents the analysis, design, and implementation of ultra-wideband differential amplifiers for M-sequence-based UWB applications. The designed differential amplifiers are based on the Cherry-Hooper structure and are implemented in a low-cost 0.35 µm SiGe BiCMOS semiconductor process. The article presents an analysis and realization of several designs focused on different modifications of the Cherry-Hooper amplifier structure. The proposed amplifier modifications are focused on achieving the best result in one main parameter's performance. Amplifier designs modified by capacitive peaking to achieve the largest bandwidth, amplifiers with the lowest possible noise figure, and designs focused on achieving the highest common mode rejection ratio (CMRR) are described. The layout of the differential amplifiers was created and the chip was manufactured and wire-bonded to the QFN package. For evaluation purposes, a high-frequency PCB board was designed. Schematic simulations, post-layout simulations, and measurements of the individual parameters of the designed amplifiers were performed. The designed and fabricated ultra-wideband differential amplifiers have the following parameters: a supply current of 100-160 mA at -3.3 V or 3.3 V, bandwidth from 6 to 12 GHz, gain (at 1 GHz) from 12 to 16 dB, noise figure from 7 to 13 dB, and a common mode rejection ratio of up to 70 dB.

An increasing number of studies on non-contact vital sign detection using radar are now beginning to turn to data-driven neural network approaches rather than traditional signal-processing methods. However, there are few radar datasets available for deep learning due to the difficulty of acquiring and labeling the data, which require specialized equipment and physician collaboration. This paper presents a new model of heartbeat-induced chest wall motion (CWM) with the goal of generating a large amount of simulation data to support deep learning methods. An in-depth analysis of published CWM data collected by the VICON Infrared (IR) motion capture system and continuous wave (CW) radar system during respiratory hold was used to summarize the motion characteristics of each stage within a cardiac cycle. In combination with the physiological properties of the heartbeat, appropriate mathematical functions were selected to describe these movement properties. The model produced simulation data that closely matched the measured data as evaluated by dynamic time warping (DTW) and the root-mean-squared error (RMSE). By adjusting the model parameters, the heartbeat signals of different individuals were simulated. This will accelerate the application of data-driven deep learning methods in radar-based non-contact vital sign detection research and further advance the field.

The potential of microwave Doppler radar in non-contact vital sign detection is significant; however, prevailing radar-based heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) monitoring technologies often necessitate data lengths surpassing 10 s, leading to increased detection latency and inaccurate HRV estimates. To address this problem, this paper introduces a novel network integrating a frequency representation module and a residual in residual module for the precise estimation and tracking of HR from concise time series, followed by HRV monitoring. The network adeptly transforms radar signals from the time domain to the frequency domain, yielding high-resolution spectrum representation within specified frequency intervals. This significantly reduces latency and improves HRV estimation accuracy by using data that are only 4 s in length. This study uses simulation data, Frequency-Modulated Continuous-Wave radar-measured data, and Continuous-Wave radar data to validate the model. Experimental results show that despite the shortened data length, the average heart rate measurement accuracy of the algorithm remains above 95% with no loss of estimation accuracy. This study contributes an efficient heart rate variability estimation algorithm to the domain of non-contact vital sign detection, offering significant practical application value.

Millimeter-wave (mmWave) radars attain high resolution without compromising privacy while being unaffected by environmental factors such as rain, dust, and fog. This study explores the challenges of using mmWave radars for the simultaneous detection of people and small animals, a critical concern in applications like indoor wireless energy transfer systems. This work proposes innovative methodologies for enhancing detection accuracy and overcoming the inherent difficulties posed by differences in target size and volume. In particular, we explore two distinct positioning scenarios that involve up to four mmWave radars in an indoor environment to detect and track both humans and small animals. We compare the outcomes achieved through the implementation of three distinct data-fusion methods. It was shown that using a single radar without the application of a tracking algorithm resulted in a sensitivity of 46.1%. However, this sensitivity significantly increased to 97.10% upon utilizing four radars using with the optimal fusion method and tracking. This improvement highlights the effectiveness of employing multiple radars together with data fusion techniques, significantly enhancing sensitivity and reliability in target detection.

Radar data can provide additional depth information for monocular depth estimation. It provides a cost-effective solution and is robust in various weather conditions, particularly when compared with lidar. Given the sparse and limited vertical field of view of radar signals, existing methods employ either a vertical extension of radar points or the training of a preprocessing neural network to extend sparse radar points under lidar supervision. In this work, we present a novel radar expansion technique inspired by the joint bilateral filter, tailored for radar-guided monocular depth estimation. Our approach is motivated by the synergy of spatial and range kernels within the joint bilateral filter. Unlike traditional methods that assign a weighted average of nearby pixels to the current pixel, we expand sparse radar points by calculating a confidence score based on the values of spatial and range kernels. Additionally, we propose the use of a range-aware window size for radar expansion instead of a fixed window size in the image plane. Our proposed method effectively increases the number of radar points from an average of 39 points in a raw radar frame to an average of 100 K points. Notably, the expanded radar exhibits fewer intrinsic errors when compared with raw radar and previous methodologies. To validate our approach, we assess our proposed depth estimation model on the nuScenes dataset. Comparative evaluations with existing radar-guided depth estimation models demonstrate its state-of-the-art performance.

Monitoring ground deformation in industrial parks is of great importance for the economic development of urban areas. However, limited research has been conducted on the deformation mechanism in industrial parks, and there is a lack of integrated monitoring and prediction models. Therefore, this study proposes a comprehensive monitoring and prediction model for industrial parks, utilizing time-series Interferometry Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) technology and the Whale Optimization Algorithm-Back Propagation (WOA-BP) neural network algorithm. Taking Yinxi Industrial Park in Baiyin District as a case study, we used 68 scenes of Sentinel-1A ascending and descending orbit data from June 2018 to April 2021. The Stanford Method for Persistent Scatterers-Permanent Scatterers (StaMPS-PS) and the Small Baseline Subsets-Interferometry Synthetic Aperture Radar (SBAS-InSAR) technologies were employed to obtain the surface deformation information of the park. The deformation information obtained by the two technologies was cross-validated in terms of temporal and spatial distribution, and the vertical and east-west deformation of the park was obtained by combining the ascending and descending orbit data. The results show that the deformation feature points in the line of sight (LOS) direction obtained by the two technologies have a high consistency in spatial distribution, using the ascending orbit data as an example. Additionally, the SBAS-InSAR technology was used to obtain the east-west and vertical deformation results of the park after merging the ascending and descending orbit data for the same period. It was found that the park is mainly affected by vertical deformation, with a maximum subsidence rate of 14.67 mm/yr. The subsidence areas correspond to the deformation positions observed in field survey photos. Based on the ascending orbit deformation data, the two technologies were validated with 585 points of the same latitude and longitude, and the coefficient of determination R 2 was found to be 0.82, with a root mean square error (RMSE) of 2.20 mm/a. The deformation rates were also highly consistent. Due to the 47% increase in the number of sampling points provided by the StaMPS-PS technique compared to the SBAS-InSAR technique, the former was found to be more applicable in the industrial park. Based on the ground deformation mechanism in the park, we combined the StaMPS-PS technique with the WOA-BP neural network to construct a deformation zone prediction model. We conducted predictive studies on the deformation zones of buildings and roads within the park, and the results showed that the WOA-optimized BP neural network achieved higher accuracy and lower overall error compared to the unoptimized network. Finally, we analyzed and discussed the geological conditions and inducing factors of ground deformation in the park, providing a reference for a better understanding of the deformation mechanism and early warning of disasters in the industrial park., (© 2024. The study of nocturnal bird migration brings observational challenges because of reduced visibility and observability of birds at night. Remote sensing tools, especially radars, have long been the preferred choice of scientists to study nocturnal migrations. A major downside of these remote sensing tools is the lack of species-level information. With technological advances in recent decades and with improved accessibility and affordability of acoustic tools, sound recordings have steeply increased in popularity. In Europe, there is no exhaustive qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the content of such acoustic databases and therefore the value for migration science and migration-related applications, such as bird collision hazard assessments, is mostly unknown. In the present work we compared migration schedules estimated from citizen science data with quantitative temporal occurrence of species in four years of acoustic recordings. Furthermore, we contrasted acoustic recordings with citizen science observations and weather radar data from one spring and one autumn season to assess the qualitative and quantitative yield of acoustic recordings for migration-related research and applications. Migration intensity estimated from weather radar data correlated best at low levels with acoustic records including all species in spring while in autumn passerine species showed stronger correlation than the entire species composition. Our findings identify a minor number of species whose call records may be eligible for applications derived from acoustics. Especially the highly vocal species Song thrush and Redwing showed relatively good correlations with radar and citizen science migration schedules. Most long-distance passerine migrants and many other migrants were not captured by acoustics and an estimated seasonal average of about 50% of nocturnally migrating passerine populations remained undetected. Integrated microwave photonics (MWP) is an intriguing technology for the generation, transmission and manipulation of microwave signals in chip-scale optical systems 1,2 . In particular, ultrafast processing of analogue signals in the optical domain with high fidelity and low latency could enable a variety of applications such as MWP filters 3-5 , microwave signal processing 6-9 and image recognition 10,11 . An ideal integrated MWP processing platform should have both an efficient and high-speed electro-optic modulation block to faithfully perform microwave-optic conversion at low power and also a low-loss functional photonic network to implement various signal-processing tasks. Moreover, large-scale, low-cost manufacturability is required to monolithically integrate the two building blocks on the same chip. Here we demonstrate such an integrated MWP processing engine based on a 4 inch wafer-scale thin-film lithium niobate platform. It can perform multipurpose tasks with processing bandwidths of up to 67 GHz at complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS)-compatible voltages. We achieve ultrafast analogue computation, namely temporal integration and differentiation, at sampling rates of up to 256 giga samples per second, and deploy these functions to showcase three proof-of-concept applications: solving ordinary differential equations, generating ultra-wideband signals and detecting edges in images. We further leverage the image edge detector to realize a photonic-assisted image segmentation model that can effectively outline the boundaries of melanoma lesion in medical diagnostic images. Our ultrafast lithium niobate MWP engine could provide compact, low-latency and cost-effective solutions for future wireless communications, high-resolution radar and photonic artificial intelligence., (© 2024. Influence of growth, maturation, and sex on maximal power, force, and velocity during overground sprinting. J Strength Cond Res 38(3): 491-500, 2024-In pediatric populations maximal anaerobic power, force, and velocity capabilities are influenced by changes in body dimensions and muscle function. The aim of this study was to investigate the influences of growth, maturation, and sex on short-term anaerobic performance. One hundred forty children pre-, mid-, and postpeak height velocity performed two 30-m sprints concurrently measured using a radar device. Maximal power (Pmax), force (F0), and velocity (v0) were calculated from sprint velocity-time data and normalized using sex-specific, multiplicative, allometric models containing body mass, fat-free mass (FFM), or height, and chronological age. Absolute values for Pmax, F0, and v0 were higher with increasing maturity (p < 0.01; d ≥ 0.96), and boys had greater outputs than girls (p < 0.01; d ≥ 1.19). When Pmax and v0 were scaled all maturity-related and sex-related differences were removed. When F0 was scaled using models excluding age, all maturity-related differences were removed except for the least mature group (p < 0.05; d ≥ 0.88) and boys maintained higher values than girls (p < 0.05; d ≥ 0.92). All maturity-related and sex-related differences were removed when F0 was scaled using models including age. Maturity-related and sex-related variance in Pmax and v0 can be entirely explained when FFM, height, and chronological age are accounted for. Regarding F0, there seems to be a threshold after which the inclusion of age is no longer necessary to account for maturity-related differences. In young prepubertal children, the inclusion of age likely accounts for deficits in neuromuscular capacities and motor skills, which body dimensions cannot account for. Practitioners should focus on eliciting neural adaptations and enhancing motor coordination in prepubertal children to improve anaerobic performance during overground sprinting., (Copyright © 2024 National Strength and Conditioning Association.)

Annually, a significant number of premature infants suffer from apnea, which can easily cause a drop in oxygen saturation levels, leading to hypoxia. However, infant cardiopulmonary monitoring using conventional methods often necessitates skin contact, and they are not suitable for long-term monitoring. This article introduces a non-contact technique for infant cardiopulmonary monitoring and an adjustable apnea detection algorithm. These are developed using a custom-designed K-band continuous-wave biomedical radar sensor system, which features a DC-coupled adaptive digital tuning function. By using radar technology to detect chest motions without physical contact, it is feasible to extract significant biological information regarding an infant's respiration and heartbeat. The proposed algorithm utilizes an adaptively adjusted threshold and personalized apnea warning time to automatically measure the total number of apneic events and their respective durations. Experiments have been conducted in clinical environment, demonstrating that both the accurate cardiopulmonary signals and the apneas of varying durations can be effectively monitored using this method, which suggest that the proposed technique has potential applications both inside and outside of clinical settings.

Introduction: For clinically node positive breast cancer patients treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC), targeted axillary dissection (TAD) can be used to stage the axilla. TAD removes the sentinel lymph node (SLN) and tagged positive nodes, which can be identified via radar reflector localization (RRL). As it can be challenging to localize a previously positive node after NAC, we evaluated RRL prior to NAC., Methods: We performed a retrospective chart review of breast cancer patients with node positive disease treated with NAC who underwent TAD with RRL. We compared retrieval of radar reflector and clip, timing of localization, and, if a node was positive, whether the radar reflector node or SLN was positive., Results: Seventy-nine patients fulfilled inclusion criteria; 32 were placed pre-NAC (mean 187 d before surgery) and 47 were placed post-NAC (mean 7 d before surgery). For pre-NAC placement, 31 of 32 radar reflectors and 31 of 32 clips were retrieved. For post-NAC placement, 47 of 47 radar reflectors and 46 of 47 clips were retrieved. There was no significant difference in radar reflector or clip retrieval rates between pre-NAC and post-NAC groups (P = 0.41, P = 1, respectively). Thirty of 32 patients with pathologic complete response avoided an axillary lymph node dissection. Of 47 patients with a positive lymph node, 32 were both the SLN and radar reflector node, 11 were radar reflector alone, and four were the SLN., Conclusions: RRL systems are an effective way to guide TAD, and RRL makers can be safely placed prior to NAC., (Copyright © 2023 Elsevier Inc. Tropical peatland across Southeast Asia is drained extensively for production of pulpwood, palm oil and other food crops. Associated increases in peat decomposition have led to widespread subsidence, deterioration of peat condition and CO2 emissions. However, quantification of subsidence and peat condition from these processes is challenging due to the scale and inaccessibility of dense tropical peat swamp forests. The development of satellite interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) has the potential to solve this problem. The Advanced Pixel System using Intermittent Baseline Subset (APSIS, formerly ISBAS) modelling technique provides improved coverage across almost all land surfaces irrespective of ground cover, enabling derivation of a time series of tropical peatland surface oscillations across whole catchments. This study aimed to establish the extent to which APSIS-InSAR can monitor seasonal patterns of tropical peat surface oscillations at North Selangor Peat Swamp Forest, Peninsular Malaysia. Results showed that C-band SAR could penetrate the forest canopy over tropical peat swamp forests intermittently and was applicable to a range of land covers. Therefore the APSIS technique has the potential for monitoring peat surface oscillations under tropical forest canopy using regularly acquired C-band Sentinel-1 InSAR data, enabling continuous monitoring of tropical peatland surface motion at a spatial resolution of 20 m., Competing Interests: “Author AS is director of Terra Motion Limited. The Bio-Radar is herein presented as a non-contact radar system able to capture vital signs remotely without requiring any physical contact with the subject. In this work, the ability to use the proposed system for emotion recognition is verified by comparing its performance on identifying fear, happiness and a neutral condition, with certified measuring equipment. For this purpose, machine learning algorithms were applied to the respiratory and cardiac signals captured simultaneously by the radar and the referenced contact-based system. Following a multiclass identification strategy, one could conclude that both systems present a comparable performance, where the radar might even outperform under specific conditions. Emotion recognition is possible using a radar system, with an accuracy equal to 99.7% and an F1-score of 99.9%. Thus, we demonstrated that it is perfectly possible to use the Bio-Radar system for this purpose, which is able to be operated remotely, avoiding the subject awareness of being monitored and thus providing more authentic reactions.

Background: Respiratory rate is a crucial indicator of disease severity yet is the most neglected vital sign. Subtle changes in respiratory rate may be the first sign of clinical deterioration in a variety of disease states. Current methods of respiratory rate monitoring are labor-intensive and sensitive to motion artifacts, which often leads to inaccurate readings or underreporting; therefore, new methods of respiratory monitoring are needed. The PulsON 440 (P440; TSDR Ultra Wideband Radios and Radars) radar module is a contactless sensor that uses an ultrawideband impulse radar to detect respiratory rate. It has previously demonstrated accuracy in a laboratory setting and may be a useful alternative for contactless respiratory monitoring in clinical settings; however, it has not yet been validated in a clinical setting., Objective: The goal of this study was to (1) compare the P440 radar module to gold standard manual respiratory rate monitoring and standard of care telemetry respiratory monitoring through transthoracic impedance plethysmography and (2) compare the P440 radar to gold standard measurements of respiratory rate in subgroups based on sex and disease state., Methods: This was a pilot study of adults aged 18 years or older being monitored in the emergency department. Participants were monitored with the P440 radar module for 2 hours and had gold standard (manual respiratory counting) and standard of care (telemetry) respiratory rates recorded at 15-minute intervals during that time. Respiratory rates between the P440, gold standard, and standard telemetry were compared using Bland-Altman plots and intraclass correlation coefficients., Results: A total of 14 participants were enrolled in the study. The P440 and gold standard Bland-Altman analysis showed a bias of -0.76 (-11.16 to 9.65) and an intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.38 (95% CI 0.06-0.60). The P440 and gold standard had the best agreement at normal physiologic respiratory rates. There was no change in agreement between the P440 and the gold standard when grouped by admitting diagnosis or sex., Conclusions: Although the P440 did not have statistically significant agreement with gold standard respiratory rate monitoring, it did show a trend of increased agreement in the normal physiologic range, overestimating at low respiratory rates, and underestimating at high respiratory rates. This trend is important for adjusting future models to be able to accurately detect respiratory rates. RADARs and cameras have been present in automotives since the advent of ADAS, as they possess complementary strengths and weaknesses but have been underlooked in the context of learning-based methods. In this work, we propose a method to perform object detection in autonomous driving based on a geometrical and sequential sensor fusion of 3+1D RADAR and semantics extracted from camera data through point cloud painting from the perspective view. To achieve this objective, we adapt PointPainting from the LiDAR and camera domains to the sensors mentioned above. We first apply YOLOv8-seg to obtain instance segmentation masks and project their results to the point cloud. As a refinement stage, we design a set of heuristic rules to minimize the propagation of errors from the segmentation to the detection stage. Our pipeline concludes by applying PointPillars as an object detection network to the painted RADAR point cloud. We validate our approach in the novel View of Delft dataset, which includes 3+1D RADAR data sequences in urban environments. Experimental results show that this fusion is also suitable for RADAR and cameras as we obtain a significant improvement over the RADAR-only baseline, increasing mAP from 41.18 to 52.67 (+27.9%).

The current challenges in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) ship detection tasks revolve around handling significant variations in target sizes and managing high computational expenses, which hinder practical deployment on satellite or mobile airborne platforms. In response to these challenges, this research presents YOLOv7-LDS, a lightweight yet highly accurate SAR ship detection model built upon the YOLOv7 framework. In the core of YOLOv7-LDS's architecture, we introduce a streamlined feature extraction network that strikes a delicate balance between detection precision and computational efficiency. This network is founded on Shufflenetv2 and incorporates Squeeze-and-Excitation (SE) attention mechanisms as its key elements. Additionally, in the Neck section, we introduce the Weighted Efficient Aggregation Network (DCW-ELAN), a fundamental feature extraction module that leverages Coordinate Attention (CA) and Depthwise Convolution (DWConv). This module efficiently aggregates features while preserving the ability to identify small-scale variations, ensuring top-quality feature extraction. Furthermore, we introduce a lightweight Spatial Pyramid Dilated Convolution Cross-Stage Partial Channel (LSPHDCCSPC) module. LSPHDCCSPC is a condensed version of the Spatial Pyramid Pooling Cross-Stage Partial Channel (SPPCSPC) module, incorporating Dilated Convolution (DConv) as a central component for extracting multi-scale information. The experimental results show that YOLOv7-LDS achieves a remarkable Mean Average Precision (mAP) of 99.1% and 95.8% on the SAR Ship Detection Dataset (SSDD) and the NWPU VHR-10 dataset with a parameter count (Params) of 3.4 million, a Giga Floating Point Operations Per Second (GFLOPs) of 6.1 and an Inference Time (IT) of 4.8 milliseconds. YOLOv7-LDS effectively strikes a fine balance between computational cost and detection performance, surpassing many of the current state-of-the-art object detection models. With an aging population, numerous assistive and monitoring technologies are under development to enable older adults to age in place. To facilitate aging in place, predicting risk factors such as falls and hospitalization and providing early interventions are important. Much of the work on ambient monitoring for risk prediction has centered on gait speed analysis, utilizing privacy-preserving sensors like radar. Despite compelling evidence that monitoring step length in addition to gait speed is crucial for predicting risk, radar-based methods have not explored step length measurement in the home. Furthermore, laboratory experiments on step length measurement using radars are limited to proof-of-concept studies with few healthy subjects. To address this gap, a radar-based step length measurement system for the home is proposed based on detection and tracking using a radar point cloud followed by Doppler speed profiling of the torso to obtain step lengths in the home. The proposed method was evaluated in a clinical environment involving 35 frail older adults to establish its validity. Additionally, the method was assessed in people's homes, with 21 frail older adults who had participated in the clinical assessment. The proposed radar-based step length measurement method was compared to the gold-standard Zeno Walkway Gait Analysis System, revealing a 4.5 cm/8.3% error in a clinical setting. Furthermore, it exhibited excellent reliability (ICC(2,k) = 0.91, 95% CI 0.82 to 0.96) in uncontrolled home settings. The method also proved accurate in uncontrolled home settings, as indicated by a strong consistency (ICC(3,k) = 0.81 (95% CI 0.53 to 0.92)) between home measurements and in-clinic assessments.

Radar systems are a type of sensor that detects radio signals reflected from objects located a long distance from transmitters. For covering a longer range and a higher resolution in the operation of a radar, a high-frequency band and an array antenna are measures to take. Given a limited size to the antenna aperture in the front end of the radar, the choice of a millimeter-wave band leads to a denser layout for the array antenna and a higher antenna gain. Millimeter-wave signals tend to become attenuated faster by a larger loss of the covering material like the radome, implying this disadvantage offsets the advantage of high antenna directivity, compared to the C-band and X-band ones. As the radome is essential to the radar system to protect the array antenna from rain and dust, a metamaterial surface in the layer is suggested to meet multiple objectives. Firstly, the proposed electromagnetic structure is the protection layer for the source of radiation. Secondly, the metasurface does not disturb the millimeter-wave signal and makes its way through the cover layer to the air. This electromagnetically transparent surface transforms the phase distribution of the incident wave into the equal phase in the transmitted wave, resulting in an increased antenna gain. This is fabricated and assembled with the array antenna held in a 3D-printed jig with harnessing accessories. It is examined in view of S 21 as the transfer coefficient between two ports of the VNA, having the antenna alone and with the metasurface. Additionally, the far-field test comes next to check the validity of the suggested structure and design. The bench test shows around a 7 dB increase in the transfer coefficient, and the anechoic chamber field test gives about a 5 dB improvement in antenna gain for a 24-band GHz array antenna.

The use of radar technology for non-contact measurement of vital parameters is increasingly being examined in scientific studies. Based on a systematic literature search in the PubMed, German National Library, Austrian Library Network (Union Catalog), Swiss National Library and Common Library Network databases, the accuracy of heart rate and/or respiratory rate measurements by means of radar technology was analyzed. In 37% of the included studies on the measurement of the respiratory rate and in 48% of those on the measurement of the heart rate, the maximum deviation was 5%. For a tolerated deviation of 10%, the corresponding percentages were 85% and 87%, respectively. However, the quantitative comparability of the results available in the current literature is very limited due to a variety of variables. The elimination of the problem of confounding variables and the continuation of the tendency to focus on the algorithm applied will continue to constitute a central topic of radar-based vital parameter measurement. Promising fields of application of research can be found in particular in areas that require non-contact measurements. This includes infection events, emergency medicine, disaster situations and major catastrophic incidents.

Given the significant impact of sleep on overall health, radar technology offers a promising, non-invasive, and cost-effective avenue for the early detection of sleep disorders, even prior to relying on polysomnography (PSG)-based classification. In this study, we employed an attention-based bidirectional long short-term memory (Attention Bi-LSTM) model to accurately predict sleep stages using 60 GHz frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) radar. Our dataset comprised 78 participants from an ongoing obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) cohort, recruited between July 2021 and November 2022, who underwent overnight polysomnography alongside radar sensor monitoring. The dataset encompasses comprehensive polysomnography recordings, spanning both sleep and wakefulness states. The predictions achieved a Cohen's kappa coefficient of 0.746 and an overall accuracy of 85.2% in classifying wakefulness, rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep, and non-REM (NREM) sleep (N1 + N2 + N3). The results demonstrated that the models incorporating both Radar 1 and Radar 2 data consistently outperformed those using only Radar 1 data, indicating the potential benefits of utilising multiple radars for sleep stage classification. Although the performance of the models tended to decline with increasing OSA severity, the addition of Radar 2 data notably improved the classification accuracy. Low-cost and portable electromagnetic (EM) stroke diagnostic systems are of great interest due to the increasing demand for early on-site detection or long-term bedside monitoring of stroke patients. Biosensor antennas serve as crucial hardware components for EM diagnostic systems. This article presents a detect capability enhanced biosensor antenna with a planar and compact configuration for portable EM stroke detection systems, overcoming the problem of limited detection capability in existing designs for this application. The proposed antenna is developed based on multiple dipoles, exhibiting multi-mode resonances and complementary interaction. In the frequency domain, the simulated and measured results with the presence of head phantoms show that this compact planar antenna achieves improved performance in both impedance bandwidth and near-field radiation inside the head tissues, which all contribute to enhancing its stroke detection capability in radar-based EM diagnosis. An array of 12 elements is numerically and experimentally tested in a lab-setting EM stroke diagnostic system to validate the detection capability of the proposed antenna. The reconstructed 2-D images inside the head demonstrate successful detection of different stroke-affected areas, even as small as 3 mm in radius, significantly smaller than those of reported relevant works under the same validation setting, confirming the enhanced detection capability of the proposed antenna.

Peshawar is one of the most densely populated cities of Pakistan with high urbanization rate. The city overexploits groundwater resources for household and commercial usage which has caused land subsidence. Land subsidence has long been an issue in Peshawar due to insufficient groundwater removal. In this research, we employ the persistent scatterer interferometry synthetic aperture radar (PS-InSAR) technique with Sentinel-1 imaging data to observe the yearly land subsidence and generate accumulative time-series maps for the years (2018 to 2020) using the SAR PROcessing tool (SARPROZ). The PS-InSAR findings from two contiguous paths are combined by considering the variance over the overlapping area. The subsidence rates in the Peshawar are from -59 to 17 mm/yr. The results show that subsidence is -28.48 mm/yr in 2018, the subsidence reached -49.02 mm/yr in 2019, while in 2020, the subsidence reached -49.90 mm/yr. The findings indicate a notable rise in land subsidence between the years 2018 and 2020. Subsidence is predicted in the research region primarily due to excessive groundwater removal and soil consolidation induced by surficial loads. The correlation of land subsidence observations with groundwater levels and precipitation data revealed some relationships. Overall, the proposed method efficiently monitors, maps, and detects subsidence-prone areas. Unhealthy dietary habits are considered as the primary cause of various chronic diseases, including obesity and diabetes. The automatic food intake monitoring system has the potential to improve the quality of life (QoL) of people with diet-related diseases through dietary assessment. In this work, we propose a novel contactless radar-based approach for food intake monitoring. Specifically, a Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar sensor is employed to recognize fine-grained eating and drinking gestures. The fine-grained eating/drinking gesture contains a series of movements from raising the hand to the mouth until putting away the hand from the mouth. A 3D temporal convolutional network with self-attention (3D-TCN-Att) is developed to detect and segment eating and drinking gestures in meal sessions by processing the Range-Doppler Cube (RD Cube). Unlike previous radar-based research, this work collects data in continuous meal sessions (more realistic scenarios). We create a public dataset comprising 70 meal sessions (4,132 eating gestures and 893 drinking gestures) from 70 participants with a total duration of 1,155 minutes. Four eating styles (fork & knife, chopsticks, spoon, hand) are included in this dataset. To validate the performance of the proposed approach, seven-fold cross-validation method is applied. The 3D-TCN-Att model achieves a segmental F1-score of 0.896 and 0.868 for eating and drinking gestures, respectively. The results of the proposed approach indicate the feasibility of using radar for fine-grained eating and drinking gesture detection and segmentation in meal sessions.

A reformed particle swarm optimization (R PSO )-based up-conversion mixer circuit is proposed for radar application in this paper. In practice, a non-optimized up-conversion mixer suffers from high power consumption, poor linearity, and conversion gain. Therefore, the R PSO algorithm is proposed to optimize the up-conversion mixer. The novelty of the proposed R PSO algorithm is it helps to solve the problem of local optima and premature convergence in traditional particle swarm optimization (T PSO ). Furthermore, in the R PSO , a velocity position-based convergence (VP C ) and wavelet mutation (W M ) strategy are used to enhance R PSO 's swarm diversity. Moreover, this work also features novel circuit configurations based on the two-fold transconductance path (T TP ), a technique used to improve linearity. A differential common source (D CS ) amplifier is included in the primary transconductance path (P TP ) of the T TP . As for the subsidiary transconductance path (S TP ), the enhanced cross-quad transconductor (E CQT ) is implemented within the T TP . A benchmark function verification is conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the R PSO algorithm. The proposed R PSO has also been compared with other optimization algorithms such as the genetic algorithm (GA) and the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II). By using R PSO , the proposed optimized mixer achieves a conversion gain (CG) of 2.5 dB (measured). In this study, the proposed mixer achieves a 1 dB compression point (OP 1 dB) of 4.2 dBm with a high linearity. In the proposed mixer, the noise figure (NF) is approximately 3.1 dB. While the power dissipation of the optimized mixer is 3.24 mW. Additionally, the average time for R PSO to design an up-conversion mixer is 4.535 s. Simulation and measured results demonstrate the excellent performance of the R PSO optimized up-conversion mixer.

In this paper we present an open-source Time-of-Flight and radar dataset of a neonatal thorax simulator for the development of respiratory rate detection algorithms. As it is very difficult to gain recordings of (preterm) neonates and there is hardly any open-source data available, we built our own neonatal thorax simulator which simulates the movement of the thorax due to respiration. We recorded Time-of-Flight (ToF) and radar data at different respiratory rates in a range of 5 to 80 breaths per minute (BPM) and with varying upstroke heights. Recently, radar sensors have been extensively used for vital sign monitoring in dogs, owing to their noncontact and noninvasive nature. However, a public dataset on dog vital signs has yet to be proposed since capturing data from dogs requires special training and approval. This work presents the first ever ultra wideband radar-based dog vital sign (UWB-DVS) dataset, which was captured in two independent scenarios. In the first scenario, clinical reference sensors are attached to the fainted dogs, and data from UWB radar and reference sensors are captured synchronously. In the second scenario, the dogs can move freely, and video recordings are provided as a reference for movement detection and breathing extraction. For technical validation, a high correlation, above 0.9, is found between the radar and clinical reference sensors for both the heart rate and breathing rate measurements in scenario 1. Automatic fall detection plays a significant role in monitoring the health of senior citizens. In particular, millimeter-wave radar sensors are relevant for human pose recognition in an indoor environment due to their advantages of privacy protection, low hardware cost, and wide range of working conditions. However, low-quality point clouds from 4D radar diminish the reliability of fall detection. To improve the detection accuracy, conventional methods utilize more costly hardware. In this study, we propose a model that can provide high-quality three-dimensional point cloud images of the human body at a low cost. To improve the accuracy and effectiveness of fall detection, a system that extracts distribution features through small radar antenna arrays is developed. The proposed system achieved 99.1% and 98.9% accuracy on test datasets pertaining to new subjects and new environments, respectively.

In recent years, X-band phase array dual polarization weather radar technology has matured. The cooperative networking data from X-band phase array dual polarization weather radar have many advantages compared with traditional methods, namely, high spatial and temporal resolution (approximately 70 seconds in one scan, 30 m in radial distance resolution), wide coverages that can compensate for the observation blind spots, and data fusion technology that is used in the observation overlap area to ensure that the observed precipitation data have spatial continuity. Based on the above radar systems, this study proposes an improved hail and lightning weather disaster rapid identification and early warning algorithm. The improved thunderstorm identification, tracking, analysis, and nowcasting (TITAN) algorithm is used to quickly identify three-dimensional strong convective storm cells. Large sample observation experiment data are used to invert the localized hail index (HDR) to identify the hail position. The fuzzy logic method is used to comprehensively determine the probability of lightning occurrence. The comparative analysis experiment shows that, compared with the live observation data from the ground-based automatic station, the hail and lightning disaster weather warning algorithm developed by this study can increase warning times by approximately 7 minutes over the traditional algorithm, and its critical success index (CSI), false alarm ratio (FAR) and omission alarm ratio (OAR) scores are better than those of the traditional method. The average root mean square error (ARMSE) for identifying hail and lightning locations by this improved method is also significantly better than that of traditional methods. The traditional algorithms for generating 3D human point clouds often face challenges in dealing with issues such as phantom targets and target classification caused by electromagnetic multipath effects, resulting in a lack of accuracy in the generated point clouds and requiring manual labeling of the position of the human body. To address these problems, this paper proposes an adaptive method for generating 3D human point clouds based on 4D millimeter-wave radar (Self-Adaptive mPoint, SA-mPoint). This method estimates the rough human point cloud by considering micro-motion and respiration characteristics while combining the echo dynamic with static information. Furthermore, it enhances the density of point cloud generation. It reduces interference from multipath noise through multi-frame dynamic fusion and an adaptive density-based clustering algorithm based on the center points of humans. The effectiveness of the SA-mPoint algorithm is verified through experiments conducted using the TI Millimeter Wave Cascade Imaging Radar Radio Frequency Evaluation Module 77G 4D cascade radar to collect challenging raw data consisting of single-target and multi-target human poses in an open classroom setting. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves an average accuracy rate of 97.94% for generating point clouds. Compared to the popular TI-mPoint algorithm, it generates a higher number of point clouds on average (increased by 87.94%), improves the average accuracy rate for generating point clouds (increased by 78.3%), and reduces the running time on average (reduced by 11.41%).
