The critical points on the rail and road network are their intersections, i.e., level crossings. During a train crossing, car traffic is stopped. This reduces the fluidity of traffic on the road and, consequently, can cause congestion. The problem increases with the number of cars and trains. Frequently, due to national regulations, level crossing closure times are long. It is mainly dictated by safety issues. Building two-level intersections is not always a good solution, mainly because of the high cost of implementation. In the article, the authors proposed the use of sensors to reduce level crossing closure times and improve the Level of Service on the road network. The analyzed railroad lines are local agglomeration lines, mainly due to safety (low speed of commuter trains) and high impact on the road network. The sensors proposed in the article are based on radar/LIDAR. Formulas similar to HCM methods are proposed, which can be implemented in a railroad crossing controller. Simulations using the PTV Vissim program are carried out and the results are worked out based on the obtained data. The considered method can reduce the level crossing closure time by 68.6%, thereby increasing the Level of Service on roads near railroads.

This paper proposes to remotely estimate a human subject's blood pressure using a millimeter-wave radar system. High blood pressure is a critical health threat that can lead to diseases including heart attacks, strokes, kidney disease, and vision loss. The commonest method of measuring blood pressure is based on a cuff that is contact-based, non-continuous, and cumbersome to wear. Continuous remote monitoring of blood pressure can facilitate early detection and treatment of heart disease. This paper investigates the possibility of using millimeter-wave frequency-modulated continuous-wave radar to measure the heart blood pressure by means of pulse wave velocity (PWV). PWV is known to be highly correlated with blood pressure, which can be measured by pulse transit time. We measured PWV using a two-millimeter wave radar focused on the subject's chest and wrist. The measured time delay provided the PWV given the length from the chest to the wrist. In addition, we analyzed the measured radar signal from the wrist because the shape of the pulse wave purveyed information on blood pressure. We investigated the area under the curve (AUC) as a feature and found that AUC is strongly correlated with blood pressure. In the experiment, five human subjects were measured 50 times each after performing different activities intended to influence blood pressure. We used artificial neural networks to estimate systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (SBP) with both PWV and AUC as inputs. The resulting root mean square errors of estimated blood pressure were 3.33 mmHg for SBP and 3.14 mmHg for DBP.

Accurate precipitation monitoring is crucial for understanding climate change and rainfall-driven hazards at a local scale. However, the current suite of monitoring approaches, including weather radar and rain gauges, have different insufficiencies such as low spatial and temporal resolution and difficulty in accurately detecting potentially destructive precipitation events such as hailstorms. In this study, we develop an array-based method to monitor rainfall with seismic nodal stations, offering both high spatial and temporal resolution. We analyze seismic records from 1825 densely spaced, high-frequency seismometers in Oklahoma, and identify signals from nine precipitation events that occurred during the one-month station deployment in 2016. After removing anthropogenic noise and Earth structure response, the obtained precipitation spatial pattern mimics the one from a nearby operational weather radar, while offering higher spatial (~ 300 m) and temporal (< 10 s) resolution. We further show the potential of this approach to monitor hail with joint analysis of seismic intensity and independent precipitation rate measurements, and advocate for coordinated seismological-meteorological field campaign design., (© 2023. The modeling and mapping of soil organic carbon (SOC) has advanced through the rapid growth of Earth observation data (e.g., Sentinel) collection and the advent of appropriate tools such as the Google Earth Engine (GEE). However, the effects of differing optical and radar sensors on SOC prediction models remain uncertain. This research aims to investigate the effects of different optical and radar sensors (Sentinel-1/2/3 and ALOS-2) on SOC prediction models based on long-term satellite observations on the GEE platform. We also evaluate the relative impact of four synthetic aperture radar (SAR) acquisition configurations (polarization mode, band frequency, orbital direction and time window) on SOC mapping with multiband SAR data from Spain. Twelve experiments involving different satellite data configurations, combined with 4027 soil samples, were used for building SOC random forest regression models. The results show that the synthesis mode and choice of satellite images, as well as the SAR acquisition configurations, influenced the model accuracy to varying degrees. Models based on SAR data involving cross-polarization, multiple time periods and "ASCENDING" orbits outperformed those involving copolarization, a single time period and "DESCENDING" orbits. Moreover, combining information from different orbital directions and polarization modes improved the soil prediction models. Among the SOC models based on long-term satellite observations, the Sentinel-3-based models (R 2  = 0.40) performed the best, while the ALOS-2-based model performed the worst. In addition, the predictive performance of MSI/Sentinel-2 (R 2  = 0.35) was comparable with that of SAR/Sentinel-1 (R 2  = 0.35); however, the combination (R 2  = 0.39) of the two improved the model performance. All the predicted maps involving Sentinel satellites had similar spatial patterns that were higher in northwest Spain and lower in the south. The 3D range-migration algorithm (RMA) and its 2D equivalent, the omega-k algorithm, are employed in a wide range of applications where reconstruction of synthetic aperture data is required, from satellite radar imaging of planets over seismic imaging of the earth crust, down to phased-array ultrasound and ultrasonic application, and recently in-line synthetic aperture radar for non-destructive testing. These algorithms are based on Fourier transforms and share their time-complexity. This limits highly-resolved measurement data to be processed at high speeds which would be advantageous for modern production feed lines. In this publication, we present the development and implementation of the RMA on a quantum computer that scales favourably compared to the time complexity of the classical RMA. We compare reconstruction results of simulated and measured data of the classical and quantum RMA. Hereby, the quantum RMA is run on a quantum simulator backend as well as on IBM's Q System One quantum computer. Early-season agricultural drought is frequent over South Asian region due to delayed or deficient monsoon rainfall. These drought events often cause delay in sowing and can even result in crop failure. The present study focuses on monitoring early-season agricultural drought in a semi-arid region of India over 5-year period (2016-2020). It utilizes hydro-climatic and biophysical variables to develop a combined drought index (CDI), which integrates anomalies in soil moisture conditions, rainfall, and crop-sown area progression. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR)-based soil moisture index (SMI) represents in situ measured soil moisture with reasonable accuracy (r=0.68). Based on the highest F1-score, SAR backscatter in VH (vertical transmit-horizontal receive) polarization with specific values for parameter threshold (-18.63 dB) and slope threshold (-0.072) is selected to determine the start of season (SoS) with a validation accuracy of 73.53%. The CDI approach is used to monitor early-season agricultural drought and identified drought conditions during June-July in 2019 and during July in 2018. Conversely, 2020 experienced consistently wet conditions, while 2016 and 2017 had near-normal conditions. Overall, the study highlights the use of SAR data for early-season agricultural drought monitoring, which is mainly governed by soil moisture-driven crop-sowing progression. In this paper, we propose a novel method for point cloud complementation called PADPNet. Our approach uses a combination of global and local information to infer missing elements in the point cloud. We achieve this by dividing the input point cloud into uniform local regions, called perceptual fields, which are abstractly understood as special convolution kernels. The set of point clouds in each local region is represented as a feature vector and transformed into N uniform perceptual fields as the input to our transformer model. We also designed a geometric density-aware block to better exploit the inductive bias of the point cloud's 3D geometric structure. Our method preserves sharp edges and detailed structures that are often lost in voxel-based or point-based approaches. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach outperforms other methods in reducing the ambiguity of output results. Our proposed method has important applications in 3D computer vision and can efficiently recover complete 3D object shapes from missing point clouds.

This paper proposes contactless monitoring of Heart Rate (HR) and Breath Rate (BR) with simultaneous measurements using Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar and thermal camera. The radar collects the body movement signals which include Random Body Movements (RBMs). Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) and Wavelet analysis were used on this signal to get the accurate values of HR and BR. Similarly, with thermal imaging, nostril and forehead regions are tracked to estimate the values of BR as well as HR. We conducted an experiment with 50 subjects to find similarities in the performance of radar and thermal camera while measuring HR and BR. Simultaneously, these two methods have been validated with pulse oximeter and visual camera. From the visual camera, we can get the abdominal movements on which the BR can be ascertained whereas pulse oximeter gives us the HR. Radar signals are degraded because of large RBMs whereas thermal signals get distorted because of sudden temperature changes in the surroundings, sweating, and occlusion. We used a Signal Quality Metric (SQM) to ascertain the measurement quality of the vital signs. This SQM-based approach can further be used for sensor fusion to build a robust contactless system to monitor vital signs.Clinical relevance- Contactless and accurate measurement of HR and BR is very essential for continuous and comfortable monitoring of vitals. In this paper, we combine both FMCW radar and thermal camera so that one can complement the other in adverse scenarios on the basis of signal quality.

Accurate continuous measurement of respiratory displacement using continuous wave Doppler radar requires rigorous management of dc offset which changes when a subject changes distance from the radar measurement system. Effective measurement, therefore, requires robust dynamic calibration which can recognize and compensate for changes in the nominal position of a subject. In this paper, a respiratory displacement measurement algorithm is proposed which can differentiate between sedentary and non-sedentary conditions and continuously adapt to provide long-term monitoring of a subject's sedentary respiration. Arctangent demodulation is an effective means of quantifying continuous displacement using a quadrature Doppler radar, yet it depends on accurate identification of dc offset and dc information contributions in the radar I-Q arc with the subject in a particular position. The dynamic calibration method proposed here is demonstrated to differentiate between sedentary and non-sedentary conditions for six subjects to produce accurate sedentary respiration measurements even when the subject arbitrarily changes position, once the appropriate thresholds are established for the measurement environment.

Radiometric Terrain Corrected (RTC) gamma nought backscatter, which was introduced around a decade ago, has evolved into the standard for analysis-ready Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data. While working with RTC backscatter data is particularly advantageous over undulated terrain, it requires substantial computing resources given that the terrain flattening is more computationally demanding than simple orthorectification. The extra computation may become problematic when working with large SAR datasets such as the one provided by the Sentinel-1 mission. In this study, we examine existing Sentinel-1 RTC pre-processing workflows and assess ways to reduce processing and storage overheads by considering the satellite's high orbital stability. By propagating Sentinel-1's orbital deviations through the complete pre-processing chain, we show that the local contributing area and the shadow mask can be assumed to be static for each relative orbit. Providing them as a combined external static layer to the pre-processing workflow, and streamlining the transformations between ground and orbit geometry, reduces the overall processing times by half. We conducted our experiments with our in-house developed toolbox named wizsard , which allowed us to analyse various aspects of RTC, specifically run time performance, oversampling, and radiometric quality. Compared to the Sentinel Application Platform (SNAP) this implementation allowed speeding up processing by factors of 10-50. The findings of this study are not just relevant for Sentinel-1 but for all SAR missions with high spatio-temporal coverage and orbital stability.

Intelligent ship detection based on synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is vital in maritime situational awareness. Deep learning methods have great advantages in SAR ship detection. However, the methods do not strike a balance between lightweight and accuracy. In this article, we propose an end-to-end lightweight SAR target detection algorithm, multi-level Laplacian pyramid denoising network (LPDNet). Firstly, an intelligent denoising method based on the multi-level Laplacian transform is proposed. Through Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-based threshold suppression, the denoising becomes adaptive to every SAR image via back-propagation and makes the denoising processing supervised. Secondly, channel modeling is proposed to combine the spatial domain and frequency domain information. Multi-dimensional information enhances the detection effect. Thirdly, the Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM) is introduced into the feature fusion module of the basic framework (Yolox-tiny) so that different weights are given to each pixel of the feature map to highlight the effective features. Experiments on SSDD and AIR SARShip-1.0 demonstrate that the proposed method achieves 97.14% AP with a speed of 24.68FPS and 92.19% AP with a speed of 23.42FPS, respectively, with only 5.1 M parameters, which verifies the accuracy, efficiency, and lightweight of the proposed method.

In this Letter, an integrated waveform geometrically shaped (GS) 16 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) based orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) communication signal combined with a linear frequency modulation (LFM) radar signal is proposed and experimentally demonstrated in a W-band communication and radar detection system. The proposed method can generate communication and radar signals simultaneously. The inherent error propagation and the interference of the radar signal limit the transmission performance of the joint communication and radar sensing system. Thus, an artificial neural network (ANN) scheme is proposed for the GS-16QAM OFDM signal. After 0.8-m wireless transmission, the experimental results show that the receiver sensitivity and normalized general mutual information (NGMI) of the GS-16QAM OFDM are improved compared with that of the OFDM with uniform 16QAM at the forward error correction (FEC) threshold of 3.8 × 10 -3 . In addition, multi-target radar detection in centimeter level radar ranging is realized.

In the oil industry, oil spills occur due to offshore rig explosions, ship collisions, and other reasons. It is crucial to accurately and rapidly identify oil spills to protect marine ecosystems. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) can all-weather and all-time work and provide a wealth of polarization information for identification of oil spills based on semantic segmentation model. However, the performance of classifiers in the semantic segmentation model has become a significant challenge to improving recognition ability. To solve this problem, an improved semantic segmentation model named DRSNet was proposed, which uses ResNet-50 as the backbone in DeepLabv3+ and support vector machines (SVM) as the classifier. The experiment was conducted using ten polarimetric features from SAR images and results demonstrate that the DRSNet performs best compared to other semantic segmentation models. This article proposes a system for Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) using stochastic distance for Synthetic-Aperture Radar (SAR) images. The methodology consists of three essential steps for image retrieval. First, it estimates the roughness (α^) and scale (γ^) parameters of the GI0 distribution that models SAR data in intensity. The parameters of the model were estimated using the Maximum Likelihood Estimation and the fast approach of the Log-Cumulants method. Second, using the triangular distance, CBIR-SAR evaluates the similarity between a query image and images in the database. The stochastic distance can identify the most similar regions according to the image features, which are the estimated parameters of the data model. Third, the performance of our proposal was evaluated by applying the Mean Average Precision (MAP) measure and considering clippings from three radar sensors, i.e., UAVSAR, OrbiSaR-2, and ALOS PALSAR. The CBIR-SAR results for synthetic images achieved the highest MAP value, retrieving extremely heterogeneous regions. Regarding the real SAR images, CBIR-SAR achieved MAP values above 0.833 for all polarization channels for image samples of forest (UAVSAR) and urban areas (ORBISAR). Our results confirmed that the proposed method is sensitive to the degree of texture, and hence, it relies on good estimates. They are inputs to the stochastic distance for effective image retrieval.

Falls are among the most devastating events that can happen to an older person. Automatic fall detection systems aim to solve this problem by alerting carers and family the moment a fall occurs. This paper presents the development of an unobtrusive fall detection system using ultra-wideband (UWB) radar. The proposed system employed a ceiling-mounted UWB radar to avoid object occlusion and allow for flexible implementation. An innovative pre-processing method was developed to effectively enhance motion and reduce noise from raw UWB data. We designed a trial protocol composed of common types of falls in older population and activities of daily living (ADL). A fall detection algorithm based on convolutional neural networks was developed with simulated falls and ADLs obtained from ten participants following the trial protocol in a clear and cluttered living environment. The fall detection system achieved an accuracy of 93.97%, with a sensitivity of 95.58% and specificity of 92.68%.

Radar based contact-free technology has number of potential applications for monitoring the cardiopulmonary functions of patients. However, no study has evaluated the effect of gender on the quality of the recordings. This study makes an attempt to distinguish radar based recording of male and female subjects. The study analysed a publicly available dataset of radar-recorded heart sound signals from both male and female subjects. Here, we exploit the reference signal-to-noise ratio (RSNR) to quantify the signal's quality. The results indicate that there is a significant difference in the signal quality between males and females, with males having a higher RSNR value compared to females. This could be a limitation in the widespread use of the current radar based cardiopulmonary recording techniques and overcoming this should be considered for future research.Clinical relevance- This work has highlighted the gender based difference. By considering this, the radar based cardiopulmonary device has the potential for being used for patients requiring long-term monitoring.

This study presents a novel multimodal heterogeneous perception cross-fusion framework for intelligent vehicles that combines data from millimeter-wave radar and camera to enhance target tracking accuracy and handle system uncertainties. The framework employs a multimodal interaction strategy to predict target motion more accurately and an improved joint probability data association method to match measurement data with targets. An adaptive root-mean-square cubature Kalman filter is used to estimate the statistical characteristics of noise under complex traffic scenarios with varying process and measurement noise. Experiments conducted on a real vehicle platform demonstrate that the proposed framework improves reliability and robustness in challenging environments. It overcomes the challenges of insufficient data fusion utilization, frequent leakage, and misjudgment of dangerous obstructions around vehicles, and inaccurate prediction of collision risks. The proposed framework has the potential to advance the state of the art in target tracking and perception for intelligent vehicles.

The co-occurrence of diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases together can make clinical management and treatment more complex. Early detection of comorbid conditions can help in creating personalized treatment plans. Multiple fluid biomarkers can be used to enhance the diagnostic accuracy of identifying comorbidity. This study aims to distinguish non-comorbid and comorbid conditions using the risk factor profile of multiple fluid biomarkers, such as creatine phosphokinase, platelet count, serum creatinine, and ejection fraction. Area feature is computed by utilizing risk factor profile of the biomarkers, and a random forest classifier is used to distinguish the two conditions. The results indicate that the area of the radar plot is more significant for differentiating comorbid from non-comorbid conditions. RF classifier achieves the highest accuracy of 59.91% to differentiate the two conditions. Thus, multiple fluid biomarkers could be used to accurately detect the comorbid condition and improve the treatment plan individually.

The timed up and go (TUG) test is a simple, valid, and reliable clinical tool that is widely used to assess mobility in elderly people. Several research studies have been conducted to automate the TUG test using wearable sensors or motion-tracking systems. Despite their promising results, the adopted technological systems present inconveniences in terms of acceptability and privacy protection. In this work, we propose to overcome these problems by using a Doppler radar system set into the backrest of a chair in order to automate the TUG test and extract additional information from its phases (i.e., transfer, walk, and turn). We intend to segment its phases and extract spatiotemporal gait parameters automatically. Our methodology is mainly based on a multiresolution analysis of radar signals. We proposed a segmentation technique based on the extraction of limbs oscillations signals through a semisupervised machine learning approach, on the one hand, and the application of the DARC algorithm on the other hand. Once the speed signals of torso and limbs oscillations were detected, we suggested estimating 14 gait parameters. All our approaches were validated by comparing outcomes to those obtained from a reference Vicon system. High correlation coefficients were obtained by comparing the speed signals of the torso ( ρ =0.8), the speed signals of limbs oscillations ( ρ =0.91), the initial and final indices of TUG phases ( ρ =0.95), and the extracted parameters (percentage error < 4.8) obtained after radar signal processing to those obtained from the Vicon system., Competing Interests: The authors declare that they have no conflicts of interest., (Copyright © 2023 Racha Soubra et al.)

Multiple-input-multiple-output synthetic aperture radar (MIMO-SAR) is being studied and applied in more and more scenarios. However, there is still a certain distance away from real-time imaging using advanced algorithms. The traditional backpropagation algorithm (BPA) multi-accumulation integration is unsuitable for dealing with large-size scanning data, and the wavenumber domain algorithm requires the array to satisfy Nyquist sampling law in azimuth to avoid aliasing in imaging reconstruction. Based on these issues, a novel 3D imaging method is proposed for MIMO-SAR. An appropriate transformation and inverse Fourier transform (FT) is carried out for the frequency domain; thus, accumulation in the wavenumber domain is not required, which is easy to implement. The computational complexity of the algorithm is much lower than BPA and has better generalizability than the wavenumber domain algorithm. Coherence factor (CF) is also introduced to achieve sidelobe suppression. Proof-of-principle experiments were also carried out in the 92.5 GHz band based on the MIMO-SAR prototype system. Both simulation and experimental results of different distributed targets show good performance of imaging and do not lose the quality of image reconstruction.

This study presents an efficient super-resolution (SR) method for targets observed by satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR). First, a small target image is extracted from a large-scale SAR image and undergoes proper preprocessing. The preprocessing step is adaptively designed depending on the types of movements of targets. Next, the principal scattering centers of targets are extracted using the compressive sensing technique. Subsequently, an impulse response function (IRF) of the satellite SAR system (IRF-S) is generated using a SAR image of a corner reflector located at the calibration site. Then, the spatial resolution of the IRF-S is improved by the spectral estimation technique. Finally, according to the SAR signal model, the super-resolved IRF-S is combined with the extracted scattering centers to generate a super-resolved target image. In our experiments, the SR capabilities for various targets were investigated using quantitative and qualitative analysis. Compared with conventional SAR SR methods, the proposed scheme exhibits greater robustness towards improvement of the spatial resolution of the target image when the degrees of SR are high. Additionally, the proposed scheme has faster computation time (CT) than other SR algorithms, irrespective of the degree of SR. The novelties of this study can be summarized as follows: (1) the practical design of an efficient SAR SR scheme that has robustness at a high SR degree; (2) the application of proper preprocessing considering the types of movements of targets (i.e., stationary, moderate motion, and complex motion) in SAR SR processing; (3) the effective evaluation of SAR SR capability using various metrics such as peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), structural similarity index (SSIM), focus quality parameters, and CT, as well as qualitative analysis.

RF sensing offers an unobtrusive, user-friendly, and privacy-preserving method for detecting accidental falls and recognizing human activities. Contemporary RF-based HAR systems generally employ a single monostatic radar to recognize human activities. However, a single monostatic radar cannot detect the motion of a target, e.g., a moving person, orthogonal to the boresight axis of the radar. Owing to this inherent physical limitation, a single monostatic radar fails to efficiently recognize orientation-independent human activities. In this work, we present a complementary RF sensing approach that overcomes the limitation of existing single monostatic radar-based HAR systems to robustly recognize orientation-independent human activities and falls. Our approach used a distributed mmWave MIMO radar system that was set up as two separate monostatic radars placed orthogonal to each other in an indoor environment. These two radars illuminated the moving person from two different aspect angles and consequently produced two time-variant micro-Doppler signatures. We first computed the mean Doppler shifts (MDSs) from the micro-Doppler signatures and then extracted statistical and time- and frequency-domain features. We adopted feature-level fusion techniques to fuse the extracted features and a support vector machine to classify orientation-independent human activities. To evaluate our approach, we used an orientation-independent human activity dataset, which was collected from six volunteers. The dataset consisted of more than 1350 activity trials of five different activities that were performed in different orientations. The proposed complementary RF sensing approach achieved an overall classification accuracy ranging from 98.31 to 98.54%. It overcame the inherent limitations of a conventional single monostatic radar-based HAR and outperformed it by 6%.

Precipitation nowcasting refers to the use of specific meteorological elements to predict precipitation in the next 0-2 h. Existing methods use radar echo maps and the Z-R relationship to directly predict future rainfall rates through deep learning methods, which are not physically constrained, but suffer from severe loss of predicted image details. This paper proposes a new model framework to effectively solve this problem, namely LSTMAtU-Net. It is based on the U-Net architecture, equipped with a Convolutional LSTM (ConvLSTM) unit with the vertical flow direction and depthwise-separable convolution, and we propose a new component, the Efficient Channel and Space Attention (ECSA) module. The ConvLSTM unit with the vertical flow direction memorizes temporal changes by extracting features from different levels of the convolutional layers, while the ECSA module innovatively integrates different structural information of each layer of U-Net into the channelwise attention mechanism to learn channel and spatial information, thereby enhancing attention to the details of precipitation images. The experimental results showed that the performance of the model on the test dataset was better than other examined models and improved the accuracy of medium- and high-intensity precipitation nowcasting.

The number of vehicles equipped with radars on the road has been increasing for years and is expected to reach 50% of cars by 2030. This rapid rise in radars will likely increase the risk of harmful interference, especially since radar specifications from standardization bodies (e.g., ETSI) provide requirements in terms of maximum transmit power but do no mandate specific radar waveform parameters nor channel access scheme policies. Techniques for interference mitigation are thus becoming very important to ensure the long-term correct operation of radars and upper-layer ADAS systems that depend on them in this complex environment. In our previous work, we have shown that organizing the radar band into time-frequency resources that do not interfere with each other vastly reduces the amount of interference by facilitating band sharing. In this paper, a metaheuristic is presented to find the optimal resource sharing between radars, knowing their relative positions and thereby the line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight interference risks during a realistic scenario. The metaheuristic aims at optimally minimizing interference while minimizing the number of resource changes that radars have to make. It is a centralized approach where everything about the system is known (e.g., the past and future positions of the vehicles). This and the high computational load induce that this algorithm is not meant to be used in real-time. However, the metaheuristic approach can be extremely useful for finding near optimal solutions in simulations, allowing for the extraction of efficient patterns, or as data generation for machine learning.

Radar-based personal identification and fall detection have received considerable attention in smart healthcare scenarios. Deep learning algorithms have been introduced to improve the performance of non-contact radar sensing applications. However, the original Transformer network is not suitable for multi-task radar-based applications to effectively extract temporal features from time-series radar signals. This article proposes the Multi-task Learning Radar Transformer (MLRT): a personal Identification and fall detection network based on IR-UWB radar. The proposed MLRT utilizes the attention mechanism of Transformer as its core to automatically extract features for personal identification and fall detection from radar time-series signals. Multi-task learning is applied to exploit the correlation between the personal identification task and the fall detection task, enhancing the performance of discrimination for both tasks. In order to suppress the impact of noise and interference, a signal processing approach is employed including DC removal and bandpass filtering, followed by clutter suppression using a RA method and Kalman filter-based trajectory estimation. An indoor radar signal dataset is generated with 11 persons under one IR-UWB radar, and the performance of MLRT is evaluated using this dataset. The measurement results show that the accuracy of MLRT improves by 8.5% and 3.6% for personal identification and fall detection, respectively, compared to state-of-the-art algorithms. The indoor radar signal dataset and the proposed MLRT source code are publicly available.

In the electronic warfare environment, the performance of ground-based radar target search is seriously degraded due to the existence of smeared spectrum (SMSP) jamming. SMSP jamming is generated by the self-defense jammer on the platform, playing an important role in electronic warfare, making traditional radars based on linear frequency modulation (LFM) waveforms face great challenges in searching for targets. To solve this problem, an SMSP mainlobe jamming suppression method based on a frequency diverse array (FDA) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar is proposed. The proposed method first uses the maximum entropy algorithm to estimate the target angle and eliminate the interference signals from the sidelobe. Then, the range-angle dependence of the FDA-MIMO radar signal is utilized, and the blind source separation (BSS) algorithm is used to separate the mainlobe interference signal and the target signal, avoiding the impact of mainlobe interference on target search. The simulation verifies that the target echo signal can be effectively separated, the similarity coefficient can reach more than 90% and the detection probability of the radar is significantly enhanced at a low signal-to-noise ratio.

Clouds cover substantial parts of the Earth's surface and they are one of the most essential components of the global climate system impacting the Earth's radiation balance as well as the water cycle redistributing water around the globe as precipitation. Therefore, continuous observation of clouds is of primary interest in climate and hydrological studies. This work documents the first efforts in Italy in remote sensing clouds and precipitation using a combination of K- and W-band (24 and 94 GHz, respectively) radar profilers. Such a dual-frequency radar configuration has not been widely used yet, but it could catch on in the near future given its lower initial cost and ease of deployment for commercially available systems at 24 GHz, with respect to more established configurations. A field campaign running at the Casale Calore observatory at the University of L'Aquila, Italy, nestled in the Apennine mountain range is described. The campaign features are preceded by a review of the literature and the underpinning theoretical background that might help newcomers, especially in the Italian community, to approach cloud and precipitation remote sensing. This activity takes place in interesting time for radar sensing clouds and precipitation, stimulated both by the launch of the ESA/JAXA EarthCARE satellite missions scheduled in 2024, which will have on-board, among other instruments, a W-band Doppler cloud radar and the proposal of new missions using cloud radars currently undergoing their feasibility studies (e.g., WIVERN and AOS in Europe and Canada, and U.S., respectively).

A radar altimeter (RA) is useful to improve autonomous functions such as landing guidance or navigation control of an aircraft. To ensure more precise and safer flights by aircraft, an interferometric RA (IRA) capable of measuring the angle of a target is required. However, the phase-comparison monopulse (PCM) technique used in IRAs has a problem in that an angular ambiguity arises with respect to a target with multiple reflection points, such as terrain. In this paper, we propose an altimetry method for IRAs that reduces the angular ambiguity by evaluating the quality of the phase. The altimetry method as introduced here is sequentially described based on synthetic aperture radar, a delay/Doppler radar altimeter, and PCM techniques. Finally, a phase quality evaluation method is proposed for use in the azimuth estimation process. Aircraft captive flight test results are presented and analyzed, and the validity of the proposed method is examined.

Deep cement mixing piles are a key technology for treating settlement distress of soft soil subgrade. However, it is very challenging to accurately evaluate the quality of pile construction due to the limitations of pile material, large number of piles and small pile spacing. Here, we propose the idea of transforming defect detection of piles into quality evaluation of ground improvement. Geological models of pile group reinforced subgrade are constructed and their ground-penetrating radar response characteristics are revealed. We have also developed ground-penetrating radar attribute analysis technology and established ground-penetrating radar technical system for evaluating the quality of ground improvement. We further prove that the ground-penetrating radar results integrating single-channel waveform, multi-channel section and attributes can effectively detect the defects and stratum structure after ground improvement. Our research results provide a rapid, efficient and economic technical solution for the quality evaluation of ground improvement in soft soil subgrade reinforcement engineering., (© 2023. In this study, we present a new method for acquiring human vital signs using a Range-Doppler matrix (RDM) of FMCW radar data and a Gaussian interpolation algorithm (GIA). First, the RDM is derived by applying a two-dimensional fast Fourier transform (2D-FFT) to the radar data, and the GIA is applied in the Doppler dimension to estimate the target velocity signal. Subsequently, a robust enhanced trend filtering (RETF) algorithm is used to eliminate the large-scale body motion from the vital signs. Finally, the time-varying filter-based empirical mode decomposition (TVF-EMD) algorithm is employed to extract the respiratory and heartbeat intrinsic mode functions (IMFs), which are filtered according to their respective spectral power to obtain the respiratory and heartbeat frequencies. The proposed method was evaluated using vital signs data collected from seven volunteers (4 males and 3 females) with Texas Instrument's AWR1642, and the results were compared with data from a reference monitor. The experiments showed that the method had an accuracy of 93 % for respiration and 95 % for heart rate in the presence of random body movements. Unlike traditional radar-based vital signs detection methods, this approach does not rely on range bin selection of the range profile matrix (RPM), thereby avoiding phase wrap problems and producing more accurate results. In this paper, we present a hybrid frequency shift keying and frequency division multiplexing (i.e., FSK-FDM) approach for information embedding in dual-function radar and communication (DFRC) design to achieve an improved communication data rate. Since most of the existing works focus on merely two-bit transmission in each pulse repetition interval (PRI) using different amplitude modulation (AM)- and phased modulation (PM)-based techniques, this paper proposes a new technique that doubles the data rate by using a hybrid FSK-FDM technique. Note that the AM-based techniques are used when the communication receiver resides in the side lobe region of the radar. In contrast, the PM-based techniques perform better if the communication receiver is in the main lobe region. However, the proposed design facilitates the delivery of information bits to the communication receivers with an improved bit rate (BR) and bit error rate (BER) regardless of their locations in the radar's main lobe or side lobe regions. That is, the proposed scheme enables information encoding according to the transmitted waveforms and frequencies using FSK modulation. Next, the modulated symbols are added together to achieve a double data rate using the FDM technique. Finally, each transmitted composite symbol contains multiple FSK-modulated symbols, resulting in an increased data rate for the communication receiver. Numerous simulation results are presented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed technique.

Passive bistatic radar research is essential for accurate 3D target tracking, especially in the presence of missing or low-quality bearing information. Traditional extended Kalman filter (EKF) methods often introduce bias in such scenarios. To overcome this limitation, we propose employing the unscented Kalman filter (UKF) for handling the nonlinearities in 3D tracking, utilizing range and range-rate measurements. Additionally, we incorporate the probabilistic data association (PDA) algorithm with the UKF to handle cluttered environments. Through extensive simulations, we demonstrate a successful implementation of the UKF-PDA framework, showing that the proposed method effectively reduces bias and significantly advances tracking capabilities in passive bistatic radars.

Tipping bucket rain gauges (TBRs) continue to be one of the most widely used pieces of equipment for rainfall monitoring; they are frequently used for the calibration, validation, and downscaling of radar and remote sensing data, due to their major advantages-low cost, simplicity and low-energy consumption. Thus, many works have focused and continue to focus on their main disadvantage-measurement biases (mainly in wind and mechanical underestimations). However, despite arduous scientific effort, calibration methodologies are not frequently implemented by monitoring networks' operators or data users, propagating bias in databases and in the different applications of such data, causing uncertainty in the modeling, management, and forecasting in hydrological research, mainly due to a lack of knowledge. Within this context, this work presents a review of the scientific advances in TBR measurement uncertainties, calibration, and error reduction strategies from a hydrological point of view, by describing different rainfall monitoring techniques, summarizing TBR measurement uncertainties, focusing on calibration and error reduction strategies, discussing the state of the art and providing future perspectives of the technology.

Vehicle-mounted ground-penetrating radar (GPR) has been used to non-destructively inspect and evaluate railway subgrade conditions. However, existing GPR data processing and interpretation methods mostly rely on time-consuming manual interpretation, and limited studies have applied machine learning methods. GPR data are complex, high-dimensional, and redundant, in particular with non-negligible noises, for which traditional machine learning methods are not effective when applied to GPR data processing and interpretation. To solve this problem, deep learning is more suitable to process large amounts of training data, as well as to perform better data interpretation. In this study, we proposed a novel deep learning method to process GPR data, the CRNN network, which combines convolutional neural networks (CNN) and recurrent neural networks (RNN). The CNN processes raw GPR waveform data from signal channels, and the RNN processes features from multiple channels. The results show that the CRNN network achieves a higher precision at 83.4%, with a recall of 77.3%. Compared to the traditional machine learning method, the CRNN is 5.2 times faster and has a smaller size of 2.6 MB (traditional machine learning method: 104.0 MB). Our research output has demonstrated that the developed deep learning method improves the efficiency and accuracy of railway subgrade condition evaluation.

Radars have been widely deployed in cars in recent years, for advanced driving assistance systems. The most popular and studied modulated waveform for automotive radar is the frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW), due to FMCW radar technology's ease of implementation and low power consumption. However, FMCW radars have several limitations, such as low interference resilience, range-Doppler coupling, limited maximum velocity with time-division multiplexing (TDM), and high-range sidelobes that reduce high-contrast resolution (HCR). These issues can be tackled by adopting other modulated waveforms. The most interesting modulated waveform for automotive radar, which has been the focus of research in recent years, is the phase-modulated continuous wave (PMCW): this modulated waveform has a better HCR, allows large maximum velocity, permits interference mitigation, thanks to codes orthogonality, and eases integration of communication and sensing. Despite the growing interest in PMCW technology, and while simulations have been extensively performed to analyze and compare its performance to FMCW, there are still only limited real-world measured data available for automotive applications. In this paper, the realization of a 1 Tx/1 Rx binary PMCW radar, assembled with connectorized modules and an FPGA, is presented. Its captured data were compared to the captured data of an off-the-shelf system-on-chip (SoC) FMCW radar. The radar processing firmware of both radars were fully developed and optimized for the tests. The measured performances in real-world conditions showed that PMCW radars manifest better behavior than FMCW radars, regarding the above-mentioned issues. Our analysis demonstrates that PMCW radars can be successfully adopted by future automotive radars.

Detailed within is an attempt to implement a real-time radar signal classification system to monitor and count bee activity at the hive entry. There is interest in keeping records of the productivity of honeybees. Activity at the entrance can be a good measure of overall health and capacity, and a radar-based approach could be cheap, low power, and versatile, beyond other techniques. Fully automated systems would enable simultaneous, large-scale capturing of bee activity patterns from multiple hives, providing vital data for ecological research and business practice improvement. Data from a Doppler radar were gathered from managed beehives on a farm. Recordings were split into 0.4 s windows, and Log Area Ratios (LARs) were computed from the data. Support vector machine models were trained to recognize flight behavior from the LARs, using visual confirmation recorded by a camera. Spectrogram deep learning was also investigated using the same data. Once complete, this process would allow for removing the camera and accurately counting the events by radar-based machine learning alone. Challenging signals from more complex bee flights hindered progress. System accuracy of 70% was achieved, but clutter impacted the overall results requiring intelligent filtering to remove environmental effects from the data.

Event-based neural networks are currently being explored as efficient solutions for performing AI tasks at the extreme edge. To fully exploit their potential, event-based neural networks coupled to adequate preprocessing must be investigated. Within this context, we demonstrate a 4-b-weight spiking neural network (SNN) for radar gesture recognition, achieving a state-of-the-art 93% accuracy within only four processing time steps while using only one convolutional layer and two fully connected layers. This solution consumes very little energy and area if implemented in event-based hardware, which makes it suited for embedded extreme-edge applications. In addition, we demonstrate the importance of signal preprocessing for achieving this high recognition accuracy in SNNs compared to deep neural networks (DNNs) with the same network topology and training strategy. We show that efficient preprocessing prior to the neural network is drastically more important for SNNs compared to DNNs. We also demonstrate, for the first time, that the preprocessing parameters can affect SNNs and DNNs in antagonistic ways, prohibiting the generalization of conclusions drawn from DNN design to SNNs. We demonstrate our findings by comparing the gesture recognition accuracy achieved with our SNN to a DNN with the same architecture and similar training. Unlike previously proposed neural networks for radar processing, this work enables ultralow-power radar-based gesture recognition for extreme-edge devices.

Concurrent validity and reliability of different technologies for sprint-derived horizontal force-velocity-power profiling. J Strength Cond Res 37(6): 1298-1305, 2023-This study evaluated the validity and reliability of common systems to assess sprint-derived horizontal force-velocity-power ( FVPH ) profile metrics. Two double constellation athlete monitoring systems (STATSports Apex, Catapult Vector S7) and one timing gate system were compared with a radar gun for the computation of FVPH metrics. Intersystem validity was assessed using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC), Pearson's correlation coefficients ( R2 ), and Bland-Altman plots with absolute and percent agreement. Intrasystem reliability was assessed with agreement bias and ICC. STATSports demonstrated moderate agreement for F0 , Pmax , τ, and Drf (8.62, 6.46, -9.81, and 9.96%, respectively) and good agreement for V0 and MSS (-2.18 and -1.62%). Catapult displayed good agreement across all metrics ( F0 , V0 , Pmax , MSS, τ, and Drf : -0.96, -0.89, -1.85, -0.84, 0.38, and -0.27%, respectively). Timing gates demonstrated good agreement with V0 and MSS (-2.62 and -1.71%) and poor agreement with F0 , Pmax , τ, and Drf (19.17, 16.64, -20.49, and 20.18%, respectively). Intrasystem reliability demonstrated good agreement (<2% bias) with very large to near-perfect ICC (0.84-0.99) for Catapult and STATSports systems. Overall, GPS/GNSS 10 Hz technology is reliable across devices and can provide moderate-to-good accuracy of FVPH metrics in single maximal effort sprints. However, Catapult provided better agreement for more FVPH metrics than STATSports, which may be related to differences in proprietary algorithms. Also, modeling timing gate data using current FVPH profiling techniques results in poor bias that requires greater investigation. Goal and Aims: To compare a bio-radar contact-free monitoring device in diagnosing obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in older people with an established home sleep apnea testing system (HST)., Focus Method/technology: A bio-radar contact-free monitoring device (OrbSense+)., Reference Method/technology: An established HST, Alice NightOne., Sample: Fifty-three out of 63 recruited subjects were included in the final analysis. The Bland-Altman plot comparing the means showed good agreement between the 2 diagnostic techniques. With more than 5 respiratory events per hour as the standard for OSA diagnosis, OrbSense+ had a sensitivity of 100% and a specificity of 100% in diagnosis of OSA (P < .0001). Non-contact technology for monitoring the vital signs of multiple individuals, such as respiration and heartbeat, has been investigated in recent years due to the rising cardiopulmonary morbidity, the risk of disease transmission, and the heavy burden on medical staff. Frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radars have shown great promise in meeting these needs, even using a single-input-single-output (SISO) setup. However, contemporary techniques for non-contact vital signs monitoring (NCVSM) via SISO FMCW radar, are based on simplistic models and present difficulties in coping with noisy environments containing multiple objects. In this work, we first develop an extended model for multi-person NCVSM via SISO FMCW radar. Then, by utilizing the sparse nature of the modeled signals in conjunction with human-typical cardiopulmonary features, we present accurate localization and NCVSM of multiple individuals in a cluttered scenario, even with only a single channel. Specifically, we provide a joint-sparse recovery mechanism to localize people and develop a robust method for NCVSM called Vital Signs-based Dictionary Recovery (VSDR), which uses a dictionary-based approach to search for the rates of respiration and heartbeat over high-resolution grids corresponding to human cardiopulmonary activity. The advantages of our method are illustrated through examples that combine the proposed model with in-vivo data of 30 individuals. We demonstrate accurate human localization in a noisy scenario that includes both static and vibrating objects and show that our VSDR approach outperforms existing NCVSM techniques based on several statistical metrics. The findings support the widespread use of FMCW radars with the proposed algorithms in healthcare.

Autonomous navigation requires multi-sensor fusion to achieve a high level of accuracy in different environments. Global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receivers are the main components in most navigation systems. However, GNSS signals are subject to blockage and multipath effects in challenging areas, e.g., tunnels, underground parking, and downtown or urban areas. Therefore, different sensors, such as inertial navigation systems (INSs) and radar, can be used to compensate for GNSS signal deterioration and to meet continuity requirements. In this paper, a novel algorithm was applied to improve land vehicle navigation in GNSS-challenging environments through radar/INS integration and map matching. Four radar units were utilized in this work. Two units were used to estimate the vehicle's forward velocity, and the four units were used together to estimate the vehicle's position. The integrated solution was estimated in two steps. First, the radar solution was fused with an INS through an extended Kalman filter (EKF). Second, map matching was used to correct the radar/INS integrated position using OpenStreetMap (OSM). The developed algorithm was evaluated using real data collected in Calgary's urban area and downtown Toronto. The results show the efficiency of the proposed method, which had a horizontal position RMS error percentage of less than 1% of the distance traveled for three minutes of a simulated GNSS outage.

This paper proposes a human activity recognition (HAR) method for frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar sensors. The method utilizes a multi-domain feature attention fusion network (MFAFN) model that addresses the limitation of relying on a single range or velocity feature to describe human activity. Specifically, the network fuses time-Doppler (TD) and time-range (TR) maps of human activities, resulting in a more comprehensive representation of the activities being performed. In the feature fusion phase, the multi-feature attention fusion module (MAFM) combines features of different depth levels by introducing a channel attention mechanism. Additionally, a multi-classification focus loss (MFL) function is applied to classify confusable samples. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves 97.58% recognition accuracy on the dataset provided by the University of Glasgow, UK. Compared to existing HAR methods for the same dataset, the proposed method showed an improvement of about 0.9-5.5%, especially in the classification of confusable activities, showing an improvement of up to 18.33%.

The reliability of autonomous driving sensing systems impacts the overall safety of the driving system. However, perception system fault diagnosis is currently a weak area of research, with limited attention and solutions. In this paper, we present an information-fusion-based fault-diagnosis method for autonomous driving perception systems. To begin, we built an autonomous driving simulation scenario using PreScan software, which collects information from a single millimeter wave (MMW) radar and a single camera sensor. The photos are then identified and labeled via the convolutional neural network (CNN). Then, we fused the sensory inputs from a single MMW radar sensor and a single camera sensor in space and time and mapped the MMW radar points onto the camera image to obtain the region of interest (ROI). Lastly, we developed a method to use information from a single MMW radar to aid in diagnosing defects in a single camera sensor. As the simulation results show, for missing row/column pixel failure, the deviation typically falls between 34.11% and 99.84%, with a response time of 0.02 s to 1.6 s; for pixel shift faults, the deviation range is between 0.32% and 9.92%, with a response time of 0 s to 0.16 s; for target color loss, faults have a deviation range of 0.26% to 2.88% and a response time of 0 s to 0.05 s. These results prove the technology is effective in detecting sensor faults and issuing real-time fault alerts, providing a basis for designing and developing simpler and more user-friendly autonomous driving systems. Furthermore, this method illustrates the principles and methods of information fusion between camera and MMW radar sensors, establishing the foundation for creating more complicated autonomous driving systems.

BACKGROUND Self-injection locking (SIL) radar uses continuous-wave radar and an injection-locked oscillator-based frequency discriminator that receives and demodulates radar signals remotely to monitor vital signs. This study aimed to compare SIL radar with traditional electrocardiogram (ECG) measurements to monitor respiratory rate (RR) and heartbeat rate (HR) during the COVID-19 pandemic at a single hospital in Taiwan. MATERIAL AND METHODS We recruited 31 hospital staff members (16 males and 15 females) for respiratory rates (RR) and heartbeat rates (HR) detection. Data acquisition with the SIL radar and traditional ECG was performed simultaneously, and the accuracy of the measurements was evaluated using Bland-Altman analysis. RESULTS To analyze the results, participates were divided into 2 groups (individual subject and multiple subjects) by gender (male and female), or 4 groups (underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obesity) by body mass index (BMI). The results were analyzed using mean bias errors (MBE) and limits of agreement (LOA) with a 95% confidence interval. Bland-Altman plots were utilized to illustrate the difference between the SIL radar and ECG monitor. In all BMI groups, results of RR were more accurate than HR, with a smaller MBE. Furthermore, RR and HR measurements of the male groups were more accurate than those of the female groups. CONCLUSIONS We demonstrated that non-contact SIL radar could be used to accurately measure HR and RR for hospital healthcare during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Human activity recognition (HAR) is becoming increasingly important, especially with the growing number of elderly people living at home. However, most sensors, such as cameras, do not perform well in low-light environments. To address this issue, we designed a HAR system that combines a camera and a millimeter wave radar, taking advantage of each sensor and a fusion algorithm to distinguish between confusing human activities and to improve accuracy in low-light settings. To extract the spatial and temporal features contained in the multisensor fusion data, we designed an improved CNN-LSTM model. In addition, three data fusion algorithms were studied and investigated. Compared to camera data in low-light environments, the fusion data significantly improved the HAR accuracy by at least 26.68%, 19.87%, and 21.92% under the data level fusion algorithm, feature level fusion algorithm, and decision level fusion algorithm, respectively. Moreover, the data level fusion algorithm also resulted in a reduction of the best misclassification rate to 2%~6%. These findings suggest that the proposed system has the potential to enhance the accuracy of HAR in low-light environments and to decrease human activity misclassification rates.

This paper presents a 160 GHz, D-band, low-noise amplifier (LNA) and a D-band power amplifier (PA) implemented in the Global Foundries 22 nm CMOS FDSOI. The two designs are used for the contactless monitoring of vital signs in the D-band. The LNA is based on multiple stages of a cascode amplifier topology with a common source topology adopted as the input and output stages. The input stage of the LNA is designed for simultaneous input and output matching, while the inter-stage-matching networks are designed for maximizing the voltage swing. The LNA achieved a maximum gain of 17 dB at 163 GHz. The input return loss was quite poor in the 157-166 GHz frequency band. The -3 dB gain bandwidth corresponded to 157-166 GHz. The measured noise figure was between 7.6 dB and 8 dB within the -3 dB gain bandwidth. The power amplifier achieved an output 1 dB compression point of 6.8 dBm at 159.75 GHz. The measured power consumptions of the LNA and the PA were 28.8 mW and 10.8 mW, respectively.

Urban floods are more concerned in recent days due to their substantial effect in loss of human lives and properties. Due to climate change, urban floods are frequently observed in many parts of the world. Flood events in Chennai city are a frequent scenario due to rapid increase in the density of population. Adyar river watershed and surrounding urban cover are focused in the present study. The present study aims at mapping flooded region using Sentinel 1A datasets over Adyar watershed. Series of Sentinel 1A image is collected before, during and after floods for mapping the extent of flood and mapping risk zones in Adyar watershed. Methodologies such as ISODATA Technique, Multi-Temporal Analysis, Thresholding Method, PCA and ICA Analysis and Grey Level Co-Occurrence Matrix are adopted for the extraction of flooded extent from the SAR datasets. Analysis performed over the Adyar watershed provided promising results in the extraction of flooded extent with Thresholding Method and Grey Level Co-Occurrence Matrix being the dominant of all the methods. Though higher accuracy is obtained in the extraction of flooded extent, limitation of layover, foreshortening and shadow is experienced in the built up region for the extraction of flooded pixels., (© 2023. Oil spills are the main threats to marine and coastal environments. Due to the increase in the marine transportation and shipping industry, oil spills have increased in recent years. Moreover, the rapid spread of oil spills in open waters seriously affects the fragile marine ecosystem and creates environmental concerns. Effective monitoring, quick identification, and estimation of the volume of oil spills are the first and most crucial steps for a successful cleanup operation and crisis management. Remote Sensing observations, especially from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) sensors, are a very suitable choice for this purpose due to their ability to collect data regardless of the weather and illumination conditions and over far and large areas of the Earth. Owing to the relatively complex nature of SAR observations, machine learning (ML) based algorithms play an important role in accurately detecting and monitoring oil spills and can significantly help experts in faster and more accurate detection. This paper uses SAR images from ESA's Copernicus Sentinel-1 satellite to detect and locate oil spills in open waters under different environmental conditions. To this end, a deep learning framework has been presented to identify oil spills automatically. The SAR images were segmented into two classes, the oil slick and the background, using convolutional neural networks (CNN) and vision transformers (ViT). Various scenarios for the proposed architecture were designed by placing ViT networks in different parts of the CNN backbone. An extensive dataset of oil spill events in various regions across the globe was used to train and assess the performance of the proposed framework. After the detection performance assessments, the F1-score values for the standard DeepLabV3+, FC-DenseNet, and U-Net networks were 75.08 %, 73.94 %, and 60.85, respectively. In the combined networks models (combination of CNN and ViT), the best F1-score results were obtained as 78.48 %. Our results showed that these hybrid models could improve detection accuracy and have a high ability to distinguish oil spill borders even in noisy images. Topsoil loss is a widespread environmental concern causing adverse impacts on natural and human systems. Severe weather accompanied with human activities can exacerbate this issue degrading soil health and consequently accelerating global and regional food insecurity. Erosion impairs soil physical and chemical properties such as infiltration rate, water holding capacity, loss of nutrients including soil carbon and nitrogen. Although, temporal properties of a rainfall event have meaningful implications, spatial heterogeneity of a rainfall contributes substantially and cannot be overlooked. Therefore, in this study, we investigated soil loss using weather radar NEXRAD data. We developed extreme rainfall (ER) scenarios and land use practices (nomgt, S0, S1, S2, and S3) and evaluated the watershed response. We found that grazing can manifold soil loss, and if accompanied with extreme rainfalls, soil loss accelerates impacting different subbasins each time. Our results suggest that spatial heterogeneity of ERs can be more significant in individual extreme rainfalls, however, over a year, soil moisture and type of the management practices (grazing and farming) could contribute more to topsoil loss. We classified watershed subbasins into different classes of soil loss severity to determine the soil loss hotspots. Soil loss can go as high as 350 (ton/ha/yr) under the ERs. Land use practices can increase erosion by 3600%. Slight increase in rainfall concentration (S1) can put vulnerable subbasins in extremely severe class (>150 ton/ha/yr). Under moderate increase in the rainfall concentration (S2) more subbasins fall into extremely severe category yielding approximately 200 ton/ha/yr. Under high increase in rainfall concentration (S3) almost all the subbasins fall into the extremely severe class yielding >200 ton/ha/yr. We found that in vulnerable subbasins, up to 10% increase in (Concentration Ratio Index) CI can increase annual soil loss up to 75%. Single ER can generate up to 35% of annual soil loss. Under one ER event soil loss hotspot subbasins can lose up to 160 ton/ha/day. 32% and 80% increase in rainfall amount for an ER event can increase soil loss by 94% and 285% respectively. The results, also, reveal that grazing and farming can be responsible for up 50% of soil loss. Our findings indicate the importance of site-specific managements to mitigate soil loss and all the consequences. Our study can help in better soil loss management implementation.
