Parallel texts represent a very valuable resource in many applications of natural language processing. The fundamental step in creating parallel corpus is the alignment. Sentence alignment is the issue of finding correspondence between source sentences and their equivalent translations in the target text. A number of automatic sentence alignment approaches were proposed including neural networks, which can be divided into length-based, lexicon-based, and translation-based. In our study, we used five different aligners, namely Bilingual sentence aligner (BSA), Hunalign, Bleualign, Vecalign, and Bertalign. We evaluated both, the performance of the Bertalign in terms of accuracy against the up to now employed aligners as well as among each other in the language pair English-Sovak. We created our custom corpus consisting of texts collected in 2021 and 2022. Vecalign and Bertalign performed statistically significantly best and BSA the worst. Objectives: Occupational allergic respiratory diseases frequently occur in individuals working in the agricultural and food production sectors, textile manufacturing, and industries involving exposure to isocyanates. The study aimed to describe trends surrounding the prevalence of occupational asthma (OA), occupational rhinitis (OR), and occupational hypersensitivity pneumonitis (OHP) in Eastern Slovakia between 1990-2021., Methods: All cases of OA, OR, and OHP registered in a database at the Louis Pasteur University Hospital in Košice, Slovakia, between 1990 and 2021, were divided into categories based on economic sector (agricultural, food production sectors, textile manufacturing, healthcare, industrial manufacturing, and tertiary sector) and causal agent. Changes in disease prevalence, causal agents, and economic sector association over time were analysed., Results: There were 287 occupational respiratory cases (179 OA, 65 OR, and 43 OHP cases). The annual prevalence of OA declined significantly over the study period (p < 0.05). Overall, there was a significant decrease in cases from the agricultural (p < 0.001) and an increase in the industrial manufacturing (p < 0.01). The number of cases due to farming agents fell markedly over the study period, while metalworking fluids (MWFs) were found to be the most common causes of allergic respiratory diseases since 2018., Conclusions: This study found a decrease in the number of OA cases, as well as changes in economic sectors and causal agents associated with OA and OHP, specifically, in the agricultural sector, with MWFs from the industrial manufacturing sector now being the most common aetiological agent.

Objectives: Celiac disease (CD) is a chronic autoimmune disorder caused by a complex interplay between genetic and environmental factors. The main goal of our case-control study was to analyse the association of environmental factors with the odds of CD development in a sample of the Slovak population., Methods: Data were collected from 1,226 respondents (534 CD patients and 692 controls) by a questionnaire. The impact of analysed parameters on the chance of disease development was assessed by multiple regression analysis and expressed as odds ratios (OR). Values of p < 0.05 were considered statistically significant., Results: In the patient group, celiac disease was significantly more prevalent in women than in men (OR = 1.52, p = 0.010). Respondents with a positive family history of CD showed 2.9-fold higher odds of CD compared to others (p < 0.001), and respondents with coexisting autoimmune diseases had 2.6-fold higher odds of CD (p < 0.001). Subjects who had taken antibiotics at least three times a year during childhood had 1.95-fold higher odds of developing CD compared to those who took them less frequently or not at all (p = 0.022). Conversely, individuals who were breastfed in infancy had lower odds of CD compared to non-breastfed respondents (OR = 0.53, p < 0.001). The mode of delivery (vaginal vs. caesarean section), overcoming severe infections, and the timing of gluten introduction in childhood did not show a statistically significant effect on the odds of developing CD., Conclusion: Based on our data, being female, having a positive family history of CD, suffering from another autoimmune disease, and frequent use of antibiotics are factors associated with an increased chance of developing CD. On the other hand, breastfeeding in infancy seems to have a protective effect. Our findings highlight the importance of further research in understanding the complexities of this autoimmune condition and providing a foundation for prevention strategies.

Inland recreational fishing is primarily considered a leisure-driven activity in freshwaters, yet its harvest can contribute to food systems. Here we estimate that the harvest from inland recreational fishing equates to just over one-tenth of all reported inland fisheries catch globally. The estimated total consumptive use value of inland recreational fish destined for human consumption may reach US$9.95 billion annually. We identify Austria, Canada, Germany and Slovakia as countries above the third quantile for nutrition, economic value and climate vulnerability. These results have important implications for populations dependent on inland recreational fishing for food. The objective of this study is to summarize the factors, including religion, affecting an individual's decision to get vaccinated or reject vaccination. Anonymous questionnaire-based electronic study is conducted in all faculties of medicine in Czech and Slovak republics. One thousand four hundred and six (1406) questionnaires were analyzed. Responders not practicing any religion received vaccination more often and would recommend vaccination more often. Catholic religion was the most important demographic factor affecting the rate of vaccination. In the group of Catholic female students, 21.9% were vaccinated. In the group of non-Catholic female students, 55.5% were vaccinated. Objectives: The purpose of this quantitative study is to assess the impact of fine particles air pollution in major cities of Slovakia. The study aims to estimate number of premature deaths from long-term exposure to fine particles PM 2.5 in eight regional capitals of Slovakia in the period 2016-2020. Consequently, the study aims to conduct a comparative analysis using secondary derived indicators., Methods: For calculations of estimated premature deaths from long-term exposure to fine particles PM 2.5 air pollution we used standardized methodology developed by the World Health Organization and the European Environment Agency., Results: The annual average of estimated premature deaths from PM 2.5 air pollution in the studied period was in Bratislava 353, Košice 219, Prešov 84, Žilina 90, Banská Bystrica 76, Nitra 73, Trnava 59, and Trenčín 52. In relative terms per 1,000 inhabitants Bratislava had annual average 1.14 of estimated premature deaths, Košice 1.32, Prešov 1.38, Žilina 1.61, Banská Bystrica 1.35, Nitra 1.35, Trnava 1.27, and Trenčín 1.31. Bratislava as the largest city in Slovakia recorded the smallest relative number of estimated premature deaths. The worst results were recorded by the city of Žilina., Conclusions: The estimated number of premature deaths from long-term exposure to particulate matter air pollution in the regional capitals decreased in the given period. The most of the regional capitals with the exception of Bratislava and Žilina, showed similar levels of estimated premature deaths. However, the current geopolitical situation and rising energy prices threaten return to solid fuel burning which is the largest source of particulate matter air pollution in Slovakia and thus reversing positive trends.

Aims: To evaluate the psychometric properties of the Perceived Implicit Rationing of Nursing Care (PIRNCA) instrument and to report the prevalence of rationed care at university and faculty hospitals., Design: A cross-sectional study., Methods: The study was carried out at two university and five faculty hospitals in the Slovak Republic. Participants were 895 Registered Nurses recruited by the purposive sampling method between December 2017-July 2018. Data were collected using the PIRNCA instrument. Construct validity and reliability of the instrument were tested., Results: The prevalence of rationed care at university and faculty hospitals was identified as being 42.1%. Furthermore, 87.6% of nurses reported rationing one or more nursing care activities. Using both statistical methods when evaluating the PIRNCA resulted in the confirmation that the tool is valid and reliable., Conclusion: Rationed care is a common phenomenon at university and faculty hospitals. The PIRNCA is a suitable instrument to measure the phenomenon in adult acute care units because of its high reliability and validity. We recommend using the instrument in different contexts, not only for specific conditions that were presented for this study., Impact: Rationed care at university and faculty hospitals has never been reported. Psychometric properties of the instrument that measures nurses´ perception of rationed care have never been evaluated by using different approaches. The most frequently rationed nursing care activities are those that nurses are competent to initiate on the basis of their knowledge and skills - the independent ones. The PIRNCA is a valid and reliable instrument. Hospital management can use the instrument to explore the prevalence of rationed care, followed by the application of prevention strategies. Cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL) is the most common hereditary vascular disorder causing ischaemic attacks and strokes in middle-aged adults. Though the clinical spectrum includes some typical symptoms, recognition of the disease, especially at an earlier stage, is very difficult because of the highly variable manifestation and incomplete clinical picture. Characteristic brain MRI findings and the presence of pathogenic variants in the NOTCH3 gene are fundamental for CADASIL diagnosis. In this paper, we provide the first comprehensive report on CADASIL patients from Slovakia. Altogether, we identified 23 different pathogenic variants in 35 unrelated families. In our cohort of patients with clinical suspicion of CADASIL, we found a causal genetic defect and confirmed the diagnosis in 10.2% of cases. We present the case reports with up-to-date unpublished NOTCH3 variants and describe their phenotype-genotype correlation: p.(Cys65Phe), p.(Pro86Leu/Ser502Phe), p.(Arg156*), p.(Cys408Arg), p.(Tyr423Cys), p.(Asp1720His), and p.(Asp1893Thrfs*13). The most frequently described location for pathogenic variants was in exon 4, whereas the most common single variant was p.Arg1076Cys in exon 20. Based on the results of our study, we propose a re-evaluation of the criteria for the selection of patients suitable for NOTCH3 gene analysis. The main aim of this study was to determine the concentration of total mercury (T-Hg) in different tissues, hair, and faeces from a long-lived animal that actively lives in the subalpine and alpine zone within temperate climate zone throughout the year. Levels of T-Hg in samples from naturally deceased Tatra chamois (n = 72) from the Tatra Mountains (Slovakia) were determined using direct mercury analyses on the basis of dry weight. The mercury concentrations in hair samples were compared over the last three decades. Seasonal changes in mercury concentration and differences in the amounts of mercury in various tissues, hairs, and faeces between age and sex groups were also studied. The highest mercury concentrations in organs were found in the kidneys of Tatra chamois, with mean values of 0.45 ± 0.07 μg/g (dry weight) for adults (n = 18) and 0.39 ± 0.12 μg/g (dry weight) for juveniles (n = 6). These values are considerably high compared to expected Hg levels in wild ungulates from foothill and mountain areas in the temperate zone. Juveniles had higher levels of T-Hg in their muscles (0.011 ± 0.001 μg/g dry weight, n = 10) and faeces (0.189 ± 0.025 μg/g dry weight, n = 7) when compared to adults that had 0.007 ± 0.001 μg/g dry weight of T-Hg in muscles (n = 29) and 0.113 ± 0.015 μg/g dry of T-Hg weight in faeces (n = 19). T-Hg concentrations in individual tissues (heart, kidney, liver, lungs, spleen, tongue, muscle, bone), hairs, and faeces were not significantly different between males and females. Mercury levels in the hair of Tatra chamois have increased significantly since the 1990s (median value of T-Hg: 0.025 μg/g dry weight) with the highest values presenting during the 2000s (0.029 μg/g dry weight). Since 2010 (0.016 μg/g dry weight), levels have declined when compared to those observed during the 1990s and 2000s. Therefore, we can conclude that T-Hg deposition in alpine areas of the Tatra Mountains shows a declining trend since the 2010s. T-Hg concentrations in the heart, muscle, and hair were higher in summer compared to winter. Seasonal changes in mercury concentrations are likely most related to the seasonal availability of food, but may also be related to moulting periods, and this correlation must be explored further., (© 2021. Climate change is one of the major threats to biodiversity, but its impact varies among the species. Bark beetles (Ips spp.), as well as other wood-boring pests of European forests, show escalating numbers in response to the changes driven by climate change and seriously affect the survival of the forests through the massive killing of trees. Many methods were developed to control these wood-boring beetles, however, their implementation can be detrimental for other forest specialists. Ants are widely used for biological pest-control, so in our study, we aimed to test the effect of Formica polyctena on the control of the wood-boring beetles. The results show that the proportion of infested trees is significantly reduced by the increase of the number of F. polyctena nests, with a strong effect on those infested by Ips species. We also show that the boring beetle community is shaped by different biotic and abiotic factors, including the presence of F. polyctena nests. However, the boring beetle infestation was not related to the latitude, altitude and age of the forests. Aim: To examine variations in the safety climate reported by nurses in Slovak hospitals and to analyse the association between dimensions of the patient safety climate and demographic and organisational factors., Background: A deeper understanding of how safety climate varies across hospitals can be useful in determining areas with a potential for improvement. Staffing and non-punitive response to errors were identified in recent research syntheses as the weakest dimensions of safety climate that require strengthening., Methods: The sample consisted of 1,429 nurses working in public and private hospitals in Slovakia. The Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture questionnaire was used for data collection, and descriptive analysis was carried out to examine relationships between variables., Results: Nurses working in general private hospitals with a bed capacity of less than 500 beds were more positive about their hospital safety climate than other nurses working in differently organised hospitals. The lowest number of positive responses was scored in the domain of 'Non-Punitive Response to Error'. This result came from a blame-free error-reporting atmosphere., Conclusions: Nurses perceived a higher level of patient safety when they had experienced better sharing of information on event reporting and had better learning opportunities., Implications for Nursing Management: The results revealed strengths and weaknesses of the patient safety climate in the network of Slovak hospitals from the perspective of nurses working in these hospitals. The authentication of Slovak wines in comparison to other similar wines from various geographical regions, namely Hungary, France, Austria, and Ukraine, was conducted using the OC-PLS, DD-SIMCA, and PLS-DM models, all of them operating in rigorous way. The study involved 63 samples, of which 41 originated from Slovakia, covering diverse wine types such as varietal wines, cuvée selections (different "putňový"), and essence. To capture digital images under controlled conditions, a custom-made cardboard box with white inner surfaces was devised and equipped with a smartphone. During the training phase, sensitivities of 96%, 100%, and 96% were attained for OC-PLS, DD-SIMCA, and PLS-DM, respectively. In the subsequent stages of validation and testing for DD-SIMCA and PLS-DM, the proposed methods displayed optimal efficiency, achieving both sensitivity and specificity rates of 100%. Twenty-eight beekeepers around Slovakia were included in the research to evaluate the presence of mercury in honeybee bodies and selected bee-related products: bee pollen and honey. The samples were collected in May, June, and July (honeybee bodies only in May and June). During this period, moss and lichen bags for air quality assessment were exposed around the beehives and relative accumulation factor (RAF) was used for its evaluation. Mercury content in evaluated bioindicators was determined using AMA 254 analyser. Percentage of provisional tolerable intake (%PTWI) and target hazard quotient (THQ) were used to determine health risks related to bee pollen and honey consumption. Around the beehives the proportion of landscape structure elements was determined for each sampling locality, using a geographical informational system QGIS. The aim of the study was a comprehensive evaluation of the mercury content in the environment around beehives using several bioindicators and an assessment of the relationship between the presence of mercury pollution and the proportion of landscape structure elements in the vicinity of the beehives. Pressure ulcers/injuries (PU/Is) are a burden on healthcare systems worldwide. They are costly and have a negative impact on the quality of life of patients. PU/Is cause discomfort, prolong hospital stays and can even lead to death. Data on the incidence and prevalence of PU/Is are used to implement effective, tailored prevention practices. The aim of this paper is to highlight the importance and value of collecting epidemiological data in terms of its practical use in Slovakia. The prevalence of PU/Is was found to be low compared to global data. Shortcomings in the collection of epidemiological data are highlighted; however, the use of those available data in amending national standards, such as the mandatory reporting of PU/Is, is summarised. Several steps and activities related to the prevention and care of PU/Is have been carried out in Slovakia. It is important to know not only the prevalence in terms of field of care, time and provider, but also, more specifically, the risk characteristics and/or presence of PU/I in order to initiate more individualised and tailored patient care.

Background: In the years to come, artificial intelligence will become an indispensable tool in medical practice. The digital transformation will undoubtedly affect today's medical students. This study focuses on trust from the perspective of three groups of medical students - students from Croatia, students from Slovakia, and international students studying in Slovakia., Methods: A paper-pen survey was conducted using a non-probabilistic convenience sample. In the second half of 2022, 1715 students were surveyed at five faculties in Croatia and three in Slovakia., Results: Specifically, 38.2% of students indicated familiarity with the concept of AI, while 44.8% believed they would use AI in the future. Patient readiness for the implementation of technologies was mostly assessed as being low. More than half of the students, 59.1%, believe that the implementation of digital technology (AI) will negatively impact the patient-physician relationship and 51,3% of students believe that patients will trust physicians less. The least agreement with the statement was observed among international students, while a higher agreement was expressed by Slovak and Croatian students 40.9% of Croatian students believe that users do not trust the healthcare system, 56.9% of Slovak students agree with this view, while only 17.3% of international students share this opinion. The ability to explain to patients how AI works if they were asked was statistically significantly different for the different student groups, international students expressed the lowest agreement, while the Slovak and Croatian students showed a higher agreement., Conclusion: This study provides insight into medical students' attitudes from Croatia, Slovakia, and international students regarding the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the future healthcare system, with a particular emphasis on the concept of trust. A notable difference was observed between the three groups of students, with international students differing from their Croatian and Slovak colleagues. Purpose: Crenosoma vulpis (Dujardin,1845) is a lungworm which has spread worldwide in canines and is associated with upper respiratory infections. In a majority of cases, the infections are accompanied with chronic cough. Diagnosis of lungworms is often underdiagnosed and can be misinterpreted as other respiratory diseases., Methods: The Small Animal Clinic of the University Veterinary Hospital admitted an 11-month-old dog presented with persistent cough associated with difficulty in breathing and even asphyxia. Based on clinical symptoms, the patient underwent radiological and bronchoscopic examination. Bronchoscopy revealed the presence of lungworms obturating the branches of the tracheobronchial tree. Larvae were collected by bronchoscopic lavage and subjected to parasitological and molecular examination., Results: Microscopic detection and morphological identification of the worms removed during the bronchoscopy confirmed the presence of female adult worms. The subsequent molecular characterisation of the mitochondrial (cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene (cox1) and 12S ribosomal DNA (rDNA)), nuclear (18S rDNA) genes, as well as the analysis of the second internal transcribed spacer (ITS-2) region of the ribosomal DNA, confirmed the Crenosoma vulpis species. Faecal samples were processed using the Baermann method, which confirmed the presence of the larval stage 1 of C. vulpis. The therapy with fenbendazole at a dose of 50 mg/kg of live weight once daily for the period of 7 days was initiated for the patient., Conclusion: This paper presents the first molecularly confirmed clinical case of a Crenosoma vulpis infection in an 11-month-old female dog of the Miniature Schnauzer breed in Slovakia., (© 2024. Among bee species, the western honey bee (Apis mellifera) is preferred in monitoring studies performed in the agricultural landscape, while bee matrices, pollen, and honey are mostly a subject of these studies due to their unique composition. A justified question about the relevance of other bee matrices, like larvae, foragers, beebread, and/or wax, has been raised. The ability of different bee matrices (wax, pollen grains, bee bread, foragers, larvae, nectar, and honey) to absorb pesticide residues is subjected in this study. All samples were collected during a crop flowering season (oilseed rape) on intensively managed agricultural land in Slovakia and Germany. The observed high variability in residue levels, profile, and number of detections among studied matrices from Germany, west, and east Slovakia gave us an assumption of the use of different agricultural practices between these two countries. Fungicides clearly dominated across all samples in all sampling regions. The increased pesticide profile positively correlated with the oilseed rape pollen grains in pollen pellets and/or bee bread. Radiocarbon measurements of total carbon (TC) fraction of aerosol samples collected at the campus of the Comenius University in Bratislava (Slovakia) during 2022-2023 were carried out. Based on radiocarbon activity of these samples and a source apportionment model we have determined the relative proportion of fossil and non-fossil carbon in collected atmospheric aerosols. The carbon from non-fossil sources (biomass burning and biogenic emissions) was dominant in this time period, on average it formed 72% of carbon present in the aerosols from the atmosphere of Bratislava. The whole range of determined non-fossil fraction was relatively small as it varied only from 0.67 (August-September) to 0.82 (December-January). Aim: The study aimed to measure and compare differences (a) in the unfinished nursing care interventions overall and the order in which they are left unfinished; and (b) in the underline reasons, as perceived by Italian, Slovak and Turkish nursing students., Background: In recent years, in the nursing education context a novel line of research in the field of unfinished nursing care as those interventions required by patients, but omitted or delayed, has emerged. However, no studies have been conducted at the international level., Design: An international, comparative cross-sectional study was performed in 2022-2023 and reported here according to Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology guidelines., Methods: A multinational research network was formed with a convenient sample of 13 universities and 60 campuses (4595 students). The Unfinished Nursing Care Survey for Students (UNCS4S) was administered. A total of 1850 students participated., Results: According to the UNCS4S total score, Italians reported an average 50.9 out of 110 unfinished nursing care interventions (CI95 % 47.6-54.1), Slovakians 54.9 (CI95 % 53.7-56.1) and Turkish students 50.4 (CI95 % 49.2-51.5) (p<0.001). Some interventions were reported more often as unfinished across countries as supervising the task assigned to the nursing aides, going to the patient without being called, spending the required time with the patient and their caregivers and emotionally supporting patients and their caregivers. In terms of reasons, total scores were statistically different across countries (Italy: 45.92 out of 90, CI95 % 43.91-47.9; Slovakia: 62, CI95 % 61.02-62.98; Türkiye: 72.29, CI95 % 71.13-73.45; p<0.001); however, at the factor level, communication issues, lack of material resources and issues in supervision of nursing aides were reported in all countries as the most important reasons of the unfinished nursing care., Conclusions: Students learn to shape and set priorities early in their nursing careers with similar order in what to leave unfinished as first, despite the different educational structures, care cultures and healthcare systems. Among the unfinished nursing care reasons perceived, the most influential were similar across countries, suggesting common areas for improvement. Introduction: There is a substantial lack of data regarding the prevalence of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and functional dyspepsia (FD) in the region of Central/Eastern Europe. It is a well-described and known fact that environmental, ethnic, dietary, and cultural factors can influence the reporting of symptoms. Therefore, we aim to provide the first data documenting the prevalence of specific disorders of gut-brain interaction in Slovakia., Methods: This is a multicenter-based study. The study population consists of medical students from three medical faculties in Slovakia, mainly with Slovakian and Scandinavian permanent residency. Data collection was performed by means of anonymous questionnaires consisting of several demographic questions. Two forms of questionnaires were used. One was in paper form, and the second was distributed via email., Results: Altogether, 1061 students participated in this study. Symptoms of IBS were presented in 7.3% of students, and FD in 13%. In the Slovakian group, these were FD 12%, and IBS 7%. The subgroup from Scandinavia shows a prevalence of IBS of 11.7% and FD of 14.0%. A lack of exercise and a vegan diet are related to a higher presence of FD., Conclusion: The results of this multicentre study represent the first published data for the presence of symptoms of IBS and FD in Slovakia. Our data also show a significantly higher prevalence of IBS in students from Scandinavia compared with those from Central/Eastern Europe. A higher frequency of physical exercise is associated with a lower presence of symptoms of FD. Landfills, especially those poorly managed, can negatively affect the environment and human beings through chemical contamination of soils and waters. This study investigates the soils of a historical municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill situated in the heart of a residential zone in the capital of Slovakia, Bratislava, with an emphasis on metal (loid) contamination and its consequences. Regardless of the depth, many of the soils exhibited high metal (loid) concentrations, mainly Cd, Cu, Pb, Sb, Sn and Zn (up to 24, 2620, 2420, 134, 811 and 6220 mg/kg, respectively), classifying them as extremely contaminated based on the geo-accumulation index (I geo >5). The stable lead isotopic ratios of the landfill topsoil varied widely (1.1679-1.2074 for 206 Pb/ 207 Pb and 2.0573-2.1111 for 208 Pb/ 206 Pb) and indicated that Pb contained a natural component and an anthropogenic component, likely municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) ash and construction waste. Oral bioaccessibility of metal (loid)s in the topsoil was variable with Cd (73.2-106%) and Fe (0.98-2.10%) being the most and least bioaccessible, respectively. The variation of metal (loid) bioaccessibility among the soils could be explained by differences in their geochemical fractionation as shown by positive correlations of bioaccessibility values with the first two fractions of BCR (Community Bureau of Reference) sequential extraction for As, Cd, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sn and Zn. The results of geochemical fractionation coupled with the mineralogical characterisation of topsoil showed that the reservoir of bioaccessible metal (loid)s was calcite and Fe (hydr)oxides. Based on aqua regia metal (loid) concentrations, a non-carcinogenic risk was demonstrated for children (HI = 1.59) but no risk taking into account their bioaccessible concentrations (HI = 0.65). Attention on work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) involves statistical surveys showing an increasing trend in the incidence of WMSDs. Technological development has led to new tools and methods for the assessment of physical load at work. These methods are mostly based on the direct sensing of appropriate parameters, which allows more precise quantification. The aim of this paper is to compare several commonly used methods in Slovakia for the assessment of ergonomic risk reflecting current EU and Slovak legislative regulations. A Captiv wireless sensory system was used at a car headlight quality control assembly workplace for sensing, data acquisition and data processing. During the evaluation of postures and movements at work, we discovered differences in the applicable standards: Decree 542/2007 Coll. (Slovak Legislation), the STN EN 1005-4+A1, and the French standards default in the Captiv system. Standards define the thresholds for hazardous postures with significant differences in several evaluated body segments, which affects the final evaluation of the measurements. Our experience from applying improved risk assessment methodology may have an impact on Slovak industrial workplaces. It was confirmed that there is a need to create uniform standards for the ergonomic risk assessment of body posture, including a detailed description of the threshold values for individual body segments.

The article by Ceppi and colleagues, Genotoxic Effects of Occupational Exposure to, Glass Fibres - A Human Biomonitoring Study, published in Mutation Research -Genetic Toxicology and Environmental Mutagenesis in 2023 was reviewed with great interest. The authors undertook a novel approach to conducting a biomonitoring study of genotoxicity markers among a population of glass fibre manufacturing workers in Slovakia. On the surface, the Ceppi et al. (2023) study provides an interesting application of genotoxicity markers among a human population of workers to explore potential markers of effect (DNA strand breaks) and potential risk of susceptibility (e.g., genetic damage, disease, death). However, limited data for exposure reconstruction, uncertain influences from smoking history, and lack of consideration of decades of human epidemiology research showing no increased risk of malignant or non-malignant respiratory disease and mortality among glass fibre manufacturing workers, reveals that the conclusions of the authors are overreaching and inconsistent with the existing science. The limitations of this study preclude the ability to draw causal inferences or conclusions about DNA strand breaks as a marker of exposure, effect, or susceptibility within this population of Slovakian glass fibre workers. Fifty-five years of radiocarbon variation studies are reviewed with an emphasis on a better understanding of the impacts of the Bohunice nuclear power plant and fossil fuel CO 2 on the atmosphere and biosphere of Slovakia. The maximum Δ 14 C levels in the air up to about 1200‰ were observed during the 1970s at the Žlkovce monitoring station, which after 2005 decreased to <30‰. A relative decrease in the atmospheric Δ 14 C levels due to increasing levels of fossil CO 2 in the atmosphere has also been significant, for example, in Bratislava down to about -330‰, but after 2005 they were only <50‰ below the Jungfraujoch European clean-air level. The tree-ring data, averaging the annual Δ 14 C levels for several stations in Slovakia, have been in agreement with the atmospheric data, as well as with the newly established clean-air station at Jasná in central Slovakia. Future 14 C levels will depend strongly on fossil CO 2 levels in the atmosphere, which will change the bomb 14 C era to the fossil CO 2 era. New investigations of 14 C variations in the atmosphere-biosphere-hydrosphere compartments represent a great challenge for radiocarbon science, important for better understanding of environmental processes, climate change, and impacts of human activities on the total environment. Recent studies have shown that mitochondria are involved in the pathogenesis of Covid-19. Mitochondria play a role in production of reactive oxygen species and induction of an innate immune response, both important during infections. Common variability of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) can affect oxidative phosphorylation and the risk or lethality of cardiovascular, neurodegenerative diseases and sepsis. However, it is unclear whether susceptibility of severe Covid-19 might be affected by mtDNA variation. Thus, we have analyzed mtDNA in a sample of 446 Slovak patients hospitalized due to Covid-19 and a control population group consisting of 1874 individuals. MtDNA variants in the HVRI region have been analyzed and classified into haplogroups at various phylogenetic levels. Binary logistic regression was used to assess the risk of Covid-19. Haplogroups T1, H11, K and variants 16256C > T, 16265A > C, 16293A > G, 16311 T > C and 16399A > G were associated with an increased Covid-19 risk. On contrary, Haplogroup J1, haplogroup clusters H + U5b and T2b + U5b, and the mtDNA variant 16189 T > C were associated with decreased risk of Covid-19. Following the application of the Bonferroni correction, statistical significance was observed exclusively for the cluster of haplogroups H + U5b. Unsurprisingly, the most significant factor contributing to the mortality of patients with Covid-19 is the age of patients. Our findings suggest that mtDNA haplogroups can play a role in Covid-19 pathogenesis, thus potentially useful in identifying susceptibility to its severe form. Objectives: Our research aimed to examine children's sleeping habits from preschool to the end of elementary school age. Developing proper sleeping habits in childhood is essential, as it is decisive for the rest of our lives., Methods: A total of 339 children (160 males and 179 females) took part in the research, of which 145 were preschool-age children (3-7 years old), 72 lower-grade elementary school children (6-11 years old), and 122 upper-grade elementary school children (12-16 years old). The questionnaire was completed in a paper form (elementary school students) and online (kindergarten children)., Results: The research results show that most of the children spend enough time sleeping following the recommendations. In case of the kindergarten children, the younger ones also sleep in the afternoon on weekends (average of 3.66 years, 28.3%), and the older ones do not sleep in the afternoon either in kindergarten during the week or at home at the weekend (average of 5.22 years, 46.2%). The use of blue light typically increases with age; 39% of the preschoolers, 61% of the 6-11-year-olds, and 67% of the 12-16-year-olds use it before falling asleep. Sleep aids and rituals are used by 87.6% of the preschoolers, 67.4% of the 6-11-year-olds, and 34.4% of the 12-16-year-olds, because significantly more preschoolers find it more difficult to fall asleep than older children. At night, 40% of the preschoolers wake up at least once (due to biological needs - 46.3%), 32% of the 6-11-year-olds wake up at night (due to nightmares - 42.3%), and 41% of the 12-16-year-olds also wake up all night (due to biological needs - 31.9%, and due to noise - 29.8%)., Conclusion: Although the children get enough sleep, significantly more upper-grade school children feel tired in the morning. It is essential to help sleep and eliminate factors that prevent falling asleep to create a healthy circadian rhythm in the life of children.

Introduction: Forestry is one of the most dangerous industries worldwide. Workers handle heavy loads and are exposed to numerous adverse factors of the work environment. This study was focused on analyzing severe and fatal occupational accidents over a long period., Methods: Data were gathered from occupational safety and health databases of the State Forests of the Slovak Republic, which manages 879,113 ha of forests in Slovakia. Between 2007 and 2021, 210 severe and64 fatal accidents were recorded. The data analyses included contingency tables, Pearson χ2 test, and Cramer's V coefficient to analyze the relationships between studied variables., Results: The mean annual number of fatalities was 14, occurring to workers aged 42 on average. Almost 80% of all fatal accidents were suffered by contractors of harvesting operations, who were 5.23 times more likely to suffer a fatality than company employees. On average, 1.28 severe and0.75 fatal accidents occurred per 1 million m 3 of harvested timber. The outcomes of the correlation analysis showed a decreasing trend in incidence in the case of severe accidents. Workers ≤ 30 years or between 51 and 60 years of age were the most vulnerable in the case of fatal accidents. In the case of severe accidents, workers between 51 and 60 were the most vulnerable group. Most fatal accidents were suffered by tree fellers (72.2%) during felling (69.8%), who were in contact with falling trees and tree parts (93.7% share for this material agent). Conclusion and Practical Applications: The presented study identified the most vulnerable worker groups as well as the effects of factors on the occurrence of severe and fatal occupational accidents in forestry. Introduction: To the present day, the prevalence and incidence of cervical cancer remains very significant. For disadvantaged groups such as the Roma, screening for the disease should be given increased attention, as members of this minority have lower access to health care and lower average health literacy., Objective: The aim of our study was to assess the prevalence of cytological screening for cervical cancer among Hungarian-speaking Roma and non-Roma populations in Hungary, Romania and Slovakia, in relation to the possible influencing factors. We also investigated respondents' perceptions of the importance of cervical cancer screening and HPV vaccination. In this paper, we focus on presenting the data from Hungary in relation to the results from the other two countries. The study sample size was 1366., Method: Data were presented as mean ± SD and proportion. To compare Roma and non-Roma samples, the independent samples t-test was used. Cross tabulation with Pearson's chi-square test with calculating phi/Cramér's V effect size (p<0.05) was used to reveal association between ethnicity and studied variables., Results: In Hungary, a higher proportion of Roma women (p = 0.004) did not attend cytological screening for cervical cancer compared to non-Roma women, a difference confirmed in the other two countries. Non-Roma women attached greater importance to attendance at cervical cancer screening (p = 0.022). The Roma population aged 18-65 years had lower rates of annual cytological screening for cervical cancer compared to non-Roma in all age groups, while the annual screening rate decreased with age, regardless of ethnicity., Conclusion: Further health promotion to prevent cervical cancer in the Roma and non-Roma population would be necessary, regardless of national borders, specifically to address risk factors in all age groups, with a focus on young people, who are less aware of the risk, and older age groups, who mostly believe that the disease does not affect them due to their age. Aims: Mepolizumab, a fully-humanized recombinant IgG1 kappa monoclonal antibody directed against IL-5, has shown improved asthma control and lung function in randomised controlled trials. The aim of this study was to evaluate real-world clinical experience in patients with severe eosinophilic asthma treated with mepolizumab in Slovakia., Methods: A retrospective, non-interventional study based on medical records of all adult asthma patients initiating mepolizumab between November 1, 2017 and January 31, 2019, completing 12 months of treatment. At baseline, general and clinical profile data were recorded 12 months prior to treatment. Primary and secondary endpoints described the results of mepolizumab use at 2, 6, and 12 months after the initiation and compared to baseline. Statistical testing of individual change (in each patient) in selected parameters was performed., Results: The cohort included 17 patients with particularly severe asthma at baseline, with frequent severe exacerbations (SE, median 5 [IQR 4-6]/patient/year), high blood eosinophil counts (median 0.6x10 9 /L), frequent oral corticosteroid (OCS) dependence (82.35%), median dose 15 (IQR 7.5-20) mg/day, impaired lung function, and a spectrum of comorbidities. In a one-year follow-up, the data showed reductions in median SE (0 [IQR 0-1] patient/year, eosinophilia (median 0.175x10 9 /L) and OCS maintenance dose (median 6.25 [IQR 2.5-20] mg/day), all statistically significant after 12 months on mepolizumab. Improved and stabilised lung functions throughout the cohort and a reduced incidence of nasal polyposis were observed., Conclusions: The results provide clinical evidence of mepolizumab efficacy in a real sample of patients with severe asthma when administered in routine care settings in Slovakia., Competing Interests: The authors report no conflicts of interest in this work.

Although the narrative of modernity has been rejected by numerous scientists, it remains a powerful paradigm. Several Western countries have, during the COVID-19 pandemic, witnessed renewed interest in some archaic practices and beliefs. Based mostly on media analysis, this paper provides an insight into religious responses to the COVID-19 pandemic in Slovakia and India, two completely different cultural areas. Simultaneously, it challenges the self-identification of the West as the epicentre of rational thought, in contrast to the so-called non-Western world. The self-image of superiority adopted by the modern West in terms of religious relevance has proved to be distorted, as the tendency to turn to spiritual practices in times of crisis is not exclusively a feature of non-Western societies., (© 2023. Perceptions of social norms can have downstream consequences for attitudes and behaviors, especially when it comes to the acceptance of marginalized groups. While interventions focusing on social norms may boost tolerance, few studies test whether variations in norm communication affect individuals' perceptions. Thus, in this paper, we test the effectiveness of three communicative aspects-valence framing (Experiments 1-3), point of view (Experiment 1), and group centrism (Experiment 3)-in shifting perceptions of social norms. Specifically, we investigate whether manipulating these aspects affects perceptions of tolerance of lesbian and gay individuals in Slovakia, where LGBTQ+ acceptance is among the lowest in Europe. We found that while positively valenced messages shifted perceptions toward tolerance, manipulating point of view and group-centrism did not. We believe that these findings can inform interventions intended to shift perceptions of social norms in hostile contexts, an important first step in changing prejudiced attitudes and behaviors.

Aim: Little data is available on pneumococcal serotypes and their antimicrobial resistance in the pneumococcal conjugate vaccination era in young children with acute otitis media (AOM). Here such data is provided from Slovakia, acountry with sequential introduction and parallel-use of the three commercially available pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs; PCV7; PCV13; PCV10)., Methods: This observational study takes advantage of the fact that tympanocentesis is the standard of care in children with AOM in Slovakia. Over the 12 year observation period, participating pediatric ENT specialists sent samples taken during tympanocentesis from children with AOM to their local MEDIRIX laboratories for identification of bacteria. Pneumcoccal isolates were serotyped and tested for antimicrobial resistance. Incidence data could be calculated from 1 region., Results: Study participation and completeness of typing increased over time. Based on testing of 1,131 isolates over 12 years, PCV7-serotypes rapidly waned after PCV7 introduction in 2009 and had virtually disappeared in 2014. The maximum fraction of PCV10-only isolates (1, 5, 7F) was 2.7 % (2009) whereas the additional 3 PCV-serotypes (3, 6A, 19A) in PCV13 represented the largest proportion of pneumococcal AOM cases as of 2010. This finding remained unchanged during the period of highest PCV10-market share (2012-2017) and even until the end of the observation period (2019). The fraction of untypeable pneumococci (<6 %) and non-PCV13-serotypes (16-34 %) increased 2012-2017, but decreased again thereafter. Serotype 19A evolved as the most relevant (multidrug-) resistant pneumococcal serotype, again particularly during the time with high sales of PCV10 (2012-2017). Incidence data from the Bratislava region document a huge impact of PCV use (77 % vaccine uptake: mainly PCV13) on AOM in children < 6 years. Serotypes 19A and 3 remain the only relevant pneumococcal serotypes in young Slovakian children with AOM., Conclusions: As AOM is one of the most common bacterial infections in children < 6 years, the observed benefits of PCVs in reducing vaccine serotypes have been tremendous. With sequential / parallel-use of PCVs, serotypes 3 and (MDR-) 19A today make the largest proportion (about 2/3) of pneumococcal AOM in Slovakia. The European Landscape Convention aims to promote landscape protection, management and planning. This must be done based on identification and knowledge of those basic landscape types that were created by the interaction of human and nature over the course of historical development. This paper presents a methodological approach for creation and evaluation of representative biocultural types of landscape, in order to elaborate an effective strategy for landscape protection, and proposes a management strategy of sustainable use of representative biocultural landscapes of Slovakia. That will ensure the regular maintenance of the landscape in view of current global trends and factors affecting the landscape. Our interdisciplinary approach is based on previous landscape classifications and the interaction of natural and cultural elements. The classification of the biocultural landscape is obtained as a result of multi-criteria analysis in GIS and synthesis of maps of potential vegetation, real ecosystems and current land use, abiotic conditions of representative geoecosystems of Slovakia, and other specific statistical data. We assessed the perception and significance of individual landscape types by way of a questionnaire survey. In Slovakia, seven basic types of landscape were singled out, ranging from natural to semi-natural to anthropogenic, within which other subtypes were specified. We assessed the protection of individual types, as well as threats and degradation of the landscape. The paper presents results of AI diagnostics and treatment across the period of 2004-2020 pointing to the efficacy of two particular protocols., Method: Quantitative determination of amanitins in blood (ATOs) and urine (ATOu) performed by the original ELISA kit, indicated upon mycological history and clinical symptoms of poisoning. ATOu positive cases were recommended our protocol; ATOu negative results excluded amanitin poisoning., Results: out of 2876 fungal poisonings registered in Slovakia during the subjected period, were 698 AI suspected cases. In 557 of them, was AI reliably excluded, in 141 confirmed. Urinary ATOu correlated with the severity of poisoning in the range of 6-47 h after mushroom ingestion, without false negativity. Serum ATOs had no diagnostic value. 129 patients with confirmed AI received full treatment protocol with antidotes of penicillin plus silibinin. In this group died two patients of acute kidney injury in the early stages of poisoning and 127 patients were recovered. Silibinin without penicillin was used in 12 patients. One of them undergone liver transplantation and four patients died of fulminant liver failure, respectively intracranial hemorrhage. Treatment failure in the PNC + silibinin protocol was 1.5 % (2 of 127 patients), silibinin alone being 41.7 % (5 of 12 patients, p = 0.00058)., Conclusion: Early diagnostics of amanitin intoxication based on mycological and clinical history and subsequent determination of urinary amanitin levels (ATOu) allows early initiation of treatment. The use of treatment protocol with antidotes of PNC and silibinin is of high therapeutic efficacy. This paper analyses data by summarising the concentration values of ground-level ozone (GLO). The study area is situated in central Slovakia and is part of the Western Carpathians. These measurements were carried out between 2015 and 2020, implementing Werner's method working with passive samplers. The highest average and the highest absolute GLO deposition values were 30.93 ppb and 61.06 ppb, respectively, recorded in August 2015 in the forest in the Kremnické vrchy Mts. The lowest average GLO value in the whole measuring period was 17.72 ppb, measured in the town of Zvolen; the absolute minimum was 4.43 ppb, recorded in April 2016 on an open plot in the Kremnické vrchy Mts. The GLO formation over the study area has not yet reached a steady rate. Since 2007, the developmental trend has been increasing. Statistically significant differences in GLO concentrations were confirmed between the localities with different airborne pollutions. However, the analysis of the existing ozone concentration values showed considerable differences, especially related to the time pattern. The spatial variability was equalised. The extreme values, while remarkable, were dangerous, especially in the forest stands in the Kremnické vrchy Mts., where they were 14 times above the critical level of 32.5 ppb O 3 . This paper describes the results of the characterization of a traditional Slovak cheese called "May bryndza" with regard to the profiles of volatile organic compounds and lactic acid bacteria. Samples of "May bryndza" cheese produced solely from unpasteurized ewe's milk were collected from 4 different Slovak farms, and samples of the cheese produced from a mixture of 2 types of milk (raw ewe's and pasteurized cow's milk) were collected from 3 different Slovak industrial dairies. There were 15 compounds detected and identified by the electronic nose. The impact of the kind of milk and the kind of dairy on the aroma profile of the product was not confirmed by PCA. The compounds with the highest relative contents in samples were acetoin (2.59%-24.55%), acetic acid (6.69%-13.39%), methoxy-phenyl-oxime (4.49%-8.52%), butanoic acid (1.89%-5.67%), and 2,3-butanediol (0.98%-4.08%), which were determined with gas chromatography. A total of 1533 isolates of LAB were obtained from the "May bryndza" cheese samples. Four families, five genera, and 19 species were identified with mass spectrometry, and isolated bacteria, both from the farm and industry dairies were the most frequently found to belong to Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis .

Despite the unbounded and undeniable advantages of manufacturing, affiliated negative externalities, such as environmental pollution, cannot be overlooked. Our article aims to focus on the current interdependence between the selected economic and environmental aspects in related manufacturing enterprises in Slovakia. We focused on analysing the relationship between carbon monoxide emissions from the largest polluters of the Slovak Republic and relevant sales. The data were taken from 83 enterprises from the Slovak Republic. Environmental and economic data were comprehensive during 2014-2019; therefore, this paper focuses on this period. Among the substantial results, we identified that carbon monoxide production from Slovak production companies was almost unchanged from 2014 to 2019, with only minimal deviations. Based on the results, we created an environmental ratio indicator as an appropriate tool for managers for their decision-making process to achieve the enterprise's sustainability goals.

Nowadays, rapid growths of urban areas and associated land use/land cover (LULC) changes notably affect the surface runoff response to rainfall in urbanised catchments. This effect of urbanisation on surface runoff is frequently addressed since it relates to the increasing incidence of pluvial floods worldwide. Studies on this issue commonly assess runoff changes over several most recent decades. However, human-induced factors likely resulted in increased surface runoff and associated flash floods in rural catchments even in the past centuries. Such long-term changes have been rarely studied and thus are not well documented. This paper aims to fill this gap and assess the surface runoff response to LULC changes in a small catchment in southwestern Slovakia over more than two centuries. To meet this goal, we applied the Soil Conservation Service Curve Number (SCS-CN) method. We mapped past (1784) and present (2018) LULC classes based on historical maps and modern remote sensing data. Then, we estimated surface runoff depths for specific design rainstorms for both periods by executing CN method equations in the ArcGIS environment. Results revealed significant changes in surface runoff conditions between evaluated periods. In total, surface runoff magnitudes increased by ~230 and ~ 130% for 40- and 65-mm design rainstorms, respectively, compared to 1784. Moreover, surface runoff values show different spatial patterns on historical and present-day output raster images revealing spatial redistribution of runoff-enhancing and runoff-preventing areas during the evaluated period. Although both infiltration-enhancing and runoff-enhancing effects of LULC changes were identified, the latter effect associated with urbanised lowland areas was recognised as prevailing at present. In contrast, runoff-promoting conditions were associated with hilly vineyard areas in the past. A key factor for business management is the assessment of the financial situation of companies. Nowadays, it is essential to monitor the liquidity crisis, which is closely linked to corporate crises. The aim of the paper is to analyse a selected sector of the economy from the perspective of the corporate crisis and to identify the factors of crisis. More than 2000 engineering companies in Slovakia were analysed during the period from 2015 to 2019 with the aim of analysing financial results, especially in the area of financial forecast for the future. In the analysis, statistical testing of the significance of relationships using the Spearman correlation coefficient, the significance of differences by the power of t-test, regression and clustering were used. A significant part of the paper is the analysis of selected indicators of the company's crisis-Altman's Z score and the IN05 index. The results indicate that engineering companies in Slovakia are achieving good results and their financial situation is improving within the years between 2015-2019. The results can also be used as a starting point for research concerning the impact of COVID-19 in this area. In the context of corporate crisis management, engineering companies behave in the same way but it is necessary to monitor individual factors that can detect a corporate crisis. Background and Objectives: Nowadays colorectal carcinoma (CRC) is one of the most common causes of death in patients with malignant neoplasms worldwide. Our work aimed to determine the possible involvement of glutathione peroxidases 4 and 8 (GPx4 and GPx8) in this specific tumor process. Materials and Methods : The expression of GPx4 and GPx8 in 58 specimens of human colorectal cancer tissues and normal tissues was detected by the indirect immunohistochemical method under a light microscope. Statistical analysis was done by Chi-squared test. Histological findings were compared with data such as gender, age, tumor grade, histotype and lymph nodes alteration. Results: In all specimens of healthy tissue the presence of both, GPx4 and GPx8, was detected in the cytoplasm of epithelial cells. On the other hand, a positive immunohistochemical reaction against GPx4 only in 41.4% and against GPx8 only in 29.3% of human colorectal adenocarcinoma specimens were observed. Any significant difference between the presence of GPx and the age, the gender of the patient, tumor grade, histotype of cancer and the lesion of regional lymph nodes has not been detected. Conclusions : Our foundation could mean, that GPx4 and GPx8 have no important role in CRC pathogenesis, but the loss of these enzymes probably indicates a serious pathological process ongoing in the large intestine. To our knowledge, this is the first paper describing GPx8 presence in human colorectal carcinoma.

This checklist includes taxa of chewing lice from published records, old collections, and recently collected material from birds and mammals in Slovakia. Data from established collections correspond to five different periods: (1) 19251939, collection of Karel Pfleger; (2) 19461978, collection of Frantiek Balt; (3) 19741985, collection of Vladimr Straka; (4) 19972012, collection of J Kritofk; and (5) 20082019, a collection made by the authors of this paper. A total of 255 species of feather lice67 amblyceran species in 22 genera of families Laemobothriidae, Menoponidae and Ricinidae, and 188 ischnoceran species in 54 genera of the family Philopteridaeand 366 host-louse associations are listed from 171 bird species in 21 orders. In addition, eight species of chewing lice in five genera of the family Trichodectidae are listed from eight species of mammals. Species of chewing lice are reported from about 240 different locations throughout the territory of Slovakia. Also, 43 species of lice and 20 host-louse associations for Slovakia, as well as four host-louse associations for the world, are included as new records. A host-louse list of recorded species is also given.

Many studies report organic carbon stabilization by clay minerals, but the effects of land use and soil type on the properties of humic acids (HAs) are missing. The aim of the paper is to determine the effects of land use and soil types on the characteristics of HAs, which have a considerable influence on organic matter quality. It was hypothesised that the effect of the land use on HAs properties depends on the particular size distribution. The research was performed in three ecosystems: agricultural, forest, and meadow, located in Slovakia. From each of them, the samples of 4 soil types were taken: Chernozem, Luvisol, Planosol, and Cambisol. The soil samples were assayed for the content of total organic carbon (TOC) and the particle size distribution. HAs were extracted with the Schnitzer method and analysed for the elemental composition, spectrometric parameters in the UV-VIS range, and hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties, and the infrared spectra were produced. The research results have shown that the properties of HAs can be modified by the land use and the scope and that the direction of changes depends on the soil type. The HAs of Chernozem and Luvisol in the agri-ecosystem were identified with a higher "degree of maturity", as reflected by atomic ratios (H/C, O/C, O/H), absorbance coefficients, and the FT-IR spectra, as compared with the HAs of the meadow and forest ecosystem. However, as for the HAs of Cambisol, a higher "degree of maturity" was demonstrated for the meadow ecosystem, as compared with the HAs of the agri- and forest ecosystem. Particulate matter (PM) air pollution in the urban environment is mainly related to the presence of potential sources throughout the year. Road transport is one of the most important sources of PM in the urban environment, because it directly affects pedestrians. PM measurements were performed in the city of Žilina, Slovakia, at various road-traffic-related measurement stations over the course of several years. This paper evaluates changes in the concentration of the fine fraction (PM 2.5 ), the ultrafine fraction (PM 1 ), and the coarse fraction (PM 2.5-10 ) over time. PM concentrations were measured by reference gravimetric method. Significant changes in PM concentrations over time due to the diversification of pollution sources and other, secondary factors can be observed from the analysis of the measured data. PM samples were subjected to chemical analysis inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to determine the concentrations of elements (Mg, Al, Ca, Cr, Cu, Fe, Cd, Sb, Ba, Pb, Ni, and Zn). The seasonal variation of elements was evaluated, and the sources of PM 2.5 , PM 1 , and PM 2.5-10 were estimated using principal component analysis (PCA) and positive matrix factorization (PMF). PM 2.5 (maximum concentration of 148.95 µg/m 3 over 24 h) and PM 1 (maximum concentration of 110.51 µg/m 3 over 24 h) showed the highest concentrations during the heating season, together with the elements Cd, Pb, and Zn, which showed a significant presence in these fractions. On the other hand, PM 2.5-10 (maximum concentration of 38.17 µg/m 3 over 24 h) was significantly related to the elements Cu, Sb, Ba, Ca, Cr, Fe, Mg, and Al. High correlation coefficients (r ≥ 0.8) were found for the elements Mg, Ca, Fe, Al, Cd, Pb, and Zn in the PM 1 fraction, Cd, Pb, and Zn in PM 2.5 , and Ba, Sb, Fe, Cu, Cr, Mg, Al, and Ca in PM 2.5-10 . Using PMF analysis, three major sources of PM (abrasion from tires and brakes, road dust resuspension/winter salting, and combustion processes) were identified for the PM 2.5 and PM 1 fractions, as well as for the coarse PM 2.5-10 fraction. This study reveals the importance of non-exhaust PM emissions in the urban environment.

The coronavirus became a phenomenon in 2020, which is making an unwanted but wide space for the study of various scientific disciplines. The COVID-19 pandemic situation which has reached almost the whole civilized world by its consequences thus offers a unique possibility to analyze the graphic space and the human activities inside it. The aim of this study is to predict and identify the potential rate of threat on the example of COVID-19 in Slovakia through an established model. This model consisted of an assessment of the partial phenomena of exposure, vulnerability, and overall risk. The statistical data used to evaluate these phenomena concerned individual cities in Slovakia. These represent the smallest administrative unit. Indirect methods based on the point method were applied in the paper. The spreading and transfer of the disease was influenced much more by the exposure presented by traffic availability, especially, but also the concentration of inhabitants in the selected locations (shops, cemeteries, and others). In the results, our modeling confirmed the regions with the highest intensity, especially in the districts (Bratislava, Košice, Prešov, and Nitra). The selection of the data and method used in this study together with the results reached and presented may serve as an appropriate tool for the support of decision-making of other measures for the future.

Indoor dust is an important exposure route to anthropogenic chemicals used in consumer products. Plasticizers are common product additives and can easily leach out of the product and partition to dust. Investigations of plasticizers typically focus on a subset of phthalate esters (PEs), but there are many more PEs in use, and alternative plasticizers (APs) are seeing greater use after recognition of adverse health effects of PEs. In this study we use full scan high resolution mass spectrometry for targeted and suspect screening of PEs and APs in house dust and to assess the potential risk of human exposure. House dust samples from Eastern Slovakia were investigated and concentrations of ∑ 12 PEs and ∑ 5 APs ranged 12-2765 μg/g and 45-13,260 μg/g, respectively. APs were at similar levels to PEs, indicating common usage of these compounds in products in homes. Evaluation of individual compound toxicity combined with human intake via dust ingestion suggested PEs are of lower priority compared to semivolatile organic compounds such as polychlorinated biphenyls due to their lower toxicity. However, cumulative risk assessment (CRA) is a more appropriate evaluation of risk, considering the presences of many PEs in dust and their similar toxic mode of action. CRA based on median toxicity reference values (TRVs) suggested acceptable risks for dust ingestion, however, the wide range of literature-derived TRVs is a large uncertainty, especially for the APs. Use of newer TRVs suggest risk from dust ingestion alone, i.e. not even considering diet, inhalation, and dermal contact. Tokaj wines could be produced only in so called Tokaj/Tokay wine region that falls within two countries Slovakia and Hungary. Thus, wines bearing Tokaj appellation must be produced only in Hungary and Slovakia by traditional process. Unfortunately, some counterfeit wines from neighbour region in Ukraine could be found in market. The aim of this work is to explore a simple UV-VIS spectrum to recognise true Tokaj/Tokay wines from counterfeits and try to differentiate wines based on their country of origin. This type of question can be duly answered using one class classification approach. Two different approaches, Data Driven Soft Independent Modelling of Class Analogy - DD-SIMCA and One-Class Partial Least Squares - OC-PLS were tested and evaluated for this purpose. In both cases, rigorous way models were built and optimized using only samples of the target class. A set of external samples containing samples from target class and non-target were used to validate the models ability to recognize Slovak samples and reject non-Slovak samples. Model based on DD-SIMCA showed better performance (97% correct rating) compared to OC-PLS models (80% correct rating). Comparing both approaches in terms of sensitivity and specificity, both exhibit high sensitivity (low false negative rate: DD-SIMCA 95% and OC-PLS 100%), however the OC-PLS based model showed low specificity (40%) while DD-SIMCA showed high specificity (100%) rejecting all samples out of Slovak origin. Therefore, the results found in this study show that it is possible to successfully combine UV-VIS spectra and DD-SIMCA models to discriminate Tokaj wine samples of Slovak origin from others. Background: The paper aims to analyze the impact of key labor market indicators on the self-assessed health of the population of older workers (aged 55-64). Methods: Authors build the econometric models where the dependent variable is the self-perceived health status (for women and men separately). Explanatory variables are selected key indicators of the labor market, covering unemployment, including long-term, inactivity, or under-employment. The average household income is used to control the effect of wealth. Additionally, the models incorporate the variable describing the proximity of retirement. The research sample consists of nine countries of Central and Eastern Europe: Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Bulgaria, and Romania. Background: Postpartum depression has a negative impact on quality of life. The aim of this study was to examine the factor structure and psychometric properties of the Slovak version of the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS)., Methods: A paper and pencil version of the 10-item EPDS questionnaire was administered personally to 577 women at baseline during their stay in hospital on the second to fourth day postpartum (age, 30.6 ± 4.9 years; 73.5% vaginal births vs. 26.5% operative births; 59.4% primiparas). A total of 198 women participated in the online follow-up 6-8 weeks postpartum (questionnaire sent via e-mail)., Results: The Slovak version of the EPDS had Cronbach's coefficients of 0.84 and 0.88 at baseline (T1) and follow-up, respectively. The three-dimensional model of the scale offered good fit for both the baseline (χ 2 (df = 28) = 1339.38, p < 0.001; CFI = 0.99, RMSEA = 0.02, and TLI = 0.99) and follow-up (χ 2 (df = 45) = 908.06, p < 0.001, CFI = 0.93, RMSEA = 0.09, and TL = 0.90). A risk of major depression (EPDS score ≥ 13) was identified in 6.1% in T1 and 11.6% in the follow-up. Elevated levels of depression symptoms (EPDS score ≥ 10) were identified in 16.7% and 22.7% of the respondents at baseline and follow-up, respectively., Conclusions: The Slovak translation of the EPDS showed good consistency, convergent validity, and model characteristics. The routine use of EPDS can contribute to improving the quality of postnatal health care.

This article explores how multiple health risks in municipalities with Roma settlements in Slovakia are related to the varieties of local governance and the authorities' conduct towards the local Roma population. The first part of the paper describes the situation in Roma settlements from the perspective of unequal access to sewerage and water pipelines. Introduced here are data on identified contagious diseases that correlated multiple health risks with the lack of sanitation and/or water infrastructure. The second section of the paper put forth typologies of government approaches towards the Roma, which based on ethnographic fieldwork, allows us to identify factors of attitudinal, structural and policy-oriented nature. Research results point to a "triad" of key circumstances: these are the structural conditions in municipalities and the history of local inter-ethnic relations and attitude of authorities towards Roma. Finally, possible solutions and approaches regarding how to mitigate the multiple health risks are discussed. It is suggested that on the one hand, in many villages there is a profound institutional discrimination of Roma with respect to water and sanitation infrastructure; on the other hand, water services are increasingly becoming an expensive commodity that not everyone can afford. The article concludes with discussion on enabling conditions and ways to ensure access to basic infrastructure in rural Roma communities. The solution is not only a compliance with principles of non-discrimination and existing technical norms and standards but also in securing the accessible funding for construction of the sanitation infrastructure in a smart way, including innovations and operation of cheaper and environmentally responsible sanitation technologies.

The paper presents the results of the evaluation of the selected active labour market policy measure "Contribution to the Graduate practice" in Slovakia. The measure is of a voluntary nature and its main aim is to prevent long-term unemployment among young people and to support a competitive ability of young school-leavers and thus their employability and sustainability in the labour market through the acquisition of work experience, professional skills and work habits. In the study, we analyse the selected characteristics of young jobseekers who participated in this measure in 2016 and their counterfactuals who did not participate. In addition to 2016, the observed period includes a subsequent 2 years - the individual impact period of the measure for each participant, i.e. the years 2017 and 2018. We evaluated the effects of the measure by applying the exact matching of treated and non-treated individuals using the outcome variables, namely wages and placement in the labour market in the impact period of the measure. The results indicate that the Graduate practice had a positive impact on the employability and sustainability of its participants, but rather in short-term or maximum long-term. Regarding the wage levels referring to the financial appraisal of the participants of the measure, the results suggest that non-treated individuals were better financially evaluated and so the Graduate practice did not guarantee better salary to its participants. The findings of the study are important in the setting of conditions of the measure for future periods in order to achieve its better functioning and efficiency in the way of proper targeting, more efficient use of funds, and for a system of their redistribution., (Copyright © 2021 The Authors.
