Wood, as a renewable material, has been regarded as an emerging substrate for self-supporting electrodes in large-scale water electrolysis due to numerous merits such as rich pore structure, abundant hydroxyl groups, etc. However, poor conductivity of wood can greatly suppress the performance of wood-based electrodes. Carbonization process can improve wood's conductivity, but the loss of hydroxyl groups and the required high energy consumption are the drawbacks of such a process. Here, a facile strategy is developed to prepare pristine wood-supported electrode (Ni-NiP/W) for enhanced hydrogen evolution reaction (HER); this improves electrical conductivity of wood while retaining its excellent intrinsic properties. The preparation process involves the deposition of copper on the untreated wood followed with the loading of Ni-NiP catalyst at room temperature. Encouragingly, the Ni-NiP/W exhibits conductive and inherited pristine wood's superhydrophilic and superaerophobic properties, that effectively boost mass and charge transfer. It demonstrates high activity and excellent stability in acidic, alkali, and seawater conditions as well as high current densities of up to 2000 mA cm -2 ; particularly a record-low HER overpotential of 206 mV in acidic conditions at 1000 mA cm -2 . Modeling the dynamic properties of wood and wood-based composites is a challenging task due to naturally growing structure and moisture-dependent material properties. This paper presents the finite element modeling of plywood panels' dynamic properties. Two panels differing in thickness were analyzed: (i) 18 mm and (ii) 27 mm. The developed models consisted of individual layers of wood, which were discretized using three-dimensional finite elements formulated using an orthotropic material model. The models were subjected to an updating procedure based on experimentally determined frequency response functions. As a result of a model updating relative errors for natural frequencies obtained numerically and experimentally were not exceeding 2.0%, on average 0.7% for 18 mm thick panel and not exceeding 2.6%, on average 1.5% for 27 mm thick panel. To prove the utility of the method and at the same time to validate it, a model of a cabinet was built, which was then subjected to experimental verification. In this case, average relative differences for natural frequencies of 6.6% were obtained.

Moisture-induced electricity generation (MEG), which can directly harvest electricity from moisture, is considered as an effective strategy for alleviating the growing energy crisis. Recently, tremendous efforts have been devoted to developing MEG active materials from wood lignocellulose (WLC) due to its excellent properties including environmental friendliness, sustainability, and biodegradability. This review comprehensively summarizes the recent advances in MEG based on WLC (wood, cellulose, lignin, and woody biochar), covering its principles, preparation, performances, and applications. In detail, the basic working mechanisms of MEG are discussed, and the natural features of WLC and their significant advantages in the fabrication of MEG active materials are emphasized. Furthermore, the recent advances in WLC-based MEG for harvesting electrical energy from moisture are specifically discussed, together with their potential applications (sensors and power sources). Although many of the structures and organelles of vegetative cells are comparable to those of animal tissues, significant differences between the two kingdoms require modifications in histological techniques for both tissue processing steps and histochemical staining techniques. The authors investigated the challenges of working with plant tissues by collecting various flora to represent the four main plant organs: leaf, stem, root, and flower/fruit. Triplicate samples for each specimen were placed into formalin for paraffin embedding, placed into formalin for later frozen sections, and used fresh to undergo immediate frozen sectioning. Frozen sections of plant tissues were more difficult to obtain than formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) sections, exhibited tissue loss during staining, and were inferior morphologically to FFPE sections. Although, historically, plant tissue fixation and processing has employed several different reagents compared with those used in animal tissue processing and took significantly longer times, the current investigation determined reagents and protocols from a modern histology laboratory which processes mammalian tissues can be applied to plant tissue processing with only slight modifications in respect to reagent timing. Additionally, staining techniques were compared and while it is well known that plant cell walls stain well with safranin O, the current investigation determined the uptake of safranin O can be accelerated by incubating at 60°C.

Wood materials incorporating new properties are of great interest, especially for advanced applications such as sustainable optics and photonics. In this work we describe a wood functionalization approach, comprising the incorporation of artificial chemiluminescent systems (phenyl oxalate ester‑hydrogen peroxide-fluorophore, and luminol-ferricyanide), resulting in light-emitting wood. By a detailed characterisation of the light emission features we point out the complex interaction between wood scaffold and chemiluminescent systems, especially the quenching effect of wood extractives (for the TCPO-H 2 O 2 -fluorophore system) and lignin (for the luminol-ferricyanide system). Moreover, we take advantage of the intrinsic anisotropic porosity and capillarity of wood tissue to study the chemiluminescent front propagation. Excessive amounts of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) can lead to eutrophication in water sources. Woodchip bioreactors have shown success in removing N from agricultural runoff, but less is known regarding P removal. Woodchip bioreactors are subsurface basins filled with woodchips installed downgradient of agricultural land to collect and treat drainage runoff. Microorganisms use the woodchips as a carbon (C) source to transform N in the runoff, with unresolved biological impacts on P. This study aims to explore microbial communities present in the bioreactor and determine whether milling woodchips to probe the microbial communities within them reveals hidden microbial diversities or potential activities. Metagenomic sequencing and bioinformatic analyses were performed on six woodchip samples (i.e., three unmilled and three milled) collected from a 10-year-old woodchip bioreactor treating agricultural tile drainage. All samples had similar DNA purity, yield, quality, and microbial diversity regardless of milling. However, when sequences were aligned against various protein libraries, our results indicated greater relative abundance of denitrification and P transformation proteins on the outside of the woodchips (unmilled), while the interior of woodchips (milled) exhibited more functional gene abundance for carbohydrate breakdown. Thus, it may be important to characterize microbial communities both within woodchips, and on woodchip surfaces, to gain a more holistic understanding of coupled biogeochemical cycles on N, P, and C in woodchip bioreactors. Based on these findings, we advise that future microbial research on woodchips (and potentially other permeable organic materials) examine both the surface biofilm and the interior organic material during initial studies. In this study, the family GH10 xylanase AnXylA10 derived from Aspergillus niger JL15 strain was expressed in Pichia pastoris X33. The recombinant xylanase, reAnXylA10 exhibited optimal activity at 40 ℃ and pH 5.0. The hydrolysates generated from beechwood xylan using reAnXylA10 primarily consisted of xylobiose (X2) to xylohexaose (X6) and demonstrated remarkable antioxidant capacity. Furthermore, the rice xylanase inhibitory protein (riceXIP) was observed to competitively inhibit reAnXylA10, exhibiting an inhibition constant (K i ) of 140.6 nM. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of AnXylA10-riceXIP complex revealed that the α-7 helix (Q225-S238) of riceXIP intruded into the catalytic pocket of AnXylA10, thereby obstructing substrate access to the active site. Specifically, residue K226 of riceXIP formed robust interactions with E136 and E242, the two catalytic sites of AnXylA10, predominantly through high-occupied hydrogen bonds. Based on QTAIM, electron densities for the atom pairs K226 riceXIP @HZ1-E136 AnXylA10 @OE2 and K226 riceXIP @HZ3-E242 AnXylA10 @OE1 were determined to be 0.04628 and 0.02914 a.u., respectively. Binding free energy of AnXylA10-riceXIP complex was -59.0±7.6 kcal/mol, significantly driven by electrostatic and van der Waals forces. In Ulaanbaatar roughly 60 % of the population live in traditional Mongolian yurts in the so-called Ger districts of the city. Winter indoor air quality is a serious concern in these districts as about 98 % of households consume solid fossil fuel (mainly coal). In our study, indoor air quality was assessed based on PAHs analysis and ecotoxicity testing of 24-hour samples collected in 4 yurts. Three of the selected yurts were equipped with conventional while the fourth one with improved stoves. Analysis of PAHs profiles showed the prevalence of higher molecular weight PAHs in all yurts. Concentrations of the 5-ring benzo(b)fluoranthene and 6-ring benzo(g.h.i)perylene were extremely high in one yurt using conventional stove, 8430 µg g -1 and 6320 µg g -1 , respectively. Ecotoxicity of the samples was assessed using the kinetic version of the Vibrio fischeri bioluminescence inhibition bioassay. Sustainable and environment friendly natural-based adhesive has been considered as an optimum alternative of industrial adhesive which is non-renewable and harmful to health. Cellulose is the most abundant natural polymer in nature and has potential applications in the field of adhesives. However, the inherent hydrophilic nature of cellulose-based adhesive significantly challenges its use in high humidity environments. In this paper, a highly hydrophobic and anti-swelling cellulose-based adhesive was prepared by epoxy modification of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC). The simultaneous enhancement of adhesive and cohesive properties is achieved through the reaction of epoxy groups with the hydroxyl groups from the wood and adhesive during the hot-pressing process. Prepared adhesive has excellent properties in extremely humid environments. The dry bonding strength of the prepared adhesive reached 6.02 ± 0.26 MPa, while the wet bonding strength was 4.78 ± 0.21 MPa after immersed in water at 63 °C for 3 h. Furthermore, the bonding strength remained largely stable in 90 % atmospheric humidity. The adhesive has a certain universality, which can bond to substrates such as aluminium, iron, and glass. Objective: To investigate the association between biomass exposure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in a representative sample of adults from the Moroccan population METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Fez as part of the Burden of Obstructive Lung Disease (BOLD) study, which included apparently healthy subjects aged 40 years and above. Biomass exposure was defined as self-report use of various biomass types for heating or cooking. The Wood Heating Exposure Index, and the Cooking Biomass Exposure Index were used to assess biomass exposure. Participants underwent post-bronchodilator spirometry and COPD was defined as having a forced expiratory volume in 1 s/forced vital capacity ratio <0.7. Descriptive, univariate and multivariable statistical analyses adjusting for potential confounders including age, sex, smoking, education level, Mokken scale (wealth index) and occupational dust exposure were performed for the general population and separately for men and women., Results: A total of 760 subjects were included, comprising 350 men and 410 women. In the multivariable analyses, we found a statistically significant association between a higher Wood Heating Exposure Index and COPD in men (adjusted OR=3.8; 95% CI: 1.4 to 10.4). Background: The interplay between different uses of woody plants remains underexplored, obscuring our understanding of how a plant's value for one purpose might shield it from other, more harmful uses. This study examines the protection hypothesis by determining if food uses can protect woody plants (trees and shrubs) from wood uses. We approached the hypothesis from two distinct possibilities: (1) the protective effect is proportional to the intensity of a species' use for food purposes, and (2) the protective effect only targets key species for food purposes., Methods: The research was conducted in a rural community within "Restinga" vegetation in Northeast Brazil. To identify important food species for both consumption and income (key species) and the collection areas where they naturally occur, we conducted participatory workshops. We then carried out a floristic survey in these areas to identify woody species that coexist with the key species. Voucher specimens were used to create a field herbarium, which, along with photographs served as visual stimuli during the checklist interviews. The interviewees used a five-point Likert scale to evaluate the species in terms of perceived wood quality, perceived availability, and use for food and wood purposes. To test our hypothesis, we used Cumulative Link Mixed Models (CLMMs), with the wood use as the response variable, food use, perceived availability and perceived quality as the explanatory variables and the interviewee as a random effect. We performed the same model replacing food use for key species food use (a binary variable that had value 1 when the information concerned a key species with actual food use, and value 0 when the information did not concern a key species or concerned a key species that was not used for food purposes)., Results: Consistent with our hypothesis, we identified a protective effect of food use on wood use. However, this effect is not directly proportional to the species' food use, but is confined to plants with considerable domestic food importance. Wood, as a natural biomass material, has long been a research focus. Superhydrophobic modified wood, in particular, has shown great promise in a myriad of engineering applications such as architecture, landscape, and shipbuilding. However, commercial development has encountered significant resistance due to preparation difficulties and sometimes unsatisfactory performance. In this study, hydrophobic/superhydrophobic wood comodified with methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) and 1 H ,1 H ,2 H ,2 H -perfluorodecyltrimethoxysilane (PFDTMS) was fabricated by a one-step sol-gel method that uses an in situ growth process. Low-molecular-weight MTMS was allowed to permeate the three-dimensional porous wood interior. Then, acid-base catalysts were used to regulate the hydrolytic condensation process of MTMS and PFDTMS composite silanes to generate micro/nano hierarchical structures with low surface energy on the wood surface. The physicochemical characteristics of modified wood were investigated and the reaction mechanism established. The modified wood displayed excellent internal hydrophobicity/surface superhydrophobicity, water-moisture resistance, and dimensional stability at low fluorine concentrations. The resulting superhydrophobic surface provided stain resistance, self-cleaning ability, and loading capacity in water while exhibiting good mechanochemical stability; wood mechanical strength was also enhanced. This methodology created a superhydrophobic surface and bulk hydrophobization of wood in one step. Beyond wood, this approach is expected to provide a promising approach for functional modification of other porous composite materials.

The wood preservative disodium octaborate tetrahydrate (DOT) migration is studied in clay. Using boron analysis by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES), DOT spatial and temporal dynamics are surveyed to show how DOT permeates into the wood and the clay using concentration profiles as a function of depth, initial wood moisture, and direction of filling. Atomic force microscopy and chemical imaging using photoinduced force microscopy are used to show the morphology of the wood samples and the distribution of DOT on their surface. ICP-OES results show that the average DOT concentration in the wood samples is originally 0.8 and 1.5 wt% in the bulk and at the surface, respectively. Conditioning of the wood to a moisture content of 19% in a climatic chamber reduces DOT concentration by 8% for the fir and 17% for the spruce. After one week of contact with the clays, the results showed a rapid decrease of 25-40% in DOT concentration in wood. On longer periods (5 months), the spruce shows a tendency to reabsorb the DOT from the clay and the DOT migration stabilizes at 20%. Purpose: Wood comprises different cell types, such as fibers, tracheids and vessels, defining its properties. Studying cells' shape, size, and arrangement in microscopy images is crucial for understanding wood characteristics. Typically, this involves macerating (soaking) samples in a solution to separate cells, then spreading them on slides for imaging with a microscope that covers a wide area, capturing thousands of cells. However, these cells often cluster and overlap in images, making the segmentation difficult and time-consuming using standard image-processing methods., Results: In this work, we developed an automatic deep learning segmentation approach that utilizes the one-stage YOLOv8 model for fast and accurate segmentation and characterization of macerated fiber and vessel form aspen trees in microscopy images. The model can analyze 32,640 x 25,920 pixels images and demonstrate effective cell detection and segmentation, achieving a mAP 0.5 - 0.95 of 78 %. To assess the model's robustness, we examined fibers from a genetically modified tree line known for longer fibers. The outcomes were comparable to previous manual measurements. Additionally, we created a user-friendly web application for image analysis and provided the code for use on Google Colab., Conclusion: By leveraging YOLOv8's advances, this work provides a deep learning solution to enable efficient quantification and analysis of wood cells suitable for practical applications., (© 2024. Background: The woods of trees of the genus Dalbergia are a frequent cause of allergic contact dermatitis., Objectives: To describe the different patterns of symptoms and sensitisation to woods of the genus Dalbergia in four patients whose regular work is linked to music, either as performers (two patients) or instrument makers., Results: The patients showed extensive cross-reactivity between the different Dalbergia woods. The two musicians exhibited symptoms exclusively in the contact areas, while the instrument makers showed a pattern of airborne symptoms. The period from sensitisation to the development of symptoms varied greatly among the patients., Conclusions: The symptoms of allergic contact dermatitis to Dalbergia woods differ markedly depending on the route of contact. Cross-reactivity between the woods of this genus is very wide. The coordinated interspecific variation in leaf traits and leaf lifespan is known as the leaf economic spectrum (LES). The limitation of CO 2 diffusion to chloroplasts within the lamina is significant in C 3 photosynthesis, resulting in a shortage of CO 2 for Rubisco. Although Rubisco CO 2 /O 2 specificity (S C/O ) should be adaptively adjusted in response to the interspecific variation in CO 2 concentrations [CO 2 ] associated with Rubisco, S C/O variations across species along the LES remain unknown. We investigated the coordination among leaf traits, including S C/O , CO 2 conductance, leaf protein content, and leaf mass area, across 23 woody C 3 species coexisting on an oceanic island through phylogenetic correlation analyses. A high S C/O indicates a high CO 2 specificity of Rubisco. S C/O was negatively correlated with [CO 2 ] at Rubisco and total CO 2 conductance within lamina, while it was positively correlated with leaf protein across species, regardless of phylogenetic constraint. A simulation analysis shows that the optimal S C/O for maximizing photosynthesis depends on both [CO 2 ] at Rubisco sites and leaf protein per unit leaf area. Rarely do we observe competitive exclusion within plant communities, even though plants compete for a limited pool of resources. Thus, our understanding of the mechanisms sustaining plant biodiversity might be limited. In this study, we explore two common ecological strategies, species sorting and character displacement, that promote coexistence by reducing competition. We assess the degree to which woody plants may implement these two strategies to lower belowground competition for nutrients which occurs via nutritional (mostly mycorrhizal) mutualisms. First, we compile data on plant traits and the mycorrhizal association state of woody angiosperms using a global inventory of indigenous flora. Our analysis reveals that species in locations with high mycorrhizal diversity exhibit distinct mean values in leaf area and wood density based on their mycorrhizal type, indicating species sorting. Second, we reanalyse a large dataset on leaf area to demonstrate that in areas with high mycorrhizal diversity, trees maintain divergent leaf area values, showcasing character displacement. Character displacement among plants is considered rare, making our observation significant. Increasing shortages and costs of common bedding materials have led dairy farmers in Sweden to consider using recycled manure solids (RMS), which are readily available and low cost, as an alternative bedding material. The main risks are effects on udder health and milk quality, but RMS could also affect animal welfare and claw health. The advantages and disadvantages of using RMS bedding have not been fully investigated, and findings in other countries cannot be directly applied to Swedish conditions and climate. This observational cross-sectional study investigated the use of RMS as bedding, regarding associations with certain aspects of animal welfare, herd health, milk quality, and bedding costs in Swedish dairy herds. Thirty-four dairy farms using RMS or wood shavings/sawdust (each n = 17) were compared. Each farm was visited 2 times during the housing period from 2020 to 2021, once from October to December and once from March to May. Dairy barns were observed, animal welfare was assessed, and freestall dimensions were measured. Farm owners were interviewed about housing system characteristics, herd performance, and herd management. Data on milk production and herd health were obtained from the Swedish official milk recording scheme for the indoor period from October to March. The prevalence of claw disorders and abnormal claw conformation were collected from the national claw health database for the period from October to May. On each farm visit, composite samples of unused bedding outside the barn and used bedding material from the freestalls, respectively, were taken for total bacterial count and DM analysis. Samples of bulk tank milk for determination of total bacterial count were taken in connection to the visits. In addition, samples of unused and used bedding material and manure from alleys for analysis of 3 Treponema species associated with digital dermatitis (DD) were gathered and analyzed. Total bacterial count was significantly higher in unused (8.50 log 10 cfu/g) and used RMS bedding (9.75 log 10 cfu/g) than in wood shavings/sawdust (used 4.74; unused 8.63 log 10 cfu/g), but there were no significant differences in bulk milk total bacterial count (median 4.07 vs. 3.89 log 10 cfu/mL) or SCC (median 243,800 vs. 229,200 cells/mL). The aspects of animal welfare assessed did not differ significantly between the 2 bedding systems, whereas the prevalence of total claw disorders (25.9% vs. 38.0% of trimmed cows), dermatitis (6.9% vs. 16.2% of trimmed cows) and sole ulcers (2.0% vs. 4.0% of trimmed cows) were significantly lower in the RMS herds. Treponema spp. were not detected in unused RMS material, but all RMS herds had presence of DD recorded at foot trimming. An economic assessment based on the interview results and price level from winter 2021 revealed that the costs of RMS bedding varied with amount of RMS produced. Thus, RMS is a potential alternative bedding material for dairy cows in Sweden and can be a profitable option for large dairy herds. During gestation, maternal blood flow to the umbilical cord and placenta increases, facilitating efficient nutrient absorption, waste elimination, and effective gas exchange for the developing fetus. However, the effects of exposure to wood smoke during this period on these processes are unknown. We hypothesize that exposure to PM2.5, primarily sourced from wood combustion for home heating, affects placental vascular morphophysiology and fetal size. We used exposure chambers that received either filtered or unfiltered air. Female rats were exposed to PM2.5 during pre-gestational and/or gestational stages. Twenty-one days post-fertilization, placentas were collected via cesarean section. In these placentas, oxygen diffusion capacity was measured, and the expression of angiogenic factors was analyzed using qPCR and immunohistochemistry. In groups exposed to PM2.5 during pre-gestational and/or gestational stages, a decrease in fetal weight, crown-rump length, theoretical and specific diffusion capacity, and an increase in HIF-1α expression were observed. In groups exposed exclusively to PM2.5 during the pre-gestational stage, there was an increase in the expression of placental genes Flt-1, Kdr, and PIGF. Additionally, in the placental labyrinth region, the expression of angiogenic factors was elevated. Changes in angiogenesis and angiogenic factors reflect adaptations to hypoxia, impacting fetal growth and oxygen supply. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that exposure to PM2.5, emitted from wood smoke, in both pre-gestational and gestational stages, affects fetal development and placental health. Higher heating value (HHV) is one of the most important parameters in determining the quality of the fuels. In this study, comparatively large datasets of ultimate and proximate analysis are constructed to be used in HHV estimation of several classes of fuels, including char & fossil fuels, agricultural wastes, manure (chicken, cow, horse, sheep, llama, and pig), sludge (like paper, paper-mil, sewage, and pulp), micro/macro-algae's, wastes (RDF and MSW), treated woods, untreated woods, and others (non-fossil pyrolysis oils) between the HHV range of 4.22-55.55 MJ/kg. The relationships of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atomic ratios for fuel classes are illustrated by using ternary plots, and the effects of elemental composition on HHV was analyzed with the extensive dataset. Then, the ultimate (U) and ultimate & proximate (UP) datasets were utilized separately to estimate the HHV by using artificial neural networks (ANN). Hyperparameter optimization was carried out and the best performing ANNs were determined for each dataset, which yielded R 2 values of 0.9719 and 0.9715, respectively. The results indicated that while ANNs trained by both datasets perform remarkably well, utilization of U dataset is sufficient for HHV estimation. Historically used pesticides poses a threat to biodiversity while their release pathways remain unclear. Trees could be a potential release source due to their long lifespan. This study examined 38 samples to assess pesticide concentrations in pedunculate oak from Belgium. Low concentrations of procymidone were detected in two samples from one stump. Our findings suggest that accumulations of historically used pesticides in pedunculate oaks within forests are improbable. We conclude that leaving dead wood poses no risks for pesticide release to the environment. However, further research involving diverse tree species and regions is needed to refine and validate this conclusion., (© 2024. Light-driven active ion transport discovered in nanomaterials (e.g., graphene, metal-organic framework, and MXene) implicates crucial applications in membrane-based technology and energy conversion systems. However, it remains a challenge to achieve bulk assembly. Herein, we employ the scalable wood as a framework for in situ growth of MoS 2 nanosheets to facilitate light-responsive ion transport. Owing to the aligned and negatively charged wood nanochannels, the MoS 2 -decorated wood exhibits an excellent nanofluidic conductivity of 8.3 × 10 -5 S cm -1 in 1 × 10 -6 M KCl. Asymmetric light illumination creates the separation of electrons and holes in MoS 2 nanosheets, enabling ions to move uphill against a wide range of concentration gradients. As a result, the MoS 2 -decorated wood can pump ions uphill against a 20-fold concentration gradient at a light intensity of 300 mW cm -2 . When the illumination is applied to the opposite side, the osmotic current along the 20-fold concentration gradient can be enhanced to 75.1 nA, and the corresponding osmotic energy conversion power density increases to more than 12.6 times that of the nonilluminated state. Based on the light-responsive behaviors, we are extending the use of MoS 2 -decorated wood as the ionic elements for nanofluidic circuits, such as ion switches, ion diodes, and ion transistors. This work provides a facile and scalable strategy for fabricating light-controlled nanofluidic devices from biomass materials.

Blood is commonly discovered at crime scenes in various forms, including stains, dried residue, pools, and fingerprints on assorted surfaces. Estimating the age of bloodstains is a crucial aspect of reconstructing crime scenes. This research aimed to investigate how the nature of different surfaces affects the estimation of bloodstain age, utilizing a reliable and non-destructive approach. The study employed ATR-FTIR spectroscopy in conjunction with Chemometric techniques such as PCA (Principal Component Analysis) and OPLSR (Orthogonal Signal Correction Partial Least Square Regression Analysis) to analyze spectral data and develop regression models for estimating bloodstain age on cement, metal, and wooden surfaces for up to eleven days. The chemometric models for bloodstains on all three substrates demonstrated strong performance, with predictive Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) values ranging from 1.1 to 1.43 and R 2 values from 0.84 to 0.89. Notably, the model developed for metal surfaces was found to be the most accurate with minimal prediction error. The findings of the study showed that the porosity of the substrates upon which bloodstains were found had a discernible influence on the age-related transformations observed in bloodstains; the majority of which occured within the spectral range of 2800 cm - 1 to 3500 cm - 1 ., (© 2024. These nanocomposites demonstrate improved thermal stability and char formation properties by integrating nanoparticles, such as nano-clays, graphene oxide, and metal oxides, into biopolymer matrices. This significantly mitigates the flammability of wood substrates, creating a robust barrier against heat and oxygen. The review provides a comprehensive examination of these advanced coatings' synthesis, characterization, and performance. By emphasizing recent innovations and outlining future research directions, this review underscores the potential of eco-friendly polymer nanocomposite coatings as next-generation fire retardants. This advancement supports the expanded utilization of wood in sustainable construction practices and aligns with global initiatives toward achieving carbon neutrality.

As an emerging two-dimensional (2D) material, MXene has garnered significant interest in advanced energy storage systems, yet the stackable structure, poor mechanical stability, and lack of moldability limit its large-scale applications. To address this challenge, herein, the self-assembly of MXene on carbonization-free wood was obtained to serve as high-performance electrodes for symmetrical all-wood eco-supercapacitors by a steam-driven self-assembly method. This method can be implemented in a low-temperature environment, significantly simplifying traditional high-temperature annealing processes and generating minimal impact on the environment, human health, and resource consumption. The environmentally friendly steam-driven self-assembly strategy can be further extended into various wood-based electrodes, regardless of the types and structures of wood. As a typical platform electrode, the optimized MXene@delignified balsa wood (MDBW) achieves high areal capacitance and specific capacitance values of 2.99 F cm -2 and 580.55 F g -1 at an extensive mass loading of 5.16 mg cm -2 , respectively, with almost loss-free capacitance after 10,000 cycles at 50 mA cm -2 . In addition, an all-solid-state symmetrical all-wood eco-supercapacitor was further assembled based on MDBW-20 as both positive and negative electrodes to achieve a high energy density of 19.22 μWh cm -2 at a power density of 0.58 mW cm -2 . This work provides an effective strategy to optimize wood-based electrodes for the practical application of biomass eco-supercapacitors.

Cooking with wood biomass fuels releases hazardous air pollutants, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs), that often disproportionally affect women and children. This study, conducted in Kwale and Siaya counties in Kenya, employed thermal desorption gas chromatography - mass spectrometry to analyse VOC emissions from cooking with a wood biomass three-stone open fire vs. top-lit updraft gasifier stove. In kitchens with adequate ventilation, total VOC levels increased from 35-252 μg∙m -3 before cooking to 2235-5371 μg∙m -3 during open fire cooking, whereas use of a gasifier stove resulted in reduced emissions from cooking by 48-77 % (506-2778 μg∙m -3 ). However, in kitchens with poor ventilation, there was only a moderate difference in total VOC levels between the two methods of cooking (9034-9378 μg∙m -3 vs. 6727-8201 μg∙m -3 for the three-stone open fire vs. gasifier stove, respectively). Using a non-target screening approach revealed significantly increased levels of VOCs, particularly benzenoids, oxygenated and heterocyclic compounds, when cooking with the traditional open fire, especially in closed kitchens, highlighting the effects of poor ventilation. Key hazardous VOCs included benzene, naphthalene, phenols and furans, suggesting potential health risks from cooking. In kitchens with good ventilation, use of the gasifier stove markedly reduced emissions of these priority toxic VOCs compared to cooking with an open fire. Thus, substituting open fires with gasifier stoves could help to improve household air quality and alleviate health risks. The study revealed that VOCs were present prior to cooking, possibly originating from previously cooked food (buildup) or the outside environment. VOC emissions were also exacerbated by reduced air flow in high humidity during rainfall, suggesting an area for further research. Background and Aims: The complexity of fossil forest ecosystems is difficult to reconstruct due to the fragmentary nature of the fossil record. However, detailed morpho-anatomical studies of well-preserved individual fossils can provide key information on tree growth and ecology, including in biomes with no modern analog such as the lush forests that developed in the polar regions during past greenhouse climatic episodes., Methods: We describe an unusual-looking stem from Middle Triassic (ca 240 Ma) deposits of Antarctica with over 100 very narrow growth-rings and conspicuous persistent vascular traces through the wood. Sections of the specimen were prepared using the cellulose acetate peel technique to determine its systematic affinities and analyse its growth., Key Results: The new fossil shows similarities with the form genus Woodworthia and with conifer stems from the Triassic of Antarctica, and is assigned to the conifers. Vascular traces are interpreted as those of small branches retained on the trunk. Growth-ring analyses reveal one of the slowest growth rates reported in the fossil record, with an average of 0.2 mm/season. While the tree was growing within the Triassic polar circle, sedimentological data and growth-ring information from other fossil trees, including from the same locality, support the presence of favorable conditions in the region., Conclusions: The specimen is interpreted as a dwarf conifer tree that grew under a generally favorable regional climate but whose growth was suppressed due to stressful local site conditions. This study presents a novel approach to fabricating interdigitated capacitive (IDC) touch sensors using graphite-based pencils on a wood substrate. The sensors were designed to detect touches and pressure variations, offering a cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution for sensor fabrication. The fabrication process involved abrasion of graphite pencils on a wooden substrate to create conductive traces, followed by the integration of interdigitated electrode structures. Capacitance variations resulting from touch interactions were investigated to calibrate sensor responses for tailored tasks. The sensitivity of the sensor was found to be 1.2 pF/kPa, highlighting its responsiveness to pressure variations. Additionally, the sensors were interfaced with an Arduino Uno microcontroller board to demonstrate practical applications, such as replicating arrow key functionality. Additionally, the sensors exhibit sensitivity to environmental factors, with the relative change in capacitance increasing from 0.1 to 0.65 as relative humidity ranges from 30 to 90%. Furthermore, variations in temperature from 30 to 60ºC result in a relative change in capacitance increasing to approximately 0.5. The results indicate the feasibility and versatility of using wood-based substrates and graphite-based pencils for fabricating IDC touch sensors, offering promising prospects for sustainable and accessible sensor technology., (© 2024. A long-standing key issue for examining the relationships between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning (BEF), such as forest productivity, is whether ecosystem functions are influenced by the total number of species or the properties of a few key species. Compared with controlled ecosystem experiments, the BEF relationships in secondary forest remain unclear, as do the effects of common species richness and rare species richness on the variation in ecosystem functions. To address this issue, we conducted field surveys at five sampling sites (1 ha each) with subtropical secondary evergreen broad-leaved forest vegetation. We found (1) a positive correlation between species richness and standing aboveground biomass (AGB); (2) that common species were primarily responsible for the distribution patterns of species abundance and dominance; although they accounted for approximately 25% of the total species richness on average, they represented 86-91% of species abundance and 88-97% of species dominance; and (3) that common species richness could explain much more of the variation in AGB than total species richness (common species plus rare species) at both the site and plot scales. Because rare species and common species were not equivalent in their ability to predict productivity in the biodiversity-ecosystem productivity model, redundant information should be eliminated to obtain more accurate results. As regulatory frameworks for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) evolve, the solid waste community seeks to manage PFAS risks effectively. Despite extensive research on PFAS in municipal solid waste (MSW) and wastewater sludge, there is limited information on a major global waste stream which seldom gleans regulatory oversight - construction and demolition debris (CDD). This study sampled a CDD processing facility to provide material-specific information on the PFAS profile within CDD. The bulk CDD accepted by this facility was separated into major categories, representatively sampled, then characterized for total available PFAS (∑ 92 PFAS). As reprocessed CDD is ultimately recycled or landfilled, often unencapsulated or in unlined landfills, the PFAS leaching potential was also examined using two leaching procedures. Among the categories assessed for total PFAS, carpeting, carpet padding, and gypsum drywall showed elevated concentrations compared to other components, with most of the PFAS mass contributed by precursor species. However, materials with the highest total PFAS, such as carpeting, did not necessarily exhibit the highest leaching, and leachate was predominantly composed of terminal species rather than precursors. Tens of thousands of people in southern Europe suffer from Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN), and four times as many are at risk. Incidental ingestion of aristolochic acids (AAs), stemming from the ubiquitous Aristolochia clematitis (birthwort) weed in the region, leads to DNA adduct-induced toxicity in kidney cells, the primary cause of BEN. Numerous cofactors, including toxic organics and metals, have been investigated, but all have shown small contributions to the overall BEN relative to non-BEN village distribution gradients. Here, we reveal that combustion-derived pollutants from wood and coal burning in Serbia also contaminate arable soil and test as plausible causative factors of BEN. Using a GC-MS screening method, biomass-burning-derived furfural and coal-burning-derived medium-chain alkanes were detected in soil samples from BEN endemic areas levels at up to 63-times and 14-times higher, respectively, than in nonendemic areas. Significantly higher amounts were also detected in colocated wheat grains. Coexposure studies with cultured kidney cells showed that these pollutants enhance DNA adduct formation by AA, - the cause of AA nephrotoxicity and carcinogenicity. With the coincidence of birthwort-derived AAs and the widespread practice of biomass and coal burning for household cooking and heating purposes and agricultural burning in rural low-lying flood-affected areas in the Balkans, these results implicate combustion-derived pollutants in promoting the development of BEN.

Wetland management maintains nitrogen (N) removal capacity in mature and overgrown constructed wetlands (CWs). We evaluated whether CW management by macrophyte harvesting, and subsequent installation of woodchips-based floating beds (WFBs) planted with Glyceria maxima and Filipendula ulmaria improved N removal. In sixteen heavily overgrown experimental CWs, we applied four treatments: i) only macrophyte harvesting, ii) 5% of the harvested-CW surface covered with WFBs, iii) 20% WFBs cover, and iv) a control treatment (heavily overgrown). N removal was determined in all wetlands at nine occasions. Plant biomass accrual, N assimilation, and denitrification genes nirS, nirK, nosZI and nosZII on plant roots and woodchips from WFBs were estimated. Macrophyte harvesting improved N removal of heavily overgrown CWs, whereas subsequent WFB installation only sometimes improved N removal. Mean N removal efficiencies (± standard deviation) overall were 41 ± 15 %, 45 ± 20 %, 46 ± 16 % and 27 ± 8.3 % for treatments i to iv, respectively. Relative biomass production, root length and root surface area for G.maxima (mean ± standard deviation: 234 ± 114 %, 40 ± 6.5 cm, 6308 ± 1059 cm 2 g -1 , respectively) were higher than those for F. ulmaria (63 ± 86 %, 28 ± 12 cm, 3131 ± 535 cm 2 g -1 , respectively) whereas biomass N assimilation was higher for F. ulmaria (1.8 ± 0.9 gNm -2 of WFB) than for G. maxima (1.3 ± 0.5 gNm -2 of WFB). Denitrification gene abundance was higher on plant roots than on woodchips while G. maxima hosted higher root denitrification gene abundance than F. ulmaria. We conclude that macrophyte harvesting improves N removal in heavily overgrown CWs. WFBs installation has the potential to support plant growth and denitrification in surface-flow constructed wetlands. Forests make immense contributions to societies in the form of ecological services and sustainable industrial products. However, they face major challenges to their viability and economic use due to climate change and growing biotic and economic threats, for which recombinant DNA (rDNA) technology can sometimes provide solutions. But the application of rDNA technologies to forest trees faces major social and biological obstacles that make its societal acceptance a 'wicked' problem without straightforward solutions. We discuss the nature of these problems, and the social and biological innovations that we consider essential for progress. As case studies of biological challenges, we focus on studies of modifications in wood chemistry and transformation efficiency. We call for major innovations in regulations, and the dissolution of method-based market barriers, that together could lead to greater research investments, enable wide use of field studies, and facilitate the integration of rDNA-modified trees into conventional breeding programs. Without near-term adoption of such innovations, rDNA-based solutions will be largely unavailable to help forests adapt to the growing stresses from climate change and the proliferation of forest pests, nor will they be available to provide economic and environmental benefits from expanded use of wood and related bioproducts as part of an expanding bioeconomy., (© 2024 The Authors. Due to climate change, wildfires have increased in intensity and duration. While wildfires threaten lives directly, the smoke has more far-reaching adverse health impacts. During an extreme 2017 wildfire event, residents of Seeley Lake, Montana were exposed to unusually high levels of wood smoke (WS) causing sustained effects on lung function (decreased FEV 1 /FVC). Objective : The present study utilized an animal model of WS exposure to research cellular and molecular mechanisms of the resulting health effects. Methods : Mice were exposed to inhaled WS utilizing locally harvested wood to recapitulate community exposures. WS was generated at a rate resulting in a 5 mg/m 3 PM 2.5 exposure for five days. Results : This exposure resulted in a similar 0.28 mg/m 2 particle deposition (lung surface area) in mice that was calculated for human exposure. As with the community observations, there was a significant effect on lung function, increased resistance, and decreased compliance, that was more pronounced in males at an extended (2 months) timepoint and males were more affected than females: ex vivo assays illustrated changes to alveolar macrophage functions (increased TNFα secretion and decreased efferocytosis). Female mice had significantly elevated IL-33 levels in lungs, however, pretreatment of male mice with IL-33 resulted in an abrogation of the observed WS effects, suggesting a dose-dependent role of IL-33. Additionally, there were greater immunotoxic effects in male mice. Discussion : These findings replicated the outcomes in humans and suggest that IL-33 is involved in a mechanism of the adverse effects of WS exposures that inform on potential sex differences.

In the manufacturing processes, consideration of sustainability is of particular importance. The current study is concerned with the influences of changing the process variables on the reduction of pollutions in the wood-CNC machining operation. Noise and dust are the studied pollutants in the present research work. Process variables include feed rate, spindle speed, step-over, and depth of cut, and the aim is to predict the behavior of aforementioned pollutants variations in the current process. The amounts of these harmful factors are measured based on existing standards. In order to analyze the findings, adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) and regression analysis methods have been employed, separately. The effects of process parameters on response variables have been comprehensively studied. The research findings demonstrated that for the present problem, ANFIS outcomes are more accurate. According to the mean absolute error (MAE) criterion, the prediction errors of ANFIS for noise and dust factors were computed to, in turn, 0.50 and 14.89. Ideal wave-absorbing materials are required to possess the characteristics such as being "broad, lightweight, thin, and strong." Biomass-derived materials for absorbing electromagnetic waves (EMWs) are widely explored due to their low cost, lightweight, environmentally friendly, high specific surface area, and porous structure. In this study, wood was used as the raw material, and N-doped carbon nanotubes were grown in situ in porous carbon derived from wood, loaded with magnetic metal Co nanoparticles through chemical vapor deposition. The Fir@Co@CNT composite material exhibited a three-dimensional conductive electromagnetic network structure and excellent impedance matching, thereby demonstrating excellent wave absorption performance. By controlling the introduction of carbon nanotubes, the roles of polarization loss and conduction loss in the Fir@Co@CNT composite material were precisely regulated. The Fir@Co@CNT 1:5 composite material achieved a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of -43.03 dB in the low-frequency region and a maximum effective absorption bandwidth (EAB max ) of 4.3 GHz (1.5 mm). Meanwhile, the Fir@Co@CNT 1:10 composite material achieved a RL min of -52 dB with a thickness of only 2.3 mm, along with an EAB max of 4.2 GHz (1.6 mm). Both materials collectively cover the entire C-band, X-band, and Ku-band in terms of EAB. This work introduces a method for regulating polarization loss and conduction loss, showcasing the potential of biomass carbon materials as low-frequency EMW absorption materials for the first time. Wood is increasingly being appreciated in construction due to its valuable environmental attributes. This paper explores the environmental and market performance of two wood supply chains in Northern Italy. Larch and chestnut wood are extracted and processed to obtain beams, planks, MDF panels and energy. LCA is performed to evaluate the environmental impacts of 1m 3 of extracted wood through a cradle-to-gate approach. Then, a biogenic carbon analysis is carried out using the EN 16449:2014 standard including a comparison of different end-of-life treatments. Also, OSB is proposed as an alternative path for wood chips and contrasted to the current energy scenario. Moreover, solid wood beams and planks are compared with engineered wood products (EWPs). Lastly, a market analysis is conducted to assess the market trends of the different wood products studied. The LCA shows similar results for both wood species across most impact categories, with slightly higher values for the chestnut system. Most impacts are related to the production of MDF boards and the energy valorization of wood chips. Biogenic carbon analysis shows a negative balance of emissions with -314 and -205 kg of CO 2 eq for larch and chestnut, respectively. It also suggests that OSB manufacturing can be a valuable alternative to the energy use of wood chips and that the end-of-life treatment with better results is recycling. The comparison of beams and planks with engineered wood products supports that solid wood poses a better environmental alternative in similar applications. Market analysis shows stagnation in the apparent consumption of wood products in the European market and a slight growth in the Italian one between 2018 and 2022. Woodchips are widely used as a low-cost and renewable organic carbon source for denitrifying biofilms in passive nutrient removal systems. One limitation of wood-based biofiltration systems is their relatively poor removal of phosphorus (P) from subsurface drainage and stormwaters, necessitating the use of additional filter media when co-treatment of nitrogen (N) and P is required. Here, we show that anoxic-oxic cycling of woodchip media, which enhances nitrate (NO 3 ) removal by increasing the mobilization of organic carbon from wood, also improves orthophosphate (P - ) removal by increasing the mobilization of organic carbon from wood, also improves orthophosphate (P i ) uptake onto woodchips. Orthophosphate removal rates in flow-through woodchip columns ranged from 0 to 34.9 μg PO 4 3- L -1  h -1 under continuously-saturated (anoxic) conditions, and increased to 17.5 to 71.9 μg PO 4 3- L -1  h -1 in columns undergoing drying-rewetting (oxic-anoxic) cycles. The highest P i removal efficiencies were observed in the first 20 h after reactors were re-flooded, and were concurrent with maxima in polyphosphate kinase (ppk) gene expression by the polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs) Accumulibacter spp. and Pseudomonas spp. Batch experiments confirmed that anoxic-anaerobic-oxic pre-incubation conditions led to orthophosphate uptake onto woodchips as high as 74.9 ± 0.8 mg PO 4 3- /kg woodchip, and batch tests with autoclaved woodchips demonstrated that P i uptake was due to biological processes and not adsorption. NO 3 - removal in batch tests was also greatest under oxic incubation conditions, attributed to greater carbon availability in hypoxic to anoxic zones in woodchip biofilms. The use of genetic data for timber species and population assignment is a powerful tool for combating the illegal timber trade, but the challenges of extracting DNA from timber have prevented the routine use of genetics as a supply chain management tool. To overcome these challenges, we explored the feasibility of focused ultrasound extraction (FUSE) for rapid DNA release from timber. Using high-pressure ultrasound pulses, FUSE generates a cavitation bubble cloud that disintegrates samples into acellular debris, resulting in the mechanical release of DNA. In this work, FUSE was applied to white oak (Quercus alba) timber shavings to test the feasibility of using FUSE for timber DNA extraction for the first time. Results showed that FUSE processing disintegrated the tissue samples and released significant quantities of DNA. After five minutes of tissue processing DNA quantities of 0.21 ± 0.02 ng/mg, 0.99 ± 0.32 ng/mg, and 0.14 ± 0.01 ng/mg, were released from medium, coarse, and combination shaving groups, respectively. Amplification and sequencing of regions within the matK and rbcL chloroplast genes confirmed that the quality of DNA prepared with FUSE was suitable for PCR and short-read sequencing applications. Overall, these results show that FUSE can serve as a DNA sample preparation method capable of releasing high-quality DNA from timber in a fraction of the time required by conventional extraction methods. Despite the global transition towards cleaner energy sources observed over the last decade, disparities in access persist worldwide. The dependence on biomass for household heating exacerbates fuel poverty, as economically vulnerable households face challenges in obtaining certified firewood and often resort to using contaminated biomass as a substitute, either partially or completely. We examined black carbon (BC) particle concentrations -a marker for combustion- during wood stove operation through a five-day case study in a typical Chilean household. BC increased rapidly following the ignition of the stove, with the combustion of dry Eucalyptus globulus logs yielding a substantially lower peak (5.29 μg/m 3 ) than when using unclean biomass: 35.75 μg/m 3 with demolition wood and painted furniture, and 87.11 μg/m 3 with the addition of a blend of particleboard with polystyrene foam. During the latter two events, BC particles remained indoors for about 20 h before the concentrations reverted to pre-spike levels. The slow decay in BC concentrations was further influenced by the infiltration of outdoor air. The mean indoor BC concentrations were comparable to or even exceeded those observed on busy roads in major cities worldwide. These results highlight the risks associated with limited access to clean fuels for indoor heating, alongside inadequate insulation. Using satellite remote sensing, we show the distribution, dominant type, and amounts of marine debris off the northeast coast of Japan after the Great East Japan Earthquake on 11 March 2011 and subsequent tsunami. Extensive marine debris was found on March 12, with the maximal amount found on March 13. The debris was found to be mainly wood (possibly lumber wood), with an estimated 1.5 million metric tons in an elongated water area of 6800 km 2 (18 km E-W and 380 km N-S) near parallel to the coast between 36.75°N and 40.25°N. The amount decreased rapidly with time, with scattered debris patches captured in high-resolution satellite images up to April 6. These results provide new insights on the initial distribution of the Japanese Tsunami Marine Debris, which may be used to help find bottom deposition of debris and help refine numerical models to predict the debris trajectory and fate. The mass spectral database of tree species built by US Fish and Wildlife Service has thousands of entries and has been a valuable resource to combat illegal logging and international trade. The database was and continues to be constructed using a particular ambient ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOF-MS) platform in the agency branch in Ashland, OR, with which queries of unknown wood samples are investigated exclusively. Laboratories that operate different MS instruments also have an interest in using the database if they can produce valid matches to known samples compatible with the database. Four species were selected for inter-laboratory comparison using Orbitrap MS instruments and the equivalent TOF-MS platform with direct analysis in real time ionization of institution-sourced wood samples. Identities of the known samples were confirmed by examination of their microscopic wood anatomy. Orbitrap analysis was able to identify each species as confidently as the TOF instruments, often with less variation in spectra but not necessarily greater mass accuracy or better-matched signal abundance to the control database. The earliest evidence for complex tool use in the archaeological record dates to 3.3 Ma. While wooden tools may have been used by our earliest ancestors, the evidence is absent due to poor preservation. However, insights into possible early hominin wooden tool use can be gained from observing the tool-use practices of our closest living relatives, chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes). By using stone hammers used to crack various nuts, chimpanzees leave a durable material signature comprised of formal tools and associated diagnostic fragments. While the archaeological evidence of chimpanzee wooden tool use is temporary, the combination of stone hammers and wooden anvils can create a more enduring lithic record. This study explores the lithic assemblages associated with wooden and stone anvil use at nut-cracking sites in Taï National Park, Côte d'Ivoire, using technological and use-wear analyses. Our results indicate clear differences in density, fracture patterns, and use-wear in the lithic records between wooden anvil and stone anvil sites. New archaeological excavations at six chimpanzee nut-cracking sites reveal that the anvils' material directly influences the visibility of nut-cracking evidence in the archaeological record. By examining the nature of the lithic signatures associated with wooden anvil and stone anvil use by chimpanzees, we can formulate hypotheses about the probability of such behaviors being preserved and identifiable in the Plio-Pleistocene hominin archaeological record. The variability in material signatures from nut-cracking on different anvils suggests that stone anvils leave a clear archaeological record. Evidence for wooden anvil use is likely underrepresented due to the more ephemeral nature of the associated percussive damage and material signature. The conveniently recoverable piezocatalyst with self-floating and stable performance has drawn wide attention. Herein, MoS 2 was anchored on 1-cm-square eucalyptus wood blocks via a facile hydrothermal/solvothermal process to fabricate two floating piezocatalysts, i.e., MoS 2 /unpretreated wood (MUW) and MoS 2 /pretreated wood (MPW). FeCl 3 solution was used as a Lewis acid to pretreat the wood through partial hydrolyzing cellulose and hemicellulose for an purpose to creat rich micropores for MoS 2 loading in the wood and to form MoFe heterojunction. The piezocatalytic properties and performance of the prepared wood were systematically studied. The scanning electron microscopy confirms MoS 2 was anchored on wood surface. The macroscopic photos show that MoS 2 penetrated through the MPW interior whereas it was only loaded on the wood surface layer. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals the shift of Mo 3d and S 2p, verifying the heterojunction formation of MPW. The Fourier transform infrared spectra prove the partial hydrolysis of wood matrix. In comparison to MUW, MPW had excellent piezocatalytic property, wide pH adaptability, convenient recyclability and high stability. Sildenafil and Cr 6+ ions could be completely removed in 20 and 15 min, respectively, by MPW. Contrastly, the removal efficiency of sildenafil and Cr 6+ by MUW was 78.6 % and 68.3 % in 20 and 15 min, respectively. After five cycles of use, the removal ratio of sildenafil was 62.4 % by MUW and 90.5 % by MPW in 20 min. The mineralization efficiency of sildenafil reached 99.2 % in 30 min by MPW, and various types of N/S-containing intermediates were effectively degraded. The electron spin resonance characterization and active species scavenging experiments displayed that e - and • O 2 - were major active species responsible for Cr 6+ piezoreduction by MUW and MPW, while • O 2 - and • OH were the dominant species accounting for sildenafil degradation by MUW and MPW, respectively. And • OH was not generated in the MUW piezocatalysis process. MPW had higher piezoelectric current and lower resistance at the electron transfer interface than MUW. Wood is reportedly more difficult to maintain in hygienic condition versus other food contact materials, yet its use in produce packing and retail warrants efforts to reduce the risk of microbial pathogen contamination and attachment. This study characterized antifouling capabilities of fluorinated silanes applied to wood used in fresh edible produce handling to render the wood superhydrophobic and less supportive of bacterial pathogen attachment. Pine and oak cubic coupon surfaces were treated with 1% (w/w) silane or left untreated. Treated and untreated coupons were inoculated with Salmonella enterica or Listeria monocytogenes and held to facilitate pathogen attachment for 1, 4, or 8 h. Silane treatment of wood produced significant reductions in the proportions of strongly attaching cells for both pathogens versus loosely attaching cells (P < 0.01). Salmonella attachment demonstrated a dependency on wood treatment; silane-treated wood supported a lower fraction of strongly adhering cells (1.87 ± 1.24 log CFU/cm 2 ) versus untreated wood (3.72 ± 0.67 log CFU/cm 2 ). L. monocytogenes demonstrated significant declines in strongly attaching cells during extended exposure to silane-treated wood, from 7.59 ± 0.14 to 5.27 ± 0.68 log CFU/cm 2 over 8 h post-inoculation. Deadwood is an important element of forest ecosystems that affects many of its components, including the soil environment. Our research is an attempt to determine the role of decaying wood in shaping the properties of forest soils in mountain ecosystems. The aim of our research was to present the influence of beech deadwood on physicochemical properties and microbiological diversity of soils. The research was carried out in the Baba Góra Massif at its northern exposure. The research plots were established in the altitude gradient at 600, 800 and 1000 m above sea level. On each plot, samples were taken from decaying wood, from the soil directly under the decaying log, and a soil sample 1 m from the log as a control. We determined the basic properties of the samples, that is pH, C and N concentration and lignin content. The enzymatic activity and additionally, the taxonomic composition of soil bacterial and fungal communities was determined in the collected samples. Our research indicates the important role of decaying beech wood in shaping the properties of forest soils. We noted a positive effect of decaying wood on the properties of the tested soils. Soils affected by deadwood were characterized by significantly higher pH, C and N concentrations compared to control soils, regardless of their location in the altitude gradient. Additionally, we found that soils affected by decaying wood are characterized by a different composition of microorganisms regardless of their location in the altitude gradient. In control soil the fungal and bacterial alpha diversity were lowest compared with the deadwood and soil under the influence of deadwood. Our results may have practical applications in the management of forest ecosystems.
