Examination covered 245 individuals and included characteristics of endocrine state of pulp and paper plant workers over 2011-2012, in comparison with data from 1990, as well as comparison with reference groups of male workers with no contact with chemical'industry in Arkhangelsk. Findings are both in main and reference groups general decrease in levels of cortisol, thyroxin;progesterone, testosterone, insulin, somatotropin and increased serum level of estradiol. With that, inside both groups, reliable tendencies to increased levels of cortisol, thyroxin, insulin, SSH and lower concentration of progesterone in the pulp and paper plant workers vs. the reference group members. Positive tendency was absence of abnormal concentrations of insulin, SSH and lower frequency of high cortisol levels in the pulp and paper plant workers nowadays.

At an international online expert meeting held on September 16, 2021, the results of the empagliflozin research program EMPA-REG Outcome, EMPEROR-Reduced and EMPEROR-Preserved were reviewed. We analyzed cardiovascular and renal outcomes during the treatment with empagliflozin in patients with chronic heart failure, regardless of the presence of type 2 diabetes mellitus. The positive results of the EMPEROR-Preserved study are updated and their significance for clinical practice is discussed. Several proposals have been adopted that will accelerate the introduction of empagliflozin therapy into practice in patients with heart failure and overcome clinical inertia.

On December 18, 2020, an expert council was held with the participation of members of the Russian Society of Cardiology, the Eurasian Association of Ther-apists, the National Society for Atherothrombosis, the National Society for Evi-dence-Based Pharmacotherapy, and the Russian Heart Failure Society. The event was devoted to the discussion of the correct use of research data of "real clinical practice" in decision making.

The purpose of the investigation was to comprehensively assess working conditions and their impact on the health of female workers engaged in the manufacture of present-day paper wallpaper. A complex of sanitary-and-hygienic, clinical-and-physiological, sociomedical, and statistical studies was used to tackle the tasks set in the investigation. Stage 1 made a sanitary-and-hygienic assessment of industrial factors (microclimate, noise, vibration, the content of toxicants and dust) in the workplaces of female workers from the papering shops using an Elita rolling automatic machine. The following stage analyzed morbidity among the workers and identified a number of functional parameters. A combination of poor factors characterizing their parameters and exceeding the sanitary standards influenced on the workers engaged in the manufacture of paper wallpaper. The leading harmful industrial factors are heating microclimate, production noise, and the working air level of harmful chemical substances in the working air. The production process under such microclimatic conditions causes the body's thermal changes characterized by the senses of total warm discomfort and the tension of thermoregulatory mechanisms, as confirmed by weighed mean skin temperature studies and decreased working capacity. The working conditions in the manufacture of wallpaper products are shown to result in an increase in female morbidity.

Objective: to assess an effect of chemical contaminants contained in emissions of pulp and paper mill on prevalence respiratory and cardiovascular diseases in population of Novodvinsk. The average annual concentrations of chemicals of concern were calculated by modeling. A prevalence of population was studied by using of the primary medical documentation in sex among children from 0 to 17 and adults from 65 and older Hazard index (HIi) was used to assess the non-cancer health effects. Unit risk was used to calculate individual cancer risk (CR). Testing of null hypothesis was conducted by one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and ?2. The hazard index for respiratory tract (HIi = 3,54; 95% CI: 3.34-3.70) and cardiovascular system (HIi = 0.78; 95% /DE: 0.74-0.82) in the district close to the Arkhangelsk pulp and paper mill (APPM) were higher than in remote districts. In this district the prevalence of bronchial asthma in boys (30.7+13.8%), women (47.0+9.8%) and men (127.4+45.2%) was the highest. Also in this district the prevalence of hypertension among women (139.1+14.4%) and men (311.5+56.1%), diseases of veins among women (48.2+10.8%) and diseases of upper respiratory tract among men (177.0+36.4%) was higher than in remote districts from the APPM. The level of CR in the district located close by the APPM was acceptable (1.0 (10-5; 95% CI: 9.0 (10-6-1, 18(10-5).

Hydrolytic ability of laboratory enzyme preparations from fungus of the Penicillium genus was investigated using kraft pulp from nonbleached softwood and bleached hardwood cellulose as substrates. The enzyme preparations were shown to efficiently hydrolyze both softwood and hardwood cellulose. The yields of glucose and reducing sugars were 24-36 g/l and 27-37 g/l from 100 g/l of dry substrate in 48 h, respectively, and depended on the number of substrate grinding cycles.

To evaluate the cytogenetic and cytotoxic effects of a set of pollutions in the town of Koryazhma, the investigators made a complete karyological analysis (cytogenetic, apoptotic, and indirect proliferation parameters) of buccal and nasal epithelial exfoliative cells in two groups of old school age children living at various distances from a pulp-and-paper mill (PPM). The residential area that is adjacent to the PPM can be considered to be poor in the influence of genotoxic factors since there were 1.6- and 1.65-fold increases in cytogenetic disorders and cells with an atypically shaped nucleus, respectively, with a 1.57-fold reduction in the level of cell apoptosis. Karyological changes were revealed in the nasal mucosa, rather than in the buccal mucosa, which permitted one to recommend for the evaluation of the influence of environmental factors, the impact of ambient air pollution in particular, and to conduct cytogenetic studies on the cells of not only the buccal epithelium (that has been better studied), but also those of the nasal epithelium.

150 patients with acute festering odontogenic periostitis were under observation. In 75 of them Koletex-M absorbent paper was used as draining material containing as active components metronidazole, dimexide and sodium alginate. In the control group of patients traditional schemes of treatment were used. Treatment process efficacy was estimated by microbiological and cytological studies. It was found that Koletex-M absorbent paper use reduced postoperative wound microbe semination. In 3 days the cells of regenerative series were found that led to speedy wound healing and reduction of temporary disability terms.

The effect of cellocandin, an enzymatic preparation from Getrichum candidum 3C-106 with cellulolytic and xylanolytic activities, on defibring of waste paper and acceleration of desiccation of paper pulp was studied. It was shown that cellocandin accelerated defibring of waste paper to cellulose fibers and desiccation of cellulose suspension.

Sanitary-chemical, bacteriological and toxicological characterization of sediments in the regions of the pulp and paper mills sewage letting out are given. Methods of the analytical control are offered.

The contributors used the sensibilization threshold to establish MACs for the dust of the fodder yeast produced as a result of pulp and paper waste products' recycling. The product belongs to the group of substances with low toxicity. It does not produce local irritation and exhibits sensibilization properties in case of both epi- and intracutaneous introduction. The sensibilization threshold in repeated introductions of protein-containing dusts was registered at 4.1 mg/m3. In industrial conditions, the fodder yeast concentrations at the level of about 4 mg/m3 caused increased morbidity with temporary disability.

A complex physiological-hygienic assessment of the adaptational capabilities of the organism of students trained to be electrofitters and technologists in the dynamics of a 2-year course in vocational-technical schools has been carried out. The data obtained show the tension of adaptational mechanisms not only during the first, but also during the second year of studying. It has been found out that the conditions of occupational training are the factor that impedes the adaptation of students to studying at VTS.

The use of the Ames test for the analysis of industrial effluents from cellulose production and sewage waters varying in the degree of purification with the aid of a metabolic activation system from rat and fish liver with Salmonella strains TA 98 and TA 100 revealed a strong direct mutagenic effect of strain TA 100 in samples after cellulose chlorination. The multistage procedure of sewage water purification allows to remove practically completely the mutagenic substances. A simultaneous study of cytotoxic effects of industrial effluents on mammalian cells shows that the mutagenic activity is exhibited in not toxic concentrations. The urgency of a regular biological control over the genotoxicity of industrial effluents from the sulfate production of cellulose is under discussion.

The lanthanide fluorescence immunoassay was elaborated for quantitative determination of the total thyroxin T4 in bloodstain dried in filter paper; the fields of its clinical application were defined. The method is based on the hardphase concurrent immunoassay with specific monoclonal antibodies to T4 marked by chelates of europium ions and with conjugate of the T3 heterologous hapten sorbed in plate holes with bovine serum albumin. Measurements of the fluorescence intensity were made by a fluorometer in the time resolution mode. The method ensures the T4 determination in a dry bloodstain with a diameter of 3.4 mm within the concentration range of 0 to 400 nmol/l and with the variation coefficient of below or equal to 15%; the results correlated with the findings of the T4 analysis by the DELFIA Neo T4 set, "Wallac Oy", Finland. The method efficiency was demonstrated for screening and verifying the congenital thyroid deficiency in newborns; it was also confirmed that the method can be used for monitoring the functional thyroid condition in adult patients.

The paper summarizes data on laboratory and clinical assessment of Corega denture adhesive cream adhesive properties: adhesion strength and time of adhesive material fixing. Clinical assessment was based on Ulitovsky-Leontyev denture fixation index evaluated in 18 edentulous patients with full removable dentures 1 and 12 months after denture manufacturing. After one year of evaluation denture fixation in patients using Corega denture adhesive cream was 8-15% better (depending on alveolar bed anatomy) than in controls proving that Corega improves full denture adaptation to physiological atrophy of alveolar bone.

A large body of empirical research shows that psychosocial risk factors (PSRFs) such as low socio-economic status, social isolation, stress, type-D personality, depression and anxiety increase the risk of incident coronary heart disease (CHD) and also contribute to poorer health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and prognosis in patients with establishedCHD. PSRFs may also act as barriers to lifestyle changes and treatment adherence and may moderate the effects of cardiac rehabilitation (CR). Furthermore, there appears to be a bidirectional interaction between PSRFs and the cardiovascular system. Stress, anxiety and depression affect the cardiovascular system through immune, neuroendocrine and behavioural pathways. In turn, CHD and its associated treatments may lead to distress in patients, including anxiety and depression. In clinical practice, PSRFs can be assessed with single-item screening questions, standardised questionnaires, or structured clinical interviews. Psychotherapy and medication can be considered to alleviate any PSRF-related symptoms and to enhance HRQoL, but the evidence for a definite beneficial effect on cardiac endpoints is inconclusive. A multimodal behavioural intervention, integrating counselling for PSRFs and coping with illness should be included within comprehensive CR. Patients with clinically significant symptoms of distress should be referred for psychological counselling or psychologically focused interventions and/or psychopharmacological treatment. To conclude, the success of CR may critically depend on the interdependence of the body and mind and this interaction needs to be reflected through the assessment and management of PSRFs in line with robust scientific evidence, by trained staff, integrated within the core CR team.

A method for determining MAO-inhibitory activity of pharmacological compounds is described (for primary screening). The advantages of this method are as follows: quick analysis, small amount of reagents, visual estimation of the results of screening.

A method for bacterial culture storage and transportation is suggested consisting in impregnation of filter paper disks with broth culture and drying. Bacterial cultures can be stored in this mode for at least a year at 4 degrees C.

Standard test paper, recommended by the WHO for the assessment of the arthropod sensitivity, was used to assess the sensitivity of Ornithodoros papillipes, the agent of tick-borne relapsing fever, to a number of pesticides widely used in or holding good promise for the agent control. Poor sensitivity of the tick to dieldrin, malathion, propoxur, bendiocarb (less than 40% of the ticks died after 1 h exposure), satisfactory sensitivity to DDT, and permetrin (60% of the ticks died), and very high sensitivity to deltametrin (100% death of the ticks) were revealed. The authors believe that the ticks will be similarly sensitive to other cyan-containing pyretroids.

Brief intensive behavioral interventions which promise a one session miracle cure from drug or alcohol dependence are very common in the Russian addiction psychiatry, particularly in its commercial domain. Unlike traditional shamanism these behavioral interventions are presented to the patients as the most recent advances in the main stream addiction medicine and therefore they can be called "scientifically decorated shamanism". The paper includes classification of these methods, reasons for this phenomenon to be so common in the Russian addiction psychiatry (narcology), and also possible approaches to the modernization of the Russian narcology system with evidence based approach to research and clinical practice to be the major one.

The authors compare the results of vanillylmandelic acid (VMA) excretion measurements by high-voltage electrophoresis on paper and by microelectrophoresis on cellulose acetate. Transverse scanning of electrophoregrams has been used for quantitative evaluation of the results of microelectrophoregrams on cellulose acetate. The results of VMA excretion measurements by the two methods have been in good correlation: r = 0.93, n = 15, y = 0.17 + 0.78x, p less than 0.01. Electrophoresis on cellulose acetate is three times less labor consuming and can be performed with Soviet equipment and maintenance medium. The excretion intensity can be assessed visually by reference values of VMA concentration.
