Brain-computer interface (BCI) based on steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) have attracted much attention in the field of intelligent robotics. Traditional SSVEP-based BCI systems mostly use synchronized triggers without identifying whether the user is in the control or non-control state, resulting in a system that lacks autonomous control capability. Therefore, this paper proposed a SSVEP asynchronous state recognition method, which constructs an asynchronous state recognition model by fusing multiple time-frequency domain features of electroencephalographic (EEG) signals and combining with a linear discriminant analysis (LDA) to improve the accuracy of SSVEP asynchronous state recognition. Furthermore, addressing the control needs of disabled individuals in multitasking scenarios, a brain-machine fusion system based on SSVEP-BCI asynchronous cooperative control was developed. This system enabled the collaborative control of wearable manipulator and robotic arm, where the robotic arm acts as a "third hand", offering significant advantages in complex environments. The experimental results showed that using the SSVEP asynchronous control algorithm and brain-computer fusion system proposed in this paper could assist users to complete multitasking cooperative operations. The average accuracy of user intent recognition in online control experiments was 93.0%, which provides a theoretical and practical basis for the practical application of the asynchronous SSVEP-BCI system.

Stroke is an acute cerebrovascular disease in which sudden interruption of blood supply to the brain or rupture of cerebral blood vessels cause damage to brain cells and consequently impair the patient's motor and cognitive abilities. A novel rehabilitation training model integrating brain-computer interface (BCI) and virtual reality (VR) not only promotes the functional activation of brain networks, but also provides immersive and interesting contextual feedback for patients. In this paper, we designed a hand rehabilitation training system integrating multi-sensory stimulation feedback, BCI and VR, which guides patients' motor imaginations through the tasks of the virtual scene, acquires patients' motor intentions, and then carries out human-computer interactions under the virtual scene. At the same time, haptic feedback is incorporated to further increase the patients' proprioceptive sensations, so as to realize the hand function rehabilitation training based on the multi-sensory stimulation feedback of vision, hearing, and haptic senses. In this study, we compared and analyzed the differences in power spectral density of different frequency bands within the EEG signal data before and after the incorporation of haptic feedback, and found that the motor brain area was significantly activated after the incorporation of haptic feedback, and the power spectral density of the motor brain area was significantly increased in the high gamma frequency band. The results of this study indicate that the rehabilitation training of patients with the VR-BCI hand function enhancement rehabilitation system incorporating multi-sensory stimulation can accelerate the two-way facilitation of sensory and motor conduction pathways, thus accelerating the rehabilitation process.

Motor imagery is often used in the fields of sports training and neurorehabilitation for its advantages of being highly targeted, easy to learn, and requiring no special equipment, and has become a major research paradigm in cognitive neuroscience. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), an emerging neuromodulation technique, modulates cortical excitability, which in turn affects functions such as locomotion. However, it is unclear whether tDCS has a positive effect on motor imagery task states. In this paper, 16 young healthy subjects were included, and the electroencephalogram (EEG) signals and near-infrared spectrum (NIRS) signals of the subjects were collected when they were performing motor imagery tasks before and after receiving tDCS, and the changes in multiscale sample entropy (MSE) and haemoglobin concentration were calculated and analyzed during the different tasks. The results found that MSE of task-related brain regions increased, oxygenated haemoglobin concentration increased, and total haemoglobin concentration rose after tDCS stimulation, indicating that tDCS increased the activation of task-related brain regions and had a positive effect on motor imagery. This study may provide some reference value for the clinical study of tDCS combined with motor imagery.

The deep learning-based automatic detection of epilepsy electroencephalogram (EEG), which can avoid the artificial influence, has attracted much attention, and its effectiveness mainly depends on the deep neural network model. In this paper, an attention-based multi-scale residual network (AMSRN) was proposed in consideration of the multiscale, spatio-temporal characteristics of epilepsy EEG and the information flow among channels, and it was combined with multiscale principal component analysis (MSPCA) to realize the automatic epilepsy detection. Firstly, MSPCA was used for noise reduction and feature enhancement of original epilepsy EEG. Then, we designed the structure and parameters of AMSRN. Among them, the attention module (AM), multiscale convolutional module (MCM), spatio-temporal feature extraction module (STFEM) and classification module (CM) were applied successively to signal reexpression with attention weighted mechanism as well as extraction, fusion and classification for multiscale and spatio-temporal features. Based on the Children's Hospital Boston-Massachusetts Institute of Technology ( CHB-MIT) public dataset, the AMSRN model achieved good results in sensitivity (98.56%), F1 score (98.35%), accuracy (98.41%) and precision (98.43%). The results show that AMSRN can make good use of brain network information flow caused by seizures to enhance the difference among channels, and effectively capture the multiscale and spatio-temporal features of EEG to improve the performance of epilepsy detection.

Emotion recognition refers to the process of determining and identifying an individual's current emotional state by analyzing various signals such as voice, facial expressions, and physiological indicators etc. Using electroencephalogram (EEG) signals and virtual reality (VR) technology for emotion recognition research helps to better understand human emotional changes, enabling applications in areas such as psychological therapy, education, and training to enhance people's quality of life. However, there is a lack of comprehensive review literature summarizing the combined researches of EEG signals and VR environments for emotion recognition. Therefore, this paper summarizes and synthesizes relevant research from the past five years. Firstly, it introduces the relevant theories of VR and EEG signal emotion recognition. Secondly, it focuses on the analysis of emotion induction, feature extraction, and classification methods in emotion recognition using EEG signals within VR environments. The article concludes by summarizing the research's application directions and providing an outlook on future development trends, aiming to serve as a reference for researchers in related fields.

The electroencephalogram (EEG) signal is the key signal carrier of the brain-computer interface (BCI) system. The EEG data collected by the whole-brain electrode arrangement is conducive to obtaining higher information representation. Personalized electrode layout, while ensuring the accuracy of EEG signal decoding, can also shorten the calibration time of BCI and has become an important research direction. This paper reviews the EEG signal channel selection methods in recent years, conducts a comparative analysis of the combined effects of different channel selection methods and different classification algorithms, obtains the commonly used channel combinations in motor imagery, P300 and other paradigms in BCI, and explains the application scenarios of the channel selection method in different paradigms are discussed, in order to provide stronger support for a more accurate and portable BCI system.

In order to fully explore the neural oscillatory coupling characteristics of patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), this paper analyzed and compared the strength of the coupling characteristics for 28 MCI patients and 21 normal subjects under six different-frequency combinations. The results showed that the difference in the global phase synchronization index of cross-frequency coupling under δ-θ rhythm combination was statistically significant in the MCI group compared with the normal control group ( P = 0.025, d = 0.398). To further validate this coupling feature, this paper proposed an optimized convolutional neural network model that incorporated a time-frequency data enhancement module and batch normalization layers to prevent overfitting while enhancing the robustness of the model. Based on this optimized model, with the phase locking value matrix of δ-θ rhythm combination as the single input feature, the diagnostic accuracy of MCI patients was (95.49 ± 4.15)%, sensitivity and specificity were (93.71 ± 7.21)% and (97.50 ± 5.34)%, respectively. The results showed that the characteristics of the phase locking value matrix under the combination of δ-θ rhythms can adequately reflect the cognitive status of MCI patients, which is helpful to assist the diagnosis of MCI.

There are some limitations in the localization of epileptogenic zone commonly used by human eyes to identify abnormal discharges of intracranial electroencephalography in epilepsy. However, at present, the accuracy of the localization of epileptogenic zone by extracting intracranial electroencephalography features needs to be further improved. As a new method using dynamic network model, neural fragility has potential application value in the localization of epileptogenic zone. In this paper, the neural fragility analysis method was used to analyze the stereoelectroencephalography signals of 35 seizures in 20 patients, and then the epileptogenic zone electrodes were classified using the random forest model, and the classification results were compared with the time-frequency characteristics of six different frequency bands extracted by short-time Fourier transform. The results showed that the area under curve (AUC) of epileptic focus electrodes based on time-frequency analysis was 0.870 (delta) to 0.956 (high gamma), and its classification accuracy increased with the increase of frequency band, while the AUC by using neural fragility could reach 0.957. After fusing the neural fragility and the time-frequency characteristics of the γ and high γ band, the AUC could be further increased to 0.969, which was improved on the original basis. This paper verifies the effectiveness of neural fragility in identifying epileptogenic zone, and provides a theoretical reference for its further clinical application.

Attention level evaluation refers to the evaluation of people's attention level through observation or experimental testing, and its research results have great application value in education and teaching, intelligent driving, medical health and other fields. With its objective reliability and security, electroencephalogram signals have become one of the most important technical means to analyze and express attention level. At present, there is little review literature that comprehensively summarize the application of electroencephalogram signals in the field of attention evaluation. To this end, this paper first summarizes the research progress on attention evaluation; then the important methods for electroencephalogram attention evaluation are analyzed, including data preprocessing, feature extraction and selection, attention evaluation methods, etc.; finally, the shortcomings of the current development in the field of electroencephalogram attention evaluation are discussed, and the future development trend is prospected, to provide research references for researchers in related fields.

The brain-computer interface (BCI) based on motor imagery electroencephalography (MI-EEG) enables direct information interaction between the human brain and external devices. In this paper, a multi-scale EEG feature extraction convolutional neural network model based on time series data enhancement is proposed for decoding MI-EEG signals. First, an EEG signals augmentation method was proposed that could increase the information content of training samples without changing the length of the time series, while retaining its original features completely. Then, multiple holistic and detailed features of the EEG data were adaptively extracted by multi-scale convolution module, and the features were fused and filtered by parallel residual module and channel attention. Finally, classification results were output by a fully connected network. The application experimental results on the BCI Competition IV 2a and 2b datasets showed that the proposed model achieved an average classification accuracy of 91.87% and 87.85% for the motor imagery task, respectively, which had high accuracy and strong robustness compared with existing baseline models. The proposed model does not require complex signals pre-processing operations and has the advantage of multi-scale feature extraction, which has high practical application value.

Electroencephalogram ( EEG) is characterized by high temporal resolution, and various EEG analysis methods have developed rapidly in recent years. The EEG microstate analysis method can be used to study the changes of the brain in the millisecond scale, and can also present the distribution of EEG signals in the topological level, thus reflecting the discontinuous and nonlinear characteristics of the whole brain. After more than 30 years of enrichment and improvement, EEG microstate analysis has penetrated into many research fields related to brain science. In this paper, the basic principles of EEG microstate analysis methods are summarized, and the changes of characteristic parameters of microstates, the relationship between microstates and brain functional networks as well as the main advances in the application of microstate feature extraction and classification in brain diseases and brain cognition are systematically described, hoping to provide some references for researchers in this field.

The research shows that personality assessment can be achieved by regression model based on electroencephalogram (EEG). Most of existing researches use event-related potential or power spectral density for personality assessment, which can only represent the brain information of a single region. But some research shows that human cognition is more dependent on the interaction of brain regions. In addition, due to the distribution difference of EEG features among subjects, the trained regression model can not get accurate results of cross subject personality assessment. In order to solve the problem, this research proposes a personality assessment method based on EEG functional connectivity and domain adaption. This research collected EEG data from 45 normal people under different emotional pictures (positive, negative and neutral). Firstly, the coherence of 59 channels in 5 frequency bands was taken as the original feature set. Then the feature-based domain adaptation was used to map the feature to a new feature space. It can reduce the distribution difference between training and test set in the new feature space, so as to reduce the distribution difference between subjects. Finally, the support vector regression model was trained and tested based on the transformed feature set by leave-one-out cross-validation. What's more, this paper compared the methods used in previous researches. The results showed that the method proposed in this paper improved the performance of regression model and obtained better personality assessment results. This research provides a new method for personality assessment.

Rapid serial visual presentation-brain computer interface (RSVP-BCI) is the most popular technology in the early discover task based on human brain. This algorithm can obtain the rapid perception of the environment by human brain. Decoding brain state based on single-trial of multichannel electroencephalogram (EEG) recording remains a challenge due to the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and nonstationary. To solve the problem of low classification accuracy of single-trial in RSVP-BCI, this paper presents a new feature extraction algorithm which uses principal component analysis (PCA) and common spatial pattern (CSP) algorithm separately in spatial domain and time domain, creating a spatial-temporal hybrid CSP-PCA (STHCP) algorithm. By maximizing the discrimination distance between target and non-target, the feature dimensionality was reduced effectively. The area under the curve (AUC) of STHCP algorithm is higher than that of the three benchmark algorithms (SWFP, CSP and PCA) by 17.9%, 22.2% and 29.2%, respectively. STHCP algorithm provides a new method for target detection.

Sleep stage classification is a necessary fundamental method for the diagnosis of sleep diseases, which has attracted extensive attention in recent years. Traditional methods for sleep stage classification, such as manual marking methods and machine learning algorithms, have the limitations of low efficiency and defective generalization. Recently, deep neural networks have shown improved results by the capability of learning complex pattern in the sleep data. However, these models ignore the intra-temporal sequential information and the correlation among all channels in each segment of the sleep data. To solve these problems, a hybrid attention temporal sequential network model is proposed in this paper, choosing recurrent neural network to replace traditional convolutional neural network, and extracting temporal features of polysomnography from the perspective of time. Furthermore, intra-temporal attention mechanism and channel attention mechanism are adopted to achieve the fusion of the intra-temporal representation and the fusion of channel-correlated representation. And then, based on recurrent neural network and inter-temporal attention mechanism, this model further realized the fusion of inter-temporal contextual representation. Finally, the end-to-end automatic sleep stage classification is accomplished according to the above hybrid representation. This paper evaluates the proposed model based on two public benchmark sleep datasets downloaded from open-source website, which include a number of polysomnography. Experimental results show that the proposed model could achieve better performance compared with ten state-of-the-art baselines. The overall accuracy of sleep stage classification could reach 0.801, 0.801 and 0.717, respectively. Meanwhile, the macro average F1-scores of the proposed model could reach 0.752, 0.728 and 0.700. All experimental results could demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model.

Electroencephalography (EEG) signals are strongly correlated with human emotions. The importance of nodes in the emotional brain network provides an effective means to analyze the emotional brain mechanism. In this paper, a new ranking method of node importance, weighted K -order propagation number method, was used to design and implement a classification algorithm for emotional brain networks. Firstly, based on DEAP emotional EEG data, a cross-sample entropy brain network was constructed, and the importance of nodes in positive and negative emotional brain networks was sorted to obtain the feature matrix under multi-threshold scales. Secondly, feature extraction and support vector machine (SVM) were used to classify emotion. The classification accuracy was 83.6%. The results show that it is effective to use the weighted K -order propagation number method to extract the importance characteristics of brain network nodes for emotion classification, which provides a new means for feature extraction and analysis of complex networks.

The research on brain functional mechanism and cognitive status based on brain network has the vital significance. According to a time-frequency method, partial directed coherence (PDC), for measuring directional interactions over time and frequency from scalp-recorded electroencephalogram (EEG) signals, this paper proposed dynamic PDC (dPDC) method to model the brain network for motor imagery. The parameters attributes (out-degree, in-degree, clustering coefficient and eccentricity) of effective network for 9 subjects were calculated based on dataset from BCI competitions IV in 2008, and then the interaction between different locations for the network character and significance of motor imagery was analyzed. The clustering coefficients for both groups were higher than those of the random network and the path length was close to that of random network. These experimental results show that the effective network has a small world property. The analysis of the network parameter attributes for the left and right hands verified that there was a significant difference on ROI2 ( P = 0.007) and ROI3 ( P = 0.002) regions for out-degree. The information flows of effective network based dPDC algorithm among different brain regions illustrated the active regions for motor imagery mainly located in fronto-central regions (ROI2 and ROI3) and parieto-occipital regions (ROI5 and ROI6). Therefore, the effective network based dPDC algorithm can be effective to reflect the change of imagery motor, and can be used as a practical index to research neural mechanisms.

This paper aims to realize the decoding of single trial motor imagery electroencephalogram (EEG) signal by extracting and classifying the optimized features of EEG signal. In the classification and recognition of multi-channel EEG signals, there is often a lack of effective feature selection strategies in the selection of the data of each channel and the dimension of spatial filters. In view of this problem, a method combining sparse idea and greedy search (GS) was proposed to improve the feature extraction of common spatial pattern (CSP). The improved common spatial pattern could effectively overcome the problem of repeated selection of feature patterns in the feature vector space extracted by the traditional method, and make the extracted features have more obvious characteristic differences. Then the extracted features were classified by Fisher linear discriminant analysis (FLDA). The experimental results showed that the classification accuracy obtained by proposed method was 19% higher on average than that of traditional common spatial pattern. And high classification accuracy could be obtained by selecting feature set with small size. The research results obtained in the feature extraction of EEG signals lay the foundation for the realization of motor imagery EEG decoding.

Brain-computer interface (BCI) provides a direct communicating and controlling approach between the brain and surrounding environment, which attracts a wide range of interest in the fields of brain science and artificial intelligence. It is a core to decode the electroencephalogram (EEG) feature in the BCI system. The decoding efficiency highly depends on the feature extraction and feature classification algorithms. In this paper, we first introduce the commonly-used EEG features in the BCI system. Then we introduce the basic classical algorithms and their advanced versions used in the BCI system. Finally, we present some new BCI algorithms proposed in recent years. We hope this paper can spark fresh thinking for the research and development of high-performance BCI system.

Event-related desynchronization (ERD) is the basic feature of electroencephalogram (EEG), and the brain-computer interface based on motor imagery (MI-BCI) with the foundation of the analysis of ERD is of great significance in motor function recovery. The valid ERD characteristics extracted from EEG are the key to the performance of the BCI, so the study of which kind of stimulation mode can prompt subjects to generate more obvious characteristics of ERD is crucial. Four different stimulation modes are designed in this paper, and the effects of motion imagery tasks under static text stimulation, grip video stimulation, serial motion video stimulation of fingers as well as serial motion video stimulation of fingers with sound on the characteristics of ERD are analyzed. Combining the analysis of time-frequency spectrum, the power spectral density curve, ERD value and brain topographic map, it is shown that the ERD under serial motion video stimulation of fingers and serial motion video stimulation of fingers with sound modes is much stronger and has wider range of activation, and the BCI based on the analysis of ERD will have a better effect on practical application. As a result, the recognition and acceptance of the users of BCI system are improved in some extent.

The automatic classification of epileptic electroencephalogram(EEG)is significant in the diagnosis and therapy of epilepsy.A classification algorithm for epileptic EEG based on wavelet multiscale analysis and extreme learning machine(ELM)is proposed in this paper.Firstly,wavelet multiscale analysis is applied to the original EEG to extract its sub-bands.Then,two nonlinear methods,i.e.Hurst exponent(Hurst)and sample entropy(SamEn)are used to the feature extraction of EEG and its sub-bands.Finally,ELM algorithm is employed in epileptic EEG classification with the nonlinear features.The proposed method in this paper achieved 99.5% classification accuracy for the discrimination between epileptic ictal and interictal EEG.The result implies that this method has good prospects in the diagnosis and therapy of epilepsy.

The study of complex networks has become a hot research area of electroencephalogram signal.Electroencephalogram time series generated by the network keeps node information of network,so studying the time series from the network can also achieve the purpose of study epileptic electroencephalogram.In this paper,we propose a method to analyze epileptic electroencephalogram based on time series which is based on improved k-nearest neighbor network.The results of the experiment showed that studying power spectrum of time series from network was easier than power spectrum of time series directly generated from the original brain data to distinguish between normal controls and epileptic patients.In addition,studying the clustering coefficient of improved k-nearest neighbor network was able to distinguish between normal persons and patients with epilepsy.This study can provide important reference for the study of epilepsy and clinical diagnosis.

This paper explores a methodology used to discriminate the electroencephalograph(EEG)signals of patients with vegetative state(VS)and those with minimally conscious state(MCS).The model was derived from the EEG data of 33 patients in a calling name stimulation paradigm.The preprocessing algorithm was applied to remove the noises in the EEG data.Two types of features including sample entropy and multiscale entropy were chosen.Multiple kernel support vector machine was investigated to perform the training and classification.The experimental results showed that the alpha rhythm features of EEG signals in severe disorders of consciousness were significant.We achieved the average classification accuracy of 88.24%.It was concluded that the proposed method for the EEG signal classification for VS and MCS patients was effective.The approach in this study may eventually lead to a reliable tool for identifying severe disorder states of consciousness quantitatively.It would also provide the auxiliary basis of clinical assessment for the consciousness disorder degree.

Sleep apnea syndrome(SAS)is a kind of harmful systemic sleep disorder with high incidence,and the pathological mechanism of it is complicated and the diagnosis and treatment are difficult.Mining the characteristic information of SAS from the single or small physiological signal is a hot topic in the research of sleep disorders in recent years.In our study shown in this paper,the detrended fluctuation analysis(DFA)was used to analyze sleep electroencephalogram(EEG)of SAS patients and normal healthy persons based on the non-stationary and nonlinear characteristics.It was found that in both groups,the scaling exponents increased gradually with the deepening of sleep,and in the rapid eye movement(REM)stage,the scaling exponents decreased.The scaling exponents of SAS group were significantly higher than those of the healthy group.The performance of SAS diagnosis based on scaling exponents was evaluated with receiver operator characteristic(ROC)curve.The optimal threshold value 0.81 for the SAS and normal control were obtained,corresponding to the sensitivity 94.4%,specificity 99.2%,and area under curve(AUC)was 0.994.The results show that DFA scaling exponents have a good discrimination power and accuracy for the SAS,which provide a new theoretical basis for SAS diagnosis.

In the present paper,wavelet transform and empirical mode decomposition(EMD)are combined to extracted the features of electroencephalogram(EEG)signal with music intervention,and to achieve a better classification accuracy rate and reliability in emotional assessment in order to provide a support for music therapy.The data were from Database for Emotion Analysis using Physiological Signals(DEAP).Based on wavelet transformα,βandθrhythms were extracted at frontal(F3,F4),temporal(T7,T8)and central regions(C3,C4).Based on the EMD,the intrinsic mode function(IMF)was analyzed and extracted.Furthermore,average energy and amplitude difference of IMF were analyzed and obtained.The support vector machine was used to assess the state of emotion in order to support music therapy.According to this algorithm,the classification accuracy rate could reach 100% between no emotions,positive emotions and negative emotions,which made a 10%improvement between positive and negative emotion recognition.Effective evaluation result between positive and negative emotions was achieved.The states of emotion would influence the effect of music therapy,undoubtedly,the classification accuracy rate increasing of emotional assessment will further help improve the effect of music therapy and provide a better support to the therapy.

Signal classification is a key of brain-computer interface(BCI).In this paper,we present a new method for classifying the electroencephalogram(EEG)signals of which the features are heterogeneous.This method is called wrapped elastic net feature selection and classification.Firstly,we used the joint application of time-domain statistic,power spectral density(PSD),common spatial pattern(CSP)and autoregressive(AR)model to extract high-dimensional fused features of the preprocessed EEG signals.Then we used the wrapped method for feature selection.We fitted the logistic regression model penalized with elastic net on the training data,and obtained the parameter estimation by coordinate descent method.Then we selected best feature subset by using 10-fold cross-validation.Finally,we classified the test sample using the trained model.Data used in the experiment were the EEG data from international BCI CompetitionⅣ.The results showed that the method proposed was suitable for fused feature selection with high-dimension.For identifying EEG signals,it is more effective and faster,and can single out a more relevant subset to obtain a relatively simple model.The average test accuracy reached 81.78%.

In the study of the scalp electroencephalogram(EEG)-based brain-computer interface(BCI),individual differences and complex background noise are two main factors which affect the stability of BCI system.For different subjects,therefore,optimization of BCI system parameters is necessary,including the optimal designing of temporal and spatial filters parameters as well as the classifier parameters.In order to improve the accuracy of BCI system,this paper proposes a new BCI information processing method,which combines the optimization design of independent component analysis spatial filter(ICA-SF)with the multiple sub-band features of EEG signals.The four subjects’ three-class motor imagery EEG(MI-EEG)data collected in different periods were analyzed with the proposed method.Experimental results revealed that,during the inner and outer cross-validation of single subject as well as the subject-to-subject validation,the proposed multiple sub-band method always had higher average classification accuracy compared to those with single-band method,and the maximum difference could achieve 6.08% and5.15%,respectively.

This paper aims to assist the individual clinical diagnosis of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder using electroencephalogram signal detection method.Firstly,in our experiments,we obtained and studied the electroencephalogram signals from fourteen attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder children and sixteen typically developing children during the classic interference control task of Simon-spatial Stroop,and we completed electroencephalogram data preprocessing including filtering,segmentation,removal of artifacts and so on.Secondly,we selected the subset electroencephalogram electrodes using principal component analysis(PCA)method,and we collected the common channels of the optimal electrodes which occurrence rates were more than 90%in each kind of stimulation.We then extracted the latency(200~450ms)mean amplitude features of the common electrodes.Finally,we used the k-nearest neighbor(KNN)classifier based on Euclidean distance and the support vector machine(SVM)classifier based on radial basis kernel function to classify.From the experiment,at the same kind of interference control task,the attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder children showed lower correct response rates and longer reaction time.The N2 emerged in prefrontal cortex while P2 presented in the inferior parietal area when all kinds of stimuli demonstrated.Meanwhile,the children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder exhibited markedly reduced N2 and P2amplitude compared to typically developing children.KNN resulted in better classification accuracy than SVM classifier,and the best classification rate was 89.29%in StI task.The results showed that the electroencephalogram signals were different in the brain regions of prefrontal cortex and inferior parietal cortex between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and typically developing children during the interference control task,which provided a scientific basis for the clinical diagnosis of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder individuals.

The clinical electroencephalogram (EEG) monitoring systems based on personal computer system can not meet the requirements of portability and home usage. The epilepsy patients have to be monitored in hospital for an extended period of time, which imposes a heavy burden on hospitals. In the present study, we designed a portable 16-lead networked monitoring system based on the Android smart phone. The system uses some technologies including the active electrode, the WiFi wireless transmission, the multi-scale permutation entropy (MPE) algorithm, the back-propagation (BP) neural network algorithm, etc. Moreover, the software of Android mobile application can realize the processing and analysis of EEG data, the display of EEG waveform and the alarm of epileptic seizure. The system has been tested on the mobile phones with Android 2. 3 operating system or higher version and the results showed that this software ran accurately and steadily in the detection of epileptic seizure. In conclusion, this paper provides a portable and reliable solution for epileptic seizure monitoring in clinical and home applications.

In order to monitor the emotional state changes of audience on real-time and to adjust the music playlist, we proposed an algorithm framework of an electroencephalogram (EEG) driven personalized affective music recommendation system based on the portable dry electrode shown in this paper. We also further finished a preliminary implementation on the Android platform. We used a two-dimensional emotional model of arousal and valence as the reference, and mapped the EEG data and the corresponding seed songs to the emotional coordinate quadrant in order to establish the matching relationship. Then, Mel frequency cepstrum coefficients were applied to evaluate the similarity between the seed songs and the songs in music library. In the end, during the music playing state, we used the EEG data to identify the audience's emotional state, and played and adjusted the corresponding song playlist based on the established matching relationship.

Common spatial pattern (CSP) is a very popular method for spatial filtering to extract the features from electroencephalogram (EEG) signals, but it may cause serious over-fitting issue. In this paper, after the extraction and recognition of feature, we present a new way in which the recognition results are fused to overcome the over-fitting and improve recognition accuracy. And then a new framework for EEG recognition is proposed by using CSP to extract features from EEG signals, using linear discriminant analysis (LDA) classifiers to identify the user's mental state from such features, and using Choquet fuzzy integral to fuse classifiers results. Brain-computer interface (BCI) competition 2005 data sets IVa was used to validate the framework. The results demonstrated that it effective ly improved recognition and to some extent overcome the over-fitting problem of CSP. It showed the effectiveness of this framework for dealing with EEG.

The research of sleep staging is not only a basis of diagnosing sleep related diseases but also the precondition of evaluating sleep quality, and has important clinical significance. In recent years, the research of automatic sleep staging based on computer has become a hot spot and got some achievements. The basic knowledge of sleep staging and electroencephalogram (EEG) is introduced in this paper. Then, feature extraction and pattern recognition, two key technologies for automatic sleep staging, are discussed in detail. Wavelet transform and Hilbert-Huang transform, two methods for feature extraction, are compared. Artificial neural network and support vector machine (SVM), two methods for pattern recognition are discussed. In the end, the research status of this field is summarized, and development trends of next phase are pointed out.

Sleep electroencephalogram (EEG) is an important index in diagnosing sleep disorders and related diseases. Manual sleep staging is time-consuming and often influenced by subjective factors. Existing automatic sleep staging methods have high complexity and a low accuracy rate. A sleep staging method based on support vector machines (SVM) and feature selection using single channel EEG single is proposed in this paper. Thirty-eight features were extracted from the single channel EEG signal. Then based on the feature selection method F-Score's definition, it was extended to multiclass with an added eliminate factor in order to find proper features, which were used as SVM classifier inputs. The eliminate factor was adopted to reduce the negative interaction of features to the result. Research on the F-Score with an added eliminate factor was further accomplished with the data from a standard open source database and the results were compared with none feature selection and standard F-Score feature selection. The results showed that the present method could effectively improve the sleep staging accuracy and reduce the computation time.

The impulsive electroencephalograph (EEG) noises in evoked potential (EP) signals is very strong, usually with a heavy tail and infinite variance characteristics like the acceleration noise impact, hypoxia and etc., as shown in other special tests. The noises can be described by a stable distribution model. In this paper, Wigner-Ville distribution (WVD) and pseudo Wigner-Ville distribution (PWVD) time-frequency distribution based on the fractional lower order moment are presented to be improved. We got fractional lower order WVD (FLO-WVD) and fractional lower order PWVD (FLO-PWVD) time-frequency distribution which could be suitable for a stable distribution process. We also proposed the fractional lower order spatial time-frequency distribution matrix (FLO-STFM) concept. Therefore, combining with time-frequency underdetermined blind source separation (TF-UBSS), we proposed a new fractional lower order spatial time-frequency underdetermined blind source separation (FLO-TF-UBSS) which can work in a stable distribution environment. We used the FLO-TF-UBSS algorithm to extract EPs. Simulations showed that the proposed method could effectively extract EPs in EEG noises, and the separated EPs and EEG signals based on FLO-TF-UBSS were almost the same as the original signal, but blind separation based on TF-UBSS had certain deviation. The correlation coefficient of the FLO-TF-UBSS algorithm was higher than the TF-UBSS algorithm when generalized signal-to-noise ratio (GSNR) changed from 10 dB to 30 dB and a varied from 1. 06 to 1. 94, and was approximately e- qual to 1. Hence, the proposed FLO-TF-UBSS method might be better than the TF-UBSS algorithm based on second order for extracting EP signal under an EEG noise environment.

Traditional sample entropy fails to quantify inherent long-range dependencies among real data. Multiscale sample entropy (MSE) can detect intrinsic correlations in data, but it is usually used in univariate data. To generalize this method for multichannel data, we introduced multivariate multiscale entropy into multiscale signals as a reflection of the nonlinear dynamic correlation. But traditional multivariate multiscale entropy has a large quantity of computation and costs a large period of time and space for more channel system, so that it can not reflect the correlation between variables timely and accurately. In this paper, therefore, an improved multivariate multiscale entropy embeds on all variables at the same time, instead of embedding on a single variable as in the traditional methods, to solve the memory overflow while the number of channels rise, and it is more suitable for the actual multivariate signal analysis. The method was tested in simulation data and Bonn epilepsy dataset. The simulation results showed that the proposed method had a good performance to distinguish correlation data. Bonn epilepsy dataset experiment also showed that the method had a better classification accuracy among the five data set, especially with an accuracy of 100% for data collection of Z and S.

To explore the relationship between the drug-seeking behavior, motivation of conditioned place preference (CPP) rats and the frontal association cortex (FrA) electroencephalogram (EEG) sample entropy, we in this paper present our studies on the FrA EEG sample entropy of control group rats and CPP group rats, respectively. We invested different behavior in four situations of the rat activities, i. e. rats were staying in black chamber of videoed boxes, those staying in white chamber of videoed boxes, those shuttling between black-white chambers and those shuttling between white-black chambers. The experimental results showed that, compared with the control group rats, the FrA EEG sample entropy of CPP rats staying in black chamber of video box and shuttling between white-black chambers had no significant difference. However, sample entropy is significantly smaller (P < 0.01) when heroin-induced group rats stayed in white chamber of video box and shuttled between black-white chambers. Consequently, the drug-seeking behavior and motivation of CPP rats correlated closely with the EEG sample entropy changes.

Brain-computer interface (BCI) systems identify brain signals through extracting features from them. In view of the limitations of the autoregressive model feature extraction method and the traditional principal component analysis to deal with the multichannel signals, this paper presents a multichannel feature extraction method that multivariate autoregressive (MVAR) model combined with the multiple-linear principal component analysis (MPCA), and used for magnetoencephalography (MEG) signals and electroencephalograph (EEG) signals recognition. Firstly, we calculated the MVAR model coefficient matrix of the MEG/EEG signals using this method, and then reduced the dimensions to a lower one, using MPCA. Finally, we recognized brain signals by Bayes Classifier. The key innovation we introduced in our investigation showed that we extended the traditional single-channel feature extraction method to the case of multi-channel one. We then carried out the experiments using the data groups of IV-III and IV - I. The experimental results proved that the method proposed in this paper was feasible.

In the present paper, the contribution of the largest principal component and the number of principal component needed for accumulative contribution 95% are selected as indices of electroencephalogram (EEG) in mental fatigue state in order to investigate the relationship between these parameters and mental fatigue. The experimental results showed that the contribution of the largest principal component of EEG signals increased in the prefrontal, frontal and central areas, while the number of principal component needed for accumulative contribution decreased by 95% with the increasing mental fatigue level. The parameters of singular system of EEG signals can be regarded as useful features for the estimation of mental fatigue and have larger application value in the study of mental fatigue.

Using electroencephalogram (EEG) signal to control external devices has always been the research focus in the field of brain-computer interface (BCI). This is especially significant for those disabilities who have lost capacity of movements. In this paper, the P300-based BCI and the microcontroller-based wireless radio frequency (RF) technology are utilized to design a smart home control system, which can be used to control household appliances, lighting system, and security devices directly. Experiment results showed that the system was simple, reliable and easy to be populirised.

Neurofeedback, as an alternative treatment method of behavioral medicine, is a technique which translates the electroencephalogram (EEG) signals to styles as sounds or animation to help people understand their own physical status and learn to enhance or suppress certain EEG signals to regulate their own brain functions after several repeated trainings. This paper develops a neurofeedback system on the foundation of brain-computer interface technique. The EEG features are extracted through real-time signal process and then translated to feedback information. Two feedback screens are designed for relaxation training and attention training individually. The veracity and feasibility of the neurofeedback system are validated through system simulation and preliminary experiment.

Feature extraction is a very crucial step in P300-based brain-computer interface (BCI) and independent component analysis (ICA) is a suitable P300 feature extraction method. But at present the convergence performance of the general ICA iteration methods are not very satisfactory. In this paper, a method based on quantum particle swarm optimizer (QPSO) algorithm and ICA technique is put forward for P300 extraction. In this method, quantum computing is used to impel ICA iteration to globally converge faster. It achieved the purpose of extracting P300 rapidly and efficiently. The method was tested on two public datasets of BCI Competition II and III, and a simple linear classifier was employed to classify the extracted P300 features. The recognition accuracy reached 94.4% with 15 times averaged. The results showed that the proposed method could extract P300 rapidly and the extraction effect did not reduce. It provides an experimental basis for further study of real-time BCI system.

The quality of sleep has a great relationship with health and working efficiency. The result of sleep stage classification is an important indicator to measure the quality of sleep, and it is also an important way to diagnose and treat sleep disorders. In this paper, the method of detrended cross-correlation analysis (DCCA) was used to analyze sleep stage classification, sleep electroencephalograph signals, which were extracted from the MIT-BIH Polysomno graphic Database randomly. The results showed that the average DCCA exponent of the awake period is smaller than that of the first stage of non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleeps. It is well concluded that the method of studying the sleep electroencephalograph with this method is of great significance to improve the quality of sleep, to diagnose and to treat sleep disorders.

Electroencephalogram (EEG) is the primary tool in investigation of the brain science. It is necessary to carry out a deepgoing study into the characteristics and information hidden in EEGs to meet the needs of the clinical research. In this paper, we present a wavelet-nonlinear dynamic methodology for analysis of nonlinear characteristic of EEGs and delta, theta, alpha, and beta sub-bands. We therefore studied the effectiveness of correlation dimension (CD), largest Lyapunov exponen, and approximate entropy (ApEn) in differentiation between the interictal EEG and ictal EEG based on statistical significance of the differences. The results showed that the nonlinear dynamic char acteristic of EEG and EEG subbands could be used as effective identification statistics in detecting seizures.

Electroencephalogram (EEG) classification for brain-computer interface (BCI) is a new way of realizing human-computer interreaction. In this paper the application of semi-supervised sparse representation classifier algorithms based on help training to EEG classification for BCI is reported. Firstly, the correlation information of the unlabeled data is obtained by sparse representation classifier and some data with high correlation selected. Secondly, the boundary information of the selected data is produced by discriminative classifier, which is the Fisher linear classifier. The final unlabeled data with high confidence are selected by a criterion containing the information of distance and direction. We applied this novel method to the three benchmark datasets, which were BCI I, BCI II&#95;IV and USPS. The classification rate were 97%, 82% and 84.7%, respectively. Moreover the fastest arithmetic rate was just about 0. 2 s. The classification rate and efficiency results of the novel method are both better than those of S3VM and SVM, proving that the proposed method is effective.

Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals provide an objective physiological index for the identification of the driver's fatigue state. It is very important to choose appropriate channels and EEG signal features adaptively due to the features varying with different subjects and time. A support vector machine (SVM) based increasing feature selection algorithm for driving fatigue EEG classification is presented in this paper. The algorithm is a method to select EEG channels and features for driving fatigue adaptively in an ascending order. We can select the optimal feature each time from the remaining candidate features using the optimized SVM model minimum error rate as the index. The experimental calculation has characteristics of using 16 electrode channels which cover the whole head in the main area, of selecting 208 candidate features as the initial set, of selecting to the EEG data calculation recorded in 5 different time periods of a subject, and of choosing error rate of 2% as the algorithm termination condition. The selected features and models, therefore, can reach a high level of classification and generalization ability.

In this paper, a new method combining wavelet packet transform and multivariate multiscale entropy for the classification of epilepsy EEG signals is introduced. Firstly, the original EEG signals are decomposed at multi-scales with the wavelet packet transform, and the wavelet packet coefficients of the required frequency bands are extracted. Secondly, the wavelet packet coefficients are processed with multivariate multiscale entropy algorithm. Finally, the EEG data are classified by support vector machines (SVM). The experimental results on the international public Bonn epilepsy EEG dataset show that the proposed method can efficiently extract epileptic features and the accuracy of classification result is satisfactory.

EEG recordings contain valuable physiological and pathological information in the process of seizure. The dynamic changes of brain electrical activity provide foundation and possibility for research and development of automatic detection system about epilepsy. In this paper, a nonlinear dynamic method is presented for analysis of the nonlinear dynamic characteristics of EEGs and delta, theta, alpha, and beta sub-bands of EEGs based on wavelet transform. The extracted feature is used as the input vector of a support vector machine (SVM) to construct classifiers. The results showed that the classification accuracy of SVM classifier based on nonlinear dynamic characteristics to classify the EEG into interictal EEGs and ictal EEGs reached 90% or higher. The support vector machine has good generalization in detecting the epilepsy EEG signals as a nonlinear classifier.

This paper proposed a morphological component analysis (MCA) method, which is based on sparse representation, to detect the spike wave in electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. It takes the advantage of MCA being able to extract the background waves and the spike waves from the EEG signals, respectively,as the dictionaries and chooses the discrete cosine transform (DCT) and the daubechies order 4 wavelet (db4) transformation as the dictionaries of MCA to detect the spike waves from the epileptic EEG. The experiment results showed that the MCA could detect epileptic spike waves in EEG signals very effectively, and it yielded high selectivity of 89.01% and sensitivity of 90.71%. As a feature extraction/decomposition algorithm, MCA can be used to extract the spike waves from EEG signals.

In order to choose a fast and efficient real-time method in beta wave information extraction, we compared the result and the efficiency of the information separation of both fast Fourier transform (FFT) and wavelet transform of EEG beta band in the present paper. Our work provides the basis for the EEG data come from the real-time health assessment of 3DTV. We took the EEGs of 5 healthy volunteers before, after and during the process of watching 3DTV and meanwhile recorded the results. The trends of the relative energy and the time cost of two methods were compared by using both the FFT and wavelet packet transform (WPT) which was to extract the feature of EEG beta wave. It demonstrated that (1) Results of the two methods were consistent in the trends of watching 3DTV; (2) Results of the differences in two methods were consistent before and after watching 3DTV; (3) FFT took less time than the wavelet transform in the same case. It is concluded that the results of both FFT and Wavelet transform are consistent in feature extraction of EEG, and a fast method to work with the large quantities of EEG data obtained in the experiments can be offered in the future.

Using human electroencephalogram (EEG) to control external devices in order to achieve a variety of functions has been focus of the field of brain-computer interface (BCI) research. P300 is experiments which stimulate the eye to produce EEG by using letters flashing, and then identify the corresponding letters. In this paper, some improvements based on the P300 experiments were made??. Firstly, the matrix of flashing letters were modified into words which represent a certain sense. Secondly, the BCI2000 procedures were added with the corresponding source code. Thirdly, the smart car systems were designed using the radiofrequency signal. Finally it was realized that the evoked potentials were used to control the state of the smart car.

This paper introduces the characteristics of the Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT), and studies the classification of movement imagery EEG based on the HHT method and BP neural network. After preprocessed, the movement imagery EEG data were descomposed with empirical mode decomposition (EMD) into a series of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). Then the low frequency IMFs were removed, and the rest of IMFs were conducted by Hilbert transform to get Hilbert marginal spectrum. The marginal spectrum subtracted values between the channal C3 and channal C4 were selected as the original features which were then decreased the dimension by the principal components analysis so as to be jointed with EEG complexity to construct the feature vector. The BP neural network was utilized to classify the EEG pattern of left and right hand motor imagery. The brain computer interface (BCI) competition II data set III was selected to carry out the discrimination, and the classification accuracy rate is up to 87.14%, which is a comparably good result and proves HHT to be a feasible and effective method on EEG analysis.
