Pulp and paper wood feedstocks have been previously implicated as a source of chemicals with the ability to interact with or disrupt key neuroendocrine endpoints important in the control of reproduction. We tested nine Canadian conifers commonly used in pulp and paper production as well as 16 phytochemicals that have been observed in various pulp and paper mill effluent streams for their ability to interact in vitro with the enzymes monoamine oxidase (MAO), glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD), and GABA-transaminase (GABA-T), and bind to the benzodiazepine-binding site of the GABA(A) receptor (GABA(A)-BZD). These neuroendocrine endpoints are also important targets for treatment of neurological disorders such as anxiety, epilepsy, or depression. MAO and GAD were inhibited by various conifer extracts of different polarities, including major feedstocks such as balsam fir, black spruce, and white spruce. MAO was selectively stimulated or inhibited by many of the tested phytochemicals, with inhibition observed by a group of phenylpropenes (e.g. isoeugenol and vanillin). Selective GAD inhibition was also observed, with all of the resin acids tested being inhibitory. GABA(A)-BZD ligand displacement was also observed. We compiled a table identifying which of these phytochemicals have been described in each of the species tested here. Given the diversity of conifer species and plant chemicals with these specific neuroactivities, it is reasonable to propose that MAO and GAD inhibition reported in effluents is phytochemical in origin. We propose disruption of these neuroendocrine endpoints as a possible mechanism of reproductive inhibition, and also identify an avenue for potential research and sourcing of conifer-derived neuroactive natural products., (© 2013.)

Prompt and accurate monitoring of cyanobacterial blooms is essential for public health management and understanding aquatic ecosystem dynamics. Remote sensing, in particular satellite observations, presents a good alternative for continuous monitoring. This study employs multispectral images from the Sentinel-2 constellation alongside ERA5-Land to enable broad-scale data acquisition. A simple deep convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture was proposed to analyze cyanobacteria (CB) concentration dynamics in Pigeon Lake, Canada, over five years. The model achieved an R 2 value of 0.81 and an RMSE score of 0.03 for the training set and 0.15 for the testing set, demonstrating high predictive accuracy. Using the Local Getis-Ord statistic, we identified and analyzed trends in hot and cold spots under the null hypothesis that such spots are randomly distributed, observing changes in their distribution and the median CB concentration in hot spots over time. Additionally, a Kolmogorov-Arnold Network (KAN) and dense neural networks (NN) with a single hidden layer were trained to classify sections of the lake shoreline into hot and no hot spots using the Dynamic World dataset within a 500m radius of the lake. Climate conditions throughout the 21st century across much of western Canada's boreal forest have been drier than normal leading to significant impacts on forest productivity and tree growth. Determining the limiting factors of radial growth in common boreal tree species under current and future conditions is crucial to reconcile how they will continue to respond to climate change. In this study, we used a network of 26 white spruce tree-ring chronologies south of its natural range as an artificially constructed trailing edge to assess climate-growth relationships and limiting factors by identifying seasonal climate relationships and using the Vaganov-Shashkin Lite (VS-Lite) model, respectively. Analysis revealed that white spruce in the study region is positively correlated to precipitation and negatively associated with temperature from the current and previous growing seasons. VS-Lite showed that moisture was the primary limiting factor in growth across the entire study area. The modelled radial growth from the VS-Lite model showed moderate success (14 of 26 site models were significant) and was more variable than measured tree-ring index values. The model systematically overestimated drought-related impacts on radial growth, especially during the middle portion of the growth season (June-August) indicating white spruce likely employs a conservative approach to carbohydrate storage as the region is much more susceptible to moisture deficits. Emerging contaminants can be natural or synthetic materials, as well as materials of a chemical, or biological origin; these materials are typically not controlled or monitored in the environment. Canada is home to nearly 7 % of the world's renewable water supply and a wide range of different kinds of water systems, including the Great Lake, rivers, canals, gulfs, and estuaries. Although the majority of these pollutants are present in trace amounts (μg/L - ng/L concentrations), several studies have reported their detrimental impact on both human health and the biota. In Canadian aquatic environments, concentrations of pharmaceuticals (as high as 115 μg/L), pesticides (as high as 1.95 μg/L), bioavailable heavy metals like dissolved mercury (as high as 135 ng/L), and hydrocarbon/crude oil spills (as high as 4.5 million liters) have been documented. Biological threats such as genetic materials of the contagious SARS-CoV-2 virus have been reported in the provinces of Québec, Ontario, Saskatchewan and Manitoba provinces, as well as in the Nunavut territory, with a need for more holistic research. These toxins and emerging pollutants are associated with nefarious short and long-term health effects, with the potential for bioaccumulation in the environment. Hence, this Canadian-focused report provides the footprints for water and environmental sustainability, in light of this emerging threat to the environment and society. Several remediation pathways/tools that have been explored by Canadian researchers, existing challenges and prospects are also discussed. Accurate crop yield predictions are crucial for farmers and policymakers. Despite the widespread use of ensemble machine learning (ML) models in computer science, their application in crop yield prediction remains relatively underexplored. This study, conducted in Canada, aims to assess the potential of five distinct ensemble ML models-Adaptive Boosting (AdaBoost), Gradient Boosting Machine (GBM), XGBoost, LightGBM, and Random Forest (RF)-in predicting crop yields chosen for their ability to manage complex datasets and their strong performance potential. The study integrated various factors, including climate variables, satellite-derived vegetation indices, soil characteristics, and honeybee census data. Data preparation comprised two main steps: first, climate variables were interpolated and averaged for croplands in ArcGIS Pro, along with averaging vegetation indices and soil characteristics. Honeybee census data was also incorporated. Second, the data was organized in Python to create a structured format for models' input. The models' accuracy was assessed using Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), R-squared, and Mean Absolute Error (MAE). XGBoost emerged as the most accurate model, with the lowest MAE (68.70 for canola and 39.47 for soybeans), lowest RMSE (119.48 for canola and 102.39 for soybeans), and highest R-squared values (0.95 for canola and 0.96 for soybeans) on the test dataset. The study also assessed crop yields under various climate change scenarios, finding minimal variations across the scenarios, but significant negative impacts on canola and soybean yields across Canada. Honeybee colonies were identified as the most influential factor on crop yields, contributing 52.34 % to canola and 57.18 % to soybean yields. This research provides detailed crop yield maps of canola and soybeans at the Census Consolidated Subdivisions (CCS) level across Canada's agricultural landscape, offering valuable forecasts for localized decision-making. Ultraviolet (UV) absorbents and industrial antioxidants are two groups of plastic-derived contaminants of emerging environmental concern. However, their distribution and fate are poorly understood in Arctic wildlife. In the present study, 16 UV absorbents (10 benzotriazole UV stabilizers (BZT-UVs) and 6 organic UV filters (UVFs)) and 7 industrial antioxidants (6 aromatic secondary amines (Ar-SAs) and 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol (26DTBP)) were analyzed in the livers of thick-billed murre (Uria lomvia; n = 28), northern fulmar (Fulmarus glacialis; n = 4), black guillemot (Cepphus grylle; n = 11), polar bear (Ursus maritimus; n = 18), beluga whale (Delphinapterus leucas; n = 10), landlocked (n = 25) and sea-run (n = 10) Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) from the Canadian Arctic collected between 2017 and 2021. Compared to industrial antioxidants (median range: ΣAr-SAs: not calculated due to detection frequency < 30 % (NA)-4.06 ng/g, wet weight (ww); 26DTBP: NA-1.91 ng/g ww), UV absorbents (median range: ΣBZT-UVs: NA-8.71 ng/g ww; ΣUVFs: NA-48.3 ng/g ww) generally showed greater concentrations in the liver of these species. Seabirds accumulated higher levels of these contaminants (median range: ΣBZT-UVs: 3.38-8.71 ng/g ww; ΣUVFs: NA-48.3 ng/g ww; ΣAr-SAs: 0.07-4.06 ng/g ww; 26DTBP: NA-1.14 ng/g ww)) than the other groups (median range: ΣBZT-UVs: NA-1.31 ng/g ww; ΣUVFs: NA-4.22 ng/g ww; ΣAr-SAs: NA; 26DTBP: NA-1.91 ng/g ww), suggesting that seabirds may be useful indicator species for future long-term monitoring. The livers of Arctic char in the Canadian Arctic generally contain lower levels of these contaminants than those of freshwater fish in temperate regions. Spatial variations were found in the liver of black guillemots, Hudson Bay polar bears, and landlocked char for some target contaminants, indicating differences in the levels of these contaminants in their surrounding environment or diet. Consumption of liver tissues from these species may expose humans to varying levels of UV absorbents and industrial antioxidants. This study establishes a baseline for future research of the spatial and temporal trends of these contaminants in Arctic species. It provides the basis for elucidating the fate of these contaminants and assessing their adverse effects at environmental-relevant concentrations in the Arctic. The salmon aquaculture industry is an important economic activity established on both the west and east coast of Canada. To control sea lice infestations, in-feed products like emamectin benzoate (EMB) are widely used. Due to its low solubility and persistence EMB can accumulate in marine sediments and be potentially bioavailable to non-target organisms from months to years. The American lobster (Homarus americanus) is a key species in the Northwest Atlantic with high economic and ecological value. It may be exposed to therapeutants considering lobster habitats overlap with aquaculture locations requiring a better understanding of the potential impact of these therapeutants through varied pathways of exposure. In this study, we investigated the exposure of gravid female lobsters to EMB spiked sediment to mimic the likely presence of these females at aquaculture sites for a 10-day period. We completed testing by assessing EMB effects on adult molting and quality, embryo hatching rates, and larval offspring quality and larval molting. Maintaining and improving soil health (SH) is essential for the long-term sustainability and productivity of agriculture, notably in the face of climate change. This study addressed the challenge of selecting appropriate soil indicators, scoring methods, and indexing approaches for SH evaluation under no-till crop rotations. This study aimed to develop minimum datasets (MDS) and assess SH in six crop rotations (denoted as conventional, diversified, high-risk and high-reward, market-driven, pulse-oilseed intensified, and soil health-enhanced rotations) at three sites on the Canadian prairies. Fourteen soil indicators in the total dataset (TDS) were examined, encompassing both chemical (0-7.5 cm depth) and physical (5-10 cm depth) properties. Principal component analysis (PCA) identified MDSs from the TDS. Two scoring [linear (L) and non-linear (NL)] and two SH indexing approaches [additive (A) and weighted additive (WA)] were used to calculate the SH index (SHI). One-way ANOVA evaluated the SHI among crop rotations. The PCA revealed variations in the number of indicators in the MDS across sites, with soil organic carbon, bulk density, macroporosity, and plant-available water capacity as the common indicators for MDS across sites. Other indicators such as particulate organic matter carbon, aggregate stability, field capacity, and microporosity were found to be important, depending on the site. The non-linear weighted additive SH indexing (SHI.NLWA) proved to be the most sensitive and effective for differentiating among crop rotations in the short-term across study sites (R 2  = 0.89-0.94, P < 0.05). Crop rotations significantly influenced SHI, with the diversified and high-risk and high-reward rotations having the highest SHI at Lethbridge and Scott, respectively. Overall, the diversified rotation at Lethbridge and Swift Current, along with the high-risk and high-reward rotation at Scott, exhibited better soil function than other rotations. Shellfish poisonings have posed severe risks to human health globally. The Canadian Shellfish Sanitation Program was established in 1948 to monitor the toxin levels at shellfish harvesting sites along the coast of six provinces in Canada. Domoic acid has been a causal toxin for amnesic shellfish poisoning, and a macro-scale analysis of the temporal and spatial variation of domoic acid along Canada's coast was conducted in this study. We aggregated the toxin levels by week in blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) and soft-shell clam (Mya arenaria) samples, respectively, over a one-year scale. The subsequent application of Functional Principal Component Analysis unveiled that magnitudes of seasonal variation and peaked DA levels around early summer, spring, or mid-fall formed the largest variation in the toxin levels in blue mussels along the coastlines of British Columbia and Prince Edward Island and in soft-shell calms along those of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. In Quebec, the DA levels were low and varied mostly in terms of the overall magnitude from spring to fall. Downstream correlation analyses in British Columbia further discovered that, at most sites, the strongest correlations were negative between precipitation as well as inorganic nutrients (including nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, and silicate) on one side and DA a few weeks afterward on the other. Wastewater-based surveillance (WBS) has shown to be an effective tool in monitoring the spread of SARS-CoV-2 and has helped guide public health actions. Consequently, WBS has expanded to now include the monitoring of mpox virus (MPXV) to contribute to its mitigation efforts. In this study, we demonstrate a unique sample processing and a molecular diagnostic strategy for MPXV detection that can inform on the epidemiological situation of mpox outbreaks through WBS. We conducted WBS for MPXV in 22 Canadian wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) for 14 weeks. Three MPXV qPCR assays were assessed in this study for the detection of MPXV which include the G2R assays (G2R&#95;WA and G2R&#95;G) developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2010, and an in-house-developed assay that we have termed G2R&#95;NML. The G2R&#95;NML assay was designed using reference genomes from the 2022 MPXV outbreak and provides a larger qPCR amplicon size to facilitate Sanger sequencing. Results show that all three assays have similar limits of detection and are able to detect the presence of MPXV in wastewater. The G2R&#95;NML assay produced a significantly greater number of Sanger sequence-confirmed MPXV results compared to the CDC G2R assays. Detection of MPXV was possible where provincial surveillance indicated overall low caseloads, and in some sites forewarning of up to several weeks was observed. In the recent monitoring guidelines released by the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Program's Litter and Microplastic Expert Group, Arctic salmonids were recommended as an important species for monitoring plastics in Arctic ecosystems, with an emphasis on aligning microplastic sampling and analysis methods in Arctic fishes. This recommendation was based on the minimal documentation of microplastics in Northern fishes, especially Arctic salmonids. In response, we worked collaboratively with local partners to quantify and characterize microplastics in Arctic char, Salvelinus alpinus, and their habitats in a commercial fishery near Iqaluktuuttiaq (Cambridge Bay), Nunavut. We sampled Arctic char, surface water, and benthic sediments within their summer foraging habitat at Palik (Byron Bay). We found microplastics in 95 % of char with an average of 26 (SD ± 19) particles per individual. On average, surface water samples had 23 (SD ± 12) particles/L and benthic sediment <1 particles/g ww . This is the first documentation of plastic pollution in Arctic char and their coastal habitats. The Canadian wildfires in June 2023 significantly impacted the northeastern United States, particularly in terms of worsened air pollution and environmental justice concerns. While advancements have been made in low-cost sensor deployments and satellite observations of atmospheric composition, integrating dynamic human mobility with wildfire PM 2.5 exposure to fully understand the environmental justice implications remains underinvestigated. This study aims to enhance the accuracy of estimating ground-level fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) concentrations by fusing chemical transport model outputs with empirical observations, estimating exposures using human mobility data, and evaluating the impact of environmental justice. Employing a novel data fusion technique, the study combines the Weather Research and Forecasting model with Chemistry (WRF-Chem) outputs and surface PM 2.5 measurements, providing a more accurate estimation of PM 2.5 distribution. The study addresses the gap in traditional exposure assessments by incorporating human mobility data and further investigates the spatial correlation of PM 2.5 levels with various environmental and demographic factors from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Environmental Justice Screening and Mapping Tool (EJScreen). Results reveal that despite reduced mobility during high PM 2.5 levels from wildfire smoke, exposure for both residents and individuals on the move remains high. Regions already burdened with high environmental pollution levels face amplified PM 2.5 effects from wildfire smoke. Furthermore, we observed mixed correlations between PM 2.5 concentrations and various demographic and socioeconomic factors, indicating complex exposure patterns across communities. Urban areas, in particular, experience persistent high exposure, while significant correlations in rural areas with EJScreen factors highlight the unique vulnerabilities of these populations to smoke exposure. Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are organic chemical substances that threaten human health and the planet's ecosystems due to their toxicity and their ability to remain intact for a long time, wide distribution throughout the environment, and accumulation and magnification in living organisms through the food chain. Discarded products from landfills and dumpsites are potential sources of POPs due to their persistence for several decades and constant release to surrounding environment. POPs in aquatic systems signal input predominantly from landfills, wastewater treatment plants, sewage, and urban runoff, suggesting a research gap to guide policies to address these unabated releases. This scoping review aims to rapidly identify the key concepts underpinning the containment, translation, and migration of POPs in Canadian and US landfill leachate. The review targeted multidisciplinary perspectives on the topic and spanned forensic biology, environmental sciences, chemistry, and geology. Contaminated municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill characteristics, as reported by government agencies in Canada and the US, were synthesized and harmonized to illustrate the geographical scope of MSW landfills releasing POPs into the surrounding environment. The knowledge and data gaps summarized in this study highlight the need to address the inadvertent release of POPs from Canadian and US landfills, particularly in consideration of dated and degrading landfill infrastructure, the proximity of marginalized people, and the implications of climate change on the countries' more vulnerable landscapes. To evaluate effects of tertiary treated wastewater treatment plant effluent (MWWE) on transcriptomic responses in longnose dace (Rhinichthys cataractae; LND) we conducted a semi-controlled study in experimental raceways (Advancing Canadian Water Assets facility) imbedded in the Pine Creek treatment plant (Calgary, AB). LND collected from a reference site in the Bow River (REF) were caged in raceways containing either 5 % Pine Creek effluent (PC) or Bow River water (BR; control) over 28 d. Liver transcriptomes were analyzed in males and females sampled on days 7, 14 and 28 from BR and PC, and compared to REF fish on day 0. Concurrent with the caging, selected environmental substances of concern were analyzed in the BR and PC. Significantly different unigenes (SDUs) in females (vs males) within both BR and PC raceways increased over time and compared to REF fish. Moreover, SDUs in females and males within the same treatment (i.e., BR, PC) showed a temporal increase as well as compared to REF fish. Time was the dominant factor affecting SDUs, whereas sex and treatment had less of an impact on the transcriptome profiling. Gene Set Enrichment Analysis of BR vs PC over time revealed effects on genes involved in growth, metabolism of carbohydrates and lipids, and immune system on day 7; however, by day 28, 80-100 % of the transcripts localized to enriched biomarkers were associated with tissue immune responses in both sexes. Exposure to 5 % effluent had significant effects on female liver somatic index but no effects were observed on other phenotypic health indices in either sex. BR was used as the source of reference water, but analyses showed trace amounts of ESOCs. Dioxins, furans, and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a group of persistent and toxic chemicals that are known to have human health effects at low levels. These chemicals have been produced for commercial use (PCBs) or unintentionally as by-products of industry or natural processes (PCBs, dioxins, and furans). Additionally, dioxin-like PCBs were formerly used in electrical applications before being banned internationally (2004). These chemicals are widely dispersed in the environment as they can contaminate air and travel hundreds to thousands of kilometers before depositing on land or water, thereafter, potentially entering food chains. Community concerns surrounding the safety of traditional foods prompted a human biomonitoring project in Old Crow, Yukon Territory (YT), Canada (2019). Through collaborative community engagement, dioxins and like compounds were identified as a priority for exposure assessment from biobanked samples. In 2022, biobanked plasma samples (n = 54) collected in Old Crow were used to measure exposures to seven dioxins, ten furans, and four dioxin-like PCBs. 1,2,3,6,7,8-HxCDD, 1,2,3,7,8,9-HxCDD, 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HpCDD, OCDD, 2,3,4,7,8-PeCDF, 1,2,3,6,7,8-HxCDF, PCB 126, and PCB 169 were detected in at least 50 % of samples. Among these analytes, the only congener at elevated levels was PCB 169, which was approximately ∼2-fold higher than the general population of Canada. No significant sex-based or body mass index (BMI) differences in biomarker concentrations were observed. Beavers (Castor canadensis and C. fiber) build dams that modify catchment and pond water balances, and it has been suggested that they can be a nature-based solution for reducing flood hydrographs, enhancing low flow hydrographs and restoring hydrological functioning of degraded streams. How water moves through a beaver dam is determined by its flow state (e.g., overflow, underflow). However, current conceptual models only consider flow state as changing over the beaver site occupation-abandonment cycle. To assess whether flow state changes at shorter timescales and identify possible triggers (e.g., rainfall, animals), we integrated camera trap imagery, machine learning, water level measurements, and hydrometeorological data at beaver dams in a montane peatland in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Contrary to current models, we found that flow states changed frequently, changing a maximum 12 times during the 139-day study period, but that changes had limited synchronicity amongst the dams in the same stream. More than two-thirds of the changes coincided with rainfall events. We observed no changes in flow state in response to beaver activity or wildlife crossings perhaps due to the camera positioning. Our findings augment the long-term oriented framework, which links changes to the occupancy cycle of a beaver pond and frequent and hydrological-driven changes. To develop realistic predictions of hydrological impacts of beaver dams, ecohydrological models should update their representation of the influence of beaver dams to include short-term dynamism of flow states and potential triggers. A human biomonitoring study was conducted in the community of Old Crow, Yukon, in 2019, finding that levels of hexachlorobenzene (HCB) in plasma were elevated in the community relative to the general Canadian population. The aim of this study was to estimate dietary intake of both hexachlorobenzene, and the nutrient omega-3 fatty acids from locally harvested traditional foods in Old Crow, with the aim of identifying possible regional sources of exposure. A stochastic model was constructed to estimate intake of both hexachlorobenzene and the omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Average predicted hexachlorobenzene exposure levels from traditional food consumption in Old Crow were below the tolerable daily intake of 1600-1700 ng/kg body weight/day in both average (18 ng/kg body weight/day) and short-term maximum (27 ng/kg body weight/day) exposure models. The primary contributors to average hexachlorobenzene intake were caribou fat, bone marrow, ribs, and kidneys, and Chinook salmon muscle. Average estimated dietary EPA + DHA intake levels from traditional foods were below the recommendation of 2.1 to 3.2 g of EPA + DHA per week in the average (1.6 g/week) exposure model, but above this recommendation in the short-term maximum model (3.3 g/week). The primary contributors to average EPA + DHA intake were the meat of Chinook, coho, and, chum salmon muscle, and whitefish muscle and eggs. The concentrations of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) were determined in raw influent, final effluent, and treated biosolids at Canadian wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) to evaluate the fate of PFAS through liquid and solids trains of typical treatment process types used in Canada and to assess time trends of PFAS in wastewater between 2009 and 2021. Data for 42 PFAS in samples collected from 27 WWTP across Canada were used to assess current concentrations and 48 WWTPs were included in the time trends analysis. Although regulated and phased-out of production by industry since the early 2000s and late 2000s/early2010s, respectively, perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS), perfluorooctanoate (PFOA), and other long-chain PFAS continue to be widely detected in Canadian wastewater and biosolids. Short-chain PFAS that are not currently regulated in Canada were also widely detected. In general, elevated concentrations of several PFAS were observed at WWTPs that receive landfill leachate. Except for PFOS, concentrations of long-chain perfluoroalkyl carboxylates (PFCAs) and perfluoroalkane sulfonates (PFSAs) generally decreased over time in influent, effluent, and biosolids, which is attributable to industrial production phase-outs and regulations. Concentrations of PFOS did not decrease over time in wastewater media. This indicates that regulatory action and industrial phase-outs of PFOS are slow to be reflected in wastewater. Concentrations of short-chain PFCAs in wastewater influent and effluent consistently increased between 2009 and 2021, which reflect the use of short-chain PFAS as replacements for phased-out and regulated longer-chained PFAS. Short-chain PFAS were infrequently detected in biosolids. A reconnaissance survey was undertaken to evaluate the occurrence and risks of 27 pharmaceuticals and metabolites in the St. Lawrence watershed. Surface water samples were collected over a five-year period (2017-2021) along a 700-km reach of the St. Lawrence River as well as 55 tributary rivers (overall N = 406 samples). Additionally, depth water samples and sediments were collected near a major wastewater effluent. Caffeine, diclofenac, and venlafaxine were the most recurrent substances (detection rates >80 %), and extremely high levels were found near a municipal effluent (e.g., ibuprofen (860 ng/L), hydroxyibuprofen (1800 ng/L) and caffeine (7200 ng/L)). Geographical mapping and statistical analyses indicated that the St. Lawrence River water mass after the Montreal City effluent was significantly more contaminated than the other water masses, and that contamination could extend up to 70 km further downstream. This phenomenon was repeatedly observed over the five years of sampling, confirming that this is not a random trend. A slight increase in contamination was also observed near Quebec City, but concentrations rapidly declined in the estuarine transition zone. Tributaries with the highest pharmaceutical levels (ΣPharmas ∼400-900 ng/L) included the Mascouche, Saint-Régis, and Bertrand rivers, all located in the densely populated Greater Montreal area. When flowrate was factored in, the top five tributaries in terms of mass load (ΣPharmas ∼200-2000 kg/year) were the Des Prairies, Saint-François, Richelieu, Ottawa, and Yamaska rivers. All samples met the Canadian Water Quality Guideline for carbamazepine. Soil microbial communities play a vital role in the biogeochemical cycling and ecological functioning of grassland, but may be affected by common land uses such as cattle grazing. Changes in microbial diversity and network complexity can affect key ecosystem functions such as nutrient cycling. However, it is not well known how microbial diversity and network complexity respond to grazing in the Northern Great Plains. Consequently, it is important to understand whether variation in grazing management alters the diversity and complexity of grassland microbial communities. We compared the effect of intensive adaptive multi-paddock (AMP) grazing and conventional grazing practices on soil microbial communities using 16S/ITS amplicon sequencing. Samples were collected from grasslands in 13 AMP ranches and 13 neighboring, conventional ranches located across the Canadian prairies. We found that AMP grazing increased fungal diversity and evenness, and led to more complex microbial associations. Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, Gemmatimonadetes, and Bacteroidetes were keystone taxa associated with AMP grazing, while Actinobacteria, Acidobacteria, Proteobacteria, and Armatimonadetes were keystone taxa under conventional grazing. Besides overall grazing treatment effects, specific grazing metrics like cattle stocking rate and rest-to-grazing ratio affected microbial richness and diversity. Bacterial and fungal richness increased with elevated stocking rate, and fungal richness and diversity increased directly with the rest-to-grazing ratio. As the global population grows and is increasingly concentrated in urban environments, the quality of urban horticultural soils is of mounting importance. Until now, most urban horticultural soil assessments have been applied in nations and continents outside North America, and none have been conducted in Canada-an important agricultural region. Here, we present the first Canadian study to evaluate soil health in urban horticultural soil (gardens producing fruit and vegetables), benchmarked against conventional agricultural soil in surrounding rural areas (producing cereals, oilseeds, and legumes). We assessed a range of soil health indicators (total C, soil organic C [SOC], active C, CO 2 evolution, wet aggregate stability [WAS], total N, autoclave citrate extractable [ACE] protein, potentially mineralizable N [PMN], and N 2 O production), soil fertility indicators (inorganic N, available P, and available K), and inherent soil properties (texture, electrical conductivity [EC], and pH). We found that carbon- and nitrogen-based soil attributes in urban horticultural soils were 200 % that of the agricultural soils, indicating superior soil health-which had significant implications for interpreting soil health scores. As for soil fertility, inorganic N and available K did not differ between the two systems, but available P was 400 % higher in urban horticulture than agriculture soils, indicating that management practices which build soil health might risk also building excessive soil P levels. Our findings suggest that urban horticulture soils may provide superior ecosystem services and function as a reservoir for SOC, likely due to the soil health management practices implemented by gardeners-but care should be taken to manage soil health alongside managing soil fertility. Exposure to ambient air pollution is associated with a wide range of adverse health effects such as respiratory symptoms, cardiovascular events, and premature mortality. Canada and the United States (US) have worked collaboratively for decades to address transboundary air pollution and its impacts across their shared border. To inform transboundary air quality considerations, we conducted modelling to attribute health impacts from ambient PM 2.5 and O 3 exposure in Canada to Canadian and US emission sources. We employed emissions, chemical transport, and health impacts modelling for 2015, 2025, and 2035 using a brute-force modelling approach whereby anthropogenic domestic and US emissions were reduced separately by 20 % or 100 %, and the resulting changes in health impacts were estimated across Canada. We find that transboundary PM 2.5 and O 3 related health impacts vary widely by region, with >80 % of impacts occurring in Central Canada, and most health impacts occurring within 200-300 km of the Canada-US border. The relative contribution of US sources to O 3 in Canada is larger than for PM 2.5 , yet we find that the health impacts from transboundary PM 2.5 exceeded those from transboundary O 3 . Nationally, we estimate that roughly one in five PM 2.5 deaths in Canada is attributable to US sources (2000 deaths in 2015) and more than one in two O 3 deaths are attributable to US sources (roughly 800 to 1200 deaths in 2015). We project health impacts from domestic and US sources to increase from 2025 to 2035 in Canada. Characterizing atmospheric depositions allows evaluating the impact of air pollution on ecosystems, human health, and the economy. It also informs decision-makers about the implementation of regulations improving environmental quality. Biomonitoring uses organisms, such as mosses, as proxies to assess the presence of atmospheric contaminants (e.g., metals). This approach is cost-efficient and does not require complicated infrastructure or scientific skills, making it suitable for large-scale monitoring initiatives and citizen-based campaigns. Therefore, precise sampling protocols are needed to limit bias. Biomonitoring data remains scarce in North America, compared to e.g., Europe, and there is a need to develop large-scale and long-term biomonitoring initiatives to record current and future atmospheric depositions. As there is no standardized international sampling protocol, this study assessed the impact of parameters known to affect the elemental concentration of mosses, using samples collected along a 1000-km transect in Eastern Canada (Quebec) from 2016 to 2022. We specifically examined the effects of species, stem color, canopy opening, time of sampling, and stem length on 18 elements. Non-parametric statistical tests indicate that these factors have significant effects on some metals, but differences are generally low (<30 %), except for stem length. These results suggest that sampling protocols can be flexible in terms of species, canopy opening, time of sampling, and stem color. However, normalizing the length of the stems analyzed is required to account for differences in growth rates between sites. UV absorbents (UVAs), such as organic UV filters (UVFs) and benzotriazole UV stabilizers (BZT-UVs), are used in a wide range of consumer and industrial products and they are contaminants of emerging concern in the environment. However, their occurrence and fate in the deep-sea environments are inadequately understood. This study investigated the occurrence and distribution of five UVFs and ten BZT-UVs in the muscle (n = 127) of 2019-collected deepwater redfish (Sebastes mentella) from the St. Lawrence Estuary and Gulf (SLEG) (Canada) to better understand the accumulation of these contaminants in deep-sea fish. Small redfish (<30 cm) tended to have higher concentrations of UVAs in the muscle than that of larger specimens (>30 cm). The UVF 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone (BP3) was the most frequently detected (present in 34 % of all samples) target UVA, with concentrations as high as 413 ng/g (dry weight). According to the δ 15 N and δ 13 C data, pelagic-eating redfish, and individuals with lower trophic levels had higher lipid content and accumulated more BP3 in their muscles. Four BZT-UVs were detected in redfish muscle, but the detection frequency was lower than 30 %. The estimated hazard quotient for these contaminants was <2.3 × 10 -2 for general Canadian populations, indicating that they are unlikely to pose health risks to humans through redfish consumption. Microplastics (MP) remain contaminants of great concern in the ocean because of their abundance, prevalence, and threat to marine organisms. Still, there is a great need for studies on the impact of MP on marine zooplankton. Here, we investigated the effects of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) microfibers (Mf) on the survival, Mf ingestion and retention, predation, and fecal pellets (FP) of the marine amphipod (Cyphocaris challengeri) at environmentally relevant concentrations (0, 10, 100, 1000, 10,000 and 50,000 Mf·L -1 ) and varied exposure time (24, 48 and 72 h). Our study demonstrated that exposure of C. challengeri to PET Mf did not affect their survival. The average number of ingested Mf and the Mf ingestion rate increased significantly with Mf concentrations. Nonetheless, the Mf ingestion rates by C. challengeri decreased significantly between 24 and 72 h in the two highest Mf treatments (10,000 and 50,000 Mf·L -1 ), suggesting careful rejection of the Mf or reduced feeding activity. Indeed, PET Mf significantly reduced the copepod feeding rate of the amphipods at Mf concentrations ≥1000 Mf·L -1 after 24 and 48 h of exposure duration. Over time, prey intake reduction in amphipods due to Mf ingestion could affect their reproductive outcome, growth, development, and cellular and ecosystem function. The encapsulation of PET Mf into the FP of C. challengeri significantly increased the FP density and sinking velocities, ultimately doubling the transfer rate of the FP from the surface waters to the sediments in SoG. Conversely, ingesting PET microfibers and their incorporation in FP will potentially enhance the role of C. challengeri in the biological C pump and sequestration in SoG. Indigenous communities in northern Canada rely on locally harvested traditional foods, including fish, which provides them with nutritional, cultural, and social benefits. However, mercury exposure from fish consumption can pose a health risk for populations that consume large amounts of fish with elevated mercury concentrations. The bioaccessiblity of mercury in the tissue of northern Canadian freshwater fish is not yet known. To address this, samples from five commonly consumed freshwater fish species (Lake Trout, Northern Pike, Walleye, Lake Whitefish, and Burbot) caught from lakes in the Northwest Territories and Yukon, Canada were examined. Total mercury concentrations, fatty acid composition, and total mercury bioaccessibility differed significantly among fish species and lakes. Mean total mercury bioaccessibility using an in vitro gastrointestinal model ranged between 56 % and 96 % in muscle tissue across fish species and waterbodies examined and was 39 % in liver tissue from Burbot. Mean total mercury bioaccessibility was much lower (range: 38 % to 42 %) for a subset of samples run through only the gastric phase of the digestion model. Total mercury bioaccessibility was significantly lower (on average 40 % lower) in a subset of samples that were pan-fried in water. Thus, although cooking increased total mercury concentrations in pan-fried fish samples (likely due to moisture loss), bioaccessible concentrations of total mercury were lower (on average 32 % lower). Results from this study contribute to addressing a large knowledge gap in the literature regarding bioaccessibility of total mercury in northern freshwater fish species. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to examine mercury bioaccessibility in raw and cooked liver samples from freshwater fish. Veterinary antimicrobials (VAs) widely used in intensive livestock production are excreted in livestock manure. Manure is an essential component in agriculture for recycling critical nutrients and improving overall soil health. However, manure application on agricultural lands increases the risk of contaminating the ecosystem with antimicrobials. Antimicrobials in manure-amended soils can affect ecosystem functioning via their negative effect on biogeochemical cycles and increase human exposure. Also, the release of antimicrobials to the broader environment, including that arising because of offsite transport, is linked to the global increase in antibiotic resistance in bacteria. Antibiotic resistance is an emerging global threat to human health, particularly the pathogenic bacteria resistant to the main antimicrobial classes in use. Therefore, there is a need to review current literature to enhance our understanding of the fate of these contaminants across agricultural landscapes. This review focuses on (1) a detailed discussion of sorption mechanisms by exploring the structural attributes of antimicrobials, (2) specific sorption interactions with active adsorbent components in the soil as these comprehensive data are important to identify the sorption strengths of antimicrobials which control their fate in the ecosystem, and (3) the effects of on-farm management practices on VA transport and is focused on manure amendment and tillage practices. The key facts identified in this review are critical to identifying sustainable on-farm management practices to enhance the productivity of arable agricultural lands in Canada and across the globe while minimizing the risk of offsite transport of VAs. Terrestrial ecosystems store large amounts of mercury (Hg), which may be subject to methylation, mobilization and uptake into downstream aquatic ecosystems. Mercury concentrations, methylation and demethylation potentials are not well characterized simultaneously across different habitats in boreal forest ecosystems, particularly not so in stream sediment, leading to uncertainties about the importance of various habitats as primary production areas of the bioaccumulative neurotoxin methylmercury (MeHg). In this study, we collected soil and sediment samples from 17 undisturbed, central Canadian boreal forested watersheds during spring, summer and fall to robustly characterize the spatial (upland and riparian/wetland soils, and stream sediment) and seasonal patterns of total Hg (THg) and MeHg concentrations. Mercury methylation and MeHg demethylation potentials (K meth and K demeth ) in the soils and sediment were also assessed using enriched stable Hg isotope assays. We found the highest K meth and %-MeHg in stream sediment. In both riparian and wetland soils, Hg methylation was lower and less seasonally variable compared to stream sediment, but had comparable MeHg concentrations, suggesting longer-term storage of MeHg produced in these soils. Soil and sediment carbon content, and THg and MeHg concentrations were strong covariates across habitats. Additionally, sediment carbon content was important for delineating between stream sediment with relatively high vs. relatively low Hg methylation potential, which generally separated between different landscape physiographies. Broadly, this large and spatiotemporally diverse dataset is an important baseline for understanding Hg biogeochemistry in boreal forests both in Canada and possibly in many other boreal systems globally. Understanding the environmental conditions and taxa that promote the occurrence of cyanobacterial toxins is imperative for effective management of lake ecosystems. Herein, we modeled total microcystin presence and concentrations with a broad suite of environmental predictors and cyanobacteria community data collected across 440 Canadian lakes using standardized methods. We also conducted a focused analysis targeting 14 microcystin congeners across 190 lakes, to examine how abiotic and biotic factors influence their relative proportions. Microcystins were detected in 30 % of lakes, with the highest total concentrations occurring in the most eutrophic lakes located in ecozones of central Canada. The two most commonly detected congeners were MC-LR (61 % of lakes) and MC-LA (37 % of lakes), while 11 others were detected more sporadically across waterbodies. Congener diversity peaked in central Canada where cyanobacteria biomass was highest. Using a zero-altered hurdle model, the probability of detecting microcystin was best explained by increasing Microcystis biomass, Daphnia and cyclopoid biomass, soluble reactive phosphorus, pH and wind. Microcystin concentrations increased with the biomass of Microcystis and other less dominant cyanobacteria taxa, as well as total phosphorus, cyclopoid copepod biomass, dissolved inorganic carbon and water temperature. Collectively, these models accounted for 34 % and 70 % of the variability, respectively. Chlorinated organic compounds, such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), are a threat to both humans and the environment because of their toxicity, persistence, and capacity for long-range atmospheric transport. The concentrations of 28 PCB congeners, including 12 dioxin-like and seven indicator PCBs, were investigated in soils, and indoor and outdoor dusts from Port Harcourt city, Nigeria, in order to evaluate the characteristic distribution patterns in these media, their sources, and possible risk. The PCB concentrations varied from 4.59 to 116 ng g -1 for soils, and from 1.80 to 23.0 ng g -1 and 2.73 to 57.4 ng g -1 for indoor and outdoor dusts respectively. The sequence of PCB concentrations in these matrices was soil > outdoor dust > indoor dust. The composition of PCBs in these matrices indicated the prevalence of lower chlorinated PCBs in indoor and outdoor dusts, while the higher chlorinated congeners were dominant in soils. Di-PCBs were the predominant homologues in indoor dusts, while deca-PCBs were the most prevalent homologues in outdoor dusts and soils. The TEQ values of dioxin-like PCBs in 60 % of the soils, 100 % of the indoor dust, and 30 % of the outdoor dust were above the indicative value of 4 pg TEQ g -1 established by the Canadian authority. The hazard index (HI) values for exposure of adults and children to PCBs in these media were mostly greater than one, while the total cancer risk (TCR) values exceeded the acceptable risk value of 10 -6 , which indicate probable non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks resulting from exposure to PCBs in these media. Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are widely used in numerous consumer products for their flame retardant and plasticizing properties. Despite potential widespread exposure, biomonitoring data during critical windows of development are scarce and limited to the most widely studied metabolites. We quantified urinary concentrations of multiple OPE metabolites in a vulnerable Canadian population. Using data and biobanked specimens from the Maternal-Infant Research on Environmental Chemicals (MIREC) study (2008-2011), we measured first trimester urinary concentrations of 15 OPE metabolites as well as one flame retardant metabolite and quantified associations with sociodemographic and sample collection characteristics in 1865 pregnant participants. We applied 2 different analytical methods to quantify OPEs, one using UItra-Performance Liquid Chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) and the other using Atmospheric Pressure Gas Chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (APGC-MS/MS) with sensitive limits of detection (0.008-0.1 μg/L). We modelled associations between sociodemographic and sample collection characteristics and specific gravity-standardized chemical concentrations. Six OPE metabolites were detected in the majority (68.1-97.4 %) of participants. Bis-(2-chloroethyl) hydrogen phosphate had the highest detection rate (97.4 %). Diphenyl phosphate had the highest geometric mean concentration (0.657 μg/L). Metabolites of tricresyl phosphate were detected in few participants. Associations between sociodemographic characteristics varied according to each OPE metabolite. Pre-pregnancy body mass index tended to be positively associated with OPE metabolite concentrations whereas age tended to be inversely associated with OPE concentrations. OPE concentrations were, on average, higher in urine samples collected in the summer than other seasons the winter. We present the largest biomonitoring study of OPE metabolites in pregnant people to date. Agriculture is one the main drivers of bird decline in both Europe and North America. While it is clear that agricultural practices and changes in the rural landscape directly and indirectly affect bird communities, we still do not know the extent to which these impacts might change across broad spatial and temporal scales. To address this question, we combined information on agricultural activities with occurrence and abundance of 358 bird species across five time periods spanning 20 years in Canada. As a proxy for agricultural impact, we used a combined index that included different agricultural metrics, such as cropland and tillage area and area treated with pesticides. We found that agriculture impact was negatively associated with bird diversity and evenness across all 20 years studied, but these associations seemed to vary by region. We found good support for an overall negative association between agriculture impact and bird diversity and evenness in the Eastern and Atlantic regions but weaker associations in the Prairies and Pacific. These findings suggest that agricultural activities result in bird communities that are less diverse and disproportionately benefit certain species. The spatial variation in the impact of agriculture on bird diversity and evenness we observed is likely a result of regional differences in the native vegetation, the type of crops and commodities produced, the historical context of agriculture, as well as the native bird community and the extent of their association with open habitat. Recent increases in the demand for rare earth elements (REE) have contributed to various countries' interest in exploration of their REE deposits, including within Canada. Current limited knowledge of REE distribution in undisturbed subarctic environments and their bioaccumulation within northern species is addressed through a collaborative community-based environmental monitoring program in Nunavik (Quebec, Canada). This study provides background REE values (lanthanides + yttrium) and investigates REE anomalies (i.e., deviations from standard pattern) across terrestrial, freshwater, and marine ecosystems in an area where a REE mining project is in development. Results are characteristic of a biodilution of REE, with the highest mean total REE concentrations (ΣREE) reported in sediments (10 2  nmol/g) and low trophic level organisms (i.e., biofilm, macroalgae, macroinvertebrates, common mussels, and reindeer lichens; 10 1 -10 2  nmol/g), and the lowest mean concentrations in higher-level consumers (i.e., goose, ptarmigan, char, whitefish, cod, sculpin and seal; 10 -2 - 10 1  nmol/g). The animal tissues are of importance to northern villages and analyses demonstrate a species-specific bioaccumulation of REE, with mean concentrations up to 40 times greater in liver compared to muscle, with bones and kidneys presenting intermediate concentrations and the lowest in blubber. Further, a tissue-specific fractionation was presented, with significant light REE (LREE) enrichment compared to heavy REE (HREE) in consumer livers (LREE/HREE ≅ 10 1 ) and the most pronounced negative cerium (Ce) anomalies (<0.80) in liver and bones of fish species. These fractionation patterns, along with novel negative relationships presented between fish size (length, mass) and Ce anomalies suggest metabolic, ecological, and/or environmental influences on REE bioaccumulation and distribution within biota. Human biomonitoring programs of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been conducted around the world to assess human exposure and health risk. Inquiry into population PFAS levels in a socioeconomically and geographically unique region such as the Pacific Island Papua New Guinea, may provide new insights into PFAS exposure pathways and sources. This study presented the first indication of PFAS exposure in the Papua New Guinea population. De-identified serum samples were pooled from surplus pathology serum samples collected between 2019 and 2020. A total of 11 PFAS were detected in the serum pools including 10 perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAA) and 9Cl-F53B (a perfluorooctane sulfonic acid - PFOS alternative). The observed PFAA profile was somewhat similar to that observed for general population data of other countries such as Australia, Malaysia, and Canada suggesting similar exposure sources and/or pathways. However, PFAS concentrations were consistently lower than concentrations in the serum measured in pools obtained from Australia. Neonicotinoids are the most widely used insecticides worldwide. However, the widespread usage of neonicotinoids has sparked concerns over their effects on non-target ecosystems including surface waters. We present here a comprehensive meta-analysis of 173 peer-reviewed studies (1998-2022) reporting measured insecticide concentrations (MICs; n = 3983) for neonicotinoids in global surface waters resulting from agricultural nonpoint source pollution. We used compound-specific regulatory threshold levels for water (RTL SW ) and sediment (RTL SED ) defined for pesticide authorization in Canada, the EU and the US, and multispecies endpoints (MSE SW ) to assess acute and chronic risks of global neonicotinoid water-phase (MIC SW ; n = 3790) and sediment (MIC SED ; n = 193) concentrations. Results show a complete lack of exposure information for surface waters in >90 % of agricultural areas globally. However, available data indicates for MIC SW overall acute risks to be low (6.7 % RTL SW&#95;acute exceedances), but chronic risks to be of concern (20.7 % RTL SW&#95;chronic exceedances); exceedance frequencies were particularly high for chronic MSE SW (63.3 %). We found RTL SW exceedances to be highest for imidacloprid and in less regulated countries. Linear model analysis revealed risks for global agricultural surface waters to decrease significantly over time, potentially biased by the lack of sensitive analytical methods in early years of neonicotinoid monitoring. The Canadian, EU and US RTL SW differ considerably (up to factors of 223 for RTL SW&#95;acute and 13,889 for RTL SW&#95;chronic ) for individual neonicotinoids, indicating large uncertainties and regulatory challenges in defining robust and protective RTLs. Mercury (Hg) is a globally distributed heavy metal, with negative effects on wildlife. Its most toxic form, methylmercury (MeHg), predominates in aquatic systems. Levels of MeHg in marine predators can vary widely among individuals and populations. Leach's storm-petrels (Hydrobates leucorhous) have elevated levels of Hg but the role of Hg in storm-petrel population declines is unknown. In this study, we used egg and blood samples to study variation in Hg exposure among several northwest Atlantic colonies during breeding seasons, thereby evaluating relative toxicity risk within and among colonies. Total mercury (THg) concentrations were higher with increasing colony latitude, and were more pronounced in blood than in eggs. THg concentrations in blood were mostly associated with low toxicity risk in birds from the southern colonies and moderate risks in birds from the northern colonies; however, those values did not affect hatching or fledging success. THg concentrations in both eggs and blood were positively correlated with δ 34 S, emphasizing the role of sulfate-reducing bacteria in methylation of THg acquired through marine food webs, which is consistent with enriched δ 34 S profiles. By associating tracking data from foraging trips with THg from blood, we determined that blood THg levels were higher when storm-petrel's intensive search locations were over deeper waters. We conclude that spatial variation in THg concentrations in Leach's storm-petrels is attributable to differences in ocean depth at foraging locations, both at individual and colony levels. Differences in diet among colonies observed previously are the most likely cause for observed blood THg differences. As one of the few pelagic seabird species breeding in Atlantic Canada, with limited overlap in core foraging areas among colonies, Leach's storm-petrels can be used as biomonitors for less sampled offshore pelagic regions. Cadmium (Cd) is a trace element of toxicological concern that has been monitored in marine birds inhabiting the Canadian Arctic since 1975. Despite nearly 50 years of monitoring, research to date has largely evaluated single species, locations, or time points, and there is as of yet no holistic overview that jointly considers all available Cd data. We addressed this information gap by combining and analyzing most of the existing data on hepatic Cd concentrations in marine birds from the Canadian Arctic. Using data collected between 1975 and 2018 from eight seabird species from 12 Arctic breeding colonies, we examined temporal, spatial, and interspecific variation in hepatic Cd levels, and we evaluated possible drivers of marine bird Cd loads. Hepatic Cd concentrations ranged from 1.6 to 124 μg/g dry weight across species, and were highest in thick-billed murres (Uria lomvia) and king eiders (Somateria spectabilis), and lowest in black guillemots (Cepphus grylle), black-legged kittiwakes (Rissa tridactyla), and long-tailed ducks (Clangula hyemalis). All sites with multiple years of data showed interannual fluctuations in Cd, which were correlated with the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) index and with the previous year's June sea ice coverage, where marine birds exhibited higher Cd concentrations in positive NAO years and following years with lower sea ice coverage. Climate change is likely to shift the NAO to being more negative and to reduce sea ice coverage, and our results thus identify various ways by which climate change could alter Cd concentrations in marine birds in the Canadian Arctic. Shifts in hydroclimatic regimes associated with global climate change may impact freshwater availability and quality. In high latitudes of the northern hemisphere, where vast quantities of carbon are stored terrestrially, explaining landscape-scale carbon (C) budgets and associated pollutant transfer is necessary for understanding the impact of changing hydroclimatic regimes. We used a dynamic modelling approach to simulate streamflow, DOC concentration, and DOC export in a northern Canadian catchment that has undergone notable climate warming, and will continue to for the remainder of this century. The Integrated Catchment model for Carbon (INCA-C) was successfully calibrated to a multi-year period (2012-2016) that represents a range in hydrologic conditions. The model was subsequently run over 30-year periods representing baseline and two future climate scenarios. Average discharge is predicted to decrease under an elevated temperature scenario (22-27 % of baseline) but increase (116-175 % of baseline) under an elevated temperature and precipitation scenario. In the latter scenario the nival hydroclimatic regime is expected to shift to a combined nival and pluvial regime. Average DOC flux over 30 years is predicted to decrease (24-27 % of baseline) under the elevated temperature scenario, as higher DOC concentrations are offset by lower runoff. Under the elevated temperature and precipitation scenario, results suggest an increase in carbon export of 64-81 % above baseline. These increases are attributed to greater connectivity of the catchment. The largest increase in DOC export is expected to occur in early winter. Hudson Bay is a small arctic inland shelf sea which receives large amounts of freshwater from riverine discharges, with marine flow from the north and the Atlantic. A warming climate has resulted in an expanded open water season which will result in an increase in shipping of fuel oil and petroleum to communities and mines on the western shore, increasing the risk of hydrocarbon releases. To evaluate the status of hydrocarbons, surface sediments were collected at 34 locations in the transportation route and offshore and analysed for several types of hydrocarbons. Total hydrocarbons varied by over 25 times between sites, reaching a maximum of 1116 μg/g OC (organic carbon basis) in Hudson Strait due to low molecular weight n-alkanes from marine primary production. The gross mean for all sites was 344 μg/g OC (GSD = 173-682), roughly equivalent to other remote sites in the Canadian Arctic with no known local hydrocarbon source. n-alkanes accounted for >90 % of residues. Diagnostic ratios (e.g., Carbon Preference Index (CPI), Odd-Even Predominance (OEP)) indicated mixed sources of n-alkanes, likely due to the input from vascular plants and ombrotrophic peat in northern and western watersheds, and primary production within the Bay. The elevated proportion of high molecular weight n-alkanes at deep water sites is consistent with lotic particulate organic matter deposited in the nearshore environment and redeposited offshore. Ʃ 36 PAHs were a small fraction (1.9 %) of hydrocarbons, with a gross mean of 5.68 μg/g OC (GSD = 3.30-9.79). PCA separated deep water sediments from nearshore and community samples due to 4 alkylated naphthalenes which usually indicate a petrogenic source but probably indicates a natural source due to the lack of other petrogenic markers. Priority PAHs (i.e., Ʃ 16 PAH) varied from 31.5 % to 56.6 % of the Ʃ 36 PAH residues. Arctic rivers deliver ~40 t yr -1 of mercury (Hg) to the Arctic Ocean, ~6 % of which is from the Mackenzie River Basin (MRB), a region warming at ~3 times the mean hemispheric rate. How this will affect Hg transfer to ecosystems of the Beaufort Sea is a worrying issue. To help address this question, we analyzed >500 measurements of Hg and other water properties from 22 rivers collected in 2012-2018 by communities of the MRB. This new dataset provides a more comprehensive view of riverine Hg variations across the basin than was previously available. We find that rivers issued from mountains in the western MRB contribute the largest share of Hg in the Mackenzie River, 60-95 % of it being carried as fine suspended solids and probably sourced from riverbank erosion and thaw slumps. In contrast, lowland rivers of the central and eastern MRB contribute larger shares of dissolved Hg (up to 78 %), likely from recent atmospheric deposition through precipitation. Using load modelling constrained by the new water quality dataset, we estimate that the three largest western tributaries (Liard, Peel and Arctic Red rivers) of the Mackenzie contribute 60 % of the annual MRB THg export and DHg export to the Beaufort Sea during freshet, as well as 51 % of DHg export, while supplying 60 % of freshet discharge. Load modelling also reveals a sustained decline in DHg loads of ~13 kg yr -1 between 2001 and 2016 in the lower Mackenzie River, which likely reflect a decreasing trend in atmospheric Hg deposition over most of northwestern Canada during this period. Understanding boreal/hemi-boreal forest growth sensitivity to seasonal variations in temperature and water availability provides important basis for projecting the potential impacts of climate change on the productivity of these ecosystems. Our best available information currently comes from a limited number of field experiments and terrestrial biosphere model (TBM) simulations of varying predictive accuracy. Here, we assessed the sensitivity of annual boreal/hemi-boreal forest growth in Canada to yearly fluctuations in seasonal climate variables using a large tree-ring dataset and compared this to the climate sensitivity of annual net primary productivity (NPP) estimates obtained from fourteen TBMs. We found that boreal/hemi-boreal forest growth sensitivity to fluctuations in seasonal temperature and precipitation variables changed along a southwestern to northeastern gradient, with growth limited almost entirely by temperature in the northeast and west and by water availability in the southwest. We also found a lag in growth climate sensitivity, with growth largely determined by the climate during the summer prior to ring formation. Analyses of NPP sensitivity to the same climate variables produced a similar southwest to northeast gradient in growth climate sensitivity for NPP estimates from all but three TBMs. However, analyses of growth from tree-ring data and analyses of NPP from TBMs produced contrasting evidence concerning the key climate variables limiting growth. While analyses of NPP primarily indicated a positive relationship between growth and seasonal temperature, tree-ring analyses indicated negative growth relationships to temperature. Also, the positive effect of precipitation on NPP derived from most TBMs was weaker than the positive effect of precipitation on tree-ring based growth: temperature had a more important limiting effect on NPP than tree-ring data indicated. Animal manure can be a serious environmental concern if improperly managed, particularly with regard to phosphorus (P). A good understanding on manure P chemistry is required for improving manure management in an environmentally sustainable manner. In the study, 102 representative manure samples collected from farms of major intensive livestock areas of Canada were sequentially fractionated with H 2 O, 0.5 M NaHCO 3 , 0.1 M NaOH, and 1.0 M HCl, respectively, for measuring inorganic (Pi) and organic P (Po). Across the manures, total P (TP) ranged from 3.71 to 17.3 g kg -1 , with total Pi and available P (i.e., the sum of H 2 O-Pi and NaHCO 3 -Pi) accounting for 67.0-92.4 % and 35.6-67.3 % of TP, respectively. Composting reduced the percentages of available P and Po in TP, and meanwhile increased the percentages of moderately stable HCl-Pi. Compared to other P fractions, manure available P increased more rapidly with increases in TP; once manure TP reached 7.8-9.6 g kg -1 , further TP increase enhanced transformation to more recalcitrant P (i.e., NaOH-Pi and HCl-Pi). Under Canadian conditions, manure application to meet the demand of crops for N would lead to P buildup in the soil at rates of 6.1-41.6 kg P ha -1 yr -1 , increasing runoff P loss risk. Manure compost and poultry manure tend to cause rapid P buildup in the soil after land application and become a long-term P source for runoff losses. Arctic Indigenous Peoples are among the most exposed humans when it comes to foodborne mercury (Hg). In response, Hg monitoring and research have been on-going in the circumpolar Arctic since about 1991; this work has been mainly possible through the involvement of Arctic Indigenous Peoples. The present overview was initially conducted in the context of a broader assessment of Hg research organized by the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme. This article provides examples of Indigenous Peoples' contributions to Hg monitoring and research in the Arctic, and discusses approaches that could be used, and improved upon, when carrying out future activities. Over 40 mercury projects conducted with/by Indigenous Peoples are identified for different circumpolar regions including the U.S., Canada, Greenland, Sweden, Finland, and Russia as well as instances where Indigenous Knowledge contributed to the understanding of Hg contamination in the Arctic. Perspectives and visions of future Hg research as well as recommendations are presented. The establishment of collaborative processes and partnership/co-production approaches with scientists and Indigenous Peoples, using good communication practices and transparency in research activities, are key to the success of research and monitoring activities in the Arctic. Sustainable funding for community-driven monitoring and research programs in Arctic countries would be beneficial and assist in developing more research/monitoring capacity and would promote a more holistic approach to understanding Hg in the Arctic. Monitoring the communal incidence of COVID-19 is important for both government and residents of an area to make informed decisions. However, continuous reliance on one means of monitoring might not be accurate because of biases introduced by government policies or behaviours of residents. Wastewater surveillance was employed to monitor concentrations of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in raw influent wastewater from wastewater treatment plants serving three Canadian Prairie cities with different population sizes. Data obtained from wastewater are not directly influenced by government regulations or behaviours of individuals. The means of three weekly samples collected using 24 h composite auto-samplers were determined. Viral loads were determined by RT-qPCR, and whole-genome sequencing was used to charaterize variants of concern (VOC). The dominant VOCs in the three cities were the same but with different proportions of sub-lineages. Sub-lineages of Delta were AY.12, AY.25, AY.27 and AY.93 in 2021, while the major sub-lineage of Omicron was BA.1 in January 2022, and BA.2 subsequently became a trace-level sub-variant then the predominant VOC. When each VOC was first detected varied among cities; However, Saskatoon, with the largest population, was always the first to present new VOCs. Viral loads varied among cities, but there was no direct correlation with population size, possibly because of differences in flow regimes. Population is one of the factors that affects trends in onset and development of local outbreaks during the pandemic. This might be due to demography or the fact that larger populations had greater potential for inter- and intra-country migration. Global anthropogenic and legacy mercury (Hg) emissions are the main sources of Arctic Hg contamination, primarily transported there via the atmosphere. This review summarizes the state of knowledge of the global anthropogenic sources of Hg emissions, and examines recent changes and source attribution of Hg transport and deposition to the Arctic using models. Estimated global anthropogenic Hg emissions to the atmosphere for 2015 were ~2220 Mg, ~20% higher than 2010. Global anthropogenic, legacy and geogenic Hg emissions were, respectively, responsible for 32%, 64% (wildfires: 6-10%) and 4% of the annual Arctic Hg deposition. Relative contributions to Arctic deposition of anthropogenic origin was dominated by sources in East Asia (32%), Commonwealth of Independent States (12%), and Africa (12%). Model results exhibit significant spatiotemporal variations in Arctic anthropogenic Hg deposition fluxes, driven by regional differences in Hg air transport routes, surface and precipitation uptake rates, and inter-seasonal differences in atmospheric circulation and deposition pathways. Model simulations reveal that changes in meteorology are having a profound impact on contemporary atmospheric Hg in the Arctic. Reversal of North Atlantic Oscillation phase from strongly negative in 2010 to positive in 2015, associated with lower temperature and more sea ice in the Canadian Arctic, Greenland and surrounding ocean, resulted in enhanced production of bromine species and Hg(0) oxidation and lower evasion of Hg(0) from ocean waters in 2015. This led to increased Hg(II) (and its deposition) and reduced Hg(0) air concentrations in these regions in line with High Arctic observations. Mercury has become a ubiquitous hazardous element even ending up in pristine areas such as the Arctic, where it biomagnifies and leaves especially top predators vulnerable to potential health effects. Here we investigate total mercury (THg) concentrations and dietary proxies for trophic position and habitat foraging (δ 15 N and δ 13 C, respectively) in fur of 30 Arctic wolves collected during 1869-1998 in the Canadian High Arctic and Greenland. Fur THg concentrations (mean ± SD) of 1.46 ± 1.39 μg g -1 dry weight are within the range of earlier reported values for other Arctic terrestrial species. Based on putative thresholds for Hg-mediated toxic health effects, the studied Arctic wolves have most likely not been at compromised health. Dietary proxies show high dietary plasticity among Arctic wolves deriving nutrition from both marine and terrestrial food sources at various trophic positions. Variability in THg concentrations seem to be related to the wolves' trophic position rather than to different carbon sources or regional differences (East Greenland, the Foxe Basin and Baffin Bay area, respectively). Anthropogenic stressors affect lakes around the world, ranging in scale from catchment-specific pollutants to the global impacts of climate change. Canada has a large number and diversity of lakes, yet it is not well understood how, where, and when human impacts have affected these lakes at a national scale. The NSERC Canadian Lake Pulse Network sought to create the first nationwide database of Canadian lake health, undertaking a multi-year survey of 664 lakes spanning 12 ecozones across Canada. A key objective of the network is to determine where, by how much, and why have Canadian lakes changed during the Anthropocene. To address this objective, we compared sedimentary chlorophyll a and diatoms from modern and pre-industrial sediment intervals of ~200 lakes. The lakes spanned a range of sizes, ecozones, and degrees of within-catchment land use change. We inferred the quantity of chlorophyll a, its isomers and main diagenetic products using visible reflectance spectroscopy. We found widespread increases in primary production since pre-industrial times. Primary production increased, on average, across all ecozones, human impact classes, and stratification classes. Likewise, an increase in planktonic diatom taxa over time was detected in the majority of sampled lakes, likely due to recent climate warming. However, regional factors (ecozones) explained the most variation in modern diatom species assemblages as well as their temporal turnover. Furthermore, lakes with high human impact (i.e., higher weighted proportions of human land use in the catchment) exhibited greater taxonomic turnover than lakes with a low human impact class. The greatest diatom turnover was found in the agriculture-rich Prairies and the lowest in the sparsely populated Boreal Shield and Taiga Cordillera ecozones. Many boreal populations of woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) have declined in Canada, a trend essentially driven by the increasing footprint of anthropogenic disturbances and the resulting habitat-mediated apparent competition that increases predation pressure. However, the influence of climate change on these ecological processes remains poorly understood. We evaluated how climate change will affect boreal caribou habitat over the 2030-2100 horizon and in a 9.94 Mha study area, using a climate-sensitive simulation ensemble that integrates climate-induced changes in stand dynamics, fire regime, and different levels of commercial timber harvesting. We assessed the relative importance of these three drivers under projections made using different radiative forcing scenarios (RCP 2.6, 4.5, 8.5). Habitat quality was estimated from resource selection functions built with telemetry data collected from 121 caribou between 2004 and 2011 in 7 local populations. At the beginning of our simulations, caribou habitat was already structured along a south-to-north increasing quality gradient. Simulations revealed changes in forest cover that are driven by climate-induced variations in fire regime and scenarios of harvesting levels, resulting in the loss of older coniferous forests and an increase in deciduous stands. These changes induced a generalized decrease in the average habitat quality and in the percentage of high-quality habitat for caribou, and in a northward recession of suitable habitat. Timber harvesting was the most important agent of change for the 2030-2050 horizon, although it was slowly replaced by changes in fire regime until 2100. Our results clearly showed that it is possible to maintain the current average habitat quality for caribou in future scenarios that consider a reduction in harvested volumes, the only lever under our control. Perfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) were determined in human milk samples (n = 664) from participants in the Maternal-Infant Research on Environmental Chemicals (MIREC) study. ΣPFAS concentrations (sum of seven PFAS) ranged from 3.1 ng L -1 to 603 ng L -1 , with a median concentration of 106 ng L -1 in the Canadian mothers' milk analyzed. These data comprise the first pan-Canadian dataset of PFAS in human milk. Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and linear perfluorooctanesulfonate (L-PFOS) were the dominant contributors to ΣPFAS in human milk samples. An inverse relationship between ΣPFAS concentrations and age was observed (Spearman correlation - 0.184). Primiparous women had elevated PFAS concentrations in milk relative to women who had children previously (p < 0.001). In contrast, the region of maternal birth did not influence ΣPFAS concentrations (p = 0.156). Although China and Norway have observed consistently detectable levels of perfluoroundecanoic acid (PFUdA) in human milk, PFAS with long carbon chains (n ≥ 11) were not present above method detection limits in Canadian human milk samples analyzed as part of the MIREC study. China is the world's largest pesticide user. These chemicals are bioaccumulative in the human body, and eventually could be transferred from the mother to the fetus/infant via placental and breastfeeding transport, which might pose developmental deficiency risks. In this study, human biomonitoring of legacy pesticides was conducted in three Chinese cities using 60 breast milk samples. The patterns, chemical structural signatures, and the estimated daily intake of pesticides were assessed. The median concentration of HCB (57.8 ng g -1 lw, Interquartile range: 28.5-76.9 ng g -1 lw) was the highest among all pesticides, whereas the HCHs, DDXs, TCVP, and heptachlor were also detected. A significantly different pattern of pesticides was found among three sampling cities: the Mianyang cases were mostly DDXs oriented while the Wuhan and Hangzhou cases were under HCB, HCHs, TCVP, and heptachlor influences. Maternal age and pre-pregnancy BMI were found to be the influencing factors for the pesticides in the breast milk, and dietary preferences were an important factor in the exposure scenario. Chemical structural signatures indicated that for HCHs and DDXs the exposure was mostly historical, while the lindane and dicofol exposure may exist among the volunteering mothers. The EF for chiral pesticides did not deviate significantly from the racemic value. The risk from breastfeeding was negligible according to the Chinese and UN standard, while some cases from Hangzhou and Wuhan exceeded the Canadian restrictions.
