The contamination of paper products by various chemicals has been reported on a global level, but to date, no published research has investigated pharmaceutical contamination of paper-based products. In this study, pharmaceutical analysis was conducted on 42 samples collected from various points of the recycled paper value chain in Cape Town, South Africa, which included the various grades that may be included in the manufacturing of recycled paperboard. The analysis was achieved by ultrasonic-assisted extraction of paper samples before detection by UHPLC-Q Orbitrap. Quantification limits ranged from 1.15 pg/g for ketoprofen to 46.07 pg/g for methocarbamol. Pharmaceuticals identified in newspaper samples were dexamethasone, ketoprofen, and 17β-estradiol. The latter was also detected in paper shopping bags (up to 697.49 ng/g), infant bathtub packaging (280.62 ng/g), battery packaging (137.43 ng/g), and an egg carton (170.47 ng/g). Carbamazepine was also prominent with its concentration reaching 13.02 ng/g in a vegetable box. Suspect screening tentatively identified 14 additional pharmaceuticals in paper samples, with minocycline, prazepam, and anabolic steroids appearing more prominently. Traditional PFAS analysis by mass spectrometry (MS) is time-consuming, as laborious sample preparation (e.g., extraction and desalting) is necessary. Herein, we report fast detection of PFAS by paper spray (PS)-based MS techniques, which employs a triangular-shaped filter paper for sample loading and ionization (≤ 3 min per sample). In this study, PS-MS was first used for direct PFAS analysis of drinking water, tap water, and wastewater. Interestingly, food package paper materials can be directly cut and examined with PS-MS for possible PFAS contamination. For samples containing salt matrices which would suppress PFAS ion signal, desalting paper spray mass spectrometry (DPS-MS), was shown to be capable of rapidly desalting, ionizing and detecting PFAS species such as per-fluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and per-fluorosulphonic acid (PFOS). The retention of PFAS on paper substrate while salts being washed away by water is likely due to hydrophilic interaction between the PFAS polar head (e.g., carboxylic acid, sulfonic acid) with the polar filter paper cellulose surface. The DPS-MS method is highly sensitive (limits of detection:1.2-4.5 ppt) and can be applicable for directly analyzing soil extract and soil samples. The concern over plastic contamination has led to bans on plastic shopping bags, often replaced by paper ones. However, logos painted or printed on paper bags may still contain plastics, as investigated herein. In some logos, for example, white pigment of titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) nanoparticles are bound with plastic binder onto the cellulose surface of the paper. This hybrid of plastic and nanoparticle is examined using scanning electron microscope (SEM) to characterise morphology physically, and Raman imaging to identify and visualise them chemically. Raman imaging scans the sample to separate images and identify not only plastic but also the co-formulated pigment. The scan generates a hyperspectral matrix containing hundreds to thousands of spectra, and subsequent analysis can enhance the signal-to-noise ratio. Decoding the hyperspectral matrix using chemometrics like principal component analysis (PCA) can effectively map plastic and pigment separately with increased certainty. The image can be further refined through 3-dimensional surface fitting for deconvolution, providing direct visualisation of the plastic-nanoparticle hybrid at a density of approximately 7.3 million particles per square millimetre. Overall, caution should be exercised when using paper bags, as they may not be entirely free of plastics. Raman imaging proves to be an effective method for identifying and visualising complex components, including plastics and nanoparticles. By employing decoding algorithms such as PCA to separately map plastic and pigment, and utilising 3D surface fitting to deconvolute the image, the hybrid plastic-nanoparticle is estimated at a density of approximately 7.3 million particles per square millimetre. It's important to exercise caution and not assume these items are plastic-free. Cu 2+ contamination and food spoilage raise food and drinking water safety issues, posing a serious threat to human health. Besides, Cu 2+ and H 2 S levels indicate excess Cu 2+ -caused diseases and protein-containing food spoilage. Herein, a coumarin-containing bifunctional paper-based fluorescent platform integrated with a straightforward smartphone color recognition app is developed by an all-in-one strategy. The proposed fluorescent materials can simultaneously detect Cu 2+ and H 2 S for on-demand food and drinking water safety monitoring at home. Specifically, a coumarin-derived fluorescence sensor (referred to as CMIA) with a low detection limit (0.430 μM) and high-selectivity/-sensitivity for Cu 2+ is synthesized through a simple one-step route and then loaded onto commercially used cellulose fiber filter paper to engineer a biomass-based fluorescent material (CMIA-FP). The CMIA-FP offers user-friendly, high-precision, fast-responsive, and real-time visual monitoring of Cu 2+ . Moreover, CMIA forms a chemically stable complex with Cu 2+ , loaded onto filter paper to prepare another biomass-based fluorescent platform (CMIA-CU-FP) for visual real-time monitoring of H 2 S. Marine algal toxin contamination is a major threat to human health. Thus, it is crucial to develop rapid and on-site techniques for detecting algal toxins. In this work, we developed colorimetric cloth and paper hybrid microfluidic devices (μCPADs) for rapid detection of gonyautoxin (GTX1/4) combined with molecularly imprinted polymers. In addition, the metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) composites were applied for this approach by their unique features. Guanosine serves as a dummy template for surface imprinting and has certain structural advantages in recognizing gonyautoxin. MOF@MIPs composites were able to perform a catalytic color reaction using hydrogen peroxide-tetramethylbenzidine for the detection of GTX1/4. The cloth-based sensing substrates were assembled on origami μPADs to form user-friendly, miniaturized colorimetric μCPADs. Combined with a smartphone, the proposed colorimetric μCPADs successfully achieved a low limit of detection of 0.65 μg/L within the range of 1-200 μg/L for rapid visual detection of GTX1/4. Moreover, the GTX1/4 of real shellfish and seawater samples were satisfactorily detected to indicate the application prospect of the μCPADs. Developing highly efficient adsorbents for the removal of trace thallium(I) (Tl + ) is crucial for addressing environmental challenges. In this study, we successfully synthesized cubic Prussian blue (PB) loading on filter papers using an intermediate layer (dopamine/polyethyleneimine) via in-situ methods. The as-prepared PB-modified FP demonstrated outstanding anti-interference properties and light-enhanced adsorption performance for Tl + (0.5 mg/L) under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, exhibiting twice the effectiveness compared to dark conditions, even in acidic and coexisting ionic environments. This indicated its suitability for treating complex Tl + -contaminated water. Notably, the removal efficiency for trace Tl + was almost 100%, with a maximum experimental adsorption capacity of 86.2 mg/g after 1-h photo-promoted adsorption under 365 nm UV. Characterization results supported a proposed photo-driven redox mechanism that elucidated the interaction between Tl + and PB-modified FP. Specifically, the accelerated Fe(III) to Fe(II) redox reaction facilitated Tl + accommodation on the surface and/or lattice of PB, enhancing Tl + adsorption by compensating for missed positive charges. The excessive use of tetracycline poses a threat to human health, making it essential to monitor and regulate its usage. While whole-cell biosensors offer a simple and cost-effective method, their utility is constrained by limitations in sensitivity, portability, and robustness, hindering real-time measurements within complex environmental contexts. In this study, a ratiometric i/cTetR synthetic biosensing test strip with an engineered modified dual-fluorescence reporting was developed for detecting Tet antibiotics in water and food. First, the standardized unidirectional promoter PtetR by tailoring and screening TetR transcription factor binding sites and verified by molecular docking, shortening the detection time. Secondly, decoupling the sensing and reporting modules enhances the biosensor's performance, eliminating genetic background leakage and tripling the output signal. Thirdly, a ratiometric dual fluorescence signal i/cTetR biosensing test strip was designed. Under the light box LED/UV light source, the dual signal output method significantly reduced false negative results and enhanced the anti-interference capability of the biosensor. The i/cTetR strips can detect Tet in tap water (5-1280 μg/mL) and milk (50-3200 μg/kg) within 45 min in high volume on-site without separation and purification. Nanoplastics (NPs, <1 µm) pose greater risks due to their increased absorption rates in biological systems. In this study, we investigated the release of NPs from paper cups and microwavable food containers coated with low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and polylactic acid (PLA). For disposable paper cups, we found that LDPE-coated cups released up to 26-fold more NPs (maximum 1.9 × 10 7 per cup) than PLA-coated ones. The NPs release from LDPE-coated cups was increased at high temperatures above 80 °C, and further increased by physical agitation. However, negligible NP release was observed when the inner coating thickness exceeded 1 mm. For microwavable food containers, those with PLA coatings were more susceptible to the effects of microwave. Depending on the cooking time, we noticed a significant difference (up to 40000 times) in the number of released NPs between LDPE and PLA coatings. Additionally, higher microwave power level led to an increase of NPs, even with constant total energy input. Considering the release of NP, PLA coatings for disposable paper cups and LDPE coatings for microwavable food containers seem more suitable. Paper-based surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) optical nanoprobes provide ultrasensitive analyte detection; however, they lack selectivity, making them difficult to use in real-world sample analysis without a pretreatment process. This work describes the design of a microfluidic paper-based SERS substrate based on molecularly imprinted nanogels decorated with silver nanoparticles to simultaneously detect bisphenol A (BPA) and bisphenol S (BPS) traces in plastic toys and receipts. The synthesized nanogels have two characteristics that boost SERS performance: molecularly imprinted cavities that allow for selective adsorption and a wrinkled surface that creates uniformly distributed hot spots. Simple paper-based sensor devices were built as 'drop and read' SERS substrates with a separate reservoir to detect a single target, while advanced SERS platforms were designed as a microfluidic chip with two reservoirs connected by a channel for simultaneous detection of BPA and BPS. The SERS platform with a single reservoir showed outstanding analytical performance for the detection of BPA and BPS, with low detection limits of 0.38 pM and 0.37 pM, respectively. The microfluidic paper-based sensor allowed simultaneous and selective detection of BPA and BPS with detection limits estimated at 0.68 nM and 0.47 nM, respectively. The developed sensors are successfully applied to detect BPA and BPS in plastic products and receipts.
