In order to gain a profound understanding of the fate of pollutants in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), this study analyzed the electron contribution of pollutants qualitatively and quantitatively which rarely reported before. The rich electron transfer system was constructed by mesoporous carbon nitride (MCN) coupling with persulfate (PS) driven by visible light and the sulfanilamide antibiotics (SULs) were used as target contaminants. Firstly, the qualitative analysis of electron transfer in the system was confirmed systematically. The electron flow direction tested by i-t curves indicated that PS absorbed electrons, while SULs released electrons. The flow rate of electrons was also accelerated after the addition of SULs. The fitting curve between the kinetics and the peak potential difference tested by CV curve showed that the larger potential difference, the slower rate of oxidative degradation. Secondly, the quantification of electron transfer was achieved through theoretical calculations to simulate the interactions of the 'catalyst-oxidant-antibiotic' system. After the addition of SULs, the adsorption energy of the 'catalyst-oxidant-antibiotic' system was enhanced and the bond length of the peroxide bond was stretched. Notably, the electron transfer analysis results showed that the charge of SULs was around 0.032-0.056e, indicating that SULs pollutants played the role of electron contributors in the system. The oxidative degradation pathway included the direct cracking of S-N bond, shedding of marginal groups, ring-opening and hydroxyl addition reaction. Graphitic carbon nitride has gained considerable attention as a visible-light photocatalyst. However, its photocatalytic efficiency is restricted by its limited capacity for absorbing visible light and swift recombination of charge carriers. To overcome this bottleneck, we fabricated an atomic Fe-dispersed ultrathin carbon nitride (Fe-UTCN) photocatalyst via one-step thermal polymerization. Fe-UTCN showed high efficiency in the photodegradation of acetaminophen (APAP), achieving > 90 % elimination within 60-min visible light irradiation. The anchoring of Fe atoms improved the photocatalytic activity of UTCN by narrowing the bandgap from 2.50 eV to 2.33 eV and suppressing radiative recombination. Calculations by density functional theory revealed that the Fe-N 4 sites (adsorption energy of - 3.10 eV) were preferred over the UTCN sites (adsorption energy of - 0.18 eV) for the adsorption of oxygen and the subsequent formation of O 2 •- , the dominant reactive species in the degradation of APAP. Notably, the Fe-UTCN catalyst exhibited good stability after five successive runs and was applicable to complex water matrices. Nowadays, effluent treatment is a severe challenge mainly because of its complex composition, which includes oil, heavy metal ions, and dyes. Developing new intelligent membranes is one of the strategies to tackle these significant challenges in wastewater treatment. In this study, we fabricated asymmetric polyethylene glycol terephthalate (PET) membranes by grafting cross-linked poly (itaconic anhydride) (CL-PITA) nanoparticles onto the irradiated face. These nanoparticles were then functionalized with polyethyleneimine (PEI) and protonated with HCl to introduce numerous active electropositive amine groups. The fundamental purpose was to increase surface roughness, introduce numerous hydrophilic groups, and modify it to create a multi-functional PET membrane to separate complex environments. The promising results demonstrated that the protonated PET-g-ITA/DVB (10) -cat membrane exhibited excellent separation efficiencies (SE) for water/light oil, water/heavy oil and oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion. Compared to PET-g-ITA/DVB (0) -cat, it showed superior performance in SE for O/W emulsion and flux decay for water/light oil after 10 cycles. Coastal wetland soils play a critical role in the global mercury (Hg) cycle, serving as both an important repository for total mercury (THg) and a hotspot for methylmercury (MeHg) production. This study investigated Hg pollution in soils dominated by Phragmites australis (PA) and Spartina alterniflora (SA) across five representative China's coastal wetlands (Yellow River (YR), Linhong River (LHR), Yangtze River (CJR), Min River (MR), and Nanliu River (NLR)). The THg concentrations ranged from 16.7 to 446.0 (96.3 ± 59.3 ng g -1 , dw), while MeHg concentrations varied from 0.01 to 0.81 (0.12 ± 0.12 ng g -1 , dw). We further evaluated Hg risk in these wetlands using potential ecological risk index (E r ) and geographical enrichment factor (I geo ). Most wetlands exhibited low to moderate ecological risk, except the PA habitat in the YR wetland, showing moderate to high risk. Soil organic matter significantly influenced THg and MeHg distribution, while MeHg% correlated well with soil salinity and pH. These findings highlight the importance of organic-rich coastal wetland soils in THg and MeHg accumulation, with the soil properties influencing net MeHg production. Furthermore, SA habitat generally exhibited higher MeHg%, suggesting its invasion elevates the ecological risk of MeHg in coastal wetlands. Long-term exposure leads to biomagnification of Hg. The environmental pollution caused by mineral exploitation and energy consumption poses a serious threat to ecological security and human health, particularly in resource-based cities. To address this issue, a comprehensive investigation was conducted on potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in road dust from different seasons to assess the environmental risks and influencing factors faced by Datong City. Multivariate statistical analysis and absolute principal component score were employed for source identification and quantitative allocation. The geo-accumulation index and improved Nemerow index were utilized to evaluate the pollution levels of PTEs. Monte Carlo simulation was employed to assess the ecological-health risks associated with PTEs content and source orientation. Furthermore, geo-detector and random forest analysis were conducted to examine the key environmental variables and driving factors contributing to the spatiotemporal variation in PTEs content. In all PTEs, Cd, Hg, and Zn exhibited higher levels of content, with an average content/background value of 3.65 to 4.91, 2.53 to 3.34, and 2.15 to 2.89 times, respectively. Seasonal disparities were evident in PTEs contents, with average levels generally showing a pattern of spring (winter) > summer (autumn). PTEs in fine road dust (FRD) were primarily influenced by traffic, natural factors, coal-related industrial activities, and metallurgical activities, contributing 14.9-33.9 %, 41.4-47.5 %, 4.4-8.3 %, and 14.2-29.4 % to the total contents, respectively. The overall pollution and ecological risk of PTEs were categorized as moderate and high, respectively, with the winter season exhibiting the most severe conditions, primarily driven by Hg emissions from coal-related industries. Non-carcinogenic risk of PTEs for adults was within the safe limit, yet children still faced a probability of 4.1 %-16.4 % of unacceptable risks, particularly in summer. Carcinogenic risks were evident across all demographics, with children at the highest risk, mainly due to Cr and smelting industrial sources. Exogenous abscisic acid (ABA) presents a novel approach to mitigate heavy metal (HM) accumulation in plants, yet its efficacy against multiple HMs and potential enhancement methods remain underexplored. In this study, we demonstrated that the exogenous ABA application simultaneously decreased Zn, Cd and Ni accumulation by 22-25 %, 27-39 % and 60-62 %, respectively, in wild-type (WT) Arabidopsis. Conversely, ABA reduced Pb in shoots but increased its root concentration. ABA application also modulated the expression of HM uptake genes, inhibiting IRT1, NRAMP1, NRAMP4, and HMA3, and increasing ZIP1 and ZIP4 expressions. Further analysis revealed that overexpressing the ABA-importing transporter (AIT1) in plants intensified the reduction of Cd, Zn, and Ni, compared to WT. However, the inhibitory effect of exogenous ABA on Pb accumulation was mitigated in shoots with higher AIT1 expression. Furthermore, HMs-induced growth inhibition and the damage to photosynthesis were also alleviated with ABA treatment. Mercury (Hg) emitted from East Asian has increased the risk of Hg in China Marginal Seas for decades. However, the speciation of Hg (especially the bioavailable Hg) in these regions remains unclear. To address this problem, we analyzed total Hg (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) in the sediment and porewater of Yellow sea (YS) and East China Sea (ECS) and determined the speciation of Hg using both improved BCR sequential extraction and isotope dilution (ID) techniques. Nearshore areas of YS and ECS exhibited higher THg levels in sediments and porewater, suggesting the significant contribution of terrestrial inputs. The spatial distribution of MeHg showed similar trends with THg, but the sites with higher MeHg concentrations did not align with those of THg. The improved BCR sequential extraction method showed the residual fraction dominated Hg content (∼44 %) in both systems, with a minor bioavailable carbonate fraction (1 %). The Spearman correlation analysis indicates that E h and pH are the two factors significantly affected Hg bioavailability in the sediment. The bioavailability of Hg (estimated by the BCR method) showed a significant positive correlation with MeHg levels in the sediment (R²=0.47, P < 0.05), suggesting that BCR can be used to estimate the potential of Hg methylation in the sediment. The presence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in soils has received extensive attention regarding its impacts on environmental, animal, and human systems under One Health. However, the health risks of soil ARGs and microbial determinants of soil resistomes remain poorly understood. Here, a nationwide metagenomic investigation of ARGs in cropland and forest soils in China was conducted. The findings indicated that the abundance and richness of high-risk (i.e., mobilizable, pathogen-carriable and clinically relevant) ARGs in cropland soils were 25.7 times and 8.4 times higher, respectively, compared to those identified in forest soils, suggesting the contribution of agricultural practices to the elevated risk level of soil resistomes. The biosynthetic potential of antibacterials best explained the total ARG abundance (Mantel's r = 0.52, p < 0.001) when compared with environmental variables and anthropogenic disturbance. Both microbial producers' self-resistance and antagonistic interactions contributed to the ARG abundance, of which self-resistance ARGs account for 14.1 %- 35.1 % in abundance. With the increased biosynthetic potential of antibacterials, the antagonistic interactions within the microbial community were greatly enhanced, leading to a significant increase in ARG abundance. Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a toxic secondary metabolite that widely contaminates agro-products and poses a significant dietary risk to human health. Previously, a carboxypeptidase CP4 was characterized for OTA degradation in Lysobacter sp. CW239, but the degradation activity was much lower than its host strain CW239. In this study, an amidohydrolase ADH2 was screened for OTA hydrolysis in this strain. The result showed that 50 μg/L OTA was completely degraded by 1.0 μg/mL rADH2 within 5 min, indicating ultra-efficient activity. Meanwhile, the two hydrolases (i.e., CP4 and ADH2) in the strain CW239 showed the same degradation manner, which transformed the OTA to ochratoxin α (OTα) and l-β-phenylalanine. Gene mutants (Δcp4, Δadh2 and Δcp4-adh2) testing result showed that OTA was co-degraded by carboxypeptidase CP4 and amidohydrolase ADH2, and the two hydrolases are sole agents in strain CW239 for OTA degradation. Hereinto, the ADH2 was the overwhelming efficient hydrolase, and the two types of hydrolases co-degraded OTA in CW239 by synergistic effect. Prenatal exposure to benzotriazoles and benzothiazoles (collectively as BTs) was associated with pregnancy complications. Identifying the metabolites associated with prenatal BTs exposure may help elucidate the mechanism and characterize the exposure risk. In this prospective study of 158 pregnant women from Wuhan, China, urinary BTs were repeatedly measured across three trimesters to provide an accurate estimation of exposure during pregnancy. We conducted high-throughput targeted metabolomics with great coverage and high accuracy to characterize the urinary metabolic profile in late pregnancy. We first identified the perturbed metabolites of cocktail BTs exposure and then pinned down to the pairwise associations between individual BTs and the identified metabolites. A total of 44 metabolites were identified as perturbed biomarkers of cocktail BTs exposure based on the variable influence on projection (VIP > 1.2) score. Further pairwise associations analysis showed positive association of BTs with oxidative stress related biomarkers and negative association of BTs with neuronal function metabolites. The shared metabolic signatures among BTs in the co-occurrence network of pairwise association analysis may partially be attributed to the correlation among cocktail BTs exposure. The findings provide the potential mechanisms of BTs-associated pregnancy complications and offer insight into the health implications for prenatal BTs exposure.
