Mots-cles : Cereales, Mil, Mais, Sorgho, Valeur nutritive, Rendement, Bilan fourrager, Bovin On cotton farms in western Burkina Faso, draught cattle, which play a vital role (energy, manure, and others) in the sustainability of the farming system, are more affected by the fodder deficit in the dry season. Crop residues from cereals grown mainly in rotation with cotton can play an important role in coping with this situation. This study analysed the availability of cereal stalks for optimal use in animal feed. The study was conducted in nine villages in the Mouhoun and Tuy provinces of Burkina Faso's western cotton-growing zone and involved 72 cotton farmers, livestock breeders, and agro-pastoralists. Data collection consisted of household surveys and biomass measurements of the main maize, millet, and sorghum plots, using 522 plots of 25m2. The nutritional value of the crop residues was estimated using near-infrared spectrometry. The results showed that the average area sown for maize, millet, and sorghum were 3.8 [+ or -] 3.7, 2.9 [+ or -] 2.3 and 1.7 [+ or -] 1.4 hectares, respectively. Biomass yields were 3.2 [+ or -] 1.4, 2.5 [+ or -] 0.9 and 4.9 [+ or -] 2.6 tons of dry matter per hectare, respectively, with respective animal carrying capacities of 2.0 [+ or -] 0.9, 2.0 [+ or -] 0.9 and 3.0 [+ or -] 1.6 tropical cattle units (TCU) per hectare. The seasonal fodder balances recorded for farmers' stockbreeders and agro-pastoralists were 0.68, 22.59, and -2.24 TCU, respectively. The average metabolisable energy content (7.55 MJ/kg of dry matter) and in vitro digestibility (46.89 [+ or -] 2.57%) of sorghum residues were respectively higher than those of millet (6.56 [+ or -] 0.35 MJ/kgDM et 41.83 [+ or -]0,88%) and maize (7.10 [+ or -] 0.58 MJ/kgDM et 44.40 [+ or -] 0.86%). The total nitrogen content of the cereal stalks was low. They were between 3.16 [+ or -] 0.27% and 4.64 [+ or -] 0.81% for sorghum and maize harvest residues, respectively, which highlights the need for protein supplementation in the use of these harvest residues on cotton farms. If producers focused more on sorghum, this could improve the supply of fodder and strengthen the integration of agriculture and livestock farming, and hence the sustainability of the production system. Industrial construction is a complex production system involving multiple supply chains. Engineers need a tool that enables them to plan and improve the system by testing different theories. This research developed a special modeling system tailored for building large-scale simulation models for industrial construction. The modeling system can be used to model an industrial construction project as a whole supply chain system, covering spool drafting, material supply, spool fabrication, module assembly, and site installation, complete with details of the production level. The entire production system can be conceived in terms of not only activities, but also product flows and information flows by the developed modeling system. The developed model was utilized to execute several simulation experimentations to test the various theories. This testing ultimately facilitates the improvement of the performance of the whole industrial construction project system. Temporary fabrication plants such as rebar assembly and precast segment shops are increasingly used in large scale construction projects to provide a construction site of its material needs. A plant needs to be operated in such a way that it is flexible enough to adapt to changing project demands while minimizing inventories. Meeting such needs requires careful control of the level of raw materials and assembly products fabricated in the plant, the two main types of inventories. However, in practice the ordering of raw materials and assembly times are ad hoc, leading to excess inventories and added costs to the project. This paper presents a methodology for effective, efficient, and economic control of inventory levels in temporary rebar assembly plants. Ordering processes are formalized to convert existing approaches into a pull production system. Given this transformation, a methodology is presented that employs Monte Carlo simulation and optimization techniques to identify inventory levels that minimize inventory costs while simulating variability in demand, procurement lead times, and production capacity. A retrospective case on a rebar assembly plant shows that the same amount of work can be performed with significantly less inventory levels when applying the proposed production methodology. It also provides evidence that the cost savings from inventory costs outweigh any additional holding or delivery costs associated with a pull production system. Key words: construction supply chain, inventory control, pull production, temporary fabrication plant. Liquid metal Galinstan (GaInSn) is corrosive in nature against other solid metals as its base component is gallium. This study experimentally investigated the compatibility of GaInSn with eight common metals at temperatures up to 200 [degrees]C for 2000 h, including aluminum, copper, brass, ferritic and austenitic stainless steels (E-brite, SS304L, SS316L), and nickel-chromium alloys (Inconel and Hastelloy). This assessment aims to assist in design and material selection of a liquid metal magnetohy-drodynamics system that houses Galinstan for power generation by low temperature natural heat sources or industrial waste heat. Design and fabrication of this renewable power system required assurance of material compatibility with common construction and instrumentation materials. The most severe corrosion effects of GaInSn on the metal alloys were observed on aluminum, copper, and brass, which confirms the results of previously conducted studies. No obvious corrosion on stainless steel or nickel-chromium alloys were observed by this study, which reveals that stainless steel has a good resistance to attack by GaInSn up to 200 [degrees]C. Six non-metals were also evaluated, including acronitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), acrylic, nitrile rubber (Buna N), nylon, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and Teflon, which were deemed to be compatible with GaInSn up to the temperatures tested. Key words: Galinstan corrosion, gallium corrosion, liquid metal embrittlement, liquid metal corrosion, magnetohydrodynamics. Water scarcity and increasing labor costs of rice cultivation have prompted many agro-ecosystems in the world to adopt the direct-seeded rice (DSR) method instead of the hand-transplanting method. However, there is a downside to this approach, which is the prevalence and spread of weedy rice (WR), a troublesome weed in paddy fields that has the potential to cause a 90% loss of total yield in high-infested areas. The progression, infestation, and dynamics of WR are linked to environmental circumstances, types of rice cultivar, established techniques, and field management. WR is viewed as a critical problem, as it may prove counterproductive in rice cultivation because it causes an overall increase in the production cost of paddy harvesting. For the purpose of our discussion, a method is explored that can be used to eliminate, or at least mitigate, the spread of WR, which is the Clearfield[R] Production System (CPS). This method consists of imidazolinone (IMI) herbicide, Clearfield[R] certified seeds, and the Stewardship Guide. However, use of the CPS has been known to negatively affect the environment, as it transfers resistance traits to WR, increasing IMI persistence in the cultivated soils, and contaminating soils and water with herbicide residues. These negative environmental effects could be dealt with by using integrated weed management systems (IWMS) that include the use of all viable tools and should be incorporated with the proper Stewardship Guide to reduce the growth of herbicide-resistant WR. This review aims to elucidate information pertaining to WR infestation, the characteristics thereof, sustainable techniques for WR control, IMI herbicides, and diverse methods for the extraction and determination of IMI residues inthe environment. Understanding the conspecific nature of WR serves as abaseline for constructing novel WR control strategies in the future. Key words: imidazolinone, Clearfield[R] rice, carry over, resistance, integrated weed management systems, weedy rice. The growing of finfish, crustaceans, molluscs, and aquatic plants is termed aquaculture and it is currently the fastest growing animal food producing sector in the world. Flow-through aquaculture facilities are the most commonly used production system for the culture of salmonids. Flow-through land-based aquaculture facilities place great demands on water resources because they require large volumes of high quality source water to grow fish and they also discharge their wastewaters into the aquatic environment. The main source of waste in aquaculture wastewaters is the addition of formulated feed to the culture structure. Discharge of untreated aquaculture wastewaters can lead to physicochemical and biological degradation of receiving waters. Despite advances in feed quality and feeding practices, the treatment of wastewaters from flow- through land-based aquaculture facilities is a necessary practice. Conventional wastewater treatment from flow-through land- based aquaculture facilities has focused on gravitational sedimentation and mechanical screening of the wastewater, which successfully addresses the particulate fraction of the waste. In the past decade, the use of subsurface flow constructed wetlands (SSFCWs), which treat both the particulate and the dissolved fraction of the waste have been gaining attention for the treatment of wastewater from flow-through land-based salmonid farms. Existing studies have demonstrated that SSFCWs have the potential to successfully remove solids, oxygen demanding materials and nutrients from flow-through land-based salmonid wastewaters. Key words: aquaculture, constructed wetland, nitrogen, oxygen demand, phosphorus, solids. The discussion of growth ability is based on a categorization of European peripheries and the concept of local production systems. Taking the fishing community of Muros in Galicia, northwest Spain, as its focus, the article discusses the ability of a community of its type to undertake the industrial restructuring of its fishing industry, mussel farming activities, tourism, and electricity generation by wind turbines. It also reveals how, during the processes of renewal, Muros has become more deeply dependent on its fishery due to an inability amongst the actors of the production system to leave the evolutionary paths laid down by earlier investment in the fishing industries. SCOTT A. J. (2002) A new map of Hollywood: the production and distribution of American motion pictures, Reg. Studies 36, 957-975. In this paper, I offer a reinterpretation of the economic geography of the so-called new Hollywood. The argument proceeds in six main stages. First, I briefly examine the debate on industrial organization in Hollywood that has gone on in the literature since the mid-1980s, and I conclude that the debate has become unnecessarily polarized. Second, I attempt to show how an approach that invokes both flexible specialization and systems-house forms of production is necessary to any reasonably complete analysis of the organization of production in the new Hollywood. Third, and on this basis, I argue that the Hollywood production system is deeply bifurcated into two segments comprising: (1) the majors and their cohorts of allied firms on the one hand; and (2) the mass of independent production companies on the other. Fourth, 1 reaffirm the continuing tremendous agglomerative attraction o f Hollywood as a locale for motion-picture production, but I also describe in analytical and empirical terms how selected kinds of activities seek out satellite production locations in other parts of the world. Fifth, I show how the majors continue to extend their global reach by means of their ever more aggressive marketing and distribution divisions, and I discuss how this state of affairs depends on and amplifies the competitive advantages of Hollywood. Sixth and finally, I reflect upon some of the challenges that Hollywood must face up to as new cultural-products agglomerations arise all over the globe, offering potential challenges to its hegemony. Introduction: I sought to determine whether emergency department (ED) volume is associated with differing ED wait times. Methods: I conducted a retrospective analysis of the Emergency Department Reporting System database of the Ontario Ministry of Health. I abstracted ED length of stay for patient visits to 117 hospital EDs during the second quarter of 2008, representing 89% of ED visits in the province during that period. Annual volume of ED visits, lengths of stay in the ED and acuity levels of patients were measured. Results: All EDs were more efficient in managing the treatment of low-acuity patients compared with high-acuity patients. Small rural EDs in Ontario had the shortest wait times for both high- and low-acuity patients (medians 2.35 h for high-acuity and 1.46 h for low-acuity patients in small rural EDs v. 4.98 h for high-acuity and 2.85 h for low-acuity patients in teaching hospitals). Conclusion: Among the hospitals studied, rural EDs had the shortest wait times for both low- and high-acuity patients. According to one study, (1) 38% of Canadian respondents visited an emergency department (ED) for care during a 2-year period (2002-2004), a third more than respondents from most other [...]

Birch-bark tar, used continuously in the territory of modern Europe from the Middle Palaeolithic to the Iron Age, is conspicuous by its absence in the archaeological record of the Roman period, suggesting its replacement by conifer-based products. The results of chemical analyses of residues on Roman hinges, however, now challenge this interpretation. The presence of birch-bark tar in most of the samples demonstrates the persistence of a long-established practice into the Roman period. Examined in relation to textual and environmental evidence, these results illuminate the transmission of technical knowledge and the development of long-distance trade networks associated with birch-bark tar. Keywords: Europe, Iron Age, Roman period, birch-bark tar, direct inlet-mass spectrometry, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, Introduction Plant exudates and tars were of considerable importance in antiquity. The earliest direct evidence of their use dates to the Middle Palaeolithic (Grunberg 2002). Through subsequent prehistoric periods, these [...]

Lumber industry -- Production data -- Supply and demand ,Inventory control ,Production management ,Mathematical models ,Sawmills ,Business ,Forest products industry - Abstract
Sawmilling activities in softwood mills (i.e., wood-sawing, drying, and finishing) cannot be efficiently planned at the operational level in a centralized manner because of the complexity of the production process. Sawmills plan their activities in a decentralized manner (although they try to coordinate them). Thus, specific mathematical models have been developed over the years to support planning for each activity. In the literature, these planning models are usually evaluated and tested independently, or connected using heuristics and evaluated for a fixed demand-planning horizon, assuming a known demand for the entire planning period. In this study, we simulate the use of planning models for decentralized sawmill production, but in a context where new orders arrive randomly and replanning is carried out periodically using a rolling horizon. We also simulated and evaluated different coordination mechanisms at the operational level, highlighting that previously published coordination mechanisms for decentralized planning of sawmilling operations may lead to a low order-fill rate when used in such a dynamic environment. We then propose a more advanced push-pull coordination mechanism based on the concept of decoupling point, revealing that this new mechanism may be more appropriate regarding the market characteristics considered in the study, while leading to a sales increase and reduced inventory. Actual numbers vary depending on specific market conditions., Lumber production for softwood mills involves three main production stages: sawing, drying, and finishing. Many products are generated from a single raw material, so the process is known as divergent [...]

Among several forms of herding in Niger, mobile herding remains the most important. Water access has undergone deep transformations in this field: increasing conflict with farmers, uses of wells as land tenure markers, multiplication of drilled wells with maintenance and management problems, commoditisation of water points. Various modes of governance are thus more and more intermingled in pastoralists' access to water infrastructures, including the state (often repressive, racketeer, absent, involved in patronage relations); municipalities (taking resources from herding without investing in it); development projects (perceived as an income to benefit from); and herder associations (fostered by senior officers). Since the 1990s, most Western countries have equipped themselves with frameworks and tools to measure health organizations and systems' performance. Paradoxically, several theoretical, methodological and usage issues remain unresolved. Conceptually, the notion of performance is vague and not well rooted in theory. From a methodological perspective, we are faced with numerous measures that don't always meet reliability, validity and usefulness criteria and don't help to grasp the complexity of the concept. Finally, the assessment results are not fully used to continuously improve performance. This article focuses on analyzing these issues by deconstructing the myths that slow down the development of better-suited frameworks to meet decision-makers' needs. It also proposes innovations based on the global and integrated assessment model of health systems. In this paper we examine the perceptions of ERASMUS agents' of Polish students' participation in the EP. We provide a Bourdieusian analyse of the cultural and social capital acquisition of students based on the qualitative data, collected through semi-structured, in-depth interviews with Erasmus agents, of a European research project. We argue that: Polish students' participation in the EP has a positive impact on their academic achievement, cultural, social and linguistic capital, but, at the same time, it has a negative impact on degree completion of students as they get highly paid jobs, which prevent them from fully developing their cultural capital; ERASMUS Tourism has its value and place in the EP, because it provides students with the opportunity to develop their cultural, social and linguistic capital; and a Bourdieusian analysis of the experiences of ERASMUS students provides a better understanding of the impact student participation in the EP on their development. Geography - Abstract
Economic segregation, of residential inequalities based on income, is a complex spatial process. It is associated with structures which arise at certain scales and which evolve in time. In this paper, we analyse the evolution of economic segregation in Montreal from 1980 to 2000. This analysis is based on household's income and on their distribution within the residential space from four scales: households, census tracts, municipalities and some radio-concentric zones. Results confirm that the spatial organisation of economic segregation is scale dependent. More precisely, local inequalities are growing more rapidly but this trend does not prevent the consolidation of metropolitan-sized clusters. Moreover, results confirm that Montreal's economic segregation follows North American trends like the growth of economic disparities (spatial or not) or the fact that the enrichment of central and ex-urban neighbourhoods is compensated by the impoverishment of inner-ring suburbs.

Countries of the OECD have established 'codes of conduct' for public servants. Do these codes have a determining effect on how ethics are applied? Our research project, funded by the Secretariat du Conseil du Tresor of the Government of Quebec, allowed us to explore what is called the Reseau des repondants en ethique, a network of ethics consultants. When we analysed field survey responses, we found a parallel between the ways the network respondents defined ethics (a primarily self-regulated conception) and how they perceived the roles they were expected to play. We also found that there is a disjunction between the respondents' perception of ethics and the trend of regulation-by-others. One of the causes of this change in mentality would appear to be that Quebec's ethics consultants have adopted an ethical reflection model that distinguishes between ethics and codes of conduct., Comme le rapport du groupe PUMA de l'OCDE en 2000 (1) le demontre fort bien, la majorite des dispositifs institutionnels que les gouvernements mettent en place afin de consolider leur [...]

Knowledge transfer -- Analysis ,Occupational health and safety -- Analysis ,Business, general ,Business ,Economics ,Human resources and labor relations - Abstract
The aim of this article is to look back at the scientific activities and reflection of the strategic knowledge-transfer group (RS-TC) in order to identify development orientations on this topic that are related to occupational health and safety (OHS). To produce this review, we did a literature review using two main sources: 1) symposium- and round table-type activities successively organized in 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2011 and the various presentations and publications that originated from them, and 2) the literature reviews carried out on the transfer of OHS knowledge. We will first present a brief portrait of the OHS transfer activities conducted by the Occupational Health and Safety Research Network's RS-TC. The text will then provide various avenues for reflection developed from the activities carried out since the creation of this group within the Network. For example, the obstacle of limiting the meaning of the term knowledge and being limited by it, the choice of a representative title for the question of transfer in the Network, the need for using an individual/organization duality, the importance and complexity of the role of the intermediaries, the many relay tools, the problem of implementation. Implicitly, the position of the Network's strategic knowledge-transfer group of the within the nebula of knowledge transfer is gradually being clarified. The text ends on a yet unexplored avenue of reflection by the knowledge-transfer researcher community within this group--the decision-makers to whom little effort has been devoted--and on the follow-up to be given to the work performed to date: developing an analytical framework suitable for documenting the knowledge and know-how developed in the Network.

The objective of this paper is to describe the livelihoods of the rural populations of the Lake Chad Basin area (Sub-Saharan Africa), and in particular to assess the role of inland fishing activity in these livelihoods. For this purpose, a combination of activity and wealth ranking exercises was carried out in 64 villages of the Basin, completed by a series of comparative analyses of the ethnic composition, accessibility to fishing grounds and fishing gear ownership across the different socioeconomic strata of the populations. The analysis shows that for the entire area, households, irrespective of their wealth levels, still rely to a very large extent on subsistence-based economy where the three major activities (fishing, farming, and herding) are closely integrated. With respect to fishing activity the survey demonstrates' the central role of this activity (in terms of income, labor, and food supply) for all wealth groups. But the analysis also reveals that there is no one-to-one relationship between the contribution of fishing activity and the wealth (or poverty) level of the households. In particular the analysis suggests that well-known adages such as 'the fishermen are the poorest of the poor' or 'the fishery is the activity of last resort' do not reflect the complexity of the real situation., Introduction In Sahelian and Sub-Saharan Africa, but more generally in developing countries, one of the key conclusions that emerge from rural development research is the need to recognize the heterogeneity [...]

The concept of trust is currently enjoying a revival of popularity in the scientific, academic and management fields. The present article attempts to discern the reasons for this renewed interest, particularly within management studies and the social sciences. A critical review of the literature is conducted so as to better understand the concept itself, as well as its impact and utility for organizational analysis. This enables us to propose a multidimensional reading of the notion of trust. Finally, we come to the conclusion that researchers must examine areas of trust and mistrust within organizations in order to better comprehend sources of co-operation and conflict.
