The van Genuchten-Mualem (VGM) model is used largely to represent the relative soil hydraulic conductivity and soil water retention functions [[K.sub.r]([THETA]) and [THETA](h)]. Alternative equations proposed by Groenevelt and Grant (GRT) present advantages regarding mathematical versatility. Considering the VGM model cannot be analytically converted into the GRT model, this study empirically related parameters n and a (VGM) to parameters p and k (GRT). We used 90 value combinations of n and a and minimised the sum of squared differences between VGM and GRT models. Linear equations were fitted and validated using soil samples from the UNSODA database. A singular equation of p as a function of n was fitted, while a two-step procedure was required to correlate k and a. All fits resulted in very high precision (r [greater than or equal to] 0.999) and accuracy (RMSD [less than or equal to] 0.025 [m.sup.3] [m.sup.-3]) for the water retention function and very high precision (r [greater than or equal to] 0.994) for the hydraulic conductivity function. The accuracy for the [K.sub.r]([THETA]) function was high (RMSD [less than or equal to] 0.50) for 34 of the 40 tested soils. The derived empirical equations can be used to convert the equation parameters for [THETA](h) regardless of soil type, and for [K.sub.r]([THETA]) with some restrictions upon parameter combinations. The installation of a traditional double-ring infiltrometer (DRI) into soil is difficult and time consuming. It results in reduced accuracy because of soil disturbance and water leakage along the gaps between the ring wall and the soil. In this study, a surface-positioned DRI (SPDRI) was suggested to improve measurement accuracy and convenience of the DRI. Laboratory experiments were conducted to evaluate performance of the method in terms of the influence of the lateral flow of water on the accuracy of infiltration rate, average vertical wetting front depth and saturated hydraulic conductivity. A cylindrical soil column was used to simulate the ideal ring infiltrometer (IRI) of the one-dimensional vertical infiltration process for comparison purposes. Experimental results indicated that the infiltration rates measured by the SPDRI and IRI were nearly identical, with maximum relative error (RE) of 18.75%. The vertical wetting front depth of the SPDRI was nearly identical to that of the IRI, with proportional coefficients of 0.97 and [R.sup.2] > 0.95. Comparison of the soil saturated hydraulic conductivity with those from IRI indicated that the REs were 7.05-10.63% for the SPDRI. Experimental results demonstrated that the SPDRI could improve the measurement accuracy and facilitate the soil water infiltration measurement process. Abstract

Soil management has a major effect on soil physical characteristics, and consequently on soil organic matter (SOM) content, which are important for the success of crop production. The aim of this study was to evaluate the soil physical attributes and the accumulation of SOM in no-tillage systems (NTS) with different periods of implantation in a conventional tillage area and to compare them with native forest (NF) in the Cerrado biome. The experiment was planned in a 3 X 4 factorial scheme, consisting of three soil treatments (NTS for 17 years (NTS 17), NTS for 5 years (NTS5) and NF) and four soil depths (0-0.1, 0.1-0.2, 0.2-0.3 and 0.3-0.4 m), with a completely randomised design and four replicates. At deep soil layers (0.2-0.4 m) the NTS 17 area had a greater soil density than the NTS5 and NF areas, and greater SOM compared with the NTS5 area. Soil macroporosity in the NTS5 area was below 10% at all soil depths evaluated. The NF area had the greatest total organic carbon content (1.39 dag [kg.sup.-1]), stock of carbon (16.63 Mg [ha.sup.-1]), amount of soil organic matter (28.66 Mg [ha.sup.-1]) and equivalent carbon credits (60.96 Mg [ha.sup.-1]). Carbon stocks were similar in the NTS areas in all soil depths evaluated. The results indicate that conventional tillage areas can be successfully recovered under the Cerrado edaphoclimatic conditions with the implantation of an NTS.
