This is a review of the book Harry Potter and the Other; Race, Justice and Difference in the Wizarding World edited by Sarah Park Dahlen and Ebony Elizabeth Thomas. of MacDonald's more unorthodox beliefs and how they actually fit into traditional interpretations of Christianity rather than being outlandish or sui generis, as is sometimes said about MacDonald's ideas. An emerging body of opinion cites the Daenerys subplot in George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire (1996-) as a white savior narrative. This article argues against this. Martin presents his emblematic medievalist Occident as equally barbaric as his Orient, disabling the Manichean colonialist allegory some scholars perceive in his work. Although Daenerys certainly thinks like a colonialist savior, such discourse makes most sense as Bakhtinian image of a language, exhibited by Martin in concert with depictions of the intractable problems her actions cause, to mount a polemic authorial critique of colonialist literature. Contests the suggestion that Sansa Stark, a character in George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire, is a weak and indecisive by analyzing her in relation to William Patrick Day's system of Gothic fantasy. While Sansa is indeed physically passive, she manages to retain her own identity in a challenging literary environment. This physical passivity allows her to assert herself intellectually, analyzing and indicting the misdeeds and abuses she suffers. This combination of passive and active attributes precisely instantiates the skill set of the detective, a species of literary being developed from the Gothic fantasies Day analyses, and makes Sansa a crucial, and surprisingly empowered, element of Martin's literary engine. Critic Lev Grossman has described George R. R. Martin as 'the American Tolkien.' Analysis of Martin's Song of Ice and Fire in light of Frye's theory of modes, however, suggests that Terry Pratchett is a better point of comparison. Much of the power of Tolkien's work stems from his incisive use of Frye's high mimetic mode, as borrowed from the medieval literature he studied professionally. Martin's work, by contrast, characteristically uses Frye's ironic mode to puncture the conceits of his characters, a theme especially apparent in his frequent references to dirt and bodily functions. Martin's use of irony closely echoes that of Terry Pratchett, who frequently uses the ironic mode to lampoon the conventions and excesses of myth, romance and high mimesis. It is tempting to position ER Eddison's first novel, The Worm Ouroboros, as a synthetic example of the Icelandic sagas he read and translated in his capacity as a dedicated amateur medievalist. Close examination casts serious doubt on this interpretation, however. The book contains many features--most of them obviously deliberate inclusions by Eddison--that are the precise opposites of the features Eddison claimed to admire as essential strengths of saga literature. Furthermore, biographical evidence exists to suggest that the characters and incidents of The Worm Ouroboros were present in Eddison's imagination before he most likely discovered medieval literature. The dense, ornate composition of E. R. Eddison's Zimiamvia cycle has long obscured its ideological content, leading to errors in the scholarly reception of these books. Written with close reference to the working papers for the first Zimiamvian novel, Mistress of Mistresses, this article seeks to correct those mistakes. Although verbose, Eddison's novels are shown to have been anything but gratuitous, being composed in strict accordance with an extensive, dearly held, deceptively humane reworking of moral philosophy. Rather than being the reactionary hedonist some commentators have painted him as, Eddison is revealed to have been a very disciplined writer given to connecting thought and feeling in ways for which he has not yet been properly appreciated., In assessing E. R. Eddison's novel The Worm Ouroboros (1922), L. Sprague de Camp states that there is good reason to class it as 'the greatest single novel of heroic [...]

Leftists seem to be on the rise in Latin America, but it is unclear to what extent this impacts policy. Thus, a crucial question hangs over this apparent 'shift' in regional preferences: does the left have any real options to offer? Or in Latin America in an age of globalization, 'what's left for the left?' The contending perspectives are compared, and then the evidence is evaluated using a series of econometric models. In sum, no discernible policy differences between the left and the rest were found. In the conclusion, the implications of this result for Latin American democracy are discussed. The high-shear rotary ultrafiltration (UF) system uses membrane rotation to provide the turbulence required to minimize concentration polarization and flux decline. The high-shear UF system was effective in concentrating oily wastes from about 5% to as high as 65%. The decoupling of turbulence promotion from feed pressurization/recirculation by rotating the membrane was the primary reason for the improvement in performance over that observed with conventional UF systems. Transitional and gel layer oil concentrations (20% and 50-59%, respectively) were higher than values reported in the literature. Permeate flux was dependent on the temperature and rotational speed. Flux increased by about 45% when the temperature was increased from 43 to 60 [degrees] C. A larger decrease in waste viscosity, over that predicted for water alone, and increased oil droplet diffusivity were hypothesized as reasons for the stronger than expected flux-temperature relationship. The flux-rotational speed ([Omega]) relationship was described by J = f[([Omega]).sup.0.90]; however, the gel layer exhibited stability with increasing [Omega]. The ceramic membrane was superior to the polymeric membrane in regards to permeate flux and quality as well as cleaning and durability.
