A candidate-gene association study of birth weight and foetal growth restriction (FGR) in two independent study samples is presented. The two independent samples of black women provide consistent evidence that single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs2297660 in LRP8 is associated with fetal growth.

Magnetization thermal switching dynamics under radio frequency (rf) excitations are analyzed based on optimal reversal path and logarithmic susceptibility concepts. Thermal magnetization switching is characterized under both rf magnetic field and spin torque excitations.

The transport properties of nanopillars with high-quality MgO tunnel barriers and with a range of MgO barrier thickness are studied and compared to the bias-voltage dependence of tunneling magnetoresistance, differential conductivity, and resistance in parallel and antiparallel states with theoretical models. The findings for the junction studies provide insight into the observed large populations of parts with both low- and high-voltage bias transport anomalies in the parallel state and a much weaker decrease observed in the tunneling magnetoresistance with bias voltage.

The combined effects of polarization direction and magnetic field direction on magnetization switching are analyzed. The modeling results are used for studying the measurements for spin torque switching of a magnetic tunneling junction with canted pinning layers from nanosecond region to second region.

Spin-transfer induced magnetization in MgO based magnetic tunnel junction is analyzed at a wide time range. The identically switching currents measured by both finite pulse width and current sweep rate schemes are presented.

Spinwave propagation in clad cylindrical magnonic waveguides is examined under linear approximation and the study is applied to homogeneous magnetic nanowires with no cladding. Spinwave characteristics and properties like dispersion relationship and group velocity is described analytically.

The Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation is used for describing the spinwaves in magnetic medium using the linearization approach. The studies have shown that the spinwave coupling and power transfer associated with it is totally dependent on the waveguide structure and properties and the spinwave modes.

The effectiveness of extracting media noise waveforms and read-back waveforms were studied by using micromagnetic simulated media waveforms and read-back wave forms. The results of the study reveal that there could be a fundamental problem in using a normal-mode expansion of read-back waveforms to infer the media-intrinsic transition parameter based on the transition noise model.

The track edge effects in tilted and conventional perpendicular recording are analyzed utilizing micromagnetic simulations and theoretical analysis. For conventional perpendicular recording, the effect of the write field angle is to lower the medium energy barrier, which increases both the magnetic write width and the guard-band width and for tilted perpendicular recording, the guard-band is decreased due to the increased energy barrier caused by the write field angle and a large switching field H(sub SW).

A method to analyze thermally agitated magnetization reversal in a single-domain ferromagnetic grain with a uniaxial anisotropy axis oriented at an arbitrary angle to a magnetic field is presented. Random forces and phenomenological damping consistent with thermodynamics are introduced into the dynamic equations of the normal modes.

A technique developed for the analysis of thermal fluctuations in magnetic systems where nonuniform reversal occurs is discussed. The study expands the analysis focusing on the effective thermal volumes and includes comparison with experiment.
