Abstract

Ring deposits occur when drops containing dispersed solids evaporate on a surface. The characteristic pattern of a deposit is ascribed to a form of capillary flow, whereby pinning of the contact line of a drying drop, ensures that evaporating liquid from the outer edge is replaced by liquid from the inside. The mechanism indicates a distinctive power-law growth of the ring mass with time.
