Abstract

Large-scale comparative studies of putative alternative promoters (PAPs) between human and mouse counterpart genes are described. The study of the PAPs suggests that there are two distinct classes of promoters in humans, with one class of promoters emerging frequently during evolution.

Abstract

Transcriptional start sites for 14,628 human RefSeq genes are clustered into 30,964 clusters that are separated from each other by more than 500 bp, likely to constitute mutually distinct promoters. At least 7674 (52%) human RefSeq genes are found to be subjected to regulation by putative alternative promoters.
