In humanoid robotics, a small field with an avid appetite for novel devices, we experience a great deal of 'churn' of this nature. In this paper, we explore how best to make our projects stable and long-lasting, without compromising our ability to constantly change our sensors, actuators, processors and networks. We also look at how to encourage the propagation and evolution of hardware designs, so that we can start to build up a 'gene-pool' of material to draw upon for new projects. We advance on two fronts, software and hardware. For some time, we have been developing and using the YARP robot software architecture [Giorgio Metta, Paul Fitzpatrick, Lorenzo Natale, YARP: Yet another robot platform, International Journal on Advanced Robotics Systems 3 (2006) 43-48], which helps organize communication between sensors, processors, and actuators so that loose coupling is encouraged, making gradual system evolution much easier. YARP includes a model of communication that is transport-neutral, so that data flow is decoupled from the details of the underlying networks and protocols in use. Importantly for the long term, YARP is designed to play well with other architectures. Device drivers written for YARP can be ripped out and used without any 'middleware'. On the network, basic interoperation is possible with a few lines of code in any language with a socket library, and maximally efficient interoperation can be achieved by following documented protocols. These features are not normally the first things that end-users look for when starting a project, but they are crucial for longevity. We emphasize the strategic utility of the Free Software social contract [B. This study compared the training effects of split-style Olympic lifts (SP-L) with those of squat-style olympic lifts (SQ-L). In the study, the participants (n = 33 collegiate female volleyball players) were sorted on a random basis into the SP-L group (age = 15.80 [+ or -] 1.03 years; height = 164.50 [+ or -] 3.96 cm; body weight = 60.88 [+ or -] 8.26 kg), SQ-L group (age = 15.22 [+ or -] 1.2 years; height = 167.78 [+ or -] 3.53 cm, body weight = 62.02 [+ or -] 7.20 kg), and control group (CG; age = 15.14 [+ or -] 0.38 years; height = 165.29 [+ or -] 5.25 cm; body weight = 61.32 [+ or -] 5.89 kg). The groups performed split and squat snatch and clean and jerk twice a week for 6 weeks. Analysis of variance and magnitude-based inferences determined whether there was a significant difference in the measured variables among groups. In the groups, compared with the pretraining values, a significant and positive improvement was noted in posttraining leg stiffness and time to 5-m and 20-m sprint. However, for the time to 5-m sprint, the gains in the SP-L group were better (large/d = 1.79). In addition, an increase to spike jump and change of direction in the SP-L group alone was significant for the main effect of time (p < 0.05). The results of this study indicate that SP-L are more effective for spike jump, change of direction, and time to 5-m sprint. Although the results of the study provide insights regarding the beneficial effects of training with SP-L rather than SQ-L, consolidation of the study results with the results of future studies is warranted., Effective development of maximum strength and power is necessary in many individual and team sports. Subtidal shell deposits of the edible bivalve Area none in the Strait of Messina (Central Mediterranean) were investigated and compared with an adjacent live population, testifying that dead and live populations were similar but distinct. The age--class structure of the two compared populations, whose lifespans ranged from 5 to 7 y, indicated that in this area unexploited Noah's ark stocks have generally low survival and recruitment. Shell morphometrics and size distributions suggested that the shell deposits were descriptive of the premortality population structure, as expected in a mass mortality episode.
