The reaction of dicyanamide with methanol produces chelate Cu(II) complexes through an activation mechanism involving bending of the beta-C site of the coordinated N(CN)(sub 2)-. This process prepares the N(CN)(sub 2) ion for nucleophilic attacks, and the chelate Cu(II) complexes serve as an electronic analogue of the beta-diketonates. These complexes exhibit a stronger ligand field. X-ray diffraction studies reveal their planar molecular structure. Analysis of their stability in solutions containing pyridine and ammonia shows their similarity to equatorial-axial interactions in metal complexes.

Metal dependent property of the intricate production of Cu(II), Ni(II) and Co(II) is determined by producing compounds with H2(H4)L1 and H2(H4)L2, both colorless tetrahydrosalen ligands, and by subjecting the two C double bonded to N bonds in the yellow salen ligands H2L1 and H2L2 to hydrogenation. The organic solution of the Cu(H4)L complex is constant toward O2 and H2O2 while the complex itself is a well determined crystalline solid. An aerated organic solution does not allow the constancy of Ni(H4)L despite its being a crystalline solid.

The magnetic field effect is considered on the solid-melt phase transformations. Using thermodynamic method it has been shown that an external magnetic field may observably influence the parameters of the equilibrium solid-melt phase transformations.
