Iodopsin, a chicken red-sensitive cone visual pigment, is subjected to nanosecond laser photolysis. Batho- and lumiiodopsins reveal the occurrence of a specific intermediate called BL-iodopsin. It has an absorption maximum which is a balance of the two iodopsins and an extinction coefficient which can be compared to the iodopsins. The presence of lumi-, meta I-, and meta II-like intermediates and intermediates like rhodopsin is observed. The occurrence of iodopsin in the equilibrium state between meta I and meta II intermediates does not rely on temperature, unlike rhodopsin.
