Abstract

Slow addition of 4 equiv of a THF solution of ((trimethylsilyl)ethynyl)lithium to a refluxing solution of C60 in toluene produces (trimethylsilyl)ethynylfullerenes. Addition of phenylethynyllithium to C60 under similar conditions produces phenylethynylfullerenes. Reaction conditions exhibit a strong influence on the yields of the products. NMR, MS and UV experiments help characterize the products, while cyclic voltammetric studies help determine the redox properties of the compounds.
