Abstract

An enzyme-linked immunospot assay called ELISPOT may be able to distinguish a current syphilis infection from a past infection. Researchers used ELISPOT to test blood samples from patients at a sexually transmitted diseases clinic for antibody-secreting cells (ASC) against the organism that causes syphilis. ASC were detected in 30 of 32 patients with a current syphilis infection. It did not detect ASCs in five patients who were treated for syphilis.
