This paper describes the IBM eServer[TM] BladeCenter[R] T system, an extension of the BladeCenter platform designed for the specific and rigorous requirements of the telecommunications industry, such as compliance with Telcordia Technologies Network Equipment--Building Standards (NEBS[TM]) specifications. The Telcordia NEBS documents and the analogous documents written for the European marketplace by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute define the range of environmental and electrical parameters presented by this market segment. A key characteristic of the telecommunications industry is its focus on the availability and redundancy of the equipment used to provide service to its customers. These requirements imposed significant design changes on the BladeCenter platform and software, while maintaining a solution compatible with the original BladeCenter architecture. This paper provides details of the design changes that were made in the areas of hardware, software, systems management, and integration, and concludes with examples and a discussion of customer solutions with the BladeCenter T system.

This paper describes the electrical architecture and design of the IBM eServer[TM] BladeCenter[R] processor blades, expansion blades, and input/output (I/O) expansion adapters and units. The processor blades are independent, general-purpose servers containing processors, chipsets, main memory, hard drives, network interface controllers, power input control circuitry, and local systems management. The blade architecture is robust and flexible enough to enable the design of general-purpose Intel-processor-based two-way and four-way blades, IBM POWER[TM]-processor-based blades, blades based on AMD Opteron[TM] processors, and common expansion blades. In addition, the processor blades, expansion adapters, and units use a serialized-deserialized (SerDes) interface for the internal I/O fabrics, thus giving blades the flexibility to support virtually any I/O protocol that supports SerDes. Support for I/O fabrics beyond the base Gigabit Ethernet is accomplished via optional I/O expansion adapters for Fibre Channel, Myricom Myrinet [R], InfiniBand[R], or additional Gigabit Ethernet. Additional storage or peripheral component interface capability can be added to the processor blades via expansion blades.

The magnet system for the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) Gamma, Electrons and Muons (GEM) detector consists of a single layer, superconducting, split solenoid and two iron forward field shapers (FFS). In addition, major structura components, such as the central detector and FFS support structures and the vacuum vessels, are to be built with magnetic steel. This paper presents the nonlinear, two and three-dimensional electromagnetic analyses which are performed in support of the overall design effort. A detailed axisymmetric, finite element ANSYS model is used to determine the magnetic field distribution in the region of the detector, and the electromagnetic forces acting on the coi and various magnetic steel elements. A 3-D model is developed to capture the magnetic field perturbations produced by asymmetric, magnetic structural elements. The model produces 3-D field maps of the detector volume to evaluate the effects of these asymmetries on the detector resolution. Another 3-D model is used to determine the distribution of magnetic steel plates required to shield the nearby Electronic Rack Room from the coil's fringe field.

The GEM Detector magnet at the Superconducting Super Collider is built in two halves each of which is comprised of 12 single layer superconducting coil modules wound on a 19 m mean diameter and joined with a low resistance lap joint employing the superconducting strands and a copper stabilizer. Each joint half is attached to the sheathed, cable-in-conduit conductor end, and assembly of the mating halves is completed in the field. The target resistance per joint is 5 X [10.sup.-10] [Omega] at an operating current of 50 kA. Details of the joint design, its cooling and results of tests on prototypical sub- and full-scale models using superconducting strands are presented.

File servers -- Research - Abstract
Dense servers trade performance at the node level for higher deployment density and lower power consumption as well as the possibility of reduced cost of ownership. System performance and the details of energy consumption for this class of servers, however, are not well understood. In this paper, we describe a research prototype designated as the Super Dense Server (SDS), which was optimized for high-density deployment. We describe its hardware features, show how they challenge the operating system and middleware, and describe how we have enhanced its software to handle these challenges. Our performance evaluation has shown that dense servers are a viable deployment alternative for the edge and application servers commonly found at conventional Web sites and large data centers. Using industry benchmarks, we have shown that SDS outperforms a comparable traditional server by almost a factor of 2 for CPU-bound electronic commerce workloads for the same space and roughly equivalent power budget. We have observed the same advantage in performance when SDS is compared to the alternative solution of virtualizing a high-end server to handle "scaled-down" workloads. We have also shown that SDS offers finer power management control than traditional servers, allowing higher energy efficiency per unit of computation. However, for high-intensity Web-serving workloads, SDS does not perform as well as a traditional server when many nodes must be configured into a cluster to provide a single system image. In that case, the limited memory of each SDS node reduces its performance scalability, and a traditional server is a better alternative. We have concluded that until technology advances allow denser packaging of memory or more efficient use of memory across nodes, the best performance and energy efficiency can be obtained by heterogeneous deployment of both traditional high-end and dense servers.

Ligaments and tendons serve a variety of important functions in maintaining the structure of the human body. Although abundant literature exists describing experimental investigations of these tissues, mathematical modeling of ligaments and tendons also contributes significantly to understanding their behavior. This paper presents a survey of developments in mathematical modeling of ligaments and tendons over the past 20 years. Mathematical descriptions of ligaments and tendons are identified as either elastic or viscoelastic, and are discussed in chronological order. Elastic models assume that ligaments and tendons do not display time dependent behavior and thus, they focus on describing the nonlinear aspects of their mechanical response. On the other hand, viscoelastic models incorporate time dependent effects into their mathematical description. In particular, two viscoelastic models are discussed in detail; quasi-linear viscoelasticity (QLV), which has been widely used in the past 20 years, and the recently proposed single integral finite strain (SIFS) model.

The settlement of Ban Non Wat charts the transition from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age in north-eastern Thailand. Examination of grave inclusions and mortuary treatment at this important site allows insights into social change during this key period. Increasing complexity and the inclusion of exotic items in the mortuary treatment of some individuals early in the Bronze Age is suggested to show the rise of a lineage of aggrandisers who controlled access to these symbolic articles. But, the author argues, their elevated status was ephemeral, forfeited as local bronze casting became established. Keywords: Ban Non Wat, Bronze Age, copper, exotic ornaments, aggrandisers, mortuary practices, social change, Introduction This article explores social changes that occurred when copper-base artefacts entered exchange circuits in Southeast Asia. Oxidation conditions that provide the high sorption activity of sorbents with respect to REE are found. Oxidized CNTs are characterized by acid-base titration and scanning electron microscopy, and the electrokinetic (ζ) potential of nanotube suspensions is determined as a function of pH. The elemental composition of CNTs is determined by ICP MS/AES methods. The sorption capacity of the oxidized CNTs with respect to a wide range of elements is determined. Their unique selectivity with respect to REE is revealed. A possibility of using oxidized CNTs for the efficient sorption preconcentration of REE with the aim to determine their ultralow concentrations in rocks is proved.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common life-shortening genetic disease in the White population, affecting 70,000 people worldwide (Cystic Fibrosis Worldwide, 2018). Although many health care professionals think of CF [...], Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a life-shortening genetic disease with many treatment requirements that necessitate the participation of a caregiver, especially if the patient is a child. We performed an integrated literature review of original research evaluating quality of life in caregivers of patients with CF. We searched the terms quality of life, cystic fibrosis, and caregivers in the MEDLINE, CINAHL, Child Development and Adolescent Studies, PsycARTICLES, and Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection databases from 2007 to 2017. Nine articles were included and showed that caregiver quality of life is affected by caring for a child with CF as evidenced by high rates of anxiety and depression. Anxiety and depression in caregivers affects adherence to the child's treatment regimen, causing detrimental effects on the health of the child. Screening for depression and anxiety and referral for treatment when necessary are needed to optimize family health. Findings include 1) CF has numerous treatment burdens for care-givers, 2) rates of anxiety and depression are two to three times higher in care-givers of patients with CF than in the general population, 3) depressed parents are less likely to adhere to their child's treatment regimen, and 4) few CF families report having received mental health screening or treatment. Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common life-shortening genetic disease in Whites, affecting 70,000 people worldwide (Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 2018). CF is caused by pathogenic mutations of the cystic fibrosis [...], Most studies on the quality of life of caregivers of children with cystic fibrosis (CF) have focused on the mental health of mothers, reflecting a biased underlying assumption that mothers are the primary caregivers. The aim of this study was to explore the experience of fathers caring for a child with CF. Twenty fathers of children with CF were studied via a semi-structured interview using Husserl's (1970) descriptive phenomenology. Fathers were enrolled from two accredited CF centers in Texas. Six themes emerged from the interviews: fathers reported feeling overwhelmed, feeling isolated, experiencing altered family dynamics, actively seeking resources, experiencing financial strain, and feeling hope. Fathers of children with CF reported distressing experiences in connection with their child's diagnosis of CF and during the course of their child's disease, but also reported a strong feeling of hope for the future. Practical implications for nurses include screening for anxiety and depression in fathers at the time of CF diagnosis, as well as potentially implementing a peer mentoring program for fathers. Key Words: Quality of life, mental health, financial strain, caregiver, resources, cystic fibrosis, fathers.

Introduction DNA barcodingisa method for identifying biological samples to species using the sequence of a standardized gene fragment (Hebert et al. 2003a; Hebert and Gregory 2005). DNA barcoding standards for [...], There is an ongoing campaign to DNA barcode the world's >20 000 bee species. Recent revisions of Lasioglossum (Dialictus) (Hymenoptera: Halictidae) for Canada and the eastern United States were completed using integrative taxonomy. DNA barcode data from 110 species of L. (Dialictus) are examined for their value in identification and discovering additional taxonomic diversity. Specimen identification success was estimated using the best close match method. Error rates were 20% relative to current taxonomic understanding. Barcode Index Numbers (BINs) assigned using Refined Single Linkage Analysis (RESL) and barcode gaps using the Automatic Barcode Gap Discovery (ABGD) method were also assessed. RESL was incongruent for 44.5% of species, although some cryptic diversity may exist. Forty-three of 110 species were part of merged BINs with multiple species. The barcode gap is non-existent for the data set as a whole and ABGD showed levels of discordance similar to the RESL. The viridatum species-group is particularly problematic, so that DNA barcodes alone would be misleading for species delimitation and specimen identification. Character-based methods using fixed nucleotide substitutions could improve specimen identification success in some cases. The use of DNA barcoding for species discovery for standard taxonomic practice in the absence of a well-defined barcode gap is discussed. Key words: Apoidea, Hymenoptera, identification, species delimitation, taxonomy. Devers[sup.3] Author Affiliations: (1) Mathematica Policy Research, 1100 1st Street NE, [...], Objectives The objective of this study was to describe factors that influence the ability of state Medicaid agencies to report the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services' (CMS) core set of children's health care quality measures (Child Core Set). Methods We conducted a multiple-case study of four high-performing states participating in the Children's Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act (CHIPRA) Quality Demonstration Grant Program: Illinois, Maine, Pennsylvania, and Oregon. Cases were purposively selected for their diverse measurement approaches and used data from 2010 to 2015, including 154 interviews, semiannual grant progress reports, and annual public reports on Child Core Set measures. We followed Yin's multiple-case study methodology to describe how and why each state increased the number of measures reported to CMS. Results All four states increased the number of Child Core Set measures reported to CMS during the grant period. Each took a different approach to reporting, depending on the available technical, organizational, and behavioral inputs in the state. Reporting capacity was influenced by a state's Medicaid data availability, ability to link to other state data systems, past experience with quality measurement, staff time and technical expertise, and demand for the measures. These factors were enhanced by CHIPRA Quality Demonstration grant funding and other federal capacity building activities, as hypothesized in our conceptual framework. These and other states have made progress reporting the Child Core Set since 2010. Conclusion With financial support and investment in state data systems and organizational factors, states can overcome challenges to reporting most of the Child Core Set measures.

Prostate cancer remains a leading cause of cancer death in males worldwide (1). The mainstay of therapy for patients with metastatic spread, including castration-resistant disease, is hormonal therapy that targets [...], An increasingly recognized resistance mechanism to androgen receptor (AR)-directed therapy in prostate cancer involves epithelial plasticity, in which tumor cells demonstrate low to absent AR expression and often have neuroendocrine features. The etiology and molecular basis for this 'alternative' treatment-resistant cell state remain incompletely understood. Here, by analyzing whole-exome sequencing data of metastatic biopsies from patients, we observed substantial genomic overlap between castration-resistant tumors that were histologically characterized as prostate adenocarcinomas (CRPC-Adeno) and neuroendocrine prostate cancer (CRPC-NE); analysis of biopsy samples from the same individuals over time points to a model most consistent with divergent clonal evolution. Genome-wide DNA methylation analysis revealed marked epigenetic differences between CRPC-NE tumors and CRPC-Adeno, and also designated samples of CRPC-Adeno with clinical features of AR independence as CRPC-NE, suggesting that epigenetic modifiers may play a role in the induction and/or maintenance of this treatment-resistant state. This study supports the emergence of an alternative, 'AR-indifferent' cell state through divergent clonal evolution as a mechanism of treatment resistance in advanced prostate cancer.

The development of male Ceratopteris richardii Brongn. gametophytes (induction) is well studied. Males develop in response to hermaphrodite-produced antheridiogen, which coincides with induced expression of ANI1 (antheridiogen- induced 1). Induction is blocked by exogenous abscisic acid (ABA). Conversion of male gametophytes to hermaphrodites occurs when males are removed from antheridiogen and is a less understood process. In this study, males were exposed to ABA at 0 µmol x [L.sup.-1], 1 µmol x [L.sup.-1], 10 µmol x [L.sup.-1], 100 µmol x [L.sup.-1], and 300 µmol x [L.sup.-1] and monitored for conversion. RT-qPCR methodology was developed to examine ANI1 expression levels in gametophytes outside of induction. Conversion of male gametophytes occurred more often and more quickly in media lacking ABA, and at lower ABA concentrations than at higher concentrations. ANI1 expression dropped significantly in males transferred to media lacking antheridiogen, but remained high in males remaining in the presence of antheridiogen and in those transferred to ABA. ANI1 expression was higher in 24 day old hermaphrodites relative to 24 day old males and at comparable expression levels to 6 day old gametophytes. These results suggest ABA serves a distinct role in conversion compared with induction, and ANI1 is expressed throughout the male's lifespan and in older hermaphrodites. Key words: abscisic acid, ANI1, antheridiogen, Ceratopteris richardii, gametophyte. Conventional gas chromatography (GC) analysis of hydrocarbons displaying one broad peak provides limited information. Two GC analytical protocols using two-peak and three-peak approaches were developed to investigate transformer oil components and their degradation in soil by hydrogen peroxide. The two-peak method revealed transformer oil to be composed of 27 wt.% F2 fraction and 73 wt.% F3 fraction hydrocarbons. The three-peak method segregated the transformer oil into 40 wt.% light, 40 wt.% medium, and 20 wt.% heavy hydrocarbon fractions. In contrast to reports of success with several classes of lighter hydrocarbons, only limited degradations of transformer oil in soils by 15% and 30% hydrogen peroxide treatment was indicated by conventional one-peak analysis; two-peak analysis showed varying F2 and F3 fraction degradations with F2 fraction degradation being higher; three-peak analysis offered a richer understanding of the relative degradations of light, medium, and heavy fractions. The effect of a low pH environment on the degradation of transformer oil by hydrogen peroxide was evaluated using the three-peak method. It emerged that the degradation of the medium and heavier fractions of transformer oil was higher at pH 2.0. Key words: transformer oil, soil remediation, hydrogen peroxide, gas chromatography.
